Bayern Munich were stunned at home on their 125th anniversary celebration. In a match with lots of rotation, the drop in quality was evident. Despite some impressive individual performances, squad cohesion was a clear problem, and individual errors, including a harsh red card on Pahlinha. Most importantly though, Bayern Munich remain 8 points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen and came out injury-free.

  • A look at the starting XI and our thoughts on the rotation.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
  • Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match.

21 Oct 2024Bavarian Podcast Works S7E13: Could Bayern Munich really lose to FC Barcelona? Discussing Lewy vs Kane, Kompany vs Flick, Yamal vs Musiala, and an unthinkable outcome01:03:43

Few things are inevitable in football, but Bayern Munich vs FC Barcelona has certainly felt that way in recent years. The two FCBs have an incredibly lopsided record in the UEFA Champions League, with Bayern not just winning games, but winning them by some margin, year after year, ad nauseam.

The links between these two clubs are numerous — Barca employ former Bayern Munich men in both Robert Lewandowski and Hansi Flick. Flick especially was considered for the coaching position at Bayern before Vincent Kompany was hired. That makes this game more emotionally charged than usual.

In this episode, INNN and Michael discuss the following:

  • Who should be on the starting lineup? Should Thomas Müller play? Does Serge Gnabry keep starting?
  • Who are the most dangerous players on the Barca side? Lamine Yamal vs Jamal Musiala, and the curious case of Raphinha.
  • How Barca’s attack stacks up against the Bayern Munich defense.
  • Why Bayern has an advantage attacking the Barca defense.
  • Discussing the two strikers — Harry Kane vs Robert Lewandowski. Who is better?
  • What if Vincent Kompany loses? Where do we go next?

26 Oct 2022Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — FC Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich (Champions League)00:17:41
So Bayern Munich went to the Camp Nou and won 3-0. Fortress? Not really. FC Barcelona could barely manage a chance as they struggled to break down a much more solid Bayern side than the one we saw at the Allianz Arena a month ago. Robert Lewandowski barely got a look in as Julian Nagelsmann’s system neutralized the new lineup chosen by Xavi to reverse Barca’s flagging fortunes in the Champions League. Here are our talking points from the game:Xavi’s weird lineup and how it was intended to influence the game.A quick recap of what went down.Player-by-player performance ratings. How good is Choupo-Moting right now?Is Jamal Musiala’s recent quietness a cause for worry?Unintentional fouls from Bayern Munich — Anthony Taylor’s fault or a real concern?Compliments to the defense today. 24 Jul 2024Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 3, Episode 56: Is Bayern Munich about to send the players it wants gone a big message?; Rooting for Niklas Süle; The latest on Matthijs de Ligt, Xavi Simons and Désiré Doué; plus MORE!00:44:05

Bayern Munich’s training camp is well underway and things are starting to develop before the full squad has even arrived.

Whispers are emerging that some players might be in trouble — and could get some help in being convinced that they need to move on. That’s a hot topic as is, but there is plenty more to chat about as well, so let’s get to it:

  • Recent reports indicate that Vincent Kompany could use the preseason to help thin out the roster by making it clear that some players will not have a role on his squad. Who might those players be? Is this the right way to handle it? What does this say about Bayern Munich as a whole and how the perception of Bayern could change among fans and players alike.
  • Bayern Munich might miss out on both Xavi Simons and Désiré Doué — and here’s why.
  • Bayern Munich might be shooting itself in the foot by playing hardball with Manchester United over Matthijs de Ligt.
  • Everyone should be rooting for Niklas Süle to get fully back into form (even if he is a Borussia Dortmund player).

21 Dec 2023Bavarian Podcast Works: Weekend Warm-up Podcast Season 3, Episode 24 — Assessing where Bayern Munich play; Grading Bayern players and position groups; Looking at Thomas Müller’s new deal; and MORE!00:46:58

Bayern Munich close out the first half of the season (effectively, not officially) with a 2-1 win on the road over Wolfsburg that displayed the best and worst of what the Bavarians have showed throughout the Hinrunde.

