23 Apr 202444. Katie Ferraro - Unlocking the Benefits of Baby-Led Weaning: Nurturing Diverse Eating Habits from the Start00:45:44

Embark on a profound exploration of childhood nutrition as Katie Ferraro, a registered dietitian and mom to seven, including quadruplets, shares her '100 first foods' approach to baby-led weaning. Forget the predictable purees; we're talking about a solid foundation for your baby—quite literally. Learn how introducing natural, textured foods plays a crucial role in promoting jaw development and establishing diverse eating habits. As we discuss the stark contrasts in dietary variety between baby-led weaning and spoon-feeding, you'll discover how these early choices can shape your child's long-term health, potentially preventing restrictive food preferences and chronic diseases.

As a mother who has navigated the weaning journey firsthand, I open up about my own transformation from traditional feeding practices to becoming a staunch advocate for baby-led weaning. This episode isn't just about what's on the tiny spoon—or rather, not on it. We cover the broader implications, including the reintegration of breastfeeding and textured foods for holistic child development, and the ways early feeding techniques can impact dental health, sleep patterns, and even the likelihood of developing chronic diseases. Special attention is given to speech-language pathologists like Dawn Winkleman's role in creating feeding tools that align with the baby-led weaning philosophy, as well as the importance of sensory experiences in learning to eat and drink.

What's more, inclusivity takes center stage as we discuss Adapted Baby-Led Weaning with insights from Jill Rabin, ensuring that children of all abilities have the opportunity to embark on self-feeding journeys. We highlight the critical need for knowledgeable therapists and educated parents in navigating this transition safely. Ending on a reflective note, we ponder the impact of early eating habits and the importance of continuing these conversations. This episode is more than a listening experience—it's an invitation to be part of a movement towards healthier future generations.

17 Apr 202443. Balancing the Body: Exploring Craniosacral Therapy with Hilary Bilkis00:32:15

In this conversation, Renata Nehme and Hilary Bilkis discuss craniosacral therapy and its benefits. Hilary explains that craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on technique that helps balance the bones, membranes, and fluids in the skull, spinal cord, and connective tissue system of the body.

The training for craniosacral therapy is usually a series of four-day workshops, and practitioners often have a background in massage therapy or other touch-based professions. The therapy can be beneficial for people of all ages, from babies to adults, and can help with a variety of issues such as breastfeeding difficulties, torticollis, anxiety, unregulated emotions, and chronic pain.

The therapy works by quieting and regulating the nervous system, releasing tension in the body, and promoting overall well-being. It is not a massage and is performed with the client fully clothed. The frequency of sessions varies but is typically weekly for a few weeks, followed by less frequent sessions.

17 Apr 202443. Balancing the Body: Exploring Craniosacral Therapy with Hilary Bilkis00:33:41

16 Aug 202457. Inspiration by Integration with Dr. Jeevanan Jahendran, Dr. Shereen Lim, and Dr. Stanley Liu00:53:57

Imagine addressing your airway health before birth or identifying sleep disorders that could be causing your unexplained morning fatigue. Join us as we explore these transformative ideas with Dr. Shireen Lim, Dr. JJ, and Dr. Stanley Liu in our latest episode. These experts kick off with a sneak preview of the "Inspiration by Integration" meeting in Australia, emphasizing how early interventions in children's airway health can set the stage for a lifetime of better well-being. Dr. Lim's insights into pediatric care and Dr. JJ’s fascinating journey into sleep medicine will leave you rethinking the timing and approach to airway issues.

Women in their late 30s and early 40s often face a slew of unexplained symptoms, some of which might actually be tied to undiagnosed sleep disorders. Our conversation with Dr. JJ sheds light on the critical need for sophisticated sleep studies and a better understanding of sleep apnea, especially during pregnancy. We dig deep into how hormonal changes can exacerbate sleep issues, affecting not just personal health but also fertility. This episode is an eye-opener for healthcare professionals and patients alike, highlighting the importance of integrative approaches for optimal maternal and fetal outcomes.

TMJ disorders present another complex puzzle that we dissect through a multi-disciplinary lens. Early intervention, nutritional adequacy, and addressing nasal obstructions are pivotal in managing TMJ pain. Dr. Liu explains how sleep positions, chewing habits, and even seemingly minor facial asymmetries can contribute to these conditions. The episode wraps up with inspiring patient stories, advancements in smart mattress technology, and an invitation to join the Airway Circle for ongoing education. This rich discussion aims to enhance the quality of care for those grappling with sleep and airway health issues.

