15 Mar 2021Sarah Walsh: One Day Better00:42:07

Pinch us. Dale, Eric and Cheryl are so lucky to have one of the hearts and soul of the Matildas as our special guest this pod - Sarah Walsh.

Background

Sarah Walsh's twitter profile identifies her as a “Matilda at heart” but "Walshy" is so much more than a footballer and has become surely one of the most influential women in the game.

Debuting in 2004 in New Zealand, Sarah Walsh appeared 76 times for the Matildas including being part of the Championship-winning 2010 AFC Women's Asian Cup.

Walsh's last played international football 8+ years ago (19 Sep 2012) in a friendly against the United States. Since then she has made a terrific contribution to football and is currently the Head of Women's Football in Australia.

Walsh also played for Sky Blue FC in 2009 before winning the W-League title with Sydney FC in Season 2009/2010, later playing for the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Pod Summary

Sarah Walsh discusses her recent International Women's Day presentation on "Imposter Syndrome" at the Future Women Leadership Summit.

The pillars of Legacy '23 also get some attention discussing the XI Principles and the Memorandum of Understanding between Football Australia and Football NZ

We reflect on the amazing footballers Sarah Walsh played, including those still in the game (Melissa Barbieri, Leena Khamis, Clare Polkinghorne), and those who are making a difference off the park (Kate Gill - PFA Co-Chief Executive, Heather Garriock - CEO Australian Taekwondo, and previous podcast guest Leah Blayney (Head Coach – Australia Young Matildas (U20) and Future Matildas).

28 Mar 2021Rae Dower - Hashtag Opportunity00:45:13

Two special guests and one very excited Cheryl, as Molly Appleton and Rae Dower join the pod to discuss the recent U17 training camp.

The camp is the first in the lead up to Round 1 of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2022 Qualifiers to be held in Cessnock, NSW in September 2021.

Introduction: Rae Dower

  • Football Australia Women's Technical Advisor (contracted to end 2022)
  • Head Coach Women's U17 National Team (since 2017)
  • AFC Pro Diploma
  • Canberra United Head Coach (seasons 8&9)
  • Career as Detective Sergeant - 20 years

Summary

Cheryl's curiosity leads to questions about:

  • Ripping the bandaid off for a big career change from the Police Force to Football?
  • The connection between teaching and coaching?
  • Are there enough opportunities for women to coach professionally/full time?
  • What's the scope of a Technical Advisor role?

Molly lifts the lid on the East Coast bias (hint: there is none) and queries the age eligibility changes for the Asian Cup.

All over, a super pos to listen to. Get into it.

Announced this week, the Matildas are set to play (16) Denmark and (5) Sweden in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics.

Denmark

Don't be fooled by Denmark's ranking, this will be a cracking match for the Aussies to challenge a team led by Pernille Harder and likely a squad playing in top leagues around Europe and England.

Denmark missed the 2019 World Cup in what was arguably due to a forfeited qualifier against Sweden. Akin to the 2015 Matildas' strike, the De rød-hvide took action in a pay dispute with the Danish FA.

They also released "If I were a man” to highlight their fight to be recognised on equal footing with their male counterparts.

Brings back memories of this satire from Norway's North Sea (ish) neighbours, which is well worth a watch or a re-watch.

Sweden

It's quite an opportunity to play a friendly Sweden, a team the Matildas will encounter in game 2 of their Olympic campaign.

Highly ranked, 2016 Silver medalists, a recent 1-1 draw with the USA (April) and a significant advantage over Australia in their previous encounters (7W, 3D, 1L). With just two players, Nilla Fischer (182) and captain Caroline Seger (204), they have close to 400 international matches under their belts.

Melbourne Victory fans will also remember Jess Samuelsson who has now amassed 50 international caps.

Koalas came racing back in the second half, levelling the scores via Tahlia Macri and NPL NSW’s version of the Road Runner, Sophie Harding. Norway Toppserien Round 9

  • (9) Klepp IL (Nikola Orgill) played Kolbotn away on the weekend, with a second successive 3-0 loss. Nikola was not on the match card, having strained a hammy last week.
  • (4) LSK Kvinner FK (Karly Roestbakken) drew 1-1 at home against champs Vålerenga, who lost influential captain Sherida Spitse to Dutch football (Ajax) this season and were also without Elise Thorsnes for this game, well known to Canberra United fans. LSK looked like they were good for the win but a bizarre goal equalised the game with just over 10 minutes to go, as Norwegian left-back Emilie Woldwik headed the ball powerfully onto the side of the head of forward Celin Bizet inside the penalty area, only to see the ball loop into the top left corner, leaving the LSK keeper no chance.
  • The results see both teams tied on 19 points, with Vålerenga just ahead on goal difference.
  • Karly is returning to Norway this week.
  • No games now till August 7

Iceland Round 10

  • (3) UMF Selfoss (Emma Checker) First win for Emma as captain, 1-0 at home vs Keflavik (one of the promoted teams) further indicating they may be coming out of a slump. They retain 3rd place and play Þór/KA (‘Thor’) on July 21.
