22 Apr 2025S04 E04 - Clockwise (w/ Don't You Want Me?)01:28:47
As we near the midway point of series four, it's time to really step up our punctuality with a good time keeper's worst nightmare. Yes, Rob and Guy have taken a trip to 1986 for the Michael Frayn farce Clockwise. We've enlisted the help of co-hosts of the wonderful, Don't You Want Me podcast: Catrin Lowe and Rich Nelson to not only run the rule over Clockwise, but arguably Britain's best-loved sitcom Fawlty Towers. We'll hear how a Fawlty film was close to production (something that would have suited this podcast down to ground) but never came to pass. We'll also hear some inside insight into the making of the iconic comedy series from someone very close to the cast. But Clockwise notwithstanding, could Frayn's knack for making Swiss watch stage farces translate to the big screen, with one of Britain's brightest comedy stars front and centre? Join all four of us to find out. 04 Dec 2024S03 E09 - Polite Society (2023)01:28:15
We are back with a roundhouse kick to the face. Episode 9 is all about the work of 2020s writing/directing sensation Nida Manzoor. First came the semi-biographical, musical sitcom We Are Ladyparts, about the trials and tribulations of a young, female, Muslim punk band trying to gain a following, which was multi-award-winning, gaining acclaim on both sides of the pond, and then came the feature-length debut.   Polite Society is our most recent film to date. From 2023, it tells the tale of sisterly love, high school angst, and sinister goings-on, all punctuated with some of the best fight sequences we’re certainly ever likely to find on our list. Can’t imagine Reg Varney packing a punch in anywhere near the same way.   A new writer/director and an almost completely unknown cast make for plenty of incredible moments in this film, but just how funny is it? Find out by giving episode 9 a listen as Rob and Guy talk all things Nida Manzoor, We Are Ladyparts, and Polite Society.    We Are Lady Parts – Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPqzoAjxvl4   We Are Lady Parts – Amina’s Search For A Husband https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YleAvIsafFs   We Are Lady Parts – Bashir With the Good Beard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzAGqmdOBzE   We Are Lady Parts – Malala Made Me Do It https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3TclipIlm0   Polite Society – Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRFM7HQmkH0   Polite Society – I Am the Fury https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgzOzkkI68c   Polite Society – Khan vs Khan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCQHIIdoh28 Learn more about your ad choices. 21 Mar 2025Special: Top Five Comic Relief Moments01:05:13
It’s Red Nose Day! The 40th anniversary of Comic Relief, no less, so Rob and Guy took time from their busy schedule prepping series 4 of Britcom Goes to the Movies to release a Red Nose Day special in which they run down their top five Comic Relief comedy moments. There have been so many great sketches and live comedy moments over the course of the last 40 years since Richard Curtis and Lenny Henry set up the charity. Who can forget Dawn French snogging Hugh Grant, Billy Connolly dancing around Trafalgar Square in the buff, and of course, Hale and Pace putting a red nose on their conks and performing The Stonk? Unfortunately, none of those moments made our top five, but you can find out what did by listening to the show! 16 Oct 2024S03 E02 - Splitting Heirs (1993)01:38:55
We all remember what Rob and Guy thought of Nuns on the Run. Perhaps their biggest disappointment so far on Britcom Goes to the Movies. So another Eric Idle vehicle with another questionable love interest age gap was enough to set alarm bells ringing. Could John Cleese and Rick Moranis help stem the flow of ill will, though?   One significant advantage of tackling 1993's Splitting Heirs was the opportunity to examine Rutland Weekend Television. Idle’s post-Python sketch show, with more than a little help from musical maestro Neil Innes and pioneering an idea as maverick as a “music video” (it’ll never catch on), has become a big comedy touchstone for many generations to follow, and let’s not forget, gave the world The Rutles.   As well as Splitting Heirs and Rutland Weekend Television, we chat Saturday Night Live, SCTV, and plenty more. Guy with some work to do in the quiz stakes already after a 4-2 loss in episode one. 08 Apr 2025S04 E02 - Mindhorn (w/ Ricardo Autobahn)01:37:31
For episode two, we fast-forward two decades to 2017 and Mindhorn. Written by and starring Julian Barrett and frequent collaborator Simon Farnaby. If you're a fan of Bergerac, you'll love Mindhorn, the 80s sci-fi cop who can see the truth. Someone who is a big fan of this film is musician, producer, and podcaster Ricardo Autobahn, AKA John Matthews, who joined us to discuss his love for the Isle-of-Man-com. As well as Mindhorn, we chatted at length about 00s cult sitcom Nathan Barley, which, of course, starred Julian Barrett and was ahead of its time, to say the very least. So strap in for Geek Pies, Sugar Apes, and Trashbats, as well as Windjammers, Moonshafts, and Nutmegs. It's time for Mindhorn! 27 Nov 2024S03 E08 - Ali G Indahouse (2002)01:39:33
Booyakasha! It didn’t seem that long ago that you couldn’t walk 10 metres without someone doing an Ali G impression in your face, but it’s over a quarter of a century since this cultural phenomenon of a character first graced our late-night Channel 4 screens as part of the anarchic topical comedy the 11 O’ Clock Show. Originally a tool to poke the pomposity of politicians, religious figures, and artists, the boy from Staines became so much more, having his own spin-off shows, appearing in a Madonna music video, and eventually his own film in 2002.   In this episode, Guy and Rob talk all things Ali G and Sacha Baron Cohen, whilst being ever so careful to leave Borat and Bruno for a later date. Plus a mini dive into the 11 O'Clock Show and all the comedy talent that particularly divisive programme gave the world.   This may well also end up being the most represented film in our Spotify playlist, as the amount of Hip-Hop had Rob unable to contain his excitement, as did the line delivery of Charles Dance, but what was the overall impression of this film that left both our hosts relatively cold the first time around? 15 Apr 2025S04 E03 - Swede Caroline01:31:31
