When Christian teen David Gutierrez arrives at his new high school, he is immediately mortified by being the only kid who says “Under God” during the pledge. He is ruthlessly mocked by the school bully and called into the headmaster’s (Casper Van Dien) office to be reprimanded for breaking the school’s “religious tolerance” rules, which of course mean that all religions are tolerated except for Christianity. David’s debate club advisor (Kevin Sorbo) encourages him to take a stand for his beliefs; this leads David to cause a “viral moment” by asking a visiting presidential candidate (Antonio Sabata Jr.) to put God back into politics, the video of which is then spread online like wildfire. ONE NATION UNDER GOD is a relatively high-budget film for the Christian genre, directed by Lisa Arnold (This Is Our Time), which delightfully hits all the most cliche beats of the faith-based films we know in love — atheist teachers, precocious Christian kids, a preoccupation with “going viral”, and a climactic showdown debate where the Christian kid owns his opponent with logic and reason. It also stars a pantheon of Christian film royalty, with one of Sorbo’s best film performances ever, even though he’s playing basically he same character he plays in all of his films. ONE NATION UNDER GOD is the perfect Christian film to put on with your friends because it’s not too depressing, has several laugh out loud moments, and might even give you a few talking points for your next debate. You’ll be proud that our founding fathers made the Constitution go viral!

Have you ever wanted to enter... The CheyZone™? Perhaps you were so enamored by our reviews of Tim Chey movies that you fantasized yourself living within one. You could imagine yourself as one of the high IQ geniuses who are forced to confront a terrorist in THE GENIUS CLUB, or an A-list actor wanted for murder in LIVE FAST, DIE YOUNG. What if we told you that your desire could finally come to life? This 90 minute audio piece uses segments from Tim Chey films to weave together a simulation of life in The CheyZone™, which is a term we coined to mean the climax of every Tim Chey movie where all of the characters start screaming at each other about Christian dogma and moral debates. Chey is one of our favorite directors, and we consider his writing style fascinating. We love the way that all of the characters gradually lose their identities and become a kind of Greek dramatic chorus that helps Chey prove his point about such topics as evolution not being real, or car alarms being literally invented by the devil to torment mankind. Happy new year! We hope you'll enjoy this special presentation, and we wish you many long nights this year arguing with your loved ones about culture war issues.

There’s actually not a ton of information online about THE GOOSEHILL GANG. It’s a book series authored by Mary Blount Christian, a prolific children’s book author who has published work outside of the Christian sphere as well as within. Loosely based on these books was a 5 episode home video series directed by Stephen Erkel in 1980. Lead child actress Allison Balson is a notable cast member in all of these, since she later appeared in a recurring role in the 1980s TV series LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. Still, THE GOOSEHILL GANG doesn’t have a nostalgic fan community online, nor anyone who seems to have dedicated time to archiving information about it. (If anyone has more info, please contact us at boysbiblestudypodcast@gmail.com.) Although we didn’t have a lot of clues to follow, we were intrigued to cover this series — in fact, Bible Boy Scott owns a GOOSEHILL GANG episode on VHS from his days collecting forgotten tapes for Everything Is Terrible. We dive into two episodes. Notable is THE MYSTERY OF THE TREEHOUSE GHOST, where “gang” member Michael continues to defy his parents by reading ghost stories they would prefer he not read. The rest of Michael’s friends support his parents unequivocally, stealing the ghost books from him and reminding him he is not allowed. We also check out THE MYSTERY OF THE HOWLING WOODS, where the strong Christian faith of the Goosehill Gang leads them to not be afraid of a convicted armed robber who has escaped from prison and is hiding nearby in the woods where they are camping. If you’re a ten year old with God on your side, you’re basically immortal - unless you’re in the wrong kind of Christian movie and you perish from a sudden illness.

26 Jun 2022Play the Flute (2019)01:22:03

Fake sexual harassment allegations threaten to ruin a youth pastor’s reputation in the newest feature length drama by Rich Christiano (1/2 of the famous Christiano brothers, and the director behind such classics as THE SECRETS OF JONATHAN SPERRY and TIME CHANGER). When Brandon, and his beautiful wife Lisa, make it their mission to  change the lives of their church’s indifferent youth group by inspiring vigorous devotion to the Bible, the couple don’t realize the challenge they’re facing. Through a series of passionate sermons, including hilariously direct reference to Christiano’s previous films, Brandon causes one particularly delinquent boy named Squirrel to stop slacking off on the job and ripping off his boss (played by legendary character actor Clint Howard). But when spoiled rich girl Shannon tries to oust Brandon by falsely claiming that he “made a pass” at her, it takes a group gaslighting campaign to bring the rest of the teens together, finally united in Christ.

16 May 2021Brother Enemy (1981) feat. Dante Fontana01:16:01

In this deceptively charming yet complicated film by Russell S. Doughton Jr., the director of the very popular apocalyptic Christian film A THIEF IN THE NIGHT, a ragtag group of lost and lonely youth are pushed to the brink when their after school basketball practice is cancelled for two entire months so the gym can be taken over by a famous Christian puppeteer. In a fit of vengeful rage, they trash puppeteer David Wiemer’s studio, but their plan is foiled when they get arrested and the judge sentences them to help out with the same puppet show they nearly destroyed. One by one, David uses the power of puppetry to bring the kids to Christ, but he must confront each of his mentees’ personal traumas along the way. Our longtime friend Dante Fontana, a talented DJ and video artist who has been creating found footage mixtapes and contributing video collages to Everything Is Terrible for a decade, shows us this fascinating film and teaches us about the influential Iowa-based Christian film production companies Heartland Films and Mark IV Productions.

28 Jan 2024The Unexpected Bar Mitzvah (2015)01:42:55

Baruch atah Adonai, y’all! We’re back exploring the exciting filmography of director Chip Rossetti and his co-director/writer/muse Donald James Parker, aka “Gramps” of GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE fame. Both of these men are artists we at Boys’ Bible Study consider powerhouses of the DIY Christian film community. We’re excited to tentatively declare THE UNEXPECTED BAR MITZVAH the best film we’ve seen so far coming from their longtime collaboration, which is remarkable given the strength of GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE, the film that singlehandedly took on the evils of evolution, teen horniness, and binge drinking. Donald James Parker’s script for THE UNEXPECTED BAR MITZVAH is remarkably complex, both in the way it advocates for a combination of Messianic Judaism and Charismatic Protestantism as the ultimate way to worship God, but also for the way it treads the line between well-studied respect for Jewish traditions and insane anti-Semitic depictions of the day-to-day lives of Jewish people. The film opens with a yarmulke-wearing father screaming at his son forbidding him from being a fan of the briefly sensational Christian football player Tim Tebow. Then, we meet a 12-year-old Christian jock who is obsessed with reading about the Holocaust and has the life goal of making a Jewish friend who he could convert to Christ. When the Jewish boy and Christian boy’s lives suddenly collide, both of their families are changed forever, and something... let’s just say, “unexpected” happens. An endless amount of quotable lines, laugh out loud scenes, and deep religious lore make THE UNEXPECTED BAR MITZVAH a riveting watch we’d recommend to all lovers of DIY film.

Stephen Groo is a remarkable artist — an “outsider” filmmaker who boasts over 200 completed films in his catalog. His work was the subject of the 2018 documentary THE INSUFFERABLE GROO, which features Jack Black acting in one of Groo’s films. It was the first time a mainstream Hollywood actor had ever engaged with Groo’s work, and marked a milestone in a prolific career that until that point was largely obscure and ignored by the film world. Groo’s filmography is a bizarre mix of original stories and unauthorized adaptations of existing intellectual properties. BATMAN, TOMB RAIDER, and even YU-GI-OH are some of the media properties that Groo has incorporated into his cinematic universe. With such a huge array of films to explore, we at Boys’ Bible Study were pretty overwhelmed to embark on the journey of getting to know this unique filmmaker. Then, our friend Wormy recommended we start with CHALLENGE OF FAITH, a distinctly Christian offering from Groo featuring an original script about the moral dangers of ignoring your faith and family to try to succeed in business. Groo writes, directs, and stars in this picture as Jason Quinn, a humble desk clerk at an unnamed company who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is mysteriously promoted all the way up to be the new company president. He’s thrilled at first to create a more comfortable lifestyle for he and his wife, but when a mysterious goth stranger starts poking around the office, Jason starts to wonder if this new success was actually the bait to a spiritual trap laid by the devil himself. CHALLENGE OF FAITH is a delightful and relatively sophisticated “outsider” film, tightly constructed but with that homemade, mid-aughts, shot-on-digital campiness that we here at BBS love to see in a film. Add an encounter with a powerful angel, and a spirit quest back in time to the Garden of Eden, and it became immediately clear to us that CHALLENGE OF FAITH had firmly immortalized Stephen Groo as one of our favorite filmmakers.

In this anti-porn short film, a man struggles with porn addiction and lustful thoughts that are tearing his relationship apart. He parks down in front of the family desktop computer, opens a search engine, types the word "pornography" in the search bar, and just kind of sits there for a while while crying. Meanwhile, in the theater of his mind, this internal conflict manifests as a boxing match where he's getting his ass kicked by a really big guy. But the film really clinches it in its cathartic ending, cementing its status as a contemporary cult Christian favorite. Apologies for our raunchiest episode yet -- it's very difficult for us to larp as a Christian podcast now that we've put this one out.

19 Jul 2020These Words Must Be on Your Heart (2014) feat. Riley Rossi01:00:02

This Jehovah's Witness cinematic masterpiece is about a family falling apart as each member strays farther from the Truth. Most notably, teen son Marcus becomes a famous hiphop producer, and starts hanging around people who smoke extremely shitty weed. This well-paced and well-acted film contains all the trademarks of JW filmmaking, including a sharp critique of energy-draining work culture. Jehovah said fuck work! Our guide through this movie is Riley Rossi, a talented and accomplished music producer (neotenomie, rook&nomie), who grew up in the faith and is very knowledgeable about JW teachings and values.

12 Dec 2021An American Carol (2008)01:38:48

You’ve heard of Christmas in July, but what about… July in Christmas? Conservative comedy film AN AMERICAN CAROL riffs on the classic Dickens tale to tell a story about a “Scrooge” type who wants to ban the 4th of July. Protagonist Michael Malone is a thinly veiled sendup of leftist documentarian Michael Moore. Watch as he praises Cuba’s healthcare system, but believes that 9/11 was the result of poor foreign policy decisions by the United States. He also opposes war at any cost. How could anyone be so cruel, callous, and detached? Three American spirits visit Michael and attempt to stop him from misusing his freedom of speech. David Zucker, co-director of all-time classic comedies such as AIRPLANE! and THE NAKED GUN, uses his impeccable sense of comedic timing to bring actual jokes to a conservative comedy film. It’s very rare that we get to have any genuine laughs watching these, but we do laugh during this, so we must give credit where credit is due. This rare occurrence makes AN AMERICAN CAROL by default the best conservative comedy ever made, but the bar is extremely low. Ultimately, this film is very racist and stupid. Even a true genius like Zucker can’t rescue AN AMERICAN CAROL from sinking into the Reflecting Pool of its own ideology.

It’s been about two years since the bizarre death of Gwen Shamblin Lara and her husband Joe Lara in a private plane crash in June 2021, but media coverage of the two charismatic Christians is only just now coming to a climax with the release of dueling films profiling the pair. HBO has a new documentary, but we focus on Lifetime’s GWEN SHAMBLIN: STARVING FOR SALVATION, which stars Jennifer Grey (DIRTY DANCING, FERRIS BUELER’S DAY OFF) in the lead role as Gwen, covering her life’s journey from housewife to cult leader. We at Boys’ Bible Study previously covered Gwen ourselves back in 2021, learning about her extensive and specific theories on how you can replace gluttonous urges with prayer. Her most famous theory is that one must wait for “The Growl”, a stomach growl which sometimes requires fasting as long as 36 hours at a time to truly experience. STARVING FOR SALVATION doesn’t get too deeply into the content of Gwen’s teachings, but the film is impressively researched and entertaining as it recreates the harrowing atmosphere of a southern belle cult leader who exerts total control over the dogma (and diets) of her congregation. Watch as Gwen and Joe go shopping for a private plane to add to their tacky, opulent estate — the same plane that would later come crashing down in a Tennessee lake, bringing an abrupt end to Gwen’s reign over Remnant Fellowship. The Church lives on, and has even issued a harsh press statement denouncing Lifetime’s biopic, but they should be grateful! GWEN SHAMBLIN: STARVING FOR SALVATION is not a flattering portrait, but we think Gwen would enjoy seeing her legacy live on in such an entertaining and, dare we say, “iconic” way.

