In this eleventh episode of the Atheist Republic Voicemails, know the story behind Nova Pangea, a music project with a secular and humanist approach, ex-Muslims struggling, and a once fundamentalist Christian now an atheist. Our first speaker talks about the joys of expressing his atheism through music. His group called Nova Pangea uses music to connect with people and spread the message of atheism. Our second speaker was deeply involved in a fundamentalist Christian cult for more than 33 years. He talks about how surreal this was, how he was brainwashed and indoctrinated, and why he thinks REALITY is better than any kind of afterlife. The third speaker is an ex-Muslim from Sudan and shares her life now in the Middle East. She describes how she became fed up with the corruption and hypocrisy inherent in Islam and how its followers are brainwashed and manipulated. The fourth speaker is an atheist writer from Jordan in the Middle East, who speaks of the struggles he’s facing in getting his work published in such a religiously oppressive environment. Speaker fifth grew up in a religious family and details his struggles to survive after leaving Islam and being thrown out of his family home. Our final speaker is Armin Navabi, the founder of the Atheist Republic, who has some practical help and advice for the above speaker. Atheists live around the world – but not all are free to express their opinions, and some are even in danger, whether from society or their own family. In this episode, you will hear the stories of nine brave atheists around the world – each in a different situation. From Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Nuro fears for her life. Living in the holiest city of Islam in one of the most repressive theocracies in the world, she risks death if her apostasy is discovered. In Nigeria, the situation for Chguzi Okebo is not so dire, and he praises Atheist Republic for our diligent work – Thanks, Chguzi! Across the Mediterranean in the small South-East European nation of Kosovo, Liro shares his experience in a country split between those of Christian and Muslim faiths. Liro’s older Muslim family members have a strong faith, and he himself held a strong belief – until his father opened up to him and he started exploring information online. Now he struggles to come to terms with his new, atheist beliefs and leaving his old ones behind. Speaker four presents an interesting case: can atheism and religious beliefs ever be reconciled and combined? Asking whether the belief of religion can be combined with the logic of atheism, the speaker seeks compromise for a world that’s moving forward, rather than trapped in the current argumentative, even violent duality. Speaker six lives in a secular country – but one still rife with the political correctness of protecting archaic beliefs. Determined not to base their life on others’ fictions, the speaker fights to find a way forward in a world where religion lurks around every corner. In this episode of the Atheist Republic Voicemails, you’ll hear the stories of six men from around the world: Pakistan, the United Kingdom, France, Nigeria, Egypt, and the United States (via Bahrain). These brave men have all suffered due to their brave choice to reject God – but know that their choice has cost them dearly and may cost them more yet. From Karachi, Pakistan, we hear about the issues that atheists face in this Islamic Republic, home to religious fanatics and shariah law where apostasy – a rejection of God – is punishable by death. Despite the challenges he faces, he remains firm in the conviction of his atheist beliefs. From the United Kingdom, we hear of a young former Muslim suffering emotional abuse at the hands of those who should love him most: his family. Bereft of support, he contemplates suicide as a possible way out. Across the English Channel in France, a bright young Frenchman speaks of his former love of God, and the life-changing event which made him turn to atheism instead. Today, he writes songs and poems which challenge Christians to think – and question – their religious belief. In Nigeria, we hear how the destructive force of religion is tearing a country apart – while the fanatic Islamist forces of Boko Haram devastate the North of the country, the Christian south also has its issues. Being young is hard but being young and atheist is harder. In this twelfth episode of the Atheist Republic Voicemails, atheists share their stories about how atheism influenced their relationship with their family, friends, and the government. From Pakistan, the first speaker is a twenty-five years old atheist and ex-Muslim who talks about the conflict between science and religion, and about being threatened with violence by people and even his close friends because of his atheism. The second speaker talks about what it’s like to be an atheist in the government and how he puts up with discrimination and daily harassment from theists. An atheist from India is the third speaker. He's showing his love and support to the Atheist Republic. A once an evangelical Christian now an atheist, the fourth speaker is from Portland, Oregon area. As an atheist for about eight months, it is a breath of fresh air to live the freethinker's life. He