24 Mar 2022 | SHIELDING is Healing | 00:49:48
Welcome to Episode 92 of the Autism Parenting Secrets. When a baby is on the way, parents make upgrades to the house to ensure it’s ready for their child. Similarly, if you have a child on the spectrum, there’s an important opportunity to make changes that provide a safer and less stressful environment for you, your child, and your entire family. We do so much to ensure our homes are safe. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, childproof locks, handrails for stairs, etc. Visible hazards are easy to spot and fix. Invisible hazards are tougher. They’re easier to overlook. One big example: the significantly increasing danger from excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). So if a healing house is what you’re after, reducing EMF exposure is a must. And the bedroom is where you focus first. Our guest this week is Brian Hoyer. He’s one of the world's top EMF mitigation specialists. He founded Shielded Healing in 2017 with the goal of helping modern humanity recreate electromagnetic environments that more closely mimic our historic human habitats to promote health and healing. Taking action isn’t as difficult as you might think. And the benefits are real and they compound daily. The secret this week is... SHIELDING is Healing

27 Jul 2023 | Peanut Allergies AREN’T Random | 01:01:53
Welcome to Episode 162 of Autism Parenting Secrets. This episode focuses on the epidemic of allergies in children. Our guest this week is Heather Fraser, an advocate for holistic health & health choice and author of The Peanut Allergy Epidemic. This discussion explores the many factors that gave rise to the sudden and increasing prevalence of allergies in children. Our journey to support our son involved both moderate/severe autism and life-threatening allergies, especially to peanuts. In many ways, the peanut allergy was the greater challenge. And we know it wasn’t bad luck that our son has a peanut allergy and many others. The secret this week is … Peanut Allergies AREN’T Random
Heather Fraser is a health choice advocate and author of The Peanut Allergy Epidemic. Its third edition features a foreword by another allergy parent, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. From Heather… Some experiences can change the course of your life completely. In 1995, this happened to me when my one-year-old child reacted violently to a taste of peanut butter. We sought treatments such as were available at the time and urgently adapted to a state of hypervigilance. I studied nutrition and energy-based modalities looking for ways to recover. At the same time, I scoured the medical literature. I wanted to know what had happened, how and why my child and, by the late 90s, scores of other children had suddenly become atopic and anaphylactic to common foods. Today, I am an advocate for holistic health and health choice. My studies have included BodyTalk, Quantum Touch, iridology, bioenergetics, and nutrition through IHN (Toronto). I have a special interest in consciousness-based practice. In this context, I make two muscle testing tools that are available through Ergopathics. In 2017, the third edition of my book The Peanut Allergy Epidemic was published with a foreword by another allergy parent and friend, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and a preface by my child, Cat Fraser-Boychuk. This book is a deep dive into the complex and deeply challenging world of health politics. In addition to studies in health, I hold an MA in Art History from Queen's University and two undergrad degrees in Art History and Education from Western University.

