19 May 2020 | PSP 167: What is Emotional Contamination OCD? | 00:23:35
OCD can wreak havoc in any family. But one sub-type of OCD that can be particularly painful is emotional contamination OCD. Emotional contamination issues can hurt family relationships and confuse parents.Sadly most people, even mental health professionals, understand very little about how OCD can manifest. OCD isn’t just about germs and constant cleaning. OCD has many themes and sub-types. It is so important for families raising kids with OCD to educate themselves on the various ways OCD can show up. The best defense against OCD is to recognize it’s many disguises. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I discuss what emotional contamination OCD is and how it shows up in children and teens.***You also don’t want to miss Alisha’s Picky Eating Workshop Series outlining the 2-Step Process to moving your child From picky eater to healthy child. It starts May 7th, 2020 but if you miss it, you can catch the replay. 15 Oct 2019 | PSP 139: Did You Know it is OCD Awareness Week? What that Means for You and Your Child | 00:28:48
I know there are a bazillion awareness weeks and months. Every cause, issue or disease has a color or a month. But I wanted to talk to you about why OCD Awareness Week is so important and how you can take part with even the smallest of gestures.OCD is one of the most misunderstood disorders. Which is sad considering it can be one of the most debilitating conditions a person can experience. Part of the reason OCD is so debilitating is due to the lack of understanding OCD. Kids are misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all.Stereotypes perpetuate shame and guilt.People remain quiet out of fear of embarrassment and labeling. So what could help with this? Knowledge. Spread the knowledge in any way you can. You can check out all the inspiring things the International OCD Foundation is doing this week to bring OCD awareness out from the shadows by clicking here.Help your child.Use this week to celebrate your child. Show them videos and pictures people are posting using the hashtag #FACEYOURFEAR and #OCDWEEK to show them how other people are being brave in support of them.Have a movie night where you make popcorn and watch the documentary Unstuck: an OCD Kids Movie.Educate yourself and others by taking my free online mini-course, Misunderstanding About Childhood OCD. Understand Your Child’s OCD. Learn the Facts. Enroll and watch it here.***Parents do you need more support? 15 Sep 2020 | PSP 184: Four Simple Steps to Help Kids Self-Regulate with Lauren Spigelmyer | 00:38:12
Many of our kids have a hard time self-regulating. Just like other skills, we often have to teach our kids how to successfully handle their difficult emotions. This can be especially hard for kids that have anxiety and OCD. 23 Jul 2019 | PSP 127: How to Help a Child with Lockdown Drills | 00:45:16
The kids are huddled in the corner of the room. It is dark. It is quiet. They are told not to talk. They are told to hide behind objects and lock the classroom door. Some kids are shaking. Some kids have wide eyes. This is not an emergency situation. These are lockdown drills. This can be very unnerving for any child, but for anxious children this has the potential to cause ongoing fear and panic. So what should parents do? Many of us avoid the topic unless our kids bring it up. But with at least 32 states requiring monthly lockdown drills, many of our kids are exposed to these drills over 10 times a school year. These are important drills (sadly), but how do we minimize the ongoing trauma these drills can evoke? I brought in just the person to answer these questions. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode, I talk to Nancy Kislin, a psychotherapist and author of Lock Down: Talking to Your Kids About School Violence. She brought so much insight to this topic and offered some solid, concrete steps anyone can take to help their children. To learn more about Nancy's work go to Lockdownbook.com *** This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? 09 Sep 2019 | PSP 134: Helping Kids Who Have a Fear of Bad Guys | 00:33:34
Hands down the number one fear I deal with as a child therapist is the fear of bad guys. It isn’t surprising. I remember being a child myself, sitting in my bed, blanket up to my neck, wondering not if, but when would I be attacked. The fear is often dealt with platitudes like:I’m right here Who is going to hurt you Nothing has ever happened to you Why do you worry so muchIn this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I explore why those platitudes aren’t helpful and what to do and say instead. To get a free PDF on 15 of some of the Most Common Reasons Why Kids are Scared to Sleep, go to: www.bit.ly/sleepfearsTo learn more about the sleep class go to: www.bit.ly/sleepclass19

19 Oct 2020 | PSP 189: Handling the Grief that Comes with an Anxiety or OCD Diagnosis | 00:37:24