A “satanic panic” documentary that has become a cult favorite among outsider video fans for its campy yet surprisingly thorough research - HELL’S BELLS teaches you how AC/DC, John Lennon, Madonna, Hall & Oates, Sonic Youth, and others are all working together with Anton LaVey and Aleister Crowley to kill God and destroy the minds of young people in the process. Host Eric Holmberg of Reel to Real Ministries soberly stares at the camera while playing “Stairway to Heaven” backwards and teaches you that the music of Iron Maiden directly inspired ritual child murder. Returning guest Bret Berg of popular weekly found footage Twitch show Museum of Home Video is our knowledgeable guide into the evils of pop culture, and convinces us to never listen to rock music ever again.

10 Jul 2022Halloween Candymare (2019)00:56:23

Happy Halloween in July! We’ve chosen to abstain from celebrating Halloween due to the fact that it was invented by witches to talk to the dead. Still, we have a job to do. Inspiring us to remain true to our convictions regarding the shadow realm is our favorite homeschool family, the Wrights. Led by parents Ashley Hays Wright and David Owen Wright, the Wrights and their three daughters function as an accomplished low budget Christian film production company. From what we can assume about them based on the details we learn from their films and social media, the Wrights homeschool their daughters, and use this instructional time to work together to create family friendly films with a uniquely Christian message. The Wrights stand out within the Christian film scene for their apparent love of horror — creepy themes such as ghosts or bigfoot seem to be a common theme throughout their body of work. The involvement of their young daughters also makes the Wright films very unique. The Wright sisters’ childlike sense of storytelling creates genuinely surprising and delightful moments. David Lynch famously invokes Transcendental Meditation to dive deep within his subconscious to invoke the signs and symbols that make his films powerful — the Wright sisters are inherently able to do this via their precociously limitless imaginations. Making the godly choice to boycott Halloween candy has never seemed so fun!

It all started when Ashley Hays Wright accidentally brought an occult book into her home that was somehow mixed in a box of Christian books she bought on Craigslist. In doing so, she opened a “doorway” for demonic influence in her life that went as far as to possess her eldest daughter. Fortunately, the Hays Wright family lived to tell the tale, now immortalized in their feature film THE EXORCISM IN AMARILLO, in which the family portrays themselves as they reenact this dark period in their lives. With a massive body of work spanning at least 10 features and just as many short films, TV specials, and documentaries, the Hays Wrights have proven themselves to be the hardest working family in Christian showbiz. They are also a unique voice in Christian film because they are unafraid to tackle supernatural and horror elements in their work, making them perfect to spotlight for our October rundown of Christian thrillers. But in all of their prolific filmography, THE EXORCISM IN AMARILLO stands out as one of their creepiest statements. Why? Because it proves that Christian horror can hit close to home when you let the wrong art into your life.

10 Mar 2024The Boy Who Saw Christ (2023)01:33:54

What would you do if Christ hugged you in the church bathroom? Eight-year-old Kenneth immediately tells his parents, expecting them to be delighted, only to see them freak out and interrupt the entire church service to try to investigate who exactly is the man who hugged their son in the bathroom. It’s actually a pretty natural reaction, but we’re so used to faith-based films about magical Christ-like children wowing the grownups in their lives with barely any pushback on their stories that we were shocked that this molestation investigation arc took up a good portion of the plot of THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST. This is the first film we’ve watched by director Kenya Cagle, but it will absolutely not be the last. Mr. Cagle is a singular auteur with a fascinating style and a bizarre website where you can buy a duffel bag with his film posters printed on it for $80. His vision is powerful and comes through despite his technical limitations; in fact he is able to use his resources well to tell a complex story of divine apparitions, resurrections from the dead, mental illness, and preaching the Word to Muslims with nothing more than a digital camera and some devoted actors. We decided to review THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST solely based on its compelling title and amazing cover art, but it instantly became one of our new favorite films.

A six-part multimedia program that “empowers parents to have healthy, ongoing conversations with their kids about love, sex, and relationships”, THE WHOLE SEX TALK is a confusing mess of mixed messages about the subject matter paired with animation that is literally hard to watch because the motion graphic design hurts the eyes. Contemporary Christian sex ed struggles with maintaining a “cool” dispassionate tone that might appeal to teens while still hammering them with the same broad, strict rules that have become synonymous with Christian culture. This series, released as recently as 2018, heavily promotes abstinence and takes the tone that homosexuality is simply not okay - it’s anti-Christian and must be “struggled with”. Ultimately, the biggest flaw of this series is its insistence that something so inherently messy as sexual desire can be explained with tidy categories, such as a silly list of “the 8 steps of a physical relationship” (Step 7: Intimate Touch with Clothes On).

30 Oct 2022Spirits Among Us (2009)01:14:09

A key to understanding Christian horror films is to remember that the demonic possessions and devilish hauntings the films depict could actually happen to you and your family. SPIRITS AMONG US is a delightful low-budget flick from one-time director Ray Jenkins which shows that even demons you yourself didn’t summon can still impact your life. In the film, a Christian family moves into a home that they didn’t realize was formerly the site of satanic rituals. Although Mark, Janice and their daughter Julie are devout Christians with a perfect, loving family dynamic, the residual effects of these terrible ceremonies are ruining their lives. Poltergeist activity starts to develop, centering on a creepy ventriloquist dummy that Mark owns for some reason. In the end, it’s only consulting with a pastor that cleanses the family of their previous tenants’ sins. Fortunately for us, the pastor character gives us a step by step guide for how to rid our own homes of evil. Remember, these demons are just like those you might battle in real life as a Christian, so pay attention! And thank you for spending your Halloween season with us instead of out there “trick or treating” with fallen souls in this dark, secular world.

It’s a film by Stephens, for Stephens! Directed by Stephen Yake and written by Steve Cleary, STEPHEN’S TEST OF FAITH is the story of a young boy named Stephen who meets his namesake - Biblical martyr Saint Stephen - after his faith is mocked in school by his godless classmates. That night, he dreams he is timehopping through disparate eras, communing with martyrs throughout history. He learns that many people have had to suffer in order to create the opportunities for Christians that exist today. He realizes that to deny Christ is to deny his place in heaven, even if there is a proverbial (or literal) gun pointed to his head. Everyone knows: the only thing better than having to go to Sunday school as a kid is being told you should be prepared to die for it!

17 Apr 2022Easter Special 2022!01:18:34

EASTER DREAM (1990) + THE PASSION: A BRICKFILM (2018) + JEHOVAH WITNESSES - SHOULD CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE EASTER (Web, 2014) + AN EASTER BUNNY PUPPY [TRAILER] (2013)

He is risen! Is Easter Sunday one of the holiest and most treasured days of the Christian calendar, or does it represent a corruption of the church by pagan values meant to expose our kids to dangerous sex magick? We’ve selected a diverse program of films to help us grapple with this spiritual crisis. Our discussion begins with a handwritten letter the Jehovah’s Witnesses sent to Bible Boy Scott to invite him to their “Memorial for Christ’s Death” — a non-celebratory Easter alternative by the strictest of the Christian sects. Eager to know more, we watched one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ insane, text-heavy video slideshows to learn about Easter’s pagan origins. We were shocked by this new information, but as media researchers, we’d be remiss to not explore different perspectives. Next we go to the Mormons, who offer one of their trademark schmaltzy, glittering, and sentimental takes on the resurrection with a family-friendly VHS tape called EASTER DREAM. We combined this with a more typically Protestant, yet decidedly atypical Easter story — Christian LEGO enthusiast Josh Carroll’s notorious THE PASSION: A BRICKFILM, which uses LEGOs and copious amounts of fake blood to bring the dark story of Christ’s death to the playroom floor. Finally,.we splurge on a demented, fully secular Easter romp: AN EASTER BUNNY PUPPY by David DeCoteau. DeCoteau is one of our favorite filmmakers of all time, so we take great pleasure in finally introducing our gentle listeners to his bizarre body of work. We hope this Easter Special will entertain while providing a sober reminder about spiritual vigilance on this controversial holiday.

23 Aug 2020Overcomer (2019) feat. Nathan Faustyn of Loose Meat01:00:55

The Kendrick brothers are some of the most accomplished Christian filmmakers, easily in league with other greats such as Kirk Cameron and Kevin Sorbo. We review the Kendricks’ most recent film in which a Christian high school cuts all their sports teams except for cross country for some reason, even though only one girl is participating. This teen athlete, Hannah, is on a troubled life path until she gets saved by God thanks to support from her coaches, principal, and a mysterious blind man who turns out to be her long lost father. Our Christian jock friend Nathan Faustyn of comedy team Loose Meat joins us to watch this film, which in and of itself was a feat mental endurance comparable to running a 5k.

12 Nov 2023The Defense of New Haven (2016)01:09:18

This Christian film with a steampunk aesthetic is notable for its cast made up entirely of kids. Joel and Lisa Steege and their seven children create films as Little Crew Studios. Their most recent work is 2016’s THE DEFENSE OF NEW HAVEN, an adventure story set in a fictional society where masked Raiders are sowing chaos and disappearing innocent civilians. When protagonist Alec is caught in the crossfire and his younger sister goes missing, he insists on joining the CDF (City Defense Force), even though his disability makes him an unlikely fighter. Intrigue and adventure follow Alec and his new colleagues, including journeys through hidden underground tunnels and nautical battles on mini steamboats. Something genuinely impressive about the Steeges’ productions is that they construct their entire sets on their property. Parents and kids work together to create elaborate cityscapes and real bodies of water big enough to film boat scenes. Joel and Lisa Steege are so dedicated to their productions that Joel quit his job to pursue the family film business full time. The Steege children rise to the level of the production with their acting ability; they must be extremely smart and well spoken to be able to deliver such complicated lines. However, listening to kids dispense nonstop steampunk lore in a monotonous childlike timbre gets really tedious after about 15 minutes. Still, a society that truly recognizes talent and drive in the arts would automatically vote to allocate $100 million to allow the Steeges to create their magnum opus in the chibi Christian genre.

14 May 2023The Story of Mother's Day (2021)01:32:48

Happy Mother’s Day! We celebrate with this recent film from director Jason Campbell (THE MAN WHO WENT TO HEAVEN, NUN NANCY, and many more) that explores not only the historical origin of Mother’s Day, but also the many types of moms that a random troupe of high school theater kids might experience. These include: Rich Mom, Foster Mom, Pill Addict Mom, Alcoholic Mom, Cancer Mom, and Caring Mom Who Works Late. Our protagonists are on a journey to write and direct an original school play that pays homage to the moms who love and traumatize them on a daily basis, but can they secure funding from the school principal, who happens to be portrayed by legendary SUPERMAN actor Dean Cain? Things don’t turn out quite the way the kids expect, but they all learn an important lesson along the way: no matter how dysfunctional your family is, God made them for you that way, so you’ve simply got to love them!

03 Dec 2023Doreen Virtue Debunks "The Secret" TEASER00:07:13

Doreen Virtue is a fascinating Christian influencer considering she initially rose to cultural prominence as a popular New Age author, publishing over 50 books from the 1990s-2010s. Her work had a spiritual focus on angels, however from a non-denominational New Age perspective; “angel numbers”, direct contact with “personal angels”, and drawing upon angelic energies to heal are recurring concepts in Virtue’s oeuvre. Her life trajectory changed in 2017, when something amazing happened: Virtue saw God’s light and was baptized into the Episcopal Church, effectively leaving behind the entire body of work that made her famous enough for national TV appearances on shows like Oprah. But was this revelation a career killer? Not at all! The enterprising businesswoman that she is, Doreen Virtue managed to turn this abrupt spiritual pivot into a successful youtube channel, continued forays into publishing (this time on Christian concepts), and even an extremely entertaining meme page. We at Boys’ Bible Study have been wanting to cover Virtue’s work for a while; we finally decided it would be most interesting to hear her takes on the New Age economy that got her paid in the first place. In a Sept. 2023 youtube upload, Virtue and Christian author/influencer Jon Clash filmed their conversation about the lies behind the doctrine of “The Secret” or “The Law of Attraction”, the popular New Age concept that our thoughts become actions and can change the universe. Being fascinated ourselves with the bizarre personalities profiled in THE SECRET (2006) documentary, we thought it would be fascinating to hear the once-reigning queen of New Age spill the tea on all her former scene cohorts. In this bonus episode, we use Doreen Virtue’s spiritual expertise to give us new ammo to take down the dreaded “Secret”, and we ponder whether Virtue’s pivot to Christianity was a sincere plot twist or an extremely well thought-out, cynical cash grab. Either way, we (the Christian content consumers) are the real winners.