As we hit episode three of the series, Rob and Guy tackle their most recent film to date, 2024’s Swede Caroline. Starring mainstay of British film and television Jo Hartley, and supported by a talented array of comedians, thesps, and character actors. The film looks at the world of competitive giant vegetable-growing and what happens when proceedings are rocked by scandal.  We also take a look at forgotten sitcom Bliss starring Stephen Mangan, Hartley, and Heather Graham. The show was created by American comedian David Cross and followed the trials and tribulations of a man trying to balance life with two families in the same city.   Not adverse to controversial comedies, will Bliss leave us wanting more or wishing we’d not bothered in the first place? 18 Dec 2024S03 E11 - Get Santa *Christmas Special* (w/ Rob Gilroy)01:36:05
Merry Christmas from everyone at BritCom Goes to the Movies. Our present to you is the finale of series three. Comedian and internet sensation Rob Gilroy joins Guy and Rob to discuss the criminally lesser-known Get Santa. Jim Broadbent and Rafe Spall star in the first family comedy on our list, directed by Chris Smith, more known for his horror prowess and exec produced by Ridley Scott, no less! There's a lot of Rafe Spall chat, kicked off with our profiling of another undervalued comedy, Pete Vs Life. Which ran for two series in the early 2010s. 30 Oct 2024S03 E04 - Run Fatboy Run (2007)01:37:23
Rob and Guy Love Simon Pegg. That was clear for all to hear in our episode on Shaun of the Dead. After that movie he became hot property and Hollywood came calling. After a Mission Impossible and with Star Trek to come, Pegg’s showbiz mate David Schwimmer, star of arguably the biggest Ameri-Com Friends, was directing a British set, US written Rom-Com, and wanted Pegg as his leading man. Problem is, how do you make an alter-jilter layabout tosspot seem loveable? If anyone can do it...   Pegg is joined by an abundance of British comedy and acting talent. From Thandiwe Newton to Simon Day, some American muscle in the shape of Hank Azaria and once again joining forces with Dylan Moran to create a cast to die for... And that’s before we even get to cameos from Stephen Merchant, David Walliams and a host more.   However, how likely was a movie originally to be set in the US and written and directed by Americans to grasp that Britcom sensibility? Join Rob and Guy as they find out.    It’s not just Run Fatboy Run that we’ll be discussing in episode 4. The ground-breaking sketch show, which gave Pegg an early break, will also go under the microscope as iconic sketches such as The Staring Contest, Smug Man Who Can’t Open Doors, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince preying upon Jockeys in the wild and a host more. 13 Nov 2024S03 E06 - Monty Python & The Holy Grail (w/ Jeremy Dyson)01:47:06
Over halfway through our third series, and it’s time to tackle a behemoth! Monty Python’s Flying Circus has been a comedy touchstone for pretty much every comedian and comedy writer to come after, including our guest for this episode.   Jeremy Dyson is one quarter of The League of Gentlemen and has written for countless other comedy shows as well as writing and directing for the big screen. In fact, in The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse, he made his very own TV sitcom to cinema spin-off, so Rob and Guy couldn’t be joined by anyone more appropriate for some expert insight.   As a huge fan of the Python’s, Jeremy joined to talk about his favourite of their movies; The Holy Grail, as well as Monty Python’s Flying Circus and how it has informed and influenced his work.    Where do we start with such a critical and fan favourite? Endlessly quoted, constantly in the upper echelons of all-time movie lists, and helmed by a director who would go on to be considered one of the best to ever make films. This is a film that would be challenging for the top spot, but where will it end up? 23 Aug 2024Carry On Abroad (w/ Andy Clarke)01:29:07
While we wait for series three in the autumn, here's a bank holiday treat of a mini-series. What better way to spend a bank holiday weekend than with British comedy institution Carry On?   Over the next three days, Rob and Guy scratch the surface of the comedy behemoth, choosing one film from the massive back catalogue each.   We start our series of three with a choice from our guest. TV's Andy Clarke. Writer, presenter and Carry On fanatic. Who better to make our first pick and provide some expert analysis? (particularly for Guy, who'd inexplicably never before seen a Carry On)   Andy kicks us off with Carry On Abroad. Widely regarded by fans and critics as the last good Carry On Film and certainly the final one with the bulk of the core cast. James, Williams, Connor, Windsor, Whitfield, Sims and Hawtry make their way to the beautiful resort of El's Bells in "the Med". 14 May 2024S02 E05 - Kevin & Perry Go Large (w/ Ben Clark)01:47:26
