04 Jan 2025₿HS034: WOW Factory with Bridgette Johnson00:52:50

SHOW TOPICS:

Bridgette brings the receipts.  It’s passion, not a teaching degree, that unlocks education.  She creatively meets kids where they are, e.g., dealing with developmentally delayed, non-verbal, traumatized, beaten, autistic, et al.  She is a grandmother entrepreneur!  She is starting her own preschool based on how kids really learn, not based on fiat curriculums.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Mother of five decided to go back into the workforce
  • Went back to college at 45
  • Using a keyboard to make jingles was one of her early creative ways to reach children
  • The “five senses” is one of the favorites with the kids
  • She became DJ BJ the rapping school teacher
  • She was encouraged to record her songs in a studio after which she wrote a book to go along with each
  • She started a business, Creatively Invented, which produces catchy, hip hop educational products for home and school
  • Bridgette calls this “edutainment”
  • The principal began sending her all the problem kids
  • Another popular book was her “Use Your Manners” which features two kids as superheroes, “Suprepreneurs”
  • She picked things the kids like but is not in the curriculum, e.g., microphones, robots, marble trees, pencils with themes like Ninja Turtles, shaving cream, marsh mellows, giant rain sticks, magnets,
  • In one particular challenge case, she let the kid lead the class
  • In another case a kid went from nonverbal to talking
  • There’s not just one way to teach kids
  • Large rooms help a lot
  • She also would get dressed up in different costumes
  • For some, teaching is a paycheck.  For some like Bridgette, teaching is a passion.
  • Bridgette strongly recommends getting involved with the community, do research, talk to people, learn what extra curriculum activities are available
  • Social emotional piece is critical to reaching kids
  • She is launching a preschool, WOW Factory Academy, Inc.  WOW stands for “wonders of the world”.  No time limits, edutainment, invention-education, manners, performing arts, creative art, financial literacy, engineering, other “wow” experiences.
  • Superpreneur Project is for pre-school to 3rd grade, teaches money principles and how to start their own business, includes a journal and flashcards

30 Nov 2024₿HS031: Homeschooling in India with Vikas and Chhaya00:55:37

SHOW TOPICS:

Learn about homeschooling in India.  Vikas and Chhaya Yadav let their son make decisions, including whether to homeschool and to choose subjects he is most interested in.  It’s a customized curriculum at a customized speed.  They allow him to follow his natural talents and interests versus prescribed subjects and pursuit of highest paid professions.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Homeschooling is legal in India but students still need to take mandatory exams
  • Vikas and Chhaya’s approach is to let their son follow his curiosity
  • They let their son decide whether to continue homeschooling or public schooling
  • Letting kids make mistakes or have to admit they do not know something
  • They leverage multiple resources, e.g., Kahn Academy
  • They spent some time in Peru, where the education culture is more western and very different from Asia culture
  • Identity politics are a global problem, India has similar trends that the US has in terms of work environments that were once meritocracies but now have discrimination, everyone is now categorized by their religion or caste
  • In India, mandatory exams fundamentally impact kids’ futures so tremendous energy and time is focused on preparing for taking exams
  • With homeschooling, you have a 1:1 student to teacher ratio versus 30:1 or 50:1 in public schools
  • Teaching through story is powerful, one of the examples they used was reading “The Martian” with their son
  • Public school students are not confident of what they want but are still expected to make a decision what to pursue in college, but nature is designed for us to be flexible, for us to change our decisions
  • Following natural talents and interests versus prescribed subjects and pursuit of highest paid professions, the latter leads people to jobs they dislike and perform poorly in
  • Now is the time to try homeschooling, you can always go back to state schools
  • Best teacher we can be is to be ourselves to our children

 RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW:

  • “The Martian” by Andy Weir
  • Homeschooling group, swashikshan.
  • Another organization, Shikshantar. They have a university with no curriculum.
  • Annual LSUC (Learning Societies Unconference) is much larger than just home schooling
  • Vikas’ website, https://thevikas.com/

05 Jul 2024₿HS027: Fundamentals – Cultivating Love of Reading01:01:23

SHOW TOPICS:

Today’s show is part of our fundamentals series where we focus on practical ideas and resources.  This episode is especially for younger parents and is dedicated to developing the love of reading mindset.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Picking the “right” reading material in the context of cultivating the right attitude
  • Managing parental expectations is also important because your attitude will impact children’s feelings about reading
  • Features to look at when kids first start to read:

1.      Books that kids can actually touch and get dirty, e.g., choose books that have texture

2.    Books that young kids can easily flip the pages, e.g., cardboard pages, a size they can easily handle

  • Anything, even gimmicky books, that engages their interest is good
  • Library sales are great places to find cheap kids books.  So are church rummage sales, garage sales and homeschool bookstores that sell used materials.
  • Just get kids used to seeing books everywhere … the bedrooms, the car, the stroller, the bathroom
  • Giving kids choices with piles of books gives them the opportunity to choose what look interesting
  • Tali found that cartoons with simple lines and large fonts worked best with her kids
  • She also did not use phonics to teach kids how to read
  • Coloring books and sticker books help grab children’s interest
  • Choose materials less because of the specific topic, even Bitcoin, but more for positive feelings
  • Use tools, e.g., a ruler with the center area cut out, to help younger readers focus and train their eyes
  • Stay away from dumb-downed and abridged editions
  • Let kids gets pulled into stories, even ones being read by relatives or audible books
  • Set the example … let your kids see you read
  • Books allow readers to use their imagination.  Exercise the creativity muscle.
  • It is a disservice to expect certain abilities and skills at certain ages.
  • Yes, high-time-preference fiat-stress can be a challenge but being aware of this, you can still make reading a priority
  • Subtitles on for all movies and shows!
  • It’s better to play read stories than to give kids an ipad to watch cartoons.  Cartoons have dumbed-down and overly-simplified language.
  • Scott compares kids’ growing brains to AI language learning
  • Get copies of original, unabridged classics.  Build a library.  There are technocrats who are systematically trying to ban, re-write or otherwise remove them.
  • Don’t lecture while reading, e.g., with Bitcoin kids books
  • Get them involved, e.g., asking questions while reading to them
  • There’s nothing more that the child wants than to be with you.  Your presence matters more than book selection.

28 Sep 2023₿HS002: Physical Freedom = Enhanced Growth00:40:04

SHOW TOPIC:

By not controlling everything for kids, and by not protecting them too much, kids better learn how to live in this world.  In this conversation, Tali and Scott go deep on how allowing kids to be in physically free environments helps more than intellectual and physical development.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • A feature of taking self-custody of education is being in control of the agenda and the environment
  • Separating parents from kids enhances the state’s control over the population
  • Public schools focus on and reward conformity
  • The unique approach of a Japanese kindergarten (see TED Talk link in the resources section)
  • Staying physical healthy is part of a low-time-preference life
  • “Don’t control them too much”
  • “Kids need small doses of danger”
  • “Kids need noise”
  • You have SO MANY resources within this community … Commitment is the first step
  • Help make this show more valuable … What do you want to learn about homeschooling?

