Introducing Beauty Island: The beauty podcast with a difference.
00:01:51
If you were relegated to a desert island, which eight beauty products would you take with? We're not talking sunscreen (although that's important too!) but rather the sentimental beauty products that have special memories for you. Like the lipstick your mum used to wear or the perfume that reminds you of the heady days of your teens.
In Beauty Island, host Brittany Stewart chats to notable people inside and outside of the beauty industry about their lives, careers and relationships, bookmarked by the beauty products that have shaped them into who they are today.

Michelle Crossan - YouTuber and Content Creator
01:02:50
Imagine having your makeup touched up by Rihanna. For YouTuber Michelle Crossan, it actually happened.
We're back for another episode of season 2!
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm so excited to bring you more fascinating, nostalgic and inspiring interviews with insiders in the beauty industry.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Before you go into 'Survivor' mode, this doesn't necessarily mean practical products. Rather it's the beauty products they've come across throughout their lives that carry significant stories or memories for them. Think the product that reminds them of their mum, the first beauty product that sparked that lifelong affair or the perfume that instantly reminds them of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is YouTuber and Content Creator, Michelle Crossan.
Since starting her 'real girl' beauty YouTube channel in 2013, Michelle has gained over 150,000 subscribers and more than eight million video views.
She is warm, kind, very funny and extremely candid. We talk about her childhood in Ireland, moving to Australia with an (ex) boyfriend, the sad circumstances that led to her starting her first beauty blog, meeting Rihanna, her thoughts on influencers that sell out and her bold move regarding the waste involved with PR packages - did it pay off? Michelle is also so open in talking about how her attitude to exercise and loving herself has changed over the last few years - I found this really inspiring - and recently being diagnosed with ADHD. It's raw, honest and hopefully a conversation you find helpful. If you love Michelle's beauty content, you'll love getting to know her even better.
Plus, of course, all her chosen products including the cult Estee Lauder serum that's really worth every single cent.

Lisa De Sanctis - See Want Shop, Lifestyle Influencer

The more-than-moisturiser so good Lisa has her husband and half his friends on it too...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
Before I get into today's episode; a quick check-in. Obviously, we are in a very pivotal and strange period at the moment, with the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. It's a scary time. There's a lot of uncertainty except for one thing; it has the potential to have a knock on effect on everything and that's in addition to the primary concern of health. In Australia, we're lucky to be at a stage where we have some control or opportunity to affect what happens next. I've been toying with how to approach and talk about beauty in times like this. And this is what I've come up with. I'm aware of perspective - beauty falls way, way down the list of importance when your health, your family and friends and your livelihood is threatened. But I also know that in times like this, it can also be helpful to have moments and opportunities of escape, however briefly. Beauty Island will continue for the rest of the season, hopefully to entertain or give you a little breather from reality. The majority of the season's interviews were done before what's currently happening, so you (probably) won't hear mention of it in the episodes. Please stay safe, informed (but not overloaded) and look out for loved ones, friends, and if you can, strangers and those who are more vulnerable too. I'll be doing the same and thinking of everybody - hopefully this will be a time that will inspire community not division.

Today, my guest is Lisa De Sanctis, aka SeeWantShop, Australian travel, fashion and lifestyle influencer.
What started as a hobby blog when she was living in London, has since turned into a full time job for the former women's health physio, with now almost 300,000 followers eager to see and her take on what to wear, what to do and where to shop.
We talked the struggle to not define your worth by your follower count when your business does, positive body image on Instagram, the effects of being reposted by Khloe Kardashian and the affordable lip/eye/cheek multipurpose product she loves for travelling.
Thank you for everyone who entered the competition last week - I'll be getting in contact with the winner this week!

BONUS: Your Guide to Gifting Fragrance
00:20:10
What's the difference between cologne, eau de toilette and eau de parfum?
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island.
The special mini series of Beauty Isolation will be dropping from next week, where I talk to beauty friends new and old about their beauty routines in quarantine.
Today I'm excited to share a little bonus episode with you all about fragrance and gifting fragrance. I got on the phone with expert Ruth Stonier, National Training Manager at Clarins Fragrance & Beauty, who's job it is to discover, train, educate and recommend the best fit fragrances. It applies to finding one for yourself, and for a gift, but of course may be particularly helpful with Mother's Day coming up.
We talked about why perfume is so strongly linked to memories, the difference between cologne and eau de toilette and eau de parfum, and where do you start when it comes to working out the right perfume to gift?
*WIN* - I also have a perfume prize pack to give away for you or for you mum. Enter here: https://mailchi.mp/cc7f4e9dd51f/beautyislandfragrance

The World's First Makeup Museum - Co-Founder, Doreen Bloch
00:28:10
A museum dedicated to makeup is opening soon.. what's involved and why, given makeup's 10,000 year history, is it only happening now?
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. The premise of Beauty Island is simple - Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
But, after all that, today is something a little bit different.
In this episode, you will hear my interview with co-founder of the world's first makeup museum, opening up in New York in May, Doreen Bloch.
I was originally going to drop this as a bonus episode but the conversation ended up so interesting and really went to the heart of what Beauty Island is about that I wanted to instead release this as a main episode. So please excuse the slightly different format.
A note - thank you for all your feedback last season on phone versus in person interviews. Hopefully you'll notice most of this season has and will be in person but as Doreen is in the US and I am in Melbourne and I really wanted to talk to her about this venture, this is a rare exception.
I won't give too much away, but in my chat with Doreen we talked about how on earth a museum dedicated to the history of makeup has not existed before, where on earth you start given makeup's 10,000 year history, some of the amazing pieces and cultural history she's discovered along the way - like why a lipstick is called a lipstick bullet, that blew my mind - and of course, when you can visit yourself.
The Founder of Poshly Cosmetics Founder & Beauty Expert, Doreen is someone who knows the makeup space intimately, working in the industry, providing consumer insights to some of the biggest beauty brands. So she was the perfect person, as she put it, to beauty nerd out together.
If you enjoy this or any episode of Beauty Island, I have a little favour to ask. If you aren't, please subscribe, rate five stars and if you're listening on Apple Podcasts, write a little review about why you enjoy the podcast. It takes just a few seconds and means the world to me. Or you can recommend to a friend! Or a casual acquaintance! Or a total stranger standing beside you on the bus. And you can take a screenshot, share it on your Instagram story and tag me @beautyislandpodcast so I can see where you're listening.
Now, over to Doreen. Enjoy.

Why you should try a stick foundation...(and put chilli oil on everything!)
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.

Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today, my guest is Jessica Nguyen - home cook, food influencer, recipe creator, and so-called Shameless head chef thanks to her weekly recipe in their newsletter. But while you may know her from her meteoric rise as a food influencer - gaining over 45,000 followers in six months - Jess is an experienced marketing, PR and influencer manager with over 10 years experience in the beauty industry at brands like L'Oreal and Mecca.
We talked about the secrets of influencer marketing, what it's like when the tables turn and you become an influencer yourself, how a focaccia marked the start of a journey for a whole new career after redundancy, why chilli oil is good on everything and, among many great recommendations from her beauty days, the case for trying a stick foundation.

A little note from me.
00:04:06
Yes, that's it for Season 2 of Beauty Island!
We're taking a little (ok, well a little bit more than a little) break until August as I do the classic mid-twenties thing and go travelling for a few months around Europe to 'find myself'. (Just kidding. Kinda.)
I appreciate it's quite a while to go without a podcast but rest assured when Beauty Island returns it will be for another big season of incredible local and international guests. (And in fact, if there's someone you'd love to hear on the podcast now is the time to tell me! Email me beautyislandpodcast@gmail.com or send me a message on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast.)
Thank you so much for your support of the podcast so far. We've hit the charts, been featured by Apple and nominated for an Australian Podcast Award. But the biggest achievement for me is knowing that you enjoy what I'm creating and your messages and reviews make me grin like an idiot. So thank YOU!
Until we return, why not scroll through the feed and listen (or re-listen!) to episodes from the last two seasons? Whether you want career advice from the women who've built big beauty brands, want to know what it's really like to be a top Beauty or Fashion Editor, are after the goss about influencers and beauty bloggers, or fancy taking a peek into the makeup kits of professional makeup artists, there are so many great guests to choose from.
In the meantime, you can also follow Beauty Island on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast. And if you're interested in the beauty side of my travels (the products I'm using etc and maybe a cheeky scenery shot) you can follow me on my personal beauty Instagram account @brittanybeautybts.
Thank you and until next time... bye bye!

Jules Sebastian - Stylist, TV Presenter, Philanthropist

What's it like to meet your soulmate at 14 years old? Jules Sebastian shares...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.

Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is stylist and TV presenter, Jules Sebastian. If the name sounds familiar, yes, she is wife of that well known Aussie singer Guy Sebastian, but if that's all you know about her then you are in for a real treat with this episode.
Jules is a TV presenter, stylist, has combined the two with two makeover shows MTV's Style Me and Channel 7's Bringing Sexy Back, host of her own fantastic YouTube interview series Tea With Jules and is also a philanthropist with The Sebastian Foundation which she set up with her husband. She shares some of the incredible work they're doing for families, and particularly victims of domestic violence (*content warning*).
We talk about the moment she discovered that doing all the creative things she loved could be her career and working incredibly hard to make it happen, the imposter syndrome she still feels to this day, the perfume that always gets her compliments from strangers and what it's like meeting your soulmate at 14 years old. How she talks about her relationship with Guy, well, I think we both got a bit teary!
She's also so genuine, kind and downright lovely. Enjoy.

