15 Apr 2020 | Seth Godin | Don't Fly Your Business Too Close to the Sun | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:46:07
Everyone knows that Icarus’s father made him wings and told him not to fly too close to the sun; he ignored the warning and plunged to his doom. The lesson: Play it safe. Listen to the experts. It was the perfect propaganda for the industrial economy. What boss wouldn’t want employees to believe that obedience and conformity are the keys to success? But we tend to forget that Icarus was also warned not to fly too low, because seawater would ruin the lift in his wings. Flying too low is even more dangerous than flying too high, because it feels deceptively safe. The safety zone has moved. Conformity no longer leads to comfort. But the good news is that creativity is scarce and more valuable than ever. So is choosing to do something unpredictable and brave: Make art. Being an artist isn’t a genetic disposition or a specific talent. It’s an attitude we can all adopt. It’s a hunger to seize new ground, make connections, and work without a map. If you do those things you’re an artist, no matter what it says on your business card.
Godin shows us how it’s possible and convinces us why it’s essential.

While only some of the present positive and negative effects of any ripples (ala Golden State Killer captured by DNA tech) emerge, the jury is still out on what the future holds. My prediction is that it's going to be rough seas before it's smooth sailing. That said, I'm on board. I'm all in because, well, it's personal. 03 Mar 2019 | Seth Godin | The Best Advice for Business & Life | Podcast series / Marketing | 00:09:07
Seth Godin gave me some advice that changed my life.Fair warning, I share some personal stuff. This is an edited clip from the end of a 2-hour by-invite-only conference I hosted with Seth in Feb. 2018. It has since gone on to received over half a million views on Youtube with no signs of slowing down. If you've been playing the victim or waiting to get picked...this podcast episode might be for you. It turns out The "soft skills" like honestly, integrity and vulnerability have always been the most important to any kind of success. Ironically, unlike most other business related skills that can be taught, these skills must be developed because they are not inherent. I'm working on getting better in this area but admittedly it takes work. I like what author Brené Brown said: “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” Here's a little video of me trying to put this into practice. 01 Apr 2021 | Lessons of Courage in Life & Business from a Paralympic Medalist | Amy Purdy | 00:51:20
Amy Purdy has lived an incredible life. She grew up with the love of Nature, health wellness and travel. She was also a passionate snowboarder. At 19, her life took a detour. After experiencing flu-like symptoms, Amy was rushed to the hospital in a state of septic shock. When she entered into the hospital she was given less than a 2% chance of survival, put on life support and placed into a coma. After multiple blood transfusions, and the removal of her ruptured spleen, doctors diagnosed Amy with Meningococcal Meningitis, a vaccine preventable bacterial infection. Due to the lack of circulation she had suffered, doctors had to amputate her legs below the knee. She later received a donated kidney from her father a week before her 21st birthday. After going through this life-altering experience, Amy challenged herself to move on with her life and attain goals that even those who have both legs struggle to achieve. She is one of the top ranked adaptive snowboarders in the world, the 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist and is currently the only double-leg amputee competing in snowboarding at the world-class level. Amy’s creativity, positive outlook and her never-give-up attitude have opened doors to many other opportunities, including being featured in a Madonna music video, a lead actress role in an award-winning independent film and multiple creative modeling projects including a photo shoot with musician and artist Nikki Sixx where her legs were custom made from steel to look like ice picks. Amy has evolved into a powerful inspirational and motivational speaker who has been seen by millions of people and invited to share her story to audiences around the world. Amy’s TED x Orange Coast talk, “Living Beyond Limits” is the number one recommended video by TED x OC to incoming TED speakers formulating their own presentations. Amy’s story and images have been featured in numerous national and international publications, and in 2012 she and her longtime boyfriend, Daniel Gale, raced around the world on CBS’s The Amazing Race. In May of 2013, Amy was named by the International Olympic Committee as one of the top 15 most marketable para-athletes in the world. Although Amy has numerous accomplishments, she is most proud of co-founding Adaptive Action Sports with her husband Daniel Gale. Created in 2005, AAS is a non-profit organization that helps those with permanent disabilities get involved in action sports. AAS has partnered with ESPN and runs “adaptive” action sport competitions at the summer and winter ESPN X Games. These events were instrumental in getting adaptive snowboarding added to the 2014 Paralympic Games. In the spring of 2014, Amy inspired millions of fans with her stunning performances on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, eventually becoming the show’s runner-up. Amy also recently shared her remarkable story alongside Oprah Winfrey, as part of Oprah’s The Life You Want Tour. Where she toured with Oprah sharing the stage through cities across America. Amy was also featured in a Superbowl Commercial for her partner Toyota which aired just after kickoff. The commercial fettered Amy Running, Dancing, Snowboarding, modeling and speaking all to the voice of the great Mohammad Ali and his ” How Great I am” speech.

