Kim Budde, Principal at Lakeville North HS, gives honest advice to band directors who may be considering a future in admin, reminding us of the unique skills all musicians have as potential leaders in their schools. Building community around any band programs is an important aspect of our work as band directors. We have two leaders from the Rosemount Band program that have a proven track record that can inspire us all. Leon Sieve joined the faculty of Rosemount High School, Rosemount, Minnesota in the fall of 2002 and is in his 27th year of teaching instrumental music. Leon received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota in May, 1993 and a masters degree from the American Band College at Southern Oregon University, Ashland, Oregon in July, 2005. His responsibilities at Rosemount High School include the direction of two of the seven concert ensembles, woodwind specialist for the band program, team teaching the fall marching band, woodwind chamber ensembles, winter pep band, jazz ensembles, solos and ensembles, and designing and choreographing the award winning RHS Color Guard. John Zschunke attended the university of Minnesota; graduated in 1978; taught in St. Francis, Minnesota from 1978 to 1990; received my Masters degree from the University of Minnesota in 1988; began teaching in the Rosemount school district in 1990; presently teaching at Rosemount Middle School grades six through eight band and serves as conductor of the Rosemount Community Band. Cait Nishimura & Salvador Jacobo - two young composers (both in their 20’s) who have already written several very popular pieces of band music. In particular, Cait’s “Chasing Sunlight” and Sal’s “Vuelo” have been programmed by many band directors in Minnesota in the past two years. We wanted to know what it’s like to be a young composer from a demographic that is typically underrepresented in band music, and why their music has become especially popular in Minnesota. Additionally, we talk about the challenges of composing during a pandemic and what lies ahead. In many ways, this is also a continuation of Episode 18, “Quality Music of Diversity,” with Brian Lukkasson and Nora Tycast. CAIT NISHIMURA (b.1991) is a Canadian composer, songwriter, and music educator based in Toronto. Known for writing melody-driven, programmatic music, Cait has quickly established herself as a prominent voice in the concert band community. With influences from minimalism and pop music, her work is full of simple yet lush harmonies, and themes that linger in listeners’ minds. A lifelong nature-lover, she draws inspiration from the beauty of the natural world and aims to transport listeners to the landscapes she writes about. Her music has been presented at The Midwest Clinic, MusicFest Canada, and numerous other conferences and festivals across North America. In 2019, the Ontario Band Association commissioned her work Intrinsic Light in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Ontario Music Educators Association. Her best-selling piece Chasing Sunlight was the winner of the 2017 Canadian Band Association’s composition competition. SALVADOR ALAN JACOBO (b. 1997) is a Mexican-American composer. Salvador has composed music for an array of musical settings from wind ensembles to brass ensembles to marching bands and everything in between. His compositions have acquired attention from notable composers such as John Mackey. His compositions have also been played by prestigious ensembles such as the Dallas Winds (Brass and Percussion). Salvador has also been the guest conductor for various bands such as the Portales Junior High Band, the Portales High School Band, and the 30th Biennial Eastern New Mexico University Alumni Band. Salvador is also a brother of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity (Theta Zeta chapter). Eric Songer (Chaska Middle School West) is one of the state's most prominent band directors! He joins us to talk about his passion for teaching popular music through a variety of (for lack of a better term) "modern band" emphasis in his teaching. His school features a variety of bands including rock, hip hop, country and bluegrass, and much more. He teaches lessons in DJ technique, songwriting, music history, theory, and more. Of course, he also directs concert bands and jazz bands, too. According to Songer, this is the future of music education and his vision is being embraced by more and more teachers and schools in our state and around the country. He's best known as Founder of the Dallas Brass, but Michael Levine has another passion: the Harmony Bridge Project, a flexible ensemble music method for middle school and HS students. We enjoy so many talented musicians in our state, but Levine is definitely one of Minnesota’s mavericks. He is originally from St. Louis Park, MN, and was a music major at the University of Minnesota before transferring to The Juilliard School where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Trombone Performance. The next 4 years were spent playing in the Jerusalem (Israel) Symphony Orchestra. Upon his return to the states, he went to Dallas, TX where he started the Dallas Brass. Then in 2010 he launched Harmony Bridge (which is our focus today). Life’s first experiences are always full of possibility. In this episode we hear from two first year Minnesota band directors, their joys and challenges as they begin their careers. Brenna Sherman is a first year band director at Princeton Middle School in Princeton Minnesota. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah IA. While at Luther College she participated in the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Collegiate Chorale, Competitive Ballroom and Swing team, and the Future Music Educators Association. In her final year she was fortunate to complete her student teaching at the Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, South Korea. She has received the Earl C. Benson Concerto Competition Scholarship, Minnesota All-State Music Scholarship, “Become” Award, Weston Noble Instrumental Music Excellence Scholarship, Forde-Preus Music Scholarship, John H. Monson International Education Scholarship, and the Presser Foundation Scholarship. She has enjoyed her first year of teaching immensely and cannot wait to see what wonderful moments of teaching are in store. Noah Grothe is a first year instrumental music educator at Levi P. Dodge Middle School in Farmington, MN. He graduated with a degree in Music Education from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, and taught both band and math as a long-term substitute before accepting his current position in Farmington. Noah has performed on the bass trombone with multiple ensembles in the Northfield area, and is otherwise