09 Feb 2020I Believe (2017)00:47:23

The Three Wise Boys (Ash, Scott & Julian) are back to tell you about a film that we now consider one of the all-time best in the Christian genre. I Believe (2017) is like the Harry Potter of Christianity. A precocious, bespectacled boy performs real, actual miracles that stun the entire city of Los Angeles, as the Italian mafia and a gaggle of atheist newscasters look on in wonderment. It's also the only Christian film we've seen so far that has full-fledged body horror moments.

07 Aug 2022Voodoo Academy (2000) feat. Trans Regret Snoopy01:14:48

Six strapping young male virgins enroll in a mysterious, exclusive Bible college led by the intimidating Rev. Carmichael. His sect, the “Neurocystic Christianity Church”, preaches that advanced technology will bring the human race closer to God consciousness. His pièce de résistance is an electromagnetic confessional that doesn’t just forgive sins — it harvests soul energy for an insidious purpose. It’s a very ambitious exposition considering most of the film is just long shots of the boys writhing around in matching white designer underwear. This cinematic vision could only come from the mind of one man — director David DeCoteau, who has 177 directing credits to his name in genres such as gay softcore porn, straight softcore porn, kids’ movies, and Lifetime movies. The range! Here to help us try to make sense of the theological backbone of Neurocystic Christianity is none other than Trans Regret Snoopy, a regularly appearing guest of ours who really knows her scripture and usually does not go out of her way to watch smut.

07 Jun 2020Heaven Is for Real (2014) feat. David Allen of Loose Meat01:08:31

BASED ON A TRUE STORY ~ Colton Burpo was just a normal 4-year-old until his appendix ruptured. While in the hospital, he had a near death experience and visited actual Heaven, but came back to Earth to tell us about it. His story captivated the world, leading to a best-selling book that would eventually be adapted into this film in 2014. Our friend David of comedy team Loose Meat is an expert on this film because he once completely re-edited it in a way that turned the inspirational tearjerker into an ominous piece of claustrophobic family horror. Today June 7 2020 at 5PM PST we will be livestreaming this re-edit for all Boys' Bible Study patreon subscribers.

08 Sep 2024Switched (2020)01:34:26

Body swapping is a time-honored film trope, especially in family-friendly inspirational comedies, where a character might “wish upon a star” to switch lives with someone who makes them jealous. Since God can make anything possible through prayer, Christian genre films are a perfect fit for this concept. SWITCHED lulls its audience into a false sense of security by beginning as one might expect a Christian teen body swap movie to go: a socially anxious Christian girl named Cassandra prays her school bully, the famous social media influencer Katie, could experience a day in the lives of her bullying victims. The two girls awaken the next morning in each others’ bodies, and the high jinks begin in school as both must train each other to carry out their their day-to-day lives without being able to explain their unbelievable circumstances. Katie must learn how to play folk guitar for a Julliard audition; Cassandra is now interviewing for a prestigious influencer position on “The Glam Slam”. It’s cute in theory, but SWITCHED ultimately fails because of some bizarre plot choices. Although aiming for originality is admirable, why would Cassandra (who is now inhabited by Katie’s soul) flirt with her own biological brother? Why would Katie’s parents (portrayed in celebrity cameo roles by John Schneider and Denise Richards) be so lackadaisical about Katie’s influencer career, even though they quit their jobs to support her work? SWITCHED is full of delightfully campy moments, like the UI of fictitious social media network The Social, but its desire to be perceived as easily watchable family fare that is light on the Christian message is thwarted by a confusing story that doesn’t stick the landing.

From the twisted mind of shot on video (SOV) horror filmmaker Tim Ritter comes… an explicitly Christian film? Yes — the writer and director behind such SOV horror classics as TRUTH OR DARE and CREEP made a film with unironically Christian messaging, including allusions to Bible verses and reenactments of Bible stories, all delivered with the drama you’d expect of a low budget slasher film. In the film, Paul is a devout Christian plagued with recurring nightmares oF dragons destroying churches. He’s also busy trying to convince his comatose brother, Franklin, to renounce his sinful ways and accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Meanwhile, in Franklin’s inner world, we relive his memories of pounding bottles of Goldschläger as he drives up dirt roads, pursuing his ex-wife with the plan of murdering her. A mysterious hitchhiker befriends Franklin and joins his adventure, but it soon becomes clear that this man is no mere mortal. He knows all of Franklin’s secrets and he is capable of magical feats, such as immortality and the manifestation of biblical plagues. The charm of RECONCILED THROUGH THE CHRIST is its reframing of Christian stories through a horror lens. The Bible is full of themes of violence, body horror, and pestilence that would be right at home in gothic imagery. RECONCILED THROUGH THE CHRIST doesn’t editorialize these stories — it takes them at face value, allowing viewers an intimate, visceral view of the Bible with all the gooey special effects it deserves. Despite being an undeniably campy film, RECONCILED THROUGH THE CHRIST is artistically powerful enough to jumpscare the fear of God directly into your heart.

22 Sep 2024The Forge (2024)01:36:15

The newest film by the legendary Kendrick brothers, currently playing in theaters, feels impeccably focus-grouped for maximum impact of a Christian movie in 2024. We’re not surprised that director Alex Kendrick and producer Stephen Kendrick were able to create another competent and successful Christian film. They have a history of huge box office success stories on relatively low budgets, including WAR ROOM (2015) which notably became the #1 film in America during its second week of release. On a reported budget of $5 million, THE FORGE has already grossed $26 million in its first month, which is huge in the faith-based genre. THE FORGE seems like a spiritual sequel to WAR ROOM; it casts a lot of the same actors from WAR ROOM in extremely similar roles, including Priscilla Shirer (daughter of mega-church pastor Tony Evans) as a strong but exasperated mother struggling with family issues. In THE FORGE, newcomer Aspen Kennedy plays recent high school graduate Isaiah Wright, a directionless 19-year-old without a father who is unemployed and seems to have no passions in life beyond video games and basketball. When he gets a part time job at local business Moore Fitness, CEO Joshua Moore (played by Cameron Arnett) takes Isaiah under his wing and becomes the father he never had. With the help of an exclusive Christian men’s club called “The Forge”, Isaiah finally feels motivation to become the man he has always wanted to be. But unspoken in the film’s plot is how the setting of THE FORGE, Moore Fitness, is meant to resemble an Amazon fulfillment warehouse. THE FORGE attempts to bring dignity and motivation to fulfillment center employees through an unimaginable plot line where Isaiah and his coworkers volunteer to work a 24 hour shift to save the company. Sadly, this feels laughably out of touch for a film that otherwise does an eerily good job of elevating the mundane of an everyday Christian’s life in today’s fallen world.

01 May 2022If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? (1971)01:10:57

At the intersection of Christian propaganda and exploitation filmmaking sits IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? Director Ron Ormand made his career in action-packed B movies until he survived a plane crash that changed the course of his life and career. He found God and began making Christian films instead. He formed a creative partnership with Mississippi-based Baptist minister Estus Pirkle, and the two men co-created a trilogy of spiritual propaganda films that are beloved to this day for being some of the most dramatic, colorful, and lurid examples of Christian cinema ever made. Many Christian films want to use the language of cinema to show the horror of the sinful, secular world — few are actually directed by someone with the skill level to create a truly disturbing scene. This is used to great effect in FOOTMEN, set in a not-so-distant future, where Cuban Communists have killed the United States president and instilled their socialist agenda on once free American soil. The Communists are sadistic beasts who live to kill. They mass execute innocent churchgoers for fun, and in one particularly gruesome scene, they torture a young Christian boy by puncturing his eardrums with bamboo sticks while he vomits profusely. It’s by far the most explicitly horrifying sequence we’ve encountered in a film that is unequivocally Christian in its scope. But the scariest part about FOOTMEN is, of course, that it could happen here! Estus Pirkle address the camera directly while he tells his viewers that the scenes depicted in the film are already happening presently in countries such as China, Russia, and Cuba. This exhilarating call to action, drenched in copious amounts of neon red blood, makes IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? one of the most memorable and genuinely entertaining examples of Christian propaganda ever made.

06 Sep 2020The ButterCream Gang (1992)01:06:10

Our most requested film to review is this sentimental drama about a “gang” of adolescent do-gooders who become estranged from their friend who spends some time away from the idyllic suburbs in the big bad city. The ButterCream Gang work a paper route, play baseball, know every adult in town, and somehow do the work of an entire police force on an average day. Meanwhile, their former friend Pete just wants to commit petty theft and start small fires. A rift grows between these two points of view, but it’s nothing that God, racial profiling, and a lot of passive aggression can’t fix.

09 Feb 2025Touched by an Angel s8e8 "Heaven's Portal" feat. Woodrow White01:39:21

Prayer, Love, Unity, Respect: in this topical episode of popular 90s/y2k era TV drama TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, angel-in-training Gloria goes to a rave and actually does ecstasy with the human teen boy she’s supposed to be protecting. Raves were a huge point of anxiety in pop culture in the y2k era. Although their colorful futurism and utopian optimism inspired a generation of media and fashion, people also had safety concerns about the newfound popularity of club drugs like ecstasy, leading to a large-scale moral panic. In the U.S. in 2003, then-Senator Joe Biden co-sponsored the RAVE Act (Reducing American’s Vulnerability to Ecstasy) aimed at bringing harsh legal punishment not just to drug dealers but also party promotors. It’s no wonder then that the writers of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL felt they had to get the angels to mission to ravers directly: rave media is great fodder for exploitation, titillating with radical imagery only to deliver an anti-fun message. In HEAVEN’S PORTAL, angels Tess, Monica, Andrew, and Gloria meet a teen named Nick who is upset with his parents’ separation and has taken to smoking weed and looking at websites about techno. When he gets info about rave 40 miles away, he drives there with the gullible Gloria, who was only crated by God recently and knows little about the world. Immediately, friendly ravers in silly costumes hand them pills to try. What happens when an angel takes ecstasy? Does the world end? We invite our good friend Woodrow White, an artist and scholar of rave-themed media, to return to the show to debate moral dilemmas about raves, pleasure, and sin.

This October, we once again strive to guide you down the righteous path by exposing you to wholesome media that still satisfies the natural human fascination with the macabre. First up? Edward Furlong (Terminator 2, Detroit Rock City, etc.) stars in the film adaptation of THE VISITATION, a book by preeminent Christian supernatural fiction author Frank Peretti. Any appreciator of Christian pop culture should know about Peretti, whose thrillers have lined the shelves of many a church library from the 80s onward. It’s obvious that Peretti sees his work as cinematic, since he takes a great interest in film adaptations of his books. He’s co-produced, co-written, and even acted in films such as HANGMAN’S CURSE (2004), another Peretti-sourced story which we’ve previously covered on our show. THE VISITATION takes advantage of Edward Furlong’s charmingly creepy drawl by casting him as a mysterious small town stranger named Brandon who stuns the community by performing Christlike signs and miracles. But as Dark Brandon’s disturbing motivations unfold, it becomes clear that his power comes not from God — but from a force far, far more sinister.