Today, my guest is Felicity Harley, journalist, award-winning launch editor of both Women's Health Australia and WHIMN and author of the brilliant 2020 book, Balance and other BS: How To Hold It Together When You're Doing It All. You also might have seen her on morning TV show Sunrise, on which she's been appearing as a commentator for over 10 years.
We spoke a little earlier this year about her first job as entertainment editor at Girlfriend magazine in the era of spice girls, britney, christina, destiny's child... and yes she did enjoy a harbour cruise with Beyonce, the rise of wellness as a commodity, the mental load and giving up the quest for balance, and the skincare product she swears by for getting TV or red carpet ready. Oh, and you may hear references to her husband Tom when we talk about balance in relationships, yes that is Tom Harley, former AFL player and current Sydney Swans CEO - and the story of how they met which she shares is great too.
Felicity's brilliant book Balance and Other BS is available to buy and read now:
A note: a few things have already changed since this conversation; both WHIMN and Women's Health Australia have now unfortunately closed - we do touch a little on the state and future of the magazine industry given Felicity's career has spanned both print and digital.

Erika Geraerts - Frank Body and Fluff Founder
01:03:30
In episode five of Beauty Island, host Brittany Stewart sits down with Erika Geraerts.
You might not know her name, but you definitely know what she's done. Erika was one of the founders of Frank Body, the coffee scrub beauty brand that's gone on to revolutionise the beauty space and make millions in the process. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. At just 29, Erika has done more than most people do in a lifetime - including founding a content agency, writing a children's book, opening a cafe, and launching two unique and successful beauty brands, including her latest baby, Fluff. It's unlike anything else you'll find in the beauty world - and no, not a speck of millennial pink in sight.
Erika welcomed me into the very cool Fluff showroom-cum-office in Melbourne. We talked about her career, forging your own path, the logistics of launching a business, the definition of success, and the problems with the beauty industry as it currently is. We also talked about her decision to leave Frank and launch Fluff, why it's so different, why she ditched millenials for centennials (that's 16-22 year olds) as her ideal customer, her tattoos and much more. I hope you find our chat as fascinating as I did. (And her special products are so unique and interesting!)

Sarah Davidson - Creator, Seize The Yay and Co-Founder, Matcha Maiden
01:11:34
From high-flying lawyer to (equally) high-flying 'funtrepreneur'...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.

My usual disclaimer in these strange and unprecedented times; this interview was recorded well before Corona became a common word in our vernacular, so I hope you a) are doing ok and b) enjoy it as a virus respite.
Today, my guest is Sarah Davidson, co-founder of Matcha Maiden and creator of Seize the Yay. Incredibly driven and articulate, Sarah has already had a number of careers. She doesn't do things by halves - and the results speak for themselves.
Sarah shared her journey from ballerina to lawyer to entrepreneur to so-called 'funtrepreneur' and the products that have marked her beauty journey along the way. We talked about being adopted and how that's helped shape her identity, how illness led to the discovery and foundation of mega successful Matcha Maiden, her sensible and reassuring advice about taking the leap into the unknown, and the best foundation for acne-prone skin she's been wearing for 15 years.
She's interviewed some incredibly successful and inspiring people on her brilliant podcast Seize The Yay, but I hope you'll find, like me, Sarah herself is equally as inspiring as as any of them. As we're forced to stay home and maybe reflect on our lives and career, I hope you'll find comfort or a spark in her story.
As always if you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate five stars and write a review. And if you're listening, share a screenshot on your Instagram story and tag me @BEAUTYISLANDPODCAST so I can see!

Why you should make time for gua sha...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and this is another episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island.
Normally, I ask my guests about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the 8 products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. Twice a week, we'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as conversations around self-care, how they're going, and what they're most looking forward to.
Today my guest is Lauren Meisner, co-founder of Gen Z focussed beauty and pop culture site, Centennial Beauty. There are few people who get the youtube and influencer space more than her, which is why I'm a big fan of Centennial Beauty and their accompanying podcast Renegade. If you're after smart analysis and breakdowns of tiktok and the issues and conversations around viral stars and influencer culture, it's a must-listen. We talked about working out in quarantine, having to reschedule her Italian destination wedding and the satisfying mask that will get off the gunk in your face.
If you enjoy Beauty Isolation, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend.
Now over to Lauren. Enjoy.

Nadine Baggott - YouTuber and Celebrity Beauty Editor (UK)
01:14:54
Is neck cream a complete waste of money? Is the science or the marketing of a beauty product more important? And what's the foolproof eyeliner Nadine's been using for years? Listen to find out...
Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
I'm very excited to share today's episode with celebrity beauty editor, TV presenter, YouTuber, and one of my favourite beauty content creators, Nadine Baggott . As I mentioned last week, it's one I did when I was in London. I slid into Nadine's DMs, not expecting to hear back, and within a few hours we'd set a date to meet up at her agent's office to chat.
In a world of 20-something beauty youtubers, Nadine, in her mid 50s, does beauty for grown ups, as she calls it. After 18 years as a celebrity beauty editor at Hello Magazine - and does she have some stories including being told to fuck off by Kate Moss and sued by Naomi Campbell - frustrated by the slow uptake of print media to the digital space, she started a youtube channel. She now has over 100,000 YouTube subscribers and is represented by Gleam Futures, the same talent management as Zoella, Pixiwoo, Louise Pentland, and many more. It was in their office we met, a bustling place near Tottenham Court Road.
Nadine is tall, confident, cool and utterly charming. You can see why she's such a brilliant journalist - warm, open, funny and able to instantly put you at ease.
This is a slightly longer episode than normal but for good reason. We covered so many topics in the beauty industry, with Nadine offering a no BS, upfront take on it all from why she hates the term 'clean' beauty and the battle between science and marketing in the beauty industry to whether expensive and cheap makeup is all coming from the same factory. Bet your ears pricked up at that!
She shares the 8 (plus a few more!) beauty products that have a special memory for her, why neck creams are a complete waste of money and the face product that's confidence in a tube.

Shev Kelly - Global Makeup Artist at Napoleon Perdis
00:59:27
Did you know makeup artists rarely get paid to do makeup for celebrities? And that while doing a Vogue cover may bring you serious industry credit, it will barely make a difference to your bank account?
In episode four of Beauty Island, host Brittany Stewart sits down with makeup artist Shev Kelly to discover these and many more industry gems, tips and stories.
Siobhan (Shev) Kelly is the Global Makeup Artist for Napoleon Perdis. Over 14 years she's worked her way up from the store to her current multi-faceted role. She's bright, bubbly, a whole heap of fun and of course incredibly talented at what she does.
We spoke about getting her break into the industry, why Instagram makeup won't take you far in the fashion world, what happened when she did Usher's makeup, the truth about working backstage at local and international fashion weeks, plus her best tips for the perfect red lip and lots more brilliant makeup tips and recommendations.
She's a favourite of mine, so I hope you enjoy.

Sarah Tarca - Beauty Editor, Former Editor of Girlfriend, Beauty Director of Marie Claire Australia
00:56:01
Religiously read Girlfriend magazine as a teen? You're about to fan girl with this week's guest, Sarah Tarca.
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more and their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today I'm talking to editor Sarah Tarca. Chances are if you picked up a magazine in the last 10 years, you've probably read her work. And, if like me, as a teen you were a regular reader of Girlfriend magazine, then you'll recognise her immediately, as the beauty editor and later editor of the iconic Aussie youth magazine. She later became the Beauty Director of Marie Claire before making the incredible decision in her thirties to pack up her life and travel the world with her boyfriend, indefinitely. This wasn't traditional backpacking holiday though - the pair became digital nomads, working and travelling around the globe. That was about two and a half years. As I sit down with Sarah today a few things have changed - boyfriend now fiance and the proud parents of gorgeous three month old Yuki.
We talked about the lengths she went to chase her dream job, what she learnt packing it all in to go from beauty editor to backpacker, the power of teen mags and how it's changed and why a red lip is more than just a statement - it can be a lifeline.
One more thing. Reaching out and meeting Sarah was a special moment for me. You see, as a 13 year old from the UK, just moved to Australia - same language but totally foreign in almost every other respect, I was one of those teens for which mags like Girlfriend were a saviour. It was a window into what Aussie teens were watching, wearing, talking about. It gave me common ground and it helped me belong, and I don't know how many issues I religiously read Sarah's beauty columns in. I hope you enjoy.