With some downtime in the schedule, now is the moment to reflect on where the team is, how it has played, and where things might be going....so let’s get to it:

  • Running back the first half of the season, assessing where Bayern Munich is at this stage of the season.
  • Grading players and position groups — see who ranked high and who needs to make some big improvements in order for Bayern Munich to get where it needs to be for the second half of the season.
  • Discussing Thomas Muller’s well-deserved new deal, his recent performances, and what kind of role — if any — he has moving forward under Thomas Tuchel.

27 Jan 2024Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Augsburg 2-3 Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)00:17:36

Phew, Bayern Munich got away with that one. After going 3-1 up courtesy of goals by Aleksandar Pavlović, Alphonso Davies, and Harry Kane, no one would have expected FC Augsburg to make it a nervous finish for Bayern by getting two penalties in quick succession in the dying minutes of the game. Anyway, it was still an important win — no one can argue with three points.

In this episode, we discuss the following topics:

  • The starting lineups of the game.
  • Manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactics and how he set up his team.
  • The individual performance of one Aleksandar Pavlović.
  • The future of Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

20 Oct 2021Bavarian Podcast Works Postgame Show: Talking points from Bayern Munich’s 4-0 win over Benfica00:17:05
Bayern Munich have just cruised to another win the Champions League group stage, this time scoring four quickfire goals against Portuguese giants SL Benfica. This puts the Bavarians in a commanding position in their group with nine points out of a possible nine. Julian Nagelsmann couldn’t make the game due to a sudden flu, but he’ll be happy with the result his boys managed to get at the Estadio da Luz, the same place where Bayern clinched the treble a little over a year ago. Here are our talking points from the game:A recap of the extremely weird formation by Bayern, consisting of a back-three and asymmetrical wingers.Reviewing player performances from the top, starting with how Leroy Sane has surpassed his Manchester City form under Julian Nagelsmann.Talking about Marcel Sabitzer’s first start, and how you can’t help but feel disappointed by him so far.A quick recap of everyone else, including the beating taken by Robert Lewandowski from Otamendi and Vertonghen.A full breakdown of what’s wrong with Benjamin Pavard, and why the arguments used to defend him don’t hold water.Closing thoughts on the subs and the clean sheet. As always, we love your feedback and appreciate all the support!Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. 21 Jan 2024Bavarian Podcast Works S6E28: Bayern Munich MUST sack Thomas Tuchel to save the season and here’s why (Rant incoming)00:55:13

That was shameful, and it’s only going to get worse. Bayern Munich just lost to Werder Bremen for the first time since 2008, and you really cannot blame anyone except Thomas Tuchel. People will argue against this, but at this point there’s nothing to argue against. The coach has his team playing some of the most diabolical football possible right now, and the results aren’t even what they used to be. This gives us plenty to talk about on the podcast, but we’re not happy about it.

In this episode, INNN tackles the following:

  • The lineup: Why bench Thomas Müller AGAIN?
  • The return of the U-shaped system.
  • Harry Kane is not playing like a striker and that has consequences for everybody.
  • Jamal Musiala is wasted in this system.
  • Leroy Sané is not playing better on the left and Tuchel is causing havoc by letting him.
  • A mini-rant about Müller which you’ve probably heard before, but it needs repeating.
  • The midfield doesn’t work and here’s why.
  • What does Guerreiro even DO?
  • How Alphonso Davies has been made redundant by the current Bayern system.
  • Dayot Upamecano has too many responsibilities and that’s a problem.
  • A question for the board and their failures — why is Konrad Laimer the starting RB?
  • Why doesn’t the board want to invest in the squad?
  • Why shouldn’t the board sack Tuchel? It would be in the team’s best interest.
  • Who might take over — a shortlist.
  • A final word and outro, plus a short preview of the Union Berlin game.