16 Oct 2022Cigarette Burns (2005)01:23:18

We apply our Protestant work ethic to our jobs as semi-Christian film critics whose task this week is to investigate the religious themes of John Carpenter’s brilliant CIGARETTE BURNS, an hour-long piece Carpenter created for the MASTERS OF HORROR anthology TV series in the mid-2000s. In the film, struggling independent movie theater owner Kirby (Norman Reedus) is tasked by an eccentric film collector to track down LA FIN ABSOLUE DU MONDE. This film-within-a-film is the most rare, dark and transgressive piece of media ever made — it depicts the torture and dismemberment of a real angel. To desecrate something so holy is the ultimate sin, and to capture such a sin on film is to create a moving image so powerful that even simply pursuing a copy of the film causes Kirby to suffer terrifying hallucinations. Anyone who actually watches LA FIN rarely survives, but if Kirby can retrieve the only copy of the film, he’ll make enough money to pay off all of his earthly debts. John Carpenter builds this story about a Faustian bargain to an absolutely terrifying payoff. CIGARETTE BURNS is both a love letter to transgressive cinema and an inventive remix of Christian cosmology, so obviously it’s one of our pet favorite films and something we’ve been looking forward to covering during our month-long look at Christian horror. We discuss spiritual trauma, our personal experiences being deflowered by shock cinema, and “the coming attractions of the soul”.

04 Oct 2020Sting: Moment of Truth (2004) feat. Dom Moschitti and Sean Muscles01:22:28

This biopic of legendary professional wrestler Sting, real name Steve Borden, tells the story of his career from the very beginning up until his fateful come-to-Jesus moment that transformed him into a born-again Christian. Sting has since acted in several Christian movies, including a Boys' Bible Study personal favorite The Encounter (2010) that was a subject of one of our earlier episodes, and we as a podcast regard as one of the best Christian films ever made. Two of our dear friends who are wrestling experts join us for this discussion: Dom Moschitti, the creator behind Paperback Paradise and Blank Tapes Pod, and Sean Muscles, illustrator and comics artist who drew the Boys' Bible Study official show art. We cover Sting's life story as well as several instances of Christianity as an artistic motif in the mythology of professional wrestling.

25 Jul 2021A Christian Carol (2016)01:21:07

It’s Christmas in July! Following our traditional gift exchange, we plunge into this exquisitely edited hour-long holiday offering from Faith Leap Films. It’s pretty obvious from the title that this is yet another take on the Dickens story. Carol is a horrible #girlboss who forbids Christmas cheer at the office, and forces her employees to pay to use the communal coffee machine. Can three Biblical spirits bring her back to her senses? But the moment this film feels like it could get predictable, it goes into spectacularly unexpected directions - musical numbers, family tragedy, and even a terrifying vision of the apocalypse, played out using sinisterly glittering CGI effects. A CHRISTIAN CAROL may be based on a legend we’ve heard a million times, but it looks like nothing else.

Jon is a pastor whose spiritual outbursts during church, such as shouting and running around the aisles, have made him the outcast of his congregation. After mass complaints, he is reassigned to shepherd a new flock. But imagine Jon’s surprise when he (a white man) gets to his new assignment only to learn he’ll be leading a historically black church. Members of his new congregation are either bemused or outright concerned by the cultural difference, but Jon quickly earns their trust through his open displays of spiritual ecstasy, which allow him to fit right in to a community where “shoutin’” is the norm when the spirit moves you. What follows is a fascinating and honestly quite wholesome story about culture shock that turns into mutual cultural appreciation. Of course we went into it with the worst of expectations for how this type of story would be handled, given the usual tenor of the mostly white and conservative films that tend to find us in our quest to watch every Christian film ever made. The perspective of black filmmakers and actors lent depth and sincerity to this story that could have gone very badly in the wrong hands. It was still pretty hilarious that Jon’s original church basically kicked him out for being “too black” for them. However, sometimes a fun fish-out-of-water story can just be a charming and silly film without having to ruin it by overthinking.

07 Apr 2024This Is Our Time (2013)01:29:03

A Christian millennial melodrama that is equal parts snarky and depressing, THIS IS OUR TIME is a love letter from director Lisa Arnold to the dreamers who graduated college in 2012 with wide eyes and a twitter account and tried to make a name for themselves. Five friends each leave college with greatly different career prospects; Ethan feels shame about being stuck in a sandwich shop while his high-achieving friends Ryder and Kate land high-powered entry level business careers, and his sister Alé and her husband Luke move to India to do outreach missionary work for children with leprosy. When Alé is randomly hit by a car and dies (the most Christian film plot point ever) the friends must reassess their dreams amidst the sobering daylight of reality. They begin a “viral” social media campaign to raise funds for Embrace A Village, a real life charitable organization that seems to have sponsored the film in some way, confusingly blending fiction and reality. THIS IS OUR TIME is an aggressively 2010s film that puts a Christian flair on millennial stereotypes of lattes, iPhones, and the concept of “adulting”. The film conclusively proves that millennials who were seniors in college in the year 2012 are some of the most annoying people to ever walk the earth.

25 Oct 2020Paranormal (2009) feat. Joey Gallimore01:08:13

From the director of Pray and Pray 2.5 comes another Christian horror film with a night vision twist. PARANORMAL weaves storylines of ghost hunters investigating a haunted asylum in the style of Blair Witch, while a skeptical novelist has a terrifying experience with a ouija board that leads him to seek help from a pastor who is knowledgeable in the supernatural. Our guest Joey Gallimore of horror blog Camera Viscera joins us for an in-depth review and a read-through of the official bible study guide that accompanies the film.

We are sorry to report that a new mainstream figure in pop culture has gone fully satanic. “Doja Cat” (you can’t make this stuff up, folks) seems to have undergone some sort of Masonic initiation on her 27th birthday and emerged with a new mission to normalize devils, demons, and “spiritual spouses” to a culture that laps it up like dogs. People love demons so much, in fact, that Doja Cat’s single “Paint the Town Red”, which contains troubling lyrics such as “Mmm, she a devil,” broke Spotify streaming records and quickly became a Billboard number one hit. Doja Cat then released follow-up single “Demons”, in which she hints that she is a “puppet” and a “cash cow” for the illuminati to use to inflict their godless and soul-crushing message on the impressionable public. We know that our gentle listeners are as disturbed by these developments as we are, so we took the pulse of our Christian podcasting community to find some constructive solutions to combat dark cultural influence. We react to videos by luminaries such as Ben Shapiro, FLF, Armor of God, and our new favorite Christian youtuber Tailah, who drops some knowledge on us about the way demons can enter into your soul while you are sleeping to give you perverted dreams. This is the newest episode in our ongoing series chronicling contemporary satanic panic. Our conclusion: keep panicking!

17 Nov 2024Joshua and the Promised Land (2003)01:22:15

This amateur but ambitious work of CGI animation has developed a cult following online for its bizarre aesthetics. JOSHUA AND THE PROMISED LAND is the passion project of animator Jim Lion. Coincidentally (or not?) all of the heroic characters in the film are anthropomorphic lions. The film centers around Joshua, a young lion living in modern times. His bickering parents ask him to get out of the way as they prepare dinner, so Joshua goes to his room and uses his vivid childlike imagination and the powers of his imaginary best friend Chris (a floating dog made out of TV static) to warp back in time to the Old Testament era. Joshua and Chris meet Moses and join his wandering band of Israelites in the desert hunting for the Promised Land, and protagonist Joshua becomes the Joshua of the Bible, mentored by Moses to take over leadership of the Israelites after Moses’s death. Joshua rises to the challenge and prepares for battle with the walled city of Jericho, one of the most famous Old Testament stories from Joshua 6. Jim Lion built a legitimately fascinating visual world of CGI for these famous bible characters to inhabit. The smooth, simple polygons and bright colors of Lion’s visual language are a powerful tool for communicating the surreal awe of Old Testament stories. The Old Testament is very hard to depict visually because the huge scope of its supernatural stories of death and destruction don’t get a lot of breathing room within the Bible’s terse, compact prose. It’s obvious that JOSHUA AND THE PROMISED LAND is not an “accurate” depiction of these happenings, but the film does faithfully translate how seeing these events unfold with your own eyes would completely break your brain.

20 Aug 2023What If... (2010)01:24:15

Join us live in Los Angeles as Boys' Bible Study and American Cinematheque present... LET THERE BE LIGHT (2017) on Sun., Aug 27 at 10pm. Advance tickets on sale now!

Every so often, God calls upon you to watch a movie that makes you reexamine the big milestones of decision-making in your life, such as, “What if… I never hosted a Christian film podcast?” WHAT IF… is a Christian romantic drama about guardian angels and alternate timelines that would feel right at home in the 1990s trend of secular/faith-based crossover media such as TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL. However, WHAT IF… was made two decades after this angelic era, and by a very consequential team of directors, writers and producers who would soon go on to achieve great success in the faith-based film genre. Director Dallas Jenkins (son of LEFT BEHIND co-creator Jerry B. Jenkins) would go on to direct THE CHOSEN, the hugely popular contemporary Christian TV series about the ministry of Jesus. Writers Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon would go on to create the consequential GOD’S NOT DEAD series just a few years after the release of WHAT IF…. Finally, WHAT IF… co-producer David A.R. White (already a famous name in the genre) and star Kevin Sorbo would soon be the lead actors in GOD’S NOT DEAD, cementing their respective statuses as the contemporary titans of Christian film. WHAT IF… stars Kevin Sorbo perfectly in his favorite typecast role of a ruthless, worldly atheist. In this case, his character Ben Walker leaves his relationship with his devoutly Christian high school sweetheart Wendy (Kristy Swanson) to start a new life in the big city as a rich and successful investment banker. Sounds great, but something must be missing… right? Right? Right!? Guardian angel “Mike the Angel” (John Ratzenberger) is sent by God to dispatch Ben to a more wholesome realm, where he never left Wendy and he gets to experience the richness of family life. Through Ben’s eyes, we learn that love is more important than money… but money definitely helps a lot!

03 Oct 2021The Girl Who Believes in Miracles (2021)01:26:31

Happy birthday Kevin Sorbo! The legendary Christian genre film actor turned 63 last week, so we celebrate his career by watching one of his most recent performances. THE GIRL WHO BELIEVES IN MIRACLES is an audacious new Christian movie that force feeds us every single cliche we’ve come to know and expect from the genre. Yes, the innocent little girl’s childlike faith is powerful enough to literally make blind people see. Yes, the local news is so anxious to exploit her story that they risk ruining her life. Yes, Kevin Sorbo plays a man who turned into an atheist because his son died. It’s all here! But we were shocked to discover that THE GIRL WHO BELIEVES IN MIRACLES takes it one step further by daring to show us an imaginative depiction of what God could actually look like. Few filmmakers are bold enough to make this attempt. Despite its questionable opinions about topics such as prayer, health, birth, and death, we simply must salute this film for going all the way.

Hello to all of the beautiful kings and queens listening to our podcast. This one’s for you. Ever since we watched director Kenya Cagle’s magnum opus THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST, we’re committed to exploring the rest of his Caglevision catalog. Our next pick is MY KING, a romantic thriller about a Christian couple engaged to be married and the evil forces conspiring to keep them apart. Andrea works a high level job at Synray, a company that doesn’t seem to do anything other than maintain a stressful office atmosphere. Andrea’s boss, Mr. Pierre, is an old flame who may have once drugged and sexually assaulted her at a college party. Her only workplace confidante Miriam may have been complicit in the assault and even selected the roofie that drugged Andrea (???). Andrea’s fiancé Alfred has struggles of his own, between his millionaire parents who don’t support his relationship and the fact that quarantine has made it hard for him to find a job. When Alfred is mysteriously recruited to be Andrea’s coworker at Synray, it seems like that should be the end of the couple’s troubles, but it’s actually the beginning of a twisted game that threatens to ruin their lives forever. Kenya Cagle is the master of plot escalation and MY KING is a deceptively slow burn that builds to a genuinely insane climax. Caglevision films are not for the faint of heart — only for those of royal taste and regal temperament.

This classic Christian variety show hosted by the legendary Blaine Bartel was filmed in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1986-1993. Released on home video with subscription services available to churches and youth groups, the program featured skits, musical guests, and a recurring sitcom feature called Family First. We watched an episode from Sept. 1989 "Jesus, Tougher Than Nails" which Scott had previously edited in a video for Everything Is Terrible. In the episode we learn that Jesus was very tough and DEFINITELY NOT GAY.

20 Sep 2020Touched by an Angel S8E5 "Chutzpah" (2001) feat. Alec Robbins01:04:24

The long-running CBS drama Touched by an Angel spanned nine seasons in almost a decade. We tuned in to its later period and found this ideologically confusing gem of an episode in which a young Jewish cartoonist lashes out at her father by drawing anti-Semitic caricatures of him in the local paper. Her comic gets hugely popular, and everything seems fine until the wrong crowd misses the irony and adopts her comic strip as a banner of hate. Fortunately, the angelic pantheon that is Tess, Monica, and Gloria are there to diffuse the situation and heal the relationship between father and daughter. Joining us in the synagogue is our dear friend Alec Robbins, the creator of popular webcomic "Mr. Boop", who helps us examine the great power held by the medium of comics.