BONUS: Five Favs - Sharon Farrell
00:09:16
Yes, it's another mini bonus episode of Beauty Island #FiveFavs!
I love hearing the products my guests in Beauty Island main episodes pick for the nostalgic, personal and often very relatable stories behind them. But I've had a few comments from you saying you'd ALSO love to know the products that Beauty Island castaways are using on their faces now. And because I listen and take on all your great feedback, Five Favs was born!
It's a bitesize episode where, in a quick-fire round, I ask my guests about their five favourite beauty products from a specific category, like foundation or eye product. Then, there'll also be a piece of wisdom shared - a thoughtful answer to a relevant question about anything from self-esteem to social media.
For this episode of Five Favs, I have my guest from earlier this week, makeup artist, YouTuber, and founder of the Online Makeup School, Sharon Farrell.
Starting on the Benefit counter of her home in Ireland, Sharon started her YouTube channel in 2010. Now, she's had over 35 million video views, over a quarter of a million youtube subscribers, and a very gorgeous baby, Roisin.
She shares her five favourite products, including the smokey-eye mascara that doesn't budge. She also shares her thoughts on the "drama" that dominates the YouTube scene.
I hope you enjoy.

Laura Henshaw - Co-Founder, Keep It Cleaner
01:00:37
The life-changing fitness advice that will change the way you approach working out...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today, my guest is Laura Henshaw, Co-founder of Keep It Cleaner. Keep It Cleaner, or KIC as it's affectionately referred to, is one of Australia's leading health and fitness programs aimed at women. The former model, law student and influencer founded it as an e-book with fellow model and best friend Steph Claire Smith, and in five years has grown it to a multifaceted business, including healthy treats you can find in the supermarket, that focusses on not just exercise or food, but health as a whole.
You'll find no mention of diet or weight loss - a definitive decision made by the pair's own experience in the modelling industry where appearance and worth being dangerously linked.
If you're one of Laura's quarter of a million followers on Instagram alone, no doubt you'll no doubt have an idea of a passionate, bubbly, beautiful and success person. From this interview, I can confirm it's entirely accurate. Positive, honest, kind and generous, Laura welcomed me into her Melbourne home with open arms to explore her relationship with beauty, health, relationships and a hobby that turned into a lucrative business.
We talked about her struggle to separate her value from her looks in the early years of modelling, dealing with the trolling that comes with having a public profile, finding the motivation to put your health first, the go-to sheet mask she swears by for moments of self-care, and her secret Dj-ing past.
She was candid, honest and full of valuable advice and insights that we could all be reminded of.
As always if you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate five stars and write a review. And if you're listening, share a screenshot on your Instagram story and tag me @BEAUTYISLANDPODCAST so I can see!
Now, over to Laura. Enjoy.

Beauty Isolation: Maddie Edwards, Content Creator and Beauty Therapist

Skin positivity, waxing nostrils and the facial cleansing device worth investing in...
Today my guest is Maddie Edwards, content creator, beauty therapist, and owner of Maddie Edwards Beauty. We talked about eczema and acne in Isolation and beyond, waxing nostrils, and the alien-looking facial device that is as good as the hype.
She's one of my favourite people to follow on Instagram and YouTube because of her candidness about skin, leading a refreshing conversation and reminder that it isn't always the pore-less pictures we so often see on social media.
If you enjoy Beauty Isolation, please rate and review on Apple Podcasts. It takes less than 60 seconds and means the world to me. I'd love to hear your beauty isolation and favourites - come and chat on Instagram over at @beautyislandpodcast, and play along - share your favourites in the Beauty Isolation Instagram Story graphic saved in highlights..

Kate Morris - Founder, Adore Beauty
00:52:11
Kate Morris was just 21 when she had her million dollar idea - Australia's first online beauty e-commerce site, Adore Beauty. On this episode, discover how she did it and her own journey through beauty.
This doesn't necessarily mean practical products but rather the beauty products they've come across throughout their lives that carry significant stories, power or nostalgia for them. The ones that make up a little bit of who they are. Along the way we find out more and their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Kate Morris, founder of online beauty retailer, Adore Beauty. At a time when we're obsessed with lady bosses - a controversial term we do talk about in this episode - on paper Kate seems like the ultimate one in a million entrepreneur. And in a way she is - at just 21 years old, not yet graduated from uni, while she was working on the Clarins beauty counter in a department store she realised that there were better and more enjoyable ways customers were looking for to buy their beauty products. Online. Except it was 1999 and it just wasn't a thing that was done in Australia. Kate went for it and nearly 20 years later Adore Beauty stocks established and emerging beauty brands like Dermalogica, Bobbi Brown, The Ordinary, Salt by Hendrix and Iconic London.
But there's so much more to her story. Like how she almost threw in the towel in the first year, the hard work you often don't see shown on social media, the industry recognition that took a decade and Estee Lauder who said no to being stocked on the site for 14 years.
I sat down with Kate in Adore Beauty's Melbourne offices - and the first thing I noticed was how at 6pm on a Monday we were the only two there. You'll find out the excellent reason why when we chat about work life balance. We also talked about how the beauty industry reacted towards a 21 year old from Tasmania trying to revolutionise the industry (spoiler: not well initially), the $19 multi-purpose balm she takes absolutely everywhere with her, and why it's not ideas that are the most important thing but rather actually executing them. She is generous, brilliant and full of incredibly inspiring advice. I hope you enjoy.

Kelly Baker - Beauty Journalist and Editor - PART 2
00:38:02
This is part 2 of host Brittany Stewart's chat with former Beauty and Health Director of the Australian Women's Weekly, Kelly Baker. If you haven't listened to part 1, I recommend scrolling down and doing so, then jumping back to this one.
Name an Aussie publication and Kelly Baker has probably written for them. The journalist and editor has worked for the likes of New Idea, Body and Soul, Shop Til You Drop, the Australian Women's Weekly and Channel Nine, as well as her own beauty website The Beauty Insider.
Kelly tells it like it is. She's seen a lot in her time in the industry. Along with her eight chosen products, we spoke about the hey days of magazines and what the industry is like now, why fashion is bitchier than beauty, the politics of the term 'anti-ageing', the taboo around botox and fillers and the reality of being a single parent and writing about it on the internet.
She's had a fascinating career and has so many great insights. I hope you enjoy.

Jo Hall - Nine Network News Presenter and Journalist
00:58:22
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Nine Network News presenter, journalist Jo Hall. Now if you're in Victoria, you may recognise her from the Nine Local News bulletins at 6pm each weeknight. And she's been a familiar fixture in Australia's living rooms at Nine for four decades this year, since starting as a cadet with the network in 1979.
It's been - and continues to be - an incredible and enduring career, and Hall was actually also the first woman to win the prestigious Thorn Award, a national award for journalism in 1990 for her report on the siege at Hawthorn Kindergarten.
I went into the Nine studios (which is exciting, even for a working journo!) to chat to Jo about her 40 years of journalism and how the attitude towards women on TV has changed, why her hairstyle is part of her contract, raising her four children as a single mum, and the surprising drugstore dupe she's found to replace her signature designer perfume after it was discontinued, plus so much more.
Jo was so interesting, inspiring and open to talk to.
If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe to the podcast if you're not already, rate five stars and if you have a spare 30 seconds, write a review! It means the world when I read your lovely comments about why you love listening to Beauty Island and helps other people find the podcast.

What does it take to launch not one but three successful businesses? And write a book or two along the way?
Lisa Teh is the founder of Australian fashion and lifestyle blog Couturing, digital marketing agency Tailor Group, co-author of two books, Australian Style and Australian Beauty and most recently co-founder of beauty brand 101 Lifestyle which recently launched in Mecca.
Oh and an influencer with a particular love for white dresses.
She is lovely.
She invited me to her instagram-worthy Melbourne-home where we ate pizza and talked about her career change from tax to fashion, taking the leap in launching a business or idea, the value of a great business partner, eloping to Paris, having Toni Maticevski design your wedding dress, whether Australia is making improvements when it comes to diversity in the beauty industry, carving a career in digital and the people and beauty products that have shaped her story. She even sent me home with a ziplock bag of the hair mask she recommended to try myself!

Ava Matthews - Co-founder of Ultra Violette
00:55:44
Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
It's been a while. A few months to be exact. As I alluded to in the last episode of season two, I was taking a little break. In fact, i quit my job, packed my bags and went travelling for three and a half months around Europe. To be cliched, it was one of those trips of a lifetime. Spent in the company of old friends, new friends, family but largely myself. I ate and drank my way through France, Italy and Spain. I wandered for days around the galleries of Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris and London, soaking up art, fashion and beauty history from Mary Quant, Yves Saint Laurent, Helena Rubenstein, Gustav Klimt, Rodin and Van Gogh. I even may have done a few Beauty Island interviews along the way.
But after a summer of self-indulgence, self-discovery and cultural exploration, on the one year anniversary of launch this passion project podcast, I am back and so excited to kick off season three.
A reminder of exactly what we do here.
Today my guest is Ava Matthews. Now, this is an interview I did before I left. But as we firmly leap into Spring with Summer more than a glimmer of warm hope in the distance, in Australia at least, it's the perfect time to releawse it.
Where to begin with Ava? She's had such an interesting career - from working in beauty PR to developing product at Mecca Cosmetica to co-founding skinscreen (that's sunscreen and skincare FYI) brand Ultra Violette. If you follow any Aussie beauty bloggers on Instagram, you'll probably have seen it on your feed as everyone is raving about this sunscreen disrupter.
I actually used their Supreme Screen sunscreen every day while I was in Europe, and can say hand on heart its one of the best facial sunscreens I've ever tried. It also works brilliantly as a primer under makeup too.
Anyway, enough about me. In this episode, Ava talks about her slightly different childhood growing up with a beauty editor mum and fashion photographer dad - after all it's not everyone who wakes up to see Naomi Campbell in their garden! - working in PR in New York and finding out it's nothing likes Samantha Jones made it out to be, why buying perfume on holiday is always a good idea and the story behind co-founding latest venture, Ultra Violette. Plus, much more.
If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe to the podcast if you're not already, rate five stars and write a review on Apple Podcasts. It helps other people find us and means I can keep on creating Beauty Island for you!
Now, over to Ava. Enjoy.

