21 Mar 2022Matt Allen 'The Famous Company' (PR, Artist Development, working with new music, Cornwall and the UK South West)00:59:15

This weeks conversation for the podcast is with Matt Allen. Account Director at The Famous Company (@thefamousco) and Company Director of podcast Agency Digital Bulls (@goteampod). I had the pleasure of being interviews for the Famous Music companies podcast last year and Matt very gladly returned the favour and jumped on a call with me to talk all things music, Bristol and Cornwall (amongst other things).

I really enjoyed this one. I had only ever spoken to Matt via email before we had the chat and it was a total joy to do. He is full of interesting insights and opinions on running a business in the creative industries and where things are going moving forward as well.

Hopefully I will get to work with Matt and his team on projects moving forward but for now enjoy our conversation.

18 Apr 2022Dean Marsh 'Creative Law and Business' (Music and entertainment industry law)00:55:09

We’re into April 2022 and this is episode 72 of the pod. It’s a conversation with music industry lawyer Dean Marsh. Dean is based in Brighton and runs a company called Creative Law and Business.

I first knew of Dean waaaay back in 2003 in my first music business job and since then he has worked with many individuals and businesses that I have done work for and with.

He is a fountain of knowledge about the business and the legal side of it and it was a real pleasure to talk to him about the role of a lawyer in the modern music business, Some of the specific work that he has done through the years, his time as a litigator and his early adoption and championing of the now flourishing DIY aspect of the modern music business.

I really appreciate Dean finding the time to speak to me as, like most lawyers, its a hugely busy person. If you would like to know more about his company then check out the links below.

08 Jun 2021Charlotte Hatherley (Composer/Guitarist)01:03:42

As we enter into the summer of 2021 I have the privilege to release this great chat with guitarist and composer Charlotte Hatherley. This episode was a long time in the making as our chat was originally scheduled for April 2020 but due to all thing global pandemic it was pushed back to earlier this year.

You might know Charlotte from her time in Ash in the late 90s and early 2000s, or from her time as touring guitar player for acts such as KT Tunstall and Bat for Lashes. You might also know here for all the solo records she has put out independently as well as her more recent work composing film scores. We talk about it all as well as spend some time discussion the current state of women in the music business.

It was an amazing opportunity to speak to her, I can’t thank her enough for giving me the time to have this conversation. I hope you like listening to it.

06 Jun 2022Deborah Smith 'Anara Music Publishing' (Music Publishing)01:01:00

I’m back for part 2 of the podcasts for 2022. This first episodes is a cracking chat about music publishing with Deborah Smith who is the Director at Anara Music Publishing based in Leicester in the UK.

I reached out to Deborah online as I had never met her and managed to find a window of time in her busy schedule (Anara do a lot of work over in India which Deborah has been getting involved with now that travel is that much easier again) and the conversation was about her start in music and how to set up a publishing company from scratch.

As someone currently in the process of setting up a music publishing business it was a very informative chat.

18 Jul 2022Liva Cruz 'A&G/Power-Haus Creative (A&R, Music Publishing, Sync)00:52:02

As I hurtle (slowly) closer to episode 80, this weeks conversation is with Head of Publishing, A&R and Label Manager at A&G Group/Power Haus Creative Livia Cruz. I reached out to Livia via Linkedin as she is another guest of the pod that I am yet to meet in person. I was very pleased that she was able to jump on a Zpom call with me at short notice to have this conversation.

We spoke about her relationship with music having grown up in Brazil and how she got into the business over here when she came over to Europe. Liv also gave me a really interesting look into what A&G as a business are doing at the moment, especially with the relatively recent addition of Power-Haus on the master recording side of the business.

I really enjoyed meeting and speaking with Liv and I hope you enjoying listening to our conversation.

26 Apr 2021Claire Rose (PRS for Music 00:53:43

Claire Rose is the outreach manager for the South West region for PRS for Music. She is an amazing asset to have (as are all the outreach managers across the UK who help out new PRS members as well as those who are thinking about joining).

We spoke over Zoom (like we all do at time for recording) and chatted about her role, the PRS in general, what new songwriters should be doing and where things are going in the future.

20 Sep 2021Dee Adam 'Songwriter/Producer' (Professional Songwriting, Collaborating in Lockdown, Relationships with publishers)01:03:29

This week's episode is a conversation about songwriting with professional songwriter Dee Adam. I know Dee from our time together at peermusic and I am immensely grateful that she found the time in her schedule to talk to me. I always like talking to songwriters about how they do their thing.

Dee herself is a writer and producer who has worked with a whole host of household names including Dido, Mel C and The Kaiser Chiefs to name a few. Following a run of success in 2019 and 2020, 2021 and beyond will see more releases with names such as Jack Wins, Nonõ, Lo Steppa, iiola and Flux Pavilion.

