15 May 2016133: Julie Stevanja00:52:31
Julie Stevanja is co-founder and CEO of Stylerunner.com Again, her story is bloody inspirational. In particular what I love about her tale is not only the grit to keep going, and her ability to see a gap in the market - but how she knew and valued the power of her personal network so much that she relocated back to Australia to build the business, and now is running an internationally massive retail operation from an office in Alexandria in Sydney.  A quick word about prep.  You know me. I always prepare  However on this day I rolled into the interview and realized I'd forgotten to put my SD card back into my recorder, and lost 15 minutes of interview time because I had to run across the street to Sun Studios which is the big fancy photography studio set up here in Sydney, buy an SD card, and then sprint back across the street.  So apologies for the length of the show today - don't worry, I have put my spare SD card back into my podcast kit.

14 Oct 2018256: Emma Roche01:26:32

Emma Roche is an Australian author and whole-food plant-based food advocate who lives year-round in Belgium.

You can find her on instagram @plantplate

I’m very aware of the privilege that I have as a white, male, middle class guy that I can afford to live a plant-based life.

Indeed at times in my life I have definitely gone overboard and bought the $20 jar of organic virgin dirt single origin solar-powered peanut butter.

However it doesn’t have to be like that.

And lately I’ve been getting more and more frugal about how I feed myself to live this way, and you know what - chickpeas are cheap. Rice is cheap. Veggies are cheap.

It doesn’t have to be a Gwennyth Paltrow $470 a week for one person grocery bill. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be.

This is where Emma Roche comes in.

She’s written a couple of brilliant books about living a whole-food plant based life on a budget. In fact they do what they say on the box

“Whole Food Plant Based on $5 a day” is the book I first found, and it spread the message that you can feed yourself and your family well, and cheaply, on less than $50 a week per person - which is a pretty excellent price point if you ask me. Her books are available at plantplate.com

If you’re new to the idea of eating this way, or you’ve been curious about it but don’t know how to make the first steps away from the food you grew up knowing, or you're befuddled at the $10 macrobiotic sprouted tempeh that you think you need to put in each meal - this episode is for you.

A warning, if you haven’t eaten yet and you’re listening to this on an empty stomach, you’ll want to cook something delicious today I can guarantee it.

Emma’s a great chat, and we caught up over Skype from her home in Europe. Enjoy this conversation with Emma Roche.

05 Jun 2016136: Alice Fraser01:06:33
Alice Fraser is a comedian, writer, and ex-lawyer from Australia. She's also host of the wonderfully cerebral podcast "Tea With Alice" which I'm happy to have been a guest on.  We recorded both her show and mine on the same day, and if there's parts of this chat that don't make sense, perhaps go find the episode she and I did on her show to flesh things out.  Alice has a very interesting story, a story about following what you believe in, finding your truth - and what monetary rewards balance against that truth or even the joy of that journey.

13 Aug 2017194: Morgan Koegel01:08:01

Morgan Koegel is the CEO of OneGirl.org.au

They’re a non-profit that are on a mission to educate one million girls across Africa. They believe that every girl has a right to an education and work predominantly across Sierra Leone and Uganda.

Morgan has had an interesting career that’s also included working in prisons in Victoria where she helped again with transforming lives through education.

These two things alone are incredible reasons to hear Morgan’s story - however, there’s something else quite pertinent.

Morgan is the adult child of a Same Sex Marriage.

She has to Mums and we talk at length about her experience, what she felt as a child growing up and how she feels now.

If you’re worried about how things might turn out for the children, if you’re concerned for the welfare of other people’s kids who aren’t born yet - have a listen to how Morgan describes her perspective on the situation.

I hope it sheds some light on things for you.

So draw a glass of clean and safe water from the tap, maybe even visit a flushing toilet during this podcast, and revel in the privilege that we have as living in a modern society as you listen to Morgan talk about how she’s trying to bring girls across the world opportunity that they otherwise might never have, and enjoy this chat with Morgan Koegel.

21 Jan 2018217: Jan Fran02:12:07

My guest today is Jan Fran. Find her on twitter @Jan__Fran

Jan is the co-host of the nightly SBS news show “The Feed”.

She’s an incredibly skilled journalist and documentary producer who’s covered stories in places you’d be to frightened even fly over.

Her recent work is available to see online at https://www.sbs.com.au including her documentary “America’s first climate change refugees” which we talk about at length in this conversation.

Jan speaks three languages, but because I only speak one we did this podcast in English.

Her story is inspirational, and it made me happy - because as the world careens to ever more critical problems that will only be solved with a global decision making process, Jan will be there to help us make sense of whatever is going on.

This conversation does cover some pretty grim subject matter, so when you hear us talking about her time working in Africa if you’re feeling a bit sensitive to stories of kids in hardship you can skip forward about ten minutes and you’ll be safely on the other side.

This is a long one, but it’s worth ever moment.

Please enjoy this rigorous and fun conversation with the incredibly talented Jan Fran.

10 Dec 2017211: Nigel Marsh01:38:01

Nigel Marsh is an Author, Speaker, Body Image activist and the powerhouse behind “The Sydney Skinny” which is one of the largest organised skinny dips in the world, in an effort to promote body positivity and a healthier relationship with your self.

Nigel wrote the best selling book “Fat, Forty and Fired”, and has a brilliant outlook on life that will challenge whatever amount of comfort you have in your comfort zone, causing you to look at what it is you’re doing with your day, or even your life. He’s a very good salesman because after this chat, I signed up to his swim - even though I’m utterly terrified of being naked in public, even just shirtless in public - but if you sign up to the Sydney skinny, you’ll find me there. http://thesydneyskinny.com.au

Nigel has a brilliant Ted talk which is about work/life balance which I thoroughly recommend, link is https://www.ted.com/talks/nigel_marsh_how_to_make_work_life_balance_work.

We get deep on this one, and we even get into the talk about drinking - as Nigel and I both share the fact that we don’t drink.

This chat might challenge you - might challenge how you look at your work, your life, your body and maybe even your drinking.

That’s a lot to pack into a conversation - so let’s get to it.

Wherever you are right now, at home, at the gym, driving, in a plane, hiking, walking, running, gardening, kayaking, or any other kind of thing that you’re doing - thanks for having me, and enjoy this conversation with Nigel Marsh.