musically active in his local church setting. Noah currently resides in Northfield, MN with his wife Morgan and 10 month old daughter Atarah. Ellen Dinwiddie Smith has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 1993 and currently serves as third horn. Smith is Adjunct Professor of Horn at the University of Minnesota and has served as Young-Artist-Program faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music Summerfest since 2015. Smith is a 1987 graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Myron Bloom and was a member of the Curtis Wind Quintet, a top prize winner in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. Prior to studies at Curtis, Smith attended the Juilliard School and the University of Texas at Austin. Her teachers include Myron Bloom, Wayne Barrington, Greg Hustis and Michael Hatfield. While still a student at Curtis, she was named third horn of the Charleston (South Carolina) Symphony Orchestra and later joined the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra as co-principal horn. She has performed at the Spoleto USA, Waterloo, Chautauqua, Colorado Philharmonic, National Repertory Orchestra and Aspen summer music festivals. Co-directors Nora Tycast and Brian Lukkasson have been featured on NPR, The Washington Post, and MPR thanks to their unyielding effort to program excellent music written by composers of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. We are very proud of this week's episode, "Quality Music of Diversity" with Nora Tycast and Brian Lukkasson. We also want our listeners to know that this episode was recorded prior to the murder of George Floyd and the events that followed. To give additional perspective to this topic, Brian and Nora have provided the statement below. "We are grateful and honored to share some of our work from the past 5 years with you on the newest episode of Band in Minnesota podcast. The topic of “diversifying” repertoire is not new, but after the May 25th murder of George Floyd and the public outrage at continued police brutality against communities of color there has been an increased interest in programming composers of color. While we are encouraged by this interest we ask that all educators (including us) pause and reflect on their role in spreading racism through superficial action or worse, in-action. "This is not a moment to program a “Black Lives Matter” concert to justify any anger, sadness, or embarrassment. This is a time for deep, personal reflection on how we must change what and how we teach. All of our students should see themselves AND people not like themselves held up as innovators and creators in our classrooms. Our ensembles should be where the music of our black and brown students is held up as equal art and where the missing narratives of our education system can have a more than equal voice and powerful elevation. This is not a “One and Done” movement, but an opportunity for systematic change for our students' benefit. An important practical matter for band directors - and parents: what are basic instrument repair tricks that band directors can do on their own - and what types of repairs should parents avoid? Joining us today is Mark Kuklok, the owner of MK Music Repair in Owatonna MN. Mark Kuklok Upon graduating from high school, I wanted to go into music education so in 1987 I obtained a Music Education degree from North Dakota State University. I taught band for two years in Wheaton, Minnesota. After this I decided teaching band wasn’t for me and as I have always had a passion for working with my hands, I figured repairing instruments was a way to use my degree and do more “hands on” work. In the fall of 1990, I attended Redwing Technical College, now Minnesota State College Southeast, Redwing Campus graduating the following Spring with a degree in Band Instrument Repair. My first job repairing instruments was at a shop Mankato. I did this for eight years where I gained valuable experience and honed my craft. In the Fall of 2000, I opened MK Music Repair in Owatonna and I have been here ever since. In my normal day-to-day operations, I travel two days a week where I call on 36 different schools. The other 3 days I am in the shop. Facilities age and new schools are built. If you are a band director fortunate enough to be faced with new construction or renovations what so you do? Who do you turn to for information? Our two guests today have firsthand knowledge of the process. This conversation will provide you a check-list of things to do or think about for renovations or new construction of music facilities. Tark Katzenmeyer has taught for 18 years in both Minnesota and Florida, with teaching experience at the Middle School Level and the High School Level. He has directed the bands at Woodbury High School for seven academic years. An advocate of chamber music, Tark has done extensive research of effective implementation of chamber music into a high school band program, and believes in the power of small group musicianship. An active performer, Tark has played performances with the Minnesota Symphonic Winds, the Bloomington Medalist Concert Band, the Florida Wind Band, the Southern Winds, the VanderCook College of Music Jazz Ensemble, and various chamber music organizations. Dave Lumley is the Director of Bands at Sartell-St. Stephen High School. Prior to this position he was the Band Director at Cambridge-Isanti HS from 2007-2011. At Sartell he directs two HS Bands, the 8th Grade Band, two Jazz Bands, Pep Band, and the Summer Marching Band. He has served as the Minnesota Music Educators Association Region 8AA Representative since 2018. How might general music fit into a high school music curriculum? Do all music programs reflect the student population of schools? If you are curious about these questions, or just want to hear more about these topics and more, then this episode of Band in Minnesota is for you! Sarah Minette (BME, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, MAME, University of St. Thomas, and PhD, Arizona State University) is a music educator at Minneapolis South High School and adjunct faculty at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. Sarah’s 16 year career includes teaching middle school band, jazz band, marching band, and most recently, secondary general music. At the University of St. Thomas, Sarah teaches graduate and undergraduate music education classes. Sarah was recently awarded a Music Education Innovator grant from the Give a Note Foundation for her work at South High that focuses on providing as many music making opportunities for students as possible.   