Welcome back and thanks for coming. Here is episode 72 of my little podcast and this episode's origins are a little different to the rest of the podcasts that I have done. I was reached out to by representatives of Kirt to see if I would be interested in talking to him for the show (something I was very flattered by, I never thought i’d get to that stage) and I of course jumped at the chance to speak to someone in his position. Kirt is the CEO of US based B2B sync platform ‘Syncfloor’. Syncfloor offers music users a simple way to access, find, search and license all sorts of music for their projects. Kirt has a background in tech (via Microsoft) as well as in music (as a performer but also as an indie label owner). It was a fascinating chat and Kirt was an amazing guest. Big thanks to Liam for jumping on a Zoom call with me to talk about all things live music (pre and post Pandemic). I reached out to Liam as he and his agency ‘Echelon Talent’ currently look after the live side of things for a couple of acts I work with as DC Music Publishing. The Hyena Kill and Blanket. Liams agency look after a whole host of acts based in the UK and beyond who I am a big fan of so it was great to speak to him about how he has built his business, especially during such a difficult time for the live music industry. Echelon was launching only 6 months before the global pandemic shut the live entertainment business down so it was really interesting to hear what that whole period was like. We also talked about how Liam and his business work with his clients and how he likes to start working with acts early in their careers. This is one of my all time favourite conversations. This episode, I chatted to the wonderful Jack Williamson about his journey through the music business and his current relationship with the industry as a coach, psychotherapist and mental health activist. During the chat we realised that our paths had crossed back in the day. Whilst I was the head of sync at peermusic in the UK Jack was co-manager of Gabrielle Aplin. We were keen to sign Gabrielle and Jack and I definitely spoke about all things creative at least once in one of our past lives. This conversation was an extra special one for me as I have grown up listening to many of the bands that Julie has been responsible for putting out into the world. For those out there who love their UK Heavy Metal from the late 90s/early 00s you will know of her work via Visible Noise, the indie label she started who discovered bands like Bring me the Horizon and Bullet for My Valentine (and deeper cuts who I love like Number One Son and Kilkus). Lucie is the General Manager and Chief Policy Officer of the Music Publishers Association (MPA). The MPA represents over 95% of the UK’s song rights, through its membership of over 200 music publishers, ranging from iconic Independents to the international Major Publishers. Prior to the MPA, Lucie was the CEO of performing artists’ collective, the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC). Lucie has over 17 years’ experience in the music business, including time at PRS for Music in digital licencing and within Indie music publishing companies. She also ran her own rights-management company, operating on both sides of the negotiating table for clients including Deezer, eMusic, Sony/SYCO and The BRIT Awards, amongst others. This episodes chat is with Mike Burgess. Mike has spent time in a number of different areas of the business. He has been a producer/remixer/creator as well as working in radio and in artist management and artist development. He has his own label and has worked with an interesting mix of varied performers an writers.
Mike has recently launched a new project Sound with Mike (see links below). The service is a creative consultancy where he offers his time and input into creative projects. He is also running assorted workshops and events in the Manchester area as well.

Recent projects that the Leland Originals roster have worked on includes: Tom Hodges co-score for McMafia for the BBC/Amazon and Benjamin Woodgates arrangement and orchestration of the live rescoring of Jonny Greenwood’s score to 'A Phantom Thread' for the European Film Premiere amongst many other things.
Gary's background is in music publishing and synchronisation. He spent time at Warner Chappell, Chrysalis Music, Music Sales and Caroline as well as running his own sync representation agency.

This episodes is a chat with Leon Alexander of Red Light Management. Leon is the co-founder of Hope Management (1998), an independent management company specialising in electronic artists, and since 2011, part of Red Light Management. Leon heads up the Bristol Red Light office and is responsible for creative development and management, co-leading projects and developing and partnering the artists. Current clients include Ry-x, Howling and The Acid, Martin Buttrich, Jens Kuross as well as long standing underground legend DJ Nick Warren with whom he also runs Hope Recordings.
I met Leon when I moved to Bristol in 2016 and he has been a constant source of knowledge and support since I have been here. He welcomed me into his home back in June of this year and we had a great chat about his career in Artist Management and in Bristol as well as what takes and means to be an artist manager in the current music business.