28 Jul 2024The Grim Reaper (1976)01:17:47

This lurid and captivating film about a family besieged by demons after attempting to contact their deceased loved one via an occultist could only have been produced from the singular vision of the Ormonds. To us at Boys’ Bible Study, writer/director Ron Ormond, his wife June and their son Tim are the “first family” of Christian movies. Some of the Ormonds’ most famous films, such as IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971) and THE BURNING HELL (1974) are still considered Christian genre classics decades later, known for their gripping exploitation-style treatment of Christian messaging that likely emerged from the family’s shared background in vaudeville performance. This same showbiz charisma could also explain why the Ormonds’ films were financially successful, widely distributed through church tours that were sometimes accompanied by a live presentation by Tim Ormond saving the souls in the audience who had just been moved by a shocking film experience. THE GRIM REAPER is plenty shocking; the Ormonds are skilled at DIY costuming and special effects to depict the supernatural horror of the world of demons, making Satan come to life for viewers to effectively demonstrate why tampering in the occult could doom their souls forever. Celebrity guest preachers Jerry Falwell (!) and Jack Van Impe (!!) also stop by the Ormonds’ set to deliver sermons addressed directly to the camera, hammering down the central theme of THE GRIM REAPER: hell, Satan, and his demons are very real. If you don’t believe in demons, you may as well not be a Christian.

Ash and Julian use this strange little video of Steven Crowder arguing with Amazon’s Alexa to diagnose the pathology of the media conservative. Crowder and his then-cohost, nicknamed “Not Gay Jared”, fire off a series of questions to Alexa in order to determine her pre-programmed religious and political leanings. They’re clearly having a bit of fun, but it’s still fascinating to observe how they get enraptured during the interrogation and seem to believe Alexa to be a real person. We use this opportunity to discuss Steven Crowder’s career, the state of contemporary pop conservatism, and finally answer once and for all - is Steven Crowder “camp”?

30 May 2021Religulous (2008)01:31:11

Rational-minded people, rise up! Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher’s RELIGULOUS is a documentary about how religion is “detrimental to the progress of humanity”. In a series of on-location interviews, Maher sets up false pretenses in order to interact with a variety of religious people who assume good faith, only to get “gotcha’d” by Maher’s noxiously smug tone. It’s troubling that while Maher sets up interviews with certified hypocrites - prosperity gospel preachers, ex-gays, and holocaust deniers - he’s so self-centered that he never allows time for any of his easy critiques to land effectively, making his guests’ sometimes reprehensible views seem tame in comparison. It’s the lower-class and sometimes marginalized civilians Maher encounters in his journey that actually get the most of his aggression, and the final act of the movie is genuine anti-Muslim propaganda, stopping just short of advocating genocide. RELIGILOUS proves that the religion of liberal atheism can be just as judgmental and dogmatic as any doomsday cult.

The collaborations between Baptist preacher Estus Pirkle and the Ormond family of filmmakers are considered some of the most legendary Christian genre films ever for their shocking imagery and urgent sermonizing. With our review this week of THE BELIEVER’S HEAVEN, we here at Boys’ Bible Study have now reviewed the entire trilogy, which also includes IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? and THE BURNING HELL. All three films feature fiery narration by Estus Pirkle intercut with colorful, dramatic vignettes by the Ormonds. THE BELIEVER’S HEAVEN is unique in the trilogy for focusing on the pleasure of heaven rather than the tragedy of earth or the horrors of hell (but don’t worry — we still get enough of those in this piece to keep our interest piqued.) “In My Father’s House there are many mansions,” says Estus Pirkle quoting John 14:2. He then proceeds to take us on a tour through a real mansion to hype us up for the delights of heaven. This gleeful literalness drives the rest of the film, which includes lots of time spent filming Christians with physical disabilities to prove to non-disabled viewers that they should be excited to take on “glorified bodies” in heaven. However, the close-up shots on the deformities of disabled people remind the viewer that the Ormond family first made their mark in vaudeville and carnival entertainment, where the disabled were frequently displayed as sideshow “freaks”. By titillating the viewer at the expense of the disabled and in the name of religious education, the Ormonds show their talent as “mondo” genre filmmakers, a style marked by a moralizing tone that barely disguises the actual purpose of selling the audience on morbid or lurid imagery. The contrast between the exploitative tone of the Pirkle/Ormond films and their seemingly sincere moral message makes THE BELIEVER’S HEAVEN, and the rest of the trilogy, one of the most fascinating watches in all of faith-based film.

28 Nov 2021Crazy Bible (2018)01:08:39

This episode came about by chance - or fate? While waiting in line at a recent Boys’ Night outing to the 100 gecs concert in Los Angeles, two people passed us Christian propaganda in the form of fake $1,000,000 bills. It wasn’t until later we realized this was direct contact from representatives of the legendary Living Waters Ministries. Living Waters is the life’s work of Ray Comfort, a notorious minister and filmmaker whose disarming yet aggressive demeanor makes him one of our most watchable auteurs. We’ve covered Ray’s filmmaking before, especially in our bonus episode on AUDACITY, which is the Living Waters official guide for how to mission to gay people. Our chance encounter inspired us to watch CRAZY BIBLE, which shows Ray Comfort in his element. He’s combining gonzo filmmaking tactics, stock footage, and narration over repurposed youtube videos in order to show atheists that their belief system is based on the ridiculous idea that “something came from nothing”. Will CRAZY BIBLE be the ultimate artwork that finally humbles atheists, and grants Ray Comfort an audience with his rival Penn Jillette? No! It won’t!

06 Oct 2024The Curse of Eve (2019)01:22:36

This Christian domestic horror begins with happy newlyweds Grant and Christie planning their new life together in the small Virginia town of Courtland, not knowing that their inability to understand each other will soon be the catalyst to disturbing supernatural events that will tear their relationship apart forever. Grant seems excited to provide for Christie at his new job fixing up foreclosed and abandoned houses, but is much less enthusiastic to fix up their own home with tons of problems, including a hole in the ceiling and a snake infestation. Grant’s inaction has effectively made Christie a prisoner in her own home;  when her car breaks down and Grant gets mad at her for nagging him to fix it, Christie is left unable to go job hunting or even to the grocery store. But is this by Grant’s design? Meanwhile, Grant’s Bible study group is having discussions on the “curse of Eve” and Christie is beginning to see ghostly apparitions around their property. THE CURSE OF EVE is one of the most interesting Christian films we’ve watched for our podcast because it’s not just meant to flatter its Christian audience, but offers a feminist critique of Christian social groups. This is rare for a genre of movies that thrives on its own persecution within secular pop culture, feeling like it’s always under attack from the world, so why point out its own insular problems? We at BBS consider Jasmine Deanne Andrews one of the most intriguing and talented DIY filmmakers in the faith-based genre right now not only for her compelling storytelling but also for her creative and sometimes truly bizarre take on digital cinematography.

20 Dec 2020Christmas Unwrapped (2009) feat. Dom Moschitti01:03:42

Christmas today is disgusting! We used to be able to look in department store windows and make pudding together as a nuclear family, but no longer. How can we take charge of the Christmas spirit in our own lives? There is a man with many, many theories about this and his name is Pastor Greg Robbins. His 2009 DVD Christmas Unwrapped uses documentary, dramatizations, interviews, and stock footage to fully deconstruct the true meaning of Christmas, and to provide an overload of ideas and solutions to “simplify” the holiday, which usually involve spending hundreds of dollars on various supplies. But can you put a price on making memories that last a lifetime? Our longtime friend and regular guest Dom Moschitti, the creator behind Paperback Paradise, actually found this DVD while digging through a Salvation Army, so he kindly takes us through the important information Pastor Greg has to share with the world.

A new wave of satanic influence in media prompts Ash and Julian to conduct an emergency meeting. Sam Smith and Kim Petras’s recent televised performance of their Grammy award-winning collaboration “Unholy” leaves nothing to the imagination, as the two cavort onstage in plastic red devil horns while singing about marital infidelity (a subject never before covered in the medium of the pop song .) Meanwhile, in the virtual realm, insidious video game designers are playing god of their own hand-sculpted worlds by decorating them with explicit references to satanism and the illuminati. Truly, it seems that our elites have gotten so cocky that they can’t help but “let the mask[s] slip” — accidentally revealing their secret plots to dethrone God and cannibalize the innocent by leaving a series of elaborate clues meant to only be understood by the smartest people in the world. Fortunately for us, these geniuses have made a series of YouTube videos explaining what’s going on. What a relief!

11 Jul 2021Thr3e (2007) feat. Maggie Siebert01:24:59

The final frontier of Christian filmmaking is -- horror. It's a genre that captivates even the most insular Christian artists, so it's natural that attempts have been made to create heart-pounding films that still manage to carry a biblical message. THR3E, based on the novel by prolific Christian thriller/fantasy author Ted Dekker, is a deeply confusing endeavor in this category that gets so hung up on trying to do everything that it does nothing. A terrorist called the Riddle Killer targets Kevin Parson, a handsome seminary student, by planting bombs that Kevin must diffuse by calling upon his knowledge of Bible verses. Meanwhile, Kevin is haunted by the sins of his past and the trauma of abuse he suffered at the hands of his bizarre family. As Kevin's sanity unravels, so does the plot, launching into a series of elaborate twists that test the patience of even the most devout cinema-goer. Joining us in the Sunday School classroom this week is author Maggie Siebert, whose debut book BONDING is a collection of terrifying and deeply compelling short stories that inspire waves of dread. Since Maggie is a horror movie expert with a Catholic background, we ask her - is effective Christian horror even possible?

This year's most anticipated Christian action film by Pure Flix stars the absolute legend David A.R. White in the titular role as a former assassin turned preacher. When his adopted daughter is kidnapped by a snakelike cult leader (Billy Baldwin) he makes a desperate call to the mysterious Network in order to get back in the killer-for-hire game and save his daughter's life. The film could easily be called the Christian version John Wick - it's hard not to compare, since both films feature a shadowy network of assassins who play by a secret code of conduct.

We continue our investigation on Estus Pirkle — the Baptist preacher whose forays into film with collaborator Ron Ormond are among the most compelling Christian movies ever made due to their eager adoption of grindhouse aesthetics. The sequel to the cult classic IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (which we covered last week) is called THE BURNING HELL. It’s Pirkle’s response to what he sees as an increasingly soft Christian culture that has abandoned teaching that hell is an eternal punishment for sinners and nonbelievers. Pirkle thinks hell is literally real, and that fear of hell is an appropriate tool for converting people to Christianity. In the film, Pirkle (playing himself) meets two tough guys who don’t believe in hell. Before Pirkle can convince them otherwise, one of the men is decapitated in a grisly motorcycle accident. The survivor is now confronting the reality that his friend is covered in “tormenting worms” in hell for eternity, and Pirkle’s ministering to him guides most of the action of the film. The film is very entertaining and atmospheric, but one can’t help but recoil at the lack of compassion Pirkle and his congregation seem to have for the average person, although “compassion” is relative and it’s clear Pirkle thinks he’s doing the right thing by spreading this dire message. Ash and Scott discuss - is Hell real? Will there be worms there? Will there be movies? Will the movies be good? We also compare the work of Estus Pirkle and Ron Ormond to the era of Hong Kong black magic movies that emerged not long after the release of THE BURNING HELL.

However, she meets someone who does exactly that. Tyler (Derek Boone) plays baseball and is even being scouted for the minor leagues, so he and Heather are perfect for each other, right? There’s one catch - Tyler made a pledge when he was 9 years old that he would never kiss a woman unless he knew it was true love. When he gives Heather a purity ring, their love game turns serious. Can Heather overcome her wild past and get to first base with this virgin hunk?