As the Venga Boys once said, "We're going to Ibiza"... unfortunately the BritCom goes to the Movies budget didn't stretch as far as actually going to the Balearics, but via the magic of podcasting, we can transport you there by discussing Kevin and Perry Go Large.   Ben Clark joins Guy and Rob for this episode. The writer, director, and comedian is also one-third of Pappys and had, up until this moment, never seen the movie. Luckily he's still talking to us!   We talk about the origins of Kevin the teenager from Kevin the annoying little brother in Harry Enfield's Television Programme to Superstar DJ with sidekick Perry, played by the inimitable Kathy Burke. Kevin became the benchmark by which all millennial teenage boys were (rightly or wrongly) compared.   But as big a cultural phenomenon as Kevin and Perry were (along with many other of Enfield and Burke's characters) how did that translate to the big screen? How kind has the last quarter of a century been to the movie and of course, its memorable soundtrack packed with dance anthems. 20 Dec 2023S01 E11 - Love Actually *Christmas Special* (w/ Monica Sagar)01:57:02
The main series may be over, but we’ve one more festive treat. Guy and Rob joined by actor Monica Sagar to discuss the divisive Christmas classic on its 20th birthday, Love Actually. We also get stuck into the Vicar of Dibley Christmas special, which is perhaps the most tonally similar to Love Actually of all of Richard Curtis’ TV work. A movie that’s been reappraised by both its cheerleaders and detractors over the course of the past two decades, Love Actually has also caused Richard Curtis himself to address things he would rather have changed with his time again. With a multitude of plots, some classic rom-com, some a bit more esoteric, and some just downright weird and difficult to defend, our panel try their best to revisit with an open mind to see where it will place in the final league rankings of series one of Britcom Goes to the Movies. We will also crown the series one winner of the Britcom Goes to the Movies quiz. After episode 10, Guy led for the first time in the series, but who would come out on top? 25 Oct 2023S01 E03 - Man About The House (1974)01:43:25
Episode 3 of Britcom Goes to the Movies sees Guy and Rob tackle their first direct TV Sitcom Spin-off. Man About the House from 1974 was one of a glut of Hammer produced big screen versions of beloved TV sitcoms and the show, which debuted in 1973 spawned not only this film, but two other spin-off series, a US remake, and two US spin-offs. You could say it’s a bit of a big hitter.   However, the 1970s sensibilities and style of humour filled at least one of us with dread. Find out if those concerns were warranted as we dissect a 70s crowd pleaser which may or may not have aged well.   As well as Man About the House, we discuss Hammer Pictures, Love Thy Neighbour, Three’s Company, and much more. Our ongoing quiz continues to remain a close-run thing and our ranking list is beginning to take shape.   You can follow Britcom Goes To The Movies on Twitter and Instagram as @britcomgoes you can email us at britcomgoes@gmail.com and don’t forget to like, subscribe and give us a lovely review wherever you get your podcasts to help us reach a wider audience.   Man About the House Sitcom Opening Titles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQRgBYsmAMQ   Man About the House Movie Opening Titles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUTUARfmOj8   Man About the House (1974) Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icBwYDvHFy0 Three’s Company Opening Titles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rS7in7OdWQ Learn more about your ad choices. 13 Dec 2023S01 E10 - The Rebel (1961)01:42:16
We've reached the magical tenth installment and what better way to round off the regular series than by following our newest film so far, with our oldest. The Rebel from 1961 is the earliest example we've found yet of transporting a character (Tony Hancock) out of his usual environment of 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam into new foreign and exotic climes. A blueprint for many, many BritCom adaptations to come. As Guy and Rob discuss, this is not the only thing for which Hancock, Ray Galton, and Alan Simpson set the blueprint. 16 Apr 2024S02 E01 - Porridge (1979)01:36:00
We're back for our difficult second series. Guy and Rob carefully curated a list of films that span eight decades and showcase all manner of British comedy....or we just picked some random films from the long list. I forget now. Series two begins with a classic sitcom spin-off. The seventh favourite British sitcom of all time (as recorded in 2004 in a BBC light entertainment list show, so legally binding) the Ronnie Barker vehicle Porridge! Lots to get through for our intrepid hosts, including pondering the likely career trajectory of Richard Beckinsale (had he not been taken from us so early), the likelihood of being able to stand a 12 month stretch of Norman Stanley Fletcher's wise cracks without lamping him and the continued quest to ascertain exactly what makes the comedy transfer from small to big screen, such a difficult process. Our master league table continues from series one, but the quiz scores are reset with Rob having narrowly taken victory in series one. So nerks and nerkettes, enjoy Porridge! 18 Jun 2024S02 E10 - Churchill: The Hollywood Years (2004)01:36:33
It feels like only yesterday we were getting stuck into some Porridge and now Series 2 of BritCom Goes to the Movies, draws to a close with 2004’s Churchill: The Hollywood Years. A movie that was met with a lukewarm critical reception and a limited release, leaving it with a somewhat tarnished at worst, and forgettable at best legacy.   ...but is any of that fair? Both Rob and Guy remembered loving it. The film had the cream of TV comedy talent of the time and all masterminded by Mr. Comic Strip Presents Peter Richardson, with a blueprint similar to one of his best episodes, The Strike. Is it really as bad as all that? There’s a deep dive into The Comic Strip from its early days as a cabaret show, to a mockumentary directed by Julian Temple, to the opening night of Channel 4. This show gave the world Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, French and Saunders, Robbie Coltraine, Keith Allen, Alexi Sayle, Phil Cornwell...the list goes on! There’s the small matter of crowning the series quiz champion, with Rob needing an absolute miracle to defend his title. What a series it’s been, with two new number ones, could we have a third? 23 Apr 2024S02 E02 - Sightseers (w/ Jessica Regan)01:47:38
