23 Aug 2024 | Carry On Abroad (w/ Andy Clarke) | 01:27:37
While we wait for series three in the autumn, here's a bank holiday treat of a mini-series. What better way to spend a bank holiday weekend than with British comedy institution Carry On?
Over the next three days, Rob and Guy scratch the surface of the comedy behemoth, choosing one film from the massive back catalogue each.
We start our series of three with a choice from our guest. TV's Andy Clarke. Writer, presenter and Carry On fanatic. Who better to make our first pick and provide some expert analysis? (particularly for Guy, who'd inexplicably never before seen a Carry On)
Andy kicks us off with Carry On Abroad. Widely regarded by fans and critics as the last good Carry On Film and certainly the final one with the bulk of the core cast. James, Williams, Connor, Windsor, Whitfield, Sims and Hawtry make their way to the beautiful resort of El's Bells in "the Med". In lieu of budget though, Pinewood studios must double for an exotic resort.
Join the three of us for sun, sea and Splendid Kenneth Williams impressions as we Carry On Abroad.

14 May 2024 | S02 E05 - Kevin & Perry Go Large (w/ Ben Clark) | 01:45:56
As the Venga Boys once said, "We're going to Ibiza"... unfortunately the BritCom goes to the Movies budget didn't stretch as far as actually going to the Balearics, but via the magic of podcasting, we can transport you there by discussing Kevin and Perry Go Large.
Ben Clark joins Guy and Rob for this episode. The writer, director, and comedian is also one-third of Pappys and had, up until this moment, never seen the movie. Luckily he's still talking to us!
We talk about the origins of Kevin the teenager from Kevin the annoying little brother in Harry Enfield's Television Programme to Superstar DJ with sidekick Perry, played by the inimitable Kathy Burke. Kevin became the benchmark by which all millennial teenage boys were (rightly or wrongly) compared.
But as big a cultural phenomenon as Kevin and Perry were (along with many other of Enfield and Burke's characters) how did that translate to the big screen? How kind has the last quarter of a century been to the movie and of course, its memorable soundtrack packed with dance anthems. Join Rob, Guy, and Ben to find out.

20 Dec 2023 | S01 E11 - Love Actually *Christmas Special* (w/ Monica Sagar) | 01:55:32
The main series may be over, but we’ve one more festive treat. Guy and Rob joined by actor Monica Sagar to discuss the divisive Christmas classic on its 20th birthday, Love Actually. We also get stuck into the Vicar of Dibley Christmas special, which is perhaps the most tonally similar to Love Actually of all of Richard Curtis’ TV work. A movie that’s been reappraised by both its cheerleaders and detractors over the course of the past two decades, Love Actually has also caused Richard Curtis himself to address things he would rather have changed with his time again. With a multitude of plots, some classic rom-com, some a bit more esoteric, and some just downright weird and difficult to defend, our panel try their best to revisit with an open mind to see where it will place in the final league rankings of series one of Britcom Goes to the Movies. We will also crown the series one winner of the Britcom Goes to the Movies quiz. After episode 10, Guy led for the first time in the series, but who would come out on top? 25 Oct 2023 | S01 E03 - Man About The House (1974) | 01:41:55
Episode 3 of Britcom Goes to the Movies sees Guy and Rob tackle their first direct TV Sitcom Spin-off. Man About the House from 1974 was one of a glut of Hammer produced big screen versions of beloved TV sitcoms and the show, which debuted in 1973 spawned not only this film, but two other spin-off series, a US remake, and two US spin-offs. You could say it’s a bit of a big hitter.
However, the 1970s sensibilities and style of humour filled at least one of us with dread. Find out if those concerns were warranted as we dissect a 70s crowd pleaser which may or may not have aged well.
As well as Man About the House, we discuss Hammer Pictures, Love Thy Neighbour, Three’s Company, and much more. Our ongoing quiz continues to remain a close-run thing and our ranking list is beginning to take shape.

