06 Mar 2025 | S17E01 | Shafilea Ahmed (Warrington, Cheshire, 2003) | 00:36:06
In September 2003, 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed vanished from her home in Warrington, Cheshire, leaving behind a worrying trail of unanswered questions. A bright and ambitious student, she had dreams of independence, but those dreams clashed with the expectations placed upon her by her family. For years, her disappearance remained a mystery, until a shocking revelation finally exposed the horrifying truth. What really happened to Shafilea that night? And why did it take nearly a decade for justice to be served? By covering Shafilea's story, I hope to raise awareness of the devastating reality of so-called "honour-based" abuse and the urgent need to challenge it. In the early hours of August 5, 2000, Julie Tennant disappeared without a trace from her parents' home in Ballymena, Co Antrim. As days passed with no sign of the 21-year-old, a massive search effort was launched, but hopes of finding her alive faded with each passing moment. Just over two weeks later, the grim reality came to light - a shallow grave concealed Julie’s remains, bringing the missing person investigation to a devastating conclusion. But who was responsible for her death, and what led to her brutal fate? 20 Mar 2025 | S17E03 | Alf Wilkins (Grimsby, Lincolnshire, 2001) | 00:26:15
In February 2001, 67-year-old Alf Wilkins was killed in a fire deliberately set inside his Grimsby flat. But this wasn’t a random act of violence - it was the culmination of months of torment at the hands of his own neighbours. Despite being acquitted of an indecent assault charge in November 2000, Alf remained a target. The locals refused to believe his innocence, fueled by the hysteria of the News of the World's infamous 'name-and-shame' campaign. Branded as something he was not, Alf was harassed, threatened, and ultimately, his life was taken in an act of brutal, misplaced vigilante justice. 27 Mar 2025 | S17E04 | Nikkita Grender-Brunnock, Kelsey-May and Missy (Newport, South Wales, 2011) | 00:36:28
In 2011, 19-year-old Nikkita Grender was just weeks away from becoming a mother when her life was cut short in the most horrifying way. A fire tore through her Newport flat in the early hours of February 5, and as the smoke cleared, a darker truth emerged - one that pointed to someone close to home. What seemed like a tragic accident was something far more sinister, leaving a community in shock and a family searching for justice. This story is genuinely one of the most heartbreaking and disturbing I’ve ever researched in my four-plus years as a true crime podcaster. My sincerest condolences go to Paul, Marcia, and Luke. For a deeper understanding of this tragic case, I highly recommend you read Nikitta: A Mother’s Story by Marcia Grender, released in February 2016. You can also watch episode 3 of season 2 of Britain’s Darkest Taboos, which aired on October 23, 2013. 02 Apr 2025 | S17E05 | Susan Whiting (Bloxwich, Walsall, West Midlands, 2015) | 00:34:13
In August 2015, 20-year-old Susan Whiting vanished in Walsall after accepting an invitation to stay the night at a friend’s house. Susan, a kindhearted young woman with learning difficulties, was naturally trusting - something her killers exploited in the worst way imaginable. What began as an innocent sleepover soon turned into something far more sinister. By the time the truth emerged, it was already too late. 09 Apr 2025 | S17E06 | Renee and Andrew MacRae (Dalmagarry, Scottish Highlands, 1976) | 00:37:30
In November 1976, 36-year-old Renee MacRae and her 3-year-old son Andrew vanished without a trace after leaving their Inverness home for what was meant to be a weekend away. What followed was one of the most baffling missing persons cases Scotland has ever seen - a case with no suspects, no evidence and no answers for over four decades. When I first began researching this one, I knew nothing about it. What unfolded before my eyes as I dug deeper left me stunned. Layer by layer, the truth began to surface, and by the time it did, the damage had already been done. 16 Apr 2025 | S17E07 | Gerald Corrigan (Holyhead, Anglesey, 2019) | 00:30:41
In April 2019, the quiet Welsh island of Anglesey was rocked by a crime so bizarre and brutal it seemed almost fictional. 74-year-old Gerald Corrigan was outside his remote coastal home when he was struck by a single crossbow bolt - a weapon more associated with medieval warfare than modern-day Wales. What initially appeared to be a tragic accident quickly unraveled into something far more chilling. Behind the peaceful setting lay a tangled web of deception, secrecy and calculated violence - and Gerald was caught right in the middle of it. 23 Apr 2025 | S17E08 | Diana Garbutt (Melsonby, North Yorkshire, 2010) | 00:33:16
