05 Dec 2023 | S6E3 - The Night Field by Donna Glee Williams | 00:38:27
Episode NotesWe review the ecological fable/fantasy epic The Night Field by Donna Glee Williams as narrated by Debra Michaels. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. About the book: Welcome to The Real, where Pyn-Poi's people live in harmony with nature - until a killing stink threatens their whole world. Pyn-Poi's mother Marak wants her to grow up to be the matriarch of the tribe, learning how to cook, to make medicines, how to care for everyone, but Pyn-Poi would rather be out among the trees like her father Sook-Sook, learning how persuade tree roots into bridges, to feel when shoots are too crowded, when drooping leaves need attention. Then something starts going wrong in The Real: when the rains come, instead of nourishment, they bring a noxious stench that's poisoning people and plants alike. Pyn-Poi is the treewoman now: it's her job. Their only chance is for her to climb to the land beyond the Wall, where the Ancestors live, to plead for their intercession Pyn-Poi never expected to find a whole new world up there, with people who are very different from her own family and friends - a land where they are killing nature, and that's killing The Real. The trees have a job for Pyn-Poi, and to succeed, she is going to have to be brave and strong and true - no matter what. The episode is brought to you by Alexandra Park BJJ. 19 Oct 2021 | S2E7 - Small by Claire Lynch | 00:37:41
Episode NotesWe discuss Claire Lynch's memoir Small. No spoilers but this one hit us both in the feels for very different reasons. Thank you to Claire for providing the review copy. Here is the blurb: "Babies who are this small, he says, have a good chance of survival. Small is not good for babies. It is not whimsical or cute or the cause of admiration. It is the first time it occurs to us that they might not survive. Babies die from smallness." Claire Lynch knew that having children with her wife would be complicated but she could never have anticipated the extent to which her life would be redrawn by the process. This dazzling debut begins with the smallest of life's substances, the microscopic cells subdividing in a petri dish in a fertility treatment centre. She moves through her story in incremental yet ever-growing steps, from the fingernail-sized pregnancy test result screen which bears two affirmative lines to the premature arrival of her children who have to wear scale-model oxygen masks in their life-saving incubators. Devastatingly poignant and profoundly observant - and funny against the odds - Claire considers whether it is our smallness that makes our lives so big. 31 Jan 2023 | S4E5 - The Timewaster Letters Compendium by Robin Cooper (Robert Popper) | 00:27:47
Episode NotesWe discuss The Timewaster Letters Compendium by Robin Cooper (aka Robert Popper) as read by Robert Popper, Dawn French, Peter Serafinowicz, and Jonathan Keeble. The massive best-selling Timewaster Letters books featured the wonderfully silly letters of Robin Cooper (a.k.a. Friday Night Dinner creator Robert Popper) in which he shared his madcap ideas - and even madcapper inventions - with everyone from the British Halibut Association to the Peanut Council. The resulting replies, as well as Cooper’s replies-to-these-replies, had a nation in hysterics. Letter-writing was never the same again.... And now, exactly 15 years, 5 months and 26 days after the first Timewaster Letters book hit our shelves, you can listen to these hilarious letters, as they’re brought to life in this Audible exclusive by comedy giants Dawn French, Peter Serafinowicz and Robert Popper. The Timewaster Letters Compendium brings together The Timewaster Letters and Return of the Timewaster Letters along with exclusive audio content. There’s a new Introduction by Popper, a chat with Serafinowicz reflecting on the 20 years since Popper sent off his first fateful letter. Plus, a world exclusive - The Cement Murder Mystery, the first thriller story penned by Robin Cooper himself and read by Jonathan Keeble. We don’t want to make promises, but it might also be the worst-written story of all time. You’ll also get to hear a selection of Popper’s world-famous prank phone calls, in which he poses as the hapless and hopeless Robin Cooper. Robert Popper is a writer, producer and performer, best known for creating the Channel 4 smash hit comedy_ Friday Night Dinner_, as well as the award-winning spoof BBC2 science show Look Around You. He has also worked on many of Britain’s top comedy shows including Peep Show, The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd and Stath Lets Flats, as well as writing on South Park. 01 Jan 2022 | New Year's Special: Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
Episode NotesHappy New Year! We hope you all have a kickass 2022. In a special episode, we discuss one of Poppy's favourite Discworld books Hogfather. The Discworld books are receiving new audiobook versions and we believe that this is the first one to be released. It is read by Sian Clifford, Bill Nighy (doing the footnotes), and, Peter Serafinowicz (as DEATH). We had a great time chatting about it. The Blurb: 'Twas the night before Hogswatch and all through the house...something was missing. The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say Ho Ho Ho - but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again... The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Hogfather is the fourth book in the Death series; a festive feast of darkness (but with jolly robots and tinsel too). 07 Nov 2023 | S6E1 - The Doctor's Wife by Daniel Hurst | 00:31:58
Episode NotesWe review The Doctor's Wife by Daniel Hurst, the first in a trilogy of thrillers about a village doctor and his wife. Thanks to Jess from Bookouture for the ARC. About the book: He thinks his secret is safe. But she knows the truth.... My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it’s far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should’ve been a fresh start for us both. Except I’ve discovered my husband has been lying to me again. He’s using the power he has in his job to mess with people’s lives and to get exactly what he wants–no matter who it hurts. But he’s underestimated me. I’ve had plenty of time, in this big, isolated house, to think about all of his mistakes. And my husband has no idea what’s about to happen next.... 14 Feb 2023 | S4E6 - Nubia: The Awakening by Omar Epps and Clarence A. Haynes | 00:45:53