14 Sep 2021Bavarian Podcast Works Postgame Show: Talking points from Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over FC Barcelona00:17:11
The Champions League is underway and Bayern Munich have started their campaign with a big win. Barcelona may not be what it used to be, but this 3-0 was more comfortable than most would’ve expected, given the fact that the game was played away at the Camp Nou, and Bayern had a grueling schedule coming into this one. Still, Nagelsmann’s boys dispatched their Catalan counterparts with relative ease, recording a precious clean sheet as well. Here are our talking points from the game:Dayot Upamecano and how Nagelsmann made the defense impregnable. How Nagelsmann made adjustments to counter Koeman’s 3-5-2.Analyzing how Bayern maintained the intensity while playing through fatigue. Why Jamal Musiala had an extremely tough time vs the Catalans. How Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller seem underutilized by Nagelsmann so far.Bayern’s midfielders had a bad time against Barca’s 3-5-2, and why Nagelsmann shares the blame.Barcelona fans are more than justified in their dislike of Ronald Koeman — his tactics were way too negative and he doesn’t seem to have a vision for the team.As always, we love your feedback and appreciate all the support!Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. 09 Dec 2024Bavarian Podcast Works S7E20: Bayern Munich has another injury crisis; Talking Bayern’s number retirement; Why Bayern needs Florian Wirtz; and MORE!00:39:03

Bayern Munich is down to its final three games before the Winterpause and some might consider the team to be a little bit wobbly at this point — albeit with a pretty sturdy Jamal Musiala-infused crutch to keep them upright (shout out, Toni Kroos).

As things head into the homestretch before the break, let hit on some of the big topics of the day. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show:

  • Some final takeaways on Bayern Munich’s win over Heidenheim.
  • Retiring Franz Beckenbauer’s number is pretty cool, but I have a strong, anti-retiring numbers stance. I’m conflicted…help me!
  • Bayern Munich is riddled with injuries now that Alphonso Davies and Kingsley Coman have joined the walking wounded. What can Vincent Kompany do to survive the next three games?
  • Getting Florian Wirtz might actually be a necessity…let us make our case why.
  • Herbert Hainer’s curious omission of Leroy Sané.

12 Jan 2024Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show – Bayern Munich 3-0 Hoffenheim (Bundesliga)00:20:48

Bayern Munich got off to a winning start for the second half of the season as it downed Hoffenheim 3-0 in a match that was sometimes frustrating for fans of the Bavarians.

Defensively, Bayern Munich was very solid for most of the match, but did — perhaps — get a little lucky. Attacking-wise, Bayern Munich left something to be desire for portions of the game, but did manage to look sensational at other points.

Let’s see what Marcus and Chuck have to say about the match. Here is what we have on tap:

  • A look at the starting XI, which saw Leon Goretzka sent to the bench in favor of Raphaël Guerreiro.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
  • Takes on how Bayern Munich played, what was good...what needs some work.
  • Why Hoffenheim was a tough match-up and could surprise some people in the second half of the season.
  • Some thoughts on the Eric Dier transfer.

31 Aug 2022Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Bayern Munich 5-0 Viktoria Köln (DFB-Pokal)00:15:30
As expected, Bayern Munich throttled Viktoria Köln 5-0 in the DFB-Pokal. The match started out tough for the Bavarians, who struggled to get going, but once they did, they were an unstoppable force. This is what we have on tap in this episode:A walkthrough of how the scoring broke down.An incredibly slippery pitch thanks to rain (and maybe over-watering) — which set the Bavarian Grass Works alert off.A choppy start to the match did not deter Bayern Munich for too long. The kids are alight — Ryan Gravenberch and Mathys Tel scored goals, while Josip Stanišić got his first extended run of the season.Viktoria Köln was scrappy and played tough as hell. The rotation was necessary and good for squad morale.Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. Bayern Munich’s preseason preparations are underway and soon, the full roster will be back in Bavaria ready to hit the ground running in the club’s quest to get back into the trophy-winning game.

To get back to there, though, Bayern Munich will need to finalize that figures to be an active summer of roster moves. Let’s talk about all of that and more on this episode of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:

  • After EUROs, it has come out that Harry Kane is hurt...what does this mean for Bayern Munich?
  • Is Bayern Munich getting closer on Xavi Simons?
  • Does Manchester United’s acquisition of Leny Yoro help or hurt Bayern Munich quest to sell Matthijs de Ligt? (It’s still a mistake by the way!)
  • Response to a call or Q&A — and why it was the perfect segue to a discussion regarding Bayern Munich’s newfound plan to cut salaries for top players.
  • Another week of rumors pointing toward an exit for Joshua Kimmich, but the potential moves for Alphonso Davies, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman might be harder to manage.
  • A quick lamentation on the injury to Lena Oberdorf.