Most of us had a fantasy of what parenting would look like. It might have involved Pinterest crafts, bake sales and play dates. It probably didn’t include hyperventilating, panic and avoidance. None of us signed up to parent a child with anxiety or OCD and most of us weren’t prepared to do it.It’s normal to have grief over what would have been. It’s normal to feel sad about the extra layer of struggles that were scooped onto your parental plate. But how do you move through that grief? How do you work through it so you are better equipped to help your child? In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the grief that most of us feel when raising a child with anxiety or OCD, myself included. I also talk about how to not get so lost in the weeds that you aren’t able to find your way out.To join my FREE 3-Part Video Series: Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD go to http://bit.ly/survivaltoolsforparents ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Let me become your $5 mini-coach. 05 Oct 2020 | PSP 187: Empowering Our Kids with Anxiety or OCD to Help Themselves | 00:33:23
We want the best for our kids. We want our kids to blossom and live a happy fulfilling life. But when our kids start to struggle with anxiety or OCD we might think that rosy picture is gone forever. We might think we have to “cure” anxiety or OCD for them to be well again. But that’s the wrong way to look at it. We don’t need to “cure” them, because that’s actually an impossibility, we need to train them. Kids with anxiety or OCD can have a beautifully productive and happy life, but they need the right tools and the right training to go along with it.In this latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about the importance in empowering our kids to help themselves and how to build their skills for long-term success. To join my FREE 3-Part Video Series: Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD go to http://bit.ly/survivaltoolsforparents ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Let me become your $5 mini-coach. 28 Oct 2019 | PSP 140: Talking All About Self Care with Dr. Orlena | 01:03:33
Does “self-care” equal “self-ish” to you? Often there is a negative connotation with the idea of focusing on yourself, especially when you have a child who is in crisis. Sadly, that is when self care is the most needed. When we are depleted, anxious or overwhelmed we are in no condition to help our kids. Believe it or not, the very first step in helping our kids with anxiety or OCD is to help ourselves. So how do you do that? Where do you start?I invited Dr. Orlena Kerek to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to talk to us all about self care! 25 Feb 2020 | PSP 155: An Adoptive Mom Talks About her Journey Raising a Child with Invisible Needs | 00:36:02
Many of us fantasized what parenthood would look like way before we had children. Our ideas of parenthood might have been solidified in early childhood, as we tucked our baby doll into her toy crib. Or it may have been dreamt about the moment we knew we were about to become a parent. But for some of us, the dream and reality didn’t match. Our children had issues. Our children had fears. Our children had struggles.Janelle Molony’s idea of motherhood wasn’t what she had imagined. After entering the world of foster care to adopt her child, she was thrown into a whirlwind of issues and struggles she wasn’t anticipating. In her memoir, Un-Adoptable? Faith Beyond Foster Care, she recounts her struggles and triumphs and how ultimately, she was able to move out of the darkness and into the light.I had the pleasure of talking with Janelle on this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast. Anxiety and OCD can take its toll. It can be exhausting, overwhelming and traumatizing for the whole family. So, when your child starts to make some big improvements, it’s normal to be worried about how long it will last. It’s normal to doubt the progress. You might ask yourself, “Is this for real? Is this the new normal?”Many of us live waiting for the other shoe to drop. I am TOTALLY guilty of this. Luckily, I have a husband who auto-corrects my anxious mind. I also work everyday to re-frame my catastrophic thinking. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I am talking about how to soak up your child’s success without living in the future of What if’s.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? 03 Aug 2020 | PSP 178: Helping Anxious Kids Who Crumble Under Pressure | 00:27:46
Anxious kids crumble under pressure for a variety of reasons. They might worry about deadlines and school work. They might worry about the social pressures of being called on or being watched. They might fear being less than perfect or being worse than others. They might have difficulties making decisions, worried about picking the wrong choice. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about why kids crumble under pressure and how to help them. Sometimes avoidance is actually a bigger issue called PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance). This is a subtype on the autistic spectrum. Currently it is not as well known in the United States. 23 Sep 2019 | PSP 136: How to Talk to Your Child When Something Bad Happened Locally or Globally | Dawn Huebner | 00:34:56