13 Dec 2023 | S01 E10 - The Rebel (1961) | 01:40:46
We've reached the magical tenth installment and what better way to round off the regular series than by following our newest film so far, with our oldest. The Rebel from 1961 is the earliest example we've found yet of transporting a character (Tony Hancock) out of his usual environment of 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam into new foreign and exotic climes. A blueprint for many, many BritCom adaptations to come. As Guy and Rob discuss, this is not the only thing for which Hancock, Ray Galton, and Alan Simpson set the blueprint. Join us as we talk all things Hancock up to The Rebel, including his beginnings in panto and variety and his most celebrated work, Hancock's Half Hour. 16 Apr 2024 | S02 E01 - Porridge (1979) | 01:34:30
We're back for our difficult second series. Guy and Rob carefully curated a list of films that span eight decades and showcase all manner of British comedy....or we just picked some random films from the long list. I forget now. Series two begins with a classic sitcom spin-off. The seventh favourite British sitcom of all time (as recorded in 2004 in a BBC light entertainment list show, so legally binding) the Ronnie Barker vehicle Porridge! Lots to get through for our intrepid hosts, including pondering the likely career trajectory of Richard Beckinsale (had he not been taken from us so early), the likelihood of being able to stand a 12 month stretch of Norman Stanley Fletcher's wise cracks without lamping him and the continued quest to ascertain exactly what makes the comedy transfer from small to big screen, such a difficult process. Our master league table continues from series one, but the quiz scores are reset with Rob having narrowly taken victory in series one. So nerks and nerkettes, enjoy Porridge! 18 Jun 2024 | S02 E10 - Churchill: The Hollywood Years (2004) | 01:35:03
It feels like only yesterday we were getting stuck into some Porridge and now Series 2 of BritCom Goes to the Movies, draws to a close with 2004’s Churchill: The Hollywood Years. A movie that was met with a lukewarm critical reception and a limited release, leaving it with a somewhat tarnished at worst, and forgettable at best legacy.
...but is any of that fair? Both Rob and Guy remembered loving it. The film had the cream of TV comedy talent of the time and all masterminded by Mr. Comic Strip Presents Peter Richardson, with a blueprint similar to one of his best episodes, The Strike. Is it really as bad as all that? There’s a deep dive into The Comic Strip from its early days as a cabaret show, to a mockumentary directed by Julian Temple, to the opening night of Channel 4. This show gave the world Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, French and Saunders, Robbie Coltraine, Keith Allen, Alexi Sayle, Phil Cornwell...the list goes on! There’s the small matter of crowning the series quiz champion, with Rob needing an absolute miracle to defend his title. What a series it’s been, with two new number ones, could we have a third? 23 Apr 2024 | S02 E02 - Sightseers (w/ Jessica Regan) | 01:46:08
Episode 2 of Series 2 sees another crossover with the Best Pick Podcast as another of its hosts Jessica Regan (our second guest after Tom Salinsky) joins to talk about the 2012 darkest of dark comedies Sightseers. Jess provided unparalleled insight into director Ben Wheatley’s process, starring as she did in his 2009 sketch show The Wrong Door. We take a closer look at The Wrong Door, a show in which dinosaurs are dates, Pirates hijack commuter trains and Matt Berry puts John Virgo’s trick shots in the shade, as well as a deep dive into Wheatley’s third feature-length film, which became the first big screen starring roles for comedy collaborators Steve Oram and Alice Lowe. It helped to have a voice of Irish sanity to help assess a movie that so precisely captures a slice of English eccentricity, repressed anger and downright insanity! We also take a look at the use of double, double pop covers for needle drops and a supporting cast of some of the British movie industry’s very best bit players. How would Guy and Rob get on with Jess’ questions on the Oram and Lowe and could we have a new contender for the top spot? Find out in episode two. 15 Nov 2023 | S01 E06 - The Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer (w/ Tom Salinsky) | 01:49:05
Episode six of Britcom Goes to the Movies marks the halfway point of the series and this week we’re going all the back to 1970. Having said that the themes and satire from The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer are all too prescient in 2023. Guy and Rob are joined to talk all things Peter Cook, David Frost and of course The Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer by writer, producer and host of the Best Pick Podcast Tom Salinsky. Tom’s insights and political context for this episode were invaluable and he also wrote and hosted our quiz. Among other things, we talk about That Was The Week That Was, Goodbye Again, Frost/Nixon, and a sprinkling of Monty Python. We wouldn’t always urge listeners to watch the film we’re talking about (Lesbian Vampire Killers we’re looking at you) but The Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer is worth everyone’s time, if not for anything other than Arthur Lowe. 11 Oct 2023 | S01 E01 Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009) | 01:34:24
Series one episode one of Britcom Goes to the Movies. After a low-brow discussion in a high-end Leeds boozer, Guy Walker and Rob Heath decided to set on a quest to definitively rank as many British comedy small to big/screen transfers as they could before they or more importantly their audience got bored of it. Building the long list of movies that contained some kind of programme, sketch, or talent crossover was the fun bit, then the real work began.
It was decided that Britcom Goes to the Movies would kick off with the 2009 cinematic outing of the Horne & Corden partnership, Lesbian Vampire Killers. This was a film that had become a byword for terrible TV comedy transfers, which is why neither of our presenters had ever seen it. Was this Hammer Horror-inflected comedy really as bad as everyone said? There was only one way to find out.
Charting LVK’s origins all the way from the universally loved Gavin & Stacy to the unanimously slated late-noughties sketch show Horne & Corden, this is a deep dive into all things Lesbian Vampire Killers. As a quirk of format at the end of this episode this film would sit both top and bottom of the BGTTM rankings list, but how long would it stay at either end?

