10 Mar 2020 | How to Lead in a Crisis | 00:25:15
It’s inevitable that at some point in your life you will face a situation that will require you to remain calm under pressure. Your child is choking, a customer is irate and irrational, a team member is not pulling his weight, you come upon a car accident, you fly your aircraft through a flock of birds on take-off and lose all of your engines… How you respond to stressful situations will make or break you as a leader. As leaders, you have no choice but to remain calm, regardless of the situation. Therefore it’s required leaders learn how to compartmentalize their emotions and fear. A compartmentalization technique I learned in aviation is what’s called “Hack the Clock”. In this podcast, I discuss compartmentalization techniques that I learned in flight school that can help you remain calm in stressful situations.

27 Apr 2020 | Leadership Starts At The Top...But The Middle & Below Takes It Across The Goal Line | 00:17:10
In many of my keynotes, I informally poll the audience on if they view themselves as leaders or not. On average less than 1/3 of those polled actually raise their hand. Here are some of the typical responses from those who didn't raise their hand:
This is probably the biggest misconception about leadership; this belief that leadership comes from having a position or title. That you can’t lead if you’re not at the top. In reality, leadership isn't something you wait around for. It's all about influence. And to become influential you must intentionally add value to everyone, in every situation. When you grasp this concept you will start to see how leadership is all about choice, and that you can begin to lead from where you're at right now. No position or title is needed. In this episode, we deep dive into how we can shift our mindset and start adding value no-matter where we are in our lives. Great leadership is learned, and great leaders are made, from the middle and below in organizations. It's down in the trenches where real leadership challenges are met and solved. It's about having the consistency & courage to meet these challenges head-on, at the lower levels, and being prepared when the higher leadership calling presents itself. We all have way more influence than we realize. Once we become aware of this potential, we then realize that even though good leadership starts at the top, it's the middle & below that will take it across the finish line.

13 Mar 2021 | Richard Shares His 5 C's of Leadership | 00:20:18
How important is charisma when it comes to leadership? When we think of leadership or ask people to define what makes a great leader, we often gravitate to the high-profile leaders with big egos and larger-than-life personalities. In Nov 2011, Forbes published an article titled "Egomaniacs make the best leaders” In this article, they reference a study by four professors that studied 78 CEOs in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry and they concluded that “narcissism and hunger for attention lead to innovation and daring decision-making.” There is certainly a ring of truth to this theory; after reading the Steve Jobs biography I’m convinced that Steve Jobs's genius and creativity were driven by his ego and narcissism. Personally, I’m less concerned about ego and a larger-than-life personality being the bench mark definition of great leadership. I’m a believer that all of us should think and act like leaders; that we all have the potential to be great in some sort of leadership capacity. I also think that people often don’t think of themselves as leaders because they feel they don’t have the personality or “charisma” to be a leader. I have seen many aspiring leaders spend a great deal of energy and effort on looking or acting the part of the leader. All of their leadership development centered on developing their charisma. Instead of studying on how to develop a larger-than-life personality, one should spend their time and energy learning how to be:
Regardless of our charismatic style, all of us can become better leaders if we devoted our life to these Five-“Cs”; instead of developing a personality. Charisma, for the most part, is more of a God-given talent. It’s great if you have it; but you will get more return on your personal growth investment learning how to be calm, confident, consistent, and courageous in every aspect of your life. Jim Collins in his book “Good to Great” has a great chapter on this topic called “Level-5 Leadership”. In his book, he argues that all of the “Great” companies of our time had “Level-5” leaders at the helm. Leader-5 leaders:
Charisma can be a great enhancer and motivator to leadership, but it has to be backed up with substance and genuine character for it to be effective and long-lasting. Charisma can also be a dangerous thing; it’s an authority that defies natural logic. Regardless, history is replete with tragic example upon tragic example of people following charismatic leaders without character and substance. Great leadership is not defined by your charisma. Great leaders focus on learning how to be modest & willful, humble & fearless.

It's so easy to get sucked into the minutia of everyday business, to fail in our leadership obligation and become a micro-manager. Professional aviation demands that pilots stay situationally aware at all times and fight for the big picture. There are numerous mishaps throughout aviation history where the flight crew got hyperfocused on a certain task or abnormal situation, leading to tragedy. In order to fight for the big picture you have to:

27 Feb 2020 | Building a Culture of Rapid Leadership | 00:21:32
Rapid Leadership is all about distributing leadership responsibility throughout your entire organization. It's all about empowerment & extending trust. A fully realized culture of “Decentralized Decision Making” is all about pushing the decision-making authority to the absolute lowest level. Creating an environment where people ask for “forgiveness” instead of “permission” We think we need to focus on highly detailed plans, telling our folks “how” to do their job. Instead, we should be focusing on communicating “what” outcomes we need...leaving the “how” up to them This introduces accountability & initiative into the organization. As the leader focus exclusively on the outcomes, “big picture”, and the why of your objective.