It seems like more and more these days we are having to cope with some horrific things. Mass shootings, school shootings, bombings, hate crimes, environmental disasters and devastating weather are things that we and our children have to contend with all too often. How do we talk to kids when something bad happened? It is tricky. Many of us just avoid it altogether. But unfortunately our kids do not live in a bubble.I invited Dawn Huebner to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to dive deeper into this topic. She is one of my absolute favorite authors! She is the author behind What to Do When You Worry too Much, Outsmarting Worry and What to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck…just to name a few!She has just released her new book called, Something Bad Happened. In her new book, she helps kids process local and global tragedies that are happening all around us. She gives a beautiful perspective and an uplifting view on a somber topic. On the podcast, Dawn offers some great advice for parents and gives her perspective on how to help our kids in these changing times. To check out her new book, Something Bad Happened go to: https://amzn.to/2m9j1Vu***To sign up for the free picky eating online workshop go to: www.bit.ly/pickyeatingworkshop19To enroll in Alisha Grogan's picky eating online class, go to: www.bit.ly/pickyeatingclass19

29 Jun 2020 | PSP 173: What to Do When Therapy isn’t Enough for a Child with Anxiety or OCD | 00:38:11
Your child needs help, but therapy isn’t cutting it. Maybe it’s because she refuses to go or perhaps it’s because her issues are just too intense for outpatient therapy. What’s a parent supposed to do when the help isn’t helping? Outpatient therapy is where the road starts, not where it ends. Many parents don’t realize that. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Sami, a member of my AT Parenting Community to discuss her journey trying to help her daughter with OCD. She discussed the process of getting her into a PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and her experience once she was in.Sami is also a Life Coach for teen girls. She offers programs to support teens, including a few that help anxious teens. 09 Jun 2020 | PSP 170: How to Help Anxious Kids Help Themselves | 00:25:46
It is hard to watch our anxious kids suffer. It is hard to stomach their pain. It is very tempting to swoop in and protect them. To soften their fall. To protect them from feeling discomfort. But that is robbing them of the opportunity to build their skills. I find that the best way to help anxious kids is to teach them how to help themselves. But easy to say, right? But how does one do that?In this week’s podcast episode I outline some of the ways parents can start to empower their kids to help themselves. 10 Nov 2020 | PSP 191: Should You Tell Your Child They Have Anxiety or OCD? | 00:45:37
Many parents worry about telling their child they have anxiety or OCD. Some worry about potentially labeling their kids. Some worry that it will make their child feel different. Others worry about the stigma the child will face.
In this week’s AT Parenting Survival episode, I dive deep into the pros and cons of telling your child that they have anxiety or OCD. I also explore the pros and cons of reading children’s books with various anxiety or OCD themes. Many parents worry that exposing a child to other anxiety or OCD themes, will cause them to “catch” new themes and make their struggles worse.

23 Nov 2020 | PSP 193: How to Not Pass Our Fears onto Our Kids | 00:27:00
Our kids are emotional sponges. They soak up our happiness, but they also soak up our fears. Often when trying to help our kids with anxiety we might project our own worries onto them. Sometimes we might spread our fear throughout the house. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I dive into three main topics. First, how do we keep our fears in check during this global pandemic and societal unrest so we don’t inadvertently spread those fears to our children? Second, how can we decipher what are our fears and what are our child’s fears? Sometimes we smush the two together and reality gets blurred. Lastly, how can we respond to our kids when their anxiety makes us anxious? What can we do when sitting with our children’s anxiety creates our own? *** This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. So your child has just crushed their anxiety or OCD. You are feeling on top of the world and so are they. Now what? This is often when the ball is dropped. It is often when the seeds of the next infestation of weeds are left to grow, unchecked and unmanaged. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Maintaining progress is just as important, if not more important. It is developing those life long skills and habits that will make anxiety and OCD manageable throughout their life. 15 Dec 2020 | PSP 196: How to Help Your Child with Anxiety or OCD Advocate for Themselves | 00:34:00
As much as we want to protect our child from anything and everything, it is important that we teach them how to advocate for themselves. This is especially true when our kids have anxiety or OCD. They need to know how to articulate how they feel and what they need. This is true in both the school environment and even to some extent in the home environment. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about how we can teach our kids the skills to advocate for themselves. A gift we can give them that will have long-term benefits! Your child is refusing to clean their room, go to bed or go to school. They are digging their heels in and it doesn’t look like they are going to budge. What are you supposed to do? Well if your child has anxiety or OCD, you might want to take an extra step and ask yourself, “Is this behavior caused by their anxiety or OCD?” Why does this matter? Does it mean you are going to give them a complete pass on both their behavior and the task at hand? Not exactly. It means you are going to approach it from a different angle. An angle that will help build your child’s skills so they can learn how to manage their anxiety or OCD. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about how to decipher if your child’s behavior is caused by their anxiety or OCD struggles. 19 Jan 2021 | PSP 201: How to Motivate Our Kids to Work on Anxiety or OCD | 00:48:22