06 Dec 2023 | S01 E09 - People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan (w/ Daisy Edwards) | 01:41:41
Hold tight man like Guy and Rob as Britcom Crew are joined by galdem Daisy Edwards from the W-Rated Possee. That’s right, episode nine is all about People Just Do Nothing and it’s movie spin-off Big in Japan. It was great to have Daisy (a self confessed PJDN fan) to talk about a film she knew she liked as opposed to some of the dross she usually gets served in her W-Rated podcast.
There’s plenty of UK garage chat as Guy looks on in bewilderment with Rob and Daisy chatting about their all-time favourite garage tracks. At Britcom Goes to the Movies we’ve had a mixed bag of direct sitcom spin-offs. Could People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan, tickle our funny bones as much as or more than the Inbetweeners Movie, or will it be a straight-up Man About The House style disappointment? There is no let-off this bank holiday as we hit you with another Carry On straight away. This time it's Rob's pick. Critic and hipster's choice, Carry On Screaming. It's a Hammer Horror Homage but without the scariest cast member Sid James, replaced to great effect by Harry H Corbett. 12 Jun 2024 | S02 E09 - The Mouse That Roared (w/ Tyler Adams) | 01:36:56
Our second Goon-related podcast of the series, so who better to join Rob and Guy to talk about all things Peter Sellers, A Show Called Fred, and The Mouse That Roared, than host of The Goon Pod, Tyler Adams? There was expert insight galore as BritCom Goes to the Movies tackled its earliest film yet.
An early high-concept outing for Sellers’ many faces and voices on the big screen as he channeled his inner Alec Guinness to play three of the main characters in this Anglo-American cult classic (not the first one of those we’ve profiled in this series either).
There are many unexpected mentions of The Simpsons, Alan Partridge and The Fast Show, proving just how long a shadow Peter Sellers has cast on the comedy world for decades.
Guy had a huge lead over Rob in the quiz coming into this episode, with only one more to go, Rob would need to buck up his ideas…and quickly!

21 May 2024 | S02 E06 - The Bed Sitting Room (1969) | 01:40:33
Over halfway through series two of Britcom Goes to the Movies we’re back to the 1960s....and the 50s as we look at Spike Milliagn, the Goon Show, and the Post-Apocalyptic surreal comedy The Bed Sitting Room. This is the first of our episodes in which we look at a radio show as our source material (if you don’t include Hancock’s Half Hour for The Rebel in series one).
This film contains two of the three (or is it four) Goons as well as a plethora of British comedy talent of the time. Many of whom we’ve seen appear in previous episodes, including Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Frank Thornton, and of course Arthur Lowe, who is the Britcom Goes to the Movies record appearance maker so far. In a series and a half, Rob and Guy have been fairly united on their approval or disapproval of a film, but this time there is some serious disagreement. What will this mean for the rankings and could the non-believer yet be brought round to reform his opinion? All the while, the quiz scores are delicately poised with Rob having a one-point lead. 01 Nov 2023 | S01 E04 - Mike Bassett: England Manager (w/ Steve Dunne) | 01:50:17
Episode four already?! Guy and Rob are building up a head of steam and are joined for the first time by a guest. TV Writer Steve Dunne chips in with his thoughts on the 2001 football fan favourite Mike Bassett: England Manager.
Ricky Tomlinson, at the height of his Jim Royle fame, starred as the ever-optimistic lower league football manager turned England’s savior at a time when the real England team was looking to the continent in Sven Goran Eriksson and playing some of the most memorable matches in the last 30 years. As we’ll hear, there were moments when art and life intertwined.
We delve deep into not only Mike Bassett but also the Royle Family and the film’s major inspiration, the groundbreaking documentary, The Impossible Job. But does this film work on any level if not being watched by someone who is already a football fan?