Lindsay McDougall is one of Australia's icons of alternative culture. For nearly twenty years he's been the guitar player for the iconic Australian punk band Frenzal Rhomb, and for ten years was a radio announcer on the national youth radio network JJJ. Lindsay is never backward in coming forward about his thoughts on fairness - and in this conversation we discuss all kinds of expectations of fairness from race relations, to gender issues, climate issues and what it was like being a staunch lefty vegan who's dad was a member of the right-wing Australian Liberal party.  We met at Lindsay's home in Newton in Sydney, surrounded by more guitars, books and rock and roll memorabilia than I could possibly comprehend - for a cup of tea and a chat while the bustling of King St continued below. Ladies and gentlemen - Lindsay McDougall.  This episode is brought to you by THE ICONIC who are offering my listeners 10% off full price styles with any purchase over $99. 10 Jul 2016141: Steve Beckett01:26:38

Steve Beckett is a marketing and product growth exec at Zwift.com - go have a look at that website for a quick video demo.  What is Zwift?  But he comes from a legacy of bike industry gigs, and this chat is pertinent at the moment with Tour De France being on - because he was there on the ground floor for the formation of Team Sky, one of the most dominant forces of cycling in recent years to emerge.  This is a great story about how tech evolution in one sector can make a transformative leap ahead in another.

Even if you haven't ridden a bike in years, this might make you want to capture that freedom one more time.

Donita Menon is the Grief and Bereavement coordinator at the Leukaemia Foundation Australia, her job is to talk both with people diagnosed, and with families before and after the death of a loved one.

She has a brilliant story and I can’t wait for you to hear it.

It is fortuitous that we spoke on this day, as we’d had the podcast scheduled in for months in advance - My Mum was in partial remission and was still living independently when we booked it in. But by the time we came around to recording this - as you may know mum has passed away.

We didn’t have a therapy session - but what you’ll hear is a conversation about death, dying and living that is very real for both Donita and myself.

Thanks for listening and enjoy this conversation with Donita Menon.

03 Nov 2019309: Erin Brockovich01:14:49

Erin Brockovich is probably the most famous name in Law in the world. Making a name for herself when she went up against utility company Pacific Gas & Electric and helped bring together the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. history on behalf of the people of Hinkley, CA who had been affected by polluted water.

Erin went on to become instrumental in numerous other high profile cases, usually up against massive corporate entities who are using their size to get away with either polluting the environment or otherwise neglecting humans basically.

Erin was out in Australia doing work with Shine Lawyers - whom she’s been working with for over ten years now, in particular around the issue of PFAS, a toxic chemical contained in firefighting foam used widely in Australia between the 1970s and 2000. The substance was sprayed over defence force bases, shipping ports, and regional firefighting stations for decades. It leaches into the soil and surrounding waterways, causing contamination. In 1987, American authorities wrote to the Australian Government to warn about the dangers of PFAS but nothing was done. Research in the United States has linked exposure to PFAS to cancer and a dozen other diseases. Residents in many Australian towns, including Bullsbrook in Western Australia where Erin visited last week, say their dogs have been riddled with cancer and die young. They can’t drink the tap water. They bathe infants in bottled water. There have also been reports of birth defects. Unfortunately, it is difficult to prove in Australian law causation between exposure to this chemical and disease.

The people at Shine reached out to me to ask if I’d have Erin on the show, so of course I said yes.

I’m terrified to speak about this kind of thing, so I know enough that backing away from it is not the path to freedom - I have to lean into it.

So I flew my self on a carbon-offset flight down to Melbourne to speak with this incredible human being.

Erin is as you would expect. Incredibly Clever, Blisteringly Fast, Tall, Powerful, Passionate and a Firehose of Fury.

I get why she’s good at what she does.

Because if you’re going toe to toe in a boardroom with a company that’s got political donations protecting them, you’ll want to have a secret weapon up your sleeve - and that secret weapon is Erin Brockovich.

This one blew my socks off.

Find her on instagram @the_real_erin_brockovich, let her know you heard her here.

And come now to the beautiful Langham hotel in Melbourne to sit eye to eye with one of the best legal minds of our time, and one of the most ferocious environmental activists you’ll ever encounter.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Erin Brockovich.

19 Feb 2019270: Adam Guthrie Part 200:38:17

Adam Guthrie is a Chef and Wellness coach that splits his time between Byron Bay and Bali.

Living a life chasing what he thought was success, and at the frighteningly young age of 39, Adam suffered a heart attack.

Unlike many men who simply take the stent and don’t change their diet and just stay on the downward spiral, Adam made a lasting commitment to change - and as he describes managed to get off his heart medication through taking a path of more physical activity and a plant based diet.

But he didn’t just do a little bit of exercise, Adam worked his way through subtle daily increases in effort to training for and completing an Iron Man.

Adam’s story is one of incredible inspiration.

Of a health care system that mightn’t be open to solutions right in front of our eyes.

A story of self discovery, forgiveness and compassion for ones own past, and a commitment to sharing the joy of his new life with others.

You can find out more about what Adam is doing at ifeelgood.com.au he’s also on IG @adamguthrie

15 Oct 2017203: Easkey Britton01:14:42

Dr Easkey Britton is a passionate ocean advocate from Donegal in the rugged North-West of Ireland.  Find her on Instagram at @easkeysurf, where you can follow her adventures around the world.

She and I met in Amsterdam when I attended the THNK school of creative leadership.

Easkey is the co-founder of Waves Of Freedom - which uses surfing as a creative medium for social change.

Last time she was on this podcast she described in incredible detail her joy of teaching women and girls in Iran to surf on the Caspian Sea.

Easkey is an inspirational public speaker, and her TED Talk “Just Add Surf” is a must-see.

Easkey is a fascinating woman, who’s passion for the ocean and protecting the oceans and therefore all life on earth is something to behold.

She’s just become a founding member of Ocean Collectiv - dedicated to building a model for sustainable ocean management around the world.

Glad I’ve got Easkey on the show today and I really want you to hear this one because she’s doing some incredible work at the moment in the space of how contact with nature influences wellness.

I’ll let her explain it more, but she’s got some important stuff to say about getting out of the house, putting the phone down and really looking at the world - as a way of making you feel better.

I hope you enjoy this conversation I had over skype with Easkey Britton.