Episode NotesWe discuss Nubia: The Awakening By Omar Epps and Clarence A. Haynes as read by Amir Abdullah, Emana Rachelle, and Jeorge Bennett Watson. A powerful saga of three teens, the children of refugees from a fallen African utopia, who must navigate their newfound powers in a climate-ravaged New York City. For Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho, Nubia is a mystery. Before they were born, a massive storm destroyed their ancestral homeland, forcing their families to flee across the ocean to New York City. Nubia, a utopic island nation off the coast of West Africa, was no more, and their parents’ sorrow was too deep for them to share much of their history beyond the folklore. But New York, ravaged by climate change and class division, is far from a safe haven for refugees, and Nubians live as outcasts, struggling to survive in the constantly flooding lower half of Manhattan, while the rich thrive in the tech-driven sky city known as the Up High. To many, being Nubian means you’re fated for a life plagued by difficulties and disrespect. But Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho are beginning to feel there might be more. Something within them is changing, giving each of them extraordinary powers. Extraordinary and terrifying powers that seem to be tied to the secrets their parents have kept from them. And there are people Up High watching, eager to do anything they can to become even more powerful than they already are. Now Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho will be faced with the choice—do they use their inheritance to lift their people, or to leave them behind? The fate of their city, and their people, hangs in the balance. This is the story of the sadly neglected Book That No One Wanted To Read–can its destiny change when it finally meets the right reader? Spoiler alert: yes. 09 Oct 2023 | S5E5 - From the archives: | 00:35:17
Episode NotesNo new episode this week. Instead, we're re-releasing an old episode. We review the lyrically written coming-of-age story Somebody Loves You by Mona Arshi. It's about Ruby's struggles to fit in against the backdrop of racism, and, her mother's bouts with mental illness. Thank you all for listening. We will be back in the new year. If you want to get in touch, email audiobookishpod@gmail.com or DM us on social media. Send us your recommendations or requests! Buy the book here and we'll be kicked some money. About the author: Mona Arshi was born in West London, where she still lives. She worked as a human rights lawyer with Liberty for a decade before receiving a master’s in creative writing from the University of East Anglia. Her debut poetry collection Small Hands was published in 2015, winning the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Mona Arshi regularly appears on BBC Radio 4. Her poems have been published in The Sunday Times, The Guardian and the Times of India and most recently the London Underground. About the book : A teacher asked me a question, and I opened my mouth as a sort of formality but closed it softly, knowing with perfect certainty that nothing would ever come out again. Ruby gives up talking at a young age. Her mother isn’t always there to notice; she comes and goes and goes and comes, until, one day, she doesn’t. Silence becomes Ruby’s refuge, sheltering her from the weather of her mother’s mental illness and a pressurized suburban atmosphere. Plangent, deft, and sparkling with wry humour, Somebody Loves You is a moving exploration of how we choose or refuse to tell the stories that shape us. 25 May 2022 | S3E10 - BONUS! #BritishBookAwards Winners Special | 00:32:45
Episode NotesA Special Bonus episode. We repost our review of the winner of Book of the Year - Audiobook: Fiction. Congratulations to the Wizards of Once: Never and Forever by Cressida Cowell as narrated by David Tennant from HODDER CHILDREN'S BOOKS. This episode also contains Cressida's acceptance speech. #Nibbies #BritishBookAwards Please get in touch via email at audiobookishpod@gmail.com or follow us on social media @audiobookishpod. From the British Book Awards website: Never and Forever is the fourth and final book in Cressida Cowell’s The Wizards of Once series. Our judges celebrated the return of David Tennant as the voice of the series; his “impish, agile” narration was “masterfully executed”. One judge declared that Tennant is a “reader at the heights of his powers”; it was a “natural match of writer, text and narrator”, added another. Never and Forever reveals the story’s hitherto-unknown narrator, which could have been a problem for the audiobook but the publisher found a clever solution. The attention given to the production “conjured a visual world” and an audio experience that was “pure heart from beginning to end”. Never and Forever was Hachette’s most pre-ordered audiobook ever, 47% up on previous titles in the series. It is “the benchmark” for kids’ audiobooks, the judges agreed Support Audiobookish by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/audiobookish Find out more at https://audiobookish.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast. The audiobook is narrated by Ben Onwukue and Vivienne Acheampong. Our discussion covers the use of music in audiobooks, our love of horrible villains, and how some books are written to be read aloud. A fisherman sings to himself in his pirogue, waiting for a catch but attracts a sea-dweller he doesn't expect. Episode NotesOnce a Monster by Robert Dinsdale as narrated by Justin Avoth About the book: London, 1861: Ten-year-old Nell belongs to a crew of mudlarks who work a stretch of the Thames along the Ratcliffe Highway. An orphan since her mother died four years past, leaving Nell with only broken dreams and a pair of satin slippers in her possession, she spends her days dredging up coals, copper and pieces of iron spilled by the river barges – searching for treasure in the mud in order to appease her master, Benjamin Murdstone. But one day, Nell discovers a body on the shore. It’s not the first corpse she’s encountered, but by far the strangest. Nearly seven feet tall, the creature has matted hair covering his legs, and on his head are the suggestion of horns. Nell’s fellow mudlarks urge her to steal his boots and rifle his pockets, but as she ventures closer the figure draws breath – and Nell is forced to make a decision which will change her life forever . . . 29 Mar 2022 | S3E5 - Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher | 00:31:22
