04 Feb 2022 | A career in journalism with Anne Bagamery | 00:50:53
Anne Bagamery had a fantastic career as a journalist and editor working, among others, for the New York Times Style magazine and the International Herald Tribune. In 2017, she started a business providing communication services to corporations, nonprofits and news organisations. At 14, Anne’s English teacher handed her an essay she had written and told her she should write fiction or be a journalist. She chose the latter and took any opportunity she could to write! If you want to know what it takes to have a career as a journalist, you'll love hearing how Anne managed her career and the lightbulb moment she had while working for Forbes! 14 Feb 2022 | Feeding elk in Wyoming with Rita Hoggan | 00:40:14
Rita is a nuclear scientist who resigned 3 years ago. Now, she spends her winters in a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and son, cut off from the world, feeding elk. Rita enjoyed her career as a nuclear scientist but at some point, she heard her inner voice telling her that she had to quit. She was missing out on her son's life, she felt her career was not progressing and she just had renovated a house. She had no idea what to do next. It was the fall and she said to her add: ‘Don’t hire anybody, I am coming to feed the elk with you’. She shares that journey with us. The beauty of the landscape, the magic of being on continuous vacation for the last three years and a wonderful story of repairing her relationship with her father. Rita is a living example of listening to the inner voice and embracing the unknown! Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

18 Feb 2022 | Shanghai Pride, Ladies Who Tech and more with Charlene Liu | 00:46:22
Charlene Liu has become one of the iconic figures of the LGBT movement in Shanghai. She is also a co-founder of ‘Ladies Who Tech’ and a diversity and inclusion consultant. She somehow always knew that she was gay but it’s only when she organised the Shanghai Pride festival that she finally accepted who she was, and then had the confidence to come out to friends, colleagues and even her family. She is also an engineer and in 2016 she became the co founder of ‘Ladies Who Tech’, a convention that advocates for women working in tech industries. Charlene had many disruptions and unpredictable turns in her life and she thinks that feeling comfortable and confident in her own skin would have been so much easier if she had had more role models as a young woman. 09 Mar 2022 | Liza Jane - a film about a song, with Emily Cohen | 00:38:00
Emily Cohen runs a community radio station in the state of Wyoming called the Jackson Hole Community Radio. She started as a DJ and after a few months became the executive director. This is a fascinating interview about her role as the director and producer of a film about the song Liza Jane, a tune that has been passed back and forth between black and white musicians since the 1800s. Liza Jane is perhaps the most recorded song in America. Emily has worked in teaching, city planning and ecological design. She has always been fascinated by communities and how they live and grow and how we design them so that they are more environmentally friendly. Emily is a great example of "just try things"! 16 Mar 2022 | Giving education and equal opportunities to girls and boys with Janepher Nansubuga | 00:28:18
Janepher has been involved with School for Life Uganda from the very beginning (2009). She is now Director of Community and Welfare. She lived a happy life in Kampala until she was 16 years old. Both her parents then died within a year and she became responsible for her 3 younger siblings. Life was tough. She remembered her father's words: "It is only you who can support yourself to get out of any kind of situation. And you have the solution to every problem that comes your way". She saw how hard it was for her to acquire an education so she decided to learn to be a Montessori teacher. She wanted to give back to children in the same situation as herself. She joined the School for Life as a teacher and today her work involves making sure that the children are well mentally, physically and psychologically. The School for Life is impacting the whole community, not only the children. Their approach is holistic and they have health initiatives, clean water stations and projects around gender based violence. Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

24 Mar 2022 | Being a woman and a mother in the film industry with Nikki Petersen | 01:10:57
Nikki is an American film director and producer based in Paris. She speaks about working in the film industry as a woman and as a mother. Nikki studied film in Paris and quickly realised that it was a male dominated industry. Luckily, she had a lot of support from women. She started freelancing as a journalist and producer for CNN in Paris straight out of school, then freelanced for a few years until she created her own creative agency. Nikki is passionate about avoiding biais towards women in the film industry. ’It’s important to have women in the film industry so that they can tell real and accurate stories that portray them as people and not just as women looking for love interests. When you start giving women cameras and the freedom to film things, you start getting some very interesting scenes and very different viewpoints.’ Nikki lost a pregnancy at 5 months. She now also creates spaces for people to grieve about losing late-term pregnancies. Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