08 Jun 2023Bavarian Podcast Works: Weekend Warm-up Podcast Season 2, Episode 48 — Is Bayern Munich’s squad set for a massive overhaul?; The latest transfer news and rumors; How long it might take to get stable?00:47:01

We are deep in the throws of silly season with Bayern Munich and it has been absolute craziness for days now.

  • Why Raphael Guerreiro was a deft pickup.

15 Nov 2024Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Special Edition: Breaking down our re-watch of Game of Thrones01:03:16

Hosted by Chuck Smith

Let’s get this out of the way — this is not a Bayern Munich podcast (for this edition only), so we want to give you a fair warning for anyone seeking Bayern Munich or German national team chatter. However, this “special edition” will not affect your normal schedule...a Weekend Warm-up Show has already dropped at its normal day and time!

So...let’s talk about how this came to be...

After the disappointing second season of House of the Dragon, we had a lot of chatter about Game of Thrones, its legacy as a show, the possibilities for it going forward, etc. From that, an idea was sparked for re-watching the show and assessing if we were all vindicated for feeling so bitter about the ending...or if maybe time had healed some old wounds.

We will explore all of that and more. There are a lot of fun categories we take a look at...the good, the bad, and everything in between.

With Bayern Munich on a hiatus, there was no better time to do this and have all of our minds take a little break from what has been a crazy few weeks for the Bavarians.

So, enjoy this if you are into it...or don’t listen if you are not...just be rest assured, we will be turning back to our normal coverage ASAP!

06 Jun 2022Bavarian Podcast Works S4E34: Talking points from Germany’s draw to Italy + Bayern Munich and Serge Gnabry’s confusing standoff00:38:35
Welcome back! It’s been a week since our last podcast and a huge chunk of the Bayern Munich squad is back in the spot with Germany finally back in action for the UEFA Nations League. Given that the World Cup is only months away at this point, these games versus Italy, England, and Hungary are invaluable for Hansi Flick to assess the state of his squad and their reaction to his tactics. The first test vs the Azzurri ended in a draw, and there’s already plenty of talking points from that one.In this episode, INNN and Samrin discuss:Our first impressions from Germany’s performance against Italy. The huge problem Hansi Flick has with Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane. Why Kai Havertz and Thomas Muller should be starting regularly together for the national team.Did Jonas Hofmann secure his spot in the XI for Germany? Why does Hansi Flick keep playing Thilo Kehrer?Who we want to see in the starting lineup versus England in midweek. How Bayern’s problems under Nagelsmann might soon become Germany’s problems as well.Moving onto the Gnabry situation — what exactly is going on here? Why was Gnabry offered 19m a year? And why did he reject it?Potential reasons Gnabry might have for leaving Bayern Munich, and why they don’t make any kind of sense. How Bayern needs to deal with this entire mess.As always, thanks for your support and let us know what you think!Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. 11 Oct 2021Bavarian Podcast Works Postgame Show: Germany beats North Macedonia 0-400:11:15
If there was ever going to be a barometer to measure if Hansi Flick’s Germany is indeed better than Joachim Löw’s Germany, it would be this. Under their former manager, Germany had lost to North Macedonia (albeit a North Macedonia with Goran Pandev); that loss was Germany’s first in roughly two decades in a World Cup qualifier. The opposition was the same today and as long as Romania was able to beat Armenia, what was at the stake for Germany was World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022.Hansi Flick made some notable changes. As Antonio Rüdiger was absent due to injury, he inserted Thilo Kehrer into the heart of the defense next to Niklas Süle, played David Raum in the left-back slot and replaced Jonas Hofmann with Lukas Klostermann for the right back slot. He also left out Leroy Sané in favor of Kai Havertz for this one.Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. 30 Nov 2023Bavarian Podcast Works: Weekend Warm-up Podcast Season 3, Episode 21 — Why is Bayern Munich scuffling (but winning) right now?; Is Florian Wirtz a player Bayern should invest heavily in?; and MORE!00:40:31

It has been a bit of a crazy week for Bayern Munich.

