22 Jul 2024 | Ep. 19 Mental Hunts; RMK Leatherworks | 01:42:22
Mental health and firearm ownership is a complex topic to navigate and on this episode I chat with Glen who went through a mental health issue and lost his access to firearms. As a result, Glen made it a personal mission to change how the government treated people in this situation. I'm thankful for people like Glen and his team from Mental Hunts for bringing the focus on this topic in such a measured approach. While they are based in NZ it's still inspiring to hear what they are achieving in changing the mindset of those put in charge to police our weapon ownership. It gives hope that change can be effected in Australia so firearm owners are not faced with similar issues. @mentalhunts or find them on YouTube. On the 'Friend of the Podcast' segment I travel up the road to the Sunshine Coast and meet up with Matt from RMK Leatherworks. Matt has a hunting background and he and his team make some damn fine leather products - some for shooting/hunting and many other needs outside of this. @rmkleatherworks https://rmkleatherworks.com I would also ask you to support the 2024 podcast partners; Skeleton Optics - @skeletonoptics_au On Track Meals - @on_track_meals Anyone with ideas for future episodes, or just a chat around backcountry/backpack hunting - please feel free to reach out. @australian_hunting_backcountry australian.hunting.backcountry@outlook.com.au Thanks for listening - look after yourselves and your mates.
02 Mar 2025 | Ep. 26 Reloading for "long range" hunting & Natures Perks | 02:45:36
In this episode I connect with Fergus Bailey @rifletuner a competitive long range shooter and hunter, and we talk around what he feels is actually needed for reloading and load testing at a competitive level in 'long range' distances and the transition of that to hunting. I did have some minor technical issues to overcome in this episode so bear with me on the audio... I will invite Fergus back for another one or two recordings (if he'll have me) so feel free to shoot questions through after listening to this one. I also chat with Lawson from @natures_perks_aus around what these guys are now doing and they evolved from their previous endeavours into Natures Perks. Their subscription giveaways are definitely worth looking at for some great hunting/fishing opportunities. Don't forget that in 2025 I am proud to partner with; Natures Perks -naturesperks.com.au @natures_perks_aus Gun Traders Australia -guntraders.com.au @guntradersaustralia Please also continue to support the 2024 partners; Skeleton Optics Australia On Track Meals Feel free to reach out for a chat or with any podcast ideas; @australian_hunting_backcountry australian.hunting.backcountry@outlook.com.au Look after yourself and your mates - Tobias.
29 Sep 2024 | Ep. 21 NZ 2024 - Hunt 1 recordings along the hunt | 02:29:57
In May 2024 I was able to spend nearly 3 weeks in New Zealand chasing Tahr and Chamois on my own. This is from my first hunt which was up the Copland River on the west coast. The recordings are done in the field and after the hunt so the audio is reflective of my surroundings. Spoiler alert - I didn't get any animals on the ground but I did see a couple of beautiful Tahr bulls. I wanted to be able to pass on my learnings along the way to help you get over to NZ for a backcountry hunt as this was an absolutely amazing experience. Feel free to ask me any questions you want. 30 Sep 2023 | Ep. 6 - TRICER lightweight backcountry products with Drew | 02:06:04
In this episode I connect with Drew from TRICER @tricerusa all the way over in California, USA. Tricer's statement is; "To help hunters go deeper into the backcountry, we manufacture products that are fast, light, and simple." Drew is the owner of Tricer (and an awesome moustache) and designs a number of lightweight products for the backcountry hunter including their most recent additions, a super-light fluid tripod head and carbon fiber tripods. I have personally been using the TRICER-LP for several months and Drew assures me that there are some more mind-blowing products on the way. Tricer is firmly identifying themselves as a hunting company and cementing themselves as leaders in this field - https://tricerusa.com/ Drew is a family man, small business owner and a gear nerd (like me) so we talk a bit about some of the gear we use and integrating our children into hunting. Drew also has his own podcast 'The Tricer Podcast' so head over there for some great content too. But most importantly!!! Tricer is now supported in Australia by 'The Modern Hunter Australia' so we can support an Australian business at the same time as getting hold of these quality products - https://themodernhunter.com.au/ On my 'Friend of the Podcast' segment I am talking to Geoff from 'Down Under Outdoors'. Geoff and his wife Cath, who have been hunting Sambar deer for decades, identified the need for some simple yet effective products for hunters including silicone scope lens covers and face veils. 24 Aug 2023 | Ep.4 - ON TRACK MEALS - Read to eat adventure meals | 01:26:02
On this episode I get to connect with Eric from On Track Meals who highlights a business success story to come out of being an end-user need and business survival through the dirty C word from the last few years. Eric and his team at On Track Expeditions identified how to make some packable, nutritious and delicious meals that they were happy to take on the Kokoda Track and can be kept safely for many years. The members of On Track Meals are veterans and have eaten more than their fair share of MREs and dehydrated/freeze dried meals. They needed more than just sustinence and created some comfort style meals that require very little prep and were incredibly versatile for a number of outdoor situations. Most importantly, the products are Australian made by an Australian owned company. 31 Oct 2024 | Ep. 22 Weekend Mish & Alpine Beards | 01:45:02
In May 2024 I was able to spend an incredible 3 weeks hunting in New Zealand and in between hunts, I was very fortunate to be able to meet up with the two young lads from @theweekendmish. Raz and Gabe are absolutely knocking it out of the park with their hunting and success in this world. We had a really fun chat and I would loved to have stayed longer but their schedule was tight so I slipped in for as long as I could and then moved on to my next hunting location. I'm really looking forward to seeing what these young men are up to next. They have some amazing videos on YouTube so be sure to check them all out (if you haven't already). My 'friend of the podcast' in this episode is Shaun from Alpine Beards (@alpine_beards_australia). This small business based in Albury, NSW, and is making some really interesting mens products - aimed at those of us with facial hair in need of some TLC. I am all for treating my beard and smelling nice so as a special treat, podcast listeners can get 20% off using the code "AHB20" for a limited time. 13 Dec 2023 | Ep. 10 - Chris Boon; OG backpack hunter | 01:46:33
Chris Boon has been backpack hunting for many years and details his learnings, experiences and some personal challenges that he overcame to get back into the Vic high country in 2023. For those of you old enough to remember having to read hunting magazines to get your content fix, Chris wrote a number of articles and is probably best remembered for hunts with his infant son in his backpack. Chris has successfully hunted all 6 species of deer in Australia but, like alot of us, is addicted to Sambar. I felt honoured to be able to chat with Chris and actually meet someone I held in such high regard from reading his articles all those years ago. Make sure to check out highlights from his trip @chrisboon2014. I'm also joined in my Friend of the Podcast segment by Josh from Alpine Accuracy to discuss his lightweight shooting bags. A great idea for anyone looking for some lightweight shooting accessories - or sneaky Xmas present @alpine_accuracy Please continue to support my past 'Friends of the Podcast' and brand guests as they continue to support us;