04 Jun 2024 | S02 E08 - Steptoe & Son (1972) | 01:36:57
With Old Ned still ringing in their ears, Rob and Guy sat down to record episode 8: Steptoe and Son. An enduring sitcom with a huge legacy, written by a couple of comedy pioneers…but let’s not forget this is a movie spin-off from the 70s, by which all low bars apparently, should be judged.
Surely that can’t be the case for a pair of characters still held in such high esteem even now, situations as timeless as the day is long and a budget to be envious of….well, let’s not give anything away. The classic traps of lack of TV network reigning in are a jaunt abroad and a hurried script.
All this plus some chat about Mr Acker Bilk and his impressive record, a public toilet in Shepherd’s Bush, class warfare by sporting preference, and a chance for Rob to get back in the running for the series quiz title. Join Britcom Goes to the Movies for Steptoe & Son!

28 May 2024 | S02 E07 - Shaun of the Dead (w/ Ross Birks) | 01:41:28
Anger, Pain, Fear, Aggression….Watercolours and laughs! As we know from our special on Britain’s Best Sitcom, Spaced is in both Guy and Rob’s top 5, so neither could contain their excitement when it came to talking about Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and Edgar Wright’s seminal turn of the century pop-culture-reference-a-thon.
Skip to the end….but there’s more. Joining our very own Tim and Daisy was filmmaker Ross Birks, fresh from stealing a tank and trying to invade Paris, to lend his two penn’orth. We could have done a whole two hours on that, but of course, this is a movie podcast so what better than the film inspired by a short segment in an episode of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead?
The movie that spawned the genre Zom Rom Com was 20 years old at the time of recording and all three of our panelists made no secret of their love, quotability, and rewatchabilty of one of the most influential films of the 00s… despite itself making so many references to all three of the genres it drew from.
After a truly terrible showing in last week’s quiz, who would break the deadlock this week with Ross’ fiendishly difficult questions?
So let’s take the car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, listen to Britcom Goes To the Movies, and wait for all of this to blow over.

07 May 2024 | S02 E04 - Drop Dead Fred (w/ Charlotte White) | 01:42:57
Four episodes deep into our difficult second series, and to make it a little easier, we’ve enlisted the help of an expert. It’s fair to say Rob and Guy had probably never really considered the impact of the world of Psychotherapy, early 90s favourite Drop Dead Fred had...but it did! In a big way and to help us get to grips with that we enlisted Psychotherapist Charlotte White to talk not only about the significance of imaginary friends but also the roles of women and girls in cinema and abusive relationships. Don’t worry, this is a comedy...or Is it? This film tests both aspects of the criteria of our podcast in that it is arguably neither British nor comedy! But how can you have British Cinema without Working Title and how can you say a film starring Rik Mayall is not a comedy? As our source material, we go back to the beginning of TV for Rik and talk about The Young Ones, a seminal piece of British comedy history. It changed the British Sitcom forever (while maintaining a laughter track) influencing the entire generation of comedians that came after it, not to mention its admiration across the pond, becoming the first non-musical show to be broadcast on MTV. But was it any good and has it held up over time? Find out what we think about The Young Ones and Drop Dead Fred in episode 4.
Our list continues to grow. We’ve already had a new number one in this series, could there be another? The quiz is hotting up this series, with Rob leveling the scores at 7-7 in episode three, with Charlotte writing the questions this time, who could take the lead after four episodes? 22 Nov 2023 | S01 E07 - The Inbetweeners Movie (2011) | 01:49:25
A couple of Podcast fwends set out on episode seven of Britcom Goes to the Movies. Rob and Guy dissect their most recent film yet, the Inbetweeners Movie. This is the second of the series to be a direct sitcom to big screen transfer and one both our hosts were very familiar with. Whether you are a briefcase wanker, bus wanker or bumder…or all of the above, this is a must-listen episode for any fan of The Inbetweeners. Has the comedy of the series and film held up, or has it aged like milk? As well as The Inbetweeners, Rob and Guy discuss Look Around You, Everyone Else Burns, Fresh Meat, Derry Girls, and Drifters amongst others. Plus, as we get to the business end of the series quiz we’ll see if Rob can pull ahead even further or if Guy can bridge the deficit. 29 Feb 2024 | Special: Britain's Best Sitcom | 00:59:56
It's not quite time for the second series of Britcom Goes to the Movies yet, but in the meantime, we've prepared a top ten British sitcoms special.
In 2004 Jonathan Ross hosted Britain's Best Sitcom on the BBC. Audiences were polled on their favourite British sitcom. A top 50 list was compiled, episode one rattled through numbers 50-11 at a dismissive pace and then audiences were polled once again on the top ten.
This time, each sitcom from the top ten had it's own celebrity advocate who would try to persuade you to vote for their favourite. Ranging from Carol Vorderman to David Dickinson. So like a French Presidential run-off (but with few fascists), voters were asked to choose again from a smaller sample.
Rob and Guy discuss this poll, the accompanying show, and then after, run down their top 10 British sitcoms. Who (if at all) do you agree with? Get in touch and tell us!