03 Mar 2022 | Wired to Eat: The Business of Food | Robb Wolf | 00:59:24
Wolf believes that all wellness is rooted in sleep, food, movement, and community and that if we can get a handle on those things we will need to see our doctors far less. The onus falls on us, but he’s doing his part to educate and help the masses not only with his books, but also with LMNT Electrolyte supplements. https://www.behindthebrand.tv/lmnt His story and his life’s mission is one that I personally vibe with and can relate to. I have had my own moments of experimenting with food and exercise and diet in my own search to deal with chronic headaches and sleep apnea. In my journey, I saw countless doctors who took educated guesses on how to fix what was ailing me, but in the end, I knew intuitively to a degree what was going to work and what was not. Neither Wolf nor I want to disparage doctors in any way. When something goes wrong, having a trusted physician is an incredible advocate to have, but when it comes to overall wellness, there are actions that we as people can take to advocate for ourselves that limit how much medical care we need. 03 Mar 2019 | How TOMS Found Outrageous Business Success by Giving Back | Blake Mycoskie | Podcast series / Marketing | 00:37:40
Blake Mycoskie is the Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS, and the person behind the idea of One for One®, a business model that helps a person in need with every product purchased. A simple idea has grown into a global movement: TOMS Shoes has provided over 86 million pairs of shoes to children since 2006, TOMS Eyewear has restored sight to over 600,000 people since 2011 and TOMS Roasting Company has helped provide over 600,000 weeks of safe water since launching in 2014. In 2015, TOMS Bag Collection was founded with the mission to help provide training for skilled birth attendants and distribute birth kits containing items that help a woman safely deliver her baby. As of 2016, TOMS has supported safe birth services for over 25,000 mothers. TOMS humble beginnings happened unintentionally. While traveling in Argentina in 2006, Blake witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes. His solution to the problem was simple, yet revolutionary: to create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. Blake's vision soon turned into the simple business idea that provided the powerful foundation for TOMS. Want to watch the video version of Behind the Brand? 30 Jul 2021 | Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less in Life & Business | Greg McKeown | Podcast series / Marketing | 00:51:27
I think you’re really going to like this episode with bestselling author Greg McKeown. He’s a Brit and seems like a deeply spiritual man with strong convictions for his family and faith. That is what he credits for a recent health scare with one of his children who had a serious undiagnosed illness but eventually regained her health. Greg talks about the idea of Essentialism, which is not like minimalism where you pair down your belongings to the bare bones… No, Essentialism is about keeping only the things, ideas and beliefs that serve you well. This resonates with me as I’ve shared my story when I felt like a victim 10 years ago during a really dark time in my life. I was able to swap that story and adopt a new one of being a survivor —that was my essential keepsake. I would also like to thank our sponsor LMNT — and speaking of essentials…it’s a good segue into this amazing drink that’s improved my health in a big way. Some of you know I’ve been battling migraines for a while and my doctor hasn’t found any solutions for me. I’m so sick of taking medicine so I talked to several pro athlete friends and their trainers who told me I was probably missing important electrolytes. I ordered some LMNT [spelled with the 4 letters LMNT] which as essentials like magnesium, potassium and sodium and over a 30 day period I saw my headaches decrease by about half. I am hooked and so I reached out to the folks at LMNT HQ and we’re now working together to help more of you. Electrolyte deficiency or imbalances can cause headaches, cramps, fatigue, and weakness. For those FASTING meals or working out for fitness: electrolytes can make the difference between feeling great and feeling like garbage. When you sweat, the primary electrolyte lost is sodium - athletes can lose up to 7 grams per day. When sodium isn’t replaced, it’s common to experience muscle cramps and fatigue. Anyway, I drink one before working out in the morning and one later after dinner to hydrate for the next day. Want to try a free sample pack? Goto: DrinkLMNT.com/BryanElliott and they will send you all of the flavors to try, shipping is 5 bucks. My personal favorite is the chocolate because I put it in my protein shake. I also love the Orange Salt. There’s a new watermelon flavor and I’m excited to try it!