01 May 2016131: Craig Bruce01:09:12
Craig Bruce is one of the most iconic names in the Australian Radio Industry. For over 20 years he worked for the company which is now Southern Cross Austereo - first as an announcer, then as assistant program director and eventually rose to the role of group content director - means he's in charge of everything and everyone you hear on air that isn't a commercial.  His reputation for spotting and developing new talent is beyond par, most notably with his development and then anointing of Kyle Sandilands as the Sydney Breakfast Radio anchor in 2004. Craig had played an important role in my career as well - he was at the first station I ever worked at and then was a part of bringing me to SAFM for my breakout into daytime radio. He's got a new podcast which it available at radiogamechangers.com - where he speaks with those in the industry that have truly disrupted and changed how the business of radio works. Craig is the first person I called when I wanted to get back on the air in 2016 and played a huge role in getting me the gig at Hit105 Brisbane even though he had left the company by then. While I've known Craig for the better part of 22 years, I found out things about him in this conversation that I did not know, and I must thank him for his candour and openness to bring up those very personal moments in his life - as I believe that hearing his story might help someone listening right now who may have faced a similar situation. Thank you for being here. Enjoy Craig Bruce.

15 Jul 2018243: Abdullah Zeinab01:25:54

Abdullah Zeinab is a plant-based ultra-endurance cyclist, a man with a crystal clear outlook on life and the capacity for incredible self-awareness. You can find him on YouTube by searching The Glucose Network, or follow him on Instagram @abdullahzeinab

Abdullah is a prominent figure in both the plant-based and cycling community, his videos online and live streams are the stuff of legend.

However - recently Abdullah completed the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, an ultra-endurance, unsupported bike race from the Indian Ocean in Western Australia, across the bottom of the continent all the way to the Sydney Opera House and the Pacific Ocean.

The 2018 edition of the race was officially cancelled just hours before the event began, however with riders from all over the world already gathered in Fremantle, the GPS trackers already fitted to the bikes, many riders chose to ride the route at their own risk.

Abdullah averaged more than 500km a day as he rode his bike across the Nullarbor Plain (literally the Latin name for No Tree) and ended up over 5000km later finishing the course in incredible time.

Abdullah’s story of what he has not only discovered about himself through his life but most definitely what he discovered about himself on that bike ride - is truly inspirational.

I was so impressed with Abdullah as a human. He came here to the flat with his lovely girlfriend, and we sat across from each other while he gratefully opened up to my questions, fearlessly exploring the areas I asked him about.

He talks fast, so this one might need a second listen in case you miss something.

I’m so grateful Abdullah came around, and I’m so grateful he was so open as this conversation took some turns, and went into some pretty deep concepts that might challenge you, and might even open your eyes to a way of seeing the world you hadn't thought about before.

It certainly did for me.

Enjoy this conversation with Abdullah Zeinab.

31 Mar 2019277: Tanya Hennessy01:29:20

Tanya Hennessy is a comedian, author, broadcaster and YouTube superstar.

She’s currently on the radio every weekend right around the country, on the internet being very, very funny - and about to be on Bachelor in Paradise UNPACKED where she and her colleagues watch every episode of The Bachelor in Paradise and react to it - like a mini version of Goggle Box. It’s extraordinarily funny.

That’s mainly because she is extraordinarily funny too.

Tanya has an incredible story to tell, and as a woman in Australian broadcasting has some excellent lessons about success when you’re up against it.

A note here at the top of the show.

Tanya wrote quite extensively in her book “Am I Doing This Right?” about body image.

She wrote a whole chapter on it.

During this conversation she brings it up, and we begin to talk about it.

I called her the other day to double and triple check to make sure that what we talked about was ok to go up on the podcast, and she assured me that it was.

I am no stranger to body image issues - having been 112kg at one point, fat shamed by paparazzi and bullied in the press, I am well aware of what it is to be bigger in the public eye.

My own story involves compulsive eating, portion control, and binge eating.

So where I was coming from was a place of someone who works every day to keep on top of those compulsive behaviours, someone who tries to do the work every day around making sure what I eat is the right thing and the right amount, and someone who tries to train every day so that I am healthy and feel good in my own body.

That’s where I was standing when she and I dove into that often taboo discussion.

It might be confronting to hear, and you might get an itchy outrage trigger finger - but I’d ask you to listen with an open ear and open heart to what the two of us were discussing and the reality of the business we both work in, and indeed the realities of health outcomes when you’re heavier. I can now officially say I’m a man that’s nearly 50. If I don’t stay fit and watch what I eat it’s a slippery slope to blood pressure pills, type 2 diabetes, erectile dysfunction and a stent in my arteries.

So that’s where we both were really when we talked about what we talked about. I hope you can listen in the spirit of which it was conversed - that of two colleagues discussing the reality of where we work, the nature of our business and the plain facts about health.

Tanya is snort-laugh funny, so I’d caution against drinking or eating when listening to this episode.

If you want to let Tanya know you heard her here on the show - she’s online, mostly FB and Youtube - just search Tanya Hennessy.

Her book is out wherever books are out and Bachelor in Paradise unpacked goes live right after our first episode on April 9th.

So you ready?

Get set for a fabulous sit down chat with Tanya Hennessy.

15 Sep 2019302: Rosie Waterland01:27:10

My guest today is Author, writer, comedian, and award winning podcaster Rosie Waterland.

Her books “The Anti Cool Girl” and “Every Lie I’ve Ever Told” have been best sellers and won critical acclaim for good reason - her unflinching ability to tell a harrowing tale while making you laugh is a rare skill indeed.

Rosie’s award winning podcast “My Mum Says My Memoir Is A Lie” is everywhere you find podcasts and her new TV podcast “Just The Gist” is to be found in similar places.

This is Rosie’s second time on the show - we first met her here on episode 101 about four years ago.

I’ll say right off the bat that this conversation deals with childhood trauma, suicide, mental illness and psychiatric hospitals. If you need someone to talk to - don’t wait - do the right thing and pick up the phone. Also - there’s plenty of Survivor talk, so if you’re not caught up - get on it before listening.

Briggs is an Indigenous Australian rapper, actor, comedian, and record label owner from Shepparton, Victoria.

From his breakout album in 2009, Briggs has gone on to dominate the hip hop scene here and abroad.

