03 Dec 2021 | 1. Beyond Awareness Introduction | 00:16:46
Is it appropriate to talk about disability? Is there a way to respectfully talk about disability? What words do I use when talking about disability? How do I teach kids about disability? Why do I feel awkward when I talk about disability? Are there any good resources out there to teach me about disability? This show will serve educators, parents, and community members who strive to learn and/or teach about disability in a research-based and respectful way, moving beyond simple awareness, and diving into inclusive and socially responsive conversations. In this introductory episode, Diana shares her personal journey and transformation that led her from conducting traditional disability awareness activities and events, to reframing disability awareness into a social justice movement.

03 Dec 2021 | 3. The Importance of Relationship Featuring Shannen McKinney | 00:26:15
Shannen McKinney has spent her career in the service of students, teachers, support staff and administrators. It was during her undergraduate studies when she attended a job fair and subsequently began her first position in special education working with individuals with significant behavioral needs. While working at the non-public school, she realized there was a segment of the population who had been hidden and silenced. She fell in love with her work and the students who came into her life—and finally decided on a college major! This also meant she would indeed follow in her mother’s magical footsteps and embrace teaching as a career. Over the past two decades, she has held a variety of positions in education including instructional assistant, education specialist, autism specialist, and behavior analyst, and is currently the Program Specialist on the Support for Teams in Autism and with At-Risk Students (STAARS). She enjoys spending time playing outdoors, baking yummy goodies indoors, laughing with her amazing teenage daughter and phenomenal friends, and holding her loved ones tightly, but her true passion lies in helping people develop a deeper understanding of our shared human experience through listening, learning, mentoring, and advocating. In this episode, Shannen discusses the value of relationship with students and with colleagues as we strive to create inclusive environments in our schools.

In this episode, Diana chats with Andy Imparato, Executive Director of Disability Rights California, about educational equity and civil rights. During this robust conversation, Andy reflects the lesson he's learned that civil rights laws do not enforce themselves, and that parents and guardians are put in the position to be "private attorney generals" when educated about their children's rights. He advocates for teacher training for equitable, modern classrooms. He also asks administrators to operate from the core values that brought them into education in the first place. He encourages disabled students seek out people who view their disability as normal, and as an asset. Andy passionately shares the belief that "inequality is not inevitable" and with some imagination, coordination, and commitment, everyone in our communities can thrive.

03 Jun 2022 | 17. The Right to Communication with Darlene Hanson | 00:46:47
In this episode, Darlene takes us deep into the idea of the right to communication and what that means in terms of controversial AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) methods. She directs listeners to the understanding of communication as a right, and that prohibiting these strategies is, in effect, denying people their right to communication, which is an ADA violation. Darlene distinguishes between the more commonly known strategies of facilitated communication, Rapid Prompting Method, and Spelling to Communicate. And she gives practical tips for how to engage with someone from a "presumption of competence" perspective. I personally LOVE this episode so much. I hope that it inspires many people toward inclusivity in communication!

In this episode, Dr. Toni Saia defines "Inspiration Porn" and provides examples of common misconceptions about the disability experience that are perpetuated through popular inspirational comments, memes, news stories, etc. She challenges us to think about the origins of our tendency toward inspiration porn, to think about the difference between our intentions and the impact of what we say and do, and to find alternatives that respect the lived experiences of disabled people.

05 Aug 2022 | 21. Talking About Disability in Schools with Dr. Christa Bialka | 00:36:19
In this episode, Diana Pastora Carson and Dr. Christa Bialka discuss what research tells us about how we do or do not discuss disability in our classrooms, as well as what holds teachers back from having conversations about disability in schools. She implores us to begin talking about disability because "when you don't talk about disability, you're ignoring somebody's experience, and the barriers that they might encounter." But she says that when we talk about disability, it should be in the context of how it shows up in our society. For example, we should be talking about disability history and culture, and framing disability as a social identity.