04 Jul 2022 | The Business of Personalized Mental Health | Charlie Health CEO, Carter Barnhart | 00:58:28
Trigger warning for listeners sensitive to mentions of sexual trauma or violence, this episode contains references to rape and recovery from sexual trauma. Most teenagers move through the world with a feeling of invincibility. With a few rare exceptions, teens who are still living in the care of their parents and within the family unit home are sheltered from life’s harshest realities. While they might be individuating, preparing for college and the life they’ll live once they leave the nest, it usually takes a major life event to shake a teen out of their childhood bubble and welcome them to the realities of the real world. For some, this might mean little-t traumas like getting fired from a job, or going through a breakup, but for Carter Barnhart, it was something far more difficult. When she was just fourteen, Barnhart was out at a concert with friends, and she was raped. One night and just like that her life changed forever. Her innocence and childlike wonder shifted to a place of darkness, loneliness and pain. Barnhart comes from a strong family, and she is close with her parents and her brother, yet none of them could reach her. She didn’t tell them what happened to her, so on her own she was facing depression, anxiety and passive suicidal ideation.

10 Jul 2022 | Alex Hormozi | Listen to This if You Want to Be a Millionaire in Business | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:43:30
Do you know the difference between $1 million and $1 billion? It's a lot. If you were to compare the delta in time, a million seconds is about 11 days. However, a billion seconds is almost 32 years. Alex Hormozi, entrepreneur, author, and CEO of Acquisition.com, has a growing portfolio of companies worth upwards of $100 million. Hormozi has a remarkable story that has all the makings of a Hollywood movie. Triumph and tragedy; high stakes business failure and success; complicated family relationships; romance; and more. Hormozi says that by the age of 32, he and his wife Leila's portfolio of companies crossed $85 million per year in revenue spanning brick-and-mortar service, licensing, education, SaaS, and e-commerce. In my opinion, they are on a trajectory to hit the billion-dollar milestone sooner than most. In his 20s, Hormozi opted to choose his own path and not the one that his successful Iranian immigrant father hoped he'd choose. Many children of immigrants might relate to this story and the subsequent consequence of the choice. Hormozi's decision led to serious conflict and years of tension -- even thoughts of suicide -- between Hormozi and his father that he had to figure out how to heal. In spite of it all, Hormozi remained true to himself and eventually, he hit major success working in the world of fitness and fitness business. Hormozi tells me that in his youth, everything he did in his life was in pursuit of his father's approval, and that he had never really made decisions for himself and for his own joy. Ultimately, it became clear that he didn't want to live the life that he was living. He says that for a short time he contemplated not living anymore at all, but ultimately decided that risking disappointing his father and carving his own path was a better way out, and so he took that risk. Listen to this wide ranging conversation with $100 million Alex Hormozi -- and you might catch the formula to becoming financially free. 20 Jul 2022 | Do Hard Things in Business: The Surprising Science of Real Toughness | Steve Magness | 00:56:35
Steve Magness never imagined he’d be a writer —let alone caught in the eye of one of most controversial competitive athletic storms entangled with running brand behemoth Nike, in what could be the biggest scandal since Lance Armstrong. As a track and field athlete in high school, he dreamed of one day being a running coach, or an Olympic athlete. As it happens for so many, life took him on a different path. He is now the author and co-author of many bestselling books including, The Science of Running, The Passion Paradox, Peak Performance and his latest, Do Hard Things http://www.stevemagness.com/do-hard-things “I wanted to go to the Olympics and be a professional athlete, and that was all I cared about,” he tells me. “I went to school because it was an expectation. I went to college because it allowed me to continue to compete and run. Beyond that, honestly I didn’t have a ton of interests.” He’s not a competitive runner anymore but today, as I sit down with him to discuss his new book, Do Hard Things, we can’t help but shoot the breeze about running and how it’s really a metaphor for life.