This stylish Christian horror film, possibly inspired by the SILENT HILL franchise, is based on a novel co-authored by the two titans of Christian supernatural fiction: Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker. These writers each sold millions of copies of their respective books throughout the 2000s, identifying and filling a niche for Christian supernatural thriller literature with exciting stories that still promoted a wholesome message. HOUSE is a collaboration between Peretti and Dekker, adapted into a feature film by director Robby Henson (THR3E) in a very lurid, saturated way that nowadays feels dated to the late 2000s, and could have been influenced by the burgeoning video game adaptation genre of cinema at the time. HOUSE as a film has interesting ideas but is barely held together with no narrative follow through. A couple experiencing domestic issues gets into literally three or four car crashes within the first ten minutes of the film, then stumble upon a remote cabin hotel with eccentric hosts who try to kill the couple before telling them the legend of the Tin Man, a psycho wearing a wooden mask who claims to have killed God. Weird southern gothic set dressing and video game-style quests hurtle the plot toward a disappointing climax where (spoiler alert) the Tin Man is defeated by light. It’s barely coherent and barely Christian, and doesn’t compare to other Peretti film adaptations we enjoyed such as HANGMAN’S CURSE (2003), but at least it’s weird and funny with bold, bright colors that remind us how Christian cinema tried to merge with the secular in the chaotic and very silly decade of the 2000s.

In this stylized, y2k-era Christian heist film, David A.R. White embarks on a Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines scenario by portraying good and evil identical twin brothers. Jeremiah (David A.R. White) is a preacher who tries his best to live life right, but doesn’t know how to inspire people with the word of God. John (David A.R. White) on the other hand, is a misfit even within the criminal underworld he inhabits, working for a cunning crime boss portrayed by D-list superstar Eric Roberts. Can both brothers unite and learn an important lesson -- that sending as many kids to jail as possible is a good thing?

15 Oct 2023The Devil Conspiracy (2022)01:23:13

A plucky art student is kidnapped by satanists and involuntarily impregnated with the cloned embryo of the antichrist in this compelling, overwhelming, and unintentionally hilarious supernatural thriller. THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY is not the family-friendly type of Christian movie we tend to cover on our show; it’s decidedly R-rated for strong language and disturbing body horror. However, the plot is firmly embedded in Christian mythology, embellishing on the biblical battle between St. Michael and his fallen fellow archangel, Lucifer. In the film, Lucifer has escaped cosmic imprisonment and is attempting to regain human form with help from a satanic cult who earn extra money cloning historic heroes such as Michelangelo and Vivaldi and then selling the cloned babies to rich people who want a child with a built-in résumé. Protagonist Laura (Alice Orr-Ewing) is sketching artifacts at a Shroud of Turin exhibition when she and the Shroud are both kidnapped with the intent of implanting Christ’s DNA within her so she can be the “Virgin Mary” of the antichrist. This leads to the movie’s ultimate question: if you were pregnant with the literal devil, would you have an abortion? The resounding answer: no! After a cockamamie series of plot twists and pseudo-intellectual debates, THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY concludes that even Lucifer deserves a second chance. We can’t help but interpret this ending as strongly anti-abortion, a bizarre message to be left with after two hours of watching a woman be possessed and tortured by the demon seed within her.

02 Apr 2023Amazing Ape (2016) feat. Black Dresses01:36:56

Ape-ril Fool’s! A confident and unyielding propaganda film wrapped in an unassuming package, AMAZING APE uses talking chimps and political intrigue to teach the world how eating a completely raw food diet and doing yoga can reverse the effects of powerful diseases such as terminal cancer, rendering the medical establishment completely obsolete. This is the first and only film by the director/producer who goes by the mononym Juliano — a chef-turned-filmmaker with a star clientele, specializing in raw vegan food, whose obsession with diet borders on religious. Juliano’s mystical worldview, where eating raw honey can literally cure cancer, comes to life in his film as the young protagonist Albert reverses his terminal illness using dietary guidelines he learns from a special chimpanzee named Simon. Simon is the descendent of the first chimp to fly a spacecraft, and he’s cared for in a secret military zoo by beautiful blonde scientist Riley. When Simon the chimp is purchased and transferred to an evil pharmaceutical lab that delights in torturing its animal subjects, Albert must convince his own mother Miranda, a sadistic torturer of chimps, to embrace the raw lifestyle and respect chimpanzees as honorary members of the human race. There are almost too many incredible moments in AMAZING APE to discuss, so we called in Rook and Devi of noise pop duo Black Dresses to help us platform Simon’s raw food diet and bring about the change in cultural consciousness known as “The Shift”. We’re honored to host these talented musicians as they make their podcasting debut.

We pride ourselves on staying on the cutting edge of Christmas movies, especially those made for Christians by Christians. That’s why we were excited to visit our local theater to see the new, widely-released Dallas Jenkins film based on the popular children’s novel of the same name. Originally authored by Barbara Robinson in 1972, THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER tells the story of the Herdman family, affectionately dubbed “the worst kids in the world”. The Herdmans effectively run their small town of Emmanuel because no one can control their bad behavior. The town always had a sanctuary away from the mischief in church, but this seal was broken when the Herdman kids discovered the free snacks offered and insisted on participating in the yearly Christmas pageant. A cherished town tradition in Emmanuel, the Herdmans risk destroying the Christmas Pageant through their destructive irreverence, but instead their sincere, outsider curiosity about Christianity ends up winning over the hearts and minds of the rest of the congregation, creating a special memory of THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER. Director Dallas Jenkins (son of Jerry B. Jenkins, co-author of the original LEFT BEHIND book series) was apparently so passionate about bringing THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER to life on film that he set a daily reminder in his phone to pray for acquiring the rights to the story. It’s a shame that this passion didn’t manifest in the final project, which is styled so blandly and portrayed so literally to the text that the story comes across as cruel and inhumane toward the Herdmans instead of whimsical.

Society keeps finding new ways to persecute Christians for having the correct faith and worldview. In director Daniel Lusko’s (JINGLE SMELLS) political thriller PERSECUTED, devout Christians feel threatened by a new law called the “Faith and Fairness Act”. This law attempts to make the religious landscape in America more “fair” in some vague way that we at Boys’ Bible Study unfortunately were not able to understand despite all three of us watching the the movie separately and trying to pay attention to it. Nonetheless, the vibes are off in America and only one man, the famous TV pastor John Luther, seems to be able to wield the power and influence needed to prevent this law from passing. When John uses his platform to challenge the American government, they attempt to silence him by making it look like he killed a girl in a car crash. Now disgraced and on the run as a fugitive, can John salvage his reputation while also preventing the country from becoming more fair? PERSECUTED is very typical of Christian films made at the end of the Obama era, when Christians vented their frustrations about liberal hegemony by imagining themselves as righteous warriors struggling against a political conspiracy.

Two brothers, abandoned as babies and raised by the local basketball coach, become the stars of their team. But when brother Josh’s ego gets too big for his small town, he goes his own way, and he and his brother Matt reenact the famous parable of the prodigal son. Eyad Zahra, director of the 2010 cult classic Muslim punk film The Taqwacores, is also a lifelong basketball fan. He joins us to discuss fasting for Ramadan while playing for his own high school basketball team, his Muslim NBA heroes, and the general cultural importance of sports.

02 Oct 2022Screened In (2021)01:31:52

Are we addicted to our freaking telephones? This cautionary thriller from director Lauren Havel and her co-writer Jennifer Havel dares to finally ask this question in the year of our Lord 2021. Fortunately for us, SCREENED IN’s tired critique of contemporary life is dressed up with absolutely insane sequences and creative decisions that kept us on the edge of our seats. When a teenage girl named Peyton starts to notice that she and her friends’ lives are far too focused on what’s happening on screens, she challenges them to a week-long “digital detox”, where they’ll attempt to go “off the grid” with zero electronics to interfere with their concentration. Somehow, despite their good intentions, this ignites a week of their lives with constant drama. Relationships are ruined, family secrets are uncovered, and a shocking plot twist involving a toddler’s medical emergency threatens to change the course of Peyton’s life forever. Is the demonic spirit of the smartphone punishing its teen captors for trying to free themselves from its grasp? In the end, only their own tenacity — and the power of prayer — will allow them to log off.

19 Sep 2021The End of Days: Global Catastrophe (2021)01:00:02

Mike Norris (son of Chuck) directs and stars in this Christian survival fantasy about a Christian community working together to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic environment as a zombie death virus ravages the land. Norris plays a character named “Hunter Wilde” who is supposed to be the heroic leader of the Crossroads campground, but his selfish actions and terrible decision making routinely put the entire team at risk. The scene where he breaks quarantine to allow a girl to enter the camp who has potentially been exposed to the virus, which has a 100% death rate among the infected, is particularly telling. But this film is actually a rebranded re-release of a 2019 project, meaning it was pre-COVID, which makes its plot eerily prophetic. But it’s not just fear of deathly illness striking terror into the hearts of Crossroads citizens - the demon Baal, his demonic cohorts, and even a cell of dastardly ISIS terrorists pose additional existential threats.

Happy NBA Finals! Helmut Brink is a little German boy who wants nothing more than to play the brand new sport called “basketball”. I know what you’re thinking. Didn’t we just fight a World War against the Germans? Why would we let them enjoy our (second) national pastime? But Helmut is a special little boy — he and his sister Brigitte were adopted as war refugees by a kindly Reverend of a little farming town in Washington, USA. They do their chores and say the Pledge of Allegiance like any other American schoolchildren, so they are allowed to have a little basketball as a treat. That’s the philosophy of school teacher Martin Conlon (played by Peter Coyote) in THE BASKET, a feature film for families released theatrically in the year 2000. Martin sees the men of his town struggling to pool their finances together to buy a new harvester machine, so he hatches the crazy scheme of putting together an amateur basketball team to compete for a tournament’s cash prize, having been trained in the exotic art by none other than basketball inventor James Naismith himself. Christians seem to love movie plots about people playing old timey sports — we’re reminded of SPIRIT OF THE GAME, a more recent Kevin Sorbo-fronted film about an early basketball tournament set in Australia. But THE BASKET goes beyond sportsmanship to weave a surprisingly complex plot with themes of war and immigration, set around the story of a fictitious opera DER KORB that was actually originally written and composed for this film. It’s still hard to imagine a film like this would ever have broad enough popular appeal to be released in theaters — it’s slow, goofy, pastoral, and much of the dialogue is delivered in a fake German accent. It speaks to a bygone pop cultural era where Christian stories were accepted in secular contexts because people appreciated their overt wholesomeness. Although THE BASKET may not be the most exciting sports film, it does feature one of the most shocking endings to a basketball game ever imagined. We can only hope James Naismith is smiling down at this film from heaven — in between teaching Jesus how to land the perfect free throw.

22 Jan 2023Left Behind II: Tribulation Force (2002) feat. Growing Up Christian podcast01:25:03

Our LEFT BEHIND movie month continues with the 2nd in the series, in which handsome young reporter Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron) and his former atheist pilot cohort Rayford Steele (Brad Johnson) form a TRIBULATION FORCE to oppose the rise of Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie), the charming, Slavic secretary general of the United Nations who promises to unite the world under a single currency. While the original LEFT BEHIND felt so competently made that it might be mistaken for a “normal” film, LEFT BEHIND II gives itself permission to go way off the deep end into pure Christian movie cliches. These include: worldly characters being unnecessarily hostile to Christians, Kirk Cameron trying to change the world by broadcasting a Biblical message on live TV, and a minor character’s bizarre conversion to Christianity featuring dialogue cribbed directly from a Ray Comfort sermon. Truly, LEFT BEHIND II teaches us that desperate times call for desperate measures. Joining us to oppose the New World Order are Sam and Casey of Growing Up Christian podcast, who have had many conversations in the past on their show about the religious trauma that some Christians experience after being exposed to terrifying rapture stories from a young age. We’re happy to have them in our own Tribulation Force.

