MJ’s guest this week is one of the world’s foremost authorities on Burgundy and a member of the famed Wasserman family, Paul Wasserman. Paul was just a year old when the Wassermanns moved from Philadelphia to Burgundy. 09 Apr 2021Styles Upon Styles Upon Styles is What I Have - You Want to Dis the Zin But You Still Don’t Know the Half! Co-Owner of Dancing Crow Vineyards, Stefan Cartlidge on the Magic of Lake County Wines. 01:09:32

MJ’s guest this week is Stefan Cartlidge. Stefan comes from an esteemed family of Northern Californian winemakers. His father Tony Cartlidge, co-founded Cartlidge & Browne Winery in Sonoma, CA  in 1980. After several years in Northern California, Stefan now represents the family’s wines on the East Coast. MJ is blown away by the Dancing Crow bottles shared in the studio. Stefan breaks down what makes Lake County and it’s Kelsey Bench AVA so special for winemakers. They also get into Dancing Crow’s delicious 2018 Zinfandel and why the user generated wine apps often totally miss the mark on this one (and many other good wines as well!). MJ’s guest today is second generation sommelier, restaurateur and the U.S. Ambassador for Charles Heidsieck Champagne, Philippe André. Many of you may know him by his IG handle Nique Somm.

Philippe first developed a passion for hospitality and wine education growing up in the fine dining restaurant business. He answered his professional calling working as the Wine Director at his family’s highly esteemed French-American restaurant, Oceanique in Evanston, Illinois. 26 Jul 2021Six Degrees of Kevin Zraly. A Candid Discussion with the Godfather of Wine Education in America.01:34:00

MJ’s guest today is a living legend in the world of wine and wine educators, Kevin Zraly. Kevin Zraly is best known from his time as the wine director for the Windows on the World restaurant and founder of the Windows on the World Wine School on the 106th and 107th floors of NYC’s World Trade Center.  After the loss of the restaurant in 2001, Zraly continued the wine school for another 15 years at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan, ultimately educating more than 20,000 wine lovers over the course of 40 years. In addition, he has written eight books about wine and food, including his annually updated Windows on the World Complete Wine Course, which has sold more than four million copies - making it the number one wine book in the United States.

Kevin’s a storyteller at heart and this episode is packed with gems. MJ and he discuss his early days growing up as an altar boy to his transition as a young Woodstock Music Festival attendee. Kevin describes his incredible first restaurant job in college which started his wine journey. His determination to learn much more about wine began with a hitchhiking adventure from New York to California wine country when he was barely old enough to drink. His retelling of landing the Windows on the World job is as iconic as the man himself. And if the discussions weren’t wonderful enough Kevin brings in a very special bottle  - from 1968 the year MJ was born. Pop something worthy of a nonstop romp through the adventures of a lifetime told by a legend!

02 Aug 2021From High School Dropout to CEO: Carlton McCoy’s American Success Story01:27:47

MJ’s guest today is Master Sommelier, Managing Partner of Lawrence Wine Estates, and star of the upcoming CNN TV series “Nomad with Carlton”... Carlton McCoy. Carlton is one of the youngest people and second African American to earn the title of Master Sommelier. Carlton worked in revered institutions such as Thomas Keller’s Per Se, Marcus Samuelsson’s Aquavit and Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak in New York. Carlton was named President and CEO of Heitz Cellar in December 2018. Carlton supports each estate in their aspirations to craft elegant, nuanced and terroir driven wines sourced from naturally farmed estate vineyards. Carlton is co-founder of The Roots Fund, a non-profit that focuses on creating educational and employment opportunities for the BIPOC community. Adventurous and athletic, Carlton enjoys traveling the world in search of great wine and spirits, and pursuing physically challenging outdoor activities including biking and running marathons.

Originally from Washington, DC, Carlton’s story starts out familiar but quickly turns unique. From high school drop-out (a few times over) to accepting a scholarship to the CIA, Carlton McCoy has earned each and every accolade. MJ and he discuss the younger days of working in the kitchen with his grandmother, feeding over 300 people for all three church services, leaving the New York restaurant scene to cook for the American Military in Japan, which led to his natural progression from food to wine during an all-night blind taste test. Put the Go-go on low, grab a glass of Sancerre and listen to the trials, tribulations and successes of Carlton McCoy.