28 Mar 2022Kirt Debique 'Syncfloor' (Sync, tech startups, sourcing funding)00:55:08

Welcome back and thanks for coming. Here is episode 72 of my little podcast and this episode's origins are a little different to the rest of the podcasts that I have done. I was reached out to by representatives of Kirt to see if I would be interested in talking to him for the show (something I was very flattered by, I never thought i’d get to that stage) and I of course jumped at the chance to speak to someone in his position. Kirt is the CEO of US based B2B sync platform ‘Syncfloor’. Syncfloor offers music users a simple way to access, find, search and license all sorts of music for their projects. Kirt has a background in tech (via Microsoft) as well as in music (as a performer but also as an indie label owner). It was a fascinating chat and Kirt was an amazing guest. Not going to lie I was nervous before starting this one but he was a joy to chat to and I’d love to have the chance to chat to him again in the not too distant future. 26 Jul 2022Liam Spencer 'Echelon Talent Agency' (Booking Agents, Live Music, UK rock and metal)01:02:38

Big thanks to Liam for jumping on a Zoom call with me to talk about all things live music (pre and post Pandemic). I reached out to Liam as he and his agency ‘Echelon Talent’ currently look after the live side of things for a couple of acts I work with as DC Music Publishing. The Hyena Kill and Blanket.

Liams agency look after a whole host of acts based in the UK and beyond who I am a big fan of so it was great to speak to him about how he has built his business, especially during such a difficult time for the live music industry.

Echelon was launching only 6 months before the global pandemic shut the live entertainment business down so it was really interesting to hear what that whole period was like. We also talked about how Liam and his business work with his clients and how he likes to start working with acts early in their careers.

It was a great conversation, we shared a lot of similar views and I am sure that we could have carried on talking for ages if given the chance.

15 Apr 2022George Lever 'G1 Productions' (Audio engineering, mixing, mastering and production)01:02:00

Here is another conversation with someone doing great things in the world of metal and heavy music in the UK. I reached out to George via Instagram on the off chance he would be interested in speaking to me as I am a fan of the work he has done with bands including: Monuments, Loathe and Sleep Token as well as newer acts who I have discovered via diving further into his work like Kubrick and Graphic Nature.

It was an interesting and insightful conversation. George is a very open and honest person who operates in a world I only have a small working relationship with (those who operate in and around the record process) so it was great to dive into this area more and get his personal points of view on many things.

I’ll be keeping a very close eye on new work from George and if you like some of the bands I have mentioned you should too. Spotify playlist link below

13 Jun 2022Jack Williamson 'Music and You' (Music Management, Marketing, Mental Health and Coaching)00:59:27

This is one of my all time favourite conversations. This episode, I chatted to the wonderful Jack Williamson about his journey through the music business and his current relationship with the industry as a coach, psychotherapist and mental health activist.

During the chat we realised that our paths had crossed back in the day. Whilst I was the head of sync at peermusic in the UK Jack was co-manager of Gabrielle Aplin. We were keen to sign Gabrielle and Jack and I definitely spoke about all things creative at least once in one of our past lives.

This conversation though was really uplifting and inspiring to me to hear Jacks outlook on life, how he motivates himself to move forward, how he carved out his own path through the industry and how he is currently ticking items of his ‘fuck it’ list.

It’s a great chat. I hope you enjoy it to.

22 Aug 2022Emily Ardagh-Walter 'This is Music' (Management, Internships, starting in the music business, Music business degrees)00:59:28

Very excited about getting ever closer to episode 80 of the podcast which is mad when I think about it. Episode 79 is with Emily Ardagh-Walter of This is Music. Emily recently moved into the world of artist management after leaving her breakthrough role as part of the finance team at Universal Records.

I had the pleasure of teaching Emily in my first year of university lecturing at the University of South Wales in Cardiff and it would an absolute treat to catch up with her to hear about her journey since graduating in 2019.

We spoke about Music business courses at uni, about internships and how to make the most out of them and how she made the decision to move on from that first role at a major to what she is doing now.

This episode is definitely a good one for those of you out there interesting in making your first steps into the music business either before or after a degree.

04 Jul 2022Vikrum Gudi 'Elephant Music' (Business ownership, Music for film, Music Publishing)01:02:03

Episode 75 of my little podcast!!!! Three quarters of the way to the big 100. Thanks to everyone who listens and shares these episodes. It really means a lot.

This episode has been a long time in the making. My guest for this episode, Vikrum Gudi, is an incredibly busy man. He currently runs a number of different businesses that we spoke about when we finally managed to find time in both of our schedules that worked. Elephant Music is a music production company that focuses on the world of sync, Split Music is a sync focused music publishing business, Protege School is an online based education facility that focuses on working with songwriters and producers for the world of making music for media and Mmmoth Beer is a London based micro brewery. As I mentioned, Vik is a busy guy.

We spoke about all of these businesses and a whole lot more as well including how he got into the business and how the pandemic impacted his ‘empire’ (both positively and negatively). It was an awesome chat and I hope you enjoy listening to it.

10 May 2021Marc Brown (Byta)00:54:19

Marc Brown and his team reached out to me last year and very kindly asked me to feature in their ‘How we listen’ feature (link below) and it was great having him on the pod as a guest to return the favour.

Marc’s career has taken him across many countries and through a number of interesting roles starting in PR and promotion and now he is firmly focused on all things digital and his start up Byta is doing some really interesting things that make the lives of small indie labels and publishers much much easier.

06 Sep 2021Ellie Giles (Step Music Management)01:00:19

Here is one of my favourite of all the episodes that I have done of this podcast. A chat with artist and producer manager Ellie Giles.

Ellie has had an amazing career in A&R and management for the best part of 20 years and set up her company Step Management in 2018.
This was an amazing chat about the creative side of the business, about A&R in general and as a female in the industry and Ellie was amazingly honest and candid about how she operates and what she looks for in the business.