07 Mar 2022 | Neil Giraldo | Living a Life of Expression, Innovation, & Creativity | 01:23:43
Neil Giraldo was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio. Immersed in the culture of his beloved Sicilian ancestry, his parents Anthony and Angela Giraldo instilled the love of music at a young age, giving Neil his first guitar at the age of six, with the hopes that he and his sister, Priscilla, who played the accordion, could entertain family and friends with songs from the old country after church on Sundays. As Neil got older, his mentor, Uncle Tim, introduced him to revolutionary bands like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and all the other great guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll bands of the 1960s. Finding new and innovative ways to shadow path his way into songs, Neil developed a discipline early on of not just playing along to his favorite artists but creating different parts for himself within those tracks. At the same time, the budding guitar artist also became proficient on piano by continuously practicing along to Chuck Berry (Johnnie Johnson), Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis records. His interest in percussion instruments soon followed, practicing the drums to Simon & Garfunkel albums he explored how different rhythms could alter the complexion of songs. These practices and disciplines created the foundation for his future success as an innovative record producer and musician. Giraldo began his professional career in 1978 as a key member of the Rick Derringer band after competing against 200 other guitarists for the position. It wasn’t long before Rick discovered Giraldo’s piano playing prowess and quickly put those skills to work in the studio for the recording Guitars and Women. In the spring of 1979, Mike Chapman introduced Giraldo to an up-and-coming singer named Pat Benatar who had recently signed to Chrysalis Records. While impressed with the young vocalist, Chapman felt she needed a musical partner who could facilitate the creation of a sound both identifiable and powerful. Over the years Neil has produced some of their biggest hits including “Love is a Battlefield” and “We Belong.” With a back catalog of more than 100 songs written and more than 45 million records sold, Giraldo has written, produced, arranged, and recorded for Pat Benatar, John Waite, Rick Springfield, Kenny Loggins, Steve Forbert, The Del Lords, Beth Hart, The Coors, and others, which include many Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning hits. Today, Giraldo’s career is as dynamic and diverse as ever. He is in the process of completing two books – one an autobiographical novel, one a motivational book on the psychology of creating. He is further expanding his Bel Chiasso entertainment company, which is developing a variety of television, film and Broadway theater projects. On May 16th 2016 Neil founded Three Chord Bourbon to celebrate creativity, community, and tradition by bringing together the award-winning musician and producer’s love of whiskey and music with his passion for conversations with family and friends.
Show Highlights: 09:05 – The power and necessity of integrity, intuition, & gratitude. Neil pays tribute to his father. 12:30 – How Neil got started playing music. Neil pays tribute to his mother and her value of discipline. Also, how he was introduced to Rock-n-Roll and how his cousin “Skeeter” influenced his guitar playing. 18:50 – How intuition & feel is the key to his playing and production styles; being present and how “over-thinking” destroys creativity. Also a deep dive into how he values producing and dissecting songs. 26:30 – A deep dive on Neil’s “percussive” style of playing guitar. 35:00 – Neil’s mission & vison of Three Chord Bourbon. It’s all about giving back to musicians and teaching them how to do the “business” side of music.

18 Mar 2019 | Solo Episode: Putting the Pin Back in the Grenade | 00:15:45
Download Episode Here How we respond to these perceived "grenades" being thrown is worthy of intentional focus. What do you do when these figurative grenades are thrown? Do you run for your life? Do you deflect and give it to somebody else because you don't want to deal with it exploding in your face? Or are you a hero that jumps on the grenade and takes one for the team? Neither of these actions is ideal. Yes, leadership starts at the top...but it's the middle and below that brings it across the finish line. In this episode, I detail the tactics to effectively deal with leadership disruptions and figurative "grenades" within your organization. When a perceived grenade is thrown, true leaders sit there in a composed manner, watch it spin around, and with courage and calmness and composure to pick it up and put the pin in. Then they asked the question to the thrower and say, "I see this as important. What do you want me to do with this?". This stops the perceived chaos, extracts the intent, & helps everyone become a better leader.

I wanted to work hard and earn every position I ever held. That’s the way my dad always wanted it. These nine lessons have changed the way I lead in business and the way I live my personal life. They’re lessons I wish someone had shared with me before I learned them the hard way, which is why I now gladly pass them along.” In her highly anticipated book, Earnhardt Miller shares the most important lessons she’s learned over the course of her life that have impacted her incredible success:
According to Earnhardt Miller, these lessons aren’t a blueprint for success; they are the values and principles that have personally shaped her, not only as a high-profile executive but as a daughter, sister, wife, and mother. Austin Mao is an entrepreneur, author, poet, and keynote speaker on the intersection of science and spirituality, psychology, and shamanism.
He is a co-founder of Ceremonia, a non-profit psychedelic church facilitating change makers and creators through what 96% of alumni share as the most profound experience of their lives. He has guided more than 400 founders including Fortune 500 executives, Silicon Valley Unicorn founders, and major blockchain leaders through their transformation towards living a life of inspired creativity, purpose, and peace.
Austin Mao shares a process of “Modern Enlightenment”–a path to Awaken, Heal, and Manifest–that is informed by the most advanced technologies of psychotherapy and neuroscience combined with ancient shamanistic wisdom and spiritual traditions. He shares a range of direct experiences with some of the most prominent business leaders of the modern world, helping them harness their inner power to create greater impact through love and inspired creation.
Chuchu Wang strongly believes in the power of self-experience and acknowledges the effectiveness of Ceremonia. Chuchu recognizes the importance of facilitating the process of inner healing and empowerment rather than focusing solely on the content or story that individuals may be experiencing. By enabling others to find their connection to inner healing intelligence, Chuchu aims to assist individuals in their journey towards healing, growth, and empowerment, while teaching them valuable truths along the way.
In today's episode, we have a fascinating discussion with our guests, Austin Mao and ChuChu Wang, about the transformative power of psychedelic therapy. We dive deep into the difference between the medical model and the ceremony model for psychedelic therapy, exploring the use of psilocybin mushrooms and Ayahuasca. Austin and Chuchu share their personal experiences with these substances and discuss why they believe they integrate medicine, psychology, and spirituality. They also shed light on the history and misconceptions surrounding psilocybin mushrooms and Ayahuasca and the potential therapeutic benefits they hold.