25 Mar 2022 | Offering free education in Tanzania with Gemma Sisia | 01:12:21
Gemma Sisia grew up in Australia and has been living in Tanzania for the past 20 years. In 2002, she founded the School of St. Jude, a charity school in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. Today the school has more than 1800 students. Gemma saw for herself how her parents always made school fees the priority, even when times were tough. When she graduated as a maths and science teacher and had the opportunity to teach in Tanzania, she did. But in the mid- 90’s, many of the students she was teaching had to leave because they were losing their parents to AIDS and weren't able to pay the school fees. That really upset her. Listen to some of her students too in this incredible interview! Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

15 Apr 2022 | ‘There is always a way’ with Hanan Nayel | 00:47:26
Hanan recently retired from her position as General Secretary for Northeast Africa for Danone. She was born in Egypt but has lived in many countries and her career has been far from to linear. Hanan chose to stay at home when she had her two children and was terrified when she returned to work. She felt as many women do - that the world had changed. However, Hanan persisted and, when she moved from Amsterdam to Saudi Arabia, had the courage to pitch a programme proposals directly to the head of a Saudi TV station. Hanan's story is a great reminder that we can do anything if we set our minds to it. I would love to hear any comments you might have on this episode and respond to any questions. If you are passionate about these issues, Natalia also believes there is no better time to join this field! Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

22 Apr 2022 | Mentoring and finding your joy with Pamela Johnson | 00:32:43
Pamela was the director of learning and development at Freddie Mac and a mentor for many. She is now an instructional designer and continues to act as a mentor. Helping and advising people brings a lot of joy to Pamela, so it’s no surprise that she found herself mentoring people quite organically. In the corporate world, people tend to use mentoring as a tool to jump to the next level. For Pamela, advancement comes naturally when you find your joy and your niche at work. As she puts it: ‘It would be really nice if for young people, we could change that paradigm, to think what's going to bring you true pleasure and satisfaction. And pursue that and not worry so much about whether or not it's going to bring you material things or prestige’. She would love to see women advocating for themselves, taking leaps of faith and being braver. She is living her talk and recently left her position at Freddie Mac. Guess what? Her new opportunity as an instructional designer kind of fell into her lap! Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

18 May 2022 | Podcasting original plays with Diane Quinn | 00:46:56
Diane Quinn is the co-founder and artistic director of ‘Unseen Theatre’, an audio podcast showcasing original plays featuring female protagonists. Diane trained in ballet as a child and then went into musical theatre, regional and national theatre and film and television. Eventually, through dancing and singing and focusing on the musical aspect of her career, she transitioned into becoming an actor. She always knew that she wanted to perform in character because she loved reading plays as a child and enjoys inhabiting character and learning about the lives that she hasn’t led. Her latest project, ‘Unseen Theatre’, is an audio podcast that showcases original plays that have not yet been produced. They all have a female protagonist. She wanted to share female stories and the different perspective a female has when going through life. The plays also deal with various current political issues. Diane really loves an audio format as it allows the imagination to be activated. Most importantly, she wanted to be involved in something that was accessible to a large group of people regardless of location, financial situation and mobility. ‘Unseen Theatre’ is available in all podcast platforms. 26 May 2022 | Protecting marine megafauna in Bangladesh with Elisabeth Fahrni Mansur | 00:28:47
Elisabeth is the Senior Manager of the Marine Conservation Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in Bangladesh. Her main focus is on protecting threatened marine megafauna. Elisabeth grew up in Switzerland and started her career as a teacher. In 2002, she moved to Bangladesh, married a Bangladeshi and ‘fell into’ conservation work. When she was working as a tour guide in the Sundarban forest, she and her husband became aware of the lack of protection of aquatic ecosystems in Bangladesh. Thanks to her encounter with Brian Smith, a mentor from the Wildlife Conservation Society, she began a program for protecting threatened marine megafauna. She talks in detail about the successes of the program, both in protecting the megafauna and in obtaining the support of the local people. Although there are difficulties in living in Bangladesh, Elisabeth finds that there is a lot of space for creativity and innovation and the freedom to try things out. She also takes great pride in the growing conservation movement and is a strong supporter of the professional development of people who are interested and keen in pursuing this career.
Staci and Brooke work together at rebellion energy in Oklahoma. Staci is the president and CEO and Brooke is the senior engineering and geological technician. They are also the co-founders of Fellow Environmental Partners, a non-profit focussed on plugging orphaned oil and gas wells in an effort to reduce methane emissions. Staci and Brooke wanted to do something different for their next project. They were throwing around ideas and started to think about abandoned wells. The more they learnt about the methane emissions and water contamination caused by abandoned oil wells, the more they realised that no one was focussing on the massive environmental damage being caused and how to stop it. It is a highly technical issue with huge social and environmental impacts. There are hundreds of thousands of orphaned wells - under schools, under houses or under agricultural land. Some are visible - some are not. They can be thought of as wells whose legal owner cannot be found, most becoming wards of the state. The costs of plugging a well are huge. Average well costs begin at $20,000 to plug. Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