Do you really need sheet masks for your bum? And what's the reality of being a beauty expert over 50 on Instagram?
Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.

Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today's episode is the last of my london series that I recorded when i was in the UK the other month. My guest is Jane Cunningham, who you might know as a british beauty blogger. Or rather The British Beauty Blogger.
She has almost 40,000 Instagram followers, with hundreds of thousands of views on the blog she started over a decade ago. She's written for The Guardian, The Financial Times, Metro, The Express and many more.
She very kindly offered to come to me in London when I was staying with my cousins - shoutout to Andy and Miki for letting me turn their living room into a pop up podcast studio!. The sun was shining on an August weekday when we spent an hour on the sofa chatting all things beauty.
We talked how influencer and makeup brand collaborations really work, why red lipstick isn't for her, the ridiculousness of face masks for your bum, and had one of the most interesting discussions I've ever had on the attitude the beauty industry has towards older women and whether it's changing. Plus, she shares her 8 chosen products including the extortionately expensive lip balm that she just can't stop buying.
If you enjoy listening to Beauty island, please subscribe, and rate and review on Apple Podcasts. That really helps me keep making the podcast how you like it and also assists in other people finding us! Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.

Today my guest is comedian, radio host, author and Priceline Ambassador, Tanya Hennessy. You may have heard her voice on radio, seen one of her brilliant videos on social media, or maybe even caught her earlier this year on I'm A Celebrity! Get Me Out Of Here Australia. She went viral seemingly overnight in 2017 after posting a parody video called 'Everyday Makeup Tutorial'. But the story of her career and where she got to today started long before then and in an era obsessed with internet and overnight success, hers is a fascinating one. We talked cutting her own 'Rachel' haircut as a teen, the $12 mascara she claims is better than Dior's, and her funny and refreshing take on the self help genre with her second and brand new book, Help Self, out today.

Today, my guest is visual artist Rosie Kalina. A proud Wemba Wemba and Gunditjmara woman, Rosie is a talented makeup artist, artist, model and entrepreneur - to name just a few strings on her bow. If you're one of her almost 50,000 followers on Instagram, you might recognise her incredibly colourful or glossy eye makeup looks, but that's just a small window into the incredible ideas, conversations and creations Rosie has. She's appeared in Vogue not once but twice this year, worked on a variety of sets and shoots, and the co-founder of Makeup For Mob, a makeup artist collective for and supporting First Nations artists.
We talked about the representation of First Nations people in the beauty industry and beyond, the cult powder for glowing skin and a step-by-step guide into creating a beautiful base, creativity as a tool to explore self expression, identity and start bigger conversation and success, social media and getting caught in the likes.
I'm not supposed to have favourites but this truly has to be up there for me. Rosie is incredible talented, eloquent and has such warmth, and was so generous in her discussion about really important and timely topics and conversations about the beauty industry and representation, her experiences in the industry, and the trappings of social media, as well sharing SO many practical tips and product recommendations that will have you rushing to your makeup bag once the episode has finished.

Alison talked about failing her HSC, getting a foot in the door of the industry, the reality behind her glamorous job in women's lifestyle media, her obsession with launching things, the importance of mentors and mentoring, the problems with the cult of the 'Lady Boss', imposter syndrome, how she manifested her success, her decision to walk away from her 'dream job', spirituality, and - of course - her favourite beauty products. It was a privilege to chat with her and hear her take and advice on a range of subjects. I know I'll be listening through again to write down all her brilliant advice!

Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Genevieve Day, founder of influencer management agency, Day Management. After a successful career in PR, Genevieve was just 24 when she spotted a gap in the market and went out on her own to launch her own business. Now, Day Management reps some of Australia's top influencer talent, and is the first in Australia to launch a podcast arm.
Genevieve is one of the most go-getting and driven people I've ever met. And if you're interested or curious about influencer culture, she is upfront and honest in her answers to all the questions you've secretly wondered but haven't wanted to ask.
I went to Day Management's offices in Melbourne to chat to Gen about how much influencers can really earn, how the landscape has changed since she launched Day Management and what the future may look like, and the $19 black eyeliner that will give you flawless wings.
She also shares a really beautiful and poignant personal story that reminds us why beauty is about so much more than just products.

What's it like to interview the ultimate fashion mag icon, Anna Wintour?
This week's guest spills all.
We're back for season 2!
Today my guest is National Fashion Editor of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, Melissa Singer.
We talked about what it was like to interview US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour (and what the hell do you wear!), why she reckons she has the best fashion media job in Australia and the realities of dating and relationships that you don't see in the rom coms. Melissa talks candidly about breakups, moving back home with your parents and dating again in your late 30s - and why she decided to write about them too.
Plus, her beauty recommendations including the eyeshadow palette everyone should own.

Maria Hatzistefanis - Founder, Rodial and Nip + Fab, Bestselling Author and Podcast Host, How To Be An Overnight Success
00:48:23
What does it really take to be an overnight success? My guest today knows all too well.
Welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.

Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Maria Hatzistefanis. She's the founder of Rodial and Nip + Fab, bestselling author of How To Be An Overnight Success, host of the fantastic podcast, Overnight Success, and her personal Instagram account has over one million followers. Her own overnight success has taken, well, many years.
Being fired from her job in banking and financing turned out to be a blessing in disguise - it was the catalyst for founding high-end beauty brand Rodial, which counts Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone and Jennifer Lopez amongst it's celebrity fans, and is now sold in 20,000 stores in 35 countries. But it took self-funding after she couldn't get investment, five years of hustle, one big risk, and a bottle of snake serum to really take off. Nip + Fab gave Kylie Jenner her first beauty campaign - and the next year she went on to launch Kylie Cosmetics. Coincidence? You decide...
We talk about her beginnings growing up on a remote Greek Island, the reality of being an overnight success, her incredibly honest advice on balancing being a parent and running a successful business that every parent needs to hear, the power of eyebrows and the $35 exfoliating face pads that will change your life - I can personally vouch for them too!
I hope you enjoy.

An exciting announcement that Beauty Island has been nominated for an Australian Podcast Award! Yey! We're a finalist for Best Arts and Culture podcast, with the winner announced Saturday 21st November. So keep your fingers and toes crossed for me, and whether you've listened to one episode or all of them, I just wanted to say thank you to you so much for your support of the podcast.
But enough about that for now! And on to today's episode.
Today my guest is editor and journalist, Gyan Yankovich. Now a little disclaimer that this interview was recorded earlier this year, in May. Now that's a few months in normal times, but in 2020? Well, let's just say a lot has changed. When we recorded, Gyan was living in New York in the midst for a terrifying first wave and strict lockdown. She was also the managing editor of renowned fashion turned culture site, Man Repeller. Since we spoke, there have been a succession of changes - a callout, a redesign and then, most recently, the announcement of the closure of the site. For more context read this. Before that, Gyan moved back to Australia and is now the Managing Editor of Junkee.
If you grew up reading Aussie magazines in the 20teens, you'll no doubt recognise Gyan's face. Born in Bathurst, before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in the glossy world of magazines, Gyan was a beauty editor for the likes of Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly before moving to digital to help form Buzzfeed Australia's founding team. She is brilliant, talented and she has the best and longest natural lashes I have ever seen.
We talked through the mascaras that bookmark her beauty journey, the legend of the office tanning salon for beauty editors, applying foundation with your fingers and what exactly are the Saturday spirals.

My usual disclaimer in these strange and unprecedented times - this interview was recorded before Corona hit, so I hope you can enjoy it as an escape and adventure into something a little lighter.
Today, my guest is Paula Joye, journalist, content creator and founder of The Joye.com, and former editor of some of Australia's top magazines, working across Cleo, Madison, Mode and Shop Til You Drop.
She is brilliant, driven, and in a true reflection of her name, utterly joyful.
I caught up with Paula in Sydney to talk about working in the halcyon years of magazines after getting her start at Vogue, the musical champions that mark the chapters of her life, the shift of power from magazines to social media and the implications of that, particularly bringing up teenage daughters, and among other great recommendations, her go-to face potion for glowing skin and the best mascara for short lashes.
It will also challenge you to look at bumper stickers in a completely new way - you'll have to listen to the end to make full sense of that!

