27 Dec 2022 | Re-release of Ep. 2 - Richard Bourbon | 00:59:43
Hi neighbors! Nox here. As we're winding down, I decided to reach back in the vaults and re-release our 2nd episode recorded January 20th, 2019. I took this episode out because there was just a huge jump downwards in downloads from our first episode to our second, and I knew it was because it was a little sloppy, and the audio wasn't great at all. I didn't know how to properly sound-proof the studio, and Matty was learning which plug-ins to use to make us sound better. We had cheap condenser mics that picked up every noise around us as possible, and I still had concrete floors and walls down there. I did a little post on this episode so it should sound quite a lot better than when it was originally released. Enjoy! Who's on this episode: - Nox - Big Ern - EZ Chris - Andrea A - Travis G - on the knobs and sliders: Matty B - and introducing Izzy the dog Which bourbons: 1) Four Roses Single Barrel 2) 1792 Bottled in Bond 3) Bulleit Frontier Whiskey FAQ's answered for our listeners: - What is bourbon? - What does Single Barrel mean? - What is Small Batch? - What do they do with the one-use barrels when distilleries are done with them? 01 Dec 2020 | Ep. 106 - Barrel Aged Brews part 3 of 3 - LAST CALL edition | 00:59:56
We finally made it to the last installment of the series on barrel aged brews! We've previously asked brewers from two local breweries (Junkyard Brewing and Drekker Brewing) 10 questions we thought our audience might want to know about what barrel aging a beer is all about. In this LAST CALL edition, we stick with the traditional LC formula and get a little tipsy with Mick Klein and cousin Torry while asking the brewers off the wall hits such as "How do you get such a high ABV% if it doesn't come from the barrel", and "What's a yeast cake", to "How does barrel temp affect the beer", and "what future barrel projects do you have coming"? We sample and review Great Divide Brewing's Wood Werks Barrel Series #3 brown rye ale, Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck's 2013 Trignac XII, and 3 Floyds Brewing's Pillar of Beasts barrel aged salted caramel barleywine. Some hefty bois to round out the trifecta, and we hope you enjoy! For more information on our guest Mick Klein and his music, head over to - https://mickklein.com/ and show him some love! 09 Feb 2021 | Ep. 116 - Sour Beers part 2 | 02:15:47
Sour beers are a divisive group of brews. You got your old school took-a-long-time-to-master sours like lambics n such, and you have the new school pack-as-much-fruit-as-possible-until-you-cant-taste-beer sours. Here, we finish the discussion about what sour beers are, the different kinds of sours, and how they're made. We invite Don back as a guest host, and our special guest, one-half of Beware The Vine (our theme song writers), Aimee Klein is here to hang out and possibly sing us some telegrams? In this episode we sample and review Stacked Deck Brewing's Astronaut Sauce with mango, guava, and pineapple, Oliphant Brewing's Squall Me Squishmael banana and almond sour, Junkyard Brewing's Nuance Strikes Back pink pepper and lemon zest saison sour and Muir Dry Hopped Foudre Sour along with their Bohemian Flex guava peach and tangerine gose, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and the ever present Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe. Listen at the end of this episode for the full version of Sex, Drugs, and Cabaret by Beware The Vine. 29 Apr 2020 | Ep. 73 - Nox's Notables 3 - All the Burps (Or Draining the Swamp-fridge) | 01:58:16
This is the last episode we recorded in the dungeon just before the real serious quarantine hit us here in the MidWest, so there might be some outdated information spoken in this one. We busted out all the disinfectant and lysol wipes we could find, cleaned everything, and stayed at least 6' apart, but we still got to have some fun, and drug ourselves through 13 different beers to boot. Nox needed to clean out his beer fridge, so we took what he had collected the last couple of months, and threw down! In this episode, we review All My Ghosts by Long Live Beerworks, Dragon Fandango by Toppling Goliath, 180 Schilling and Barrel Aged Mountain Standard Double Black IPA from O'Dell Brewing, Thirst Encounters of the Third Kind by Blackstack Brewing, and Revelation Ale Works' Purple Ribbon Pilsner. Drekker came in big with 3 brews: Toon Dip DDH DIP Hopped DIPA (a collab with Fair State Brewing Cooperative), Evil-Natured Robots DIPA, and Chonk Peanut and Jelly Sundae Sour. FInally we end the day with four from Junkyard Brewing. Queen of the Potluck Ambrosia-styled Wheat Ale, Here for the Cake pastry stout (a collab with local women of the brewing industry), Five-Day Rain NEIPA, and the Barrel Aged Wake Up Late stout aged in Willet barrels. Oofda, dat's a lot of beer! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail us at brewsboozeandreviews@hotmail.com. 18 Aug 2020 | Ep. 91 - WIYM - Loco for Locals! | 01:10:28