shares what his life was like before leaving his faith and how listening to the debates of great atheists finally convinced him to leave and break away from his group. Fifth speaker is a teenage atheist who talks about how liberating it was to be given a choice by his parents, who allowed him to make up his own mind about religion, and how an atheist friend convinced him to pick this belief system. The last speaker is a seventeen-year-old atheist from Jordan who lost his faith in God after realizing the bullshit that his family brainwashed him when he was young. He talks about the oppression he faces in a Muslim country, and how his atheism has alienated him from the local community. The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “God is dead.” In this episode of Atheist Republic Voicemail, atheists and some theists from all four corners of the world share their own stories. Some are angry, some are fearful – but all believe that God is indeed dead – or deaf to humanity’s plight. The first few speakers speak directly to this omnipresent, invisible, non-existent power that holds sway over millions – revealing that they are not atheist, simply coming to speak out against our lack of faith in God; but we let them speak anyway. 17-year-old Shayna from Morocco is unsure of her Islamic faith, but has virtually no-one to confide in; as a result, she feels lost and alone, seeking to find someone who understands and supports her. Halfway across the world in Pakistan, a bisexual atheist seeks asylum in another country, wishing to be free to be who he is. For now, he keeps his true nature hidden, scared to be a free man – but seeking his freedom all the same. Speaker 8 is 16 and questioning the blind faith of those around him in a God that lets the world’s atrocities and tragedies happen without doing anything. No-one can give him answers, least of all God. He is left with the one question: “Why?” Speaker 9 shares a shocking story from his youth, in which a pastor told him he was responsible for his grandfather’s death for lack of praying. Angry, and amazed at the pastor’s insolence, he said two simple words and turned his back on God and his church. Elsewhere in the United States, an atheist with an Islamic background shares how the community has shunned him for his lack of belief. Despite the isolation, he remains strong, exploring the Koran, and exposing the dangerous, harmful lies that its exponents use to bring misery around the world. Kayden from Utah speaks to support the site – and wants more breakdowns on the Book of Mormon and LDS church, a prominent, conservative force in her region. Across in Arizona, a brother and a sister meet for the first time in 18 years – but their meeting is marred by her family’s Catholicism and what he perceives as her attempts to convert him. Amin from Malaysia expresses concern at the increasing “Arabization” of some of his friend – and fearful to show them that he is an atheist. Stuck in the closet, he wonders when he can finally be who he is, in a country that he sees growing more religious each year. Some of us are free to announce our atheism. Others are forced to keep quiet or risk everything. No matter where you live, there is no denying that religion can damage some of the most important relationships in our lives – and for what?
To kick off, Kimbu challenges the idea that atheists aren’t embattled – and challenges those of faith to question why they believe only praying to God can help, when the reality is he doesn’t exist… so how can he listen?
Bryte hails from Ghana, a country where over 90% are religious, making it one of the most devout in the world. Despite Ghana’s democracy, Bryte explains how he must pretend to be religious, otherwise he will be denounced – and shunned by society, even his own family. Despite having to hide his true nature, he remains confident in his future and that of atheism.
Speaker number four is more circumspect about the circumstances they find themselves in. Living in a Muslim country, apostasy is all but impossible in a culture which believes the Koran is the one final true religion of the world. Not wishing to create familial problems, all that is left is questioning – and sorting through the multiple contradictory answers received. However, the future remains optimistic; although their family may be shamed, the consequences stand to be less dire than for others. For now, questioning and exploring the nature of belief is enough.
Thomas Dixon calls himself a secular humanist, rather than an atheist, wishing to be defined by what he is – not what he isn’t. In this important distinction, he has constructed a new worldview on how humans relate to one another – he asks if others feel the same, or if they have any thoughts.
Speaker 6 covers the sad damage done to his adopted family by the Catholic church. Once a welcome adoption into a childless family, the priest’s insistence of a sexless marriage thereafter invariably led to a father’s blame – on the innocent child – as a mother’s love and devotion grew to compensate. Although both did their best in this church-imposed framework of denial, speaker 6 reflects that there is the legacy of suffering that the three of them endure together, even to this day.