06 Jul 2023 | Don’t Tolerate MINERAL Deficiencies | 00:46:45
Welcome to Episode 159 of Autism Parenting Secrets. This week, we focus on minerals, one of those essential building blocks of health. Our guest is Jeff Thurston from Master Supplements and U.S. Enzymes. Perhaps the biggest mistake a parent can make is to think that the food their child is eating doesn’t matter. That it won’t make a difference. The right nourishing food matters a lot. It profoundly impacts our physical health and wellness, our resilience, how we think and how we behave, and the emotions we feel. All likely things that you are wanting to improve for yourself and your child. Food is not about calories - it’s about nourishment. Giving the body what it needs to thrive - nutrients, proteins, fats, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. The right foods are the answer but it’s getting harder and harder to get everything your body needs from foods. The secret this week is … Don’t Tolerate MINERAL Deficiencies
Jeff Thurston believes that our microbial world must be understood. Our internal microbiome and the earth we walk on. A 1964 graduate of Bemidji University, Jeff began his career as a Jr Virologist at National Drug Company working with pathogenic organisms. He was then promoted to flu vaccine manufacturing. The light went off and Jeff exited that side of the business. A sales career led him into organic agriculture and back to the bacteria in the ground. It was in this field he met his partner Randy Porubcan and the beginnings of Master Supplements, Inc. in 2002. To that end, Master Supplements and U.S. Enzymes manufacture the highest-quality supplements for intestinal health. Jeff specializes in the patented delivery and stimulation of the best, compatible probiotics along with digestive/systemic enzymes and prebiotics to create an environment conducive to their survival. The insight that most influenced how we felt navigating our journey with our kids. The secret this week is … Your BELIEFS Influence EVERYTHING
Suzanne Pruss is a Senior Mentor & Trainer at the Option Institute® International Learning & Training Center. She has been practicing the Option Process since 1995. She first arrived at The Autism Treatment Center of America in 1992 and fell in love with the teachings and techniques of the Son-Rise Program: a home-based program for parents with children on the autism spectrum. She was enamored with how respectful, loving, fun, and creative she could be connecting with a person on the spectrum of any age. She had intended to stay and volunteer for two months but, instead, found her calling and has been affiliated with the Option Institute ever since. Her biggest joy is having worked one-on-one with over 1,200 children on the autistic spectrum and their families world-wide. She feels blessed to be able to assist parents and their team members to learn this beautiful way to connect, inspire and support children on the spectrum to grow to their fullest potential. She most especially loves teaching parents how to be comfortable, have fun, and be awesomely capable as they support their child’s growth. Suzanne grew up in Australia and attended a one-room primary school, ‘Little House on the Prairie’-style. She loves nature, animals, painting, anyone with autism, and comedy. She has traveled the world extensively, was born in Vietnam, and has ‘family’ world-wide.

07 Jan 2021 | Warriors Are ALL-IN | 00:30:25
Why Warrior? In this episode we go deep on the term "Warrior" and how it has nothing to do with War. A Warrior is all about a parent’s love for their child and their willingness to go ALL-IN.
You've heard us say it repeatedly, so we thought it was time to take a deep dive into what it truly means to be a warrior parent. At its core, a warrior parent accepts and loves their child as they are. And their focus is to do everything in their power to set their child up for success.
Their primary goal is to create an environment that provides the best opportunity for healing and progress and true connection. This work isn't easy and frequently requires a lot of un-learning on the parents' part. It usually means choosing the path less traveled. It often requires breaking through the limitations that others put on their child.
In this episode, we're going over the characteristics of the warrior parent, why it's essential to find a great support network, and practices you can start TODAY to ensure you are showing up for your child in the best way possible.

This week's episode is part 2 of our discussion with our client, Helen Shanley. We discuss how support is the missing link parents need on their healing journeys. Parents often just try to manage on their own in isolation. It's hard to ask for support. But for those willing to be supported, so much more is possible! Helen's story is a testament to just that. She and her son have an incredible story of healing and hope, and so much of it can be credited to her focus on support. Helen shares why she now relies on her own wisdom for her son's care and the growth that she's experienced by working through her limiting beliefs. Tune into this week's episode to learn more about her reflections and how you, too, can adopt a supportive practice for your family! Key Takeaways

Welcome back to another episode of Autism Parenting Secrets. Today's episode is about one simple truth. The greatest gift you can give your child is stronger, more capable, and more resilient you. The secret is that you must transform first. We didn’t know this secret early on in our own journey. After our son’s diagnosis, we were immediately fixated on how we were going to “fix” him. At the time, we were not looking internally at all. Our life was a flurry of doctor’s visits and meetings with specialists. We assumed that our proactiveness would jumpstart us on a path to healing but the truth was...it didn’t. Instead, we realized that we were really just limiting his opportunity to be a happy, healthy, and connected child. We were operating with blind spots and unrealistic expectations that were hurting our child more than helping him. Our goal in this episode is to shed light on some preconceived notions you might be holding onto. Perhaps, there are some ideas you’re carrying around that aren’t serving your family. Because the sooner you focus on your own transformation the better. You give yourself the gift of a stronger and more capable version of yourself. In turn, your child wins big, because they'll have a more confident, relaxed, connected, and more present parent navigating this journey alongside them! Key Takeaways