He’s released four solo albums, as well as the landmark “Reclaim Australia” with AB Original - an album that spoke volumes to the conversation about race relations in our country.

A.B. Original were recently crowned APRA’s 2018 Songwriters of the Year and in 2017 won the ARIAs for Best Independent Release and Best Urban Album and Triple J’s J Award for Album of the Year for their album Reclaim Australia.

Briggs' new single is called “Life Is Incredible” a shot to the gut aimed at life expectancy of Indigenous Australians compared to the rest of the population.

Like all great artists - he performs to the top of his intelligence at all times. And as Briggs is a very, very smart man - that makes him a force of nature.

Briggs is also a legit coffee nerd, so there’s a fair chunk of solid coffee talk at the top that will impress anyone who weighs their beans.

20 May 2018235: Jamie Pride01:22:53

Jamie Pride is a serial entrepreneur, Venture Capitalist and author on a mission to help shift the needle on startup culture. Find him on instagram @jamiepride

We’ve all heard the Cinderella story - two people create an iPhone app, sell their business to Google for $20M after 18 months and now everyone’s taking baths in Lambos and Bitcoin taking Uber Jets to Burning Man.

However that’s not the real story.

92% of startups fail.

And Jamie has a very real and personal experience of failure.

Jamie was formerly a partner at consulting firm Deloitte, and then the CEO of realestate.com.au.

He rode a rocket ship of success to the stars, founding more than six technology start ups, raising over $16M in funding and even listing his HR startup Refined on the ASX in 2015.

Refined listed and went through the roof, within 30 weeks the stock shot up to a Market Capitalisation of over $200M, and overnight dropped to $20.

He had investors who’d poured millions of dollars into his business turning up to his house in anger, and he even had to deal with death threats.

Jamie self-medicated and his health plummeted before he hit a dangerous rock-bottom both mentally and physically which he goes into in this conversation.

Now on a path of recovery, Jamie is committed to preventing other start-up founders from going through what he went through, by helping them not only understand the astronomical odds stacked against them - but also to help founders build resilience, so that they can fail, and then learn from that failure, then fail again and again until finally they succeed.

He’s written a brilliant book on the matter - it’s called Unicorn Tears which is out now, and it focuses on mental health and resilience in the start up scene. It’s well worth a read if you’re an independent business person, there’s a lot of valuable content in there, I certainly resonated with the attribution of your product’s success to your self-worth - which he and I discuss in this show.

We may not all be coders or tech start up geniuses - but all of us have ambitions and goals, and all of us can learn from Jamie’s story.

He has a particularly excellent philosophy when it comes to mornings and about the use of his phone - I certainly have changed my game since I spoke with him, I hope that what he says can resonate with you too.

Enjoy this conversation with Jamie Pride.

09 Jun 2019287: Stephen Dupont01:31:52

Stephen Dupont is a conflict photojournalist from Australia.

For thirty years he’s travelled the world photographing people, places and cultures at  their most beautiful, their most vulnerable, and often their most violent.

Stephen is a rare breed of person, the kind that willingly forges forward into a conflict zone, hoping to get the right shot that will tell the story of those in side the conflict so that those on the outside world may bear witness to it and maybe do something to change it.

As you’d imagine, Stephen has seen and documented moments of humans being their most horrendous to each other.

From witnessing American Soldiers burning the bodies of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan - a photograph that changed the rules of engagement around the world - to being blown up in a suicide bombing that killed fifteen people - Stephen has seen and documented and lived and breathed and smelled the horrors of humanity, and he’s lived to talk about it. To share what he’s seen.

Stephen is fascinating to talk to, and if your’e into photography you can catch him at Aperture Australia, the largest photography conference in Southern Hemisphere is set to return to Sydney International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, Sydney on the weekend of 22-23 June - more details at apertureaustralia.com.au

If you like what you hear, you can let him know on IG - @stephenmdupont, but for now come to my apartment for a cup of coffee with a truly fantastic Australian, Stephen Dupont.

***A note! I get confused in this episode and mistakenly said that photographer Bob King had passed away.

He's thankfully very much alive!

I got confused - Bob asked me about a photo I took of him and another shooter who did pass away for the funeral programme and in the moment I got the names confused.

03 Feb 2019268: Johann Hari Part 100:55:04

Johann Hari is the author of two New York Times best-selling books.

His first, ‘Chasing the Scream: the First and Last Days of the War on Drugs’, is currently being adapted into a major Hollywood feature film, and into a non-fiction documentary series. You can search for his Ted Talk “Everything you know about addiction is wrong” online or in the show notes.

His most recent book, ‘Lost Connections: Uncovering The Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions’ really struck a chord with me - because he describes that depression and anxiety are a less about what’s going on in your brain but more about what’s going on in your environment.

That the causes of Anxiety and Depression while in some parts indeed genetic - environment and how we live goes a long way to affect us.

To quote him directly:

"If you are depressed and anxious, you are not a machine with malfunctioning parts. You are a human being with unmet needs. The only real way out of our epidemic of despair is for all of us, together, to begin to meet those human needs – for deep connection, to the things that really matter in life.”

Over the course of the book, Johann identifies nine different causes of Anxiety and Depression and offers solutions to the issues he talks about, but at the bare minimum, what he’s found over his exhaustive research is stuff we all seemed to know already:

We as humans need to feel we belong.

We need to feel we’re good at stuff.

We need to feel valued by others.

We need to feel secure about the future.

We need to feel that our life and work has meaning.

Take those five things away, and it’s easy to see how you can slip off the edge of the world.

Two quick notes:

We talk about medication in this conversation.

Do NOT stop or change your dose of medication without talking to your doctor. We discuss the helps and hindrances of medication - and I disclose as I have done with you many times that meds saved my life, they helped me incredibly, until they didn’t. And then it was time to find a way to live without them. But that is my journey and my journey alone - it was a decision made by me and my doctors together over the course of many months.

I’ll say it again, Do NOT stop or change your dose of medication without talking to your doctor.

Also: This conversation covers issues such as severe childhood trauma, including sexual assault and violence. So if that’s a trigger for you when you hear Johann say “this is tough for me to talk about but I’ve been trying to do it more in interviews” - skip forward about ten minutes and you should emerge ok on the other side.

I can’t thank Johann enough for being on the show.

His new book Lost Connections is out NOW in Australia in Paperback , and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a total game-changer.