There was a boring win, followed by a more boring draw, but there was a whole of news in between, so in short, we have plenty to discuss.

Let’s take a look at that is on tap for this episode:

  • Why is Bayern Munich struggling right now. Is it Thomas Tuchel’s fault? Are the players underperforming? Is the squad flawed? Maybe...maybe not, but there is some reason to think it is bound to look better soon.
  • Does this version of Bayern Munich have a poor mentality?
  • Bayern Munich has been closely linked to Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz and could be the leader in the clubhouse to land the star....but does it make sense? Is he worth it? Let’s discuss.

26 Apr 2023Bavarian Podcast Works: Preview Show — Bayern Munich vs. Hertha Berlin (Bundesliga)00:25:13

Just a couple of months ago, it appeared unlikely that Bayern Munich would still be playing meaningful games at this point of the season.

Now, the team is fight for its Bundesliga life.

Sitting in second place, the Bavarians will have to fend off a hapless Hertha Berlin side, in hopes of not totally burying itself in the league. Let’s take a look at wat we have on tap for this episode:

  • A look at the Bundesliga standing and the recent form of both teams.
  • A complete guess at what Thomas Tuchel might do with his lineup for this match.
  • Some thoughts on how this is all unraveling and why it might not be easy to find a solution.

29 Oct 2022Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Bayern Munich 6-2 Mainz (Hinrunde)00:15:38
Well, that was quite something. Bayern Munich blew past Mainz in a spectacular 6-2 win that say the Bavarians barely break a sweat throughout the full 90. While two goals were conceded and Bo Svensson’s men can comfort themselves with a high xG number, the fact is that Julian Nagelsmann coached this game almost to perfection and Bayern look as good as ever, despite injuries to key players. Here are our talking points from the game:How Julian Nagelsmann’s midfield setup makes perfect sense for the team’s buildup and defense.Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano defending in concert.Noussair Mazraoui blossoming into a great inverted fullback. The problem with refereeing in the Bundesliga nowadays. How defensive injuries could derail Bayern Munich this season. Why Nagelsmann needs to give Mathys Tel and Ryan Gravenberch more minutes.Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. 14 Dec 2024Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Mainz 05 2-1 Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)00:31:48

Bayern Munich traveled to Mainz 05 for a Bundesliga showdown against a club that has been somewhat of a surprise in Germany this season.

The Bavarians were tired, weary, and lacked focus in a terrible first half that found them down 1-0 at the half, before ultimately succumbing to Mainz in a 2-1 defeat that was extremely frustrating.

Let’s talk about how it all went down and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show. This is what we have on tap:

  • A look at the starting XI and what it could mean for Laimer and Leon Goretzka.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
  • Injuries and a lack of rotation made Vincent Kompany’s men very fatigued and sloppy.
  • What else went wrong besides fatigue and sloppiness?
  • Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match.

Bayern Munich is rolling, Julian Nagelsmann is pushing all of the right buttons, and everything seems to be heading in the right direction for the Rekordmeister.Right about now is where you might be expecting some kind of pessimistic take on why the wheels are about to fall off, but — alas — things are too good for any doubt to start seeping into the podcast.Like every week, the boys from Bayern Munich are not boring, so there was a lot to talk about. 17 Nov 2024Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Germany 7-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina (UEFA Nations League)00:27:29

Hosted by Chuck Smith

The German national team destroyed Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-0 in a match that was just an all-out, thorough domination by the Germans from start to finish.

Jamal Musiala’s early goal set the tone for the match, which was as good as the team has looked under Julian Nagelsmann. Somehow — even in a terrific performance — Musiala did not end the game as Germany most impactful player (which tells you just how good Florian Wirtz was).

Needless to say, there was a ton to talk about. Here is what we have on tap for the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:

  • A look at the starting XI.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
  • Wirtz and Musiala are incredible.
  • Is the backline ready for a primetime showdown with a European power?

