10 Nov 2022Special Guests - Meyers Leonard and Aaron Jungreis01:34:56

Meyers Patrick Leonard (born February 27, 1992) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini before being selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 11th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. After spending his first seven seasons with the Trail Blazers, he was traded to the Heat in the 2019 offseason. He reached the NBA Finals with the Heat in 2020.

On March 9, 2021, Leonard received criticism for using the anti-jewish slur "kike" during a Twitch stream while playing Call of Duty: Warzone. The Heat announced the same day that they were reviewing the matter and that Leonard would be "away from the team indefinitely." The eSports organization FaZe Clan cut ties with him later that day, although he remained an investor. He later apologized for using the slur, stating that he did not know what it meant.

Aaron Jungreis, entering the real estate industry in 1993 has earned a solid reputation for identifying opportunities and closing deals. As the Nets snapped a four-game losing streak, a group of eight Nets fans including Aaron Jungreis sat courtside with shirts on that read “FIGHT ANTISEMITISM.” It was a reference to the blowback Irving had found himself facing after sharing on his Twitter and Instagram accounts an Amazon link to a film called “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America,” which contains numerous antisemitic tropes.

12 Jan 2023Special Guest - Abie Rotenberg01:16:58

Abie Rotenberg is a prolific Orthodox Jewish musician, composer and entertainer from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has been producing music since the mid-1970s with a style which has been described as "soft and sweet" with a strong folk influence. Rotenberg has cited the musicians Rabbi Ben Zion Shenker and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach as strong influences.

While his folk-inspired sound and inspirational lyrics are strongly reminiscent of Carlebach, Rotenberg's soft and sometimes melancholic voice, however, contrasts with Carlebach's ecstatic style. Rotenberg has collaborated with other Jewish musicians including Mordechai ben David, Avraham Fried, Yehuda Schechter, Yaakov Shwekey, Baruch Levine, Moshe Yess and Shlomo Simcha with whom he co-starred in Israel National Radio's Miracles 18 concert.

In September 2015, Rotenberg published his first novel, The Season of Pepsi Meyers, a book about an 18-year old Jewish boy playing for the New York Yankees, set in the future (Feldheim Publishers).

In November 2016, Rotenberg released Eliyahu Hanavi, under his full name Avraham Yom Tov Rotenberg, an in-depth analysis of the life of Elijah the Prophet (Mesorah Publishers).

Notes: 🎶Did you know that Abie Rotenberg has an underrated song that he wishes more people knew about.

12 Aug 2021Special Guest - Yosef Mendelevich, Renowned Russian Refusenik01:20:34

Yosef Mendelevitch (b. 1947 in Riga), was a refusenik from the former Soviet Union, also known as a "Prisoner of Zion" and now a politically unaffiliated rabbi living in Jerusalem who gained fame for his adherence to Judaism and public attempts to emigrate to Israel at a time when it was against the law in the USSR.

Mendelevich was born in Riga and started his Jewish activities in the 1960s. He formed a student group of underground Jewish Education in 1966 and became an editor of an underground newsletter Iton on Jewish issues in 1969. Being repeatably refused the right to immigration, he became one of the leaders of the Dymshits–Kuznetsov hijacking affair, recounted in his 2012 memoir, Unbroken Spirit. As punishment, he was imprisoned for eleven years. During the imprisonment he was punished for keeping Jewish precepts. In 1981, after a worldwide struggle, he was released and immigrated to Israel.

08 Sep 2022Celebrating the 100th Episode and Special Eitan Katz01:48:08

This episode celebrates 100 episodes of the show! From Coffee Talk to Behind the Bima, a lot has changed, but so much has stayed the same. Tune in to hear about your favorite episodes and moments from this podcast.

We were thrilled to be joined by Jewish musician Eitan Katz.

A member of an extremely musical family, Eitan Katz discovered that he had not just a love of music, but the talent as well.  Spending his childhood moving back and forth between Los Angeles and Israel, Eitan was exposed to a wide variety of music from his earliest days.  During his high school years, Eitan found himself gravitating towards the music of R’ Shlomo Carlebach which resonated deep within him and prompted him to take up the guitar, an instrument that instantly felt like it belonged in his hands.  By age 16 Eitan had written his first original song, the precursor to many heartfelt compositions that brought the words of davening and Tanach to life in unprecedented ways.

