04 May 2020 | Is Bill de Blasio An Anti-Semite? Are Boomers OK? Are Orcs Racist? Is Bill de Blasio An Orc? Are Orcs Boomers? | 00:38:19
The show gets off to what feels like its 100th consecutive turbulent start, with Katie seeking solace over a super-personal medical issue. Then the hosts discuss Bill de Blasio's tweet about the Jewish community not following social-distancing rules: Just how meshuga was it? After that, they move on to a conversation over a popular narrative about Boomers and coronavirus, and finish things up by addressing the question on everyone's mind: Is it racist to portray orcs (the fantasy creatures, which aren't real) as uncivilizable? 13 Apr 2020 | Episode 4: Real Time With The Louis C. Rogan Experience | 00:44:03
Jesse tries to gaslight Katie into believing she's Jewish. After he succeeds, the cohosts move on to the meat of the show: a discussion of three Problematic Men. First they talk about Joe Rogan, who has been found guilty of having offensive opinions. What does the controversy over his endorsement of Bernie Sanders, and his more recent turn toward Trump-curiousness, tell us about how pundits misunderstand the average voter? Then they move on to noted masturbator Louis C.K. Has he been punished enough? If not, what is anyone supposed to do about it? (Also, does dropping the second 'R' in the R-word make it any more acceptable?) The cohosts close out the show by debating Bill Maher's most recent dip into hot water: his argument that the coronavirus should, in fact, be called The Oriental Menace (or something). 15 May 2020 | Patrons Only: When Your Training's Shut Down / And It Causes A Frown / That's Damore | 00:29:14
In our first-ever Patrons-only episode, we break down an NBC News Article about the latest diversity brouhaha at Google, which leads into a broader discussion about what we expect of diversity programs, whether conservative complaints about the wackier ones have some merit, and the media's coverage of James Damore's memo (which argued, if memory serves, that female employees at Google should be kept in pens like livestock). Plus: What to do when your in-laws think you're hellbound, and a promising left-versus-right format for future eps. Other lnks: Jesse's article on the IAT, Katie's article on Starbucks' implicit bias trainings, Jesse's newsletter about New York City's controversial Department of Education diversity trainings, Jesse's article about the Damore memo, and the Guardian article in which Cordelia Fine appears unconvinced of said memo's Hitlerianishnessitude. 16 May 2020 | Episode 9: Layoffs And Teigen And Roman And Kondo And Feel-Bad Liberalism | 00:33:58
Here's Blocked and Reported, Episode 9: Layoffs And Teigen And Roman And Kondo And Feel-Bad Liberalism. Our week-to-week schedule varies a great deal. Sometimes the free weekly episode isn't ready until Sunday night. Sometimes, like this week, it's ready significantly earlier. As an extra perk to you, our trusty patrons, we're going to give you early access to the weekly free episodes when our schedules and other obligations allow us to. Enjoy! Summary: Katie leads off the show by discussing her layoff from The Stranger and reflecting on her mixed feelings about her time there. This some broader commiseration about just how deeply, profoundly screwed journalism is right now. To lighten things up Jesse reads Katie a poem he wrote for her (it's really good). Then the hosts tie up some loose ends about that whole Chrissy Teigen/Alison Roman/Marie Kondo thing, including the weird, flattening language of "woman of color" and Roman's apology. After that, Jesse unpacks a viral tweetstorm that seems geared at antagonizing sympathetic would-be white anti-racists and explains why he views it as an example of what he calls "feel-bad liberalism." In the final segment, the hosts unveil the show's new Patreon page and ask listeners to empty their banks accounts to support Blocked and Reported. Show notes/links: -An email from a listener suggesting we were too dismissive of the race angle of Teigenghazi (Twitter) -Alison Roman's apology (Twitter) -Ally Henny's tweetstorm about would-be white allies (Twitter) -Jesse's original ranty tweetstorm defining feel-bad liberalism (Twitter) -Feel-Bad Liberalism at the Victoria, BC women's march (Singal-Minded) This is a public episode. 22 May 2020 | Patrons Only: Go Team War Eagle, Fight, Fight, Fight! | 00:23:20
In their first-ever edition of "🥱 or 🔥," a game in which one cohost tries to convince the other that a given internet controversy is interesting, Jesse regales Katie with the tale of a leftist African-American studies professor who decides to kick off his new lecturer gig at Auburn University by insulting one of the university's football traditions over Twitter. Spoiler alert: His opinions are not well-received! Also in this episode: Jesse's touts the efficacy of "Irish goodbyes" and Katie gives an update about her island hideaway. This is a public episode. 23 May 2020 | Episode 10: "Ronan Farrow, Jia Tolentino, And An International Network Of Powerful Lesbians" | 00:57:36
Before jumping into a truly brutal week for media news involving journalists who are younger and more attractive and successful than they are, Jesse and Katie are interrupted by their newly installed Alison Roman Controversy Alarm, forcing them to briefly update listeners on the latest twist in that eternal tale. Then they turn their attention to a PinkNews article positing a global conspiracy of lesbians who are sexual abusers and human traffickers and explain how that ties into the broader, white-hot culture wars involving gender-critical feminists and so-called TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists). In the final two segments, the hosts discuss Ben Smith's claims about Ronan Farrow's lackluster fact-checking and Jia Tolentino's blog post about her parents' guilty plea in a human-trafficking case, as well as the telling and arguably disingenuous responses from major media figures to both stories. 31 May 2020 | Episode 11: CPK (Central Park Karen), Racist Policing, And The Endless Battle Over Online Shaming | 00:48:30
In this week's episode, Katie and Jesse discuss the Amy Cooper/Christian Cooper incident in Central Park. Is this different from other instances of online shaming? Do we lose something when, in trying to understand a complicated problem like police shootings and other abuses, we focus in on individuals rather than institutions and structures? Why are white women so often pilloried these days when white men, like Jesse in particular, are obviously so much worse? 02 Jun 2020 | Episode 12: Protests And Riots Everywhere, Media Insane, Things Bad, And So On And So Forth | 01:03:26
There's so much going on that Katie and Jesse are back again, already. In this episode they discuss the protests and riots popping off all over the country in response to George Floyd's horrific death, the media's predictably sloppy handling of some of the complexities of police reform, and the difference between meaningful and performative activism. Should they appoint themselves leaders of the nationwide movement for criminal justice reform? Hard to say. In the patrons-only segment starting at 41:00, the hosts discuss everyone's antifa obsession and why Jesse is so frustrated with the bougie liberal antiracism that is exploding in popularity during this crisis. 05 Jun 2020 | Episode 13: The Best Podcast Of All New York Times | 01:18:41
In today's episode, the hosts zero in on an obscure, under-covered newspaper known as "The New York Times." Specifically, they discuss an explosion of employee anger over the paper's decision to publish a column by Sen. Tom Cotton, and what it can (maybe) tell everyone about internal dynamics in some media companies at the moment. Then, they shift gears to a Times article about a nonbinary 7-year-old and discuss the ways in which a certain subgenre of storytelling could be obscuring the nature of gender-identity development. In the show's final, patrons-only segment, Katie tells Jesse about an Instagram controversy involving white liberals trying to show how much they care about racial injustice, but digging themselves into a deeper and deeper hole as a result. 06 Jun 2020 | Bonus: Jesse Interviews Ben Burgis, Author Of "Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left" | 01:28:44