03 Dec 2021Bavarian Podcast Works: Preview Show — Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich (Der Klassiker)00:18:06
As another eventful year in football comes to a close, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund once again gear up for a game which is undoubtedly the biggest in German football. People may not like the name “Der Klassiker” because, technically, this game isn’t a classic derby — but you can’t deny that the fixture has a compelling enough history to be its own thing at this point. There’s never been a game between Bayern and BVB that is considered low-stakes, which is good for the fans because things never get boring. Here are our talking points ahead of the game:The situation with ghost games in Germany, and reports that the Klassiker may end up with limited capacity.Key absentees for both Bayern Munich and BVB, especially the situation with Joshua Kimmich. The return of Erling Haaland, and problems he could cause Bayern defense.Bayern’s issues with the midfield for this game, including reports that both Goretzka AND Kimmich could be out — who replaces them and what should we worry about? Why gegenpressing is Bayern’s kryptonite and how BVB could exploit that weakness. How Dortmund has fared this season, including the disappointing performances of Marco Rose.A final scoreline prediction for the game.As always, we love your feedback and appreciate all the support!Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. 28 Feb 2025Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: VfB Stuttgart 1-3 Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)00:38:28

Bayern Munich traveled to the MHP Arena to face VfB Stuttgart in a match that fell at a poor time for the Bavarians.

With the Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen just a few days away, Bayern Munich looked a bit out of sorts and distracted. When factoring in that Vincent Kompany used some combinations of players, who do not typically always play together, it made for some uneven play at times.

That said, Bayern Munich fought through some tough times, showed some resilience, and pulled away for a hard-fought 3-1 victory. Let’s talk about how it all went down and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show. This is what we have on tap:

  • A look at the starting XI - what worked and what didn’t.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
  • Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match.

20 Mar 2022Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Bayern Munich 4-0 Union Berlin (Ruckrunde)00:20:31
Make no mistake - Union Berlin are among the most defensively solid sides in the Bundesliga. In fact, they were ranked 4th best among all BuLi sides in the defensive aspects of football heading into this tie. Bayern Munich had other ideas.Nagelsmann’s choices seemed near-perfect in what was an absolute tactical masterclass and a dominant performance from the Bavarians. Union Berlin pressed ferociously and defended with everything they had in the early minutes, but quickly fell prey to the mean Bavarian attacking machine, getting hammered 4-0 in the process. Here are the talking points from the game:Union Berlin’s style of play, and how Nagelsmann countered itNianzou with a great performance... Stanisic quite solid, but still quite rawBayern’s brilliant attack, Lewandowski is unstoppableA very good defensive effort (and a CLEAN SHEET!!!!)Neuer’s underrated contributionsMidfield looking in control... It’s happened again. After an amazing start to the season, Bayern Munich have suffered a second consecutive draw to Union Berlin, putting an end to the perceived invincibility of this side. With Champions League games starting up again, it’s a very bad time for Julian Nagelsmann to hit a bump in the road. 26 Jun 2024Bavarian Podcast Works: Weekend Warm-up Show Season 3, Episode 50 — Bayern Munich’s wild transfer season is coming to light...who’s staying, who’s going, and why it feels like there is no plan; Germany is rolling, can it keep going?; and MORE!00:56:24

In the middle of the offseason, things should be slowing down, but for Bayern Munich and German national team fans, it was been, well, pretty darn wild.

The Bavarians are in the middle of what figures to be a crazy transfer period, while Germany has already looked better in a tourney than it has at any point since that last run under Joachim Löw at EURO 2020 (played in 2021) or maybe the first 10 games under Hansi Flick:

Now, though, it’s a new day for both Bayern Munich and Germany:

  • Chuck is back in the saddle! Find out what he has been up to and why he has been off the airwaves for a spell.
  • Germany put itself in a good position to consider this tourney run a success.
  • It is still early, but Chuck does not like the direction of Bayern Munich’s New World Order in the front office.
  • Are three center-backs really up for sale?
  • Fans who wanted change are going to get exactly what they were asking for.
  • Selling Kingsley Coman might not be easy.
  • Joshua Kimmich seems likely to leave this summer (or maybe in 2025), while Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry could just get frozen out until they want to leave.