04 Aug 2022 | Growing up in postwar Central London with author J M Philips | 00:34:04
Jill Philips is the author of "Lamlash Street, a portrait of 1960s, postwar London through one family's story". In this episode, Jill talks about why it was so important for her to write a book about growing up in Cockney London after the war. From food rationing to swimming lessons, Jill gives us an insight into the reality of life in the heart of Cockney London only a few short decades ago. In writing the book, she came to understand how important family was to her and what a strong support system she had had growing up, with family and friends all living close by. This gave her a sense of safety and helped her to succeed later in life. It took her three years to write the book, with the help of a writing coach. Her family and friends were sceptical about her writing a book, which is why she chose someone who was not going to let her future be determined by what she had achieved in the past. Sheena Simpson completed a Master's degree in Asian History at the University of Sydney and specialized in the development of the Indian railways. She traveled to India on five separate occasions from 1989 to 2005 where she experienced first hand what it was like to travel on the railways. In her thesis, she studied the economic and social impact of railways on the Indian population, but also the harsh working conditions. The British had started to build railways in India because of the flourishing cotton trade - the railways and the cotton trade were run by the East India Company. Sheena journey was extremely rewarding and she invites us to follow our interests, even if we are not sure where they will lead us. Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

11 Oct 2022 | Why women sabotage other women with Jennifer Hicks | 00:50:05
Jennifer Hicks is the Director of Client & Business Development at Capital Fund Law Group. She speaks about transitioning from her role as a police officer to working in corporate. She is also a strong champion of women and specifically addresses why women sabotaging other women. She left law enforcement and started a new adventure as an administrative assistant at Capital Fund Law Group and quickly climbed the ladder to her current position as Director of Client & Business Development. She saw many similarities between how women were perceived in the corporate world and how they were perceived in law enforcement. But a particular event in the corporate world started her thinking about why some women sabotage others. As she puts it: ‘I don't want them to have to go through the vile, awful things and business that some women have had to go through, just to understand how corporate works, and to network and to get ahead doesn't mean having to do things that are against your character’. 23 Nov 2022 | Pushing against cultural traditions with Lilian Sue | 00:51:06
Lilian Sue is a PR coach and publicist. She helps creative entrepreneurs to build healthy PR mindsets and a successful PR strategy. Lilian grew up in a very traditional Chinese Canadian family. She explains the difficulties that she's had in pushing against the cultural traditions and the strict family roles, and what it's meant to her to live the life that she wanted. She learnt very early on to put boundaries in place and have ‘No Go Zones’ in order to maintain somewhat of a positive relationship with her parents. One of the early pieces of entrepreneurship advice that she got from mentors have been ‘Don't take advice from somebody who's never been there’. Because anything they tell you is not going to give you the answer that you need, or that you're looking for, to move forward. And that's been very, very true. She also thinks that as women, we are not taught to celebrate ourselves enough. And that's what she is trying to change in her business and on a personal level. 16 Feb 2023 | Public speaking with ease for introverted women with Julia Kraft | 00:36:21
Julia is an ‘expression mentor’. She specialises in working with introverted and anxiety-prone women who have a history of public speaking fear or performance anxiety and it's holding them back in their careers or from growing their business. Julia initially trained as an actress and then became a yoga teacher. Eventually she wanted more and she started teaching yoga teachers about their voice and about how to be confident in the spotlight before she transitioned to working with professionals and entrepreneurs. The progression of her work as a public speaking coach has also mirrored the progression of her own growth. She came to realise that she was an anxious and introverted person and that it was exhausting her. So she started diving into nervous system regulation techniques. This led her to specialise in working with introverted women and helping them to regulate their nervous system, take care of their energy, manage their lifestyle and transform them into authentic, powerhouse speakers. Julia encourages them to remember that the world needs their voice. In fact, it's the introverted ones, and it's the women who often have the most important messages that the world hasn't yet heard. She trusts that they’ve taken time to really feel into and think through what they want to share.