31 Jul 2022 | Chris Voss | Master the Art of Negotiation in Business and Learn to Win | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:23:35
It's 1983 and Chris Voss was hired at the FBI just before his 26th birthday. During his 24 years of service with the Bureau, Voss became a leading international kidnapping negotiator. He regularly engaged with some of the world's most dangerous criminals in extremely high-stakes scenarios. One of the moments that put Chris on the map was the time he successfully negotiated the release of hostages after a 1993 bank robbery at a Chase Manhattan bank in Brooklyn. I imagine Chris's life a little like a scene from one of my favorite TV shows, The Americans, a period drama about two KGB spies (portrayed by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys) posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., during the Reagan administration. Voss is currently the founder and head of the Black Swan Group, where he and his team are leveraging his deep knowledge and experience to train businesses and individuals to become highly effective negotiators. Here are a few things you might learn from Chris during this session: 1. How to decipher your leverage and negotiate from strength [ "The enemy is not the person across the table; the adversary is the situation." ] In other words, don't make people the enemy--focus instead on the problem to be solved. Negotiation shouldn't be a zero-sum game if you're planning to be in business long-term. So how do we win without burning bridges? The best strategy according to Voss is to "come up with a better deal than both parties could have imagined. You're both faced with different aspects of the same problem. So by definition, you have to look out for the other person to get to the best deal you can get." 2. How to figure out if you're the favorite or the fool... 3. How to use tactical empathy... While many believe that business is war, Voss sees getting to wins as a collaboration with effort on both sides rooted in empathy. "Aim to magnify positive emotions. To try and take emotions out of negotiation is a fool's errand." So be kind. Be professional. Put yourself in your rival's shoes and figure out a way for you to both be happy. 4. How to use mirroring... And much more! “For me, the three pillars of health are: Sleep. Nutrition. Exercise. Sleep, especially on a thermo-regulated bed at the right temperature customized for me, has been the key to feeling my best and performing at a high level. The Eight Sleep Pro Pod is a game-changer!” Go to https://eightsleep.com/BRY to start sleeping cool this summer and save (a lot with my special code). Based on my research, this actually may be an adaptation from a screenplay or movie -- but whatever the case and for me --the words and message are more important than the context of the person (who may have written it): Eight Sleep: There are a ton more options so I would suggest checking them out. 27 Jun 2023 | Vuori: $4 Billion Dollar Startup Business | Founder Joe Kudla | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:15:52
Joe Kudla, Founder & CEO of San Diego-based activewear brand, Vuori (meaning "mountain" directly translated in Finnish -- and by the brand as an aspirational metaphor for climbing and achieving one's dreams) is at the helm of a $4 billion dollar startup. Founded in 2015, Vuori was created from the notion that men did not have the same, versatile activewear options as their female counterparts – a gap in the quickly growing market that Joe decided to fill. He set out to conceptualize and craft garments made for both movement & everyday life that men would actually want to wear – a vision that gave birth to the Vuori brand. Throughout the years, Joe has led Vuori to see incredible growth as a brand – becoming profitable in just two years into business (2017, and catalyzed through the brand’s $400 million capital raise in the Fall 2021. Joe and his team have always stuck to the core ethos of the start-up mission they set out to solve in the beginning – creating unparalleled active and everyday wear staples, hinging on technical fabrications, cutting edge silhouettes, and unique innovation concepts, to make a mark on the category unlike any other brand today. Today, Joe and his team support a thriving business that is split equally across genders – delivering on core best sellers and expanding the innovation pipeline year over year. However, growth is not only seen on a DTC basis. Since its start in 2015, Vuori has successfully expanded on an omni channel basis under Joe’s helm – opening stores in nearly 30 cities nationwide and at retailers around the globe, as well as captivating consumers across digital/in-person community building initiatives – such as Vuori’s free online workout streaming service and in-person series – ACTV Club. 09 Jul 2023 | You Should Be Running Your Business Like THIS! | Cale Owen, CEO of Gym Launch | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:16:08