03 Nov 2024Reagan (2024)01:42:27

Forget French body horror or the return of Francis Ford Coppola: real heads know the cinematic event of 2024 was this star-studded retelling of the life of REAGAN. With experienced director Sean McNamara at the helm (ON A WING AND A PRAYER, BRATZ, THE EVEN STEVENS MOVIE) we at Boys’ Bible Study were confident this film’s depiction of Ronald Reagan would be respectful and thorough. Besides, many Americans are gearing up to vote in the most consequential election of our lifetimes, so it felt only right to review REAGAN and look back at the political values we cherish from our recent past as inspiration for casting our ballots. Dennis Quaid stars as Reagan using what appears to be a combination of prosthetics and digital de-aging (for Reagan’s younger years) that creates an otherworldly effect. He’s joined by other “who’s whos” of conservative Hollywood (Jon Voight, Robert Davi, Kevin Sorbo, Marshall Teague, and more) as well as some other surprising cameos. We were particularly excited to see Scott Stapp (former lead singer of Creed) in a quick cameo as Frank Sinatra. Much of REAGAN is re-told through grating narration of Jon Voight doing a bad Russian accent, representing the Soviet agents and politicians who the film claims monitored Reagan’s every move during his life, disturbed by his crusade against communism. REAGAN takes a nonstop glowing tone in its framing of the conservative president’s life and actions; everything Reagan done is perfect and in deliberate service to his master plan to fight the Soviets. Even the big bowls of jellybeans Reagan was known for keeping in the White House were a clever personality test for evaluating his cabinet, by seeing which flavors they chose. It seems clear that the REAGAN film is a piece of cultural warfare trying to inject some positive reviews of conservatism into the popular mindset, made by Hollywood conservatives who might relate to Reagan’s own background as an actor. Ultimately, this choice to uplift Reagan’s career at all costs makes the film a laughably ridiculous puff piece. Whatever your political values, t’s simply not serious to reduce the life of a consequential politician to the level of complication of a YA novel.

Let us travel back in time to a golden age of Thanksgiving, when women wore bonnets, stuffing was king, and there wasn’t a single iPhone in sight. This is the era of AN OLD FASHIONED THANKSGIVING, based on a short story of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, the author of LITTLE WOMEN. We meet the women of the Bassett family — Tilly (Tatiana Maslany, of ORPHAN BLACK and SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW) is a teenage aspiring writer who lives in a tiny farmhouse shack with her mother Mary (Hélène Joy) and siblings. The poverty-stricken family is in danger of having to skip Thanksgiving this year, unless Tilly can get in contact with her randomly extremely rich grandmother Isabella, who Mary has kept secret from Tilly due to a mother/daughter dispute that permanently affected their relationship. It’s good story fodder for a Hallmark movie, which we expect to be 90 minutes long, to feature ladies in beautiful period dresses, and to resolve in a happy ending. AN OLD FASHIONED THANKSGIVING was actually an extremely popular TV movie when it premiered, reaching 5.2 million viewers. Spoiler alert: not only does Tilly mend the family relationship and uplift the entire Bassett clan back into aristocracy where they belong, she also marries a handsome young rich boy. AN OLD FASHIONED THANKSGIVING teaches us that you can overcome any of life’s problems, and have all the turkey and mashed potatoes you want, provided you randomly have an extravagant social safety net that makes your poverty larp all worth it in the end.

19 Apr 2020Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Progress (2020) feat. Alec Robbins00:57:52

Heavenquest is a brand new 2020 Christian film with a high fantasy style that feels like everything was run through a Game of Thrones generator with a confusing amount of Christianity tacked on as an afterthought. It's a pretty inscrutable film, but we still found ourselves attached to the evil rave nymph and the orc that haunts the Lake of Doubts. Joining us to unpack this film is our friend Alec, the creator of the daily webcomic "Mr. Boop". During our chat he confesses his Bar Mitzvah theme and the never-before-revealed plot of the comic he made when he was 13!

In one of our all time favorite films, a classic of Christian cinema, 6 strangers convene at a rickety restaurant in the middle of the woods called Last Chance Diner after a devilish police officer named Deville (hmm...) informs them the road up ahead is closed. Their orders are taken by a kindly man with a piercing gaze who somehow knows exactly what they want for dinner, as well as every sin they've ever done. I wonder who this could possibly be? A confused man relies on his notes to piece together the tatters of memories of things he’s experienced mere minutes ago in order to communicate his sad reality to an audience that pities him — but enough about Boys’ Bible Study podcast! Our movie this week is a new entry in our series exploring the immense catalogue of filmmaker Jason Campbell (THE MAN WHO WENT TO HEAVEN, NUN NANCY, THE STORY OF MOTHER’S DAY) who specializes in slice-of-life films that feature surprisingly sophisticated storytelling paired with bizarre technical decisions related to sound, photography, and editing. THE NOTEBOOKS takes a relatively common, yet tragic story of a senior man struggling with a severely impaired memory, and elevates it to the realm of the surreal with sound effects that feel like a haunted house, and a bizarre scene where protagonist Preston Walker turns on a TV just to laugh while watching the static. On a nostalgia trip back to his hometown to reclaim memories of his childhood, Preston influences God’s will to fix the life problems of many strangers he encounters along the way, but he struggles with the limitation of needing to write every single detail of his life down in one of his many notebooks to remember basic things such as where he parked his car, and the names of his family members. Could these ordinary notebooks contain a powerful healing secret that enriches Preston’s life, and the lives of the people around him? You’ll have to tell us, because we forgot!

We continue our study of the great Kenya Cagle’s filmography with this psychological thriller about the most dysfunctional family to ever live… and die. Stacy’s family is haunted by tragic violence, from the disappearance of her mother to the imprisonment of her brother Leroy in a mental institution after he killed their father. Stacy now hides with her grandma “Momma” in a remote cabin in Long Island, but their plans to lay low are thwarted one dark and stormy night when Leroy shockingly turns up at their door, having escaped the institution. Leroy fixes himself a sandwich in an excruciatingly long scene as Stacy and Momma plan their escape. Guns are drawn, tires are slashed, and a helpful policemen is stabbed as the grandma/daughter duo attempt to reason with Leroy, who they’re worried could kill them in a confused rage. But is Leroy really the danger here? Food related memories, from Leroy’s bologna sandwich to Stacy and Leroy’s favorite gumbo as a child, could unlock the secret to twisted family history. This “Caglevision” film is barely a Christian movie, but it’s worth a watch to experience yet another one of Cagle’s overwrought family dramas where a mother figure is painted as the ultimate evil. Kenya Cagle is a truly inventive storyteller who directs compelling performances out of amateur actors, and even though he has a tendency to “lose the plot” and focus on story details we as viewers really don’t care about at all, it’s always impressive and entertaining to see what he can accomplish on a shoestring budget.

29 May 2022In the Blink of an Eye (2009) feat. Anthony Banua-Simon01:16:41

Although our journey through Christian cinema has taken us many places, we always return home — the filmography of David A.R. White. He’s the co-founder of Pure Flix, and the producer/actor/director behind so many of the most notable faith-based films. He defines the genre. The tones and themes that most people would associate with their conception of “Christian film” are inspired by David’s body of work.  But IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE is an odd one even among his diverse catalog. This Christian take on GROUNDHOG DAY stars David as an atheist cop whose attempt to solve a kidnapping mystery while on vacation with his wife takes an unexpected turn when the rapture happens and traps him in a never-ending time loop. Joining us for this episode is our friend Anthony Banua-Simon. Anthony returns to the show to discuss his acclaimed debut feature documentary CANE FIRE and to lend his knowledge of David A.R. White to our discussion. We originally met Anthony because of his short documentary PURE FLIX AND CHILL (2018), which uses found footage and supercuts to present a compelling biography of David A.R. White, and proves definitively that David is the kingpin of Christian cinema.

06 Aug 2023A Thief in the Night (1972) feat. Wormy01:23:45

This grim yet colorful gem from the prolific Mark IV Pictures is one of the most revered and feared Christian movies of all time, for good reason. For many millennials who grew up Christian, A THIEF IN THE NIGHT was a foundational movie shown in church that introduced them to the terrifying immediacy of the apocalypse. Its snappy vignettes and powerful messaging that targets children left a strong impression and a sense of impending doom in young viewers. A THIEF IN THE NIGHT opens with a scene of a worship band covering the famous Larry Norman song “I Wish We’d All Been Ready”, taken from Norman’s 1969 album Upon This Rock, which is often credited as being the first Christian rock album of all time. “Children died, the days grew cold/A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold” the band sings, viewed by our teen protagonists, who take its message with varying levels of seriousness or bored amusement. As the film unfolds, the teens who don’t take this message seriously are faced with the scariest punishment available to a wannabe Christian — they are “left behind” in the rapture as America descends into a fascist state run by the antichrist. A THIEF IN THE NIGHT’s message is clear: doing good works is not enough to save you. A truly good Christian believes the apocalypse is deadly serious and coming soon, and deviance from this worldview is a mortal sin. Joining us on the pod today is our friend Wormy, aka Jacob, who we met online through doing the show and has provided some key research that built up a few of our episodes over the past few months. He joins us today using his past as a student of Biblical Studies to fill in some key details about the history of dispensationalism in American Christianity. Wormy has his own show of pop cultural history and criticism on YouTube as Sludge Surfer. Check it out! And look forward to a special Boys’ Bible Study live event announcement dropping tomorrow morning.

Accomplished television actor John Schneider (most famously Bo Duke in DUKES OF HAZZARD) also has a contemporary career as a conservative, faith-based film auteur. His most recent opus is the gritty, psychedelic patriot drama TO DIE FOR, where he portrays Quint North, a disabled veteran on a mission to protect the American flag from unsavory elements that would like to see it disrespected. Enemies of the flag include the local high school’s star quarterback, who has drawn media attention by taking a knee while the national anthem plays at his games. Quint also contends with his neighbor, a Native American man who doesn’t see the symbol of the flag with the same degree of pride as Quint, igniting racial tension between the two men. But the most crushing blow to Quint’s daily life comes when his own daughter files a restraining order against him to prevent him from driving too close to the local school while displaying an American flag, because today’s politically correct standards render the flag an offensive symbol. John Schneider uses a bizarre combination of on-location filming mixed with green screen effects, frequently on very different perspectives of size and scale, which create a disorienting visual environment that perfectly complements his character Quint’s descent into madness as he is pushed to the limit for the simple crime of being a proud American. Quint’s genuinely troubling depiction of alcohol use, and his untreated PTSD go completely unremarked on throughout the film. Could these medical issues explain why Quint’s relationships are so unsuccessful? This 4th of July, the fireworks aren’t just a boisterous celebration of American strength — they’re also a cry for help.

03 Jan 2021SPECIAL - 1 Year of Boys’ Bible Study! Roundup, Best Clips, and Top Picks01:42:39

Is prayer in school okay? What should I do if my friend is hooked on illegal porn? How can I, personally, defeat Isis? After one full year of intense studies in Christian cinema, the Boys reflect on what we learned. This episode is an extended discussion of the filmmakers, stars, and themes we’ve come to love from the genre. We also hold an awards ceremony to definitively decide which film, director, and actor are the most blessed in the biz. We hope this episode will be fun for not only our gentle listeners who have been with us since the beginning, but also anyone who is just starting to explore the delightfully cursed world of Christian film.

27 Jun 2021Passage to Zarahemla (2007) and Mormonism feat. Daniela01:23:08

Adapted from a YA fantasy novel written by the director (Chris Heimerdinger) himself, PASSAGE TO ZARAHEMLA takes teen fantasy tropes - such as unlocked supernatural abilities, time travel, and star-crossed lovers - and places them within a story fully based on the teachings of the Book of Mormon. Especially of note here is the alternate history of the Americas purported by Mormon lore - Nephites, Lamanites, and the evil Gadiantons are various indigenous American tribal factions that Mormons believe existed are direct descendants of the Biblical tribes of Israel. The film’s protagonist Kerra connects, possibly romantically, with a Nephite boy she meets in an alternate dimension, and an incredible adventure unfolds. Our friend Daniela, an ex-Mormon with family still deeply involved in the church, joins us for this conversation to provide a huge amount of context that made this film make so much more sense to us. Her fascinating life story will surely aid and influence our future discussions on Mormonism and their compelling body of film work.

04 Jul 2021Beyond the Mask (2015)01:13:40

A lot of the films we cover are distinctly American, linking Christianity with patriotism and American individualism. But BEYOND THE MASK is fitting for our 4th of July special  - powdered wigs, gunpowder, and plots of treason abound as a masked vigilante aids the founding fathers in their quest for American independence from the British empire. Protagonist William Reynolds, an agent for the East India Trading Company, defects from the company ranks to foil its evil schemes, and teams up with Ben Franklin and George Washington to do so. Along the way, he converts to Christianity to impress the woman who makes him the most horny.