27 Sep 2021Been Around The World. Jeff Porter's Sips and Trips.01:40:26

MJ’s guest is seasoned sommelier, wine educator and founder of Volcanic Selections, Jeff Porter. Jeff has been featured in numerous major food and wine publications, such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, Eater and The Financial Times. Jeff’s sommelier career began in Napa Valley, where he worked at Tra Vigne Ristorante in St. Helena. He joined the Bastianich Hospitality Group in 2009 at Osteria Mozza under the auspice of James Beard Award winning chef Nancy Silverton. In 2011 he moved to New York to become the wine director for Del Posto. In 2014, Jeff became the Beverage Operations Director, overseeing the beverage programs for Babbo, Del Posto, Esca, Lupa, Otto, Babbo Pizzeria and more. In 2019, Jeff left the Bastianich group and began his consulting career and a web series about wine, life, and culture called Sip Trip. And in 2020, Jeff opened Volcanic Selections, an import and distribution business. Outside of beverages, Jeff is an avid at-home cook, doting father, passionate traveler, and a lover of all things barbecue.

Jeff’s passion for food and wine comes through, literally, in this episode. Jeff is the first guest to bring a meal - burger and fries - to accompany his wine selection of A 2019 Dolcetto D’Alba and a 2013 Henskens Rankin of Tasmania Brut Rose’. Neither disappoint. Originally from Texas, Jeff understands a good meal, and it wasn’t until his college days - working at a German restaurant as a dishwasher - did he start to understand wine and all its beauty and complexities. MJ and Jeff have only just begun with this conversation, tackling items one by one such as how Jeff went from a small suburb north of Dallas to the inner city of Los Angeles working as a teacher for Teach for America, right out of UT-Austin. Jeff talks about the inspiration he gained from his father who gifted him WINE by Hugh Johnson; his time at Tra Vigne Ristorante and how he learned he had one job: make people happy; essentially throwing a party each and every night. It’s Part 1 with Jeff Porter, and it’s a juicy one.

A huge thank you to Jeff Porter!

04 Oct 2021BEFORE THE POUR SEASON 2, PART 1 - BONUS EPISODE! 01:41:30

Who would Audrey Frick most like to drink a bottle of wine with and what did MJ learn from her answer? What turns John Kapon on - besides his wife? Pascaline Lepeltier’s favorite cartoon? Lyle Railsback’s least favorite word? (hint, there are two of them and yup, we totally feel him!)  Bruno Almeida curses in Portuguese and Eric Asimov’s work out routine makes him a triple threat.

This is Before the Pour, Season 2, Part 1 - a super fun BONUS EP that is a mixed tape of candid moments with guests from the first half of Season Two. A perfect anecdote to a stressful day - kick back, relax and listen to MJ and your favorite guests warm up and cut loose before each show. Cheers!

18 Oct 2021 I Just Want to Fly: Landon Patterson's Journey from the LBC to DRC01:43:24

MJ’s guest today is Sommelier, Wine Sales and Marketing Phenom and Chief Revenue Officer for Hundred Acres Wine Group, Landon Patterson. A native of Southern California, Patterson began his wine career as a Sommelier in Las Vegas, working with the venerable Wolfgang Puck at his signature restaurants on "The Strip". While there, he built a passion and a strong platform of knowledge focused on international luxury wines, with a specialty in wines from Italy and Spain. Patterson’s love of wine and natural ability to impart that passion to consumers, especially luxury customers, quickly lead him into the world of sales and marketing. Over the last 20 years, his deep knowledge of international and luxury wines seamlessly translated into working as a sales and marketing leader with small, US family-owned wine producers. Landon Patterson became a member of the Hundred Acre team at the beginning of 2013. Over the past eight years, he has managed all aspects of sales and marketing, which work hand-in-hand in driving revenue, and expanded the Hundred Acre portfolio of wines into 35 countries on 4 continents. When he’s not traveling the world for work - He’s also dog daddy to his beloved French Bulldog, Sigmund.