We did catch up over Skype and internet being what it is in my country - there’s a few glitches here and there, apologies - we can Fax Scott Morrison and ask where out information superhighway is.

I hope the glitches don’t detract too much from your enjoyment of this superb chat - Enjoy part one of my conversation over Skype with Johann Hari.

09 Sep 2018251: Jarrod McKenna01:35:25

My guest today is Jarrod McKenna.

Jarrod McKenna the is the Teaching Pastor at Cornerstone Church in Perth, he is the co-founder of "First Home Project", a community welcoming housing and “giving a hand up not a hand-out” to recently arrived refugees, and is a peace award winning nonviolent social change trainer.

Jarrod obviously a very smart and charismatic man - not many pastors are anything less - but Jarrod is also a man who is voracious in his drive to campaign for positive social change when it comes to asylum seekers and refugees.

Not many folks are willing to risk their lives for a cause - and Jarrod did just that, when he was smuggled onto Manus Island to spend time with and speak with people that our Australian government has detained.

Among those people - are 107 children.

Children like your kids and mine.

Kids who are far from home, scared and needing care and support.

When I pay my taxes, that money gets used for many things that I’m happy about.

Roads, hospitals, infrastructure and social services.

That money is also being used to detain children who had no choice in their situation.

That’s my money. Your money.

Personally - I’m not too happy about it.

Do I have an answer to people arriving to Australia by boat?

Nope.

Is locking up children the answer?

Not as far as I’m concerned.

Jarrod belongs to a church that I have had a few things to do with over the years - and not all of those experiences were positive, but as you’ll hear me say to him - I’ve learned to be quick to see where religious people are right.

Just because I have a different idea of what might be ‘god’ or a ‘higher power’ doesn’t mean that I can’t powerfully share values of kindness, compassion and caring for others in our community that a man like Jarrod does.

Jarrod is a good man, a kind man, and I’m very proud to support him and bring this conversation to you.

If you’d like to support Jarrod and his work - www.kidsoffnauru.com is where to start.

We do talk about some pretty heavy stuff here - including talk about suicide. If you or anyone you know needs support - please take control and call lifeline on 13 11 14.

I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jarrod McKenna.

29 Apr 2018232: Shane Perkins01:18:41

My guest today is elite cyclist Shane Perkins, you can find him on twitter @perkoperkins

Shane is an Olympic Games Bronze Medalist, a world champion team sprinter and a former Keirin track world champion.

Shane’s story is one of coming out from under his father’s shadow, committing to a goal and striving for what he wanted.

We might not all be track cyclists capable of exploding an astonishing 2500w of power out of our legs, but we all have something that we want to get done.

Shane’s story is so great because for him, those few seconds standing on the podium while the anthem plays - that’s not what he’s doing this for.

He’s doing it for the journey.

He’s doing it for what he’ll learn about himself on the way to stepping up on that small piece of oblong carpentry that stands on the edge of the track.

That to me is the most inspiring part of Shane’s story - that the journey itself IS the reward.

We caught up over Skype, thanks for allowing me to do more Skype chats guys.

Enjoy this conversation with Shane Perkins.

12 Feb 2017168: Ben St. Lawrence01:14:14

Ben St. Lawrence is an Australian middle-distance runner, a two-time Olympian and an all around interesting guy.

We met at a Story Club show, one of his friends came up and said “hey you should get Ben on the podcast!” and we exchanged email addresses and then we were able to make it happen.

Ben’s not the first Olympian I’ve had on the show, however his story - his particular triumph over adversity and refocus of his life is one worth hearing.

He came to our old place in Bondi just before we moved out, where we talked about finding the thing you were good at, then finding out you were also good at drinking heavily and sleeping in, and then deciding that you’d prefer to do one and not the other.

It’s a great story.

She's currently starring in Wolf Creek 2, available on demand on Stan in Australia - she’s also in the Ridley Scott film Alien Covenant and kicking ass and taking names in the Jackie Chan film Bleeding Steel.

She’s an absolute badass and proved this by showing up at the apartment with her 2yr old when the sitter didn’t eventuate.

Joe Williams is an author, speaker, and activist.

A proud Wiradjuri, 1st Nations Aboriginal man born in Cowra NSW, raised in Wagga NSW.

Joe’s a former elite athlete - having played Rugby League at the highest levels in this country before switching to boxing and becoming the 2x WBF World Jnr Welterweight Champion.

Joe now dedicates his time to traveling the country giving talks and running workshops on Suicide Prevention and Wellbeing Education.

I obviously knew about Joe before I met him, but we got a chance to meet for real at the Brisbane Writer’s Festival where he and Audrey and I shared a wonderful meal at the Greenhouse Canteen, and talked for hours about mental health, the commonalities in our stories, and how Australia just might move beyond where it is when it comes to dealing with our obligation to the 1st Nations Aboriginal People of this country.

Joe’s a tour de force of a man, blisteringly smart an exceptionally talented when it comes to debate - he’s a real powerhouse not only in the world of talking about Mental Health - but also when it comes to talk about race relations in Australia.

I couldn’t be more proud to have Joe on the show, and I’m grateful to do what I can to amplify his message.

Joe’s memoir is called “Defying The Enemy Within: How I silenced the negative voices in my head to survive and thrive” and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

We caught up over Skype a few weeks ago, and I’m grateful that we were able to make it happen.

02 Apr 2017175:Hayden Cox01:16:40

Hayden Cox is a revolutionary surfboard designer from Sydney Australia.

About ten years ago, he disrupted the traditional way of making surfboards much to the chagrin of the incumbent players - and patented a completely new way of making surfboards, which also gave surfers completely new ways to ride those surfboards.

Even if you don’t like the beach - just listen to Hayden’s inspiring journey of how he created his business when he was still in High School, followed his passion relentlessly and created something world-beating along the way.

He’s a lovely human being, came to the house with his wife and business partner - Danielle and they even brought coffee which is always a way to my heart.

Hayden’s got some brilliant business ideas, he thinks about business and the industry he’s in completely differently than many people I’ve met.

His desire to shift the way his industry is focused is fascinating to listen to, and I’m sure you can apply his lessons to your own life no matter what the scale of the change you’re trying to make is.