His first two albums, Eilecha, produced by his father, beloved chazzan, Avshalom Katz, and Biglal Avos were released jointly with his brother Shlomo. Eitan has six more solo albums to his credit. While Lemaancha, Boruch Hu, Live in Jerusalem, and Shuvu feature many of Eitan’s original compositions, Eitan Katz Unplugged and Eitan Katz Unplugged 2 feature the niggunim of Shlomo Carlebach.

He retired in 2011 to focus on his conversion to Orthodox Judaism, but soon returned under his new Hebrew name Nissim Black (Nissim means 'miracles' in Hebrew) and began writing from a more religious standpoint. He appeared on Shtar's song "Rabbit Hole" (2012). He has since released a mixtape called Miracle Music (2013) and the studio albums Nissim (2013), Lemala (2017), and Gibor (2019).

Nissim Baruch Black was born Damian Jamohl Black in Seattle on December 9, 1986, the son of rappers Mia Black and James "Captain Crunch" Croone. His grandparents had also been musicians, playing alongside Ray Charles and Quincy Jones. He grew up in Seattle's Seward Park neighborhood. He was raised as a Sunni Muslim, but was non-practicing and converted to Christianity at the age of 14 after attending an Evangelical summer camp.

His parents divorced when he was two years old, and his mother took him with her and remarried shortly thereafter. Both his biological parents and stepfather used and sold drugs from home, prompting an FBI raid on the house in 1995 which resulted in his mother's arrest; she later died from an overdose at the age of 37

07 Apr 2022Special Guest - Coach Bruce Pearl01:00:31

Bruce Alan Pearl (born March 18, 1960) is an American college basketball coach, and the head coach of the Auburn Tigers men's basketball program.

A video of Pearl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_nRO8KEEFo) went viral in which he said at a press conference:
"My Hebrew name is Mordecai, and I think my family gave me that name for this reason. Mordecai talked to Esther the queen and said, 'Look, Esther, you might survive this for a little while, but you won't survive this. He's really going to kill all the Jewish people and your family.' And he gave Esther the courage to try to see if she could turn the King's heart, and she did. And saved the nation. So some of you may be uncomfortable — you guys asked the question, right? You asked the question about Ukraine. We say never again. I was born in 1960, 15 years after they opened up the gates, and they saw 6 million Jews were murdered and 3 million more people.

So if Tara VanDerveer wants money for 3-pointers, I'll up whatever they're offering. I'm in. I'm all in. Help the Ukrainian people survive that."

Natan Sharansky is a remarkable figure whose life story embodies the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Born Anatoly Borisovich Shcharansky on January 20, 1948, in Donetsk, Ukraine (formerly part of the Soviet Union), he later changed his name to Natan Sharansky. Sharansky's journey began as a gifted mathematician and chess player, which led him to pursue a career in science. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he became deeply involved in the Soviet dissident movement during the 1970s, advocating for human rights and freedom of expression. In 1977, Sharansky was arrested by the KGB on fabricated charges of espionage and treason. He was subjected to intense interrogations and endured nine years of imprisonment, including long periods of solitary confinement.

Despite the harsh conditions, Sharansky remained steadfast in his commitment to his beliefs, becoming an iconic symbol of resistance against Soviet oppression. Sharansky's plight gained international attention, and he became a cause célèbre for human rights organizations and activists around the world. His wife, Avital, spearheaded an international campaign advocating for his release, and their love story became a symbol of resilience and unwavering commitment. Finally, in 1986, after years of international pressure and negotiations, Sharansky was released as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. His arrival in Israel marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. In Israel, Sharansky became an influential political leader and advocate for democracy and human rights.

He served as a Member of Knesset (the Israeli parliament) and held several ministerial positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade. Sharansky's extraordinary journey from prisoner to statesman has made him a sought-after speaker and an inspiration to people from all walks of life. He has written several books, including his memoir "Fear No Evil," which chronicles his experiences and his unwavering commitment to freedom.

Today, Natan Sharansky continues to be a passionate advocate for democracy, human rights, and the State of Israel. His unwavering belief in the power of the individual to effect change serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those who face oppression and injustice.