16 Jan 2025₿HS035: Prepare the Child for the Path, Not the Path for the Child01:30:47

SHOW TOPICS:

Ever feel overwhelmed about homeschooling?  You’ll find inspiration in Leigh Ann and Jason’s story.  They are homeschooling six kids!!!  They cover how it feels to get started, using analogies like super-bananas, and general principles, like teaching kids to govern themselves.  Also, since Jason is the ambassador concierge at Satlantis, we preview this Nostr/Bitcoin project at the end of the program.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Leigh Ann and Jason’s background
  • Jason is the one who suggested homeschooling to Leigh Ann
  • Doesn’t hurt to try homeschooling
  • It is so nice spending time with your children
  • They don’t separate parenting from homeschooling
  • Their grandfather would quiz the kids to test the effectiveness of homeschooling
  • Turning the tables, when your kids know more about subjects than you
  • Jason’s personal education experiences
  • Compliments from others about how well behaved their kids are, testament to homeschooling kids socializing with people of all ages
  • Managing time, allowing for flow, following the unschooling approach
  • Learning is best done through experience, it is not like uploading Kungfu in the Matrix
  • Low time preference mentality applied to homeschooling includes investing learning skills, e.g., reading, early
  • “Living books”, aka Charlotte Mason method, learning history through history
  • The power of choice, e.g., letting kids select subjects they want to learn deeply
  • One of their favorites is “Vincent's Starry Night and Other Stories: A Children's History of Art” by Michael Bird
  • Self-custody of parenting means kids can explore topics outside of the limited state-dictated curriculum
  • Ultimate goal is to prepare kids for the adult world
  • All of their kids are in Bitcoin
  • Power of analogy … Using the story of “The Super Banana” to explain Bitcoin to a 10 year old
  • Teach correct principles and let people govern themselves, let them verify for themselves and live them
  • Kids are worth more than Super Bananas (Bitcoin)
  • Jason’s journey from outside-in (Bitcoin can save the world) to inside-out (the personal revolution)
  • God’s hand guiding us along the way
  • Homeschooling is what you make it
  • It takes a lot of time investment to find good homeschooling resources
  • Leigh Ann’s recommendations: “The Good and the Beautiful”, “Starfall”, and “I See Sam”
  • Homeschooling allows parent-teachers to adjust programs 1-on-1 to adapt and fit individual learning styles of each child, contrast with the one-size-fits-all-approach public-school teachers have to use to teach classes of 20+ students
  • Strengths, weaknesses and interests … the key is to listen to your kids, do not buy into institutional standards e.g., Common Core or No Child Left Behind (Jason calls the latter socialized education)
  • Don’t replicate the system you pulled your kids out of, i.e., public schools, it will stress you out
  • Kids naturally want to learn, laziness is a myth

02 Jun 2024₿HS026: The Lords Have Spoken ... about Homeschooling01:39:56

SHOW TOPICS:

Jim Lord and Gabe Lord share their respective generational perspectives on being on the leading edge of homeschooling in the 1980’s.  Both are Bitcoiners.  Both are veterans.  Listen to how the values of all these areas are intertwined.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Perspective of 2 generations:  military family pioneering homeschooling in the 80’s.
  • In this case, it was the Dad who oranged-pilled his son.
  • Both bringing Bitcoin to veterans through Operation Bitcoin
  • There are many correlations between veterans, Bitcoiners and homeschoolers.
  • How Jim Lord and his fellow homeschooling parents responded to uniformed law enforcement serving them a subpoena for educational child neglect
  • The government does NOT love you
  • States receive stipends from the federal government for military dependents attending public school.  This creates unhealthly monetary incentives for the states to act against homeschooling parents.
  • Government officials are typically cowards
  • Testimony of how advanced students can get poor grades because they are artificially slowed down with standardized curriculum.  Smart students are bored out of their minds.
  • Holding kids back emotionally and/or academically, e.g., because of financial incentives, is disturbing and the reason why taking self-custody of education is so critical.
  • Bad things happen when good people don’t stand up.  But not everyone has resources to make a stand.
  • Support is difficult to find because of trends, e.g. families living far away from relatives, and the need for double-income households.
  • Even if you don’t have kids yet, you can start to build support groups, e.g., veterans, homeschoolers, Bitcoiners, church, etc., early.  If you are not already part of one, then start reaching out to find/build one.
  • Contrasting the experiences of the “worst” and “best” public school districts.
  • Parent-child relations are so, so important.  Gabe and his Dad, Jim, exemplify how homeschooling fosters strong bonds.  And now Gabe is passing this onto his family, with his children.
  • Even when both parents must work to the support the family, that does not mean they don’t have opportunities to bond and teach their children, e.g., Gabe and his daughter doing their own podcast.
  • Reading to your kids when they babies, young kids can really contribute to the parent-child bond.  Make time for reading to and with your kids.
  • Parents are human too.  You make mistakes.  It’s expected and okay.
  • Homeschooling allows older children to teach younger children.  This helps both those who teach, those who are being taught, and the parents all benefit.  Sibling-to-sibling relationships are critical just like parent-child relationships.
  • When kids explain ideas to other kids, the teaching-child learns better.  And they increase their confidence as well.
  • Homeschooling is 100% okay in the US military.  Search on the HSLDA website for information.  Schools on military bases are plagued by the same challenges and issues facing all other public schools.
  • As a kid, Gabe sold donuts door-to-door to pay for books and other materials used in their homeschool curriculum.  This is part of how Jim taught their children about money, through experience.
  • Kids are always watching you.  They learn from what’s caught more than what’s taught.
  • Things are more challenging today for kids to earn money.  You can’t just send them into the street.
  • It never really ends.  Learning for both parents and their kids continues...
07 Dec 2023₿HS012: Teaching The Art of Learning00:52:04

SHOW TOPIC:

