15 Dec 2022EPISODE 130: TEACHER THERAPY SESSION: PERFECTIONISM & THE HOLIDAYS00:46:41

Today’s episode is truly a gift to the Brave New Teaching community. It’s Amanda here, and I’m joined by my dear friend and life coach, Blair Wilson.

I met Blair during 2020 when I was taking my first steps in seeking out therapy and mental help support during the overwhelming experience of pandemic teaching. I knew that I needed to have someone to talk to in order to process through my aspirations, my issues, my questions, and all of the things that were holding me up in my personal life and making teaching particularly difficult at the time, other than the circumstances. Enter Blair.

In this conversation, we are focusing on the topic of perfectionism in teachers, especially during the holiday season. There are so many expectations from us during this season both at home and at work. All of this chaos can really take a toll on our mental health, so she is going to help us navigate through the perfectionism, realign our expectations, and just be more present in our lives.

We’re discussing the potential for viewing poetry as an argument, and looking at poetry through the lens of rhetorical analysis. We want to help you see poetry from a different angle, and consider where you can incorporate this into your units.

28 Feb 2022Episode 88: COMPARE AND CONTRAST: USING MULTIPLE INTERPRETATIONS OF A TEXT00:36:56

A lot of the feedback we get about Shakespeare-related content is that you feel like it’s just too much. It feels hard, and you don’t want to do it. We totally get that, and we’ve been there. But that’s why we get so excited about the things we talk about because we really have found ways to make it a part of the day that you and your students will look forward to.

The practice of analysis can get painfully routine. Students read something and then analyze it. But there’s a better way. There’s a way to add a layer to the analysis by visually looking at multiple interpretations of a text.

One of our favorite ways to do this is through film. We’ll share how we’ve used film as a tool, rather than a reward, to solve a problem that many of us face.

01 Sep 2022EPISODE 115: TRANSFORMING FRANKENSTEIN WITH A NOVEL IN VERSE00:46:14

Sometimes the best ideas and inspiration come from hearing about other teachers’ experiences in the classroom. That’s why I’m excited to have Ana Perez on the Brave New Teaching podcast today.

Ana is a 10th year high school ELA teacher and a Jill of many other trades including poetry, Zumba, and techy resource creation. In the classroom she's a proponent of relationships over content, and outside the classroom, she enjoys creating resources to help other teachers foster meaningful relationships, too. She is passionate about sharing both knowledge and empathy, and believes strongly in the importance of mental health for both teachers and students.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Ana share how she paired Frankenstein with Punching the Air. She created an entire unit that covered a classic text, a film of that text, and a YA novel in-verse. She’s going to tell us all about how she dreamed this unit up, how she planned it all out, and how the unit actually went for her students. Buckle up, because it's incredible!

26 Jan 2023EPISIODE 136: TACKLING THE THREAT OF AI IN THE SECONDARY CLASSROOM00:32:20

We’ve got a lot of things to worry about as teachers, and now we get to add ‘plagiarized stuff that was written by a bot’ to the list!

That’s right - it’s time to chat about ChatGPT.

If you haven’t heard of ChatGPT, it’s an AI chatbot system that can be used to help you write all kinds of things. It’s building buzz quickly in the teaching world, and causing a lot of panic because students have used it for things like writing assignments and assessments.

Before we all completely freak out, let’s take a look at what this AI technology really means for the world of education and ask the burning questions that are running through our minds.

We’re even bringing on words of wisdom from Krista Barbour and Shana Ramin. They have some great insight about ChatGPT that will validate your feelings, but also give you some incredible ideas for how you can use this technology to your advantage.

So, take a listen, and a collective deep breath with us. It’s normal to feel scared about the rise of AI in classrooms, but it’s also not going anywhere anytime soon. Let’s familiarize ourselves with it and determine how we can make it work for us instead of against us!

27 Oct 2022EPISODE 123: THE BEST THING I EVER TAUGHT: GATEWAY ACTIVITIES00:40:53

We’re kicking off a new 4-episode series called The Best Thing I Ever Taught. (If the name sounds like it’s inspired by The Best Thing I Ever Ate from the Food Network, it’s because it is!) Inside this series, we’ll be sharing all kinds of things that bring us joy and that we, and our students, have seen a huge return on. This week we’re focusing on gateway activities.

