08 Jan 2024 | Guest: Shelley Herman, Author & Former NBC Page | 00:43:50
There are some of our episodes where the recordings just fly by! And this was one of them.On this edition of Big Conversations, Little Bar, Patrick Evans and Randy Florence welcome former NBC Page and Emmy-nominated writer, Shelley Herman. Back in the golden days at NBC when Johnny Carson ruled the network, Shelley was an NBC Page which landed her in the Tonight Show studio listening to entertainment history. We say “listening” because she spent the majority of her time with her back to the stage. The NBC Page program (think Kenneth on 30 Rock) was basically a management training program at the network. Eventually, Shelley was writing successfully for the peacock. There’s some great stories about her time with Peter Marshall and the Hollywood Squares. And you can hear Randy's mind get blown as Shelly shares the secret about the frozen turkeys in the game show Supermarket Sweep. (spoiler alert….they weren’t real). There’s also some stories about some of less “savory” characters Shelly and other Pages had to deal with. Bill Cosby was an issue already being addressed at NBC during Shelley’s time there. If you’re a TV fan and love the inside stories, this is the episode for you! Recorded in the Center of the Coachella Valley Universe, Skip Paige’s Little Bar. 10 Jul 2023 | Guest: Brad Parker, Musician | 00:53:20
The NBA has a logo. It’s the silhouette of Jerry West. He was chosen because of the wide-ranging impact he had on the game. If modern music had a logo, it’s very possible that it would be this episode’s guest on Big Conversation, Little Bar. Brad Parker has been a part of the music industry since the 1960s. Not just part of part of it. He’s been a part of the ENTIRE music industry. If you have listened to any music in the last 50 years, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ve heard something of Brad’s. Either a song he recorded, or a song he wrote. Brad lived a life that many of us have heard about, but never experienced. From playing with some of the top musicians in music history, to writing a #1 Country Song. And, everything else that came with that life. “Music is Being.” We heard about how music was organic, how the audience was part of the experience. “When you left the induction center, you didn’t go home. You went to the war”. Being a young man during the draft and the Vietnam war informed a lot of the person Brad became. And you’ll hear him tell these stories and so much more. Recorded in the center of the Coachella Valley universe, Little Bar, join co-hosts Patrick Evans and Randy Florence as they have another fascinating discussion with a true music Icon.