Chrissy Zemura - Hair Stylist & Advocate for Inclusive Hairdressing
00:48:36
The one hair habit the hair expert wants us to stop doing...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today, my guest is Chrissy Zemura, hairstylist, colourist and salon owner of Sydney's Zemura Salon.
She worked in one of Sydney's top salons before launching her own, has had work published in fashion magazines including Marie Claire, and, as a champion of inclusive hairdressing, most recently drawing attention to the fact that caring and styling afro and curly hair is not currently part of the hairdressing curriculum in Australia. That leaves black, Indigenous and people of colour deprived of skilled hair care, with hair left mistreated however well intentioned due to lack of education.
The petition she started that has (updated) currently got over 40,000 signatures and Chrissy, calling for the support of the industry, is making overdue waves to change this. It takes less than a minute to sign: https://bit.ly/2QAIDXo
We talked about her career shift from finance to hairdressing plus a two moves halfway around the world to make it happen, forging a new beauty attitude in an industry built on insecurities, the double standards in anti-ageing conversations, and of course, some must-know hair tips.
If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify. As an independent podcaster, those things really help in growing and sharing the podcast so we can keep on having these beauty conversations.
Now, over to Chrissy. Enjoy.

Nigel Stanislaus - Celebrity Makeup Artist, Former Makeup Director at Maybelline New York Australia
01:00:59
From sniper (almost!) to international celebrity makeup artist... meet Nigel Stanislaus.
Nigel is a makeup artist extraordinaire. He was the Makeup Director for Maybelline New York Australia for over a decade, travelling the world, leading the makeup at local and international Fashion Weeks and working with celebrity clients including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Cindy Crawford, Kendall Jenner, Jess Hart, Ruby ROse, Olivia Newton-John, Melissa George, Sir Bob Geldof and Michael Buble. His work has been published in Elle and L'Officiel, and he's appeared as a judge on Australia's Next Top Model and Asia's Next Top Model. But in his early days, he was told he'd never make it as a makeup artist. He's certainly proved otherwise.
As he embarks on his next chapter after finishing with Maybelline earlier this year, we talked about growing up in Singapore, how he almost became a sniper (yes, really!), how he got his break to become Mr Maybelline, all about the jetsetting life (and the reality of it), learning to not let his career define him, his triumphant 'I showed you!' moment, why he thinks we're in the golden age of makeup, his thoughts on ridiculous beauty trend and Instagram makeup, dealing with trolls, the importance of your self-worth and a lot more. Nigel is so candid and funny and an all-round-beautiful human being - and yes, my first male guest on Beauty Island!
A quick note on this episode - we live quite far apart so met in the middle, at a cafe in Collingwood called South of Johnston. As we were talking, the lunch rush came in so there is a bit of background ambience, for the first half of the episode. When it got too noisy, we moved from the cafe to Nigel's car to finish the conversation. (The glamour of podcasts!) So I do apologise for the background noise for some of it, but hope you don't mind - just lean in and imagine you're sat at the the table with us, enjoying the conversation over coffee and maybe a little sweet treat. Enjoy.
What is Beauty Island? Each episode, beauty journalist Brittany Stewart sits down with a guest to find out about their life, career and the 8 desert island beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them.

Beauty Isolation: Shonee Fairfax, Survivor Australia
00:24:12
When a three week holiday turns into a four month staycation...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and this is the FINAL (!) episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island.
It has been a fascinating insight into how isolation has reshaped and affected our relationship and opinions on beauty and I hope these episodes have helped you reflect on your own, as well as act as little beauty time capsules.
So, I thought it very fitting to end Beauty Isolation with a guest who already has extensive experience living on a remote island, completely isolated form the rest of the world. Today, my guest is two-time Survivor AU contestant, Shonee Fairfax.
Living between Noosa and London, Shonee appeared on Season 3 and the recent All Star seasons of Survivor Australia. We talked about the best sunscreen she's ever found, how she kept up her skincare regimen on the island, and why it pays to try beauty minis before you splurge on the full size.
If you enjoy Beauty Isolation, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. I'll be taking a little break and be back in August with a brand new season of Beauty Island. In the meantime, find me on Instagram @brittanybeautybts.
Now, over to Shonee. Enjoy.