Hayden outlines a lot of what we talk about in his book “New Wave Vision” which is one of the best business books you’ll read if you’re interested in the new way the global economy is moving, or even if you just need a kick in the butt to get your own work moving along.

Go get his book.

Go ride one of his surfboards.

Or just listen, this one’s a real gift.

Come sit at my kitchen table on the Eames Chairs with Surfer, Shaper, business man and disrupting entrepreneur, Hayden Cox.

06 Jan 2019Summer Special: Kath Koschel01:43:56

Kath Koschel is an incredibly inspiring human. She’s the founder of kindnessfactory.com and has a story that will break your heart three times before it lifts you up into the glowing warm of the collective love of humanity.

This conversation deals with suicide and the effects of road trauma, so if you do need to talk to anyone please seek help from your doctor or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Kath’s story is one of the incredible power of human resilience and the overwhelming kindness of our community at large.

We’re so polarised to believe it’s Left vs Right, Liberal vs Labor, Sustainability vs Environmental pillage, but there’s actually a vast and overwhelming feeling of joy and compassion in our country and Kath’s story proves it.

A world-class athlete struck down by crippling injury at the height of her career, Kath has learned to walk three times in her life. Once as a toddler, and twice as an adult. She’s also had to face the devastation of losing the love of her life to suicide just as the rays of sunshine were starting to warm things up again.

Yet Kath’s outlook on the world, her attitude to kindness, forgiveness and trust in the goodness of the community at large will make you feel a lot better about the world as a whole. Because Kath’s out to show you, me and everyone else that kindness is indeed what we naturally have in our hearts and it’s something that on a self-centred level - actually feels good.

Help her get to 1,000,000 acts of kindness over at kindnessfactory.com, and enjoy this conversation with Kath Koschel.

23 Oct 2016156: Phil Anderson01:02:57

Phil Anderson is an Australian cycling legend.

In a sport dominated by Europeans - Phil was the first non-European rider to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour De France.

Think about the Jamaican Bobsled team turning up at the Olympics but actually winning.

That’s what it was like - a rider from a country no one associated with cycling, riding so well he wore the leader’s jersey during the Tour De France.

He’s still a big part of world cycling, he does a lot for young riders and regularly leads riders around Europe on guided tours of the very same mountains that the big cycling classics are ridden on.

After swimming - Cycling is the 2nd most popular participation sport in the country, more people cycle than AFL, League, Union, Netball and Surfing COMBINED.

It’s a big deal.

With so many bikes on the road, cyclist safety is a subject very close to my heart.

Every cyclist has had a near-death experience, and every cyclist knows someone who’s been seriously injured in a traffic accident.

That’s where the Amy Gillett foundation comes in.

They campaign at a policy level to help change the traffic laws around the country, pushing the “A Meter Matters” message all around Australia.

So here’s a conversation we recorded the weekend of Amy’s Gran Fondo, the big event that the foundation puts on every year - a 120Km along a fully closed Great Ocean Road down in VIC.

And if you like, you can download that app daybreak. Downloaded from wherever you download me.

Hello Sunday morning is all about creating a healthy relationship to alcohol. So when is conversation Chris and I talk a lot about his journey with alcohol, I talk about my journey with alcohol-most of the story you may have heard before but if you’re new it'll be the first time.

This conversation maybe confronting. All I ask is that you listen. If you feel afterwards inspired to approach your next drink differently-good for you. If you don't, also good for you. I thoroughly recommend checking out their website https://www.hellosundaymorning.org/ and just spending some time, exploring various questions they have to ask. You may go there because you're concerned about someone else-well there is support there for you as well.

I'm really grateful Chris came around, he's doing very important work in our community. I'm one of these people as I told you before that can't have one drink because then I'll have 100. You might be lucky, you might be able to only have a few and then stop. Or you might be somewhere between. Whatever your relationship is to alcohol, I'm grateful you're here and I'm really grateful you listening to this.

She was an original cast member on the landmark NZ soap “Shortland Street” and has appeared in brilliant TV such as “Rake”,”Deep Water” and the women’s prison drama “Wentworth”.

Danielle is a fantastic human with a brilliant energy I know you’ll resonate with.

We really go for it in this one, we dig super deep.

It might need two listens.

Danielle rocked up at my house with a helmet in one hand - so I was thinking it’s anything from a Vespa to a Ducati that she got here on. Afterwards I walked her outside with the dog and there’s this massive and very sexy Harley Davidson, which had wonderfully loud pipes, and she handled expertly as she roared off up Bondi Road with a goodbye wink an a smile.

Please let her know you heard her by tagging her on twitter @daniellecormack - she’s also on instagram.

24 Dec 2017213: Quentin Kenihan00:49:50

My guest today is a giant amongst men.

He’s a man by the name of Quentin Kenihan. @qkenihan on Twitter.

We’ve known each other about fifteen years, and I’m glad he’s a mate.

He was born with brittle bone disease, which basically means if you hug him too tight, you’ll break him.

The last time he told me, he’d counted 662 broken bones in his life. That number has probably eclipsed that number by now.

Quentin has been told by too many doctors to count that “this could be it” and “you might not make it”, and yet - his drive, persistence and passion for life keep going and his perspective where we can all learn from gets higher and higher.

Quentin’s been in a wheelchair his whole life - and he lives in Adelaide with his excellent dog Patchy.

Find him at https://twitter.com/qkenihan and https://www.instagram.com/qkenihan/, let him know you heard him here.

I’m glad you’re here.

Merry Xmas.

Enjoy getting to know Quentin Kenihan.

28 Feb 2016122: Georgina Venzin00:54:41
This episode is brought to you by wonderful listeners who have leant their support on Patreon My guest today is Georgina Venzin who’s the Youth Ambassador for the Mindshift Foundation - a place dedicated to raising the self worth of youth across Australia. They develop self-esteem programs for high-school teachers to provide skills to students, they’ve a pilot program happening now at a high school in Brisbane, and are looking to scale statewide and then nationally.  She’s also a high-profile restauranteur in Brisbane, who alongside her Father manages four separate successful restaurants, and they also work at buying floundering restaurants, turning them around and then selling them as successful businesses.  She’s achieved all this by the age of 26.  Georgina has a very interesting story - growing up with both parents who were living with mental health issues, she almost had to raise her own Mum at one point.  Her path to being an ambassador towards self esteem in young people passes through booking herself in for breast enhancement surgery and then pulling out not once, but twice. She also booked herself in for a nose-job, and again - pulled out at the last moment.  Now, Georgina is a beautiful and intelligent woman, savvy and smart who’s the front-facing representative of a successful hospitality company - and she wears no makeup.  “I learned to love myself for who I am” she told me.  It’s one of the more powerful conversations I’ve had since I’ve done this show.  If you’re a woman listening - think about what it would take for you to go through your day to day life, your corporate life - wearing no make up.  Georgina has an inspiring story, and I’m grateful I could share it with you.

