11 Feb 2022EP 044 // Announcing Our First Event, Iceboy Violet, Aircode & Grey Code01:09:03

In this episode of Awake All Hours, we announce our first party at Spanners, Brixton and give our thoughts on the experience so far from the perspective of a trio of promoter newbies! - Ali begs everyone to come and Will and George threaten to operate a Berghain-esque entry policy / compulsory electronic music trivia quiz on arrival. It’s all under control.

We follow up by sharing our experiences at recent club events, featuring an All Centre takeover at the afore mentioned Spanners, the debuts of Joy Orbison and Batu’s ‘Just For You’ & ‘Tunnelvision’ parties, and a blissful deep listening session with Sybil, Dan Nicholls, Lou Zon & BMO at Strange Brew.

We then dive into album reviews which features a highly-anticipated debut full-length from Manchester’s Iceboy Violet, a subtle and intricate experimental club record by Aircode and Grey Code’s new 4K ultra HD drum and bass epic for Metalheadz!

We finish, as ever, with What’s In My Bandcamp Basket, highlighting our favourite new compilations and EPs!

20 May 2022EP 050 // Reflecting on Fifty Episodes & Awake All Hours' Greatest Hits01:11:49

Nothing's changed in fifty episodes, as we have plenty of giggles, music chit-chat, navigate dodgy internet connection and deal with a leaking roof...

In this episode, we put our usual programming on hold to get rather sentimental and nostalgic about running this humble DIY podcast for just over two years and fifty episodes! We begin by discussing some of our favourite moments as a podcast and our hopes for the future, before getting stuck into Awake All Hours’ Greatest Hits - starting with some honourable mentions before each highlighting five of our favourite ever releases covered on the show, featuring aya, Lyra Pramuk, Manni Dee, Wordcolour, Krust and many more!

As always, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has listened and contributed to Awake All Hours in any way. Cheers and see you at 100!

20 Jun 2022INSIGHTS 014 // WORDCOLOUR - 'The trees were buzzing, and the grass'01:07:06

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by Nick Worrall, a London-based producer, DJ and media composer who releases music under the pseudonym Wordcolour. His music is a collage of vibrant, detailed, cinematic sound design, mind-bending breakbeat chops and gut punching bass. At every turn in a Wordcolour track, you can hear influence from classical music, minimalism, film soundtracks and, of course, the contemporary scene of bass-oriented UK electronic music. His new album ‘The trees were buzzing, and the grass’ is set to be released on June 24th. We’ve been following Nick’s work since his EP ‘Juno Way’ dropped back in 2020, and couldn’t have been more excited to hear that a full length was on the way.

Over the course of this interview, we discuss Nick’s formative experiences, including childhood radio experiments, being introduced to ‘Kid A’ and ‘Homogenic’ and playing in a band with Angus Finlayson aka Minor Science. We then move onto Nick’s creative output, discussing ‘Juno Way’ and his relationship with the Fabric-affiliated Houndstooth records before doing the deep-dive on his startling and cinematic new album! Nick gives an insight into his production process, approach to sampling, collaborating with vocalist Natasha Lohan and percussionist Michael Anklin, his fascination with foley and sound mixing in film and the influence this has on his music. We finish by discussing Nick’s plans for the future, his new live set and some of his favourite current music, which you can support via the Buy Music Club link below.

Special thanks to Nick Worrall and Houndstooth for allowing the use of clips from 'Blossom' and 'Cloud Room' in this episode.

20 Jul 2022INSIGHTS 015 // BABY BLUE - The Canadian Scene, ‘End Of Sleep’, Sampling, Trance & Detroit Techno01:02:53

What happens if you combine Crystal Castles, Bark Psychosis, Claude Young, L.S.G, Daft Punk, Tiësto and Deftones? You get ‘End Of Sleep’ by Baby Blue!

Sophia Briggs is the mind behind an album that really peaked our interest earlier this year - a sort of mid-90’s trance dream shot through the nightmare of the beginning of the start of the pandemic in 2020. After sharing some laughs over an Alanis Morisette comparison and having our interest peaked even further after discovering the album is constructed of no less than 500 samples, we new we had to invite Sophia on the show, which she kindly accepted!

Over the course of this interview, we discuss Sofia’s early years, getting into DJing, the Canadian music scene and her involvement in running the party s.M.i.L.e. We then move onto Sofia’s relationship with Planet Euphorique, the story behind ‘End Of Sleep’, her approach to sampling, production techniques and her vast pool of influences, from the likes of Detroit masters such as Claude Young and John Beltran, mid 90-s & early 2000’s Tresor records, Trance, Electro and Electro Clash. We finish by discussing Sofia’s plans for the future and some of her favourite current music, which you can support via the Buy Music Club link below.