In March 2010, the small Yorkshire village of Melsonby awoke to the kind of horror rarely seen outside the pages of crime fiction. 40-year-old Diana Garbutt was found bludgeoned to death in her bed, and within minutes, a robbery was reported at the village Post Office just downstairs. The timeline made little sense, and the evidence raised more questions than answers. What followed was a trial full of contradictions, a marriage laid bare and a community left divided. But over a decade later, some believe the real story has yet to be told - and that the justice system may have gotten it very, very wrong. 08 Dec 2022 | Harold Shipman | Dr Death | Part 1 | Background | 00:29:25
In the season 7 special, I tell the story of Dr Harold Shipman, dubbed by the media as "Dr Death". Shipman was arrested on September 7, 1998, after police raided his home. The body of Kathleen Grundy, one of Shipman's former patients, was exhumed and examined after her daughter deemed it suspicious that her mother's will excluded her children but left a large sum to Shipman. Kathleen's body was found to contain traces of diamorphine, which contradicted her death being the result of old age as stated on her death certificate written by, you guessed it, Dr Harold Shipman. In total, Shipman was convicted of murdering 15 people, but the frightening reality is that his victim count is thought to be more than 250. In the first episode of this two-part special, I discuss Shipman's early life and background, his journey to becoming a GP with his own practice and what is thought to be his first-ever murder. Next week, I'll discuss the murders, the trial and its aftermath. 29 Jun 2022 | S06E04 | Iain Scoular | The Murders of Catherine McChord and Elizabeth Walton | 00:33:16
In the fourth episode of British Murders Season 6, I tell the story of Scottish double murderer Iain Scoular. Between October 1, 1982, and December 2, 1982, Iain Scoular murdered 36-year-old taxi driver Catherine McChord and 48-year-old midwife Elizabeth Walton in Cambuslang, Scotland. Initially, the police did not link the two murders. They had no suspects until Iain strolled into the police caravan HQ and told them he'd seen a stranger acting suspiciously on the night of Elizabeth's murder. In a bizarre turn of events, Iain's mum Jean's testimony inadvertently led to her son's capture. Iain was handed two life sentences on June 6, 1983, with a minimum term of 20 years. He was released from prison in 2003. 05 Oct 2022 | S07E03 | Lee Anstice | The Murder of Tracy Anstice | 00:25:38
In the third episode of British Murders Season 7, I tell the story of Lee Anstice. On August 26, 2011, Lee Anstice murdered his wife, Tracy, by stabbing her with a knife several times. Lee was in and out of psychiatric care in the months leading up to the murder and would go on to blame the voices in his head despite never mentioning such a thing throughout his time at mental health units. He was arrested on August 28, 2011, found guilty of Tracy's murder on March 9, 2012, and sentenced to life imprisonment with a 24-year minimum. Independent investigations company Verita published a report in May 2015 following an independent investigation into the care and treatment of Lee Anstice. They concluded that the murder of Tracy could have in no way been predicted or prevented. 20 Aug 2023 | Interview #38 | The True Story of 'Line of Duty' with Robin Jarossi | 00:35:01
I welcome journalist and writer Robin Jarossi back to the show in this interview episode to discuss his book 'The Real Ted Hastings: The True Story of the Copper at the Heart of Line of Duty'. 'Line of Duty' holds its status as today's defining TV crime drama. The conspiracy theme of the series chimes at a time when public institutions and representatives are distrusted. Ted Hastings, the show's head of anti-corruption, has emerged as the beating heart of the series. Robin's book reveals how the compelling drama reflects real crimes, events and figures, most notably that of Robert Mark and his battle against Met corruption. During his four years and eleven months as commissioner, Mark saw 478 men leave the force following or in anticipation of criminal/disciplinary proceedings. Departures in the previous decade had averaged about 16 a year. Mark's extraordinary career established the need for a dedicated team to investigate corruption that lives on today. Robin's book was released on May 11, 2023, and is available to purchase here: The Real Ted Hastings | Mardle Books Robin can be reached at his website: ***This interview was recorded on May 18, 2023. 26 Jul 2023 | S10E04 | The Murder of Jane Longhurst | Villain: Graham Coutts | 00:31:55