BONUS: Five Favs - Jules Sebastian
00:12:42
We're mixing things up a little this week to mark the official halfway mark of Beauty Island Season Two.
This week I'll be dropping two Five Favs bonus episodes with two of the most popular guests from this season so far. First up? Jules Sebastian - stylist and TV presenter.
If you haven't listened to her full episode from last week, I highly recommend it! In that, she shared the eight beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for her. In Five Favs, we take a closer look at some of the products she loves for everyday - and it's a lot more low maintenance than you might expect!

~~~~~
Deck the halls and jingle your... bells because this podcast is about to get real festive
Welcome to A Christmas Binge, your new favourite Christmas listening tradition.
Last year, as a podcast fanatic, I desperately wanted to find something festive to add to my podcast rotation in December to get me in the mood. (Because playing Michale Buble's Christmas album on repeat during the day just wasn't enough). I couldn't find anything, so this year I made the decision to make it myself. Christmas goodwill or purely selfish, you decide.
A Christmas Binge is all about celebrating the spirit of the season by chatting to interesting people to find out how they celebrate. Each episode, I'll sit down with someone and ask them about their Christmas Binges - the show or film they watch religiously to get them in the festive mood, their other Christmas Binge in terms of what goes on the dinner table come Christmas Day and they eat, and of course, their unique Christmas traditions.
Episodes will drop each week in the lead up to Christmas to get you in the mood. We'll talk Christmas films and TV specials, the foods we love and love to hate, memories of Christmas past and nosey in on their sometimes wonderful and often wacky Christmas traditions.
Whether you're obsessed with Christmas as me, or you couldn't care less, I hope you'll join me and my guests as we reminisce and discuss and maybe get into a slightly heated argument about the best Christmas film of all time - (yes, the right answer is The Holiday).
A Christmas Binge, your new favourite podcast this December, out now. Search "A Christmas Binge" on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and follow the Christmas meme instagram account @achristmasbinge.
Gemma Watts - Beauty Writer, Influencer and Podcast Host
01:02:21
In episode three of Beauty Island, host Brittany Stewart sits down with Gemma Watts.
Gemma is a beauty writer, influencer, MC and host of fellow Aussie beauty podcast, the Glow Journal podcast.
In a sea of fluffy beauty reviews, Gemma is a breath of fresh air. She's sarcastic, in the best way. After writing for fashion website Couturing and L'Oreal Paris Australia, she launched her own content agency two years ago, working with big brands like Simone Perele, Mecca and Myer.
We talked about her love of (good!) fake tans, launching her own business, why she quit YouTube, her exciting new podcast, why she welcomes the term 'influencer', the rule she has before she reviews any beauty product and why she never wants to feel comfortable.
She's intelligent and hilarious. I hope you enjoy.
A foundation actually saved Michelle's life once. No, that's not an exaggeration. The beauty blogger, better known as LabMuffin Beauty Science has a PhD in chemistry, which she uses to give a unique, entertaining and informative reviews and articles on your favourite beauty products. With over 60,000 followers on Instagram alone (and a blog, series of e-books and a YouTube channel to boot) she's the one you go-to for scientific-based evidence and explanations of bold beauty claims, myths and confusing and complex ingredients.
We talked about the beauty myth that is absolute BS, the claim brands make that makes her blood boil, how a MAC foundation literally saved her life (it's a brilliant story!), diversity in the beauty industry (or lack thereof), her struggles to achieve unicorn pastel hair until the invention of olaplaex, the most exciting innovations we're seeing in the beauty space, the difference between chemical and physical sunscreens, whether natural products are actually better for you, how Donald Trump is boosting the self-care skincare industry (yes, really!) and how pole classes have helped her love her body. You'll definitely learn something new from this episode - I know I did!
Maeva Heim - Founder, Bread Beauty Supply
00:57:00
Welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today's my guest is Maeva Haim, marketer, podcaster and founder of soon-to-be released haircare brand Bread Beauty Supply.
We talked about her change in career from law to creative, the link between hair and identity, progress and diversity in beauty, and given Maeva is the co host of Reality Check, a reality TV podcast, we touched on a little Love Island too.
She came to my house on a boiling hot day when the air con wasn't working, so props to her first for that. Her voice is incredibly calming and I found her attitude to creativity and business and for want of a better word, the hustle of getting stuff done, so inspiring. I think you will too.
Please subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts for eternal good hair days.
How much do you really know about sunsafety and melanoma?
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Today my guest is beauty expert and co-founder of the #CallTimeOnMelanoma initiative, Lisa Patulny. Now a freelance beauty editor, content creator and consultant, Lisa was the Beauty Editor at Shop Til You Drop, Famous magazine and Byrdie, and went on to become Senior editor, Byrdie and My Domaine Australia at Allure Media. (And in a nice tie to last week's Five Favs, counts Amy Starr as a mentor!)
We talk about what a career in beauty is really like, bouncing back from being made redundant, sunscreen and sunsafety misconceptions she's busting as part of #CallTimeOnMelanoma and how that incredible initiative came about, the secrets behind her perfect beachy waves, and the cheap exfoliating trick anyone with dry lips needs to know. Lisa is smart, passionate and on a side note, has probably the most glowy skin I've ever seen in real life.
Today my guest is Founder of Bondi-based natural fragrance house Recreation Beauty and former Cosmo and Cleo editor, Nedahl Stelio.
We talk about her obsession with glitter working as a beauty editor at Girlfriend magazine, the surprising rules (or lack of) that exist when it comes to disclosing fragrance ingredients, how her struggle to get pregnant led her to natural beauty and the $19.95 drugstore mascara she loves. BONUS: Five Favs - Amy Starr
00:12:51
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island!
As I mentioned in Tuesday's episode, to mark the halfway point of season two, instead of a normal beauty island episode, this week we have two bonus Five Favs from two of my guests so far. Jules Sebastian was earlier this week and today, is former ELLE Beauty Director Amy Starr.
As you might know by now - or maybe you don't! - my name is Brittany Stewart and I'm the voice inside your ears aka the host of Beauty Island. In each main episode, I ask a special guest about the eight beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. But, in Five Favs, the focus is on the beauty products in their makeup bags they're loving right now.
Amy Starr is the former Beauty and Lifestyle Director of ELLE Australia. Her main episode dropped a few weeks ago, so just scroll down a little on your feed if you haven't listened to that already. In Five Faves, she talks about nearly-always-sold-out foundation alternative she loves, and why you should never apply a serum to a dry face. This was one piece of beauty advice that blew my mind. As someone with over a decade of experience at Australia's top magazines, I couldn't not ask about where she thinks there's still a future for print magazines.
If you enjoy the podcast, you can subscribe to make sure you never miss an episode. And if you really like it, please consider rating five stars and writing a review about why you love Beauty Island. It helps other people find the podcast and therefore allows me to keep making it!
Enjoy.
Today, my guest is model, journalist and presenter Jessica Vander Leahy. The founder of Project Womenkind and the creator of podcast The Affirmation Project, Jess has so many strings to her bow, is smart, funny and extremely talented. We talked about taking a softer approach to skin and saving those stingy serums, the body positive campaign she started that went viral, tokenism in the Australian modelling industry, her on-hand in-flight essentials, and why it's up to all of us to create the media we want to see.
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and this is another episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island.
Normally, I ask my guests about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the 8 products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. Twice a week, we'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as conversations around self-care, how they're going, and what they're most looking forward to.
Today my guest is journalist and founder of Shameless Media, Michelle Andrews. Shameless Podcast has been downloaded over 10 million times, with hundreds of thousands of people each week pressing play to hear Michelle and co-founder Zara McDonald give their smart take on pop culture. As well as being a brilliantly talented writer and podcaster, Michelle is also a former colleague and very good friend, so it was so lovely to chat (remotely) about beauty and isolation.
We talked about isolation skin, the quarantine-life-changing hair product tiding her over while she can't visit the hairdressers, the reality of being productive during a global pandemic, and her beautiful newfound appreciation for time spent with her siblings.
If you enjoy the podcast, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. I'd love to hear your beauty isolation and favourites - come and chat on Instagram over at @beautyislandpodcast.
We talked what it's like launching a new brand amidst a global pandemic, how a skateboarding accident as a child gave her a rude crash into beauty, the natural deodorant she swears by, and she reflects on a particularly pivotal time in her life where she sold her business, had her third child and was diagnosed with breast cancer in the space of just a few months.
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. And this is season four!
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today, my guest is Nawal Sari, Modest Fashion and beauty influencer and content creator. She's actually the youngest Beauty Island guest I've had to date, just 21, but she's already built herself a powerful platform, covering beauty, fashion and faith for over 120,000 Instagram followers and creating content for Nike and The Iconic.
We talked about becoming a modest fashion influencer, tokenism versus diversity in fashion and beauty media, grappling with identity and her muslim faith, and walking in The Iconic Runway with her idol and muslim model Halima Aden.
Plus, she shares the $12.95 brow gel she swears by and the MAC lip colour better than velvet teddy.
She was insightful, inspiring and very funny.
Sara Oteri - Masterchef Finalist, Executive Creative Director & Foodie
00:49:10
What happens next after a 'life-changing' reality TV show?
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
A reminder that this interview was recorded before Corona hit so it is a virus-free zone, which hopefully you'll enjoy!
Today my guest is Sara Oteri, Masterchef Australia finalist, foodie and Executive Creative Director. If you're a fan of the show, you'll definitely remember her from the 2015 season where she ended up coming 5th - young, driven, talented, determined and with brilliant curly hair.
Obviously Beauty Island is a beauty-focussed podcast and I've had many beauty centred guests on the show, but I love how it can be a starting point for wider conversation, as well as an interest that is obviously not limited to people who actually work in beauty.
Sara talks about the career rut that led her to Masterchef, how her love of travel has shaped and changed her food preferences, and the un-smudgeable lipstick that will withstand eating, talking and multiple coffees that she wishes she knew about during filming.
One real standout from our conversation which Sara was so open about was the answer to 'what happens next'. For all the incredible opportunities and experiences that eventually came her way, she says the year immediately after Masterchef was one of the hardest of her life. It's, for want of a better phrase, an important reality check that I certainly identified with.
I also have to acknowledge the completely incidental but perfect timing; the latest season of the show started this week! If it's a favourite, I hope you'll enjoy hearing about Sara's story even more.
Kathleen Hou - Beauty Director, The Cut
The eyelash curler anyone with straight eyelashes needs to try...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today, my guest is Kathleen Hou, Beauty Director of The Cut. As the lifestyle, beauty and fashion site of New York magazine, it is easily one of my most visited websites. The content is sharp, smart, light, thought-provoking, nuanced, entertaining and of course informative. All descriptions that apply to Kathleen's work too.
While in the midst of a worldwide lockdown, I chatted virtually me in Melbourne and Kathleen in New York to talk about how she found the courage to pursue her passion for writing after a first career in financial consulting, the concealer she's been buying since before she was a beauty editor and is still yet to be beaten, the best eyelash curler anyone with straight lashes needs to own, her tried and tested travel makeup kit for carry on, and the ultimate lipstick application hack from none other than Pat McGrath that will give you fuller looking lips without lip liner. I know that was a mouthful, but honestly she shared so many great titbits and tips, these are just the starting point!