25 Sep 2016152: Emma Alberici01:29:57
Emma Alberici is a journalist that lives in Sydney Australia. She hosts the national nightly current affairs show on the ABC, Lateline. Formerly she was the European correspondent for the ABC, and now she holds our public figures accountable every night of the week. Her take-no-prisoners interviewing style has come under critique from people as high up the chain as our Prime Minister - and she and I talk about this, because she sees her role as someone who has the job of holding those in the public eye accountable to their policy. I feel this first hand towards the end of the interview where she turns the tables on me and starts to grill me about The Bachelor. Emma has a striking presence, and dwarfed me with her intelligence and speed of thought. It's clear that I've a long way to go in interviewing because Emma is clearly the master - I'm just a goofy student compared to her ability and insight. Emma is whip-smart, an intensely critical thinker, and stunningly beautiful - a true triple threat that left me mostly gobsmacked for our whole chat. I hope you enjoy this chat with on of the ABC's powerhouse minds - Emma Alberici.

06 May 2018233: Simon Hill01:31:36

Simon Hill is an entrepreneur and advocate for plant-based eating. Originally from Melbourne, he’s now based in Bondi Beach. You can find him on Instagram @plant_proof and online at plantproof.com - a guide to living a plant-based diet for people who like to be on the more active side of life.

Simon’s story is just remarkable.

He is one of Australia’s most successful young entrepreneurs, investors, and advisors.

As we talked he was very humble about his businesses - just casually dropping that he started a “tea company” while he was working as a physiotherapist.

The tea company he’s referring to is the absolutely massive YourTea.com, giving people access to herbs and teas used in traditional Chinese medicine.

But you’d never know he’s one of my country’s most successful entrepreneurs, he’s also one of the people behind Organic Village Foods and Bean Body Care.

Simon’s a very smart, very humble man.

Devastatingly handsome with eyes like turquoise tropical lagoons, Simon’s focus now is on advocating for a plant-based lifestyle.

If you look at a photo of him, you’ll notice that he is cut like a chopped salad.

The man works out.

And Plant Proof was inspired by Simon’s own experience with transitioning from eating animal foods to a plant-based diet.

As we discuss, initially he shared many common fears among men and women, who are doing the same thing.

If I stop eating meat am I going to lose muscle?

With all those carbs will I gain fat and feel bloated? What about my iron?

Will I get enough protein?

There are answers to all of these questions, and we talk about most of them in this show.

What I love most about Simon isn’t just his inspirational journey - but that he doesn’t throw health claims around willy nilly.

He only talks about stuff that is backed up by hard science. He won’t make a claim that isn’t backed by a reference to a peer-reviewed journal study.

And in this day of Instagram experts touting miracle cures - that is an important thing to have.

To add even more clout to what he’s talking about, Simon is currently studying a Masters in Nutrition so that he can come at anyone with cold hard facts at fifty paces.

He’s a great guy, I hope you enjoy getting to know Simon Hill.

Her podcast is called “Stand Out life” and can be heard wherever podcasts are - probably the same place you hear this one.

Jesse Israel is a Meditation Leader and founder of The Big Quiet - a movement that brings mass meditations to iconic spaces around the world.

He’s been on this podcast before, and I’m so damned happy to have him back to talk about his latest adventure.

As someone who does his best to meditate every day, it’s always great to hear from a professional that I should be finding it as hard as I’m finding it sometimes.

That in fact is the point.

I’ll let Jesse explain it more.

If you’ve heard about the science behind meditation and why it’s a good idea - this chat will hopefully get you over the line to get going on a daily practice.

We do talk a bit about bicycles as well, which is kinda fun.

If you like what you hear - you can find out more about Jesse on twitter @jesseisrael and thebigquiet.com

Jesse and I caught up over Skype from his home in NYC, enjoy this conversation with Jesse Israel.

09 Apr 2017176: Michael Ware01:27:29

Michael Ware is a legendary international war correspondent originally from Brisbane, Australia.

Through his career, Michael’s style has always been a first-person, front row seat to some of the most confronting and dangerous situations on this planet. From modern-day witch-hunting in Papua New Guinea, to profiles of deadly Mexican drug cartels, to going in to Afghanistan only weeks after 9/11 and being one of the few Western journalists to live full-time in Iraq during the war.

He was the Bureau Chief for Time Magazine in Baghdad before switching over to television for CNN, also in Baghdad.

Needless to say, Michael has seen the worst the world can dish up.

And during this conversation, he openly gives first-hand accounts of some of the things he’s witnessed during war.

This week you may have seen cruise missiles being launched from a US destroyer hundreds of kilometers from their targets in Syria. This is not the kind of war Michael has seen.

He talks about the fog, the horror, the gore and the death he has seen.

Not to sensationalize it - but to describe it, so that you and I may know what it is we’re asking for when our leaders decide to send troops into a country in our name.

So here’s a warning right up top. This discussion goes to some dark places. I’ll say right now, if you have any difficulty hearing what Michael talks about, please do call lifeline in Australia on 13 11 14 - or whatever 24hr counseling line is in your part of the world.

It’s a tough story to hear but it’s an important story to hear because if you’re listening to this, you won the genetic lottery. Whatever stars and planets aligned I don’t know - but you’re listening to this on an internet connected device somewhere in the world that is safe. And that is not how the majority of the world live.

Michael’s struggles with his demons are well documented, and when I first met him on a rooftop in NYC back in 2012 - he was very open about his PTSD. It was pretty obvious from his body language that I don’t press him on what caused it, but I’m grateful that five years later he and I were finally able to talk.

We met in a wonderful old hotel in Sydney, right in the middle of the city.

