In this episode, we stop off at the Animated Series to do a perfunctory check in, but it winds up being much more than that.  This is the one episode of TAS that is confirmed multiple times as being canon, and it really expands on Spock and his background.  The Guardian of Forever is back.  And we meet Spock's pet teddy bear with 9 inch fangs, as a young Spock is forced to make a hard, but morally correct decision that would go on to affect the present day Spock that we know and love.

In an era before the prime directive exists, the crew of the Enterprise picks up a dying humanoid that represents an entire species on the brink of death.  Their request, for Archer to give them Warp drive capabilities, Dr Phlox has second thoughts about it, thinking that their extinction may actually be a part of the evolution of their planet as a new species is about to rise.  Man, if only there was actually a guiding principle to help them out in situations like that.  Let's find out Matt's take on this episode as he watches it for the first time.

While visiting a Vulcan monastery, Archer, Trip, and T'Pol stumble into a hostage situation, where the monks are being held by the neighboring Andorians, who suspect the monastery is really being used an espionage base.  When that turns out to be true, Archer exposes the Vulcans, setting off a sequence of events that may lead to further hostilities between the Vulcans and the Andorians, with the Humans caught in the middle.

The Enterprise stumbles on a ship full of Vulcan pilgrims, a sect of Vulcans seeking the freedom to practice embracing their emotions as well as the freedom to perform the strictly prohibited practice known as a Mind Meld.  One of the pilgrims helps T'Pol experience emotions, a sensation that is scary but exciting to her, but then he goes too far when he forces a mind meld on her.

It's our final adventure with our intrepid crew of the 1701-D...errr...1701-E.  When an explosion blows up the Romulan Senate, the new leader of the Romulans requests an audience with Captain Picard.  When Picard meets him, he is surprised to discover that this new leader, Shinzon, is actually a clone of Captain Picard himself, and the clone is bent on the destruction of the Federation.  Meanwhile, Data finds a long lost brother of his, B-4.

When an alien craft arrived above Earth and proceed to cut a swath through the Earth from Florida to Venezula, the Enterprise is ordered home.  Devistated by the attack, Archer and the crew prepare to find out who did this and why, traveling into an area of space called the Expanse, a sort of Bermuda Triangle of space, much to the dismay of the Vulcans.

An ancestor of Dr. Soong has gotten his hands on the cryogenically frozen embryos of the human auments from the late 1990s (you know, Khan's people), and he has birthed them, raised them, and now they're on a mission to rescue all of their brothers and sisters to continue the work that was started by their predecessor.  When their aggressive tendancies began to manifest, Dr. Soong loses control of them.

T'Pol's mother goes missing, and it is suspected she has joined a rebel faction of Vulcan society, one that says it embraces the true teaching of Surak, and that Vulcan society, led by the High Council, has lost it's way. The High Council is eager to track down this "cult," despite interference from Archer and T'Pol, who encounter a Vulcan with the actual spirit of Surak inside of him which is evenutally transferred to Archer, to help get the rest of Vulcan society to see the light.