In this episode, I discuss the story of Jane Longhurst, a 31-year-old music teacher murdered by her best friend's partner. This chilling story of obsession, murder and justice began on March 14, 2003, when Graham Coutts killed Jane in his Hove flat. Coutts had been obsessed with physically harming women during sex since the age of 15 and fantasised about murdering someone in such a manner. He was initially handed a life sentence in February 2004 at Lewes Crown Court, but his charge was later quashed. A re-trial in 2007 ended with the same outcome, with Coutts being handed a life sentence at the Old Bailey that July with a minimum term of 26 years. 01 Oct 2023 | Interview #42 | Beyond the Prison Bars: A Conversation with Ex-Governor Vanessa Frake-Harris MBE | 01:02:51
I welcome Vanessa Frake-Harris MBE to the show in this interview episode to discuss her book, 'The Governor: My Life Inside Britain's Most Notorious Prisons.' Having worked for 16 years in a high-security women's prison dealing with the likes of Rosemary West and Myra Hindley, Vanessa Frake-Harris thought she'd seen it all. That was until she was transferred to the notorious Wormwood Scrubs. Thrust into a 'man's world', her no-nonsense approach and fearless attitude saw her swiftly rise through the ranks. From dealing with celebrity criminals and busting drug rings to recruiting informers and being subject to violent attacks, her hard-hitting but often humorous memoir reveals all about life behind bars in unflinching detail. Vanessa was awarded an MBE for her work for the prison service in 2012. She retired early from the prison service, after 26 years, while the Government funding was still in place and things were going well in her job as she wanted to go out on a high. More recently, in a complete career change, she baked cakes at Angela Reed's Cafe in Saffron Walden and volunteers at Wood Green Animal Sanctuary. Vanessa's book was released on April 15, 2021, and is available to purchase here: The Governor: My Life Inside Britain's Most Notorious Prisons | HarperCollins Publishers UK ***This interview was recorded on July 12, 2023. 11 Jan 2024 | S12E02 | The Murder of Paul Norfolk (Haverhill, Suffolk, 2011) | 00:25:38
In this episode, I tell the story of Paul Norfolk, a 77-year-old man killed in Haverhill, Suffolk, in December 2011. Paul lived in his semi-detached home with his wife, Esme, and her carer, 49-year-old Thailand native Bunthawee Rimmer, until Esme was moved to a residential home when her health drastically deteriorated after suffering a stroke. Rimmer claimed she then began a sexual relationship with Paul, which ultimately led to him signing over his house and entire estate, worth around £340,000, to her in late 2011. In the early hours of December 30, Rimmer murdered Paul by striking him in the head twelve times with a claw hammer. She then attempted to end her own life but was arrested and taken to a hospital in Cambridge to be treated for her injuries. A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found her guilty of murder by way of a majority verdict in July 2012, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 11 years. I tell the story of Anxiang Du and the Ding family in this episode. On April 29, 2011, Anxiang Du left his Coventry home and headed for Northampton. It was in a house there that he murdered Jeff, Helen, Xing and Alice Ding. The apparent motive behind the massacre was Anxiang losing a decade-long legal battle against the Dings, his former business partners. On November 28, 2013, Mr Justice Flaux handed Anxiang Du a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years. In the first episode of British Murders Season 6, I tell the story of Felix Spicer. In the early hours of May 25, 1890, Felix murdered two of his children whilst they slept before attempting to murder their mother, Mary. The couple's relationship was approaching its end, and Felix refused to allow the separation to happen. After being found guilty and sentenced to death, infamous British executioner James Berry hanged Felix on August 22, 1890. 28 Mar 2024 | Alison, Maartje and Anne | Part 2: Monsters Since Childhood | 00:28:39
When multiple women and children were raped in and around London's railway network during the early 1980s, detectives initially believed one man was responsible. They didn't realise that two men had committed the horrific acts and that their sadistic tendencies would soon turn to murder. In this two-part series, I discuss what became the nation’s biggest manhunt since the Peter Sutcliffe inquiry. This second and final part focuses on the perpetrators, John Duffy and David Mulcahy, who, since childhood, had been on a monstrous path of criminality. **Please listen to Part 1 before listening to Part 2** Join my Patreon community at patreon.com/britishmurders for exclusive perks, including early access to ad-free episodes, bonus content, exciting giveaways, and welcome goodies! 06 Sep 2023 | S10E10 | The Murder of Avril Dunn (Luton, Bedfordshire, 1985) | 00:26:47