Episode 2 of Series 2 sees another crossover with the Best Pick Podcast as another of its hosts Jessica Regan (our second guest after Tom Salinsky) joins to talk about the 2012 darkest of dark comedies Sightseers. Jess provided unparalleled insight into director Ben Wheatley’s process, starring as she did in his 2009 sketch show The Wrong Door. We take a closer look at The Wrong Door, a show in which dinosaurs are dates, Pirates hijack commuter trains and Matt Berry puts John Virgo’s trick shots in the shade, as well as a deep dive into Wheatley’s third feature-length film, which became the first big screen starring roles for comedy collaborators Steve Oram and Alice Lowe. It helped to have a voice of Irish sanity to help assess a movie that so precisely captures a slice of English eccentricity, repressed anger and downright insanity! We also take a look at the use of double, double pop covers for needle drops and a supporting cast of some of the British movie industry’s very best bit players. How would Guy and Rob get on with Jess’ questions on the Oram and Lowe and could we have a new contender for the top spot? Find out in episode two. 15 Nov 2023S01 E06 - The Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer (w/ Tom Salinsky)01:50:35
Episode six of Britcom Goes to the Movies marks the halfway point of the series and this week we’re going all the back to 1970. Having said that the themes and satire from The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer are all too prescient in 2023. Guy and Rob are joined to talk all things Peter Cook, David Frost and of course The Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer by writer, producer and host of the Best Pick Podcast Tom Salinsky. Tom’s insights and political context for this episode were invaluable and he also wrote and hosted our quiz. Among other things, we talk about That Was The Week That Was, Goodbye Again, Frost/Nixon, and a sprinkling of Monty Python. We wouldn’t always urge listeners to watch the film we’re talking about (Lesbian Vampire Killers we’re looking at you) but The Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer is worth everyone’s time, if not for anything other than Arthur Lowe. Could this biting satire challenge the top of our table, tune in and find out. 11 Oct 2023S01 E01 Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009)01:35:54
Series one episode one of Britcom Goes to the Movies. After a low-brow discussion in a high-end Leeds boozer, Guy Walker and Rob Heath decided to set on a quest to definitively rank as many British comedy small to big/screen transfers as they could before they or more importantly their audience got bored of it. Building the long list of movies that contained some kind of programme, sketch, or talent crossover was the fun bit, then the real work began.   It was decided that Britcom Goes to the Movies would kick off with the 2009 cinematic outing of the Horne & Corden partnership, Lesbian Vampire Killers. This was a film that had become a byword for terrible TV comedy transfers, which is why neither of our presenters had ever seen it. Was this Hammer Horror-inflected comedy really as bad as everyone said? There was only one way to find out.   Charting LVK’s origins all the way from the universally loved Gavin & Stacy to the unanimously slated late-noughties sketch show Horne & Corden, this is a deep dive into all things Lesbian Vampire Killers. As a quirk of format at the end of this episode this film would sit both top and bottom of the BGTTM rankings list, but how long would it stay at either end?   You can follow Britcom Goes To The Movies on Twitter and Instagram as @britcomgoes you can email us at britcomgoes@gmail.com and don’t forget to like, subscribe and give us a lovely review wherever you get your podcasts to help us reach a wider audience.   James Corden’s early TV comedy appearance in Boyz Unlimited https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z52BM_RXa-I   Lesbian Vampire Killers trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug60BEOdrB4   Viz Comic’s “Which McGann Brother are you? https://twitter.com/PaulBurleyHQ/status/583366696766967808?t=KfzOgNHagjBQG3Pp1nssLA&s=08   I like You So Much Better When You’re Naked by Ida Maria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkVy2FeqIyc    Shout by James Corden and Dizzy Rascal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHq3vy_7cJQ Learn more about your ad choices. 06 Dec 2023S01 E09 - People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan (w/ Daisy Edwards)01:43:11
Hold tight man like Guy and Rob as Britcom Crew are joined by galdem Daisy Edwards from the W-Rated Possee. That’s right, episode nine is all about People Just Do Nothing and it’s movie spin-off Big in Japan. It was great to have Daisy (a self confessed PJDN fan) to talk about a film she knew she liked as opposed to some of the dross she usually gets served in her W-Rated podcast.   There’s plenty of UK garage chat as Guy looks on in bewilderment with Rob and Daisy chatting about their all-time favourite garage tracks. At Britcom Goes to the Movies we’ve had a mixed bag of direct sitcom spin-offs. Could People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan, tickle our funny bones as much as or more than the Inbetweeners Movie, or will it be a straight-up Man About The House style disappointment? There is no let-off this bank holiday as we hit you with another Carry On straight away. This time it's Rob's pick. Critic and hipster's choice, Carry On Screaming. It's a Hammer Horror Homage but without the scariest cast member Sid James, replaced to great effect by Harry H Corbett. There's low budget scares, laughs, and uncredited session musician's theme tunes galore. 12 Jun 2024S02 E09 - The Mouse That Roared (w/ Tyler Adams)01:38:26