MJ and Landon discuss Landon’s unconventional upbringing that ultimately cultivated his hustler mentality, ability to take a punch and get back up, and why he prefers to work with the passionate, the eccentric, and the manic. Landon outlines his unorthodox journey from being a Las Vegas waiter with no experience to being the best at what he does in the industry. Sharing some insights into Jayson Woodbridge’s philosophy with Hundred Acre Wine, MJ and Landon discuss the importance of patience and the benefits of not playing by the rules.

A huge thank you to Landon Patterson!

MJ’s guest is veteran Sommelier, author and Co-Founder, and Chief Imaginator at Kalamata’s Kitchen, Sarah Thomas. Sarah was sommelier at acclaimed Le Bernardin. She is now the co-founder and Chief Imaginator at Kalamata’s Kitchen, where she brings together her lifelong passions for both food and books. The daughter of two south Indian immigrants, Sarah grew up in the rural town of Somerset, Pennsylvania, and was surrounded by food from a young age. She would spend summers in Kerala visiting her grandparents, forming some of her earliest food memories. While working at various restaurants in Pittsburgh and then at Le Bernardin, Sarah obtained the prestigious Advanced Sommelier certification and was featured in the popular SOMM film series. Through her storytelling work with Kalamata’s Kitchen, Sarah hopes to create a confident character that other children of color can see themselves in, while also encouraging all kids to look at different foods and cultures with a sense of curiosity and compassion.

Sarah’s incredible passion for food, her Indian heritage and upbringing, shines through in her Kalmata’s Kitchen books, events, online travel guides and when she speaks, to children and adults alike. In this episode, MJ and Sarah talk about her chance encounter with sommelier and co-owner of the highly acclaimed Le Bernardin, alongside Chef Eric Ripert, Aldo Sohm... and how she landed a job that very day! The two also discuss her summers growing up in Kerala, India, how Kalamata’s Kitchen came to life, and the exciting projects she and co-founder Derek Wallace have in the works with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment. The BYOB King! How Mark Iacono built Lucali's into an NYC institution brick by brick and bottle by bottle

MJ’s guest is a chef and owner of the one of the most sought after pizzerias in all of Brooklyn, Mark Iacono. Born and raised in Carroll Gardens, Mark Iacono grew up fully immersed in Italian American culture. He was a regular neighborhood kid. He enjoyed his grandmother’s cooking, playing centerfield, and trips to the local candy shop with his father. Then in 2006 without any experience in the culinary arts or restaurant business, Mark opened his now iconic pizzeria, Lucali - its location in the very same storefront of the candy shop his father had taken him to throughout his childhood. Lucali has become a B.Y.O.B. destination for wine collectors — the front window is lined with empty Burgundy bottles, including a 1971 La Tâche. Mark's clientele include the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonce, Paul McCartney, and David Beckham. Mark has appeared in New York Magazine, Insider, the Today Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers and Netflix’s Ugly Delicious. He hosted (3) seasons of Thrillist’s Really Dough? series.

Mark and MJ discuss the possibilities of unexpected culinary education and running a business in your childhood neighborhood.

09 Nov 2021“You Talk’n to Me?” Drew Nieporent on Longevity and Relevance in the NYC Restaurant Scene. 01:25:42

Born and raised in Manhattan, Drew started down his road to restauranteur as a young man in the 1960s. He went on to earn a degree from the School of Hotel Management at Ivy league, Cornell University while working on cruise ships. By 1985 he had opened his first restaurant, Montrachet, which earned three stars from the NYTimes and a coveted Michelin star, keeping its rating for decades. Drew formed his first of many celebrity partnerships in 1990 when he opened Tribeca Grill in 1990 with Robert DeNiro. The now NY landmark restaurant attracted an all star roster of investors including Bill Murray, Sean Penn, and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Making 1994 a defining year in Nieporent’s decades long success story, he once again partnered with Robert DeNiro and renowned sushi chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, to open Nobu NYC, Next Door Nobu, and Nobu Fifty-Seven - all of which earned a three star rating from the NYTimes. And of course, Myriad's excellence in wine service is widely acknowledged and its only restaurant group to earn three coveted Grand Awards from Wine Spectator Magazine. In 2005, Myriad opened Crush Wine & Spirits, which was named the best new wine shop by Food & Wine Magazine.