Check out all her links below to find out more about her roster and do make sure to listen to Erland Coopers releases from this year, they are incredible.

23 Feb 2022Remi Harris MBE 'Consultant/Coach' (Associatation of Independent Music, UK Music, Music Business Consultancy, funding, Young guns network)01:01:14

Episode 2 for 2022. Sorry it’s a bit late. At time of release its Half term so I’m going to have to be that guy and blame my children (how awful is that…)

Anyway, this episode is a very special one as its a conversation that I have wanted to have for some time. Remi Harris MBE is a business consultant and business coach who has and does work with a huge range of people in and around the music business.

Remi has held really interesting position in organisations such as the Association of Independent music (AIM) and UK Music before she set up her own business doing what she does now.

It was amazing to meet and speak with Remi, learn her story of her journey through the industry and how she has developed and shaped her own path. Also, its also a big deal to speak to someone with an MBE.

02 Aug 2021Graham Jackson (Musicians Union)00:56:05

The big 6-0. 60 episodes and counting. To some that probably means very little but I’m pretty proud that I have got here all on my own.
This episode is with yet another Uni of Hertfordshire alumni. Graham was part of the group that I was involved with at Uni. We had a wonderful time and have remained firm friends 10+ years on from when we graduated.
Graham is now one of the regional Officers (for London) at the Musicians Union. So if you are based around the capital and have an issue and are a member then he will be your go to guy.
It was great to talk to him about the amazing work that the MU does, especially during this rather taxing times for musicians. As well as talking to him about his journey to where he is and what got him here.
I hope you enjoy it.

29 Aug 2022Russ Tannen 'DICE' (Live Music, Promotions, Moving to the USA)01:05:42

Here we are. Episode 80 of this little podcast that I launched back in 2018. Since then I have spoken to music business execs from the world of record labels, publishing, artist management, sync, artists themselves and also live music which is where my very special guest number 80 comes from.

Russ Tannen is the president of DICE. At their core DICE is a ticketing business but as you will hear from our conversation they have become so much more than that and are continuing to grow and develop in really interesting ways.

Russ is based in NYC and we met up over a video call and talked about his journey from a 15 year old Hardcore kid from the Isle of White putting on shows in his local pub that he couldnt even attend because he was too young to being the president of a multinational live music business with 460 employees worldwide.

I had a lot of fun talking to Russ and hearing how much we had in common growing up when it comes to music. Please forgive the alarm that you might be able to hear in the background. There was a test going on at the DICE building whilst we spoke.

12 Apr 2021Chantal Epp (Click n Clear)00:55:17

After a ridiculous break, a few false starts, a change of location (I moved house), an addition to my family (I welcomed a daughter into the world) and nearly deciding to stop doing the pod altogether I am back and there will be new episodes every two weeks (hopefully) this year.

Episode 1 of 2021 is with the fantastic Chantal Epp. Founder of music clearance company @Clicknclear. Chantal is an amazingly driven individual who has thrived on starting multiple businesses around her two loves of music and performance sports.

It was an amazing conversation with her chatting about her journey in music, how it felt to be part of companies not doing so well and also starting up her own businesses (something that can be very daunting).

11 Oct 2021Max Odell 'Max Music Publishing' (Indie Music Publishing)00:56:06

Welcome back and here is the final Behind the Music Business Podcast of 2021. I am going to take a break for the rest of the year from releasing episodes but I am hoping to come back in 2022 with brand new conversations with some amazing music industry professionals.

To round things off for 2021 and for my 65th episode I have the founder and CEO of UK based independent music publisher Max Music Publishing Max Odell as my guest this week. We talked about all things music publishing and the specifics behind the ethos that he has taken into his company since he launched it 4 years ago.

I found this chat very inspiring as I am currently taking a similar plunge into the world of music publishing at this very moment as Max did back in 2017 so it was really interesting and informative hearing how and why he did what he has done and how well he has done it.

Here is another chat about all things music publishing and sync for your ear holes. I know James from way back in 2009 when he first joined Sony Music Publishing and he was there through till 2020 (including the EMI buyout) when he left to set up his own thing ‘Rocket Science Music’.

It was great to catch up with James and find out his motivations for leaving the role at the largest music publisher on the planet to go at it alone and what its like as a freelancer/business owner in the world that he operates in at the moment. Links to his stuff below.

Here is yet another wonderful Uni of Hertfordshire alumni for you. Emma is an amazing music and brand partnerships lawyer who has spent time both in house at Universal records as well as part of law firm SSB working on behalf of the talent rather than the companies who sign the talent.

It’s always lovely to chat to Emma. She is open, honest and full of information about her profession and she is so passionate about it as well which is always a great thing.

We talked about her journey to becoming a lawyer, the day to day of a lawyer in music and her specific take on the profession as well. So if you are interested in seeking a career in music law this is the episode for you.

06 Jul 2021Sergio Pimental (Owner/Creative Director Synchronicity)01:10:56

It’s already July 2021!!! Doesn’t time fly when you’re in a pandemic. This weeks conversation, like last week, focuses on the world of sync. However this time around from a slightly different point of view.
Sergio Pimental has worked around music and computer games for as long as I have known him and it would great chatting with him and finding more about this area of the business and his journey through it.

We talk about his beginnings and his time at Sony Games and Activision as well as his foray away from games when he joined the team and Big Sync Music (music supervision company owned by Unilever) and Ninja Tunes and a little bit about his side business as a personal trainer.