For this, the first-ever patrons-only Blocked and Reported interview, Jesse interviewed Ben Burgis, a philosopher, prolific writer for Jacobin and other outlets, and the author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left. Among other subjects, the duo discussed self-sabotaging messaging on the left, the flaws in Jordan Peterson's conception of 'post-modernism,' and the class element missing from the police-reform discussion. At the end, Jesse tried to get Ben to turn him into a socialist. Did it work? Only one way to find out. A few articles by Ben: "Socialism and Human Nature," "Capitalism Isn’t Working. But What Would a Viable Socialist System Look Like?," and "Why Jordan Peterson Is Always Wrong." Below you'll find a guide to what is discussed at which points in the podcast. Enjoy! 12:15 - Ben on the problem with Oxford-style debate 20:30 - Jesse and Ben discuss the dangers of assuming people who make ‘bad’ political choices are fundamentally evil or broken 26:15 - on “if you criticize U.S. foreign policy, you are pro-al-Qaeda” - style argumentation, and the frustrating extent to which the left is now adopting it 29:00 - online, staying chill is the best revenge 31:45 - IT’S JORDAN PETERSON TIME 49:20 - the silliness of the fight over ‘platforming’ 52:38 - the problem with making maximalist positions like “abolish the police” the face of leftist movements 56:50 - “DURING PRIDE?????” 1:02:00 - NYC DSA’s deplatforming of Adolph Reed, who stands accused of “class reductionism” 1:04:45 - another DSA controversy, this one over “white saviorism” 1:08:00 - Ben on the overlooked class element of the police-reform debate 1:15:20 - you don’t want to broadcast the myth that white people, particularly poor ones, have nothing at stake in police reform 1:19:55 - Jesse wraps things up by saying, “It’s better to be a wussy liberal than a socialist — CHANGE MY MIND” This is a public episode. 08 Jun 2020 | Episode 14: Bari Weiss Is Right | 00:55:19
Bari Weiss did some tweets about how there is a generational divide at The New York Times that is, in her view, hampering the paper's ability to publish quality commentary and journalism. In response, a sizable cohort of her colleagues LITERALLY devoured her (metaphorically, on Twitter). In their most frustrated episode yet, Katie and Jesse explain why Bari was fundamentally right. That doesn't mean her framing was perfect ('safetyism' isn't exactly the problem here), but, as the hosts argue, the fact that so many journalists think Bari is making this up is pretty insane given the rampant evidence for it. The problem is that the people who don't think there's a problem are the same people no one affected by these dynamics would ever, ever confide in. Along the way the hosts talk about their own experiences with an issue that is getting worse by the day: the most hysterical and dishonest journalists on Twitter effectively dictating editors' decisions about what stories to assign and what subjects to cover. Also, Katie talks about her struggle session at a Seattle rooftop bar and Jesse makes the case for converting Blocked and Reported into a full-blown scammy cult. 14 Jun 2020 | Episode 16: The Cancellations Will Continue Until Antiracism Improves | 01:15:22
The roiling tremors on the left continue, as a young progressive data analyst gets fired for... it's honestly too ridiculous to even type, and the Poetry Foundation shows us what a truly hysterical meltdown looks like. The hosts use their intellect and savvy to try to understand the difference between two 'violent' acts: "kneeling on someone's neck until they die horrifically" and "issuing a statement that isn't quite strong enough." Everything is insane right now. And violent. NOTE: Since you are a patron, you already have access to a longer cut of the Ben Burgis interview that plays after the outro music of this episode. And the J.K. Rowling patrons-only episode will be up by noon, Eastern time on Sunday, June 14th. 20 Jun 2020 | Episode 17: "White Fragility" Is A Completely Bizarre And Pernicious Book And It's A Terrible Sign That So Many Americans Love It | 00:55:25
(UPDATE, 6/21/2020: Replaced the original file with one that has a new intro from Katie about some violence that took place in the CHAZ. This is the version we'll be posting on the free feed tomorrow, but everything is otherwise identical. -Jesse) In the intro, Katie regales Jesse with tales from the CHAZ. Then, in part because Jesse is obsessed and desperately needs to get a lot of vitriol surrounding this subject out of his system, the deeply masochistic hosts devote the entire rest of the episode to a dissection of one of the strangest books you will ever read about race, Robin DiAngelo's "White Fragility." Does Robin DiAngelo know any black people who aren't antiracist educators? Or any other humans in general? What are the details of her segregated-crying policy? Are there better explanations than "white fragility" for why someone dragged into a mandatory training at work and called racist by a weird lady might respond negatively to such an experience? So many questions! (CORRECTION: In this episode we wrongly state that a definition of 'racism' favored by DiAngelo was added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. As Snopes explains, this is not the case: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/merriam-webster-definition-racism/.) 20 Jun 2020 | Bonus Interview: "What a stupid f*cking way to have a really important conversation": Reflections On A Yearlong White Fragility Training | 00:46:04
If hearing Jesse and Katie dig around in the strange innards of "White Fragility" wasn't enough Robin DiAngelo for you, have we got the thing: an interview Katie conducted with a woman whose former company, throw into disarray by a racial microaggression, brought in DiAngelo to conduct a full year's worth of antiracism training, complete with (unpaid) homework. It went.... strangely, and at one point involved allegations of subconscious swastikas. This is a public episode. 25 Jun 2020 | BONUS: Here's Our Interview With Jeremiah Johnson Of The Neoliberal Project | 01:01:22
If you develop severe physical symptoms whenever you go more than a day without hearing fresh content that includes Katie's and Jesse's voices, you're in luck: Here's an interview the hosts did with Jeremiah Johnson of The Neoliberal Project (here's his Twitter account) which Johnson generously shared (it's also up on his own organization's Patreon page). It was a pretty wide-ranging discussion -- in addition to covering the David Shor firing and Washington Post blackface article, the trio also discussed cancel culture more broadly, the difference between real activism and online slacktivism, and the question of what standards tech companies should use for determining who to deplatform. 27 Jun 2020 | Episode 18: A Reckoning Is Afoot, A Rattled Rationalist, A False Karening, And A Troubled Liberal Enclave | 00:47:48
A reckoning is afoot, as Jesse finally confronts Katie over her abusive managerial style. After the hosts get that out of the way, they proceed into a discussion about The New York Times' decision to publish the famed rationalist blogger Scott Alexander's full name -- and the rather effective-seeming countermeasure Alexander pulled in response. Then they move onto a broader conversation about journalistic ethics with regard to naming subjects against their will, and Katie talks about the time she was publicly shamed for trying to defend someone against a public shaming. In the second segment, the hosts discuss a New York Times story about a Minneapolis neighborhood's difficulties living up to its stated values, and, by working through about their own views about when to call the police, establish the podcast's formal Cop Policy. Jesse interviews Yascha Mounk about the threats liberalism is facing from both the left and the right, and Yascha introduces a new platform he is launching to help stem the tide. The duo also discuss Yascha's great but infuriating article in The Atlantic, "Stop Firing the Innocent," the origins of the gender wage gap, antifa, the racial politics of police reform, and more. The gang celebrates July 4th by barely mentioning it. Instead, Jesse and Katie talk about Blocked and Reported's arguably FIRST EVER beef, which involves a very sensitive staffer at The New Republic. Then they relay two real corrections and one fake one from previous episodes, talk about the increasing possibility, in light of a new court decision, that at least one contributor to the Shitty Media Men list will be 'unmasked,' and discuss a thoughtful essay on what it feels like to be at the bottom of a Twitter pileon. 08 Jul 2020 | Patrons Only: Dread Letter Day | 00:43:22
Katie and Jesse signed a letter that was published in Harper's! It's pretty basic but given Twitter's reaction you would have thought it was an excerpt from Mein Kampf. In today's episode, the hosts discuss why they signed the letter and run through some of the most unhinged and disingenuous reactions to it, discovering, in the process, that one of the letter's loudest critics tried to get them both fired. Katie also asks Jesse about the time he reported a fellow journalist to her boss, and the two hosts work through whether this is different from the behavior they themselves are complaining about. Also: Jesse's trajectory on the even more emotionally charged question of cargo shorts. 11 Jul 2020 | Episode 20: Online Harassment Is Bad But Also People Are Extremely Disingenuous About It, And Other Observations | 00:52:25