First, let’s define exactly what a gateway activity is. It has everything to do with what we do here at Brave New Teaching - essential questions and an inquiry-based curriculum design. More specifically, a gateway activity is the activity at the very beginning of a unit of study that gets your student buy-in. It introduces students to the topics being covered, and gets the chatter going about the essential question for the unit.

We are both sharing the details of the best gateway activities that we’ve each taught, one with a Gatsby unit and the other with a Shakespeare unit. This conversation will let you in on the process of planning these gateway activities, and hopefully you can see that there’s no set procedure for this. It takes brainstorming, and it gets a little messy, but that’s how the best ideas come to be!

If you have any questions after listening, we want to hear from you! Send us a message with questions or comments @bravenewteaching on Instagram. If you want more support with using gateway activities, we invite you to join us in Curriculum Rehab.

30 Dec 2021Episode 80: (RE-RUN) ESSENTIAL QUESTION WORKSHOP: 12TH GRADE LIT00:34:39

Today's episode is a re-run of one of our favorites. Grab your pen and paper because you may want to take notes on the magic that happens in this episode. We’re doing a LIVE essential question workshop, which we haven’t done since last year (by the way, doesn’t last year feel like a decade ago?).

The point of this workshop is for Marie to plan and prepare essential questions for an upcoming 12th grade literature course. The end goal is to help students begin to find ways to recognize all the various parts of themselves through characters in texts.

Lucky for all of us, Amanda is absolutely incredible at writing and thinking through essential questions. Together we’ll talk through the themes we want to cover and the outcomes we want students to have as we craft an engaging and thought-provoking question.

The essential questions writing process is SO much more enjoyable when you can go through it with someone else. It truly is a process and you have to say the bad ideas out loud before you can get to the good ones! As you begin to create your own EQs this year, just keep in mind that students thrive on predictability and routine. In other words, keep it simple!

29 Jul 2021Episode 58: CLASSROOM SETUP FOR 202100:28:28

Imagine stepping into your classroom at the beginning of the new school year. What do you feel? Excitement? Overwhelm? Maybe all the Pinterest images you’ve been staring at all summer start to run through your head. Whether you’re stepping back into your old room, a new room, or your FIRST EVER classroom, it’s your space and it’s important to feel good in it.

Before you go and make a zillion trips to the Target Dollar Spot, slow down and really think about what truly matters when it comes to your classroom. Do you really need those paper lanterns or more book boxes? If the answer is yes, then go for it! With so many distractions, the key is to be intentional and create a space that is functional. As we like to say, have your room do the work for you. If you have absolutely no idea what that means, don’t you worry. We’ll tell you all about it in this episode.

Just remember that decorating your classroom should be fun. But there’s also a lot of pressure. How you do, or don’t, decide to decorate your room does not make you a good or bad teacher.

04 Aug 2022EPISODE 111: OUR 3 R'S AND 3 C'S OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SERIES PART 100:40:40

As you prepare for another school year, how are you feeling about your classroom management? We don’t know about you, but we were raised in an age of clip charts, reward systems, and overall surface level management systems that were really creating inequitable experiences for students.

We now know that there are better practices to put in place that are equitable and responsive to all kids. Your goal is not a perfect classroom. Your goal is to create an environment where your students are going to be academically and socially successful; to create a safe space where students can have hard conversations, be vulnerable, and trust each other.

Thinking about classroom management in a new way can be overwhelming, especially when you’ve got so much else on your plate at the beginning of the year. As always, that’s why we are here to help support you and take some of that pressure off.  This episode is the first of a four-episode series all about classroom management. You won’t only hear from us, but also other amazing educators who have gotten their classroom management really dialed in, in ways that are so organic and invigorating.

05 Aug 2021Episode 59: ESSENTIAL QUESTION WORKSHOP: 12TH GRADE LIT00:34:39

Grab your pen and paper because you may want to take notes on the magic that happens in today’s episode.