Josh Waitzkin brings the proof-of-work when it comes to deep learning and flow.  His techniques about learning to learn can be applied anything.  In this episode, Tali and Scott apply them to homeschooling.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Why “life history” resources, namely biographies and autobiographies, make such great learning tools
  • Josh Waitzkin, the author of “The Art of Learning” describes concepts that can make us as parents better teachers
  • The techniques he describes can be used by anyone, any age
  • Because humans relate to things emotionally, reading a living book is the best to get kids interested
  • Waitzkin strategically thinks about the long term goal (although he does not use the word’s “low time preference”)
  • Waitzkin epitomizes anit-fragile
  • He also goes into great depth about reaching “flow”
  • Immediate feedback is key to flow and key to learning
  • These learning lessons can be applied to anything
  • You can never out success the strength of your character
  • Waitzkin is a master of seeing the world from his opponents’ point of view
  • Constant feedback = adaptive learning
  • Being able to stay in flow when bad things happen is more than understanding your opponents, you really have to understand yourself
  • “Staying soft” emphasizes the importance of finding a state of relaxed concentration, where one can perform at their best in the face of stress
  • “Investing in loss” = seeking out learning from all setbacks and other forms of feedback
  • Teachers, like coaches, need to understand the natural inclinations of their students
  • Balance of encouragement and correction is a fine line to walk
  • Importance of always keeping a beginner’s mind
  • That sense of anti-fragility cannot happen if kids are always winning and not dealing with adversity (back to investment in loss)
  • Visualization is powerful skill to teach kids
  • Another ant-fragile habit to teach kids is to keep a learning journal
  • Don’t trust.  Verify.  Listen to the audible book and pick just one thing that helps you and/or your kids.
  • Effort trumps talent:  Tali challenges the cultural tendency to focus on talent and/or lack of talent, e.g., message to oneself “I’m not good at math”
  • Waitzkin goes deep on everything he does
  • You can use leverage technology to get all types of feedback
  • Train kids to be able to focus in the middle of chaos because conditions are never going to be perfect
  • Face your losses.  Don’t shy away from them.
  • To succeed fast, fail faster
  • Use living books.  Have discussions about them with your kids.

18 May 2024₿HS025: Protecting Parent-Child Relationships with Seb Bunney01:09:04

SHOW TOPICS:

We can’t control lobbying or money printing but we can control what we do at home.  Foster your parent-child bonds.  Protect them from the hidden costs of money on the family.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Our monetary environment plays a role in our parents’ ability to show up authentically.
  • For example, when parents have to work their ass off to try to support the family’s financial needs, it can lead to kids not getting their emotional needs met.
  • The latter leads to yet other secondary, tertiary issues.
  • Seb’s book “Hidden Cost of Money” has entire chapter on the family unit.
  • Seb describes how money is like language, it communicates information.  It’s a “medium of expression,” not just a medium of exchange.
  • Like language, money can also be censored.
  • An example is capital controls in China.  A father who cannot store his capital for his family, cannot express his support for his family.
  • The ability to express ourselves is vital for kids, for parents.
  • Everyone’s time preference is impacted by money, and not for the better.  The loss of purchasing power through inflation is decreasing the focus on building long term security for one’s family and increasing the focus on impulsive, consumer-based decisions.
  • Meaninglessness sets in as the rising cost of living makes it more and more challenging to plan.  In psychological terms, the locus of control is shifting from internal to external.  This leads to poor health outcomes.
  • People get stuck at the bottom layer of the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs because money is broken and their purchasing power melts.  They therefore have harder and harder time moving up to self-actualization.  This reduces altruism and compassion to give back.
  • Tali challenges if there isn’t a silver lining in how bad our money is broken.  For example, one of America’s greatest strengths, a strive for individualism, is also our great weakness, e.g., spiritual wealth.  Perhaps this will bring extended families back together.
  • There are compounding negative impacts for kids: stress of the mother during pregnancy, poor diet, less time with parents.
  • The world is not black and white.  Other factors are the medical system, social media, and lobbying, e.,g. big pharm.  Their incentives are not aligned with a low time preference strategy on health where we would address chronic illnesses decades before they become urgent.
  • Comparing and contrasting the western and eastern views of life, health and death.
  • Tali brings it back to the family level.  We can’t control lobbying.  We can’t control money printing.  But we can control what we do at home, i.e., keeping a positive mental attitude and sharing positive energy.
  • Before a child is even born, it is impacted by the mother’s stress, e.g., stress hormones.  And money is one the largest sources of stress.
  • When kids are motivated and passionate about something, their capacity to learn is exponentially greater.  Therefore, if a child shows an interest in something, allow and encourage them to pursue it.
  • Kids needs to have some outlet in the physical or sport realm.
  • What do you value?   Comparing and contrasting the 3 P’s (power, prestige, possession) versus the 3 C’s (contributions, challenges, connections).
  • There are decisions you can make that you a better parent.  Teaching critical thinking is one of those.
  • There is a spectrum of protecting kids.  On one side is “share everything”.  On the other is extreme nurturing.  Understanding this framework helps think through what and

01 Feb 2024₿HS019: Deanna and Joel Are Building an Alternative to State Indoctrination01:04:25

SHOW TOPIC:  Independent thinking, teacher incentives, and AI's place in a homeschool curriculum

Deanna and Joel are building the future they want to see.  The decline in our education system has compounded year after year for over a century.  It is too corrupt to fix from the inside.  This inspired them to start their own teaching business.

With technology as a deflationary force, the cost of education should be decreasing and the quality should be increasing.  The opposite is happening.  Independent thought and critical thinking are sacrificed for the sake of conforming to approved narratives.  Listen to how this couple is fighting back by leaving the system and creating teaching content for Bitcoin homeschoolers.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

·      Deanna and Joel share a passion for education and started a homeschool curriculum company.  They only work with Bitcoin families.

·      Lyceum Tutoring has on-demand courses for history, humanities, economics, literature and art history.

·      The negative trends in education including at the college level have been going on for many years

·      Improving writing skills helps students think better

·      IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) is program Tali used to help teach her kids.  It was the exact opposite of the way Tali had been taught in college (which was to dumb down everything).

·      Joel and Deanna are horrified (but not surprised) hearing about how Scott and Tali’s daughter was directed to write an opinion paper as a college freshman.

·      Before you spend money on your kid’s college, ask what they really need for their chosen career field

·      The trades have many training programs

·      Most things CAN be learned by ANYONE.  Avoid the false narrative that “I’m just not good in math” etc.

·      Charlotte Mason method is a popular homeschool philosophy.  Using “living books” is an example of this method.

·      Use original, unabridged works as much as possible

·      Little to zero benefit of labelling reading abilities by grade

·      Debating incentives versus laziness of public-school teachers and college professors

·      Losing meritocracy … The trend with college students being graded by their fellow college students

·      With technology as a deflationary force, the cost of education should be decreasing and the quality should be increasing.  The opposite is happening.

·      AI is just a tool.  It can be used for good, e.g., as a brain-storming partner when writing a book.

·      Don’t be afraid of AI.  In fact, embrace it.  It’s best to incorporate it into homeschool curriculum.

·      Project Gutenberg is great resource for homeschoolers.  It is a library of over 70,000 free e-books.

·      Deanna is working on her new book, “Shells to Satoshi, the Story of Money”.  Joel is working a romance novel set in El Salvador amongst Bitcoin expats.