11 Feb 2023 | 29. A Parent Perspective on Inclusion with Shubha Bala | 00:52:58
In This EpisodeSo often there is a disconnect between what parents and students want and need, and what school systems offer students. In this episode, Diana talks with Shubha Bala, a parent of a pre-schooler. In spite of his young age, Shubha and her partner have already felt disappointment and frustration with their son's school experience. We discuss some of the ideological differences that have been at the heart of the embattled territory between family and school. My hope with providing a forum for Shubha to voice her perspectives, concerns, and successes is that my esteemed colleagues would gain a new understanding and appreciation for the love and commitment that guides families in advocating for their children. And with this new understanding, a renewed commitment to embracing the big picture in the scheme of long-term life quality for our individual students and their families. Furthermore, may those of us in the education field recognize that we are sometimes unintentionally vilified not through any fault of our own, but by our automatic association with an education system that is often outdated and inherently ableist and oppressive, both to students and educators. It is also my hope that this interview with Shubha will provide families hope and a sense of validation, community, and empowerment. Please feel free to share this episode far and wide to help me take our communities Beyond Awareness!

19 May 2023 | 31. Autism Siblings, Presumption of Competence & Spelling to Communicate with Danny & Tara Whitty | 00:45:15
In this episode, Danny Whitty and his sister, Tara, talk with Diana about the importance of spelling to communicate, communication regulation partners, and their sibling relationship. This is an emotional episode, as Diana, Tara and Danny connect and relate to one another with raw authenticity and love. If you are curious about autism, and especially non or minimally-speaking autistic communicators, then come right in and allow your world view of autism to be impacted in an irreversible way. Note: In this episode, Danny is typing on a laminated letter board. His sister, Tara, reads out loud the letters as he types. And at times, Danny is able to speak his own words. These moments of Danny's communication are magical. Although it may sound different than you are used to hearing in interviews and podcast episodes, I have not edited out those moments. They are authentically, Danny's communication. These letters and Danny's spoken words are also reflected in the transcript.

20 Oct 2023 | 35. Mainstreaming, Integration, Inclusion & Belonging with Dr. Shelley Moore | 00:39:32
In this episode, Diana has a conversation with Dr. Shelley Moore. Shelley is a Canadian educator and an expert on special education who also has taught in the U.S. She is the author of One Without the Other, which I've read a couple times, as well as her upcoming book, All for One, which I look forward to reading. Shelly is a teacher researcher, YouTuber and extraordinary speaker. She advocates for inclusive education and seeks to reform iep programs to better suit the needs of individual students. Shelley is so well-informed as it relates to disability diversity and educational policies related to students with disabilities, both in the US and in Canada. And she's brilliant and talented and funny, and really just a good human. Shelley and I discussed the concept of inclusion and she distinguished between mainstreaming, integration, and inclusion with a real sense of belonging in one's community. She compares the intent of LRE (least restrictive environment) with what we have been doing in public education, as well as individuals with disabilities and families as the intended beneficiaries of a continuum of services. Shelley also shares on a personal level of what her "why" is, and some fun rapid-fire questions at the end of the interview. I hope you'll enjoy this episode as much as I did!

31 May 2024 | 39. Inclusionary Practices for Schools with Dr. Cassie Martin | 00:19:07
In this episode, Diana interviews Dr. Cassie Martin, Executive Director of Special Education for the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State. She was also the architect of the Inclusionary Practices Demonstration Sites Project, which is what our conversation was focused around. She talks about the 16 demonstration sites that highlight inclusionary practices, and why and how she and her team brought these schools into existence, and how they have transitioned into a movement, and now a network. Appreciative Inquiry, equity, social justice, and research-based inclusive practices have made her model successful with educators and students. Dr. Martin also discusses the technical pieces as well as adaptive pieces and relationships that must be addressed in order to be successful in inclusive schooling. My favorite quote from our time together is when Dr. Martin states that "Research tells us that when we follow the path of the most marginalized, and learn from them, then it removes barriers for every single one of the students in our schools."