18 Jul 2022Bavarian Podcast Works S5E3: How Robert Lewandowski leaving affects Bayern Munich (Transfers, tactics, and expectations)01:06:28
So it happened. Bayern Munich have sold Robert Lewandowski to FC Barcelona for a fee of around €45m guaranteed plus €5m in bonuses. With his departure, Bayern lose a striker who has scored 50+ goals a season for three seasons in a row. Without him, Julian Nagelsmann will have to find new solutions for the attack, while the transfer fee raises money to reinvest into the squad.Since this is a major discussion, we got three people together for only our second-ever three-person podcast. In this episode, INNN, Tom, and Schnitzel discuss:Our initial impressions on Lewandowski leaving the club. Can the striker pairing of Sadio Mane and Serge Gnabry make up for the loss of Lewy’s goals? The problems with the rumored 3-5-2 formation planned by Julian Nagelsmann.Schnitzel suggests a different formation that gives INNN conniptions. How Bayern can still operate a 4-2-3-1 with Sadio Mane as a lone striker.INNN’s take: Why the defense needs to be the focus for the upcoming season.Massive argument about formation fluidity and how to use Thomas Muller. What transfers do Bayern Munich have left in the window? Which transfers are still likely? Why Cristiano Ronaldo could still end up coming to Bayern.Closing thoughts — what are the expectations for Julian Nagelsmann in the upcoming season? Expected positions in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and the Champions League. If you guys like what you hear, PLEASE vote for us on the World Soccer Talk — Best Club Podcast award. 18 Jul 2023Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — FC Rottach-Egern 0-27 Bayern Munich00:16:54

That was a long period without Bayern Munich, wasn’t it?

The Rekordmeister are back, for the season 2023-24 and there’s a lot going on — from new players, to an interesting scenario involving who’s in-charge. Starting the season off with an easy game against FC Rottach-Egern, we won 27-0 (!!). Featuring the new additions Konrad Laimer and Raphael Guerreiro, the new era of Bayern looks rather exciting and we’re all in for it.

Here are our talking points from the game:

  • A quick recap of what went down last season, what’s different from then to now
  • Hype for the new transfers — Kim Min Jae, Laimer and Guerreiro
  • Opinions on Laimer and his role under Tuchel
  • Re-emphasis on Jamal Musiala’s qualities and how he has improved this season
  • Mathys Tel’s future at this club looks pretty good!
  • Marcel Sabitzer and an extended rant about his time here so far
  • Disappointment with Sadio Mane (and a slightly snarky remark)
  • Injuries galore!
  • First half vs second half — critiques, praise and whatnot

25 Dec 2023Bavarian Podcast Works S624: Could the European Super League be the end of Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga? + How football is changing + Dortmund’s epic collapse01:03:25

The Bundesliga may be on break this week but that doesn’t mean the drama will stop. After the European Court of Justice ruled against UEFA in favor of the European Super League, Bayern Munich were one of the first clubs to come out against the new competition and affirmed their commitment to the existing European football pyramid. However, with big clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona pushing for it plus FIFA looking for their own piece of the pie with the Club World Cup, can Bayern keep its place at the top of football for much longer?

In this episode, INNN and Samrin discuss the following:

  • The return of the European Super League — good or bad?
  • Why Premier League teams continue to refuse to join the Super League, and how it differs from Germany.
  • Isn’t the Premier League already becoming a Super League?
  • How UEFA and the top clubs across Europe brought this outcome on themselves.
  • How leagues can still block a Super League themselves.
  • Why teams like Madrid and Barca, plus the teams in Italy would probably not mind being banned from their league if they can play in the Super League.
  • How FIFA is trying to get a bigger slice of the pie with the revamped Club World Cup and the new World Cup format.
  • Is football headed for a Formula 1 style closed system?
  • Isn’t the situation in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich’s dominance an example of what football is headed towards?
  • Shouldn’t Bayern Munich also be held responsible for the current situation in European football?
  • Closing out with a look at the drama at Borussia Dortmund and what it means for the league.

Well that’s it. Bayern Munich have closed out 2022 with a 2-0 win over Schalke, a scoreline that is a lot less dramatic than what you’d expect when looking at the lineups of the respective sides.