One of the biggest challenges parents face when raising a child with anxiety or OCD is...motivation. How do we motivate our kids to face their fears? How do we motivate our kids to sit in discomfort? How do we motivate them to even talk about their struggles. That can feel like an uphill battle. And yet, if you don’t have buy-in, it will be like trying to drive while someone has their foot firmly on the brake. Our children’s struggles are their struggles, not ours. And only they will be able to take the necessary steps that will lead to long-term change. We can do our part by reducing our accommodations and our role in the anxiety or OCD, but the rest will be up to them. So that brings us back to motivation. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I invited Dr. Amy Jenks, an anxiety & OCD therapist in the Bay Area to chat with me about how to help parents motivate their kids to work on anxiety or OCD. 25 Jan 2021 | PSP 202: Why Mental Health Professionals are Missing Signs of OCD and The Damage it Causes | 00:59:05
When you get assessed by a mental health professional you assume that they would be well versed in all possible diagnoses. You assume they will identify, diagnose and treat any possible mental health struggle. Unfortunately that assumption is not only wrong, but dangerous. OCD seems to be the step-child of mental health education and training. Which is mind boggling considering, according to the International OCD Foundation, 1 out of 100 adults have OCD and 1 out of 200 children and teens do as well. Think about that for a moment. The same amount of children have OCD as Diabetes. This is not a rare mental health disorder, and yet there is this pervasive lack of training and expertise around the issue. Mental health professionals aren’t given the education in their graduate programs. They are often not taught that OCD is not just about washing hands or tapping some magical number. They often don’t realize that a person can have OCD if they have an intrusive thought that they are a bad person and they need to confess all their “bad” thoughts to those they love. They often don’t understand that a person can have OCD if they have an intrusive feeling that they might stop breathing, so they have to continually take deep breaths. Or that a person can have OCD if they have an intrusive thought that they want to harm others or themselves. That one in particular can be dire in the hands of a mental health professional who does not understand OCD. According to the International OCD Foundation (link: https://iocdf.org/professionals/training-institute/ for that statement), on average it can take someone up to 17 years from the onset of symptoms to get properly diagnosed and begin receiving effective treatment. That is unacceptable. In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk to Cameron Kleimo, a mom and therapist who has a similar story to my own. Her graduate program didn’t teach her how to spot OCD. And it wasn’t until she was stumped by her own child’s behavior that she discovered that they both had OCD. 01 Feb 2021 | PSP 203: How Online Support Can Be A Game Changer for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD | 00:45:14
There are common stories among parents raising kids with anxiety or OCD. Stories of struggling to find a well trained anxiety or OCD child therapist. Stories of feeling isolated and alone. Stories of friends, family or the school not fully getting the depths of their child’s struggles. These are stories that don’t have to continue. There is plenty of support out there. Support that can reach every corner of the globe - you just need to know where to find it. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk with Jo, a mom from the UK, who was feeling lost and overwhelmed on how to help her daughter. She was lost until she discovered online resources that helped guide her on what to do next. 01 Mar 2021 | PSP 204: Update on Tragedy that has Devastated Our Family | 00:23:19
For those of you that aren’t aware, my husband died suddenly of a blood clot ten days after a minor Achilles surgery. The grief has been all consuming for me and my three children. I know my podcast, youtube channel, social media posts and emails have abruptly stopped almost a month ago and I didn’t have the energy to even explain why. I was touched by all the outpouring of love from around the world from those that heard about my loss. I wanted to thank everyone who reached out, mailed me cards and donated to the gofundme account that circulated FB. The love was definitely felt from all directions and was so appreciated. After he died I decided to close my practice, as my hours were only evenings and weekends, the time my kids will need me the most. My online resources, classes and AT Parenting Community membership will be my sole focus moving forward. Currently I plan on returning to my online work on April 1st. I made this video to be played at my husband’s funeral more for his co-workers than for me. Even though it is raw and vulnerable I was encouraged to share it more broadly and I decided to do so in the hopes it could impact even one more person to live a life full of love and connection. Click here to watch it: https://vimeo.com/516303126/7ee978deb7 To help grieving children deal with the loss of their parent, you can donate in honor of Jimmie Daniels at https://billysplace.me. They have been a complete godsend for our family during this time. We are still grieving, so please accept my apologies for not commenting or responding if you reach out. I am going to be staying off social media until I return on April 1st. *** This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. 06 Apr 2021 | PSP 205: Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Cope with Grief or Trauma | 00:30:09