20 Feb 2024₿HS021: The Wild Life of Unschooling00:58:49

SHOW TOPICS:  life-long parent-child bonds, unschooling FUD, filling your own emotional cup

Unschooling can build incredible, life-long parent-child bonds.  You trust them.  They trust you.  Give your kids a loving, respectful and happy home.

Parents may have to de-school themselves.  There is a lot of FUD about unschooling.  Unschooling is the opposite of being lazy and locking kids up.  It’s about getting active and having a network, a caring community.  There’s a balance.  Kids are free to explore and choose their own path, but parents are there to guide.  It’s not a completely hands-off experience.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Alex’s background and inspiration for taking self-custody of her son’s education
  • She left Germany as a single Mom and without a specific plan other than she knew they had to leave
  • Alex’s ideas of what people who can’t homeschool, e.g., in Germany
  • There are certain countries around Germany that way more relaxed when it comes to homeschool so if you’re living on the border you can send them there instead.
  • West River Academy was another option Alex found to be very helpful for unschooling families
  • Clarifying the FUD … “Unschooling” means kids have a choice, including going to school.  Also, parents do set boundaries.
  • Kids learn because they need something in life, e.g., basic math skills.
  • Kids learn how to learn.  Then they can apply this skill to other areas and other problems.
  • Alex’s son has a variety of coaches, e.g.,  at his boxing / MMA club.
  • Unschooling is the opposite of being lazy and locking kids up.  It’s about getting active and having a network, a caring community.
  • Tali discusses a letter she wrote to herself when her first-born was an infant.
  • Contrast between Alex’s German background and Tali’s Chinese background leads to some fun back-and-forth.
  • There’s a balance in un-schooling.  Kids are free to explore and choose their own path, but parents are there to guide.  It’s not a completely hands-off experience.
  • Not everyone you know, friends or family, will understand what you’re doing.  The most important thing is that the kids feel loved.
  • For Alex, the most important thing was letting go of her fear and programming … to de-school herself.
  • She recommends self-discovery activities and habits.  The more you love yourself, the more you trust yourself, the better it is for your kids.  Fill your own cup.

05 Jan 2024₿HS016: Odell Opens the Door for Bitcoin Homeschoolers01:45:42

SHOW TOPIC:

Today, with Matt Odell’s permission, we’re re-publishing Citadel Dispatch 84.  Matt gave us the opportunity to join him on his podcast exactly one year ago.  That really opened up our minds to what was possible and, consequently, we did more than we ever thought was possible.  Now we’re more inspired than ever to give back to others, e.g., more podcasts with “Bitcoin Homeschoolers” and “Orange Hatter”; more bitcoin games, more in-person events, etc.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Breaking one’s podcast virginity
  • Why should we care about homeschooling?  Why is it important?
  • Let the child lead.  Don’t hold their education back.
  • Let kids move around when they study.
  • Using grades can make kids feel labelled.
  • Let children have freedom to make mistakes and learn.  School systems teach kids to be afraid of making mistakes instead of embracing them.
  • Almost all of our pain points in society go back to education.
  • Instead of getting kids to an average level in every subject, let them pick an area to go deep with and excel in.
  • You do not need a teaching degree to homeschool.
  • Homeschooled kids are more comfortable with social interactions, not less.
  • Teaching self-discipline is a critical life skill.
  • Taking responsibility, how to handle difficult times, and other frameworks are things you, as a parent, choose to teach.
  • Biggest hurdles for young parents that want to homeschool
  • You can outsource teaching almost any subject
  • Homeschooling is 365.  Take care of yourself first.
  • You don’t have to be perfect.
  • Homeschooling is taking self-custody of your (kids’) education.
  • Spending time with your kids shows them they matter to you.
  • Separation of government and education
  • Parents have the strongest incentive alignment possible with their children
  • Homeschooling kids are taught to think for yourself versus the conformity-driven woke agendas in state schools
  • Kids pick up things that not formally taught to them
  • At some point you have to trust your kids to make decisions on their own when you’re not there.  You have to let go.
  • Don’t be afraid.  There are so many resources.

01 Mar 2024₿HS022: Youth Financial Empowerment00:37:35

SHOW TOPICS:  money-literacy for teens, helping homeschoolers become bitcoiners

Tali and Scott finally talk about a project that’s been a year in the making.  They explain details about their new online course to help homeschooling parents and their teens take their first steps towards Bitcoin.  “Youth Financial Empowerment” is about how money works.  It’s 20+ years of homeschooling plus Bitcoin in a condensed format busy parents can use to help their teens – without having to spend hundreds or thousands of hours researching.

The founding classes offered this summer are $200 off.  It’s not just for homeschooling families, it’s for all families.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Inspiration driving Tali and Scott to help homeschoolers move towards Bitcoin
  • They want to help find the signal amongst so much noise about what money is and why it’s broken
  • Common feeling parents have is nervousness about what the broken fiat money system means for their children’s future
  • For the first time in generations, majority of parents do not expect their children’s future to be brighter than their own
  • Bitcoiners connect with the ideas of self-custody education and separation of church and state quickly.
  • But going the other direction is more challenging, hence the expression “homeschoolers are bitcoiners who don’t know it yet”
  • The Free Market Kids course “Youth Financial Empowerment” addresses the latter challenge.
  • But the course is valuable, regardless whether you homeschool or not, regardless whether you’re Bitcoiners or not
  • You can’t budget your way to prosperity.  Wages do not keep up with real inflation.
  • The course offers value because it takes from Scott and Tali’s 20+ years of homeschooling plus what they’ve learned studying Bitcoin, and condenses the material into a format busy parents can use to help their teens – without having to spend hundreds or thousands of hours researching.
  • Scott and Tali and exhibiting in person at a homeschooling conference in just over a month from the time of recording
  • The structure is a 5-day bootcamp consisting of 10 modules.  It’s Austrian economics centric.
  • The course design will go through an iterative process similar to when play testing and designing games
  • The intent is for teens to walk away with tools, e.g., frameworks, and knowledge that will help them understand the world around them better, and to help them make better decisions.
  • “Don’t trust. Verify” is another example of useful frameworks that will help teens, e.g., misleading election year propaganda.
  • Game elements will be part of how to make the course more interesting and effective, e.g., the negation, pricing-mechanism game “Is That The Best You Can Do?”
  • The first three live sessions offered in June are the “founding classes” and are $200 off
  • Lesson learned from homeschooling: sometimes the message needs to come from someone other than you, the parent.
  • Lesson learned from homeschooling: it is valuable for you, as the parent, to find a resource where someone else has gone through all the messy noise, done the hundreds of hours of research, found the signal, and packed it up concisely to teach your kids.