13 Jul 2023 | CHIROPRACTIC CALMS The Nervous System | 00:48:10
Welcome to Episode 160 of Autism Parenting Secrets. This week we explore why chiropractic care can make a huge difference for your child. Our guest is Dr. Nancy Tarlow, a neurologically-based Chiropractor who has been practicing since 1993. The benefits of chiropractic care to address physical pain and discomfort are well known. But the impact on the brain is not widely understood or appreciated. This discussion dives into the neurological and emotional benefits that occur from the right adjustments and corrections. And for your child on the spectrum, there’s one big reason why chiropractic care from the right professional can be game-changing. The secret this week is … CHIROPRACTIC CALMS The Nervous System
Dr. Nancy Tarlow is a neurologically-based Chiropractor and has been in practice since 1993. She decided to become a Chiropractor after a life-changing experience of chronic health problems (environmental allergies, chronic sinus & bronchial infections, regular illness) to become allergy-free and healthy in just a few short months! Her focus has been primarily on family care with a special interest in working with children taking primarily post-graduation classes in pregnancy and children's care since '97. In 2000, she did the Chiropractic Nutrition post-graduate program, whose focus was on inflammation and how it affects health with learning how inflammatory foods break down in the body vs non-inflammatory foods. Incorporating this work has been essential to the health of her patients in healing the gut and the brain, along with the work of the Weston A Price Foundation. In 2008, she made a startling discovery that when she used a Chiropractic technique that stimulated The Relaxation Response, an adult woman's chronic severe constipation of only moving her bowels every 10 days improved to daily. That prompted a focus on using these types of techniques with all of her patients that were in a chronic "fight or flight" state that was impeding their healing. She started teaching her patients about how to stimulate the Relaxation Response on their own and the importance of how stress affects every aspect of health. Nancy will be offering webinars on this type of information online for anyone that is interested in decreasing inflammation and stress in their body for the healing of the gut and brain. 06 Aug 2020 | Your Self Care Is NOT Optional | 00:24:45
Becoming the parent you truly want to be begins with taking care of YOU. In this episode, we discuss the importance of parents caring for themselves. Many parents of a child with autism focus on only their child and ignore their own self-care. Often, they’ve been carrying around detrimental mindsets and beliefs that work against the progress they are trying to make. Don’t let that be you. Self-care is not selfish. Actually, the opposite is true. The better you care for your own wellbeing the better you’ll be able to show up for your child. Early on in our journey, we believed self-care was optional. We developed a sort of Hero complex and thought any time not focused on our son was a waste. This led to burnout and stress for not only us but our son Ry as well. When we realized that our efforts were doing more harm than help we knew we needed to make a change. And we got creative with it! Sometimes self-care looks like a thirty-minute phone conversation with a friend or even sneaking in a quick shower before bed. The point is, it is so important that you carve out intentional time for yourself. This allows you the time to recharge and refresh so you can handle whatever comes your way. We firmly believe in being calm WARRIORS opposed to worriers and taking time for ourselves helps us do just that. Tune into this week’s episodes for some tips and encouragement so that you too can show up as the best version of you for yourself and your family. Key Takeaways