Special thanks to Sofia Briggs and Planet Euphorique for allowing the use of clips from ‘Lineman’ and ‘Plastic Glass Wall’ at the beginning and end of this episode.

EDIT: Hyd's pronouns are they/them, however, we mistakenly use she/her in multiple instances during our review of 'CLEARING'. We sincerely apologise for the oversight here.

20 Jan 2023INSIGHTS 018 // BRUCE - Hessle Audio & Livity Sound, XRA, Live Set & TURN ’2301:26:04

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we have the privilege of being joined by a true stalwart of the UK bass music scene. If you’ve been paying even the slightest bit of attention over the years to that signature strain of wonky, skewed, bass driven techno, as purveyed by seminal labels such as Hessle Audio, Timedance, Livity Sound, Hemlock and Idle Hands, you will certainly be familiar with Bruce, who boasts a slew of landmark releases on all of the aforementioned imprints. We look back over his incredible career as well as discussing some extremely exciting new projects, most notably his new party TURN ’23 which debuts at Strange Brew in Bristol on the Saturday 28th January with an absolutely ludicrous cast of greats from across the electronic music spectrum - DJ Marcelle, Nazar, Shelley Parker, Biped, Sybil, Aura Tekh and of course, Bruce himself.

Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing Larry’s early years and formative experiences, meeting Ploy and Batu whilst studying at Bath Uni, moving to Bristol, the city's club culture and how two emails from Ben UFO and Peverelist in 2014 springboard his production career. We then discuss some of his career-highlights, both as a producer and DJ before moving onto his current projects - XRA with fellow Timedance and Hessle Audio heavyweight, Lurka, as well as his new solo live set. We conclude by talking about his Get Loose parties, before previewing his tantalising forthcoming event TURN ’23!

We are giving away three tickets for TURN ’23 to one lucky winner! Head over to www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/ for details.

03 Feb 2023INSIGHTS 019 // AIRCODE - 'Grounded', Alien Jams & Creating a Unique Sound00:44:45

In this episode, we are really thrilled to be joined by a truly singular producer and an artist we have been extremely fond of for a while now on the show, following two standout EPs for Nostro Hood System and Alien Jams. Almost exactly a year ago to the day, aircode dropped her stunning debut album 'Grounded', also on Alien Jams. These records all showcased a truly unique and otherworldly approach to what you may broadly call soundsystem music, however, that doesn't quite do it justice.

Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing Julia's early years and formative experiences, living in Gothenburg and moving to London before diving deep into her influences, creative process and the making of 'Grounded' for the album's one year anniversary!

We are giving away a copy of 'Grounded' on digipack CD! Head over to www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/ for details.

Special thanks to Julia for allowing the use of clips from 'Spores' and 'Krypin' at the beginning and end of this episode.

03 Mar 2023INSIGHTS 020 // VENUS EX MACHINA - Maths, Music, Machines & Meaning01:29:45

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by someone that we’ve been wanting to get on the show since her incredible debut album ‘Lux’ that came out in 2021 on podcast favourite label AD 93. London-based interdisciplinary artist, Venus Ex Machina’s music sits on that beautiful line between rich, organic composition and toughened, analogue techno, inspired by mathematics, machines and meaning. Having just recently dropped the spellbinding follow up, ‘Doxa’, in November last year, we couldn't wait to hear her story and learn about her process.

Nonto's answers are as rich and detailed as her music, spanning history, language, philosophy, psychology, mechanics, mysticism and lots more. Sit back and enjoy this fascinating interview with one of underground electronic music's most exciting artists.

We will be giving away a copy of both 'Lux' and 'Doxa' on vinyl - Head over to www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/ for details.

Clips of 'Zeus and Metis' and 'Crush' from the album 'Doxa' on AD 93 are used at the beginning and end of this podcast.

07 Apr 2023Musical Musings // Why There's No Better Time To Get Into Drexciya (Tresor Reissues)00:44:41

Hello dear Awake All Hours listeners, Ali speaking. To kill some time and fill some of the gaps between our regular show, I humbly present to thee my 'musical musings' (or potentially the ramblings of a madman we'll see). This will be a little space outside of our regular programming for me to share some extra thoughts on music I've been digging and speak to you all directly, how exciting!

In this first edition, I wanted to highlight the recent Tresor reissues of classics from the Drexciya back catalogue, amongst other Drexciya related side projects, and why there's no time like the present to do the deep dive on one of electronic music's most important and influential acts.

24 Apr 2023INSIGHTS 021 // OCEANIC - Choral Feeling, Community and the Connective Power of Singing01:09:56

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by the ultra-talented Dutch DJ / producer, Oceanic, who has taken the world of underground dance music by storm over the past decade or so with his unique brand of rich, tactile experimental techno and ambient. With the bulk of his recent work finding a snug fit and family home on his brother Oberman’s impeccable Nous’klaer Audio imprint, a podcast and peoples favourite, his startling new album, ‘Choral Feeling’, released in January this year saw Oceanic create a beautiful piece of work with a refined focus on connection and the human voice, ingeniously sampling over 30 of his friends singing and weaving them into his compositions.