MJ and Drew discuss Drew’s early years and how going out to dinner frequently in NYC with his father, a lawyer for the NYC State Liquor License Department, as a kid helped hone his eventual career path. Drew shares some of what it takes to have so many successful restaurants still open and thriving globally. This episode is packed with tales from a life lived truly without parallel.

22 Nov 2021Dan In Real Life. Dan Petroski’s Massican Mission to Create Meaningful Impact in the World01:31:54

MJ’s guest is a winemaker and the founder of Massican Wines, Dan Petroski. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY where he went on to play football at Columbia. He went on to work for Time Inc. while also studying for his MBA at NYU, both ingredients for a promising future in magazine publishing. Dan began his wine education literally winning and dining clients around Manhattan’s best restaurants. He set off for Sicily, where he interned at Valle dell’Acate for a year. Dan originally intended to return to NYC to sell wine, but later received a harvest invitation in 2006 in Napa Valley. Not long after that, Petroski was hired as cellar master, ultimately claiming the Larkmead winemaker title in 2012. In 2009, Dan launched his own wine business called Massican, which specializes in Italian inspired white wines. Massican is a one-man operation where Dan manages all winemaking, sales and marketing. In July of 2020 Dan went back to his digital media roots launching Massican Magazine online. Petroski's approach and ability to craft wines as diverse as Cabernet Sauvignon and Tocai Friulano has earned him the recognition as San Francisco Chronicle’s Winemaker of the Year in 2017

On this episode, MJ and Dan enjoy a beautiful bottle of Fiorano Boncampagni Ludovisi, while discussing Dan’s unlikely start to a decorated and fulfilling career in wine, his once in a lifetime winemaking education in Sicily, his time at Larkmead, starting his own business at Massican, and fighting climate change on the front lines! Period. Cheers!

29 Dec 2021The Old Man and The Romanée. Chatting Basketball and Burgundy with JJ Redick01:32:51

MJ’s guest is JJ Redick, the famous Duke University basketball player, where he still holds several records including “all time leading scorer.” JJ’s professional basketball career began in 2006 when the Orlando Magic selected him with the 11th pick overall. Over the course of his 15 year NBA career he has played with Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Orleans Pelicans, and finally the Dallas Mavericks. He is the creator and host of the podcast The Old Man and the Three. In 2020, he founded the podcasting company ThreeFourTwo Productions. He is an enthusiastic wine collector, JJ has assembled a cellar of diverse vinous selections, which he recently discussed in “All Starts Uncorked” a digital event sponsored by Acker Wines. JJ is a devout Christian, husband, and father, an ESPN sports corresponder and… a household name.

On this week’s episode, MJ and his guest discuss in detail JJ’s legendary journey from an uneven backyard basketball court full of obstacles to numerous records at Duke University, his spectacular professional career, and of course, his love affair with wine. JJ reminisces on his earliest athletic experiences, balancing baseball and basketball before ultimately embarking on the path that would seal his place in basketball history. He reflects on his decision to complete his four years of college, where he was just hours before the draft, the contract celebration that sparked his curiosity about wine, what it was like to bond over a bottle during the NBA pandemic bubble, and what it means to be a compassionate human being.

19 Jan 2022Heart and Soil: Eric Jensen on Life and Wine in Paso Robles01:44:27

MJ’s guest is Founder of Booker Vineyards, one of Paso Robles Legendary Artisanal Cult Wineries, Eric Jensen. Eric and his wife Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of  property in Paso Robles, CA in 2001 with the intent of growing the best fruit for some of the best wineries in the area. After making wine with Justin Smith (of Saxum) for five years and Stephan Asseo (of L'Aventure Wines) for two years, the Jensens decided it was time to create their own expression with Booker Vineyard. The 2005 Vintage was Booker Vineyard's first release with the wines being made by Eric himself. The vineyard received organic certification in April of 2021.