It’s hard enough to have anxiety or OCD, but what happens when your child is hit with grief or trauma? It can feel like a muddy, chaotic mess. Unfortunately life happens and so do tragedies. Our kids are not immune to life happening to them, I wish they were. Anxiety and OCD are opportunistic. It will feed off the grief and trauma by trying to grow new themes and new compulsions. Our family has suffered an unthinkable and sudden loss. My children are grieving the loss of their father. That alone would be an insurmountable feat. But they are also quietly fighting off another more subtle battle. The battle of an opportunistic disorder that thrives in chaos and tries to piggyback on any of life’s struggles. In this episode I talk about how to keep your head above water, while trying to make sure that your child’s anxiety or OCD doesn’t gain momentum. *** This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. 13 Apr 2021 | PSP 206: How Self-Esteem Plays a Role in Kids with Anxiety or OCD | 00:35:22
Anxiety and OCD will often take a swing at our child’s self-esteem. It can do that with the anxious or intrusive thoughts it bombards them with. It can do that by paralyzing them with fear, as they watch their peers not struggle. It can also be present alongside anxiety or OCD. It can help pick their anxiety or OCD themes. Social anxiety, perfectionism and Moral OCD all use self-esteem in their arsenal of weapons. In this podcast, I explore how self-esteem dances with anxiety and OCD. I will highlight what areas to look into and talk about how focusing on your child’s self-esteem will in turn help their battle with anxiety and OCD. 20 Apr 2021 | PSP 207: How to Help Kids Who are Scared of Bugs | 00:33:53
Many kids and even adults are scared of bugs. But for some of our kids it goes way beyond that. Perhaps they won’t go outside, won’t go to the park or won’t go swimming because of their fear of insects. Maybe they are worried about taking a shower or a bath or even going to the bathroom. What are you supposed to do to help your child move through such a debilitating fear of bugs? In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about some of the approaches I take when trying to help a child with their fear of bugs. 04 May 2021 | PSP 209: Helping Anxious Kids Change Teachers or Therapists | 00:28:48
Change is hard on most kids, but it can be especially hard on anxious kids. So what happens when they have to change their teacher or therapist? It can be rough, especially if they were well bonded to the teacher or therapist before the change. Change offers our kids the ability to practice flexibility and can build their adaptation skills. The question is how to do that - especially when they are devastated by the loss. 11 May 2021 | PSP 210: How to Help Kids with Anxiety or OCD When They are Angry | 00:39:30
Kids with anxiety or OCD aren’t just fearful, often they are angry. Anxiety and OCD can cause kids to rage, meltdown and talk back. It can make them dig their heels in and be oppositional. But when parents react to those behaviors in “typical” ways, they often hit a brick wall. Why? Because often anxiety and OCD is the undercurrent driving those emotions. So if you don’t address the undercurrent, you're missing a crucial piece of the puzzle. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to differentiate between developmentally typical anger vs anxiety or OCD triggered anger. I also talk about the counterintuitive approach to take when you know that the anger was caused by your child’s anxiety or OCD. 18 May 2021 | PSP 211: Why Anxiety or OCD Therapy is Not Enough for Our Kids | 00:36:01
Many of us think that if only we can find a qualified anxiety or OCD child therapist, all of our child’s struggles would go away. I wish that were true. I wish that was the case for the children that I have treated and for my own children. But the truth is, as parents we have a major role in how our children do. Even if they are refusing help, there are things we do that can help or hurt the situation. There are things that we need to do for ourselves as well in order to survive. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about what our role is as parents and how it can help our kids. For more ongoing support join The AT Parenting Community. 08 Jun 2021 | PSP 213: When You Hit Compassion Fatigue with Your Child’s Anxiety or OCD | 00:48:20
None of us signed up to raise a child with anxiety or OCD. It wasn’t what we dreamed of when we poured over all the pregnancy and parenting books. And yet, here we all are, trying to not only survive, but thrive with our kids and their struggles. What happens when compassion runs dry? What happens when we feel resentful or angry at our kids or the situation? You are not alone if you’ve experienced those feelings. In fact, to be real, most of us have at one point or another. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about what parental compassion fatigue is, what the symptoms are and how we can navigate through it. [A Radical Awakening is] one of those books you will want to keep on your nightstand.” In my interview with Dr. Shefali I dive deeper into what it means to be a parent and mother to kids with anxiety and OCD. We talk about how we separate their pain and their journey from our own. We go into how to live our own authentic truth and become free from the burden of living in judgment. 29 Jun 2021 | PSP 216: Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Develop Self-Compassion | 00:36:15