Over the course of this interview, Job begins by discussing his early years growing up in the Netherlands, formative musical experiences that include British Indie Bands and the German deep house sound of the late 2000’s and how the Dutch scene has evolved over the past decade to become a jewel in the European and global electronic music circuits. He then goes on to share the incredible story and process behind his album ‘Choral Feeling’, before finishing with some record selections and an overview of his upcoming projects and gigs, including a debut Live audio-visual set at this years’ Dekmantel Festival.

We will be giving away a copy of ‘Choral Feeling’ and companion EP ‘Choral Dance’ on vinyl - Head over to www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/ for details.

14 Jun 2023EP 069 // 'ONE HOUSE - THE BADDEST OF THEM ALL' by Works Of Intent01:00:58

We dedicate this episode of Awake All Hours to discussing the Works Of Intent essay, 'ONE HOUSE - THE BADDEST OF THEM ALL'.

READ: https://worksofintent.com/onehouse/

In Roshan’s own words - ‘In this new piece I explain how the industry uses ethnic meat shields, artist-as-saviour rhetoric, faux solutions and fabricated communities to ensure that since the 2020 Minneapolis uprising against police brutality, very little has materially changed in the dance music industry for marginalised communities.

One House are the perfect case study in understanding how Anglo-Pessimism, a faux anti-racist ideology has taken over.

In the end I offer a future framework for real marginalised communities to own the means of their success in the industry and shut out the Anglo-Pessimist gaze.’

The essay is essential reading, particularly if you have even the slightest interest in electronic music and club culture. We just about manage to scratch the surface of the detail and ideas displayed and hope that the thoughts and perspectives shared in this discussion may make our listeners aware of matters often obscured beneath the surface, but ultimately, encourage you to read the essay if you haven’t already, take it on board and share it with your peers.

Special thanks to Works of Intent for his dedication to his work and for reaching out to us.

Will Yates is a genius self-taught composer and multi-instrumentalist. 14 Aug 2023INSIGHTS 023 // DOUBLE O - Origins, Rupture, ‘Firm Meditation’ & Jungle Across the Ages01:22:32

Every once in a while, we have the honour of welcoming a true stalwart and legend of electronic music to the show, and this is most certainly one of those episodes. Long-established DJ and producer David ‘Dubz’ Henry aka Double O is the co-founder of the world-renowned and respected Rupture, the people’s favourite jungle and drum & bass label and party, alongside life partner and fellow legendary selector and producer, Indra ‘Indi’ Khera aka Mantra. David is just coming off the back of releasing his landmark debut album ‘Firm Meditation’ on the label, an outstanding body of work that, like Rupture itself, spans the full breadth of styles in jungle and drum & bass, merging the old-school with the cutting-edge.

Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing David’s early years growing up in Doncaster, formative sounds and clubbing experiences including acid and Detroit techno DJ Gary Woods at Clouds and Sheffield bleep pioneer Winston Hazel, as well as becoming a resident at Doncaster venue The Warehouse from 1991 to 1997. Next, we discuss his move to London after becoming disenfranchised with the phasing out of jungle at some of the northern venues, meeting Indi and starting Rupture, reflecting on nearly 17 years of running the party and label, the Rupture sound and highlights from their back-catalogue, plus tonnes of exciting exclusive news on forthcoming releases! We then have an in-depth discussion on the making of ‘Firm Mediation’, influences, gear and production techniques, before finishing with what’s been in David’s Bandcamp basket and some Rupture party anthems from over the years.

We will be giving away a copy of ‘Firm Meditation’ on vinyl to coincide with this interview - Head over to www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/ for details.

In this episode of INSIGHTS, I have the utter pleasure of sitting down with one of the most extraordinary and well-respected percussionists and composers of our era. Valentina Magaletti's singular hypnotic rhythms are the driving force behind a staggering amount of musical projects, including Vanishing Twin, Moin, Holy Tongue, Tomaga and, most recently, V/Z and CZN. She has also worked with the likes of Lafawndah, upsammy, Mica Levi, Sampha, Kamasi Washington, and Nicolas Jaar, as well as stalwarts of the experimental underground scene like Gnod’s Marlene Ribeiro and  Wire’s Graham Lewis, even participating in The Can Project at London’s Barbican Centre in 2017.