I really think you’re going to like this one with Cale Owen, CEO of Gym Launch, Prestige Labs, and GymOwners.com. Cale was running his own struggling gym business when he met Alex & Leila Hormozi, founders of Gym Launch. Within a short amount of time, he basically went from gym owner to jumping on board Gym Launch where he was in sales to CEO in about 5 years. Here’s what Alex had to say about Cale. Now you could say that it may be in Alex’s best interest to support his appointed CEO —but you can’t fake the funk as they say. And Founders don’t always get along with their CEOs nor do they get much time if they don’t perform. Remember the movie The Founder, starring Michael Keaton — an American biographical drama of businessman Ray Kroc that depicts the founding story of McDonalds? Nick Offerman plays one of the original McDonald brothers and they not only don’t ever see eye-to-eye with Ray Kroc, but Kroc ends up out witting them and pushing them out of the business altogether. The lesson here for me is, If you’re a founder and you find a great CEO who can do the job better than you, get out of the way and take the profits right to the bank. Cale and I also talked about growing up playing baseball and some possible business lessons from arguably the best hitter in the game, Ted Williams. Williams was obsesses with stats and science of how to optimize his swing and batting average. He labeled the strike zone with ball placement from 200-400. Sure, he could hit a ball that was in the zone a little high and inside but it would only yield a .310 average. What Williams was waiting for was the pitch chest high down the middle that he could hit every time for .400. My conversation with Cale is definitely chalked full of lessons and worth a listen. I found Brand Boss, Bill Harper on TikTok of all places where he has built an impressive library of short form content around branding and marketing. Harper runs an agency out of North Carolina called WMH and it's worth checking out. Bill and I riff on a variety of topics and talk about our experiences and opinions on how to build a brand and how to be successful. I was in the airport waiting for my flight back to LA as you do and I saw a man, sitting a little ways away in another terminal and waiting like me, look my way and give me the hello nod. You know what mean, right? He got up and walked over to me — and I’m thinking “okay, do I know this guy?” But he didn’t look familiar. Then he asked, are you Bryan Elliott? With all the enthusiasm my introverted self could muster, I muttered yes, and he proceeded to tell me that he’s a big fan of the podcast and how much it means to him. I was really flattered but also stunned — like a dear in the headlights — because I don’t get approached very much like this. But it was nice. 04 Sep 2023 | Alex Hormozi | $100M Business: How to Get Strangers to Want to Buy Your Stuff | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:38:16
I’d like to re-introduce you to Alex Hormozi, a entrepreneur who is having a moment. If you don’t know Alex, he’s pretty amazing and is an amalgamation of influencers who have gone before as if Gary Vaynerchuk, Russel Brunson, Tony Robbins and Schwarzenegger had a baby. He's an archetype of an influencer who is selling a lifestyle like his own. It’s not a get rich scheme, but more of lifestyle of thinking and acting like someone rich — so as to become so. Alex was raised by his Iranian-American dad with whom he didn’t alway see eye to eye, and spend the better part of his adult life trying to be enough for him. After contemplating his own mortality, he finally realized that he had to follow his own dreams at the expense of possibly losing his father’s approval and never having a relationship. He embarked on a journey that ultimately led to incredible success in the world of entrepreneurship. However, his path was far from conventional. Alex initially followed the traditional route, earning a degree in Organizational Development with a focus on Corporate Strategy from Vanderbilt . He even landed a prestigious job as a management consultant with high-level security clearance at a big job. But after two years, he realized the 9-to-5 life wasn't for him, and he decided to strike out on his own. Passionate about fitness, Alex found a gym owner mentor who taught him the ropes. He lived well below his means trying to learn everything about the business. He was finally able to buy his own gym in 2013. Within just three years, he expanded to three more locations, generating substantial monthly revenue but made mistakes with partnerships that went sour and nearly cost