20 Feb 2022Shatter Dead (1994) feat. Nick Vance of Cinematic Void podcast01:13:48

This shot-on-video (SOV) horror film is a gory and campy, yet deeply profound meditation on Christian themes. An angel has sex with a human woman, and this perverted “immaculate conception” causes God to abandon the human race. There is no more death. Those who die stay awake in their current state, forever. Actress Stark Raven portrays Susan, one of the last of the living who encounters walking dead, preachers, and terrorists on her wandering journey to find her boyfriend. Along the way, many try to persuade her to take the plunge into the next phase of non-existence, but what is immortal life separated from God’s light? SHATTER DEAD is far from a Christian film, but it proves artistically that the absence of God is hell on earth. Our friend Nick Vance is the co-host of Cinematic Void podcast, and he shares our love of uniquely transgressive film experiences. Together, we wanted to introduce Boys’ Bible Study listeners to the wide world of SOV film, with SHATTER DEAD as a compelling point of entry. 🪞

“I just wanted to dance and hang out, dad! And now... all of this” An innocent teen ballerina’s dreams are shattered when she is diagnosed with terminal leukemia, but God has an even greater plan for Sheri. This masterpiece by Christian auteur Greg Robbins shows the amazing things that can happen when an American high school girl is magically granted the exact same powers as Jesus. There’s a chance that the long-running CBS drama TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL is responsible for the contemporary American spiritual sickness as it manifests today. (Even if that’s not true, it feels true, and that’s what’s important.) The extremely popular y2k era TV show depicts a troupe of angels trying to help humans on earth while adhering to a weird corporate power structure that dominates life in heaven. Tess (Della Reese) is the mother angel; Monica (Roma Downey) is a “search and rescue” angel who reports to her; Gloria (Valerie Bertinelli) is training for life on 21st century earth and is really bad at it; Andrew (John Dye) is an angel of death. Together they are case workers helping humans in need. We’ve previously reviewed another season 8 episode “Chutzpah” where the gang of angels meet a self-hating Jewish antisemitic cartoonist. Today we review “Minute by Minute”, where a nun with a dark past must prevent a Columbine-style bombing of a Catholic school before it’s too late. Time is of the essence, but you wouldn’t know it from the angels in this episode, who spend tons of time frittering away at the local diner or refusing to use their powers to even encourage a human to pull the fire alarm or call the police. The lore of how angels are allowed to interfere with human lives in this show is incredibly confusing, especially noticeable when trying to prevent a mass casualty event. That’s why MINUTE BY MINUTE is an incredible piece of television that has undeniably influenced the way Americans view Christianity. Angels in American life are beautiful and wholesome yet ideologically confused, clumsy poltergeists.

02 Jun 2024Jubilee Media’s “Middle Ground” Series01:18:02

Since the beginning of recorded history, it has never been possible for people with opposing viewpoints to agree on anything — until now. Los Angeles-based media company Jubilee Media describes their extremely popular MIDDLE GROUND YouTube series as a “social experiment” bringing together individuals with opposing identities or viewpoints for some civilized discussion (for a change.) Some of these matchups that were viewed millions of times include “Flat Earthers vs. Scientists”, “Men’s Rights vs. Feminism”, and “Millionaires vs. Minimum Wage Workers”. These are all juicy concepts, but this week Ash and Julian choose to review MIDDLE GROUND’s format by discussing their episode “Progressive Christians vs. Conservative Christians”, where Biblical literalists and deconstructionists smack down over discussion topics like abortion, LGBT rights, Black Lives Matter, and more.  We notice that MIDDLE GROUND’s flawed format is actually a great way for both sides to reveal their own classic biases and fallacies. Conservative Christians tend to claim their favorite Bible passages are literally true while blatantly ignoring others; meanwhile, progressive Christians love to just make stuff up that sounds nice and claim Jesus would support it. We spin our wheels about this for a while before moving on to a debate between Polyamorists vs. Monogamists, for no reason other than to gawk at its participants. We conclude that Jubilee Media, like Dhar Mann (another popular YouTube media production company who we have studied in multiple Boys’ Bible Study episodes), thrives on creating emotionally exploitative content that disguises itself as wholesome and balanced. No matter who wins on MIDDLE GROUND, we lose!

11 Feb 2024What Is True Love? (2015)01:20:34

For a wholesome Valentine’s Day message, we turn to the Christian denomination most versed in the art of love: the Jehovah’s Witnesses. We love any opportunity to repeat our hot take that the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) are the best filmmakers in all of Christianity; their productions are high quality, their actors are poised, and their branding and aesthetics are impeccable. We’ve learned through their films that the JWs absolutely HATE working long hours (because it disrupts their religious routine). They have ultra conservative social views and do not fraternize with LGBT people or really anyone at all who promotes worldly values that contradict “The Truth”. Family is important to them; in fact, even older teens must run all of their life and relationship decisions through their parents. The dating lives of JW teens are just one of the many topics covered in WHAT IS TRUE LOVE?, a film primarily about teenage infatuation and how it must be controlled by leaning on Jehovah. Protagonist Liz becomes “interested” in Zach, a classmate at her high school who has recently converted to JW, but is terribly disappointed when her parents refuse to allow them to date due to the fact that Zach is unbaptized and “high risk”. Liz’s fellow JW friend Meg ignores the red flags and begins dating Zach after Liz rejects him. Meg and Zach’s lives are completely ruined by this hasty decision to elope, which causes disgrace to their families and friends and threatens the couple’s chances at eternal life. Meanwhile, the prudent Liz gets another chance at love when a chance encounter with the hunky John makes her believe that he could one day become her “spiritual head”. A happy ending is only possible through Jehovah, and here at Boys’ Bible Study we love happy endings!

24 Mar 2024The Robot The Creator (2022)01:15:20

Can a robot become so intelligent that it acquires a human soul, and can we make it sexy? These are questions posed by THE ROBOT THE CREATOR by director Jasmine Deanne Andrews (sulliedbride.com) and co-writer Aaron R Sampson, a truly remarkable DIY Christian film with a huge amount of imagination, delivering an uncompromisingly ambitious story about killer robots and CIA laboratories but filmed on no budget in random people’s houses. The government asks a dream team of robotics scientists to continue their research years after one of their robots programmed with the “kill kill kill command” goes on a (you guessed it) killing spree, and the team reluctantly reassembles to perfect their research in a more ethical manner. They resurrect their experiment, a female robot named Auto Mae, but tragedy strikes after the team teaches her the comedy of Looney Tunes and she pushes a scientist off of a cliff because she thinks it would be funny (this is the actual plot of the movie). Auto Mae’s natural intelligence makes her curious about the creator of humanity, but ultimately, the human folly of imitating God by creating a robot is too big of a sin for God to ignore. Can the world’s top robotics team close Pandora’s Box before it’s too late?

07 Mar 2021Quigley (2003) feat. Ben O'Brien01:19:19

In this infamous comedy with Christian themes, rich and despicable video game company CEO Archie Channing (portrayed by Gary Busey) suddenly dies in a car accident. After begging angels in heaven for a second chance, he returns to earth as QUIGLEY, a cute little Pomeranian, and attempts to right his wrongs despite being limited by his new dog body. Gary Busey’s captivating performance, and director William Byron Hillman’s deft command of pacing elevate this film to a family-friendly classic. Artist Ben O’Brien (Wham City) joins us to discuss if getting a second chance at life is worth having to wear a dog collar the whole time.

www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy

Merry Christmas in July! We love Christmas movies for their tedious pleas for a return to small town values despite clearly being written by effete big city media types. CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C is one of the most glaring examples of this we’ve ever encountered, which makes it extremely charming. Dan Reed (Ted McGinley) is the affable mayor of a small Alaskan town with the seemingly perfect life, until his former high school rival Mitch Bright (Daniel Baldwin, who sounds almost exactly like his brother Alec) returns to Alaska after making it big in the city with a plan to dethrone Dan as mayor and finally separate church and state by removing the Nativity display from city hall. It’s pretty obvious that this is a stupid idea and our hero Dan is going to prevail, which he quickly does, humiliating Mitch by revealing that his “rich and successful” act is a total lie. What’s more interesting here is how CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C reveals that many adults are perpetually stuck repeating their high school humiliations, living their lives according to whether they were designated a “winner” or a “loser” at age 15. Also, the film is notable for a show stealing performance by Christian stand up comedian and film producer Brad Stine, who wrote the song that inspired the story of this film and who doesn’t let a scene of his go by without completely chewing up the scenery. Don’t believe in CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C? Get on the mic at your local city council meeting and let them have it.

31 Dec 2023Autopsy (1975) feat. Jim Branscome of Cinematic Void01:10:45

When a wave of unexplained murders and suicides hits your town, and you begin seeing demented visions of corpses coming to life to torment you, who else would you turn to but a priest? AUTOPSY is a lurid, intense, and captivating thriller about a beautiful young scientist who teams up with a race car driver turned Catholic priest to find the truth behind a series of killings that may not be as random as they first seem. Director Armando Crispino enlists prolific actors Mimsy Farmer, Barry Primus, and Ray Lovelock to act out a bizarre web of passion and intrigue in a tone that lovers of sleazy Italian films of the 1970s would immediately recognize as typical to the “giallo” genre. But what is this… “giallo”? You may ask, since most Boys’ Bible Study listeners prefer to keep their innocence intact by watching a strict diet of faith-based films. This week, the Bible Boys (“I Ragazzi della Bibbia”) get an education in the giallo genre from our friend Jim Branscome of Cinematic Void, who has just kicked off his annual “January Giallo” screening series in Los Angeles and several other participating theaters across the United States. Giallo is just one of the many film genres on which Jim is an expert, and he’s risen to prominence as a key player in the Los Angeles film scene through his diligent work curating film events and starting conversations on the medium through his popular Cinematic Void podcast. We’re so excited to finally have Jim on our show to discuss a giallo with vaguely Christian themes, even though we don’t understand why God allows Jim to pervert a new generation of film-goers with such filth.

19 May 2024Sense of Urgency (2017)01:13:27

This Christian thriller shows how even a situation as scary and inconvenient as a bus hijacking can become a one-way ticket to salvation. Izzy is a privileged yet rebellious goth teen with a streak of dye in her hair, much to the disappointment of her Christian parents, who accidentally reveal to Izzy that she is adopted during a heated family discussion. Izzy’s life suddenly becomes a quest to find her birth parents. Fortunately, her boyfriend Grayson has an uncle Rex who is a private investigator and is able to locate Izzy’s mom, inspiring Izzy and Grayson to hop on a bus to meet her. Suddenly, a nightmare becomes reality — the bus is hijacked by a group of goons who kidnap Izzy, Grayson, and other passengers, demanding Izzy’s father pay  $2 million for her safe return. The psychological torment the kidnappers inflict on the passengers is the focus of most of SENSE OF URGENCY, and a series of bizarre plot twists transpire that would surely keep viewers on the edge of their seats if any of the surprises followed a coherent internal plot logic. Since none of them do, the final shocking reveal that spurs our protagonists to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior is way more insane than inspiring. Still, SENSE OF URGENCY is a fun and watchable faith-based film because it understands that a lurid story about domestic terrorism is more exciting than a dull chamber drama of people talking to each other about God. But what if I wanted a dull chamber drama about God? Don’t worry — since every character is trapped on a bus for an hour, we have plenty of time (and hostages) to kill.

A film that could have simply been a straightforward, wholesome tale about compassion for the homeless becomes a surreal pseudo-Christian epic for the VHS era. EMANON was the directorial debut of Stuart Paul, but the film is truly a family production. Stuart Paul’s siblings, Steven and Bonnie Paul, as well as his mother, Dorothy Paul, have credits on the movie. Becoming familiar with these names will unlock an entire world of filmmaking, with famous titles over the years one may not have realized were interconnected — for instance, the BABY GENIUSES franchise, and the BRATZ live action adaptation are all Steven Paul productions. Stuart, however is the one who shines in EMANON - he plays the titular character, a homeless drunk capable of magical feats that cause some to believe he may be the second coming of Christ. He is watched with interest by Jason Ballentine, heir of the famous Ballentine fashion company — a disabled spoiled rich kid who is driven around New York City all day by his faithful chauffeur, Max. Jason’s mother Molly is struggling to take over the company after the Ballentine patriarch recently passed away. When Jason discovers Emanon, this unassuming man could unlock the key to creating a truly bizarre “homeless couture” fashion line that will change the world and get the Ballentine company back into financial solvency.