If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify if you haven't already. Or recommend to a friend or many friends, by sharing a screenshot on your Instagram story. Don't forget to tag @beautyislandpodcast so I can see. As an independent podcaster, those things really help more people discover the podcast so I can keep making it for you! I also have a regular beauty newsletter called It's A Beauty - the link to sign up is below.
Now, over to Kathleen. Enjoy.
Beauty Island presents... Beauty Isolation.
Why (and how) to introduce retinol into your beauty regimen...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and I'm very excited to present a special mini series of Beauty Island called Beauty Isolation.
Normally, I ask my guests about the eight beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to.
In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the eight products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. We'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as conversations around self-care, how they're going, and what they're most looking forward to.
So for the next few weeks, there'll be two Beauty Isolation episodes a week dropping in your feed, with a range of guests, including many from some of my favourite other podcasts.
To kick us off, my first guest is content creator and skin educator Hannah English, who uses her science background to provide an important and unique take on beauty. It's earned her over 30,000 Instagram followers. We talked about why you still need to be wearing SPF in isolation (and taking it off too), an important reminder that self-care can be a lot simpler than a fancy gold leaf face mask, and why now is the perfect time to be introducing skincare ingredients like retinol into your regimen - Hannah shares her beginner's guide.
If you enjoy the podcast, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. I'd love to hear your beauty isolation and favourites - come and chat on Instagram over at @beautyislandpodcast.
Exciting news! Beauty Island has been dubbed a 'new and noteworthy' podcast by Apple!
I'm your host Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to find out about their life, career and the 8 desert island beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. This week, my guest is Stephanie Darling.
Stephanie is the beauty queen, according to her brilliant book Secrets of A Beauty Queen released last year. It's half memoir and half beauty tips, tricks and recommendations.
She's the Beauty Director at Fairfax with a weekly column in Sunday Life, and was the Beauty Director at Vogue Australia for over a decade. She's also worked at Harper's Bazaar, Mode, Cleo and was on the launch team at Madison.
She invited me into her beautiful Sydney home where we talked about the highlights of the over 260 treatments she's trialled including Equine therapy, her decision to get a nose job, thoughts on botox, interviewing Jane Fonda, the, erm, interesting haircuts she's had over the years including a khaki fringe, extravagant beauty press trips, her perfume-smelling skills and a whole lot more.
I hope you enjoy.
Today, my guest is Nicole Eckels , Co-founder of Glasshouse Fragrances. Vivacious, driven and with the most infectious laugh, over the last 15 years, Nicole has built a multi-million dollar business from an idea that came to her whilst perusing the shelves of David Jones and establishing candles into a beauty category of its own.
We talked the early smells that defined her childhood growing up in New York, the early entrepreneurial spirit that had her selling cookies and candy out of her locker, what she learnt about beauty in her first career working in a department store beauty counter, and the eyeliner so good she's been using it for 25 years.
Win! I was lucky to be gifted some of the latest Glasshouse goodies and I have two gorgeous Glasshouse fragrance perfumes to give away! Today my guest is Grace O'Neill, fashion journalist, editor and co-host of the brilliant fashion and pop-culture podcast After Work Drinks. Joining me from isolation in London, she shared the bougie skincare regimen all the magazine editors swear by (and how good it really is), Normal People and the iso-fuelled temptation for DIY bangs, her changing attitude to fashion and personal style, and the budget brow gel that's better than Glossier Boy Brow. She also shared plenty of fab book recommendations to add to your list.
It's the season four FINALE!
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to.
Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
This is the final episode of season four, and I couldn't think of anyone much more fitting to conclude what has been another incredible and inspiring season.
The good news is that I'll be back very soon with a special series; a little tweak to the usual format I'm calling Beauty Isolation. Guests will still be talking through 8 products, but the ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering during quarantine. We'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as a host of related topics. I've hit up some old and new beauty friends for a brilliant line up and I can't wait to share it with you.
Today, my guest is founder of The Blow and From The Memo, Phoebe Simmonds. She's sharp, intelligent, resilient and sitting down with her, it's quickly apparent why she is so highly regarded and liked in the beauty industry. Our chat was just a few days before COVID-19 took over the world.
We talked about what she learned working in beauty and marketing all over the world for top brands including LMVH, Benefit (and even a Bono-affiliated beauty brand), the reality of burnout when you're building a business, having Julia Gillard in for a blowdry, and the sunscreen that got her on the SPF train.
At the end of the episode, we talk about ways you can support businesses like The Blow during these times through gift vouchers. I know that one of the first things I'll be treating myself to is a pampering blowdry from The Blow and I would love to pass that forward to. So I have purchased a voucher that you can spend on a blowdry, dry-style or treatment once they have re-opened that I would love to give away!
TO WIN: All you have to do is share a screenshot of this episode on your Instagram story or as a feed post and ensure you tag @beautyislandpodcast and @theblowaustralia to go in the running to win. Yep, just share a screenshot and tag @beautyislandpodcast and @theblowaustralia and you could win a voucher to go treat yourself to a glorious hair day at The Blow Australia. A flag that current locations when they reopen are in Melbourne or Sydney CBDs, but if you're planning to visit either of those places, again when everything is reopened, then please feel free to enter too!
As always if you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate five stars and write a review. if you need some more beauty escape, sign up to my beauty newsletter It's A Beauty! Or find me on Instagram, @brittanybeautybts.
And today, we have come to the season finale of Season 5 of Beauty Island! Gosh, it's been a strange year, but I'm so grateful for all your support with two seasons and that special Lockdown series. As I mentioned last week, Beauty Island was a finalist for Best Arts and Culture Podcast, which for an independent podcast run by just me, is a huge huge honour. And I couldn't do it without you! So thank you. I'll be taking a bit of a break over summer and returning in 2021 BUT the good news is that my Christmas podcast, A Christmas Binge, is returning for a second year! A fun and festive listen that looks at what we watch, what we eat and how we celebrate with interesting guests, the first episode will drop early december with some stellar guests so keep your eyes and ears out for that. I'll put a link to subscribe in the shownotes.
Onto this season finale, today my guest is founder of Self Care Originals, Rachael Akhidenor. Described as a social enterprise disrupting the wellness industry by advocating for self care for all, Self Care Originals's current form is wearable activism and a content platform, but as you'll hear in this interview, it's just the beginning for the brilliant inclusive platform Rachael is building.
I thought it particularly fitting to end the season and the year with this interview with Rachael, in arguably a year where we've talked about the concept of 'self-care' more than ever. In an insightful and thought-provoking chat, we talked about what self care actually means vs what we're sold it should be, what the wellness industry needs to do to welcome more diversity, her love of blush, and the affordable and unexpected oil she says is a gamechanger for dry skin.
Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today's my guest is Alexis Teasdale, former Beauty Director of Cosmopolitan, Editor of Cosmo Bride and founder of The Festive Co, a styling service, party and all-round bonanza source of inspiration. This intro has actually taken me far longer than I should have because I got lost down the rabbit-hole of events they've done. May I recommend you start with Lex's own wedding.
This episode was special because if you've listened to Beauty Island before, you might have heard her name already, mentioned by previous guest Amy Starr as they are former colleagues and best friends. It was really a demonstration of connection and proof that you should be nice to everyone you cross paths with, as we also link back to other former BI guests including Sarah Tarca and Lisa Patulny. So if you are wanting to listen to more episodes after this one, I highly recommend those.
Anyway, we talk about how a book-obsessed girl from Adelaide landed at some of Australia's most iconic mags including Dolly, Cosmopolitan and Instyle, going into labour while getting eyelash extensions, some brilliant party tips and the dry shampoo as a mum of three she swears by.
The celeb-endorsed moisturising cream that's better than La Mer...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. And welcome to another brand new season of Beauty Island. Yep, that's season 5.
If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today, my guest is Jade Kisnorbo, top celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist who has worked with just about every Aussie celeb and influencer you can name. But makeup wasn't always the plan, with a career journey that's spanned two - (and a bit!) - continents and a lot of hard work, drive and passion. Now you'll catch her presenting the Beauty Buzz segment on Wellness Australia, backstage at runways and red carpet, masterclasses including at Westfield Doncaster... at that could be just one week!
Jade is a makeup artist I've long admired, so it was a thrill to sit down and chat all things beauty. We talked about chasing passion, the celeb endorsed-cream that's better than La Mer, and finally an answer to what to do about under eye creasing from makeup. Plus, so many great tips and advice for both beauty and beyond.
Before we get into it, I have a little favour to ask.
What's it really like taking the leap to go freelance? And is a $500 Dyson hairdryer really worth it?
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
This doesn't necessarily mean practical products. Rather it's the beauty products they've come across throughout their lives that carry significant stories or memories for them. Think the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Editor and Journalist Edwina Carr-Barraclough. Former Health, Beauty and Style Editor of Mamamia, among many other roles, as a freelance writer and social media consultant, her work has been published in the Sydney Morning Herald, news.com.au, Cosmopolitan, and body & soul, to name just a few.
She was also my boss at my first proper media job when I worked as a beauty writer at Mamamia and has been an important teacher and mentor for me.
We talk about adult acne, why motherhood has made her even more ambitious, the difference between AHAs and BHAs (and what the hell they are!) and why, for god's sake, you should stop shaking your hairdresser when you use it. She also has some fantastic beauty recommendations, including the must-have foundation and concealer for oily skin.
I hope you enjoy.
In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the 8 products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. Twice a week, we'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as conversations around self-care, how they're going, and what they're most looking forward to.
Today my guest is content queen Kelly McCarren. She's the host of not one but two podcasts: You Beauty and Overshare, as well as sharing much hilarious social and video content. She's funny and vivacious, and if you've read her work or listened to overshare, she's not afraid to get TMI. We talked about going freelance before a global pandemic, the best skincare oils to try, an unusual use for a beard trimmer - and she had plenty of book and podcast recommendations for the true crime lovers.
As always, the links to all the products Kelly talks about in this episode will be in the show-notes. If you enjoy the podcast, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. If you're after more beauty, you can sign up to my beauty newsletter It's A Beauty!
I'd love to hear your beauty isolation and favourites - come and chat on Instagram over at @beautyislandpodcast.
Now, over to Kelly. Enjoy
Kelly Baker - Beauty Journalist and Editor PART 1
00:42:05
Host Brittany Stewart sits down with former Beauty and Health Director of The Australian Women's Weekly Kelly Baker for episode two. In fact, there was so much to talk about, I had to split it into two parts. (So make sure you listen to this one, Part 1, first!)
Name an Aussie publication and Kelly Baker has probably written for them. The journalist and editor has worked for the likes of New Idea, Body and Soul, Shop Til You Drop, the Australian Women's Weekly and Channel Nine, as well as her own beauty website The Beauty Insider.
Kelly tells it like it is. She's seen a lot in her time in the industry. Along with her eight chosen products, we spoke about the hey days of magazines and what the industry is like now, why fashion is bitchier than beauty, the politics of the term 'anti-ageing', the taboo around botox and fillers and the reality of being a single parent and writing about it on the internet.