In this episode, I tell the story of Avril Dunn, a 26-year-old woman murdered in Luton, Bedfordshire, on September 14, 1985. Avril went to The Heron, a local pub, that Saturday evening and was seen playing darts with some of the other regulars. Leaving at around 10.30 pm, Avril is thought to have been seen in the company of a tall, fair-haired man who drove away from the pub in a light-coloured Opel Manta. Her body was found at 7:30 am the following day. Still, her killer wouldn't be caught until thirteen years later when advances in DNA technology allowed scientists to match samples recovered from Avril's clothes to one of their key suspects at the time of her murder. Duncan Jackson, a father of four, was found guilty of Avril's murder in January 2000 and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years. Chillingly, Duncan took part in reenacting Avril's case in the March 1986 episode of Crimewatch UK. **The following is NOT a sponsored message** If you are suffering from an eating disorder or are concerned that someone you know is, please consider contacting Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity: Beat (ENG): 0808 801 0677 Beat (SCO): 0808 801 0432 Beat (WAL): 0808 801 0433 Beat (NI): 0808 801 0434 For all things British Murders, please visit my website: Intro music: David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet' linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic References: Hosted on Acast. 20 Oct 2024 | Interview #63 | Investigating the Thames Torso Murders: Sarah Bax Horton Discusses Her New Book 'Arm of Eve' | 00:38:20
I welcome true crime writer, researcher and analyst Sarah Bax Horton to the show in this interview episode to discuss her new book 'Arm of Eve: Investigating the Thames Torso Killer'. Jack the Ripper is often called the world’s most notorious unidentified killer, but he was not the first modern serial killer on the streets of London. Before him was another murderer who hunted from the River Thames – one arguably more sadistic and mercurial. The Thames Torso Killer has always lurked in the Ripper’s shadow, despite the fact he murdered and dismembered at least four people over two years. He started to kill in 1887, over a year before the Ripper, and his last murder was in 1889, almost ten months after the death of Mary Jane Kelly, the Ripper’s last victim. In Arm of Eve, Sarah conducts her own investigation and uses modern criminal profiling to come up with her own suspect – a known criminal who knew the Thames like the back of his hand. Set to be published by The History Press on October 31, 2024, you can pre-order a copy here: Arm of Eve | The History Press ***This interview was recorded on October 8, 2024. 09 Aug 2023 | S10E06 | The Murder of Alan Livesey | Villain: Margaret Livesey? | 00:27:06
In this episode, I discuss the story of Alan Livesey, a 14-year-old schoolboy and Army Cadet who was murdered in bizarre circumstances in 1979. On February 22, Alan was left home alone when his dad, Bob, left for his night shift, and his mum, Margaret, headed to the pub with her friend and secret lover. A few hours later, Alan was brutally murdered in his home, and his body was only discovered after Margaret sent her friend Eileen's son, Leslie, to her house to check on him. Margaret claimed to have headed straight for Eileen's house after returning from the pub, but she is suspected of having killed her son first and signed a confession stating as much before she quickly withdrew it. Add to that several witness testimonies indicating there was another male in the house with Alan whilst his mum was at the pub, which takes the complexity of this mystery to another level. Still, Margaret was found guilty of murdering Alan and handed a life sentence on July 26. She served ten years (incorrectly stated as being thirteen in the episode) before being released in 1989 and subsequently passed away in February 2001 after succumbing to throat cancer. The case aired on an episode of Rough Justice in October 1983, and many, including Margaret's other son, Derek, believe she is innocent. Sadly, it looks like the truth will now never be known. In the first episode of British Murders Season 7, I tell the story of Anthony Hardy. Between January and December 2002, Anthony Hardy murdered Sally White, Elizabeth Valad and Bridgette Maclennan in Camden Town, London. He initially got away with the murder of Sally White in January 2002 due to an incorrect cause of death confirmed by disgraced pathologist Dr Freddy Patel. Between April and November 2002, Hardy spent time in