11 Apr 2022Where’s The Beef? Talking Burgers and Bourbon with George Motz 01:32:40

MJ’s guest today has been named by The New York Times as the “foremost authority on hamburgers,” and “America’s biggest burger name,” by Eater LA; he’s a well-traveled Emmy Award-winning freelance filmmaker, author, and photographer - George Motz. George shot, produced, edited, and directed his documentary, Hamburger America which was nominated for a James Beard Award and recognized by the US National Archives as an integral part of American food history. In 2016, George authored his first cookbook, “The Great American Burger Book.” He hosted and co-executive produced Travel Channel’s Burger Land, based on his book “Hamburger America, a State-by-State Guide to Great Burger Joints.” You can watch George on his show Burger Scholar Sessions on Complex Media’s First We Feast, now in its 5th season.

In this episode, MJ and George discuss his time at Catholic University, his career in commercial photography and filmmaking. George gives us a history lesson in the origins of the original burger, and talks about some of the best burgers (without playing favorites) in the Midwest and out West, including In-N-Out Burger’s Double-Double to the Triple Double. George discusses his documentary Hamburger America, his Motz Burger pop-up, wherein 2 hours he sold over 150 burgers from his burger window slide at his Brooklyn home; his Niche Niche pop up where Jean-Georges stopped by and why he started The Food Film Festival. Grill or pan-fry a burger your way and grab a cold one because this is a juicy one!

13 Jun 2022Ladies First! How Isabel Ferrando found Passion and Purpose in Châteauneuf-du-Pape01:21:59

MJ’s guest today is esteemed Châteauneuf-du-Pape vigneron and winemaker, Isabel Ferrando! Isabel has been cultivating vines and making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape for 18 years. Her wines have been dubbed by critics as “some of the most profound wines on the planet” (Jeb Dunnuck). Drawing inspiration from the Burgundian tradition of single vineyards, Isabel produced three different cuvées from Saint Prefert’s estates from 2003 to 2019: Classique, Réserve Auguste Favier and Collection Charles Giraud.

In this episode, MJ and Isabel discuss how Isabel went from working for a bank to making wine in her own vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Isabel shares details of her organic and biodynamic vineyard practices, her revolutionary new approach to making wine in a glass vat, and her daughter’s recent decision to follow in Isabel’s footsteps.

A huge thank you to Isabel Ferrando!

30 Jun 2022The Road Less Traveled: Victor O. Schwartz’s Never Ending Story 01:40:15

MJ’s guest today is former banker turned wine importer, and founder of VOS Selections, Victor O. Schwartz. Victor initially worked in the banking sector on loans, stocks and bonds, before transitioning to the wine industry. His upbringing was steeped in an intense culinary culture. In 1986, Victor moved to France to jump start his wine career. VOS Selections has been a staple in the wine industry for over 35 years.

In this episode MJ and Victor talk about his journey from banking to learning the language of terroir in the country of France, where he received hands-on experience in the wine business. The duo also discuss the money that drives the wine industry vs. the farming that drives it; whether we’re “there yet?” with non-alcoholic wine, the lost art of handwritten letters and its effectiveness (Thank you, Steven Spurrier), and ultimately how Victor O. Schwartz became VOS Selections. Pull up a chair, and a sharp one, this is a fast paced, laugh out loud good time with Mr. VOS!

A huge thank you to Victor O. Schwartz!

04 Jul 2022Riesling Study. Why Stephen Bitterolf Bet on Himself and German Wines.01:34:33

MJ’s guest is artist, an art historian, a wine collector, a salesman, an importer, and the founder of Vom Boden, Stephen Bitterolf. Stephen came to NYC in the early 00s to get his PhD in Northern Renaissance painting - during which time his fascination was born. In 2005, he landed a job as a salesperson at the newly opened Crush Wine & Spirits, one of New York City’s sleekest wine stores at the time.

In 2012, he became an importer of German wines which led to his founding of Vom Boden. Vom Boden is a small company, focusing on small growers. He later founded Rieslingfeier, an annual event that seeks to celebrate German Rieslings, to provide a greater context for this incredible history of winemaking – to re-emphasize the historical importance of terroir.

Stephan, self proclaimed German wine “dork” take listeners (and MJ!) on a deep dive into the wines he’s so passionate about. From the Kabinett to the Spätlese to the Auslese. Stephen’s personal journey from art history to German wine importer is as fascinating as the wines he loves.