His new company Synchronicity is just being launched so look out for links to be added as soon as they are available.

It was a long time in the making this chat, I hope you enjoy it.

04 Apr 2022Julie Weir 'Music of Nations' (A&R, artist development, running a record label, uk alternaive music)00:59:57

This conversation was an extra special one for me as I have grown up listening to many of the bands that Julie has been responsible for putting out into the world. For those out there who love their UK Heavy Metal from the late 90s/early 00s you will know of her work via Visible Noise, the indie label she started who discovered bands like Bring me the Horizon and Bullet for My Valentine (and deeper cuts who I love like Number One Son and Kilkus). Now she is the label head of Sony Music’s rock and metal label Music For Nations.

We spoke about how she started in music, coming from the North of England and making her way in the music business, setting up Visible Noise and the work she is doing with Music for Nations and how things differ now that she is working with a Major (spoiler alert, it’s great).

She’s currently working with some of my favourite acts out there that you should check out. From Global giants Tool (my all time number 1 band) through to newer/lesser known UK acts like Blanket and Witch Fever (who we discuss at length in the episode, they are awesome).

I hope you enjoy the chat as much as I did having it.

This episode is with a fellow podcaster. If you haven’t checked out the MeloCompass podcast already you definitely should. If you are listening to this then Nicky’s pod will be right up your street. Check it out on Spotify, Apple, Google or wherever you get your podcasts from.

Nicky has had a varied career in the business and has loads of insights for those who are interested in getting in the business. Her area of specialism is music licensing so we have a good and thorough discussion on that and where its all going in the future as well as chatting about Nicky's personal journey in the business and the specific places she has worked as well as the MeloCompass project that she has been building for the past few years.

Episode 7 of my Behind the business podcast where I talk to people from all areas of the music business about their day to day jobs as well as how they got to where they were. An independent marketing firm that Olivia set up a few years ago after leaving her position at Fiction records (part of Universal). Olivia had spent a number of years as part of the Universal family in roles for Fiction and Polydor and she very kindly made time for me to meet with her in a busy and very sunny Brixton back in June 2018. There is a bit of background noise to this one as we were in a busy café for our chat and watch out for some swearing as well. We talked about how she got to where she is now. Whats its like to start up your own business and what she thinks about the current climate in the music business in the UK along with much more. Olivia is great to chat to. Very open and honest and full of enthusiasm and passion for what she does. 19 Nov 2018Skip Curtis (Artist, Producer, Songwriter - XY&O)00:54:51
Welcome to the Behind the Business podcast. A new music business focused podcast where I chat with an eclectic mix of people from the music business about them, what they do and why they do it. Episode 8 is my first chat with some on the Artist side of things in the Music Business. Skip Curtis, singer and 1/3 of the songwriting for Cardiff based band XY&O. I know Skip from my role as a uni lecturer in both Bristol and Cardiff as Skip also dabbles in this area making sure those coming up and looking at a career in the business get to share in the wisdom that he has gained from being in it. I sat down with Skip at the beginning of August of 2018 for an open and candid chat about how XY&O came to be. What their success has looked like and what things look like moving forward for him and the group. It was a really interesting chat and Skip has some great insight into the business from the other side of things. You can listen to XY&O on all the usual platforms. 26 Nov 2018Sam Broadbent (StereoHype Management & Black Cacti Publishing startup)00:50:53
Oh hi again. Here we are at Episode 9 of Behind the Business. The UK music business podcast where I pick the brains of an eclectic mix of those in all areas of the music business about what they do and why they do it. This episode is with Sam Broadbent. Recent Uni graduate and founder of Steroehype management (https://www.facebook.com/StereoHypeManagement) and Black Cacti Music Publishing (https://www.facebook.com/BlackCactiMCR/) . Sam was actually a student of mine during my first full year of teaching and we sat down to talk about his views on education having just finished his time in it as well as the trials and tribulations of someone working tirelessly to make a name for themselves in the creative industries. I was especially keen to find out what life is like as a new business owner. Between recording and releasing this episode the band that Sam speaks about decided to call it a day. Something that all too many artist managers working with developing bands have to deal with. I am hoping to get Sam back on to talk about managing that side of things. Until then enjoy this episode. https://www.facebook.com/StereoHypeManagement https://www.facebook.com/BlackCactiMCR/ Email to show at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com (mailto:behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com)   Follow the show on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/