Over the course of this interview, Valentina discusses using the drums as a vehicle for self-expression, the importance of channeling varied conversations via different musical projects, her musical influences ranging from Velvet Underground and Art Blakey to J Dilla and Sonia Pottinger, writing and performing with Vanishing Twin, Moin, Holy Tongue, V/Z, CZN and what the future has in store for each project. To finish, Valentina discuss her and her partner’s new label and micro-publisher Permanent Draft and their forthcoming book documenting over two thousand female, trans and non-binary artists in experimental music, pursuing a career as a full time musician and some current favourite Bandcamp picks!

05 Sep 2023INSIGHTS 025 // MINOR SCIENCE - ‘Absent Friends’, the Making of an Anthem, Stripe N Co & the Harder Faster Trend01:17:21

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by Angus Finlayson aka Minor Science, one of our favourite DJs and producers and someone we’ve hoped to have on the show for actual years since 2020’s best of year list topping album ’Second Language’. To coincide with the imminent and highly anticipated release of his second album entitled ‘Absent Friends Vol. III’, Angus joins us to discuss music, the creative process and perhaps even address his alleged invovlement with and reluctant mentorship of mysterious gremlin edit-masters STRIPE N CO…

Over the course of this interview, Angus begins by discussing his landmark debut album ‘Second Language’, how we relate to music made during lockdown, connecting music to moments and the story, creation and concept of one of this year’s biggest club anthems ‘Workahol’. We then have an in-depth discussion on the creative process behind his new album, the ‘Absent Friends’ concept and live set and looking beyond the immediate context of the music you are making for inspiration. To conclude, Angus discusses the exponential rise in appreciation and demand for harder and faster genres of dance music and their working-class roots, Stripe N Co as a project, making music as a character and how it has impacted his production more broadly.

His new concept mini-album ‘Hailstone King’, based on a short story of the same name and drawing on themes such as grief, masculinity, mental health, identity, and legacy really captured our imagination and saw a startling and impressive update to his sound, combining luxurious club sonics and crystalline modern pop inspired by the likes of FKA twigs and Fever Ray.

Over the course of this interview, Gabriel begins by discussing his experience studying at BIMM in Bristol, moving to Berlin, the city's DIY scene and the impact it had on him creatively before talking in-depth about the themes, imagery, stylistic influences, sonic references and creative process on 'Hailstone King' and his new live show. 15 Feb 2024INSIGHTS 030 // NYKSAN - TraTraTrax: The Story So Far, Latin America's Ambient Scene, Alchemy & Metaverses00:59:36

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by Nyksan, a mastermind behind one of the most influential labels of this decade, Colombia’s TraTraTrax, alongside Verraco and DJ Lomalinda. Back in 2020, while the label was still in its infancy, we had the pleasure of interviewing Verraco to coincide with the release of his album ‘Grial’ on Insurgentes. We could never have predicted TraTraTrax’s trajectory then. In the space of just three and a half years, the label has curated an era-defining roster of artists and releases, from the likes of Nick León, DJ Babatr, Bitter Babe, Luca Duran, Doctor Jeep, Badsista and many more, putting the breadth and brilliance of Latin America’s music and culture at the centre, whilst also plotting a course via Africa and Europe. We are so excited to discuss the past, present and future of the world-beating imprint, as well his solo endeavours, with the one and only Nicolás Sánchez!

Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing the story of TraTraTrax so far, talking about the label’s origins, writing their own story, an unwavering approach to quality, significant releases and the unknown tale behind the monumental track of 2022, ‘Xtasis’, their passionate and dedicated approach to curating remixes, bucket-list remixers and expanding with the latest in their annual compilation series 'no pare, sigue sigue 2' (don’t stop, keep moving). We also discuss TraTraTrax’s Dekmantel 2023 showcase, the label’s reaction to their reception in Europe and doing things on their own terms while giving something back to their community.

Next, we discuss what Nico is up to in his spare time between running the label, which includes working for a quantum computing company, his sprawling ambient project ‘Sacrificio’ with collaborators Juan David Figueroa, Carlos Serrano and Daniel Brusatin, creating sound installations, metaverses and, finally, TraTraTrax’s new ambient sublabel Ambie—Tón.

We conclude by discussing plans for TraTraTrax's future, including twelve new releases already on the map, another new banger orientated series and showcases and parties all over the world!

Clips of 'Aló ma' by Nyksan and Moa Pillar from the compilation 'no pare, sigue sigue 2', as well as 'Jardin privé' by Nyksan from the EP 'Sacrificio', are used at the beginning and end of this podcast.

We also discussed Felipe's excellent forthcoming releases on his own Matter Of Time Records and young Parisian label Deviant Episode, production techniques and the process of creating music in a variety of different styles, Brazil's response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and hopes for the future.

Nørus also blessed us with a stunning mix which you can find on our Soundcloud, showcasing some of the sounds and feelings, both dark and beautiful, behind his alter-ego // Awk-all-hrs – Guest-mix-002-norus-abysmal