25 Aug 2024 | Carry On Camping (1969) | 01:01:21
And so our Carry On journey comes to an end with Carry On Camping, arguably the most iconic offering of the entire franchise.
Hattie Jacques is back, which means our first; "Oooh Maaaatron". The rest of the regular cast is also in attendance for an innuendo-laden laugh fest. Expect Sid James staring at arses, Barbara Windsor's top flying off, and some good old-fashioned hippy bashing.
This is Guy's pick to round us off and although we've only managed a mere 3 of 31, Carry On BritCom Goes to the Movies has seen the perfect cross-section of the collection. Go out and watch some more, we'll see you in the autumn for series 3 of BritCom Goes to the Movies!

29 Nov 2023 | S01 E08 - Nuns on the Run (1990) | 01:44:41
Produced by an ex-Beatle, starring an ex-Python, written and directed by an ex-Yes Minister writer. What's not to like about Nuns on the Run? Guy and Rob look to answer that question in episode 8 of Britcom Goes to the Movies. As well as Nuns on the Run, we delve deeply into Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister and shallowly into the Swiss cheesy electro band Yello. There's plenty about Handmade films and what they did for the British movie industry. Now we get close to the end of the series, the battle for quiz scores is hotting up, with very little to separate the two hosts. This one gets a bit shouty! 08 Nov 2023 | S01 E05 - The Parole Officer (2001) | 01:49:38
Episode 5 of Britcom Goes to the Movies. Rob and Guy are on a Busman's Holiday (not On the Buses yet thank God) as they research the writing team of Steve Coogan and Henry Normal. A chance to fanboy the shit out of things as this episode is on 2001's The Parole Officer. Although memories of the movie aren't completely favorable, both Rob and Guy are huge Coogan and Normal fans. The Parole Officer's genesis seems to lie in Coogan's Run and Paul and Pauline Calf, so expect some deep dives into those shows. The Parole Officer was Coogan's first feature-length writing credit and featured breakthrough appearances from Lena Headey and Stephen Dillane, making episode 5 a must-listen for Game of Thrones completists. Is The Parole Officer capable of knocking Mike Bassett off the top spot of the Britcom goes to the Movies chart or will we think it's a bag of shite. Tune in to find out. 18 Oct 2023 | S01 E02 - Staggered (1994) | 01:37:02
Episode 2: Getting in the Swing. The only way is up (we hope) after Lesbian Vampire Killers. Next on our agenda was to take a closer look at the Martin Clunes 1994 vehicle Staggered. A film that at the time seemed ubiquitous because of an aggressive marketing campaign, but not one that’s widely remembered in 2023. In fact not even by Guy and Rob it would seem. Both huge Men Behaving Badly fans, one had seen Staggered but couldn’t remember it, while the other couldn’t remember if he had seen it. Keeping up? It’s fair to say that Staggered wouldn’t have received the exposure it did at the time without the burgeoning TV stardom of Martin Clunes on Men Behaving Badly and after losing the services on Comic Strip Presents director Sandy Johnson, Clunes was given the task of directing Staggered himself. Tune in to find out whether that was a good idea or not. Amongst other things, we get stuck into Men Behaving Badly, Robin of Sherwood, Babes in the Wood, Boobs in the Wood and the unforgettable Warren. See where Staggered rates in our master list of two and who can gain the upper hand (sadly a sitcom that never made the big screen) in the BritCom Goes to the Movies Quiz. 30 Apr 2024 | S02 E03 - All My Friends Hate Me (2021) | 01:38:59
Episode three of series two sees us tackle our most recent film. The Covid-delayed darkly comic and borderline (if not out and out) psychological horror, All My Friends Hate Me by the Toms (Stourton and Palmer). Here’s a movie that tackles alienation, anxiety, and (like most good British comedies) the class system. Rob and Guy discuss all those topics, plus the university experience, the leg-up in the industry that is public schools, and of course Sandstorm by Darude. That’s not to mention our (kind of) source material, the cringe-core sitcom Siblings, starring Stourton and Charlotte Richie. The quiz scores are starting to take shape as well. Can Rob claw back his two-point deficit, or will Guy pull even further ahead?