08 Jan 2019Ann Harrison (Music Law - SSB Solicitors)00:56:20
Welcome back. I took a break over Christmas and new year in order to sort out the many many episodes still to come in this first series of the Behind the Business podcast and have still managed to leave it all till the last minute to finalise.  Episode 11 is a special one for me. It is a conversation I had back in September 2018 will Ann Harrison of SSB solicitors. As I mention in the pod Ann literally wrote the book on the music business in the UK. Her Book Music: The Business is now in its 7th edition and is available from all the usual places. I would recommend that anyone in the business or wanting to get in the business get themselves a copy of it. It’s a very useful thing to have on your shelf. I have listed a link to its page on Amazon below. It was amazing that Ann agreed to be featured in the first series of this podcast and if I’m lucky she might come back on in the future as there is so much more to talk with her about. I get the privilege of working with Ann whilst I was at peermusic. It’s a very weird thing to be working with someone who wrote a textbook that helped you get through university. BIY People & Talent works with a range of music business clients providing HR, People Development, Recruitment and Talent support and advice, as well as working closely with individuals looking to develop their careers.  Silvia is doing some amazing work with the up and comers in the music business. 22 Jan 2019Steve Marsden (Session Guitarist and songwriter)00:46:19
EPISODE 13 (my lucky number) IS HERE and it’s with songwriter and session guitar player Steve Marsden. I met Steve when I joined the team at BIMM in Manchester as one of the many hats that Steve wears is that of guitar and songwriter tutor. Something that I hope to get him back on to talk about in more detail in the future. Steve’s been working as a session guitar-player in all areas of live work, such as touring, fly-dates, TV performances and one-off shows, for over a decade... After an early breakthrough in to the music industry with the band No Hope In New Jersey, who released their debut album on Atlantic Records, Steve's versatility as a guitar-player and musician has enabled him to work with artists, musicians and producers across various musical genres... Steve's also a songwriter, vocal-topline writer and music producer, working with DJ's, singer-songwriters and commercial production studios... Steve was also the very view interviewee that I had for the pod. Steve was the pioneer who paved the way for me to chat with all the other wonderful people that have been kind enough to get involved in this first series and I will be forever thankful for that. http://www.stevenamarsden.com/ https://www.instagram.com/stevenamarsden/ https://twitter.com/stevenamarsden Email to show at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com (mailto:behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com)   Follow the show on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/
29 Jan 2019Matt Riley (VP A&R at AWAL)00:55:27
Welcome to episode 14 of the Behind the Business podcast. My new music business focused podcast where I chat with an assorted mix of people from all over the UK music business. This week’s chat is with VP of A&R for AWAL Matt Riley. Matt’s story is one of self determination, quiet confidence and drive and this has helped him get to the top of the game at one of the most exciting and forward thinking music companies in operation at the moment. Massive thanks to Matt for having me round for a chat at the new(ish) Kobalt offices and showing me the ridiculous roof terrace garden they have there. Even though was a full day early for the conversation (tip for those of you looking at making your way into any business, make sure to manage your diary closely). Matt talked me through his journey to where he is now and also went through some of the finer points of modern A&R in a business like AWAL. It was a great chat. https://twitter.com/ratmiley  https://www.awal.com/  Email to show at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com  Follow the show on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/
05 Feb 2019Jen Moss (Sync and Music supervision for film via Warner Music Supervision)00:53:19
Technically we have arrived at the halfway point of this first series of the Behind the business podcast. The aim is for 30 chats per series but the wonderful thing about podcasts is that the only person I answer to about that is me. So watch out, there could be less than 30 or there could be more...who knows (well, I do). This weeks chat is with Jen Moss. Jen is currently a music supervisor working in house at Warner Records. Some of her recent credits include: Prevenge (Alice Lowe), I, Tonya (Margo Robbie) and American Animals (Evan Peters). Check her out on IMDB for her full list of credits. Jen and I talked about all things sync. I met Jen when she was part of the traditional sync team at Warner Records before she made the jump to being a film music supervisor full time. This was also around the time that she was making short Horror films (one of which ‘My Brothers Keeper’) I saw play at the 2012 Frightfest Movie festival. Thanks to Jen for having me, I hope to have her back to talk about the specifics of some of the films she has worked on in more detail. Its also Jen's Birthday (on the day of release so a huge happy birthday to her). https://twitter.com/JenMossHaHa Email to show at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com (mailto:behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com) Follow the show on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/
12 Feb 2019Flash Taylor (Publishing A&R at Bucks Music Group)00:53:57
Hello again to you all and a very happy mid February if you are listening the week of release and a less happy (insert future date here) if you are listening in the future. How are the robots treating us in the post apocalyptic wasteland we call home? This week’s podcast is with publishing A&R man Flash Taylor. Currently working with UK indie publisher Bucks music but I first met Flash whilst working at SonyATV. We met last summer in his East London flat and had a lovely chat and a catch up about all things music and music publishing specifically. He also happens to be a founder of the most awesome of awesome UK club nights Ultimate Power. The best night out you will ever have. I’ve been loads of times, it’s fantastic, if you like power ballads (or even if you don’t) I urge you to check it out. Flash is one of my favourite people I have met in the industry. Always up for talking about music, finding out about new music especially and, if you’re like me, will never shy away from a chat about comic books either. If you’re interested in finding out more about the life or an A&R man and more specifically one who works in music publishing and with songwriters then this is the podcast for you. So sit back and enjoy the conversation. http://www.bucksmusicgroup.com/ https://twitter.com/flashieboy https://twitter.com/ultimatepower https://www.ultimatepowerclub.com/ Email to show at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com (mailto:behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com)   Follow the show on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/