Our second Goon-related podcast of the series, so who better to join Rob and Guy to talk about all things Peter Sellers, A Show Called Fred, and The Mouse That Roared, than host of The Goon Pod, Tyler Adams? There was expert insight galore as BritCom Goes to the Movies tackled its earliest film yet.   An early high-concept outing for Sellers’ many faces and voices on the big screen as he channeled his inner Alec Guinness to play three of the main characters in this Anglo-American cult classic (not the first one of those we’ve profiled in this series either).   There are many unexpected mentions of The Simpsons, Alan Partridge and The Fast Show, proving just how long a shadow Peter Sellers has cast on the comedy world for decades.   Guy had a huge lead over Rob in the quiz coming into this episode, with only one more to go, Rob would need to buck up his ideas…and quickly!   A Show Called Fred – 1956 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbWbz1Z0q3M   The Mouse That Roared – Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7L7WLFBYR4   The Mouse That Roared – Full Movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfD_LTad1hE   Coldland - Shooting Stars  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgYgXl5AxQA   Passport To Pimlico - Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=634VTm9y1Eo   Theatre of Blood - Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S94e43JIgHc   Holmes & Yo-Yo - Opening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeJd7j-Rhtg Learn more about your ad choices. 21 May 2024S02 E06 - The Bed Sitting Room (1969)01:42:03
Over halfway through series two of Britcom Goes to the Movies we’re back to the 1960s....and the 50s as we look at Spike Milliagn, the Goon Show, and the Post-Apocalyptic surreal comedy The Bed Sitting Room. This is the first of our episodes in which we look at a radio show as our source material (if you don’t include Hancock’s Half Hour for The Rebel in series one).   This film contains two of the three (or is it four) Goons as well as a plethora of British comedy talent of the time. Many of whom we’ve seen appear in previous episodes, including Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Frank Thornton, and of course Arthur Lowe, who is the Britcom Goes to the Movies record appearance maker so far. In a series and a half, Rob and Guy have been fairly united on their approval or disapproval of a film, but this time there is some serious disagreement. What will this mean for the rankings and could the non-believer yet be brought round to reform his opinion? All the while, the quiz scores are delicately poised with Rob having a one-point lead. 01 Nov 2023S01 E04 - Mike Bassett: England Manager (w/ Steve Dunne)01:51:47
Episode four already?! Guy and Rob are building up a head of steam and are joined for the first time by a guest. TV Writer Steve Dunne chips in with his thoughts on the 2001 football fan favourite Mike Bassett: England Manager.   Ricky Tomlinson, at the height of his Jim Royle fame, starred as the ever-optimistic lower league football manager turned England’s savior at a time when the real England team was looking to the continent in Sven Goran Eriksson and playing some of the most memorable matches in the last 30 years. As we’ll hear, there were moments when art and life intertwined.   We delve deep into not only Mike Bassett but also the Royle Family and the film’s major inspiration, the groundbreaking documentary, The Impossible Job. 04 Jun 2024S02 E08 - Steptoe & Son (1972)01:38:27
With Old Ned still ringing in their ears, Rob and Guy sat down to record episode 8: Steptoe and Son. An enduring sitcom with a huge legacy, written by a couple of comedy pioneers…but let’s not forget this is a movie spin-off from the 70s, by which all low bars apparently, should be judged.   Surely that can’t be the case for a pair of characters still held in such high esteem even now, situations as timeless as the day is long and a budget to be envious of….well, let’s not give anything away. The classic traps of lack of TV network reigning in are a jaunt abroad and a hurried script.   All this plus some chat about Mr Acker Bilk and his impressive record, a public toilet in Shepherd’s Bush, class warfare by sporting preference, and a chance for Rob to get back in the running for the series quiz title. 28 May 2024S02 E07 - Shaun of the Dead (w/ Ross Birks)01:42:58
Anger, Pain, Fear, Aggression….Watercolours and laughs! As we know from our special on Britain’s Best Sitcom, Spaced is in both Guy and Rob’s top 5, so neither could contain their excitement when it came to talking about Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and Edgar Wright’s seminal turn of the century pop-culture-reference-a-thon.   Skip to the end….but there’s more. Joining our very own Tim and Daisy was filmmaker Ross Birks, fresh from stealing a tank and trying to invade Paris, to lend his two penn’orth. We could have done a whole two hours on that, but of course, this is a movie podcast so what better than the film inspired by a short segment in an episode of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead?   The movie that spawned the genre Zom Rom Com was 20 years old at the time of recording and all three of our panelists made no secret of their love, quotability, and rewatchabilty of one of the most influential films of the 00s… despite itself making so many references to all three of the genres it drew from.   After a truly terrible showing in last week’s quiz, who would break the deadlock this week with Ross’ fiendishly difficult questions?   