him everything. With his back up against the wall, he pivoted to training gyms how to get more leads and sales and eventually decided to sell off more than 32 businesses in just two years, earning him millions of dollars. Beyond his business acumen, Alex is also an accomplished author, and just released his second book, $100M Leads, which broke a Guinness world record selling 100,000 books in one day. Alex is living master class on how to build a personal brand to accomplish your goals. Even if you’ve heard this one before, it’s worth another listen — with pen and paper in hand —please enjoy this re-booted recording with the incomparable Alex Hormozi. ➡️ Powerful cooling down to 37°F ➡️ Smartphone connectivity for ultimate control ➡️ Sleek exterior design The all-in-one design offers a truly plug-and-plunge set-up and makes maintenance super easy thanks to very accessible filter. 18 Oct 2023 | How to Be a Better Critical Thinker in Life & Business | Neil deGrasse Tyson | 01:43:05
When I was a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s, one of my favorite shows, playing on repeat in reruns, was the Twilight Zone created by Rod Serling. It was a well written show where characters find themselves dealing with “disturbing or unusual events” that usually ended with an unexpected plot twist and moral to the story for everyone to ponder as food for thought. We are living in interesting times to say the least — it kind of feels like a Twilight Zone episode sometimes and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know what is true and what is fiction. As a kid, the show was one of my first exposures to the idea of critical thinking, which by definition means, “the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment.” But critical thinking alone doesn’t always get us to the truth. And it turns out that humans are not naturally born with the gift of being objective. We really have to work at it. To think critically, we must be aware of our own biases and assumptions — and then apply consistent standards when considering the sources. Sources are tricky too. I remember a time when I believed what I saw on the news. Believed that doctors got into medicine just to help people. Believed that my religion was God’s true church on Earth and my church leaders upheld the highest standards of honesty and would never lie or do harm to anyone. This episode with Neil deGrasse Tyson is NOT about trying to break your shelf or dissuade you from your deeply held beliefs. It’s about learning more about critical thinking and the scientific method so you can figure out what is real and what fiction. To be a seeker of truth and not be caught up in the trap of group-think. 24 Oct 2023 | Building a Flywheel Business: The Incredible Story of Momentous | CEO, Jeff Byers | Podcast series / Marketing | 01:26:58
Sometimes the riskiest thing to do is play it safe. This is the incredible story and rise of the Momentous brand. 2016 was a remarkable year as four very different people headed down four very separate paths that in just a few short years would intersect in the most serendipitous way. Each person was at a different stage of life and experience but started to crank what bestselling author Jim Collins calls a flywheel. There was a young and recently retired NFL player, turned entrepreneur. A media mogul who started a VC firm. A high school student with a big idea. And last but not least, there was a former Bay Area Grom, who spent time in a youth detention center as a teen, but turned is life around with a passion for teaching science. In 2016 he would transfer from San Diego State to a new position at Stanford University. Collins writes, “No matter how dramatic the end result, good-to-great transformations never happen in one fell swoop. In building a great company there is no single defining action, no grand program, no one killer innovation, no solitary lucky break, no miracle moment. Rather, the process resembles relentlessly pushing a giant, heavy flywheel, turn upon turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough, and beyond.” ➡️ Powerful cooling down to 37°F ➡️ Smartphone connectivity for ultimate control ➡️ Sleek exterior design The all-in-one design offers a truly plug-and-plunge set-up and makes maintenance super easy thanks to very accessible filter. "If I follow the trail of your stress, it will take me to your deepest fears…" I have a confession — prior to meeting Tony Robbins, I was not the biggest Tony Robbins fan. I’m not the kind of person who would attend one of his events…jump up and down or tolerate him shouting at me during a 10-hour seminar. But then he taught me, "Life is the dance between what we desire and fear most." Tony who is larger than life actually made a huge impact on how I think about myself and the world.