She also talks about her mother's extraordinary life as a wife in Papua New Guinea and how this inspired her to interview other Australian women and children who had had the same experience. She was driven to get the stories right, in memory of the women who had confided their stories in her. Jan knew that once these women died, the stories would be gone. Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain Clarisse Hagège, CEO of Xkey, a block-chain company, asks: “is that where the energy is?” rather than “can I do it?” She doesn’t let anything stop her. “You hear: “we want companies with women CEOs in our portfolio” so I thought I was in such a nice position - woman, CEO, blockchain - but there is definitely a discrepancy between what you hear and the reality. The COO and I both sent out exactly the same email to investors. But he had more people responding to him than I did.” Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

04 Feb 2021 | Susi Prescott on the twelve years she spent teaching in the slums of Peru | 01:06:57
Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain Still unsure, she went trekking with friends in Peru where, on a freezing day, high up in the Andes, a tiny, shivering child changed her life forever. She decided that, somehow, she would return to use her skills to help in whatever way she could. After short periods teaching in Nepal and then Rwanda, she returned to the town of Arequipa, in Peru. Although she had given up her job, home and life in Australia, she had little idea how her vision would unfold if, indeed, at all. Susi relates how serendipity led her to a struggling school, Colegio Elohim, in the desert squatter settlements surrounding the town. She describes the work that she did there, the living conditions endured by the children and some of the best and the worst moments she experienced. Having intended to stay for a year, she ended up spending twelve, working in the dusty slums, where seventy percent of the population of Arequipa eke out an existence. Talking to Susi left me with vivid images of valleys filled with refuse, families living in stone shacks with dirt floors, violence, snow-capped volcanoes . . . and two women - Susi and Rosa, the school’s director - giving their all to help students and families alike. Unforgettably, 250 children putting their arms around Susi’s neck to wish her happy birthday. And the joy and passion of the Latin culture which permeates every level of society - its flamboyance, its irresistible music and most especially for Susi, its exuberant dance. They managed to begin a secondary school. Of the first (and only) graduation year of nine last year, three (all girls) have already applied for university, with possibly more coming later. An amazing achievement, particularly in that terrible year of Covid lockdown. Although the secondary school has not survived due to lack of funds, Susi radiates with the satisfaction that at least these nine adolescents have brighter prospects for the future. Susi’s memoir of her time in Peru, “Where Hummingbirds Dance”, was published in 2017. Her second book, “Beyond the Priest’s Cottage”, about her origins, was published in 2020. The books, together with more information on the project, are available on her website at www.susiprescott.com and all proceeds generated by sales go to Colegio Elohim.
Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain Deborah Carter is Canadian and lives in The Netherlands. In 2014, she created NewTechKids because she wanted her son and other children to have a place where they could fall in love with technology and computer science and learn how to be innovators and inventors. Last summer, she launched a new initiative, PreparationTech in order to showcase the stories of a diverse and inclusive group of students, tradespeople and professionals whose work intersects with technology in order to help kids understand that they will need tech knowledge and skills, no matter what study or career path they choose. When Deborah says “tech”, she means digital technology, internet technology and robotics. She is passionate about teaching kids how to think about technology and the logic of technology and to see tech as a problem-solving and creativity tool. Not only is Deborah passionate about tech, she is also passionate about teaching. She shares some great tips about how NewTechKids has adapted its teaching methods to ensure that it is interesting for everyone. She talks about the interviews she has done for Preparation Tech, including her interview with Arlan Hamilton who founded a venture capital firm (while homeless) which funds startups led by women and people of colour and Pablos Holman, one of the most famous hackers in the world. 18 Mar 2021 | Selina Spowart on the extraordinary difficulties of living with children with disabilities | 00:58:44
Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain This is an incredible story. Selina Spowart has three boys. Her eldest son has Tuberous Sclerosis, a rare neurological disorder, autism and epilepsy. Her third son is also on the autism spectrum. Selina talks us through what it was like to come to terms with the fact that her child had a serious and lifelong disability. She talks about homeschooling, depression and suicidal thoughts and the terrifying adolescent violence in the home. She talks about the hidden costs to parents and carers of children with disabilities. As she herself says, she was pushed beyond what anyone should reasonably be expected to deal with. But she also talks about the good times and how her humour kept her going. She used to ring her sister and say: “Tell me about someone who has it worse than me.” She has come out of it resilient and is now working to help other people caring for children with disabilities. Her final message is so terribly important: she encourages women who are threatened by their children and who might feel ashamed about how violent their home life is to talk to someone, anyone, because they aren’t alone.
15 Apr 2021 | Harriet Spalding on her extraordinary life in the film industry and in the Camargue | 00:48:38
“On some level I felt like there is a part of me that is in a new location, a new scene, a new set of lines but it’s life, it’s not fantasy. I feel like this is where I’m meant to be. I’ve always felt like I’m on a journey to somewhere but I don’t think I’ve felt as at home anywhere else I’ve been than where I am now. It just makes sense.” - Harriet Spalding Harriet Spalding has had an amazing life and admits that was largely due to the lottery of being raised by extraordinary parents. Her mother, Barbara did her final school exams in a sanatorium, suspected of having TB in the early 1950’s, and came top of the state. She went on to run the Victorian Council of Social Services (VCOSS), The Victorian Institute of Secondary Education (VISE), multiple State and Federal philanthropical organizations and culminated her career by working for the World Health Organization. She was awarded an Order of Australia in 2018 at the age of 80. Her father, after completing 2 degrees simultaneously at Melbourne University, hitchhiked around Australia in the late 50s and then travelled again in the early 60’s to every single Aboriginal mission. One of the few people to ever have made the journey. He returned to Melbourne and quietly dedicated the remainder of his life advocating for the importance of acknowledging the ’true' condition of Aboriginal Australians and the misrepresentation of their history in educational texts. His expansive experiences on the road in Australian Aboriginal communities and his subsequent involvement in the Overseas Service Bureau aka Community Aid Abroad meant Harriet and her sisters were exposed to a diverse community of his ‘ friends’ during their formative years. Harriet studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, then went to the US, Mexico and Canada to work as an assistant director on international film and television productions. She then worked with the formidable Australian Producer, Andrew Mason (The Matrix Trilogies and The Crow) to assist on International co-productions in locations such as Romania and France. She lived in Aspen Colorado for over 20 years and started to teach yoga there. She still teaches one or two classes a day. She was asked to teach yoga in Arles in the south of France, which is where she now lives. She talks about her love for the cultural and historical richness that exists in Arles and on life en Camargue, where she rides horses with the Guardians and the people trying to hold on to their deep love of traditions and customs unique to this region of the world. Harriet is the creator of “La Belle Vie Project”, a hospitality program for people who need time and space to work creatively: On 27 April, I am running a free webinar called "Women Empowering Women" - a group of women helping each other to the next level in their career. 22 Apr 2021 | Sonia Marshall on her impressive work in environment and sustainability on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia | 00:56:18
"Lucky for me, I have really, really grey hair. At about the age of 35, I decided to let my hair go completely grey. I would sit in the board room meetings with mainly men around the table and me in a more junior position and I'd watch their body language. Things like if you don't agree, you put your hands behind your head or your hands down on the table or sit back in your chair. And me and my grey hair walked in there. The body language and the colour of my hair gave me authenticity in male-dominated board rooms and groups. It really made a difference." - Dr. Sonia Marshall She talks about the differences between “environmental interpretation” - a one-off engagement on a particular environmental subject - and “environmental psychology” - a framework for people’s immediate emotional responses in a particular situation. She currently works in environment and sustainability policy on the Sunshine Coast and tells us about the main projects she has worked on, including the application to have the Sunshine Coast recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere.