19 Feb 2019Andy Rea (Events and PR - Redtarn, 2000 Trees festival)00:52:30
Welcome back to the Behind the business podcast. The UK music business podcast where I chat with a eclectic mix of music industry professionals about themselves, what they do and their motivations for doing it as well as a host of other stuff in between. This episodes conversation is with Events expert and co-founder of the 2000 Trees Music Festival Andy Rea. We sat down a few months before the 2018 editions of the music festival to talk all things live music and events. He let me in on some of the things that were going to be happening at 2018's 'Trees' Festival as well as what else he is up to outside of the festival. As the chat was before last years festivals I did manage to pin him down more recently to get his musings and reflections of last years even so look out for that extra bit at the end of the episode. Live Music is definitely the area of the business I personally have the least direct experience of so its always really great to sit down with someone who is properly involved in it.  Thanks for your continued interest into my little podcast. Make sure you let others who you think will enjoy the content know about it. Word of mouth is always important here.  Please get in touch with the show to ask questions to me or any of my guests behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com and follow the show on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod. Untill next time.
26 Feb 2019Dan Vinci (Producer - Big Narstie, Sir David Attenborough, Laura Wright, Johny Dar)01:00:58
It's the end of February 2019 and here is a chat I had with the wonderful Dan Vinci in September 2018 for the Behind the Business Podcast. I have known Dan for a number of years due to an assortment of mutual friends in Saaf London. He is a great chap and a solid football play. He can run for days. He invited me round to his flat in Brixton and we chatted about getting into the world of producing. Dan has some really great insights (especially when it comes to the strategic use of Haribo in studio sessions to get the best out of the artist) and is generally a great person to sit down and talk to about music. Genuine passion is evident in everything he says. We didn’t get the chance to talk about a number of really interesting projects he had at the time and some he has done between the record and now so hopefully i will be able to get him back on to chat about those (especially his work with Sir David Attenborough). Regular listeners will also notice some of the music has been altered. Dan was more than just an interview, he also offered up some small choice cuts of his catalogue for his episode. As with all my guest massive thanks to them for getting involved. It has really meant a lot to me. If you are interested in reaching out to dan or any of the guests from this series of the podcast please do get in touch with me using the email listed below. Check out dan via his website and The Dandadda project as well, also listed below. 05 Mar 2019Paul Carter AKA Benbrick (Artist, Composer, Arranger, Producer)00:53:04
Thanks for coming back to EPISODE 19!!!! Of my music business podcast ‘Behind the Business’. This weeks is a corker and its with artist, producer and songwriter ‘Paul Carter AKA Benbrick’. Benbrick is a multi-platinum selling and award-winning songwriter currently producing & composing on George The Poet’s podcast. Obsessed with technology; Benbrick advises on a number of start ups, as well as writing about emerging technology and blockchain. Inspired by Tim Ferriss’ book The 4-Hour Work week he designed an app to help him reach out to anyone. This led to Ricky Gervais calling him “a future genius” with “stunningly beautiful” music. Benbrick wrote the end credits theme to the Japanese Academy Award winning movie Evangelion 3.33. The single was included in the Japan Record Awards Album Of The Year which also charted at #1 on the US Billboard World Albums chart selling over 1 million copies. We met up at the tail end of summer last year in his Studio in the Tileyard complex and we had an awesome chat about his career and how he goes about doing what he does. I had never met Paul before this meetup so an extra big thank you to him for getting involved in this project of mine so early on. I hope to get him back on in the not too distant future to talk a bit more in detail about things like his charity work as well as the current podcast project he has with George the Poet. 12 Mar 2019Gerard Phillips (Young Turks Music Publishing)00:56:39
Bloody hell this is episode 20 of my Behind the (music) business podcast where I sit down with an assortment of people from all areas of the UK music Industry to find out what they do and what makes them tick. Still a few more to come from this first wave of episodes but there might be a short break between this and episode 21 (just a heads ups). This week's episode is a chat I had in my kitchen in Bristol with Gerard Phillips. Currently heading up operations at the recently formed music publishing arm of Young Turks. I have known Gerard for a while now since I was part of the team at peermusic publishing and he was heading up Songs Publishings UK office. We talked about his start in the music business via record label A&R and his work throughout the early 00s with indie label Independente as well as his time at EMI before he migrated across to the world of music publishing. It was a fun conversation and Gerard is always really open and honest about this stuff and a great guy to chat to about all things A&R and music publishing. As with the other 19 guests that I have had on so far, a MASSIVE thank you to Gerard for giving me the time to sit down and chat. It means a great deal that they have got involved in this little project I have started. Long may it continue. Well hello there, we meet again. Welcome back to the Behind the Business podcast where I sit down with an assortment of people from all areas of the UK music Industry to find out what they do and what makes them tick. We now at episode 21...Citing. This week's Chat is with my good friend Andy Bibey. Bibes and I went to Uni together (Uni of Hertfordshire if you were wondering) and studied Music and Entertainment Industry Management. Over a year in fact, so the conversation is very much about his journey to where he is now. I’m going to get him back on in Series 2 in order to discuss in more detail some of the more specific stuff that he has been up to recently, especially the tour management that he does. In this chat you’ll get some insight into his time in the live business and also the time he spent at One Little Indian though and he has some really great insights about the realities of getting in the music business in 2019 and beyond. 16 Apr 2019Rupert Hollier (Music Supervisor Redfive Creative)00:54:12