So let’s take the car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, listen to Britcom Goes To the Movies, and wait for all of this to blow over.   Simon Pegg and Jessica Stephenson in Six Pairs of Pants https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-ZkItmbFiQ   Edgar Wright directed Asylum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhzHQfSkg0w   Mash & Peas – John Littlerichard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaGF5z4hyzY   Spaced – One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFoU_GG38Tc   Spaced – Clubbing Scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_wVOA_95QU   Spaced – The Matrix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5kLk9gfK_w   Comic Relief Blankety Blank https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUC4un_G5AA   Big Train – Billie Piper fanclub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_3oU-Z4Vxo   Shaun of the Dead trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIfcaZ4pC-4   Shaun of the Dead record throwing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qHAOY7C1go   Shaun of the Dead – Prink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cJvDtF1ios   Edgar Wright’s Don’t https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czR4qJbkSuc Learn more about your ad choices. 07 May 2024S02 E04 - Drop Dead Fred (w/ Charlotte White)01:44:27
Four episodes deep into our difficult second series, and to make it a little easier, we’ve enlisted the help of an expert. It’s fair to say Rob and Guy had probably never really considered the impact of the world of Psychotherapy, early 90s favourite Drop Dead Fred had...but it did! In a big way and to help us get to grips with that we enlisted Psychotherapist Charlotte White to talk not only about the significance of imaginary friends but also the roles of women and girls in cinema and abusive relationships. Don’t worry, this is a comedy...or Is it? This film tests both aspects of the criteria of our podcast in that it is arguably neither British nor comedy! But how can you have British Cinema without Working Title and how can you say a film starring Rik Mayall is not a comedy? As our source material, we go back to the beginning of TV for Rik and talk about The Young Ones, a seminal piece of British comedy history. It changed the British Sitcom forever (while maintaining a laughter track) influencing the entire generation of comedians that came after it, not to mention its admiration across the pond, becoming the first non-musical show to be broadcast on MTV. But was it any good and has it held up over time? Find out what we think about The Young Ones and Drop Dead Fred in episode 4.   Our list continues to grow. We’ve already had a new number one in this series, could there be another? The quiz is hotting up this series, with Rob leveling the scores at 7-7 in episode three, with Charlotte writing the questions this time, who could take the lead after four episodes? A couple of Podcast fwends set out on episode seven of Britcom Goes to the Movies. Rob and Guy dissect their most recent film yet, the Inbetweeners Movie. This is the second of the series to be a direct sitcom to big screen transfer and one both our hosts were very familiar with. Whether you are a briefcase wanker, bus wanker or bumder…or all of the above, this is a must-listen episode for any fan of The Inbetweeners. Has the comedy of the series and film held up, or has it aged like milk? As well as The Inbetweeners, Rob and Guy discuss Look Around You, Everyone Else Burns, Fresh Meat, Derry Girls, and Drifters amongst others. Plus, as we get to the business end of the series quiz we’ll see if Rob can pull ahead even further or if Guy can bridge the deficit. 29 Feb 2024Special: Britain's Best Sitcom01:01:26
It's not quite time for the second series of Britcom Goes to the Movies yet, but in the meantime, we've prepared a top ten British sitcoms special. In 2004 Jonathan Ross hosted Britain's Best Sitcom on the BBC. Audiences were polled on their favourite British sitcom. A top 50 list was compiled, episode one rattled through numbers 50-11 at a dismissive pace and then audiences were polled once again on the top ten. This time, each sitcom from the top ten had it's own celebrity advocate who would try to persuade you to vote for their favourite. Ranging from Carol Vorderman to David Dickinson. So like a French Presidential run-off (but with few fascists), voters were asked to choose again from a smaller sample. Rob and Guy discuss this poll, the accompanying show, and then after, run down their top 10 British sitcoms. Who (if at all) do you agree with? Get in touch and tell us! And so our Carry On journey comes to an end with Carry On Camping, arguably the most iconic offering of the entire franchise.   Hattie Jacques is back, which means our first; "Oooh Maaaatron". The rest of the regular cast is also in attendance for an innuendo-laden laugh fest. Expect Sid James staring at arses, Barbara Windsor's top flying off, and some good old-fashioned hippy bashing.   This is Guy's pick to round us off and although we've only managed a mere 3 of 31, Carry On BritCom Goes to the Movies has seen the perfect cross-section of the collection. 29 Nov 2023S01 E08 - Nuns on the Run (1990)01:46:11