psychiatric units at several hospitals, and within six weeks of being released, he murdered Elizabeth Valad and Bridgette Maclennan. Hardy was arrested in January 2003 and received a life sentence that November. Mr Justice Keith upgraded his sentence to a whole life tariff in May 2010. Anthony Hardy died of sepsis at HM Prison Frankland on November 26, 2020. The two men were involved in an online love triangle story you must hear to believe. Thomas was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder. In this episode, I tell the story of Nicole Lewis, a 24-year-old mother-of-two murdered in Tuebrook, Merseyside, on March 5, 2002. Nicole and her fiancée, Mark Wilkinson, separated in February 2002 after a domestic incident the previous month. Mark had violently shaken Nicole so roughly after an argument that she had marks around her neck. A month after moving out, Nicole was invited to the couple's home after Wilkinson said he had arranged for a relationship counsellor to visit and talk to them about their problems. That was nothing more than a ruse. After heading upstairs with Wilkinson, Nicole was strangled to death and placed inside a wardrobe in the front bedroom. Wilkinson was found guilty of manslaughter, rather than murder, in September 2002 and received a four-year jail sentence, of which he served just 33 months. **The following are NOT sponsored messages** If you are experiencing domestic abuse or are concerned that someone you know is, please consider contacting one of the following charities: Refuge (the largest specialist domestic abuse organisation in the UK): 0808 2000 247 Respect (Men's Advice Line): 0808 801 0327 Galop (a national helpline for LGBT+ victims and survivors of abuse and violence): 0800 999 5428 Women's Aid (a national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children): helpline@womensaid.org.uk For those listening who live in Merseyside, like Nicole did, 'Worst Kept Secret' is a Merseyside project established to reduce domestic abuse and enhance support for survivors. In this episode, I tell the story of Ricky Wyatt, a 34-year-old father-of-one who was murdered in Laindon, Essex, on September 1, 2006. Ricky was confronted by 32-year-old Kathryn Taylor and 29-year-old Matthew Boulton in a car park on Little Lullaway before being stabbed by the former. The encounter was rumoured to have occurred over a £5 drug debt, but Judge Clegg dismissed that claim at Basildon Crown Court. Regardless, the jury found Taylor guilty of Ricky's murder, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years. In 2012, the murder of Natalie Esack sent shockwaves through the Kent town of Ashford. A talented hairdresser with a bright future, Natalie had reported her estranged husband’s abusive and threatening behaviour to the police multiple times, though each case went unprosecuted. Tragically, those warnings were left unaddressed, and in a brutal act of violence, her life was cut short in her own salon. Three days later, his lifeless body was discovered, sparking an investigation that would span decades. Roy’s tragic murder haunted investigators and the community alike as the years ticked by without justice. Then, in 2001, a breakthrough came when advances in DNA technology linked his killer to the crime - 33 years after the fact. The match was triggered by a chance arrest for drink-driving in 1999, unravelling a secret that had evaded detection for many years and finally bringing closure to one of Britain’s most heartbreaking cold cases. In this episode, I tell the story of Albert Dryden and Harry Collinson. In 1988, Albert Dryden built a sunken bungalow on his land without planning permission. Over the next three years, he had a constant back-and-forth battle with Derwentside District Council, who demanded he demolish the bungalow. On June 20, 1991, the council, led by principal planning officer Harry Collinson, arrived at Albert's land, intent on demolishing it themselves. Confronting the councilman with a gun, Albert shot and killed Harry in an incident captured by TV news cameras. Albert received a life sentence for Harry's murder on April 1, 1992, and passed away 26 years later on September 15, 2018. In 1998, the brutal murder of 11-year-old Wesley Neailey sent shockwaves through Newcastle and the entire nation. Wesley was a friendly and happy boy who trusted people easily, but that trust was cruelly exploited when he was lured away by someone he'd recently come into contact with. The person responsible for his death preyed on Wesley’s innocence, cutting his young life short in a horrifying act of violence. The murder not only devastated his family, but also exposed deeply concerning loopholes in the British legal system. I welcome Paul MacNamara to the show in this interview