Hello and here we are at episode 22 of my behind the MUSIC business podcast. This week is a conversation with Music Supervisor and all round music in media Guru Ru Hollier. I met with Ru last year in the Hospital Club in London for a chat about all things sync and music in film and it was a really interesting chat. I know Ru from his time at Imagem Music (Now Concord Music) but last year he set up this new business ‘Redfive’ and things have been going from strength to strength ever since.  Since the interview, Redfive Creative has supervised numerous films, including the Oscar-nominated Glenn Close film “The Wife” and the double Bafta-nominated feature doc “McQueen”, scored by Michael Nyman. Current projects include the new Ron Perlman western “Hell on the Border”, a new feature documentary on the GTA franchise, and the new Michael Winterbottom film.  Their new VR installation project with Conservation International and Phillipe Cousteau is set to premiere at Tribeca later this month, featuring bespoke music from an electronic scene giant (watch this space..) Redfive now has a JV with the Atlantic Screen Group, plugging directly into their score funding model and helping advise and audit music fulfilment budgets. With their 2019 slate set to reach over double figures, the team also has vast expansion plans for the near future, with eyes on furthering their wider production roles and movement into the original content space with the inception of Redfive Films.  Find Red Five at http://www.red-fivecreative.com or on Instagram at www.instagram.com/redfive_creative (https://www.instagram.com/redfive_creative/.)  and Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/redfivecreativeagency As always thanks again for checking out my little podcast, it means a great deal that you do. Hello again and thanks for returning for podcast #24. This time with lead vocalist of Thousand Yard Stare and freelance artist manager, marketing expert and lecturer Steve Barnes. Steve and I work together at a Bimm Bristol, in fact we both joined the business in the same year. We sat down for a chat in the Waterfront cafe in Bristol at the end of last summer to discuss Steves start in music and get some of his thoughts on the parallels between being in a band in the early 90s and today now that Steve works with a lot of creatives at the start of their own journeys now. I am definitely going to get Steve back to talk more about ‘getting the band back together’ as well as some of the really interesting work he has done over in mainland Europe and further a field. But for now I hope you enjoy this chat. 09 Oct 2019Dot Allison (Songwriter & Artist)00:43:42
Episode 10 of the Podcast. Talking to Songwriter and performer Dot Allison about her career in music. This was a really interesting chat as Dot is another contributor to the pod who I had not met before we got to talk. It was over skype and I have to admit, I had technical issues my end but we managed it and it was an awesome chat about songwriting. Dot has some great insights about writing as an artist and also writing for and with other artists and about some of the things that all emerging and emerged songwriters should keep in mind when forging a path through the industry. Episode 11 is all about Music and branding with Kate Young. Founder and CEO of Soho Music Group. I had the pleasure of working with Kate on a number of projects when I was at peermusic and it was amazing to sit down and chat with her about the evolution of sync and music supervision and how the music business and brands are looking at working together in the current industry. If you’re interested in the world of music in advertising and brand partnerships then this is an episode for you to check out.  Soho Music Website (http://sohomusicgroup.com) Soho Music on Instagram  (https://www.instagram.com/_soho_music_/) Soho Music on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SohoMusicGroup) Email the podcast at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com (mailto:behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com)   Follow the show on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/) as well. 22 Oct 2019Harriet Moss (MD Manners McDade Music Publishing)01:00:22
Episode 12 of series 2 is an extra special episode as I managed to pin Manners McDade MD Harriet Moss down for a chat about music publishing and becoming a Managing Director of a company at 27. As discussed in the chat I first met Harriet a number of years back when she first joined Manners McDade looking after the sync side of the business and she has been killing it ever since. This is a brilliant chat and Harriet has loads of amazing insights to give about songwriting and music publishing as well as being a woman in the industry. Enjoy! 05 Nov 2019James Scarlett (Concert Promoter, Festival Founder)00:57:45
After an unexpected week off for health reasons I’m back with E13 of series 2 of my little podcast. This chat is with festival founder and concert promoter James Scarlett. This conversation was originally going to come out back in August on the back of a great live version of the chat about all things live music and putting on music festivals that we had at this years 2000 trees festival but for many reasons I was unable to put that episode out so have done this wonderful do over conversation. James is a great person to talk to about live music and has a very interesting perspective on working in the business as someone who got into it that little bit later than most. We also have almost the exact same taste in music which is always nice when you find yourself in a music chat. Hope you enjoy it. 2000 Trees Twitter (https://twitter.com/2000trees) Arc’Tan’Gent Twitter (https://twitter.com/ATGFestival) Email the podcast at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com  (mailto:behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com ) Follow the show on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/) as well. EP 14. More live music chat with Rob McGee, Booking agent with Empire Agency. Rob is based in Bristol and is booking agent for bands such as Lazy Day, Tusks, Thumper & Tungz. Rob talks opening and honestly about starting up his own business and the struggles that came with it which was refreshing and great to listen to. He also talks about the deal he has done this year to become part of the larger ‘Empire Agency’. We met up in Bristol venue Hy Brasil (RIP) and it was a really interesting insight into the live music business. Empire Agency website (https://www.empireagency.com/) . 19 Nov 2019James Pepper (Guitar Tech)00:57:19