Produced by an ex-Beatle, starring an ex-Python, written and directed by an ex-Yes Minister writer. What's not to like about Nuns on the Run? Guy and Rob look to answer that question in episode 8 of Britcom Goes to the Movies. As well as Nuns on the Run, we delve deeply into Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister and shallowly into the Swiss cheesy electro band Yello. There's plenty about Handmade films and what they did for the British movie industry. Now we get close to the end of the series, the battle for quiz scores is hotting up, with very little to separate the two hosts. This one gets a bit shouty! Episode 5 of Britcom Goes to the Movies. Rob and Guy are on a Busman's Holiday (not On the Buses yet thank God) as they research the writing team of Steve Coogan and Henry Normal. A chance to fanboy the shit out of things as this episode is on 2001's The Parole Officer. Although memories of the movie aren't completely favorable, both Rob and Guy are huge Coogan and Normal fans. The Parole Officer's genesis seems to lie in Coogan's Run and Paul and Pauline Calf, so expect some deep dives into those shows. The Parole Officer was Coogan's first feature-length writing credit and featured breakthrough appearances from Lena Headey and Stephen Dillane, making episode 5 a must-listen for Game of Thrones completists. Is The Parole Officer capable of knocking Mike Bassett off the top spot of the Britcom goes to the Movies chart or will we think it's a bag of shite. Tune in to find out. 18 Oct 2023S01 E02 - Staggered (1994)01:38:32
Episode 2: Getting in the Swing. The only way is up (we hope) after Lesbian Vampire Killers. Next on our agenda was to take a closer look at the Martin Clunes 1994 vehicle Staggered. A film that at the time seemed ubiquitous because of an aggressive marketing campaign, but not one that’s widely remembered in 2023. In fact not even by Guy and Rob it would seem. Both huge Men Behaving Badly fans, one had seen Staggered but couldn’t remember it, while the other couldn’t remember if he had seen it. Keeping up? It’s fair to say that Staggered wouldn’t have received the exposure it did at the time without the burgeoning TV stardom of Martin Clunes on Men Behaving Badly and after losing the services on Comic Strip Presents director Sandy Johnson, Clunes was given the task of directing Staggered himself. Tune in to find out whether that was a good idea or not. Amongst other things, we get stuck into Men Behaving Badly, Robin of Sherwood, Babes in the Wood, Boobs in the Wood and the unforgettable Warren. See where Staggered rates in our master list of two and who can gain the upper hand (sadly a sitcom that never made the big screen) in the BritCom Goes to the Movies Quiz. 30 Apr 2024S02 E03 - All My Friends Hate Me (2021)01:40:29
Episode three of series two sees us tackle our most recent film. The Covid-delayed darkly comic and borderline (if not out and out) psychological horror, All My Friends Hate Me by the Toms (Stourton and Palmer). Here’s a movie that tackles alienation, anxiety, and (like most good British comedies) the class system.   Rob and Guy discuss all those topics, plus the university experience, the leg-up in the industry that is public schools, and of course Sandstorm by Darude. That’s not to mention our (kind of) source material, the cringe-core sitcom Siblings, starring Stourton and Charlotte Richie.   The quiz scores are starting to take shape as well. Can Rob claw back his two-point deficit, or will Guy pull even further ahead?   Siblings Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4hW0OAD0ps   Totally Tom - People’s Houses  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG3jvfd_ZDQ   High Renaissance Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJY73GgkvWg   Cardinal Burns Episode 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7caUGv6yY8k   All My Friends Hate Me - Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcLusCip1Gs   All my friends hate me - Norman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Odbe6AcFHKc Learn more about your ad choices. 01 Apr 2025S04 E01 - Bean (w/ Bill Oakley)01:08:16
It’s series 4 and we are back with a transatlantic bang. Joining Rob and Guy to kick us off is a legend of comedy writing. Bill Oakley was writer and showrunner on The Simpsons throughout the golden period and has gone on to create more such greats as Mission Hill and Space 1969. But Bill, like a lot of American comedy writers, is also a huge fan of British comedy. From the early days of Python and Benny Hill, through Blackadder and surprisingly perhaps an avid watcher of Gogglebox! But when we sent him our list, Bill was immediately drawn to another of his favourites, Mr Bean, which of course has fans all around the world, but despite going to see the 1997 spin-off Bean at the cinema, had no recollection. So, we are on hand to provide that. As we’ve seen in past episodes, a straight small to big screen transformation can be a difficult thing to achieve, but perhaps even more so with this character, famed for his lack of speech. But as with a lot of big screen outings for Britcom characters, 1997’s Bean takes Rowan Atkinson’s character abroad, this time to sunny Los Angeles, where we all hoped hilarity would ensue…but would it? Well, you’ll have to tune it to find out! 11 Dec 2024S03 E10 - The Inbetweeners 2 (w/ Gabi Thorogood)01:41:52
Uncharted territory for Rob and Guy as they tackle their first sequel. There's also uncharted territory for The Inbetweeners in their second movie installment, as the boys head down under and encounter Peter Andre-Mobiles, slip-sliding turds, and sensitive rape alarms. Sounds a bit much, but is it? To discuss, the chaps are joined by content creator Gabi Thorogood, herself a massive Inbetweeners fan. Between them, our trio will navigate series 3 of the Channel 4 TV show, the infamous US remake, and of course, the 2014 feature-length movie. By 2014, was Inbetweeners fatigue a thing? If so, is it indeed still a thing ten years later? Of course there's the age-old question of how a sequel holds up against the first film. 08 Oct 2024S03 E01 - On The Buses (w/ John Rain)01:38:22