He was in town to talk about his new documentary series Uncensored, where he embeds himself into some of the most risky groups of people on the planet. From militant pro-Russian biker gangs, to the hill tribes on PNG, to the much-hated paparazzi of L.A., Michael brings a first-hand account of what he sees.

The show is in Australia on National Geographic and it’s bloody incredible.

Do what you need to see it.

We do talk about the first episode with the Russian Bikers, but don’t worry we won’t spoil it for you.

This is a heavy chat, but it’s important for you to hear.

I had a coffee beforehand, but you - like Michael, may need a drink as we go.

So hold on - because this is me and one of Australia’s finest, Michael Ware.

30 Jul 2017192: Brendan McClean01:22:54

Brendan Maclean is an Australian singer/songwriter/performer/unicorn who first came on this show about three years ago but suffered at the hands of the great file loss of 2015.

He has been kind enough to return and boy do we have a lot to talk about.

Brendan’s about to have a new EP come out in August 2017 and a new album in the works for early 2018 so a great time to have him on.

Find him on twitter and Insta for more @macleanbrendan.

This is a conversation for anyone who’s let fear hold them back from expressing themselves.

And expressing himself is something Brendan does with exceptional ability.

His live energy is something to behold - as is his recorded work which you can find at brendanmaclean.Bandcamp.com.

A fair amount of this conversation revolves around the music video that Brendan put out in the last few months - the video for the song House Of Air.

I must warn you with all the warnings I can warn you with.

If you choose to go and watch this video yourself you will see rather graphic depictions of many sex acts between two men.

You’ll see close up shots of genitals and you’ll even see penetration.

If you want to see such a thing, it’s up to you to watch it - I’m not going to say watch it or don’t. But if you do - be aware that you’ll see what you think you’re going to see when you hire professional gay porn actors to make a film in the style of a visual accompaniment to a written thesis observing the habits and cultures of a subset of gay men.

In this conversation you’ll hear me watch the video - which you can see at houseofair.info - and I try my best to give benign descriptions of what I’m seeing.

But again - only watch this video if you’re interested in seeing something that freaked a lot of people out.

I thought the video was great, it is so perfect, and really does what it sets out to do - I’m so happy that Brendan is the kind of guy to make this kind of film.

I know I certainly am not brave enough to create art like that - and I’m thrilled he was in my house and able to talk about it with me.

Having said that, Brendan got really raw about his adventures in the world of art and performing and it’s an honour that he chose to share these things with me.

I urge you to support Brendan in any way you can - financially or through spreading the word about his work.

We’re lucky to have him.

Let him know you heard him on online - handle is @macleanbrendan

Please enjoy this conversation with Brendan Maclean.

03 Jun 2018237: Guy Sebastian01:40:30

Guy Sebastian is a singer, songwriter and producer from Sydney, Australia.

He’s on instagram and twitter @guysebastian

The first winner of Australian Idol back in 2003, he and I have known each other for most of our careers.

We’ve had interviews along the way, at Channel [v] or on radio - but he and I have never spoken like we speak today.

Guy Sebastian has an incredible voice, and is a very, very successful recording artist in Australia because he works harder than almost anyone.

However along the way Guy has had his struggles, and in this conversation he and I unlock a massive catalyst for change that happened with Guy, and it only happened in the last 18 months.

To put it simply, daily physical exercise changed his life. I’ll let him take you through it, however the way he describes how hitting the gym every day has changed the way he works, thinks and feels, changed so many things outside of the gym - well, I related to it so much because that has been my experience too.

Guy is a very deep soul, a kind man, and a man who feels great empathy and love for his life and also those who enjoy his music.

He spent a few hours in my apartment and we could have chatted all afternoon, however I think in this one we really unlocked a few keys to what makes Guy Sebastian one of the greatest performers our country has ever seen.

He’s a complete inspiration to me, and I hope you get the same feeling when this conversation is over that I did. One of elation, and a desire to go and move my body.

Guy’s touring around the country in the next few weeks, tickets are available at guysebastian.com

Even if you’ve never seen him live, after hearing this I’m sure you’ll want to go just so you can spend time being in the same room as him, because hs’e a very special human.

Please enjoy this long-overdue conversation with Guy Sebastian.

You can book tickets for his upcoming tour http://www.guysebastian.com - if you liked the chat, please let him know on twitter or instagram.

Lola Berry is often called "Australia's favourite Nutritionist". She's a nutritionist, author, blogger, speaker and advocate for happiness. She even wrote a book about happiness. And five other books. You can buy them everywhere.  She's a woman who has inspired hundreds of thousands of people all around the world to be kinder and more caring to themselves through food and nourishment - not just of their bodies but of themselves as a whole. Lola has a beautiful, warm and glowing energy that swept into my home with a gift basket of vegan goodies under her arm and a smile that could make the clouds part. She smooshed my dog frankie and then we sat down for a frank, honest and wonderful conversation about taking risks, success, failure, food and persistence.  A trigger warning at the top here. Sexual assault is a part of Lola's story and she talks about that today. If you're at all triggered about such a topic - I completely understand. When you hear us talking about it, flick forward about seven minutes and you'll arrive safe on the other side with us talking about smoothies. Find Lola everywhere on your phone with the handle @yummololaberry - her snapchat is pretty great, I recommend it. So enjoy a deep, honest and nourishing chat with the wonderful Lola Berry.

18 Nov 2018261: Tahnee Schulz01:22:55

My guest today is Psychologist Tahnee Schulz.

Tahnee is a highly experienced psychologist with a background in mental health, trauma, substance use, complex co-morbid presentations and corporate psychology.

For the past four years, she has specialised in critical incident response and has worked with various people involved in and affected by the tragic passing of cricketer Phillip Hughes, the Sydney Lindt Café siege, several Royal Commissions and the Nepal Earthquakes Rescue Mission.

She’s essentially like the mental health paramedic, but instead of a medical kit full of butterfly stitches and IV drips, she has her words and knowledge to assist with the mental trauma of a situation with great physical trauma and danger.

This conversation talks a lot about trauma and the effects of trauma. Part of the chat takes us to a pretty grim place and about 1/2 hour in there’s a conversation about a case she worked on that involved a kid - if you want to skip ahead a few minutes I won’t be upset.

If this conversation does bring anything up for you please call lifeline 131114.

You’re going to get a lot out of this - I know I did.

Please enjoy this conversation with Tahnee Schulz.
