17 Nov 2024What are my autism and ADHD symptoms and traits00:16:09

Autism symptoms often go unnoticed, especially in adults. Join Brett, the AuDHD Boss, as they unpack their late-diagnosis journey and key autism traits that shaped their life and career. A note about language: I’m using the term symptoms in the title of this video for the purposes of search, but what I am describing from my personal experience are my autistic and ADHD (AudHD) traits. As you read the resources you’ll find the use of the word traits rather than symptoms because "symptom" often has a negative connotation. Traits, however, speaks to a more lived experience. This video also only represents a small portion of my traits and just a sample of how it shows up in my life. On this channel, I share insights about navigating ADHD and autism in the workplace, using a strengths-based approach to help neurodivergent professionals thrive. In this video, I dive into my personal experience with autism symptoms as a late-diagnosed adult. Using reflections from my diagnosis journal, I explore key traits like masking, struggles with change, sensory sensitivities, social rules, executive dysfunction, and more. I also share how discovering the unique overlap of ADHD and autism symptoms led to my "aha" moments. With over ten years of leadership experience and training in the corporate workplace, these videos are my views only and don't reflect or represent any of my current or past employers. I am not a medical professional, this video is for educational purposes only. 01 Feb 2025Managing Overwhelm While Staying Informed | ADHD, Autism and Mental Health00:07:11

Feeling overwhelmed by the nonstop flood of news and information? As an autistic and ADHD professional, I know firsthand how easy it is to spiral into anxiety, especially in chaotic times. In this episode, I’m sharing strategies from my recent therapy session and my background as a former journalist on how to stay informed without feeding overwhelm.

As someone with ADHD, autism, and OCD, I’ve been feeling the weight of everything happening in the world. Earlier today, I had a therapy session, and I want to verbally process some of what I learned with you before I get back to my usual content on ADHD and autism in the workplace.

I’m also a former journalist, so I know firsthand that no one is supposed to take in the news the way journalists do—raw, unfiltered, and relentless. And that’s on a normal news day. Right now, the sheer volume and intensity of information are designed to make us feel overwhelmed, anxious, and emotionally drained.

So how do we stay informed without burning out? Here are some strategies I’ve learned, both from my experience in journalism and from today’s therapy session.

We'll talk about:
✔️ How to limit news consumption in a healthy way
✔️ Managing OCD and anxiety during uncertain times
✔️ Prioritizing rest and reducing sensory overload
✔️ Finding joy and small ways to take action
✔️ How allies can support marginalized communities

If you struggle with information overload, ADHD, autism, or OCD, this episode will give you practical tools to help you navigate the world while protecting your mental health.

15 Dec 2024How to communicate better at work: ADHD and Autism Edition00:08:10

How to Balance Context and Conciseness at Work: Tips for Autistic and ADHD Professionals

As neurodivergent professionals—whether autistic, ADHD, or both—we often love diving deep into problems, unraveling their complexities, and solving puzzles at work. But what happens when our need for context clashes with a workplace culture that values conciseness?

Too often, the details we share can come across to managers or neurotypical coworkers as excuses or complaints instead of what they really are: a well-thought-out analysis. This can create misunderstandings and frustrations, especially when communicating with senior leaders or “holistic” thinkers who focus on big-picture solutions.

So, how do you balance your need for detail with the workplace's demand for clear and concise communication? I’m Brett, the AuDHD Boss, and in this post, I’ll share practical, strengths-based strategies to help you communicate effectively in professional settings.

16 Mar 2025Autistic Masking and Burnout: Understanding the Impact | AudHD Boss00:19:03

This episode of the AudHD Boss podcast explores autistic masking and its significant impact on autistic burnout. Host Brett, who has ADHD and autism and is a corporate leader, shares personal experiences and draws on expertise from Dr. Megan Anna Neff, author of "The Autistic Burnout Workbook".

Key topics covered include:

  • Defining Autistic Masking: An explanation of what autistic masking is, including the conscious and unconscious suppression of autistic traits, mannerisms, and behaviors. Brett, referencing Dr Neff's book, discusses how masking often begins as a protective mechanism and shares his own experiences with "studying to be human" and mimicking others.
  • The Link Between Masking and Burnout: How masking leads to a buildup of stress and exhaustion, ultimately contributing to autistic burnout. The episode explores how suppressing one's true self and needs takes a significant toll.
  • Unmasking and Finding Your True Self: Brett discusses the journey of unmasking, drawing on author Dr. Gibson's concept (from Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents) of the "true self" versus the "role self". He shares his personal experience with coming out later in life as a catalyst for unmasking. The episode also covers practical techniques from The Autistic Burnout Workbook for unmasking and self-discovery, including developing interoceptive awareness and identifying sources of joy.
  • Navigating Masking in Everyday Life: Practical advice for managing masking in various situations, including the importance of having a plan for when masking is necessary.

This episode provides valuable insights for autistic individuals, those with ADHD, and anyone interested in understanding neurodiversity and the challenges of masking.