Britcom Goes to the Movies is back! We begin our third, yes, THIRD series with an absolute classic of the genre... of sorts. On The Buses was one of the most popular British sitcoms ever made, so midway through its run, Hammer decided to take it to the big screen, the first of many such ventures for the studio, and it paid off, literally! With box office numbers, a Marvel movie would kill for in 1971.   But On The Buses the Movie has become a byword for terrible sitcom to movie spin-offs, by which all subsequent examples would be judged. You could say we have this movie to blame for the short shrift and general disdain a lot of British comedies get critically. Without this film, we’d probably have no podcast.    It’s reputation therefore preceded it, and Rob and Guy were in no hurry to cover it, but once writer, funnyman, host of SMERSH Pod, and all-round On The Buses apologist John Rain expressed an interest in joining us to discuss the film, how could we say no?   So join Guy, Rob, and John on an odyssey of crass jokes, old men playing 30-year-old lotharios, the world’s first ATM, pencil-moustached knicker-snatchers, and rolling left to right pecking. Finally, it’s time for On The Buses.   On the Buses – First Colour Episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFV3aAMPTgg&list=PLgD5-qNnzSa5nAynMx58UWJsetOvWgyfk&index=2   On The Buses – The Cistern https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1ghggVZOs4   On The Buses – Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRmkh8tMB9k   On The Buses – Skid Test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvV8jjvI42o   On The Buses cast on Wogan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2fVCJ0_0HE   Reg Varney uses world’s first ATM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9mwgKMrZ1U Learn more about your ad choices. 22 Oct 2024S03 E03 - Bedazzled (w/ John Dorney)01:38:38
You may remember that Rob and Guy covered Peter Cook in quite some detail in our episode on the Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer with our guest, Tom Salinsky of Best Pick Pod. Well, now we are talking about Cook & Moore as a duo, focusing mainly on Not Only But Also and, of course, our film for this week, Bedazzled. Rather neatly, another host of Best Pick joins us for the 1967 Faustian adaptation. John Dorney gets involved with our Pete & Dud-centric episode. Bedazzled, also starring Eleanor Bron, Raquel Welch, and Barry Humphries, is the first film we have covered on Britcom Goes to the Movies, which has a Hollywood remake. Much as the idea of a Tom Cruise-starring remake of On The Buses would excite us, it simply doesn’t exist! To Rob and Guy’s shame, they didn’t watch the remake, but luckily our guest did and was more than happy to fill us in on that as well.  Tom Salinksy and Jess Regan (the other two presenters of Best Pick) had chosen movies that shot straight to number one on our League table (although neither Michael Rimmer nor Sightseers stayed there), so could John continue this trend? Could Guy eat into Rob’s quiz lead with John’s questions on Cook & Moore? Find out by listening to episode 3! 20 Nov 2024S03 E07 - In The Loop (w/ Mollie Goodfellow)01:40:14
How do you follow a massive film with a fantastic and well-informed guest? Do another one straight away! This week we are joined by the brilliant TV writer, journalist, podcaster, and comedian Mollie Goodfellow to talk about one of the greatest sitcoms of the 21st century, The Thick of It, and the film it spawned, In The Loop. Make sure young ears are out of shot because this is a sweary one… and that’s just Rob and Guy’s thoughts on Alistair Campbell! We look at Armando Iannucci’s magnum opus as the man behind so many enduring TV comedy classics of the 90s. With inspiration from endorsing Yes Minister on Britain’s Best Sitcom in 2004, he took on the political establishment, turning it into his big-screen directorial debut and subsequently hit HBO political comedy Veep. Not since Michael Rimmer have we tackled satire. We ask if there is any weight to the claim that you can’t make this kind of comedy anymore because of the state of politics today and whether New Labour 2.0 would even allow itself to be sent up in the same way it was in its original iteration’s death knell in the late 00s.  We hope it’s not too much of an omnishambles as Britcom Goes to the Movies presents In The Loop!   The Thick of It – Insults https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njcuww9Einc   The Thick of It – Tim in Ruislip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xcVov-UL4Q    The Thick of It – Nicknames  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJMNHu9YM-4    The Thick of It – Blinky Ben Swain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALNjevGdB5g   In the Loop – The Culture Show with Alistair Campbell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcFaizGw860    In The Loop – Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJU2qRg5zLI    In The Loop – Jamie  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jr731Mhxkg   In the Loop – Don’t Call Me English https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySD0u4RXXcI Get NordVPN 2Y plan + 4 months extra here ➼ https://nordvpn.com/fspn It’s risk-free with Nord’s 30-day money-back guarantee! - Learn more about your ad choices. 06 Nov 2024S03 E05 - Up 'n' Under (1998)01:39:19
Could episode 5 be where you find your heaven? Well, if you get that musical reference, then perhaps so. Guy and Rob are going all in on the 90s nostalgia. A Samantha Janus odyssey covering Game On, with its groundbreaking attitudes, jarring cast changes, and "skunk pussies," followed by Up 'n' Under, the John Godber play turned 90s BritCom. Hot off the heels of the Full Monty, this Yorkshire set (but not filmed) Rugby League comedy took advantage of the cream of TV comedy acting at the time. Not just the aforementioned Janus, but 2.4 Children's Gary Olsen, Men Behaving Badly's Neil Morrissey, not to mention John Thompson, Griff Rhys Jones, and a whole load more. Join us for our first play adaptation and stay for the quiz, where Guy would have to do some serious winning to cancel out last week's thrashing.