Episode NotesWe discuss Carrie Fisher's autobiographical audiobook Wishful Drinking. In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher told the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabres." Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction and weathering the wild ride of manic depression. It's an incredible tale: from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, and from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed. 07 Sep 2021 | S2E4 - The Carpet People | 00:39:24
Episode NotesWe chat about The Carpet People. We had some harsh words for it. About the book: In the beginning, there was nothing but endless flatness. Then came the Carpet… That’s the old story everyone knows and loves. But now the Carpet is home to many different tribes and peoples and there’s a new story in the making. The story of Fray, sweeping a trail of destruction across the Carpet. The story of power-hungry mouls – and of two Munrung brothers, who set out on an amazing adventure. It’s a story that will come to a terrible end – if someone doesn’t do something about it. If everyone doesn’t do something about it… Co-written by Terry Pratchett, aged seventeen, and master storyteller, Terry Pratchett, aged forty-three. Sir Terry Pratchett was the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series, the first of which, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983. 03 May 2021 | S1E6 - No Fixed Abode: Life and Death Among the UK's Forgotten Homeless by Maeve McClenaghan | 00:33:46
Episode NotesThis week's episode is a discussion of No Fixed Abode by Maeve McClenaghan. No Fixed Abode starts with a simple question: How many homeless people are dying in the UK every year? What follows is a thorough investigation of homelessness policies, the people on the frontline trying to help those seeking support, and the stories of the homeless themselves. Our discussion covers Maeve's compassionate approach to journalism, the rage-inducing details of a system close to collapse, and how the book has an ultimately hopeful conclusion. It doesn't have to be this way. As we come out of lockdown this is a timely reminder not to forget the most vulnerable in our society. About the author: Maeve McClenaghan is an award-winning investigative journalist at The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and founder of the popular, critically-acclaimed podcast, The Tip Off. She has led investigations for BBC radio, the Guardian and Buzzfeed UK. Maeve has won the Bar Council's Legal Reporting Award, the innovation awards at the British Journalism Awards and the European Press Prize. She has also been a finalist for four Amnesty Media Awards, the Paul Foot Award and the Orwell Prize in 2016 and 2018. 20 Dec 2022 | S4E2 - And Away... Author by Bob Mortimer | 00:33:33
Episode NotesWe discuss Bob Mortimer's autobiography And Away... as read by Bob Mortimer. Bob Mortimer’s life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him, but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away… Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad, and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt. As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London. Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him ‘The Cockroach King’ after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track. And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2’s Gone Fishing. Warm, profound, and irrepressibly funny, And Away… is Bob’s full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure.) Thanks for listening. 02 Jan 2024 | S6E5 - The Housemaid by Freida McFadden | 00:27:00
Episode NotesHappy New Year! We review The Housemaid by Freida McFadden as narrated by Lauryn Allman. Thanks to Jess from Bookouture for the ARC. About the book: “Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own.... Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband, Andrew, seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of.... - The episode is brought to you by Alexandra Park BJJ. 21 Sep 2021 | S2E5 - A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins | 00:57:24
Episode NotesWe discuss the latest thriller from smash-hit author Paula Hawkins. Thanks to Penguin for the ARC. Here is the blurb. When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim's home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbour clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are - for different reasons - simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them. When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds. How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smoulder before they explode into flame? Please rate and review the podcast wherever you find it. 17 Jan 2023 | S4E4 - The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak | 00:40:53
Episode NotesWe discuss The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak as read by Daphne Kouma and Amira Ghazalla. Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. The fig tree witnesses their hushed, happy meetings; their silent, surreptitious departures. The fig tree is there, too, when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, when the teenagers vanish. Decades later, Kostas returns - a botanist, looking for native species - looking, really, for Defne. The two lovers return to the taverna to take a clipping from the fig tree and smuggle it into their suitcase, bound for London. Years later, the fig tree in the garden is their daughter Ada's only knowledge of a home she has never visited, as she seeks to untangle years of secrets and silence, and find her place in the world. Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize 2022, A Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, A top 10 Sunday Times best seller. Shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award 2021.