After Jesse bravely expresses an opinion that is likely to get him cancelled by Cancel Culture, and to potentially destroy the podcast entirely, the hosts, who are clearly hated by God Himself (of maybe... HERself??), devote almost the entire episode to Letter Discourse and Counter-Letter Discourse. The discussion mostly concerns the harassment of a Vox staffer, which Jesse contributed to and feels bad about, even as he is aggrieved at the unhinged-in-light-of-the-evidence Jesse Did It narrative that took over bluecheck Twitter earlier this week. What are individuals' responsibilities during online pileons? Will journalists ever stop being full of s**t with regard to which acts -- screencapping, quote-retweeting, mocking -- are and aren't considered harassment? In the closing segment, the hosts briefly discuss President Trump's interesting strategy of fighting for free speech and open academic inquiry by unleashing the federal government to investigate universities, as one does. Show notes/Links: Rough week for Jesse on Twitter: https://twitter.com/search?q=jesse%20singal&src=typed_query (We said we would include links to the right-wing pieces and tweets bashing the Vox staffer mentioned in the podcast, but whoever wrote this summary began feeling guilty about doing so. 18 Jul 2020 | Episode 21: Bye, Bye Bari And Adios, Andrew | 00:56:12
After Jesse reluctantly reveals some incredibly embarrassing and personal details about his love life in the opening segment, the hosts discuss the week's two big media stories: Bari Weiss's resignation from The New York Times and Andrew Sullivan's firing from New York Magazine. Is this a sign that these outlets are narrowing their windows of acceptable opinion? Was Weiss's treatment in her workplace genuinely unfair, or is she reacting with the same 'safetyism' she has so forcefully criticized? If Jesse and Katie were trapped on a desert island, who would eat who? These and other questions, answered. 25 Jul 2020 | Episode 22: Freddie DeBoer On "The Cult Of Smart" | 00:49:39
After Katie recounts a listener complaint and the cohosts announce a new focus for the podcast, the bulk of the episode consists of an interview Jesse conducted with Freddie deBoer, a brilliant thinker and writer whose first book, "The Cult of Smart: How Our Broken Education System Perpetuates Social Injustice," is a searing indictment of the American education system's most entrenched orthodoxy: the idea that just about any child can succeed academically. The second, patrons-only portion of the interview, a wider-ranging conversations about social media, online leftism, mental health, and other subjects, will be posted by the end of the day on Saturday, 7/25/2020 at the latest, and when it's ready this text will be replaced with a link. 01 Aug 2020 | Episode 23: Welcome To Portland, Where [Indistinct But Horrific Coughs And Screams] | 00:44:30
Things are not going so great in Portland, where months of rowdy and sometimes destructive protests have been met with a federal response that has understandably scared and infuriated residents. But what's really going on there? Have we reached a point where it's basically impossible to find credible, contextualized accounts of complicated situations like this one? 06 Aug 2020 | Episode 24: The Sad Tale Of @Sciencing_Bi, America's Realest Bisexual Indigenous Anthropologist | 00:46:40
In one of the weirdest online controversies yet covered by Blocked and Reported, Katie walks Jesse through the wild, twisting tale of @Sciencing_Bi, a young anthropologist who just wanted to do good work, but who was tragically hindered from achieving this goal by the vicious anti-bisexual currents that dominate academic anthropology -- and by a university hell-bent on LITERALLY working her to death (and cutting her salary 15%). (Apologies for the weird underwater thing going on with Katie's audio for part of the episode -- it was a hardware issue and [probably] won't happen again.) 15 Aug 2020 | Episode 25: Introducing Mount Holey Oak (With Dan Savage) | 00:53:13
In this week's threesome of an episode, which was recorded with enthusiastic consent by everyone involved, Katie and Jesse talk to Dan Savage about the strange case of Alex Morse, the young, gay, Democratic congressional candidate and Massachusetts mayor accused of... well, it isn't quite clear. But what is quickly becoming clear is that Morse appears to have been set up by college kids loyal to his opponent, the incumbent establishment candidate, Richard Neal. What can this episode teach us about power, consent, and the schizophrenic attitude some lefty zoomers have toward sex? Also: Has the queer community lost its sense of humor? Why does everyone forget what it's like to be 20 by the time they are 30? And how hot would president-on-president porn be? (Please do not send this episode to anyone who isn't explicitly asking for it.) (Update, 8/16/2020: Changing the title from "Dan Savage Deciphers Morse Code" to "Introducing Mount Holey Oak" because the latter is funnier and better and we want to use it for the public version dropping tomorrow. 21 Aug 2020 | Episode 26: A Grand Unspurling Of Years Of Cliff Mass Hysteria | 01:01:54
In this week's episode, Jesse addresses an ugly rumor about him posted to Blocked and Reported's Apple Podcast review page. Then the hosts discuss Conor Friedersdorf's article in The Atlantic, "Anti-racist Arguments Are Tearing People Apart," which centers around the accusation that it was racist for a white man to bounce his friend's black baby on his lap during a Zoom call (really!). In the episode's main segment, Katie unspurls the yearslong battle between Cliff Mass and seemingly every progressive in the Seattle metro area, which recently culminated in his media-gig firing after he made an..................... unfortunate comparison on his personal blog. Also: Jesse does a rim-rocking dunk, the hosts discuss a potential cargo-shorts-related spinoff podcast, racist babies are denounced, and Katie unspurls the story of how she was blacklisted from a Seattle radio station. 29 Aug 2020 | Episode 27: Our Summer Of Hell Continues In Kenosha | 00:57:51
After an intro in which Jesse impresses Katie deeply with a brilliant, cutting-edge character he has clearly put a lot of time into developing, the hosts discuss a hellish few days in Kenosha, Wisconsin: first, the police shooting of Jacob Blake, and then Kyle Rittenhouse's killing of two protesters. Doesn't there have to be a better way for police to resolve altercations like the one that ensued with Blake? And will the unrest in Kenosha increase the chances Donald Trump is elected (Katie's view), or is there not yet much evidence to suggest it will (Jesse's)? Plus: You will never guess whether or not the hosts think mainstream outlets are doing a good job covering all this. Show notes/Links: The New York Times: Jacob Blake Was Shackled in Hospital Bed After Police Shot Him - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/28/us/jacob-blake-shackles-assault.html (lots of details about the overall context) The New York Post: This is why Jacob Blake had a warrant out for his arrest - https://nypost.com/2020/08/28/this-is-why-jacob-blake-had-a-warrant-out-for-his-arrest/ NYT: Tracking the Suspect in the Fatal Kenosha Shootings - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/27/us/kyle-rittenhouse-kenosha-shooting-video.html CNN: Kenosha shooting suspect faces more homicide charges - https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/27/us/kenosha-wisconsin-shooting-suspect/index.html Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: What to know about Wisconsin's open-carry laws, self defense and more in Kenosha protest shootings - https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/crime/2020/08/26/wisconsin-open-carry-law-kyle-rittenhouse-legally-have-gun-kenosha-protest-shooting-17-year-old/3444231001/ (though see following links as well) PolitiFact: Did Kyle Rittenhouse break the law by carrying an assault-style rifle in Kenosha? - https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/aug/28/facebook-posts/did-kyle-rittenhouse-break-law-carrying-assault-st/ (note this from the end, indicating ambiguity: "Whether Rittenhouse violated Wisconsin law by possessing a firearm underage is the subject of ongoing litigation.") On the question of whether the misdemeanor doesn't apply here, the action seems to be in this bit from the Wisconsin state code: "This section applies only to a person under 18 years of age who possesses or is armed with a rifle or a shotgun if the person is in violation of s. 941.28 or is not in compliance with ss. 29.304 and 29.593." The argument is that those other conditions don't apply, Rittenhouse wasn't in violation, but we'll get a clear answer on this when he is or isn't convicted. What a mess! But perhaps not all that shocking in our identity-obsessed age. When should we have empathy for people who disgust us (like podcasters)? Then they turn their attention to the controversy over J.K. [Update, 12:10 a.m.: For some reason the version I initially uploaded cut off before the actual ending. Apologies, but everything is fixed now. -J] The hosts discuss the Katie Hill revenge-porn/throuple scandal, which has gotten yet more scandalous in light of a tweetstorm supposedly authored by her former staffers (who are not fans), as well as Facebook's decision to ban QAnon from that platform and Instagram. 17 Oct 2020 | Episode 34: The 1619 Project, Hunter Biden's Sweet Gig, And Facebook And Twitter's Panicky Incompetence | 00:49:15