Dao Divine reveals another sordid side to the Catholic church – one that she was unfortunate enough to suffer: child sexual molestation. She urges people to come forward and expose the predators and to break the cycle – one that the church is spending millions of dollars to perpetuate. Her message is simple: “Fight Back.”

Who, or what is God, and why does he hold such terrible power over the human consciousness? Why do followers of God persecute those who don’t believe? In this sixth episode of Atheist Republic Voicemail, ten speakers from around the world share their story. All are different, but all are real. Speaker one raises an interesting question on a statement we made some weeks ago – and asks listeners what they think is the answer to a thought-provoking question on the nature of God, and our problematical statement. From the USA, speaker two is a proud atheist who reveals he was a practicing Mormon for an incredible 50 years. Peter, from Sweden, explains how his country – a famous bastion of freedom where people are free to practice or not without fear of persecution – something that many atheists can’t enjoy, even in the United States. In Morocco, Sam reveals that he is tired of hating religion, and seeks a breakthrough, or a new perspective in combating his negative emotions. As a former Muslim, he battles the strength of other people’s faith daily but now finds himself seeking a peaceful balance. Speaker six grew up in a secular home in a Catholic country, and recalls a funny, yet sad story of a conversation he had with another child aged just nine years old about the rain – and whether or not it was God shaving his beard; he remembers his confusion as the dichotomy between science and faith left him with big questions and few answers. Obaid Omer, an ex-Muslim American, shares his story, and how he is treated for his race and former religion in the current political climate. He goes on to note that he is fortunate, as those who live in Muslim countries cannot speak up – and asks people to remember that ex-Muslims can help us all shed light on where Islam has gone wrong. Jeff, a Canadian council member of Atheist Republic, responds to the Pakistani philosopher seeking moral support. He reminds him to stay strong, find friends, and remember he is not alone. A message from Assad of Atheist Factor asks people to remember to be kind and keep an open heart and mind while teaching children to always question everything that they think they know. Finally, speaker ten is a 29-year-old Muslim. Formerly a fundamentalist, he has since realized the error of his former ways and is now agnostic – and unable to tell anyone. In this episode of the Atheist Republic Voicemails, we share nine stories from around the world. Some encouraging, others despairing, all inspiring. The important message for all of us is this: we are not alone – and we are growing in number. The first caller is a bullied fifth grader seeking other atheists to talk to, who feels stuck in a religious environment that demonizes them for their beliefs. Next is Sagnik from India, who asks a simple, but pointed question: if God exists, why is there so much pain and misery in the world? Speaker three is Judy, a passionate advocate of atheism who shares that progress is being made, with 25% more of the US public being atheist than just five years ago. Judy reminds us to keep up the struggle – we are making an impact. Chris from Pennsylvania is the fourth speaker. He describes his religious upbringing, and how it was not until his infant son’s questions cast his faith into doubt – and made him decide he didn’t want him to grow up in a superstitious world of fear. We welcome speaker five from Ukraine, a land ravaged by war and revolutions. Entrenched in chaos, he reminds us all of the power of believing in change no matter what, and to keep up the fight. Speaker six is from Iran. Growing up in a religious household and nation, he diligently studied not just the Koran, but the religious books of other religions. Eventually, he concluded it was all nonsense. Now, he follows a simple doctrine: to live a simple and happy life to the fullest. Abdullah is an ex-Muslim from Somalia who now lives in Malaysia and speaker seven. Struggling far from home, he calls for help, fearful that he will be deported back home – to almost certain death for apostasy. Speaker eight is Zack Ali, another Somalian who also reveals the hardships of living as an atheist in this war-torn, religious nation – Ali compares it to Saudi Arabia, where he used to live. Finally, Jesse from North Carolina is speaker nine. Growing up in a religious family and community, her atheism has lost her both friends and family. Despite her loneliness, she continues to ask important questions and answer them when she can. Share your story with us today, and we will broadcast it.