30 Nov 2023₿HS011: Kalani and Tyler Address a Gap for Homeschoolers with Haskel Academy00:52:56

SHOW TOPIC:

Finding local resources to supplement a homeschooling curriculum is a continuous challenge.  Haskel Academy creates a marketplace to close that gap and link parents with service providers of all types.  Kalani and Tyler describe their background and motivation to found this non-profit organization.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Tyler was homeschooled for the entire K-12
  • Kalani was public-schooled but had parents who naturally supplemented her education
  • Two of her sisters because elementary teachers but decided to stay home to educate their own children
  • Part of their inspiration came from their background and thinking about their own son’s education
  • Kalani and Tyler questioned why there wasn’t a centralized hub to locate quality teachers
  • COVID brought a lot of things going on (and not going on) in public schools to light
  • Comparing co-op type of experiences to crowd-sourcing or a la carte education
  • It’s a two-fold mission.  It’s mutually beneficial for the families and the educators.
  • They have virtual profiles on Haskel Academy but their main focus is on in-person interactions
  • Many co-ops are religiously-oriented which can make the challenge of finding teachers more challenging for people of different faiths
  • Challenge for everyone, if you have something you’re passionate about to teach others
  • “Edupreneur” …  someone who creates a business or organization that helps educate
  • Easy to say but hard to do … It takes passion to put in the work to start up a new organization or movement
  • The concept of Haskell Academy is it's a place where teachers, co ops, micro schools, clubs, sports teams, anyone serving those out of the traditional school system market. can go online and create a free profile
  • A grant from Vela Ed helped them upgrade their website
  • Haskel Academy is free and educators have control over their own profiles
  • Hopeful to become especially helpful for families with kids with special needs
  • Homeschooling is also about giving.  Kalani has a full time job but teaches Spanish, her passion, on the side through her profile on their website
  • If you’re a Bitcoin homeschooler, you already have knowledge that you too can share
  • One of the benefits of Haskel Academy is that it skips the gatekeepers, e.g., at co-ops, who may block teaching sound money or Bitcoin

10 Mar 2024₿HS023: Overlooked Aspects of Compounding, Experiential Learning with Brooke Williams01:06:24

SHOW TOPICS:  experiential real-world learning, compounding benefits of year-round schooling, treating kids like adults

Brooke Williams is a homeschool dad who shared the teaching responsibilities equally with his wife.  He’s also a passionate Bitcoiner.  In today’s episode Tali and Scott dig into his lessons learned about the often-overlooked compounding benefits of year-round learning, experiential learning, treating kids like adults, the homeschooling mental game, and the incredible resilience of kids.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Brooke’s background including how growing up traveling around the world impacted how they raised their kids
  • His family’s journey into homeschooling
  • In public schools, a large portion of the beginning of each new school year is spent re-learning what was forgotten since the prior year.
  • Homeschooling can and often goes year round.  This is huge benefit of homeschooling.  The compounding effects mean kids get much further ahead, much faster.
  • Kids are going to learn what they are interested in
  • They went to a home-based partnership in California
  • The teaching was done by both him and his wife
  • Treat your kids like adults.  Don’t treat them like their helpless.
  • Experiential learning is part of everyday life, e.g., giving kids jobs to do when grocery shopping.
  • There is learning in everything you do:  chores, choosing what to cook, making a grocery list, budgeting, etc.
  • Pets teach so much not just kids, but adults as well.  When life happens, parents are there to coach their kids how to deal with difficult circumstances including everything from nurturing and caring to life and death.
  • Many of America’s early leaders were homeschooled, e.g., Lincoln.  The idea that you need someone else like the state or some other central authority to tell you what is best for your kids is garbage.
  • There is a lot of FUD and perceived risk about homeschooling.
  • Brooke and his wife found their source of strength in a local homeschooling partnership.  Local connections are instrumental in terms of support.
  • These groups are in every community.  You just have to seek them out.
  • The mental game for those undecided:  you can do this.  You already have what you need to homeschool and there are so many support resources available.
  • Kids are incredibly resilient.  Don’t overthink about what it takes to homeschool.  No one is perfect.  Own your mistakes and know that your kids are going to be fine.
  • The incredible value of parent-children bonds
  • Beware of the fallacy of teaching kids independence by leaving them alone, e.g., when they cry
  • Brooke created his own financial boot camp for kids.

09 Feb 2024₿HS020: Overcoming Legal and Fiat Challenges to Homeschooling00:45:23

SHOW TOPICS:  criminalized homeschooling, “homeschooling” public-school students, screen-time and other challenges

Parents are ultimately responsible for their kids’ education.   Some families live in places where homeschooling is criminalized, e.g., Germany.  Some families can’t afford to formally homeschool, e.g., because both parents must work.  Nonetheless, there are actions parents can take.  Tali and Scott go deep on this challenging situation.  One key takeaway is focusing on relationships because, if your relationships are open, you've got a chance to reach the kids.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Not everyone who wants to homeschool can.  Some families live in places where homeschooling is criminalized, e.g., Germany.  Some families can’t afford to homeschool, e.g., because both parents must work.
  • Nonetheless, there are actions you can take if you are in this circumstance.
  • Intentional courage: You are responsible for your kids’ education, not the state.
  • Kids are always watching and learning from what we do, not just what we say.
  • We as parents are not helpless.  We can take action.
  • The nuance between “learning” and “drawing conclusions”
  • Parents can start by clarifying for themselves what they want their kids to learn.
  • Apply the “Don’t trust. Verify.” ethos of Bitcoin.  Don’t hope that public school teachers or administrators will teach things your kids should know.  Parents must ask questions.  Be very deliberate in poking into your kids’ business.  Don’t expect it to be easy.
  • Approaches vary based on age-range.  The younger, the easier.
  • Asking kids about school is not for the purpose of judging them, or their performance, e.g., on a test.  It’s about what they are actually learning.
  • Proof of love.  Despite eye rolls, they do appreciate that you care.  You are vested in their future.
  • Teenage years do NOT have to be antagonistic or confrontational all the time as is often portrayed in movies and shows.
  • You as a parent have to be continuously learning yourself.
  • Teaching kids the importance of having courage is valuable.  There’s also a caution: we as parents must remain sensitive to the intense pressures kids will face, not just from other kids but from adults in positions of authority.
  • If the family is strong, if the relationships are really strong, it's easier for the child to be courageous.
  • Choosing your battles and remaining flexible
  • Principle of choosing the harder right over the easier wrong
  • Example subjects to boost public-school kids’ knowledge:  history, economics, social studies, current events.
  • Parents and kids are busy.  Attention time is scarce.  Lectures are not effective for heavy subjects.  Be aware of creating unintentional resistance.
  • One of the things that works against us as parents trying to build relationships with kids today is screen time.
  • Options and methods:

o   Game nights

o   Family dinners

o   Special projects

o   Movie nights (selective movies)

o   Captured audience, e.g., driving time

o   Assigned readings, videos (e.g., documentaries) (“home” homework vs. “school” homework)