episode to discuss his debut book, 'The Criminal Class: Memoir of a Prison Teacher.' Paul was born in Sydney and has worked as an educator in several correctional centres in Australia. He has also worked as a teacher in the juvenile justice system. He never held a political position on the prison system and knew very little of the workings of a jail. Through 'The Criminal Class', Paul has created a thought-provoking tale based on his surreal and eye-opening experience that is - all at once - tragic, amusing and entertaining. The film and television rights to Paul's book have been acquired by Bondi Beach Productions, a multi-award-winning Film and TV production company with offices in Sydney, Los Angeles and New York. 31 Oct 2024 | S15E06 | Tania Moore (Ashbourne, Derbyshire, 2004) | 00:28:58
In 2004, the shocking murder of award-winning showjumper Tania Moore shattered the quiet community of Ashbourne. Tania, a popular and ambitious woman with a bright future, was driving home from work when her life was cruelly taken in a cold-blooded ambush by someone she had once trusted deeply - her ex-fiancé. For over a year leading up to her murder, Tania endured relentless abuse at the hands of her ex, including an orchestrated assault and robbery. Despite her courage in reporting the abuse and death threats on multiple occasions, systemic failures and overworked authorities allowed the danger to persist. As Domestic Abuse Awareness Month draws to a close, Tania’s story is a harrowing reminder of the dangers many face behind closed doors. While this month brings vital attention to the issue, the campaign against domestic abuse must continue year-round. 02 Jul 2023 | Interview #33 | The Lynette White Case: Author John Williams Reflects on His Career and the Story of 'The Cardiff Three' | 00:46:06
I welcome Welsh author John Williams to the show in this interview episode to discuss his career and the Lynette White murder case. In 1994, John released 'Bloody Valentine', a non-fiction book about the murder of a young woman called Lynette White in the Cardiff docklands (aka Tiger Bay) on Valentine's Day 1988. It's also the story of the miscarriage of justice after three black men, 'The Cardiff Three', were wrongly convicted of her murder. It's a brutally frank tale of racism and police corruption, terrible misogynist violence and the grim realities of sex work. It's a book that got so close to the bone that John was sued for libel by the police and received death threats from various minor characters. It's an unforgettable portrait of life in the underbelly of Thatcher's Britain. John also writes crime fiction under the name "John Lincoln", with his latest effort, 'Grey in the Dark', released on February 23, 2023. You can purchase 'Bloody Valentine' and 'Grey in the Dark' here: Bloody Valentine | Oldcastle Books Grey in the Dark | No Exit Press You can learn more about John's work on his website: ***This interview was recorded on May 25, 2023. 22 Feb 2024 | S12E08 | The Murder of Mary McLaughlin (Partick, Glasgow, 1984) | 00:31:03
In this episode, I tell the story of Mary McLaughlin, a 58-year-old woman killed in Partick, Glasgow, in September 1984. Mary was last seen in the company of a stranger, a man, on September 26, 1984, after spending the evening in a pub with her friends. Six days later, her body was found in her home on Laurel Street by Martin Cullen, one of her 11 children, and his then-partner. Somebody had strangled Mary with the cord of her dressing gown. Thirty-five years would pass before Police Scotland arrested serial sex offender Graham McGill after advances in DNA technology placed him in Mary's flat at the time of her murder. Judge Lord Burns handed McGill a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years in May 2021, almost four decades after Mary's murder. 16 Oct 2024 | The Strangeways Prison Riot (Manchester, Greater Manchester, 1990) | Feat. Megan and Neil from Mortal Musings | 00:36:34
In April 1990, one of the most notorious and violent prison uprisings in British history erupted at Strangeways Prison in Manchester. What began as a protest quickly spiralled into a full-blown riot, as prisoners seized control of the facility, venting their anger over brutal conditions and overcrowding. For 25 days, the world watched in shock as inmates set fires, battled guards, and took to the roof in defiance. The uprising left one inmate and prison officer dead, hundreds injured, and the prison in ruins, forcing a nationwide re-examination of the UK prison system. **This episode features Megan and Neil from Mortal Musings telling me (and you) the story of the riot. 18 May 2022 | Interview #9 | Claire McGowan (Writer and Lecturer) | 00:33:36