Katie and Jesse discuss the recent and not-so-recent controversy over The 1619 project, the reputational perils of getting in constant fights with idiots on Twitter, and the tangled story of Hunter Biden, a blind guy at a laptop-repair shop, and a controversial New York Post story. Along the way, Jesse engages in some shockingly casual anti-Ukrainianism. 19 Oct 2020 | Patrons Only: Is Ken Bone Right That Liberals Are Meaner Than Conservatives? | 00:30:44
Well? Is he? Katie and Jesse discuss The Bone Man's recent, controversial tweet, revisit his glorious recent internet-history, talk about their own experiences with left- versus-right-wing haters and obsessives, and -- God help us all -- revisit certain aspects of GamerGate. 23 Oct 2020 | Episode 35: The Problem With "Involuntary Conservatives" And With Accidentally Taking Your Dick Out At Work | 00:55:25
Lotta dicks this week. After addressing some reader reactions to their The 1619 Project segment last week, Katie and Jesse critique the idea of "involuntary conservatives" so enraged by wokeness that they have to vote for Donald Trump. Then the hosts turn their attention to a salacious media story involving a certain New Yorker staff writer and, well, there's no more polite way to put this, but, um, his penis. James Lindsay: "Frankly going to unhappily vote Republican, including Trump, until the left walks this s**t all the way back." - https://twitter.com/ConceptualJames/status/1318412252903604226 Eric Weinstein: "InCons are a force this year. 31 Oct 2020 | Episode 36: Glenn Greenwald Leaves The Intercept And The Section 230 Saber-Rattling Continues | 01:00:16
After Jesse tells Katie a harrowing story about his recent journey into the heart of 'Manhattan,' the hosts discuss Glenn Greenwald's departure from The Intercept, an outlet he helped found back in 2014. Was this a case of censorship, as Greenwald argues, or did he overreact to standard editorial input? Then they turn their attention to Section 230, a law that made the internet what it is today (for better and for worse), and which seems to be attracting bipartisan ire of late, especially among people who don't really understand technology. Greenwald's posts on this controversy: My Resignation From The Intercept - https://greenwald.substack.com/p/my-resignation-from-the-intercept Article on Joe and Hunter Biden Censored By The Intercept - https://greenwald.substack.com/p/article-on-joe-and-hunter-biden-censored Emails With Intercept Editors Showing Censorship of My Joe Biden Article - https://greenwald.substack.com/p/emails-with-intercept-editors-showing The Intercept: Glenn Greenwald Resigns From The Intercept (pushing back on some of GG's claims) - https://theintercept.com/2020/10/29/glenn-greenwald-resigns-the-intercept/ Reason's coverage of Section 230: https://reason.com/tag/section-230/ Slate: Revising the Law That Lets Platforms Moderate Content Will Silence Marginalized Voices - https://slate.com/technology/2020/10/section-230-marignalized-groups-speech.html This is a public episode. 07 Nov 2020 | Episode 37: Democracy Is For Stupid Jerks | 00:54:12
In a very special episode, Katie and Jesse discuss a long, stupid week in which democracy had its way with the American people, vigorously and repeatedly. What should we make of the fact that, while Joe Biden is on the brink of victory, the election was closer than many expected and the Democrats were denied their "blue wave"? Is it because of the patriarchy? White supremacy? Wokeness? Minorities who cling annoyingly to 'agency' and "interpreting the world through their own values, rather than the media's?" Also: Jesse dissects Donald Trump's incredibly lazy, half-assed meltdown, and the hosts debate whether "Voter fraud stole the election for Biden!" is the new "The Russians stole the election for Trump!" (Quick note to patrons: This is the first episode we're doing with an ad break in the middle. Near the top, you'll hear us explain our general ad policy, just so it's clear, but you won't hear the ad itself, during this or any other episode. 14 Nov 2020 | Episode 38: Bari Weiss Is Right, Part II: Philosophy Schmosiphy | 01:04:43
After Katie talks about her new dog-testicles-centered newsletter, the hosts discuss the latest events in the ongoing saga of Helen Lewis's voice getting erased by Ubisoft. Now that Rock Paper Shotgun has sacked a 13-year freelancer for the crime of being sympathetic to Lewis in the site's comments section, it's fair to ask: Does it make sense to fire people for expressing majority opinions? (No. No it doesn't.) Then Katie and Jesse discuss an article in New York Magazine about the internal tumult at The New York Times that, like everything else which happens in this crazy world of ours, simply proves the hosts were right all along. 28 Nov 2020 | Episode 40: Jordan Peterson Causes Tears, And Suzanne Moore Could Use Some Beers | 00:59:46
After a very tense intro during which Jesse berates Katie for not being there when he needed her most, the hosts discuss a Vice News story about staffers at Penguin Random House Canada so overwhelmed by the existence of Jordan Peterson's new book that they broke down crying, and Guardian staffers so overwhelmed by the existence of a debate over certain claims about sex and gender that they drove columnist Suzanne Moore out. 06 Dec 2020 | Episode 41: Inside The Vicious, Deranged, Literally, Metaphorically Violent World Of Young Adult Twitter | 00:53:46
One would not expect an online community devoted to discussion of dragons, vampires, and teenage heroes to be a cesspool of almost unimaginable toxicity. And yet! In this episode, Jesse walks Katie through a recent history of young adult fiction Twitter, aka "YA Twitter," and attempts to explain how it got to be such a Hobbesian hellscape. 12 Dec 2020 | Episode 42: What In The Everloving Name Of Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Is Going On At Google? (with Jon Stokes) | 01:01:17
A major blowup at at Google led to the firing or resignation (depending on who you ask) of Timnit Gebru and accusations that the company's social-justice efforts are performative at best. But behind the scenes, some Googlers are telling a different, slightly more complicated story. Who's right? Katie and Jesse bring on Jon Stokes, an Ars Technica founder who is much better connected in the tech world than they are, to help explain this tangled controversy. (Correction: In the original version of this episode we posted for our patrons, our guest, Jon Stokes, wrongly described Timnit Gebru's academic background as being in sociology, with her having also done some work in computer science. That should have been flipped: She has a PhD from the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, but has done plenty of work that intersects with sociology. Jon also said she was educated at M.I.T., but all her degrees are from Stanford. Whenever an error makes it into the final show, that is 100% the fault of hosts, and we apologize. We've snipped out the audio containing the errors and added a link to Gebru's Stanford page to the top of the show notes.) (More corrections, 12/18/2020: In the original versions of this pocast, both free and patrons-only, Jon also said at approximately 20:40 that Gebru had been at Google since 2016, though he hedged this with an "I think.". She had actually only been at Google since 2019 [YIKES -- actually 2018. Listen to the updated episode for a correction of the correction]. At about 56:30 [free version timestamp], he laid out a storyline, which he presented as informed speculation, in which Jeffrey Dean, head of Google AI, had promised Gebru and some of her allies in 2016 that they could do ethical work. Then, in this telling, Google pivoted to AI, and as a result Gebru and her colleagues' work was seen as a liability and came under more scrutiny. But that storyline doesn’t quite work, as Jon presented it, given that Gebru only arrived at Google in 2019, well after Sundar Pichai announced the company would be “AI first” in 2016. We've snipped out the audio containing these errors and will be discussing all of this episode's errors on the free episode of the podcast set to go live 12/21/2020, and earlier for patrons.) 12 Dec 2020 | Patrons Only: In 1939, TERFs Invaded Poland, Sparking World War II | 00:29:05