06 May 2021 | Red Tents - Unravelling our past and weaving our shared future - a new book on places where women can connect | 00:40:53
“Red Tents are places for women to connect, to relate to one another, to support one another. Red tents were inspired by the book “The Red Tent'' by Anita Diamond, which is a fictional account of women in Biblical times meeting in a red tent, but they also share a lot with cultures around the world, such as women’s circles, educating women about patriarchies in the 60s and 70s and indigeneous practices where women have met in different communities in the world.” - Mary Ann Clements Aisha Hannibal and Mary Ann Clements have just published a fabulous new book called “Red Tents - Unravelling our past and weaving our shared future”. The book is about “red tents” - spaces for groups of women or people who don’t fit into the gender binary to drop their responsibilities for an hour or so and be fully listened to. The book is about how to set up a “red tent” that works and includes stories from over 70 people about their experiences in red tents. Aisha and Mary Ann talk about why women and people outside the gender binary need red tents and what they have got out of belonging to a red tent themselves. They talk about the journey of writing the book and the huge benefits of writing the book together.
10 Jun 2021 | Overcoming child sexual abuse with May Baxter-Thornton | 00:50:31
“It was when the leaders on the course were describing how a child would feel when they had been sexually abused and I remember thinking: I don’t need you to tell me this, I know already. This was the first time I knew, if that makes sense. It had never really dawned on me that that’s what that was. I had nothing to compare it to. When you’re a small child, you only know what the adults around you tell you. So I didn’t know that what I was going through was any different to anyone else. When you’re growing up with it, when you’re an infant, you don’t have anything to compare it to. You don’t have the life skills. You aren’t able to make those connections in the same way an adult can.” - May Baxter-Thornton May Baxter-Thornton grew up in a coal-mining town in Wales. Her father, a promising musician, was sent down the mines when he was fourteen. He sexually abused May from when she was a young child to when she was about nine. She talks about learning to have the courage to be able to talk about her sexual abuse openly, about the type of man her father was and about her memories of her childhood. She talks about how difficult it is for children to say that they are being sexually abused, the signs to look out for and what we can do about it if we suspect that there is a problem. She talks about her role as a member of the Victims and Survivors Consultative Panel for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in England and Wales (for more information visit www.iicsa.org.uk or www.truthproject.org.uk). We discuss the difficulties of managing a problem that occurs in the intimacy of people’s homes and whether the criminal justice system is the best way of stopping this behaviour. May has a podcast called ‘Dragontart presents…’, this play on words embraces the labels used by society to demonise women. May discusses a different issue each week and it can be found wherever you get your podcasts. Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au

19 Jun 2021 | Restoring Collits Inn with Christine Stewart | 00:46:34
This is a very special episode, because the person I am interviewing is... my Mum. Mum is hugely creative but she is also a doer - she will have an idea and the next thing you know, the project will be up and running or even finished. She is a drawer and a painter, was a potter for a while, she ran an arts and crafts shop for many years, and I don’t remember a time when she wasn’t doing up houses. She organised her last painting exhibition at the age of 82. In this interview, I talk to her about what was probably the most important project in her life: restoring Collits Inn. Collits Inn is situated at the foot of the western side of the Blue Mountains, two hours west of Sydney, and is one of Australia’s oldest inns. When she and Dad bought it, it was a ruin but she turned it into an award-winning French restaurant. Cecilia Poullain Music: Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au