23 Jul 2020 | Your Child's NOT Broken | 00:28:34
Today's episode is about revealing that even if your child has a diagnosis that doesn't define them, judging them just doesn't help. The secret is your child not broken. We go deep on the concept that judging your child as 'broken' doesn't help you support them. Parents can accept their children as they are and move with determination to support them as best they can. We've broken down the path of helping your child into five actionable steps. They are comprised of beliefs and messaging that you must adopt if you are committed to becoming a Warrior Parent. The truth is you cannot help someone until you accept them as they are. Thinking about step number one, understand that judging your child is broken weakens your ability to help. Step number two is to know that your child can sense your level of acceptance. And we're very fortunate that our son remembers everything, even from the time that he had no words. You absolutely have to be playing on the same team as your child. Three, Other people's judgment of your child doesn't define your child. Everyone has an opinion. That does not mean you should listen to them all. Don't allow outside influences to overstep their boundaries. You know them best. Four, trust that every child does have opportunities to grow. Growth might not look the way you imagined, and that's okay! Embrace the steps forward your child is making. All progress is good progress. And finally, the last step is really, and truly your child needs support that's right for them. There is no one size fits all. Once you realize that, you'll increase your connection by dropping that judgment. Please tune in to this week's episode as we dive into these important and necessary steps. You got this! This week, we have a special episode for you all! We talked with our client, Helen Shanley from Ireland. She just completed our 12-week intensive program. She shares her transformation, and how taking small steps while putting less pressure on herself was huge. It paved the way for her to transform, which gave her son the space to make huge gains! The feedback we get from our clients is gratifying and always offers us a fresh and interesting perspective to the journey we're all on as parents. Our discussion with Helen starts with some of the feelings she had to navigate when her son was first given an Autism diagnosis. Feelings that you may be familiar with--the grief, loneliness, and uncertainty that is so often attached to raising a child with specific challenges. She details those initial emotions and her decision not to allow a diagnosis to define her family's quality of life. She went from putting immense pressure on herself to be the perfect parent taking all the right steps and making sure her child was doing all of the "right things to letting go and taking one step at a time. We talk about the unintentional pressure we put on ourselves and children and some self-care tips we can implement to help keep us grounded and refreshed. Tune into this week's episode to listen to Helen's encouraging story! Key Takeaways

Through a friend, they found neurodevelopmental therapy, and within nine months of beginning a functional movement program, he became both seizure and medication-free, as he still is today. Sargent has been working with children with various disabilities/challenges for 30 years as a practitioner of NeuroDevelopmental Movement ®. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles and was recognized for his accomplishment with an internationally adopted child in a news story for WBZ-TV in Boston that was subsequently picked up by the CBS affiliates in New York City and Philadelphia. Her son was diagnosed with moderate to severe autism at age 3 and is now 12 and thriving. Dr. Novlet Jarrett Davis is a physician trained and board-certified in internal medicine. She started a weight loss clinic and helped many patients accomplish their goals. She practiced outpatient primary care medicine for two years after medical school and loved it. She became interested in preventive medicine, which involves helping patients with chronic diseases improve their quality of life through diet and lifestyle changes. She exercised at a local park two nights a week with her patients and educated them with regular classes on nutrition, diet, and healthy lifestyle changes. She then transitioned to hospital medicine, where she took care of very sick patients for 15 years. She has worked in hospitals in North Carolina and Kentucky. Part of her role as a Hospitalist involves teaching and training interns, residents, and medical students. In 2015. her son was diagnosed with severe autism, and it was during that time that she started to explore functional medicine to a greater extent. 17 Sep 2020 | Curiosity Is An Underrated Superpower | 00:23:48
In this episode, we discuss the importance of parents remaining curious about why their child is doing what they are doing. And how it’s important to find doctors and therapists who are curious about your child as well. Raising a child with Autism is a journey of figuring out the unknowns. Parents fail to realize that finding the answers that are right for your child starts with you and the people surrounding your child being open to learning and adapting to their unique needs. Instead of becoming consumed with questions such as, "why isn't my child hitting certain milestones?" or succumbing to the pressure and stress triggered by your child's confusing behaviors, focus on figuring out the 'why'. You won't make progress if your entire perspective centers around what your child can't do. You must put on your detective hat and open your mind to the curiosities and complexities that make your child unique. That mindset opens up a window for learning and understanding your child better, putting you into a much better position to figure out what might be helpful. In addition to that, it puts you in your child's shoes. The behaviors you once thought were so strange may suddenly start to make sense, and you provide the opportunity for an even more profound connection with your child. We can't stress enough how significant this mindset shift is! Listen to this week's episode to learn how it completely changed our lives for the better. Key Takeaways