For thousands of years, a small cabal of middle-aged lesbians known as 'TERFs' has been quietly pulling the strings behind the scenes, dictating the outcomes of major world events. They have one goal, and one goal alone: harming gender-nonconforming people. And unlike other political groups, who express their views with patience, reason, nuance, and logic, and who never harass anyone online, TERFs play dirty -- always. In this episode, Katie and Jesse applaud a brave expose in The Atlantic that finally pulls the curtain back on this dastardly coven of unhinged she-devils. 19 Dec 2020 | Episode 43: On Mental Health, Youth Gender Dysphoria, And Our Own (Arguable) Fallibility | 01:00:17
In a true sign that anything is possible in this crazy universe of ours, the hosts note that there were some errors in the previous episode and explain exactly what they were (to see them explained in written form, check out that episode's show notes). Then they discuss some mental-health-talk from Jesse that rubbed one reader the wrong way and continue on to the show's main event: a major court decision on youth gender dysphoria in England and an incredibly shoddy article in Foreign Policy about it. (Corrections 10:10 pm 12/18/2020: In the course of correcting last week's episode, we managed to introduce not one but two new errors, and just uploaded a new version in which Jesse breaks in twice to explain them. First, Timnit Gebru's PhD is not in computer science, but rather in electrical engineering. This was just plain sloppiness on someone's part, possibly Jéssé's. Second, Gebru started at Google in 2018, not 2019. In this case, our excuse is that both The New York Times and Columbia Journalism Review wrote that she was hired "last year." This is false, and thank you to the Google employee who reached out to correct us and pointed us to a 2018 tweet in which Gebru talks about her early days at Google. Wired has this right.) 25 Dec 2020 | Episode 44 - Let's Talk About Sex (And Hanukkah And Bad Journalism), Baby (feat. @Aella_Girl) | 01:50:01
In a very special holiday episode, Jesse relates the story of Hanukkah to Katie, his ignorant Gentile friend, with stunning 100% accuracy. Then Jesse makes a fun announcement and an angry announcement. Then the hosts throw to a lengthy interview they did with Aella (@aella_girl on Twitter), a sex worker, OnlyFans one-percenter, and occasional rationalist provocateur who has lived a very interesting life. They talk about drugs and sex and life and online controversy. Plus, Julie Bindel pops in to raise issues with certain contemporary understandings of sex work. 01 Jan 2021 | Episode 45: Two White Podcasters Resolve The Issues Of Racial Slurs And The Controversy Over Alec Baldwin's Esposa Latina | 00:53:19
After reflecting on what a great year 2020 was, except for the many serious hardships Katie endured, the hosts start 2021 with a bang: specifically, a bang that sounds a lot like a racial slur neither of them can say. A white teenager in Virginia didn't get the memo, though -- what should the punishment be, if any? Then Jesse and Katie turn their attention to a story that is rather 'picante': Hilaria Baldwin's attempt at identity-forgery. What an estupido time to be alive! 09 Jan 2021 | Episode 46: The Trumpsurrection Knocks Bean Dad From The Headlines | 01:06:13
After discussing whether Blocked and Reported led directly to the siege on the Capitol, the hosts discuss that strange, terrifying event. They debate whether it can be safely examined in something of a vaccuum, or should be put in the broader context of what appears to be a rise in political violence in the U.S. They also discuss some of the most unhinged responses. Then they talk about Bean Dad. Remember Bean Dad? We yearn for a world in which Bean Dad is the day's most important story on Twitter. 17 Jan 2021 | Episode 47: Should Ben Shapiro Be Deplatformed? Andy Ngo Way! | 00:56:14
After Jesse addresses the totally baseless rumor that he went to Yale Law School, the best law school in the country, where (in this false scenario) he got very good grades, the hosts talk a bit more about online content moderation and then discuss two recent stories about controversial right-wing media figures: the backfired attempt to deplatform Andy Ngo's book, and the widespread outrage among Politico employees that Ben Shapiro was allowed to author an edition of the Playbook newsletter. 23 Jan 2021 | Episode 48: Ethan Watters On The Latest Skirmish In The Never-Ending Memory Wars | 00:54:57
Katie and Jesse bring on Ethan Watters, an author and freelance journalist who helped debunk the recovered-memory craze back in the 1990s, to discuss the most recent development in that area: an article in The Cut that Watters does not think does a good and accurate job relating the (scant) scientific evidence for recovered memories. 06 Feb 2021 | Episode 50: Could Detransitioners Be Any More Bigoted? (With Detransitioner Carey Callahan) | 01:05:04
After Jesse tells Katie a touching story about shoveling food into his face-hole, and the hosts discuss his latest Twitter-feud -- this one with a noted New Yorker food critic (not staff writer) -- the hosts discuss a Slate article about detransition that seems geared at painting that communtiy in a particularly negative and reactionary light. But Cary Callahan, a detransitioner, therapist, and activist (who, to be fair, Katie and Jesse already knew before this all popped up), doesn't think this is a fair assessment, so she joins the pod for a conversation about her own experiences and what she thinks the Slate article misses. 28 Mar 2021 | Episode 57: There's No Accountability To Accountability Lists These Days (feat. Jonathan Chait) | 01:19:32
Jesse and Katie talk about Jesse's inclusion on a very special list of very special bigots, Katie's addition to the ever-growing list of people who got Doyle'd, and an annoyingly one-sided front-page New York Times piece about online censorship. Then they throw to an interview Jesse did with Jon Chait, an excellent writer and thinker who had a big impact on Jesse's own work over the years. 03 Apr 2021 | Episode 58: We Hope Buying Jesse's Book Provides An Opportunity For Introspection And Growth | 00:55:31
After Katie opens up about a gruesome injury and Jesse tells a story about a listener's travails at an upscale New York City climbing gym, the hosts discuss Jesse's book, which is out on Tuesday. Specifically, they dig into Comprehensive Soldier Fitness, an anti-PTSD Army program that doesn't work, and the implicit association test, an anti-racism test that... doesn't work. Also, it turns out both hosts are kinda scared of bridges, which feels like something they should dig into at some later date. After Jesse makes a shocking announcement (he's leaving the podcast in pursuit of greater glory), the hosts talk about a spate of bad GOP bills seeking to ban puberty blockers and hormones for minors and how difficult it is to communicate accurate, honest information to the public about this subject. Then they discuss a story Jesse wrote for Reason about a particularly crazy campus blowup in which a bunch of innocent white people were traumatized (physically) by disagreement. 29 May 2021 | Episode 66: It Is A Bad Idea To Try To Shout Down Detransitioners | 00:54:05
After Jesse discusses his imminent Upstate death, the hosts turn toward a 60 Minutes segment on detransitioners and the rather unhinged response to it. Then they talk about the lab-leak hypothesis of the coronavirus’s origins, which may have been preemptively debunked by overeager journalists seeking to protect us all from racism and Trumpism. 