Kids with anxiety and OCD often struggle with self-love and self-compassion. It is developmentally common for all kids to struggle with self-compassion, but when you have anxiety and OCD it can be even harder. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk with Madina Alam, a Clinical Advisor with NOCD about how we, as parents, can help our kids develop more self-compassion. When kids have more self-compassion, they are also more empowered to work on their issues! So working on this can be powerful. This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. 13 Jul 2021 | PSP 218: The Power of Helping Your Child’s Anxiety by Working on Your Own | 00:44:30
Anxiety and OCD doesn’t live in a bubble, it lives in our house. As parents we have to walk the walk and talk the talk. But what does that mean? It means tapping into our own fears, regardless of whether we have anxiety or OCD ourselves. It means knowing ourselves and the human fears that come with it. It means walking towards fear and discomfort the way we ask our kids to do. In this AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode I talk about why it’s important for all parents to examine their own fears to help their kids. I also talk about how to start doing it! 20 Jul 2021 | PSP 219: How to Help a Child with Both Autism and OCD | 00:42:04
Many parents who are raising children with both Autism and OCD find themselves in a no man’s land of sorts. Professionals treating Autism don’t always understand OCD and those treating OCD don’t always understand Autism. Ugh. What a struggle. 17 Aug 2021 | PSP 223: How to Not Compare Your Child to Other Kids | 00:45:17
The comparing game can be so tempting. Why can her kids do that and mine can’t? Why is it so easy for them and everything is so difficult for us? Why do we have to go through this? I wish my child was like that. Trust me I get it, I live it. But in this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to get out of that mindset or at least not live in it permanently. 24 Aug 2021 | PSP 224: How to Handle When You and Your Child Both have Anxiety or OCD | 00:46:35
Anxiety and OCD are both highly genetic, so it’s not surprising that many parents find themselves raising kids with similar issues. Often though, many of us back burner our own help to focus on our children’s needs. But what if focusing on your needs also helps your child’s struggles? In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk to Nathan Peterson, an anxiety and OCD therapist, a YouTuber and a course creator. We talk about how our children’s issues can overlap with our own, and what to do about it. To learn more about Nathan’s courses click here. 31 Aug 2021 | PSP 225: The Difference Between Obsessions and Compulsions (and why it matters)! | 00:37:21
The biggest gift we can give our kids with OCD is knowledge. The more they understand how OCD works, the more effective they’ll be at crushing it. One of the biggest areas of confusion is the difference between obsessions and compulsions and why it matters. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I explain the difference between obsessions and compulsions and how to use that understanding to be more effective when dealing with our child’s OCD. 14 Sep 2021 | PSP 227: Why We Can’t Make Our Child’s Anxiety or OCD Go Away | 00:56:25
None of us like to see our kids suffer. That’s why it’s so hard to see our kids struggle with anxiety or OCD. It can consume their life and ours and that’s heartbreaking. But no matter how badly we would like to take their anxiety or OCD away from them, we just don’t have the power to do so. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about how we often try to make our children’s anxiety or OCD go away, and why it doesn’t work - and sometimes makes it worse. I also cover our role in their journey and the things we can do to make long-term prognosis brighter. Also, thanks to those of you who have supported my son’s Etsy store and made him feel empowered and confident! *** This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. 21 Sep 2021 | PSP 228: Teaching Our Kids with OCD and Anxiety Self-Compassion with Kimberley Quinlan | 00:43:42
Anxiety and OCD can bring with it distress, fear and discomfort. But it can also bring self-loathing, shame, guilt and negative self-talk. When our kids are hard on themselves, their issues can compound, making it difficult for them to use their tools to address anxiety or OCD. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I invited Kimberley Quinlan on to talk about how self-compassion plays a large role in the journey of anxiety and OCD. She talks about why it can be difficult to have self-compassion and the ways in which we can grow and foster it. Kimberley’s book, The Self- Compassion Workbook for OCD comes out October 1, 2021. Most people aren’t thrilled to get a shot or get poked by a needle, but some of our kids are deathly afraid.
