02 Dec 2022Everett Worthington Jr.: Forgiveness as a Coping Mechanism | Bouncing Back #801:30:02

Getting offended is inevitable, and it’s a natural response to words or anything that hurts us. However, we can’t live a life holding grudges, this will significantly impact our physical and mental health. Forgiveness may seem hard but it is the key to a peaceful state of mind, this can be done by acknowledging our emotions and identifying what needs to be healed. Forgiveness will help us to release negative emotions (e.g. hate, anger, resentment, and bitterness) and replace them with more peaceful emotions.

In this episode of Bouncing Back: The Personal Resilience Science Insights Podcast, host Tia Harmer is joined by Everett Worthington Jr. Everett is a Commonwealth Professor Emeritus working in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Virginia and has published over 45 books, 500+ articles, and scholarly chapters, mostly on forgiveness, humility and positive psychology, as well as marriage and family topics, religion and spirituality. Everett has developed the REACH Forgiveness model that is being tested currently in global grant-funded randomized controlled trials in 5 countries, and has developed numerous other positive psychological interventions.

The conversation started by discussing the two models of forgiveness, decisional forgiveness and emotional forgiveness, and how forgiveness can let out negative emotions within ourselves. He also shared his forgiveness practices that we can do in our daily lives.

04 Nov 2022Steven Hickman: How Self-Compassion Builds Resilience | Bouncing Back #401:31:56

Self-compassion is a moment where we recognize our suffering, whilst still managing to give ourselves the kindness and positivity that will help us to relieve our suffering. Although self-compassion looks like a simple action, in fact, most of us would likely face challenges while practicing self-compassion.

In this episode of Bouncing Back: The Personal Resilience Science Insights Podcast, host Tia Harmer is joined by Steven Hickman, the Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. He is a Certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher and trainer, and a Clinical Psychologist by training. Steven and his colleague, Michelle Becker, co-developed the Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher Training program (both in-person and live online versions) and have directly participated in the training of over 1000 MSC teachers around the world. He has had the privilege of teaching the MSC program many times around the globe and is also a Certified teacher and trainer of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

The conversation is started by getting to know Steven through his favorite historical fiction book. Then we will go to the meat of the discussion on how he practices self-compassion day-to-day. He also shares how he combined the three components of self-compassion (mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness) when reacting to one particular problem.

18 Nov 2022Stefan Zavalin: Adopting Active Work Habits to Overcome Sedentary Lifestyles | Bouncing Back #601:28:44

How much time do you spend sitting a day? Is it less than 7 hours, or is it even more? The more time we spend sitting at work, the more likely we are to be used to sedentary lifestyles. Sedentary lifestyles, also known as an inactive lifestyle, can be understood as the absence of movement or not being physically active. However, we can't reduce sedentary lifestyle by simply allocating more time to exercise. It’s about how we adapt these activities to physically stimulate our bodies and move more.

In this episode of Bouncing Back: The Personal Resilience Science Insights Podcast, host Tia Harmer will be joined by Dr. Stefan Zavalin. He is a movement mentor driven to change desk work culture. In 2021, Stefan started a company called Love to Move, where he mentors organizations on adapting company culture to improve productivity and health. The dream: evolve the current work model so people no longer have to choose between work and health. Stefan aims to make virtual services accessible to all to help the cultural shift. Since starting his mission, Stefan has written a book called Sit Less and given a TEDx Talk on the same subject.

The conversation is started by getting to know Stefan through his favorite book. Then, he will share his insights and tips as a movement mentor to develop more active work habits to overcome sedentary lifestyle.

Stress can be seen as an early warning system given by our bodies as a sign that there’s something wrong within ourselves. Acknowledging stress as an early warning system is one thing, the second thing is the way we manage the stress so it won’t give us negative effects on our mental health. But, how do we manage stress? Is there any effective way to relieve stress?

As a psychologist, Merryn is specialized in the field of stress and anxiety. Other than that, she also co-founded a arachnophobia (spider phobia) program in conjunction with the Melbourne Zoo.

The conversation started by getting to know Merryn through her favorite book, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