  • A key takeaway is to focus on the relationship because, because if your relationship is open, you've got a chance to communicate.  Focus on that and the other things will fall into place.
  • Do you know someone who is doing these things?  Tali and...
17 Dec 2023₿HS013: AI and Homeschooling00:51:40

SHOW TOPIC:

It’s mission critical for Bitcoin homeschoolers to overcome the fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) about artificial intelligence (AI).  Tali and Scott kick off this series with the “why” about this powerful type of tool.  The decision parents must make is whether to learn about AI and be the master of the new technology or be the victim who fears it.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Many examples of AI FUD.
  • AI needs to be part of your homeschooling curriculum.
  • Parents need to understand what AI is and help their kids with a framework for it.
  • It is a tool.  Like all tools, it can be used for good for evil.
  • It is normal for people to fear new technologies, e.g., electricity or cars.
  • Not using AI does not protect you from it.
  • The decision parents have to make is whether to learn about AI and be the master of the new technology or be the victim who fears it.
  • AI is not actually intelligent.
  • The phrase “artificial intelligence” was first coined in the 1950’s.
  • The potential of AI as a tool to enhance learning is mind-blowing, e.g., learning how to play chess now versus 30 years ago.
  • With the acceleration of technology, there’s actually a decentralization impact on AI.
  • This is a call to action to homeschooling parents to go deeper, to figure out how to incorporate AI into your curriculum.
  • Just pick one area, one AI tool and go try it out
  • Narrow AI versus general AI
  • Yes, AI can lead to loss of jobs.  However, it also leads to new jobs.  Those who learn AI tools will remain in high demand by companies.
  • Controlling societies like China can use AI in scary totalitarian ways.  This is reinforces why we need to understand and teach how AI really works and remain vigilant in protecting our freedoms.
  • Spirit of Satoshi is based on libertarian ideas, Austrian economics and Bitcoin resources.

11 Jan 2024₿HS017: AI for Homeschoolers Part 2 – Free Speech00:43:54

SHOW TOPIC:

There’s more to understanding AI than its technical applications.  Tali and Scott continue their AI for Homeschoolers series exploring the connection between AI and free speech.  They balance the Bitcoin Moms' point of view with the Bitcoin Dads' point of view.  AI is just a tool, although a very powerful one.  Our free speech rights are under attack from government censorship, e.g., biden’s recent executive order.  Free speech is not contingent upon being “correct” because at the heart of the matter is the question of who gets to decide what is correct.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Tali and Scott take a moment to rif on how to make this podcast the most valuable for others.
  • Homeschooling is not limited to those who take 100% control of their kids education.  Nights and weekends provide learning opportunities for dual-income families and public-schooled families as well.
  • While anyone at any stage can benefit from discussions like today’s topic on AI, the discussion focuses on families with middle-school-aged children and older.
  • You as a parent can prepare yourself well before your kids are ready for the material
  • Consider yourself part of the home education process … you learn too
  • Many subjects studied in public school curriculum do not help kids prepare for post-graduation life.
  • Conversely, many useful subject, e.g., AI, are not included but would be very valuable in preparing students for post-graduation life.
  • If you are not taking advantage of AI in your work you are falling behind.  So, don’t hold kids back from this tool called AI.
  • Bitcoin Moms’ points of view
  • Bitcoin Dads’ points of view
  • If you have the skills to use this tool, AI, then you are incredibly valuable to any organization.
  • “Biden’s AI Bill of Rights May Just Be Another Censorship Plan” written by Jeremy Powell is available on Mises.org
  • Disinformation about disinformation … 1984’ “Ministry of Truth”
  • Free speech is not contingent upon being “correct” because at the heart of the matter is the question of who gets to decide what is correct.
  • The government continues to play Big Brother and deciding what citizens can or cannot be exposed to, what they can think and cannot think.  If you disagree, they shut you down.
  • Stay positive.  Be careful to guard your emotions.  It’s hard to keep positive when there are so many negative things in the news like biden’s executive order.
  • AI is bringing great benefits, to include new types of jobs.  Focus on those good things.
  • Kids could be turned off if we communicate in a harsh way, even if our passion is coming from a place of love.
  • Social media street smarts.  We are all susceptible to being manipulated by AI, .e.g., by social media, chat bots, etc.
  • Those creatives who are embracing AI and how to use it are advancing their skills and thriving.

31 Dec 2023₿HS015: From Fear to Confidence – Lessons from 202300:34:12

SHOW TOPIC:

It’s been one year since Tali and Scott formally finished homeschooling their kids and left the corporate world.  They focus on giving back to homeschoolers, women Bitcoiners, and veterans. Tali and Scott use the week between Christmas and New Years to reflect on the prior year and goals for 2024.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Tali’s surprise note to herself
  • Last December is when everything really started with this journey.  They finished formal homeschooling and a corporate at the same time.
  • Until visiting Bitcoin Park, they had felt like they were on an island in terms of meeting and talking with Bitcoiners.
  • That is where they first played Hodl Up with Bitcoiners and not just their family and friends.
  • One aspect that changed is going from the stepping-off moment when they committed and today, when they have more confidence.
  • It’s one thing to understand what Jeff Booth has articulated about not working in the system you’re fighting.  It’s another to apply that understanding and take action.  It can be a scary prospect.
  • The game Hodl Up helped open opportunities to meet people but Tali and Scott learned throughout the year that this is actually part of something that was much bigger than themselves.
  • It is so important to get out and meet people in person.
  • If you have something to give, then give back.  For Tali and Scott, this is with homeschoolers, women Bitcoiners and veterans.
  • Hodl Up has proven to be an effective bridge builder with pre-coiners.
  • The whole journey of 2023 stemmed from an understanding that Tali and Scott are trying to bring awareness of Bitcoin to new people.
  • We need to put ourselves in the shoes of others to understand how they perceive the world in order to reach them with messages about Bitcoin, sound money, etc.
  • People won’t pivot until they personally have a need or they personally  see the impacts of the fiat system.
  • Tali started OrangeHatter podcast because she saw a gap where women were not necessarily being spoken to in a feminine way.
  • Create touch points.  Meet people where they are.
  • With purpose comes fulfillment.  Working on something bigger than themselves has made the past year so rewarding for Tali and Scott.
  • For Bitcoin adoption to continue, we have to reach women and specifically moms.
  • Brainstorming ways to connect in 2024

18 Aug 2024₿HS029: This Is Not a School00:57:10

SHOW TOPICS:

Dads and soon-to-be-Dads, are you trying to convince your wife to homeschool?   Our guest today, John, shares his story of how he and his wife worked this discussion.  Now, 19 years of homeschooling later, they share their lessons learned and suggestions for others in their book, “This Is Not A School.”  Take self-custody of your parenting.  In the long term, the low time preference view, it’s worth it.  The way we help other parents is by sharing.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

·      John’s book is “This Is Not A School: A nineteen year family education journal”

·      Their reasons for homeschooling were not religious

·      He was inspired by his mother who emphasized how important it is to take full responsibility for the education of your children

·      Get the food right is one of the cornerstones of homeschooling

·      Limit the bad influences, e.g., what kids may be exposed to in public schools

·      John had to convince his wife to homeschool

·      You don’t need to have a lot of money to homeschool

·      They emphasized to their children that they were responsible for their own education

·      Teaching kids how to think for themselves is so important, e.g., critical thinking, mental frameworks

·      Self-custody parenting … Take control of what your kids are going to eat, going to experience, going to be exposed to

·      Parents are the ones who have the greatest incentive to take care of kids

·      When your kids fall down, don’t baby them.  Tell them to get up.