She's had a fascinating career and has so many great insights. I hope you enjoy.
Kirsten Carriol - Founder and CEO, Lanolips
00:52:42
What does it really take to be successful in business? And what's the grown-up musky perfume this beauty expert wants her kids to remember her by?
Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
If you've listened since the beginning or to a few episodes of Beauty Island, you'll have noticed that certain products get mentioned multiple times by different people. And there's one product that has been selected the most as people's desert island essential; Lanolips. A lanolin-based multipurpose ointment from a South Australian brand that can be used for just about anything you can think of.
So it is my absolute pleasure to have founder of Lano, Kirsten Carriol, as this week's beauty Island guest. I was hoping to sit down in Sydney with Kirsten in person but being in Melbourne makes it a little difficult and I really wanted to bring you this chat as soon as possible so I was very lucky to get her early one morning over the phone - and I have to say this is possibly one of my favourite interviews I've done this year. I've listened to it a few times now during the editing process and each time I hear a new nugget of gold; so I hope you feel the same.
Before she became the founder and CEO of an internally beloved beauty brand stocked by pretty much by the biggest beauty retailers around the world including Mecca, Priceline, Sephora and Net-A-Porter, Kirsten worked in beauty PR, launching the likes of Laura Mercier and St Tropez into Australia.
That foundation, plus grandparents who were farmers and parents who are scientists in hindsight seems like the perfect formula for what she would go on to do; Turning the uncool ingredient of Lano into a highly successful beauty business.
We talked about the risk of keeping a product so simple yet effective, the foundation and concealer combo she swears by to hide dark circles, the moment she discovered the grown up version of her musky teenage The Body Shop scent, and what she thinks of the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kim Kardashian, Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Chelsea Handler loving her products
Playful chat about beauty but also was very candid about the relentless pace of running a successful business and the truth about that elusive work/life/balance. We spoke about the underrated value of kindness in business which was something that was shining from Kirsten even over the phone. So generous with her time and wisdom. I hope you enjoy our chat.
As always, If you enjoy listening to Beauty island, please subscribe, and rate and review on Apple Podcasts. If you're on instagram, take a screenshot and share it on your stories so I can see where you're listening from - just tag me at @beautyislandpodcast.
Now, over to Kirsten. Enjoy.
Ever cut a fringe and regretted it? Step right this way...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Makeup Artist and YouTuber, Sharon Farrell. Starting on the Benefit counter of her home in Ireland, Sharon started her YouTube channel in 2010. Now, she's had over 35 million video views, over a quarter of a million youtube subscribers, and has just launched her very own Online Makeup School. If you've ever felt overwhelmed or intimidated by the makeup on beauty youTube videos and assumed knowledge they can often make, then you might be very interested to learn more about it.
In this episode, Sharon gives real insight into the world of working as a YouTuber including the steady growth of success over almost a decade rather than (as we keep coming back to) being an overnight success, knowing her husband was the one from the first date (after dodging his calls for a few weeks!) , her post-baby crisis decision of cutting a fringe, and the cheapo cleanser that stops all her breakouts.
Since we spoke, The Online Makeup School has properly launched offering thorough, easy-to-understand and follow tutorials across a range of subjects for a super affordable price - some from $20 to the most comprehensive at $200. This is not sponsored or I haven't been asked to spruik this, but I think it's such a good and valuable resource and there's also a discount available at the moment too, so it's worth checking out if it's of interest.
Glynis Traill-Nash - Fashion Editor of The Australian
With her glossy cherry red hair, my guest on this week's episode of Beauty Island is instantly recognisable.
Glynis Traill-Nash is the Fashion Editor of The Australian, one of Australia's most popular newspapers with a reach of 1.9 million. Her career has spanned a range of magazines and newspapers including Who, Instyle and Grazia, and she's covered numerous local and international fashion weeks.
She invited me into her beautifully-styled Sydney apartment - think a green velvet sofa, wall to wall books, a piano and piles of fashion books - to talk about growing up in Perth, moving to London to pursue her love of acting and singing, juggling her passions and talents for jazz and fashion, the perfume that instantly transports her back to performing at the Edinburgh Festival, working in fashion for newspapers compared to magazines, the state of the Australian fashion industry, interviewing Jean Paul Gaultier, her signature red hair, why you'll never catch her in activewear as leisurewear, her vintage YSL collection and why she describes herself as a 'late bloomer'.
BONUS: Five Favs - Maria Hatzistefanis
00:07:46
Want to know the J-Lo- approved face mask? Listen on...
Hello! I'm Brittany Stewart, beauty journalist and you are listening to another bonus Beauty Island episode of Five Favs.
In the main episodes, as you might know by now, I sit down with an interesting guest to find out the eight beauty products they'd take with to a desert island, ones that aren't necessarily practical but have special memories or meaning for them.
I love hearing those picks for the nostalgic, personal and often very relatable stories behind them. But, I've had a few comments from you saying you'd also love to know the products that Beauty Island castaways are using on their faces now. So Five Favs was born, a bitesize episode where in a quickfire round I ask my guests about their five favourite beauty products from a specific category, like foundation or eye product. So yes, I really do read all your reviews and feedback!
This time, it's the best travel beauty tips and product recommendations from Maria Hatzistefanis, the founder of Rodial and Nip + Fab, the beauty brands beloved by everyone from Cameron Diaz and Ellie Goulding to Kylie Jenner. She's also the author and podcast host of How To Be An Overnight Success.
She talks the budget purple shampoo that gives her just-come-from the hairdresser worthy hair, and the Jennifer Lopez-approved mask she uses to rescue dull, jet-lagged skin.
You can find me on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast and if you enjoyed this episode, I would love you to rate and review on Apple Podcasts. (Thank you!)
Introducing a new semi-regular bonus episode of Beauty Island - Five Favs!
I love hearing the products my guests in Beauty Island main episodes pick for the nostalgic, personal and often very relatable stories behind them. But I've had a few comments from you saying you'd ALSO love to know the products that Beauty Island castaways are using on their faces now. And because I genuinely listen and take on all your great feedback, Five Favs was born!
It's a bitesize episode where, in a quickfire round, I ask my guests about their five favourite beauty products from a specific category, like foundation or eye product. Then, there'll also be a piece of wisdom shared - a thoughtful answer to a relevant question about anything from self-esteem to social media.
For the first Five Favs, I have my guest from earlier this week, Irish-Aussie YouTuber Michelle Crossan.
Since starting her 'real girl' beauty YouTube channel in 2013, Michelle has gained over 150,000 subscribers and more than eight million video views.
She shares her current favourite products, including the must-have lip balm-mask hybrid, and how she maintains a healthy relationship with social media when it's actually her job. I hope you enjoy this bitesize ep - I've plans for lots more!
Kirstie Clements - Author and Former Editor of Vogue Australia
01:01:56
Imagine meeting your husband in a glamorous, smokey Parisian nightclub...
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Today my guest is Author and Former Editor of Vogue Australia, Kirstie Clements. Working her way from the front desk to the top job, Kirstie spent 13 years as the editor of Australia's premiere high fashion magazine. Then one day, out of the blue, she was fired. Her book The Vogue Factor, which she was approached to write the very next day, tells of her incredible story from rebel in The Shire to Beauty Editor in Paris to one of Sydney's most influential magazine editors... And what happened after that.
Like anyone who was once a budding fashion journalist, I have long admired Kirstie and thumbed The Vogue Factor, the first of five books she has written, countless times. So it was truly an honour to have the chance to chat with her about discovering the Sydney punk scene at 16, how beauty can be warpaint, community building and even meditive in life's chaotic moments, her blurred cameo in Zoolander and how she's feeling about returning to magazines full-time six years after leaving Vogue, this time as Features Director at Harper's Bazaar, another former home for her.
One note - this interview was conducted over the phone so the quality of the audio is not as good as when we're both in the same room. That is always my aim in arranging interviews, but given I'm in Melbourne, work full-time in a job unrelated to this podcast and many of my guests are a) in Sydney and b) very busy people who are very kind to give up their time to do this podcast is sometimes a little difficult.
I do use my leave to go up to Sydney every few months to do these interviews but I recently had someone a leave a review commenting on the audio of these over the phone episodes so just wanted to acknowledge that and explain a little bit about why that sometimes happens. But as always I appreciate that feedback, and will definitely be ensuring more, and hopefully soon, all episodes are done in person.
Speaking of reviews, If you do enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate and write a review. But enough of me, over to my chat with the fabulous Kirstie Clements. Enjoy.
Should you ever attempt an at-home brow lamination?
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and this is another episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island.
Normally, I ask my guests about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. Today I am thrilled to have Lisa Mortimer and Alex Morris, two thirds of another brilliant beauty podcast, All Bases Covered. We talk pimple treatments, underground botox, attempting an at-home brow lamination, and the perfect 'slap-on-with-your-hands' foundation alternative. Part of the reason I love their podcast is because they're not afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to beauty products, which they did so brilliantly here. It was a lot of fun, and I hope you'll enjoy it too.
Sarah Laidlaw - Makeup Artist, Hair and Makeup Director at Priceline
00:48:25
Does budget and more expensive makeup get made in the same factory?....
Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.
I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart.
Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.
Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.
Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.
Thank you for the feedback on last week's address of Coronavirus. Obviously even in the space of a week, things have changed dramatically. Again, while done remotely over the phone as my partner works in hospital so I've been implementing social distancing for a little while, this interview was conducted before things escalated, and as I'm trying to do with most of my episodes, does not talk about the virus. Instead, I hope it can be a brief respite for the overload but essential updates of information.
Today, my guest is Sarah Laidlaw, award-winning hair and makeup artist and Hair and Makeup Director of Priceline.
And I really do mean award-winning; Sarah has won Australia's prestigious Session Stylist of the Year title no less than five times. She's had work published in top local and international magazines, worked with some of the best photographers, celebrities and has experience on everything from TV shows to editorial to music videos to runways. It's been a glittering 29 years with no end in sight.
It was also a complete joy to talk to someone who is so obviously passionate about what she does - you'll hear it in her voice.
We talked about her inherited love for chapstick, working with celebrities, why an eyelash applicator is a complete game changer and, my favourite, she busts a popular myth about the price tag on makeup products. As Priceline celebrates its Festival of You, running until March 26, we also had a really interesting conversation about visibility of women over 40 in media and beauty advertising, and she shared an Instagram account celebrating women over 50 you need to follow. It's certainly brightening my feed.
Each time I sit down to an episode of Beauty Island, I am continually blown away by my guests. Their willingness to share their stories, firstly, but also just the incredible strength, wisdom, positivity and dogged determination they have. Victoria is one of those again.
She's been someone I've been in contact with for a while, so it was so good to finally have her over one grey Saturday morning for non-stop beauty chat.
We talked about her early interaction with the transformative power of beauty, the gap she identified after working at L'Oreal for a makeup brand that was actually good for your skin, and she shared the best fake tan tip for your hands I've ever heard.