This weeks episode takes a different look at the live music business. After speaking to promoters and booking agents here is a chat with a member of the touring crew. James Pepper is a uni friend who is now doing wonderful things over in the USA as a major part of Nathaniel Rateliff’s road crew. Pepper has been in this work for around 8 years now and has worked with other bands like The Temperance Movement and Frightened Rabbit and we have an awesome catch up chat about all this touring and life in the team with the band. It was a lot of fun (and frustrating at times due to technical issues) to record, I hope you enjoy listening. 26 Nov 2019Daisy Carberry (Marketing at BMG Rights Management)00:49:12
This episode (10) of the pod is with Daisy Carberry. Marketing co-ordinator at BMG Rights Management. Daisy is another one of the wonderful ex students of mine who have kindly been up for coming on the show to chat about what they are up to since graduating from uni and Daisy is currently smashing it at BMG. We talk about her time at uni and how she realised it was the business side and not the songwriting side of music that she wanted to pursue. We talk about taking the plunge and moving to London without any roots there and we talk about what day to day life at BMG looks like. 03 Dec 2019Luke Armitage (SVP Global Marketing Astralwerks)00:49:34
Episode 17 is with Luke Armitage. Someone I have known since University and who I have seen go from Intern at Universal Publishing a decade ago through to Vice President of Global Marketing of Astral Werks (Part of Capitol Records) based in LA. Luke is a very bright and driven person who was always going to do well and it was really great catching up via the internet so that I could talk to him about his career in the music business and how he has viewed it all along the way. I hope to get him back on to talk through some of the work he has done in more detail but for now please enjoy hearing about Lukes journey through Universal Music Group (with a brief stop at Metropolis Studios along the way). https://www.astralwerks.com/ https://twitter.com/Astralwerks https://www.instagram.com/astralwerksrecords/ https://twitter.com/lukearmitage https://www.instagram.com/lukearmitage/ The podcast is hosted by #audioboom and you can listen to, subscribe, follow, like and review the podcast on all the main podcast platforms including #spotify #applepodcasts, #googlepodcasts, #acast and most other pod apps #musicbusiness #musicindustry #musicbusinesstips #musicindustrytips #universalmusic #astralwerks #dancemusic #anenglishmaninLA #musicmarketing #recordlabels #metropolisstudios #podcaster #podcasting #podcast #musicpodcast #musicbusinesspodcast #musicindustrypodcast #yellow
11 Dec 2019Dom Frazer (Boileroom Music Venue)00:54:40
This week's Episode is taking another look at the world of live music for a different point of view. This time from the venue owners perspective with Dom Frazer from Boileroom in Guildford. I was put in touch with Dom through a mutual friend in order to have this chat so this was the first time we had spoken and it was a wonderful conversation about all things related to venues. I personally love these episodes where I get to nerd out on things as a novice and Dom was a total fountain of information and I’d love to have another chance to speak with her about all the things we didn't get a chance to cover. 17 Dec 2019Hannah Cartwright (Composer, Artist - Snow Ghosts)01:01:15
The penultimate episode of series 2 is with the wonderful Hannah Cartwright from the band Snow Ghosts (amongst many other creative projects that we discuss). She invited me to come to her studio (castle) near Bath and have a chat about her life in music and being a composer, being in bands and writing music for media. I had met Hannah the first time when she was part of the team at production music house ‘Extreme Music’ who we talk about a bit in the episode as well. Really enjoyed this conversation and the massive cups of teas I was made. Would love to get her back on to talk more about the creative processes so watch this space for that. The final episode for 2019 is here and it’s a great chat with Promotion, Publicity and Tour Marketing manager at Redbull Records Joe Kettle. Joe is another friend from Uni (I promise there are only a couple more of these) who has done some amazing things in his journey through the music business. In this episode we discuss artist management, Redbull records themselves and how they operate in the business as well as how best to navigate the interesting world of promotions and publicity in the modern music business. Really appreciate Joe fitting me in so close to Christmas and I’ll get told off if I don’t also mention that his band (the Noughty Boys - featuring two other podcast guests Danny Roberts (https://audioboom.com/posts/7020286-danny-roberts-a-r-manager-decca-records) and Andy Bibey (https://audioboom.com/posts/7227143-andy-bibey-manager-freelance-consultant) ) are playing at the Dogstar in Brixton on January 31st. Giles is an editor in the TV world in Bristol and also the founder and owner of a music production company based out that way as well. So we talked about working in TV and what goes into that, how music fits into that side of his work (great insight into a very important area of the business for those interested in getting their music used in TV and beyond) and also how things have been faring in the world of production music. This is a great companion episode to episode 10 with Ray Pagden (https://audioboom.com/posts/7104928-ray-pagden-production-music-motus-music) who also discussed production music so get involved. https://luckyg.co.uk/ https://www.instagram.com/luckygproductionmusic/ https://twitter.com/LuckyGLibrary https://www.facebook.com/luckyglibrary Email the podcast at behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com  Follow the show on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/behindthebusinesspod/) as well. A special one for Episode 50. I was going to get 2 previous guests back to speak a little bit about what they have been up to these past 2 years but both conversations were longer than anticipated and too good to edit down more than this so they have been split into separate episodes. Here is Danny Roberts (Episode 5 (https://audioboom.com/posts/7020286-danny-roberts-a-r-manager-decca-records) ) returning to talk about leaving Decca and joining Made Records and what they are doing and how it all works now. 14 Sep 2020Mike Burgess Returns (Sound with Mike music business coach)00:50:03
Here is the other returning guest. This was meant to be part two of episode 50 but instead it had to be a separate episode in its own right. Mike was Episode 1 (https://audioboom.com/posts/7020047-mike-burgess-sound-with-mike-music-business-coach) so its fitting that he is also episodes 51 and kicks off the next 50 (I hope) episodes. A lot has happened for Mike in the first 2 years of his new business start up and he talk candidly about what he has been working on these past two years. Some really interesting stuff here.
