Today we are diving deep into audition material: the songs, monologues, and dance requirements that you’ll need to prepare to successfully audition for college musical theatre programs. Plus we’re talking about how you can go through this process successfully on yourself or when and how to reach out to a coaching service for help.

Your song choices say a lot about you. What if performing your audition material felt as good as slipping into your favorite outfit? It all starts with finding the right material for you. Today we're giving you 11 creative ways to look for new repertoire and what to keep in mind when choosing the perfect song.
16. Your Online Presence: Actor Websites, Social Media and More
00:34:50
If you're like many actors, chances are you get anxious when thinking about how to show up online. Do I need a website? What should be on it? What about social media? Will people think I'm bragging when I talk about career stuff? What are casting directors finding out about me online? We've got a simple game plan for you to follow in today's episode. We're talking all about how to create your ideal actor website and how to show up online.
When it comes to working on a rock/pop song, especially for auditions, there's some common questions we hear all the time. How do I act this song? Should I move and groove or just stand there and sing? And how much style should I sing with? And then it usually ends with comments like, I just don't know where to start, and I just feel so awkward! Don't worry, we've got you. Today is part one in a two-part series where we are giving you some tangible tools that you can use to help you act your pop rock song with confidence.
"I really feel like I had two choices in that moment. And the first choice is to, you know, just panic and run off stage. And the second option is to just roll with it and realize you've already shown up."
This is what Broadway, National Tour, and West End star Desi Oakley thought to herself just before the curtain went up on her West End debut, only hours after landing in London and finding out she'd be leading the cast of Waitress that evening. A self-proclaimed "Jane of all Trades," Desi is an actor, singer-songwriter, recording artist, composer, and coach. In today's interview she talks about creating a life as a working artist by reaching out in the business, how she shows up authentically online, and the experience that forever changed the way she speaks to herself.
There's a classic saying in our industry that if there's anything else you love to do as much or more than theater, do that. In my opinion, that advice is outdated. We've seen time and time again that some of the most successful performers are multi-passionate multi-hyphenates. They wear a lot of hats. Today we're talking about the benefits of having interests, hobbies, and even careers outside of, and in addition to theater.

"I actually know my songs are good. I believe that for myself, independently. I had to tell myself: you're allowed to start saying this to yourself. It's not arrogance, it's not even confidence, it's just knowing, it's peace."
After 20 years in the industry, this is what Gavin Creel finally starting saying to himself.
"I spent a lot more time getting my value and my worth from outside forces. But the pandemic took that away. There were no outside forces. There was no applause. There was no positive feedback loop."
For many of us, we know Gavin as a Tony Award (and Olivier Award) Winner, star of stage and screen. But in our podcast interview with him, Gavin says he "doesn't know who that is."

Today we're chatting with BVC intern and (nearly) college BFA grad Emily Baggarly, and she's sharing the five things she and her family did to make the college audition process easier!

Cynthia remembers Bre's University of Michigan audition as one of her favorites of all time. It stands out because it wasn't polished, it wasn't overly trained - she was just a raw vessel of talent. Among Bre's many credits, she's most recently performed as Catherine of Aragon in the Broadway production of SIX. Join us for a conversation about mental health, self-care, and managing the in-between-jobs periods as an actor with over a decade in the business.
"Very likely, people that you don't think are taking note, are! And it's good reason to keep putting one foot in front of the other." In episode 7, Chelsea shared her experience as a BFA student, her journey to Broadway, and what led her to help co-found BVC as we know it. Today we're diving deeper into Chelsea's Broadway career as a vocal coach, working on productions like The Phantom of the Opera, School of Rock, and Jesus Christ Superstar. 45. Everything's Coming Up Analisa Leaming! Living an Aligned Life as an Artist
00:44:54
"We think we know emotion because we are playing other characters, but most of the people I work with aren't actually that tuned into their own emotional body. Imagine how this will affect our art, the more we can come into our body and feel our own feelings and our own intuition and our own guidance and then bring that into our art."
Analisa Leaming is a performer turned "soulful coach" for actors, the host of the podcast A Balancing Act, and she's passionate about supporting artists mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as they pursue their dreams. Today's conversation is all about the roadblocks we encounter and breakthroughs we can make as we strive to live a life more aligned with our creativity and our dreams.

A lot of musical theater singers we know get overwhelmed and confused with rock pop music. So, as someone who's actually worked on a lot of pop rock musicals, I'm here to dispel some myths and hopefully make the style feel a little less intimidating and a lot more fun to try.

47. Everything's Coming Up Olli Haaskivi! Making the Transition to TV/Film
00:48:51
"My feeling about auditioning, regardless of the medium, has always been–this is my opportunity to actually play this part. I don't want to feel like I'm auditioning for something that might happen later. I want to feel like I'm fully doing it now. That lent itself nicely to auditioning for television and film, because the job might be tomorrow morning."
Olli Haaskivi is an actor who soon after graduating with a musical theatre degree, found his passion and skills aligned himself with a career in TV and film. Today, we talk with Olli about how he made that transition, what he feels are the tools you need to audition for TV/film successfully, and how he's developed a thriving coaching business helping other MT actors get started onscreen.
48. Mix Voice Misconceptions: 6 Things You Might be Doing Wrong!
00:26:52
Mix voice is a hot topic in the singing world, and chances are you're in search of that elusive experience of "finding your mix". In the world of musical theater, it's rare to find a singer who isn't exploring their mix, wondering whether they've found it, or simply wondering what mix voice is. With so much (sometimes conflicting) information out there on how to achieve a mix, Chelsea breaks down six common misconceptions about mixing and your singing voice in this solo episode.
Navigating online singing advice can be confusing for singers, because what works for one person might not work for you. Singing is personal! Chelsea is developing an online Mix Voice Course that focuses on personalized lesson plans based on self-assessments so that singers can find solutions that fit their specific needs. 00:53:40
“That aspiration? Hell yes. Allow yourself to want all of it. Wake up every morning, take a deep breath, meditate, and see where you are that day, and where that day takes you. Then allow yourself to pursue it. As opposed to failing because not every single piece is in place yet."
Erin Dilly is a wife, mother, Broadway actor (with a Tony nomination!), TV/film actor, fierce friend, and dedicated teacher—she seemingly does have it all! And yet, there is always more to the story than the shiny parts we see on social media. In this solo episode, Cynthia dives into a topic familiar to actors but often overlooked: the "moment before". Despite its importance, Cynthia finds that many actors need constant reminders about this crucial aspect of performance. One of the main jobs of actors is to create a believable and compelling story and to clearly communicate that story. Musical theatre is defined by the storytelling! If you don't have a crystal clear moment before, your song is going to feel disconnected, unmotivated, or that it's just not necessary for you to sing right now. A really specific, powerful “moment before” will seriously transform your self-tapes and your in-person auditions! Cynthia provides practical tips and exercises to help actors understand and embody the "moment before".