·      In many schools, administrators pummel kids with questions that really are suggestions, e.g., do you feel suicidal, do you feel like the opposite sex

·      They based their homeschooling on real world projects and situations, e.g., forming a PAC with their children called “Cannabis Consumers for Liberty”

·      Their family came under additional scrutiny and potential monitoring … John says that those who homeschool should be prepared for similar treatment

·      In the long term, the low time preference view, it’s worth it.  The way we help other parents is by sharing.

·      Talk to kids like adults about all subjects, especially money

·      They are working with Adam Curry to set up a Lightning node to process microtransactions for their audio book

·      The kids were with them when they set up their bitcoin wallet

·      Do what you need to do to be present with your family

·      If you’re feeling discouraged because it feels challenging to homeschool, don’t give up.

·      John explains the history of National Computer Systems (NCS) and its influence over the US educational system and standards.  They were purchased by Pearson, a publishing company in London.

·      Go to the original, printed sources whenever possible … Build a book library of unabridged classics

SHOW TOPICS:

In today’s episode we explore the convergence of technology, education and health.  It is alarming how distractions like phone notifications, blue light and social media algorithms just wreak havoc with our circadian rhythms and other aspects of our health.  This dysfunctional relationship with technology is what motivated Anjan to development the DaylightComputer, a true low-time-preference technology.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Anjan’s background and love for technology
  • Tug of war for kids … benefits of technology versus the downsides, e.g., distractions, addiction, blue light, etc.
  • “Respect for that which is Lindy”
  • Technology is mis-matched to how humans naturally evolved, e.g., constant notifications, blue light at night, et al
  • The Daylight Computer is like the Marauder’s Map in Harry Potter in that it looks like ink appearing/disappearing and requires light shined on it to see
  • Sovereignty applied to every layer: physical health sovereignty, cognitive sovereignty, nervous system sovereignty, monetary and digital sovereignty
  • Dopamine system encourages people to enjoy learning but computers were designed to take advantage of this same system to make screen time more addicting
  • The goal of Daylight Computer is to give some option but not to go cold turkey on existing devices
  • The product is just as impactful for adults as kids, especially for reading and writing, and it’s healthy
  • It is low-time-preference technology
  • Different parenting approaches to digital devices

12 Oct 2023₿HS004: Overcoming the Fear of Overwhelm00:31:41

SHOW TOPIC:

Homeschooling is a commitment.  You are investing your precious time and attention for the long-term success and happiness of your children.  In this conversation, Tali and Scott deep dive the common fear of being overwhelmed.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • A common question from those considering homeschooling is how to not lose yourself
  • Homeschooling is not as hard as you might think
  • It’s okay if spouses don’t agree on all aspects (feature not a bug)
  • You have a lot of options, each with varying impacts on time for yourself
  • Just start … then adjust.  It’s a process you continually tweak.
  • You don’t need to have plan for entire K-12 experience.  Planning out a month or two in advance is fine.
  • Part-time private schools are one option
  • Co-ops offer additional benefit, the opportunity to share your passions
  • Extended family plans
  • Homeschooling play groups and field trips
  • Every homeschooling mom, no matter how devoted needs time to herself to recoup and regenerate
  • There are so many resources:  Mom’s groups, churches, online curriculum, etc.
  • Finding homeschooling groups and play groups in your area
  • Always do a tour before committing to a program
  • Consider attending homeschooling conventions
  • Homeschoolers are very much like Bitcoiners.  They're very, very friendly, open, and more than happy to share experience.
  • Stay flexible and know that it's going to be okay. Take one step at a time.

27 Apr 2024₿HS024: The Value of Homeschool Conventions00:47:24

SHOW TOPICS:

Yes, homeschooling conventions really exist.  They are valuable for parents whether you homeschool or not, whether you can attend in person or not.  In this episode, Tali and Scott share their experience as vendors and speakers at the 2024 GHC Cincinnati event.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • There are multiple brands of homeschooling conventions.  The one Tali and Scott attended was Great Homeschooling Conventions, GHC.
  • One non-obvious benefit of homeschooling conventions is the morale boost it gives for parents: attending workshops, getting pumped up, getting fresh information, being reminded of basic principles.
  • Featured speakers are brought in to speak.  There are also workshops facilitated by exhibitors.
  • Conventions bring together homeschoolers and hundreds of vendors who cover a widely diverse set of products and services.
  • Most attendees purchase curriculum for the following school year.
  • Tali’s new vendor list: Flitetest; Wonder Year (book); Poptential; Teach Me Health and Homeopathy; Soda Farm; Science Ninjas; Push and Grow
  • Scott’s new vendor list: Beyond Personal Finance; Life Momentum with Anna B; Trinity College of Louisville
  • Hands-on projects can be combined with formal classes.  Projects also help get dads or other family members get involved, and give moms a break.
  • Homeschoolers, like Bitcoiners, are open to alternative, i.e., non-fiat, diets, natural non-processed foods, homesteading, etc.
  • There is still a long road ahead to open homeschoolers up to how money works and Bitcoin.
  • Attendance this year was down, most likely due to the poor economic conditions.