60 Minutes segment: https://www.cbsnews.com/video/transgender-health-care-60-minutes-video-2021-05-23/#x More background on it: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/60-minutes-transgender-health-care-issues-2021-05-23/ GLAAD freaks out: https://twitter.com/glaad/status/1396665047645138945 Chase Strangio also unhappy: https://twitter.com/chasestrangio/status/1396828255639019524 Jack Turban stuff: -he wanted to know where 60 Minutes found its sources: https://twitter.com/jack_turban/status/1396992770733056001 -Turban’s Pediatrics study correlating desire/receipt of puberty blockers with suicidality: “After adjustment for demographic variables and level of family support for gender identity, those who received treatment with pubertal suppression, when compared with those who wanted pubertal suppression but did not receive it, had lower odds of lifetime suicidal ideation,” but when it came to all the other variables examined in this model — “past-year suicidality, ... past-month severe psychological distress, past-month binge drinking, and lifetime illicit drug use” — the link was statistically insignificant. In the episode Jesse slightly misdescribes this finding, making it sound like the researchers found a link between puberty-blocker access in this group and their general mental health. That link was non-significant, though. The significant link was between puberty-blocker access and lifetime (but not past-year) suicidality. This doesn’t affect Jesse’s argument that one could just as easily look at this data and conclude that some of these cases are explained by clinicians being unwilling to put actively suicidal kids on puberty blockers. There are plenty of other potential explanations, too — zeroing in on one particular causal story (in this case, the kids became suicidal because they couldn’t access hormones) is a common and well-known error when interpreting this sort of correlational finding. From On The Media: Transcript: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/episodes/trans-formations-on-the-media “There are a set of criteria that an adolescent needs to meet and they need to have this diagnosis of gender dysphoria. And that diagnosis requires identifying as a gender different than your sex assigned at birth for at least six months. Many clinics will, on top of that diagnosis, require much more assessment and evaluation before they'll offer any kind of medical interventions. Once kids reach, usually age 16, but in certain clear cases age 14, they might start estrogen or testosterone. General surgery is not offered until adulthood. Often these things are all conflated. You'll hear things like seven year olds having genital surgery or little little kids being given estrogen, but that's not how it works.” One example of many of the surgery claim being false: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29507933/ And we have numerous examples of kids being given blockers and hormones on a far hastier timeline than what Turban lays out here. There is no mention of providers who don’t follow the proper guidelines. That said, Turban is correct that some clinics go too far in the other direction. “There are a very small number of people who do regret the interventions, but from all the research we have so far, this seems to be on the order of like less than 1 percent.” There does not appear to be a single study published by an American affirming clinic on regret rates. This isn’t nitpicking, because there has been a genuine revolution in youth transgender care in recent years that is a major shift away from ‘gatekeeping.’ So past studies on regret rates, whether youth or adult contexts, simply can’t tell us much about how to gauge the performance of contemporary American gender-affirming providers. There’s at least some evidence, from one very-well-known affirming clinic, of a high lost-to-followup rate — above 40% — which offers circumstantial evidence of kids discontinuing their hormonal treatment: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29056436/ That said, it’s also possible they continued treatment elsewhere, or that some other explanation can account for this. Either way, a lost-to-followup rate of 40% is quite high and might be a warning sign. -Turban has exhibited basic unfamiliarity with the DSM-IV versus -5 criteria for gender dysphoria, as he subsequently seemed to acknowledge by correcting one of his articles: https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1341502177920073731 Lab leak hypothesis: Long NY Mag piece: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/coronavirus-lab-escape-theory.html Very in-depth forensic account from Yglesias of who said what when: https://www.slowboring.com/p/the-medias-lab-leak-fiasco NPR declares the theory ‘debunked’ more than a year ago: https://www.npr.org/2020/04/22/841925672/scientists-debunk-lab-accident-theory-of-pandemic-emergence Slate: https://slate.com/technology/2020/02/coronavirus-bioweapon-conspiracy-theories.html This is a public episode. (UPDATE: This essay provides a lot of background on Akwaeke Emezi and I'm annoyed we missed it while prepping this episode. 01 Jul 2021 | Episode 71: Katie and Barclays Give Unsolicited Advice, And An Update To A Story About A Story About Identifying As An Attack Helicopter | 00:52:25
After Katie and Jesse discuss their July 4th plans, the hosts talk about Nikole Hannah-Jones winning her tenure battle, Barclays' cringeworthy contribution to Pride discourse, and the complicated tale of the publishing and unpublishing and re-publishing of "I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter," aka "Helicopter Story." Show notes/Links: Nikole Hannah-Jones stuff: https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2021/06/university-nhj-tenure-decision https://twitter.com/nhannahjones/status/1410326615876378626?s=20 Slate advice columns: -Racist white son wants to learn Spanish: https://slate.com/human-interest/2021/06/maximizing-sleep-with-infants-parenting-advice-from-care-and-feeding.html Straight woman in a Classic Millennial Sex Pickle: https://slate.com/human-interest/2020/01/straight-woman-dating-on-grindr.html Katie's response: https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2020/01/30/42716089/do-straight-women-belong-on-gay-datings-apps-no Note back to Katie: “Hey! I'm the odious Slate letter writer you covered in this piece - https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2020/01/30/42716089/do-straight-women-belong-on-gay-datings-apps-no. Just wanted to say that your take was 100% accurate--I was being very shitty and very dumb. Should have accepted being straight and worked on my own gender-role-angst instead of trying to drag queer people into my b******t a LOT earlier in my life, good lord. Anyway! Belated thanks for the wakeup call, and sorry I'm opting for the anonymous-reddit means of contacting you, like a coward - just going this route because I am, in fact, a coward.” More classic Slate advice columns: https://slate.com/human-interest/2019/09/child-sociopath-counseling-care-and-feeding.html “We live in a very multicultural and socioeconomically diverse area in South Florida. We are white, and both my husband and I are well-off professionals. Our 4½-year-old daughter has grown up socializing with all types of children and has a close friend who is black and one who is Brazilian. …” https://slate.com/human-interest/2020/06/colorblind-parenting-race-care-and-feeding.html My family is white, and we live in a predominately white neighborhood. However, our kids (twin boys) went to a local public charter elementary and middle school that was very diverse. When it was time for high school, our twins were lucky enough to have their closest friends from elementary and middle school attend the same school. Each of the boys had a diverse group of friends, and they were taken aback, as freshmen in high school, by the way other kids sat at tables in same-race clusters. The kids who’d gone to our (small) middle school, where tables were assigned by grade, continued to hang out at lunch together as a mixed group. https://slate.com/human-interest/2020/10/kid-police-obsession-care-and-feeding.html “My lovely, outgoing son is 5 years old. For the past year or so, he has been absolutely obsessed with police officers. He loves their uniforms, cars, and dogs. He tells everyone he wants to be a policeman when he grows up, and whenever he sees a police officer, he runs up to them and says hi. In our overwhelmingly white suburb, this is always well received; cops are usually idle and don’t mind letting him touch their cars or look at their outfits…” Q. My brother, a police officer, is getting blacklisted by my friends: My brother (he’s older by two years) is a police officer. This was his childhood dream, and he’s dedicated his entire life to making it happen. Prudie, he’s wonderful. He leads his department’s restorative justice seminars, he was fighting for anti-bias training three years ago before it was widespread, and he spends much of his free time at the local rec center mentoring at-risk youth. https://slate.com/human-interest/2021/06/kimono-cultural-appropriation-care-and-feeding.html “My husband’s closest friend from childhood is Japanese American, and although he moved back to Japan after college, they are still very close. He’s our daughters’ godfather, and they think of him and his wife as another uncle and aunt (we’re also called “Uncle” and “Auntie” by his kids). For our daughter’s fifth birthday, they sent her a sweet gift of a box full of Japanese candies, a stuffed toy, and a kimono in her size. It’s absolutely gorgeous, but I’m hesitant to let her wear it, as much as she’s begged us to let her dress up and show it to her friends. I know how big of an issue cultural appropriation is, and I don’t want to let her think that somebody else’s culture is a costume. She has a lot of anti-racist children’s books, and books about kids from other cultures celebrating holidays and traditions, and this could be a great way for us to talk about the problem of white people appropriating other cultures and using them as costumes—but also, our friends have been asking us if she liked her kimono, and I don’t know what to tell them! I