03 Nov 2022EPISODE 124: THE BEST THING I EVER TAUGHT: GROUP WORK00:30:07

How do you feel about group work? Love it or dread it? Either way, stay tuned because today marks the second episode in our four part “The Best Thing I Ever Taught” series, where we’re covering group work.

You can probably tell by the title of this episode that we love group work now…but trust us, that hasn’t always been the case. In the past, we absolutely detested it. Group work was one of those things that led to over planning, too much management, and way too much grading.

Fast forward to today, and we’re happy to report that student collaboration is one of the main pillars of our teaching practice.

We’re going to give you specific examples of group work activities that have worked brilliantly in our classes. One of them even involves students creating a podcast episode! We hope that these ideas give you some new ideas as to how you can incorporate group work that is engaging for your students and builds classroom community (without adding more work on your end).

22 Jul 2021Episode 57: NEW TEACHERS NEED MENTORS00:27:19

Look, we’re not going to sugarcoat it.  Your first few years of teaching are TOUGH. It’s the beginning of a new career and it takes some time to find your footing. Don’t even get us started on the constant meetings that you can’t even pay attention to because you’re SO overwhelmed. There’s a reason why more teachers leave this profession in their first three years than any other point in their career. Those first three years are a make or break time. We want to help you prepare for it!

Hopefully you’re feeling excited about the upcoming year, but it’s also okay to be nervous! Or, if you’re anything like we were, you may be waltzing into your first year with the highest confidence thinking you know it all! Regardless of how you’re feeling about this new adventure, you need support as a beginning teacher. You need a mentor. But not just any mentor! You need someone who will help you focus on the practical things rather than all the fluff.

PS - This conversation is just as relevant for veteran teachers. We are all responsible for taking care of new teachers. They are coming in with a fresh perspective, and we can all learn from each other!

22 Sep 2022EPISODE 118: JUST MERCY UNIT MAKEOVER: NONFICTION SERIES PART 300:31:47

We love a good unit makeover, and today you’ll hear part of one in action! We’re going to do a makeover on a unit that Marie has taught one time so far. It uses the text, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.

This unit is part of a brand new course. As many of you may have experienced, brand new course + brand new unit = flying by the seat of your pants! In other words, it’s a good time to talk through it and think about some changes that can be made the next time that it’s used.

The unit that we’re talking about in today’s episode looks at systems of power. You’ll hear us discuss the vision for this unit, go through some clarifying questions, and move into forming an essential question. Most importantly, you’ll gain an understanding that this process is pretty messy to work through!

Summer is finally here, and we are here for it! Teacher summer break is truly something that nobody outside of the profession really understands. It’s a mix of emotions and if you’re anything like us, you may be battling with choosing how to spend this time.

Should you focus on rest? Should you use the summer months to plan and prepare for the upcoming year so you feel less overwhelmed when it’s time to go back to work? Is there a middle ground?

Well friends, we sent out the bat signal and called on other teachers to share their perspective and experiences with how they approach summer break. You’ll get to hear straight from fellow teachers in today’s episode as they answer questions like:

  • What does summer break mean for you?
  • What summer break rituals do you honor?
  • What’s your approach to summer PD/growth/planning for next year?
  • What are some summer break mistakes you’ve made and how did you fix them?

18 Aug 2022EPISODE 113: RELATIONSHIPS AND BEHAVIOR (INTERVIEW WITH DR. DEONNA SMITH) CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SERIES PART 301:08:30

When you think about your role as a teacher, are you trying to control your classroom, or are you trying to build a community?

Our guest today, Dr. Deonna Smith is asking the tough, yet crucial, questions like this in part three of our series on classroom management! This is her zone of genius, and we couldn’t be happier to have her on the podcast to share her experience and insight.

Deonna is a former teacher, instructional coach and school leader. Before transitioning into leadership, Deonna taught intervention, elementary and middle school math and science. As a student and teacher,  Deonna saw how systemic racism negatively impacted both adults and kids. This experience set Deonna on a journey to learn more about how teachers can liberate their students’ potential through anti racist practices. Deonna is dedicated to her own learning as well and recently completed her doctorate in education from Loyola Marymount University.