27 Jan 2024₿HS018: The Mental Game - Guarding Your Mind & Thoughts00:39:14

SHOW TOPIC:  Mental training, preparing for adversity, and avoiding fiat-mindset slippage

This episode covers how kids need to learn to deal with disappointment and adversity.  If you are homeschooling, it’s an easy trap to fall into to try to control everything.  Be intentional.  Mental training, e.g., mental resilience and anti-fragility, is an important topic often absent from standard curriculum.  Parents should be aware their beliefs from the fiat world are at risk of sipping into and being carried over to the Bitcoin world.  Pay attention to the paradigm you are passing to your kids.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Viktor Frankl’s “Man's Search for Meaning” describes, first hand, how and why some people give up while others are able to persevere through extreme adversity.
  • His story exemplifies why it is important to guard your mental state.
  • What inspired Tali in the Robert Kiyosaki’s interview
  • Kiyosaki described “internal economy” versus “external economy”
  • The rich are playing a different game.  They are playing by a different set of rules.
  • The moment you accept money, you accept being an employee.
  • What you truly believe is what is communicated to your kids
  • Clarifying the distinction between an entrepreneur mindset and a value-for-value (V4V) kids allowance
  • Parents should be aware their beliefs from the fiat world are at risk of sipping into / being carried over to the Bitcoin world
  • Kids need to learn how to deal with disappointment.  If you are homeschooling, it’s an easy trap to fall into to try to control everything.
  • There are alternatives to sports to give kids an opportunity to be exposed to adversity.
  • Intentionality …
  • Face your fear … example Rejection Proof
  • Mental training, e.g., mental resilience and anti-fragility, is an important topic often absent from standard curriculum.
  • Scott’s Ayn Rand “Virtue of Selfishness” tangent
  • We should be confident in our pursuits but not expect transition will be smooth.  We’re going to have obstacles in life.  You have to have the mental resilience to ride the ups and downs.

21 Dec 2023₿HS014: Clair and Daniel Prince Share World-Schooling-Bitcoiner Lessons01:09:44

SHOW TOPIC:

Clair and Daniel Prince bring the proof-of-work.  Homeschooling while you’re traveling the world takes commitment and courage.  In this episode they share their perspectives on un-programming ourselves as parents, teaching values to children, the importance of critical thinking skills, regulatory creep in Europe, and developing deep and bonding relationships with your family.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Clair and Daniel started their journey on world schooling in 2014.
  • Originally reason had nothing to do with education.  It started because they wanted to exit the corporate rat race.
  • Self-directed education includes world schooling, unschooling, homeschooling, self-led learning.
  • Benefits have included spending time with their children, seeing how they learn differently from one another, and so much more.
  • When Daniel first left his fiat job, he and Clair had to work out the balance.  They had different methods of discipline, different approaches to teaching, different expectations of learning, different levels of patience, etc.
  • It’s important to understand you have to do a lot of de-schooling and un-programming of your own.
  • Socialization fears with alternative education are not just wrong.  The reality is homeschooled kids are demonstrably better interacting with people of all ages, including adults.
  • Transition time between activities and events is critical
  • You can learn skills later in life, but you can’t go back and create time with your kids.  You’re building lifelong relationships.
  • One of the biggest rewards is teaching your kids to think critically
  • How to have conversations with older children about the decision to go to university or not
  • The word “drop out” is a psy op
  • Western European countries are making it harder for parents to homeschool since covid
  • World schooling is still a cheaper way to live than staying in one place
  • Clair and Daniel are still judged today on their original decision to world school versus looking at the results, e.g., being bilingual
  • World schooling takes work, but it’s worth it

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Absorbing material from different viewpoints and different people repeatedly assists with learning
  • “10X Is Easier Than 2X” is useful for Bitcoin homeschoolers despite the fact it wasn’t written intentionally for either audience
  • Rich Dad Poor Dad is a good example of why teaching kids mental frameworks matters
  • Contrasting abundance versus scarcity mindsets
  • The “pie fallacy” of scarcity in the fiat world
  • Truly free markets increase abundance, the pie get bigger
  • Abundance mindset leads to happiness
  • Talk to your kids about “the four freedoms”: time, money, relationships, and purpose
  • Free up your kids to let them identify and develop their unique abilities
  • Fiat scarcity mindset creates incentives for people to go to college, to pursue types of careers based on how much they pay instead of what their unique abilities are
  • You can start is by teaching the kids that there's an alternative to the fiat education and it fits perfectly with Bitcoin
  • Technology and global competition mean it’s no longer good enough to just be good enough
  • “Gap versus gain” framework is a powerful tool for everyone, not just kids
  • Check out the video (links below) including a clip of Hayek in 1984 talking about a sly roundabout way to take money out of the hand of the government
  • Useful and practical tool related to low time preference is Sullivan’s “focus-buffer-rejuvenate” framework
  • Rest days are critical.  Tali shares personal lessons learned.
  • Teaching your kids how to view time has a huge impact on their future success and happiness
  • The super high time preference of our society is even reflected in how people drive

19 Dec 2024₿HS033: Sovereign Education in Alaska01:19:41

SHOW TOPICS:

To have sovereign money, we must have sovereign education.  In today’s episode, we explore sovereign education in Alaska with bitcoin homeschoolers, Wade and Tami.  They are breaking the misconception you can’t homeschool if both parents work.  They have also taken the initiative to organize the 2025 Bitcoin Alaska conference.  So much proof of work!  Check out their story.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Homebridge is one of three options for parents in Juneau, Alaska
  • During the pandemic, Wade and Tami witnessed how poorly the school system was being run
  • A second factor that led to homeschooling was a first-hand experience from political agendas being pushed in public schools
  • Start homeschooling with kids as young as possible
  • Wad and Tami do not let their younger children have unsupervised access to digital devices
  • Psychosis is being actively allowed and taught in public schools
  • An elementary school had a “coming out transgender” party for an eight year old without the knowledge of the kids’ parents
  • Their kids are more diverse in terms of being able to socialize with other ages than their public school counterparts
  • Every state is different and the Alaska constitution mandates a robust public school system
  • Homebridge was established during COVID
  • It includes a physical location staffed by a teacher
  • Kids in the program have access to the public school library, sports and classes
  • Parents also get payments to be used on other activities, e.g., karate, ceramics, swimming, online classes, photography,
  • Offering topics outside of what public schools offer is a huge upside to homeschooling
  • Opened the door for dual-income families to still homeschool
  • Geographic arbitrage is how Wade described the ability to move to other states … in the long term, parents can vote with their feet
  • Their kids have been exposed to Bitcoin and even ask to get chore money in bitcoin instead of fiat
  • Society (thanks to fiat indoctrination) drastically underestimates when kids can learn new material
  • Wade is a Mi Primer Bitcoin light node and teaches their diploma at their local Juneau meetup
  • Alaskan natives are very proud of being sovereign people
  • What “sovereign education” really means
  • One of the hardest things that challenged Wade and Tami was the stigma of what “homeschooling” means, especially when both parents work
  • There’s a huge lobby from the education union to push kids back into school because they’re losing funds
  • The swamp to include the government, NGO’s, unions, other special interests are going to fight harder than ever to protect their gravy train.  Parents must stand up for their rights.  The statists do not care about what is best for the child, nor what is the most effective and efficient method of education.  They care only about keeping power and control.
  • To win the big battle we must remove the money.  That’s the only way long term to win.  The education infinite game.
  • We all have different roles to play in the short and long term games.