will confess: I don’t want to be thought of as another insensitive white lady who lets her kids “dress up” as stereotypes of other cultures, and that may be part of what’s holding me back from letting her wear it, so I think an outside perspective might help. What should I do—let her wear it, or talk to her about why she can’t?” https://slate.com/human-interest/2021/05/masculinity-incel-crisis-care-and-feeding.html My son is 14, and he’s coping with identity issues that I could really use some advice about. Last night, he was complaining about English class. “All we talk about is stuff like, I dunno. How women are so great and can defend themselves and s**t.” Alarm bells, right? I probed a little, and he started getting upset. He talked about the girls in his class being aggressive towards the boys, accusing them of … he wasn’t sure what. Mumbled a few things about sexism, the patriarchy. “You know, this whole ‘kill all men’ thing.’” And with that, he burst into tears. “I’m white—I’m male—and I’m probably straight!” he sobbed (at 14, he maintains that the jury is still out on that last one). “It’s like, I can’t say anything! And the girls, they can say anything they like!” Of course, we talked about those girls being out of line, but also about how real sexism is—that he can be proud of who he is and support feminism (and Black Lives Matter, and LGBTQ rights, etc.) at the same time. And ignore purposefully provocative stuff like #killallmen. Still, I’m concerned. My feeling is that he’s pretty well inoculated against racist and homophobic propaganda. But clearly, he’s struggling with his masculinity. I really worry that he might stumble across a few clever Jordan Peterson videos and end up falling down some nasty male-power incel rabbit hole … Do you have any advice as to how to deal with this? In particular, do you know of any good age-appropriate books or podcasts or shows or whatever that deal with these topics—especially the “crisis of masculinity”—in a sensitive way? A way that’s in sync with feminist values?” When Savage love and Dear Prudie got the same question and gave opposite advice: https://slate.com/human-interest/2021/03/husband-sexting-cousin-dear-prudence-advice.html https://www.metrotimes.com/detroit/savage-love-devastation/Content?oid=26562553 Back when Prudie was good: Barclays: https://www.barclays.co.uk/diversity/?linkId=100000052339480 -“Barclays agreed Thursday to pay the United States $2 billion for allegedly deceiving investors about the quality of mortgage deals that fueled the 2008 financial crisis.”: https://money.cnn.com/2018/03/29/investing/barclays-mortgage-settlement/index.html -A thread from the BARPod subreddit supporting Katie's Lesbian Extinction Theory (LET): https://np.reddit.com/r/BlockedAndReported/comments/ob7ckj/im_a_lesbian_and_just_found_out_yet_another_one Isabel Fall / “I Sexually Identify As An Attack Helicopter”: -The story itself: https://archive.is/oXDEt#selection-483.0-483.43 -Jesse's rundown: https://jessesingal.substack.com/p/the-deeply-depressing-unpublishing -Vox: https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/22543858/isabel-fall-attack-helicopter -N.K. We were tipped off to this whole Bounty Hunters thing. I'd love to send you a few questions about it -- particularly about what it's been like to watch this blow up in the way it has, and to see so many people taking it seriously. Any interest? -Jesse https://jessesingal.substack.com/about SCD: Text or call? Jesse: Your call. I can send you a URL to the thing we use to record the podcast -- that way we could talk by voice but keep you anonymous if you wanted. SCD: I’m at work and won’t be free until Sunday really, if you wanna shoot some questions here on drama I’ll answer, but tbh I don’t know if I have anything that interesting to add. Jesse: All right let's maybe chat Sunday. In the meantime, just send me anything you're cool sharing about why you did the original post and what it's been like watching it blow up. Thanks. SCD: Surprise. I made the sub one day before work in about 12 minutes before work, posted the thread, and only had time to check it once or twice before it got banned six hours later. It really just speaks to the current state of the culture war that this thing was ever taken seriously by anyone. So many people on both sides are searching for that next 5-minute hate so hard that whether it’s even real or not is often an afterthought. I’ve lost a lot of respect for journalists, even 2 minutes of digging through my post history would have revealed that it was an obvious troll. Jesse: So your thought process is simply “This would be a funny thing to seed”? I feel like folks who are less online have trouble understanding that someone might say something online they don't agree with in real life, and that this leads to a lot of bad coverage of internet controversies. Any thoughts on this side of stuff? I feel like trolling is just generally misunderstood, sometimes willfully. Jesse: Do you think part of it is a reaction against piousness and censoriousness? Even as a grown adult there's some part of me that responds to being told I'm not allowed to say something by just wanting to scream it. It feels like the most intense and creative trolling centers on the most hot-button issues, and I feel like that could help explain why. SCD: Oh that's a huge part of it, there's actually a huge overlap between rdrama and r/stupidpol users ( a subreddit dedicated to critiquing identity politics and wokeness as a whole). Sanctimonious, moral busy bodies are a favorite trolling target, because they’re literally everywhere online these days and take themselves very seriously. This website itself is a product of our original subreddit getting censored. SCD: The sub was up for six hours and had only 63 members before it was banned. The vast majority of people who were potentially misinformed from it stemmed from the journalists who decided to run a story on an obvious troll attempt. I mean yeah obviously I share some blame for making it in the first place, but I’m not gonna lose any sleep over it. This is a public episode. 25 Sep 2021 | Episode 83: Historically, The Anatomy And Physiology Of Bodies With Vaginas Has Been Neglected (early access, ad-free) | 01:01:30
(Apologies -- initially uploaded this with the wrong episode number/URL, so here's a corrected redo.) An update on Katie's face, Catie's Correction Corner, the world's only black nonbinary conservative, the bizarre newspeak pertaining to females being embraced by major liberal institutions, personals, and Ellen Pao's very strange New York Times op-ed about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. Show notes/Links: Full, correct context for Daniel Lavery criticizing someone for reporting a home break-in: https://www.reddit.com/r/DearPrudence/comments/lzge8x/comment/gqdp0vz Troubled Daily Beast piece about Carson Griffith: https://www.thedailybeast.com/gawker-writers-quit-over-editorial-director-carson-griffiths-offensive-tweets-workplace-comments The articles notes in its subhed: “The new site’s only two full-time writers exited Wednesday in protest of editorial director Carson Griffith’s offensive remarks about everything from race to penis size.” There is no subsequent explanation of the claim that Griffith made an “offensive remark” about penis size — instead, she forwarded an email thread in which other people were joking about someone’s penis size, but which also contained information pertinent to a potential story idea. Tani writes: “Kosoff additionally told HR of an exchange in which Griffith took a dismissive stance towards the recruiting of a writer who identifies as non-binary. Kosoff, who was tasked with recruiting some new editorial staff, wrote in a Slack message that she was going to meet with a potential staffer ‘who is a person of color and nonbinary (uses they/them pronouns).’ When she returned from the meeting two hours later, Griffith initially laughed off the preferred pronouns. ‘lol is [name redacted] a girl?’ Griffith asked.” But Slack logs included in Griffith’s complaint show that when Griffith said that, it wasn’t in the context of responding to this individual being nonbinary, but was rather simply a question about their sex/pronouns: https://postimg.cc/yJwcRZ6k Now, this screenshot doesn’t include the mention of “who is a person of color and nonbinary (uses they/them pronouns),” so it’s unclear when that was said. But there’s no evidence, within this excerpt, of Griffith responding directly to the applicant being nonbinary. Tani writes: “The two reporters also relayed to human-resources instances in which they believed Griffith—who holds a management role at the site—expressed an uncomfortably negative attitude on issues related to workplace diversity. In a Slack message reviewed by The Daily Beast, Griffith seemed to brag to Gawker staff that she had gotten them out of a company-wide diversity training session, though neither Kosoff nor Breslaw had asked her to do so. The two ended up attending.” Griffith claims she did not know this was a diversity meaning, and sure enough in the Slack log in question there is no mention of that aspect of it — she simply says she got them out of most of a long meeting that had been blocked off on their calendar (apologies for low quality): https://postimg.cc/PvqDsz2V/483230fa ACLU tweet: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1439259891064004610 Interview in The Atlantic in which Emma Green asks the ACLU’s Louise Melling about language like “pregnant people”: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2021/09/pregnant-people-gender-identity/620031/ AOC on AC360 (note that she uses “menstruating person,” not ‘menstruator’ as Jesse says in the show): https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2021/09/08/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-texas-abbott-abortion-ban-ac360-intv-sot-vpx.cnn Transcript: https://transcripts.cnn.com/show/acd/date/2021-09-07/segment/01 Lancet tweet/cover: https://twitter.com/TheLancet/status/1441372277786951681 Who Ellen Pao is: https://www.thecut.com/2017/08/ellen-pao-silicon-valley-sexism-reset-excerpt.html Her complicated departure: https://www.vox.com/2015/7/10/11614622/pao-out-as-reddit-ceo-co-founder-huffman-takes-over “The Perverse Incentives That Help Incels Thrive in Tech”: https://twitter.com/ekp/status/991817194987114496 Even crazier: https://www.wired.com/story/ellen-pao-the-perverse-incentives-that-help-incels-thrive-in-tech/ Her crazy NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/15/opinion/elizabeth-holmes-trial-sexism.html Actual information about what Holmes did: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/16/podcasts/the-daily/elizabeth-holmes-trial-theranos-silicon-valley.html DoJ release noting she was was indicted alongside Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani who is very much male!): https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/theranos-founder-and-former-chief-operating-officer-charged-alleged-wire-fraud-schemes Tom Cotton op-ed: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/03/opinion/tom-cotton-protests-military.html This is a public episode. 06 Apr 2020 | Episode 3: Nice White Ladies Pay To Get Called Racist Over Dinner | 00:46:34
Jesse has a bad cough. Is it coronavirus, or just Jewishness? Katie, meanwhile, isn't quite sure what plant she turned into tea last week. Will either cohost outlive April? We'll see soon enough. In the meantime, the hosts debate whether coronavirus will kill the online culture wars, then segue accidentally into a discussion of gender identity and the complicated ways in which attempts to reduce misgendering can lead, as Katie has experienced, to yet more misgendering. Then Jesse complains about the Twitter cops who came at Jill Filipovic for her perfectly accurate tweet about the Spanish Legion (being hot), and both cohosts struggle to wrap their minds around the phenomenon of nice white ladies paying Sairo Rao and Regina Jackson to come to dinner at their houses and call them racist. 24 Mar 2020 | Episode 1: The Pilot | 00:37:46
IT'S HERE. In the pilot episode of Blocked and Reported, hosts Katie Herzog and Jesse Singal explain what the podcast is, and Katie reveals a very special Pandemic Announcement. The hosts also discuss the "Why I Am Leaving The Left" subgenre, debate whether insanely irresponsible pandemic behavior has changed their views on internet shaming, and offer some suggestions of wonderful Old Internet relics that can help listeners ride out the end of the world in an entertaining manner. 20 Apr 2020 | Episode 5: Katie And Jesse Decide Who Is Valid | 00:59:35
In a shocking moment that definitely wasn't scripted, Katie almost singlehandedly immolates the podcast by dropping a horrific slur just seconds into the episode. After the cohosts recover their composure, they discuss an outrage story about Canadian military pronouns, Alex Berenson's coronavirus contrarianism, and the fairly nonsensical process people follow to decide what they believe. Jesse then tries to unpack Online Validity Discourse, leading the cohosts to discuss fascinating and provocative questions like "What does it even mean to be valid?," "How many people can you have sex with before you're not asexual anymore?," and "Would Jesse dress better if he were gay?" The cohosts close out the show with a brief chat about Blocked and Reported's possible Patreon future, and a request for listeners to email in to let them know what sorts of perks they'd be interested in. 30 Mar 2020 | Episode 2: "You Essentially Stole My Podcast" | 00:57:50
Less than a week post-launch, Blocked and Reported faces a profoundly serious threat to its existence: an accusation of Grand Theft Audio from one of the hosts of Blocked Party, an obscure upstart podcast that may have copied Blocked and Reported's name. After reflecting on their transgressions, looking deeply inward, and promising to do better (not really), Katie and Jesse move to on a discussion about Katie's pandemic shotgun wedding. Then they talk about right-wing coronavirus misinformation on social media and debate whether networks should stop airing Donald Trump's press conferences live. During the show's final two segments, they respond to a reader question about Elizabeth Warren fans — are Bernie Bros and Liz Lasses really so different, after all? — and dissect a Washington Post article about some random dude's very offensive tweet, in the process laying out Blocked and Reported's Official Stance on whether old people should be converted to food. After the pod gets off to yet another rough start thanks to a vicious anti-bread tirade Katie levels at Jesse, the cohosts heat up some leftovers from the last episode by disentangling Karens and Beckys (sorry, Karens and Beckys!) and further explaining their views on expertise. Then they discuss "Why Won't Woke Boys Pay For Sex?," the MEL Magazine article that lit Twitter on fire last week: Is Progressive Sex-Worker Discourse in line with most people's intuitions about the nature of prostitution? Is it politically problematic to not want to pay your friends for sex? In the final segment, the cohosts move on to "I Left New York for Greener Pastures — and a Puppy," a controversial Meghan Daum article in GEN. Is it wrong to leave New York for other, less-infected parts of the country, potentially bringing the virus with you? Along the way Jesse and Katie are joined by a special guest, who may or may not be Meghan herself. You'll just have to listen and/or look at the title of the episode to find out. 10 May 2020 | BONUS EPISODE: Chrissy Teigen Vs Alison Roman Vs The White Women Of Twitter | 00:24:35
During an emergency session of Blocked and Reported, Katie and Jesse discuss the controversy sparked by Alison Roman's decision to go hard at Chrissy Teigen and Marie Kondo. Just how racist is Alison Roman? Just how woman-of-color is Chrissy Teigen? Is the phrase "please to buy" anti-Asian or anti-Eastern-European? These and other highly sensitive questions, answered definitively! Plus: Katie and Jesse reveal their favorite appropriated foods. Show notes: What Alison Roman wants (https://newconsumer.com/2020/05/alison-roman-interview/) (The New Consumer) -You can email the hosts at blockedandreportedpodcast@gmail.com (mailto:blockedandreportedpodcast@gmail.com), or follow the show on Twitter at @thebarpod (https://mobile.twitter.com/thebarpod). 11 May 2020 | We Were (Joe) Biden Our Time But We (Candace) Owens You An Episode About Tara Reade | 00:48:52
After Jesse gets things off to a fantastic start with an uplifting story about dog feces, the hosts finally relent and discuss the Joe Biden/Tara Reade situation. Does this case reveal the limits of "believe women"? Of trying to pretend long-ago accusations can be hashed out apolitically? Is anyone acting in good faith here? Then the hosts move on to Candace Owens and her censored-by-Twitter tweet calling for her Michigan followers to defy the government. What is the proper role for a private but exceptionally inlfuential institution like Twitter in a situation like this? The episode finishes with another story from Jesse, this one about his extremely unpleasant online run-in with Owens in 2016. Jesse Singal provides an update to the update to his San Francisco party for Blocked and Reported Primos, as well as his struggle to plan it. Katie Herzog gets introduced to gaming through the new Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Legacy. The controversy over JK Rowling’s views on gender issues have now spilled over from Twitter to the gaming press, Discord, and Twitch. Streamers are afraid to play it, servers are being raided, and writers are refusing to review it. Plus, not-so-famous actor Armond Hammer discusses tying up women, eating their ribs, and stealing their toes, which then gets turned into an NFT.