01 Apr 202567. Lack of Oxygenation and Brain Development & Function with Dr. Josh Madsen00:40:03

The oxygen flowing to our children's brains does far more than keep them alive—it shapes their entire development in ways most parents and even healthcare providers rarely consider. In this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Josh Madsen, we uncover the profound connection between proper breathing, brain oxygenation, and neurological development that impacts everything from reading ability to behavioral regulation.

Did you know that a baby who strongly lifts their head immediately after birth isn't necessarily showing advanced development, but potentially signaling neurological stress? Or that the popular "milestone relaxation" allowing children not to crawl could rob them of critical brain development? Dr. Madsen shares these insights and more, drawing from his extensive background in functional neurology and clinical practice treating children with developmental challenges.

10 May 202214. Ep. 3 of Airway Answers: Expanding Your Breath of Knowledge with Dr. Bill Hang01:24:38

Dr Bill Hang graduated from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and the University of Minnesota Orthodontic program where he briefly taught orthodontics. After about 7 years of having a traditional orthodontic practice, he became dissatisfied with the faces he was producing and set out to learn and develop techniques that would produce the best facial balance. Bill then became aware of the significant positive affects some of his treatments had on the airway. This opened up a whole new aspect of orthodontics - maximizing the airway for ALL orthodontic patients and specifically treating patients with sleep disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Hang, a staunch advocate of Myofunctional Therapy, emphasizes the importance of optimal oral posture for facial and airway development. Renowned locally and globally, he's received the AAPMD Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in airway optimization. Passionate about OrthO2Health, Dr. Hang offers two mentorships: Hang E.C.H.O.™ (Early Childhood Health-Centered Orthodontic) and Hang E.R.R.S.™ (Extraction Retraction Regret Syndrome).

About Our Guest:

Ronda Holman is The Airway Champion (@the_airway_champion) at least that’s how you’ll know her if you’re on TikTok!

She is a 23 year US Airforce trained dental assistant who has spent her entire career looking at airway disorders and their negative effects on the mouth. She has dedicated the last 4 years to helping patients and strangers understand the negative effects of oral breathing on their oral health. Ronda not only has a passion to help people discover the root cause of so many non-communicable diseases, but she grew up with an undiagnosed airway disorder herself. After connecting the signs to the symptoms it is her mission to help others learn to see the signs so they can advocate for themselves. Many people do not understand the biomechanics of breathing. Nor do they understand the detrimental effects over-breathing/mouth breathing has on sleep quality. Ronda had extraction retraction orthodontics completed when she was 12 years old. She was diagnosed with upper airway resistance syndrome when she was 37 years old. Ronda then made a choice to either live with struggling to breathe during sleep every night and continue to watch her oral health decline or make a change to improve her airway health. She shares her passion every day to help people understand the difference between sleep and quality sleep and its inter-relationship between airway health and breathing.

17 Aug 202222. Ep. 5 - The Beauty of Breathing - The Importance of Nasal Breathing and Rhinomanometry00:39:47

In this episode, Dr. Martha Cortes and Dr. Jenny Hobson will be interviewing Dr. Karen Parker Davidson, RN, an expert in rhinomanometry. Rhinomanometry measures air pressure and the rate of airflow during breathing. These measurements are then used to calculate nasal airway resistance which is important in the field of airway treatment. So many of us don’t realize that our noses are actually the problem, and we need to work on improving the ability to breathe out of it.

Many of us have a bend in our nose called a deviated septum which narrows our nasal passages. Slowly but surely, this causes us to breathe through our mouth and the beginning of an airway compromise. Learn about the history of rhinomanometry, what normal values look like and where to find this testing. Dr. Davidson will review the key output parameters and what the data means.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Dr. Karen Davidson has held many positions in the medical device industry for more than 25 years, specifically in the ENT and Sleep markets, in addition to more than 30 years of clinical experience including service as a Flight Nurse in the United States Air Force Reserves and committee member for various Otolaryngology meetings. Dr. Davidson serves as the Vice President at GM Instruments, Ltd. with a special interest in and published on the technology of objective nasal measurements, nasal physiology, clinical application, reimbursement, health economics, and health policy. Dr. Davidson is a national speaker for the series “The Nose Knows: Nasal Function and Resistance”.