We here at BBR absolutely love craft beer, and with that comes the love of the craft beer scene! Since we are based primarily out of the Fargo-Moorhead area in ND & MN, we have a blast supporting our friends and breweries as much as we can, so in this show we get back to our roots, and enjoy eight brews made right here in the metro region! During this episode we sample and review Swing Barrel's three flavors of their Short Shorts Hard Seltzer, then hit up Drekker with their collab with Brewing Projekt called Flow Futuristic, followed by DrumConRath's Bog Road Special Gose Strawberry Lemonade Sour Ale and Ligh-Pa New England Style session IPA. We end the podcast with two from Junkyard: Mama's Trip to Hawaii Tropical Punch Style Sour Ale and Tangerine from their famous Super Slurp Fruited Sour with Lactose and Vanilla line. Such tasty beers! If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for future episodes, please feel free to e-mail us at info@brewsboozeandreviews.com. 13 Aug 2019 | Ep. 29 - Gins part 1 | 01:18:02
We've talked about it, so now we've braved it, and we brought help! The BBR crew matches up once again with co-host and co-founder Andrea Anderson, bartender for hire! We also drug along our favorite trivia host Benjamin Revier who absolutely loves gin. We have a survivor-esque tournament to whittle down our four gins to one, and this is part one of that series! P.S. We threw in some of Ben's outtakes from a previous episode that went too long on content, so we hope you enjoy! 20 Apr 2021 | Ep. 126 - Intro to Sherries | 01:26:58
Sherry wine. What is it, besides being a cask that some distilled spirits finish their aging in? Besides being something your grandma cooked with when she was feeling adventurous during the holidays? Sherry is a fortified wine (like port) that can be both sweet (like cream or PX) or it can be dry (fino and manzanillo). The difference being that Port gets fortified while it is fermenting (the added brandy is what stops fermentation) versus Sherries ferment completely before being fortified, so all the grape sugars get turned into alcohol. We sit down with Sean B from Bear Creek Winery to get his expertise on this style. We invite comedian Marquay on the show to round out this interesting panel, so enjoy the debauchery! In this episode we sample and review the Fino and Amontillado from La Garrocha, Delicioso Manzanilla, the Don Nuno Oloroso and Capataz Andre Deluxe Cream from Lustau, and the El Maestro Sierra Pedro Ximenez. Stop by www.bearcreeknd.com to find out more about this local winery. You can check out Marquay at -----> The Cellar <-----so be sure to click that link to learn more. 26 Feb 2020 | Ep. 63 - Malt Liquors (or Fourty Ounces of Trouble) | 01:00:57
A great man once said, "There are two rules to remember if you wanna have a good time. Rule number one, never run out of Colt 45. Rule number two, never forget rule number one." Well, Mr. Williams, we believe you just enough to have a podcast episode about just about that. Malt liquors, or fourties as a couple of us called them in high school (er, um, COLLEGE! Yeah, College!). In this one we sample Steel Brewing Company's High Gravity 211 Steel Reserve, Old English HG800, Colt 45, DrumConRath's Bison Brew, and Mickey's. 25 Aug 2020 | Ep. 92 - Rieslings (or Speckled Cock) | 01:28:37
What's a better wine to enjoy in the hot summer months than a nicely chilled glass of white? And while Chardonnay is arguably the most popular of the white wines, today we delve into the sweet and/or dry world of Rieslings! We here at BBR most definitely were looking for an amusing adventure, so we collected our thoughts, set our eyes towards a gathering of grapes, and with a hearty twist of the bottle cap, we sample and review Boundary Break's 'OLN Ovid Line North' Medium Dry Riesling, Elk Cove's 2017 Willamette Valley Estate Riesling, the 2018 KungFu Girl from Charles Smith Wines, RELAX's RIesling, Nik Weis's St Urbans Hof Estate Riesling Old Vines, and two from Chateau Ste Michelle: their 2018 Columbia Valley Dry riesling, and their 2017 Harvest Select Sweet Riesling. 23 Jun 2020 | Ep. 82 - WIYM - Jayde Edition | 01:04:57
The late great Dr. Suess once said, "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose" in a book called 'Oh, the places you'll go'. Our friend and colleague Jayde is moving (although only an hour away), and so we wanted to make sure that we got her to do her very own episode beforehand. She chose to do a WIYM show, with the goal of everyone bringing something they are thoroughly enjoying at the time, or were VERY curious about tasting. We also invited one of our favorite beer tasters Blake back to have some fun, This podcast opens up with Big Ern's rum-blended fruit slushy drink, then we dig into sampling Golden Road's Champango, B.Nektar's Zombie Killer Cider, Drastic Measure's Hittin Licks Smoothie Sour, Disgruntled Brewing's Dessert First Sour Ale, Stacked Deck Brewing's Jazz Cabbage NEIPA, and ending with Blackstack Brewing's Little Spoon Cereal Milk Stout. From 903 brewing in Texas we have sample their Kilt Switch Scotch Wee Heavy and their Sherman Bock German Bock. We also sample and review a collab between Blackstack Brewing and Falling Knife Brewing called Chop Chop. Then Dorothy's new World Lager from Toppling Goliath, followed by Schell's Shift Happens DDH Lager, and Thesis Beer Project's Thesis Pieces: After Dark Imperial Peanut Butter Porter.