03 Sep 2020 | What if It All Ended Tonight? | 00:18:32
What if you knew that today was going to be your last day? Would you have been happy? Would you be proud of how you lived your life? What if you knew ten years ago that your life was going be over on this day? How would you have lived your life differently? In this episode, I explore the universal truth that the universe is impersonal and will try to stop you from dreams. It is, therefore, up to you and only you to become intentional about embracing that calling in your gut and start living a life of significance. It's not about pursuing happiness, rather it's embracing the world and your circumstances for what they are and start living fully. Your biggest fear should be the regret of not pursuing activities and actions that will get you closer to your purpose and universal obligation. It's about becoming insatiably curious, fueling energies towards your passions, and living a life of significance.

16 Apr 2020 | Overcoming Adversity & Seizing Opportunity with Super-Agent Nez Balelo | 00:49:34
Nice guys finish first. Nez Balelo is a Major League Baseball super-agent, representing such players as Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels, Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona D-Back' Adam Jones and many more. Balelo also stands out as an anomaly. Raised in San Diego Ca, first-generation Portuguese descent where his family migrated from the Madeira Islands in Portugal and was raised in the Commercial fishing industry, Balelo would become a promising MLB infielder before a devastating accident cut short his playing days. Adversity and opportunity became the catalysts for Balelo positioning himself as one of the most humble, venerable, and successful professionals in all of sports. After a horrific accident took him permanently out of the lineup, Nez focused on his entrepreneurial skills and opened up a development baseball school outside of Los Angeles called West Coast Baseball School. At the same time accepted a job with the Atlanta Braves in a Hybrid development, Scouting and consulting role. After a 10-year run working for the Braves and learning the Organization business along with building and purchasing numerous baseball facilities, Balelo took his drive to another level and walked away from the Braves and Sold all of his schools and branding license and started a Sports Agency. Balelo brought with him several players who he developed during these years to start the Agency who all made it to the Major Leagues. After 3 years Balelo already established himself as a name in the Sports agency world having numerous first-round picks and players already entering into the Major Leagues, was asked to join IMG Sports group in a Senior Executive position which eventually moved over to CAA Entertainment to start the Sports group in 2006. As a major player with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Nez Balelo helps keep CAA Sports atop the standings in MLB player signings. When it comes to the dotted line, Nez is the penultimate example of how MLB players are represented and supported. Instilled with dedication and tenacity from working alongside his father, Balelo knows how ethics, mindset, commitment, and staying active play such a vital role in the prosperity of your organization that led him to the rightful place on Forbes “Most Powerful Sports Agents in the World” list.
18 Mar 2020 | Like It or Not, You're a Role Model | 00:25:47
Whether you know it; whether you like it or not: You are a Role Model! It's about "Setting the Example"; a basic leadership fundamental. I usually lead off with this tenant in all of my leadership talks. It’s one of those basic, common sense, leadership principles that when we hear it we say to ourselves, “Of course, I understand that”. But successful leaders realize that you have to be intentional about setting the example. It’s easy to get complacent and forget that we are always on a stage; that one of the prices of leadership is personal freedom and being under a constant spotlight. In this latest Dose of Leadership podcast episode I discuss the following concepts as it relates to “Setting the Example”:
At the end of the day, Setting the Example is simply doing the right thing, even when no-one is looking.

John DeVine is the Head of Global Operations for Facebook. He is a former Navy officer who has transitioned into very well-known leader in the tech world, but his military roots run deep — even at Facebook. DeVine spent three of his eight years of active duty on a submarine, after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy. After leaving the Navy, DeVine leveraged the lessons he learned at sea in leadership roles at McKinsey & Company before heading to Silicon Valley to work in tech. In June 2013, DeVine became the Senior Vice President of Yahoo’s Global Operations. Just five years later, DeVine was named the Vice President of Facebook’s Global Operations, leading the massive social media platform in combating misinformation as well as focusing efforts on integrity. DeVine began his new role as Head of Global Operations at Facebook shortly before a global pandemic and a contentious presidential election. This is one of my favorite conversations where John takes us through his three chapters of leadership development: Military, McKenzie, Facebook.