It's the end of February 2019 and here is a chat I had with the wonderful Dan Vinci in September 2018 for the Behind the Business Podcast.
I have known Dan for a number of years due to an assortment of mutual friends in Saaf London. He is a great chap and a solid football play. He can run for days. He invited me round to his flat in Brixton and we chatted about getting into the world of producing.
Dan has some really great insights (especially when it comes to the strategic use of Haribo in studio sessions to get the best out of the artist) and is generally a great person to sit down and talk to about music. Genuine passion is evident in everything he says.
We didn’t get the chance to talk about a number of really interesting projects he had at the time and some he has done between the record and now so hopefully i will be able to get him back on to chat about those (especially his work with Sir David Attenborough).

Benbrick is a multi-platinum selling and award-winning songwriter currently producing & composing on George The Poet’s podcast. Obsessed with technology; Benbrick advises on a number of start ups, as well as writing about emerging technology and blockchain. Inspired by Tim Ferriss’ book The 4-Hour Work week he designed an app to help him reach out to anyone. This led to Ricky Gervais calling him “a future genius” with “stunningly beautiful” music. Benbrick wrote the end credits theme to the Japanese Academy Award winning movie Evangelion 3.33. The single was included in the Japan Record Awards Album Of The Year which also charted at #1 on the US Billboard World Albums chart selling over 1 million copies.
We met up at the tail end of summer last year in his Studio in the Tileyard complex and we had an awesome chat about his career and how he goes about doing what he does. I had never met Paul before this meetup so an extra big thank you to him for getting involved in this project of mine so early on.
I hope to get him back on in the not too distant future to talk a bit more in detail about things like his charity work as well as the current podcast project he has with George the Poet.

This week's episode is a chat I had in my kitchen in Bristol with Gerard Phillips. Currently heading up operations at the recently formed music publishing arm of Young Turks. I have known Gerard for a while now since I was part of the team at peermusic publishing and he was heading up Songs Publishings UK office.
We talked about his start in the music business via record label A&R and his work throughout the early 00s with indie label Independente as well as his time at EMI before he migrated across to the world of music publishing.
It was a fun conversation and Gerard is always really open and honest about this stuff and a great guy to chat to about all things A&R and music publishing.

I met up with Bibes a long old time ago now. Over a year in fact, so the conversation is very much about his journey to where he is now. I’m going to get him back on in Series 2 in order to discuss in more detail some of the more specific stuff that he has been up to recently, especially the tour management that he does. Hello and here we are at episode 22 of my behind the MUSIC business podcast. This week is a conversation with Music Supervisor and all round music in media Guru Ru Hollier. I met with Ru last year in the Hospital Club in London for a chat about all things sync and music in film and it was a really interesting chat.
I know Ru from his time at Imagem Music (Now Concord Music) but last year he set up this new business ‘Redfive’ and things have been going from strength to strength ever since.
Since the interview, Redfive Creative has supervised numerous films, including the Oscar-nominated Glenn Close film “The Wife” and the double Bafta-nominated feature doc “McQueen”, scored by Michael Nyman. Current projects include the new Ron Perlman western “Hell on the Border”, a new feature documentary on the GTA franchise, and the new Michael Winterbottom film.
Their new VR installation project with Conservation International and Phillipe Cousteau is set to premiere at Tribeca later this month, featuring bespoke music from an electronic scene giant (watch this space..) Redfive now has a JV with the Atlantic Screen Group, plugging directly into their score funding model and helping advise and audit music fulfilment budgets.
With their 2019 slate set to reach over double figures, the team also has vast expansion plans for the near future, with eyes on furthering their wider production roles and movement into the original content space with the inception of Redfive Films.

Cam’s successful channel (https://www.youtube.com/cameroncooper) which as of time of writing has 25,000 subscribers (worldwide) and is growing rapidly graduated from BIMM Manchester with a First Class Degree in Music Business. He specialises in reviewing guitars, amps and effects as well as teaching advanced guitar playing techniques. He has recently become an influencer marketer for Fender Specialty Brands which include EVH, Jackson, Charvel and Gretsch. He's also signed a deal with Elixir strings and is due to be starting work with Yamaha later this year. His YouTube channel has gotten him connections with loads of artists in the Rock community and was fortunate enough to jam with Gus G (Ozzy Osbourne), Steel Panther as well as converse with other artists such as Steve Vai, Angel Vivaldi, Plini and Andy James.

Steve and I work together at a Bimm Bristol, in fact we both joined the business in the same year.