Sarah’s research interests include gender and sexuality in music education, access and equity in music education, and secondary general music education. Sarah has presented her research at local and national venues, including the National Association for Music Education Research Conference, the Feminist Theory and Music Conference, the MayDay Colloquium, the International Conference on Narrative Inquiry, the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium, and the New Directions Conference. Sarah was recently appointed as the secondary music education chair of the Minnesota Music Educators Association and serves as the equity chair for the Minnesota Band Directors Association. This week: an important practical matter for band directors and arts administrators. A lack of instrument inventory to insure every child has access to instrumental music is not a new problem. With limited budgets, sharing instruments has long been a needed practice for many instrumental programs, especially larger instruments like tubas and baritone saxophones. With COVID-19 instrument sharing is no longer a safe practice without considerable protocols. This podcast will address the challenges of Instrument sharing and possible short-term and longer-term solutions. To discuss this topic we are joined by two excellent music educators, Michelle Hoff and Peter Guenther. Michelle Hoff has been teaching in ISD 196 for the past twenty-three years. She has taught a variety of levels and is currently teaching grade 5 band at Rosemount Elementary and Parkview Elementary. She has also been running the Band for All instrument donation program for seven years that supports students in financial need by providing a band instrument. Band for All is currently supporting 800+ students in all 29 schools in ISD 196. In thirteen years, over 1,900 students have participated in band because of Band for All. Peter Guenther is Director of Bands at Owatonna High School. Previous to this position he was the director of junior and senior high bands at Lake City High School from 1993 to 2001. At Owatonna High School, Mr. Guenther conducts three concert bands, the marching band, and jazz ensemble. He holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Winona State University. In 2010, he was honored by his colleagues as Owatonna Teacher of the Year. I believe the future of music education in Minnesota is in good hands. In this special episode we have a new host, Evah Engel from the University of Minnesota. She steps in to talk with other college students about challenges they face as future music educators. In the words of composer Erik Stokes, “Music is a Social Art.” In this episode we visit with Dr. Peter Haberman, Director of Bands as Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota about the Concordia Band program and their history and tradition of “Band as Family.” Dr. Peter Haberman’s Background Peter Haberman serves as the director of bands and associate professor of music at Concordia College, where he conducts The Concordia Band. He also leads the Echo Band, works with student conductors, teaches music education courses and coordinates the comprehensive band program. Prior to his appointment at Concordia, Haberman held similar positions as director of bands at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Bucknell University. Haberman maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and clinician across North America. His ensembles have performed at conferences and music festivals across the nation and internationally. He also has served as music director for many community ensembles including the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony. Prior to his college career, Haberman spent several years teaching at the Mercer Island School District in Washington and the Maple Lake School District in Minnesota. He was honored to be the recipient of the Educator of the Year Award and the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Teaching at Mercer Island, and the Maple Lake Employee of the Year Award. Haberman is an active board member for the Minnesota Band Directors Association. He is also a member of the College Band Directors National Association, Minnesota Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, and World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. His honorary memberships include Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha, and Pi Kappa Lambda. A native of Minnesota, he has earned degrees from Concordia College, the University of Montana, and the University of Minnesota, where he completed a Doctor of Music Arts in conducting. Haberman lives in Moorhead, Minnesota, with his wife, Erika Tomten, and their daughter, Claire. I hope that you enjoy this conversation! For this episode we traveled to rural Minnesota, Kenyon-Wanamingo School District to speak with a passionate music educator and band director by the name of Claire Larson. Claire Larson’s Background Claire grew up in Aurora Illinois where she was part of a vibrant band program. She graduated from the St. Olaf College with a degree in K-12 instrumental music education. She also earned a Master’s degree in music education from the University of Minnesota. Claire student taught in Farmington, Minnesota and started her career in North Minneapolis at Patrick Henry High School. She also taught ins New Prague and Brooklyn Center before landing in her current position in Kenyon-Wanamingo in 2010 where she teaches grades 5 -12. After spending just a few hours with Claire it became very clear that she is an innovator and risk taker. She has enlisted an entire community in the pursuit of education. I say education because she is very interested in the whole student through her subject matter of music. You will hear excerpts from her students at all age levels and her administrator. These interviews were recorded independently from one another with remarkable similarity. Clearly everyone; students, faculty and administration in Kenyon-Wanamingo are on the same page! It’s Tuesday, March 24, 2020 and here we are in the middle of a pandemic. To help us get through this challenging time here are some thoughts and ideas. In the words of composer Eric Stokes, “Music is a Social Art.” You know much of what we do as creative musicians is done in solitude; individual practicing, composing and for me as a conductor, score study. In fact, there is nothing better than a cup of coffee, a silent place and a score, this is where my musical imagination can run free as I work to ingest the music. Yet with COVID-19 and our inability to gather, there is a void for all of us. Our feelings and experiences together in rehearsal rooms and on stages cannot be replicated. This absence has reminded me of the power and beauty of our art. I look forward to the time when we can once again be together in the celebration of life and music!