I welcome Northern Irish writer and lecturer Claire McGowan to the show in this interview episode to discuss Ireland's mysterious Vanishing Triangle cases. In 1990s Ireland, eight women were abducted and presumed murdered. They vanished without a trace, and no one was ever charged. Bestselling crime author Claire McGowan was determined to find out why. In her book on the case, Claire delivers a righteous polemic against the culture of secrecy, victim-blaming and shame that left those women's bodies unfound, their fates unknown, and their assailants unpunished. Claire grew up in a small village in Northern Ireland and now lives in London. She writes crime fiction as Claire McGowan and contemporary women's fiction as Eva Woods. Her latest book 'The Vanishing Triangle: The Murdered Women Ireland Forgot', released on May 1, 2022, is available to purchase here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vanishing-Triangle-Murdered-Ireland-Forgot/dp/1542035295/ You can find and support Claire McGowan here: For all things British Murders, please visit my website: https://www.britishmurders.com/ Intro music: David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet' https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic My recording equipment: Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone Cloud Microphone Cloudlifter CL1 Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface Rode PSA-1 Professional Studio Boom Arm Recorded using: Zencastr Edited in: Hindenberg PRO

11 Sep 2024 | S15E02 | Nicole Duke (Eastbourne, East Sussex, 1975) | 00:26:26
Nicole Duke was the kind of teenager every parent hopes for - trustworthy, responsible, and well-behaved. She had never caused her parents any trouble, but on Christmas Eve 1975, after a rare request to stay out late, Nicole never came home. That night, she had attended a disco in Eastbourne, where she was last seen in the company of a boy, with whom she shared a kiss. Hours later, on Christmas Morning, her lifeless body was discovered in a seaside shelter along the promenade. Nicole had been sexually assaulted and murdered, but a crucial clue, a broken neck chain found at the scene, led investigators to the killer just two days later. This story is one of the most shocking crimes the town has ever seen, yet it has been criminally underreported. In December 2005, the body of 30-year-old Annie Börjesson was discovered on Prestwick Beach in Ayrshire, Scotland. While police quickly ruled her death a tragic drowning, unsettling clues and unanswered questions began to emerge. Annie, a bright and independent Swedish woman, had no apparent reason to end her life. Yet, inconsistencies in the investigation, strange surveillance footage, and troubling theories surrounding her final days suggest something far more sinister may have occurred. 04 May 2022 | "The Muswell Hill Murderer" Dennis Nilsen Pt. 1: Background | 00:24:39
In the season 5 special of British Murders, I'm telling the story of "The Muswell Hill Murderer" Dennis Nilsen. Nilsen was arrested on suspicion of murder in February 1983 after some of the other tenants at 23 Cranley Gardens called in a plumber to deal with their blocked drains. The plumber found pieces of human flesh and bones in an outside maintenance hole and the waste pipe leading out of Nilsen's attic flat. While en route to the police station, Nilsen told the officers that he thought he had killed 15 or 16 people. In the first episode of this two-part special, I discuss Nilsen's background and upbringing, including his time in the Army and the Metropolitan Police. Next week, I'll discuss the brutal murders themselves, the trial and the aftermath. 16 Nov 2023 | S11E08 | The Murder of Louise Sellars (Appley Bridge, Greater Manchester, 1995) | 00:30:40
In this episode, I tell the story of Louise Sellars, a 15-year-old girl killed in Appley Bridge, Greater Manchester, on August 13, 1995. That Sunday evening, Louise left her home to meet her friend Kelly Morrisey and spent a few hours with her before the two parted ways. The last time Louise was seen was at around 9:30 pm. Her parents called the police after Louise failed to return home without letting them know where she was. A massive search was conducted in the hopes of finding her alive, but sadly, her body was found the following morning by a dog walker. It would take five years before Louise's killer was brought to justice, thanks to advances in DNA technology. Ultimately, it was a discarded cigarette butt that led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Darren Ashurst, who was 21 years old when he killed Louise. A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Ashurst guilty of murder on November 1, 2000, with Mrs Justice Rafferty handing him a life sentence. He served 20 years in total and was released from prison in 2020.
