This episode features my interview with co-creator of the 'Asians Strike Back' Comedy Show which highlights the topics of racism & misinformation, Kyle Marian. Kyle Marian is a comedian, producer, science communications consultant, & former physical anthropologist.

She produces & hosts socially-mindful, inclusive, & accessible comedy shows. She and Esther Chen have decided to combat coronavirus-based racism with comedy and science.

In response to the racism they were witnessing, Marian and Chen hosted their comedy show “Asians Strike Back: A Coronavirus Comedy & Science Show” on March 1, 2020.

The show had both Asian comedians and scientists discuss the pandemic with both jokes and information on how to properly prevent the spread of the virus.

They worked with Symposium: Academic StandUp and the Caveat to host the event in New York City. When I interviewed Kyle, it was just after COVID-19 had been officially declared a pandemic by the WHO.

For this Association Chat, we talk about establishing and maintaining your health journey over the busy holiday season, carving out time for your own self-care in between holiday parties, considerations for the office (when cookies and candies abound!) and health-conscious options for your learner participating in association programs throughout the holiday season.

More information about the inception and establishment of this group is available here.

After spending nearly 20 years in the hospitality and meetings industry, Angela Pelc has transitioned into the health and fitness world.

Angela has been on board with HBA since it's inception and works with the moderator team to make this a useful and inspirational community to support busy professionals who have health and fitness goals.

Angela believes in daily activity and has completed several Beachbody workout programs, and also loves both running and yoga.

CURIOSITY, COMMUNITY, and DEEPER CONNECTION | Andrew Horn Guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien

How do You Avoid Auto-Piloting Your Life?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

As you begin your day in whatever your morning routine looks like, I want you to think about what life would look like if you weren’t operating out of fear and opted instead to move in a more purposeful direction. One with intent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Would you hide from meeting people or get excited about the chance to learn about someone else’s experience? Would you be in a rush to make the numbers or opt instead for building a relationship?

From the time we are born, so many of us seem to witness a loss in our curiosity about ourselves, others, and in the world around us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Why is that? Can we change it? If so, how?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For this interview, I talk with the man who has been called "the Dale Carnegie for the Digital Age," Andrew Horn.

I ask him about meaningful conversations, Social Flow, and his thoughts about community. I hope you enjoy it.

23 May 2019Tribes & Trust: #COLLISIONCONF Interview with Centric Executive Director and Jawbrain Principal00:12:55
One of the best things I love about attending conferences is meeting new people and finding out about the amazing work that they do. It is fortifying.

When my friend, Lauren, tagged me and a person named Jason Williams on a post, suggesting we connect while attending the Collision technology conference in Toronto, I quickly did some Google sleuthing to find out more about the person I was about to meet.

Once I did that, I *knew* I had to get some time for a mini-interview with Jason.

Jason is the Executive Director for Centric, a 501c3 nonprofit that connects, educates and celebrates Indiana's problem solvers. Centric exists to increase the recognition of Indiana as a global center of innovation.

From their initial gatherings in 2007, Jason and his crew have built an incredible community of people and companies that spans industries and creates serendipity that may never occur otherwise.

I sat down with Jason to get to know him better and to make the most of Collision conference, where I wanted to ask entrepreneurs and tech leaders about community, trust, and technology. I hope you enjoy!

07 Jan 2019Setting Boundaries Isn’t Easy00:04:57

When I reflected on 2018 and my biggest regrets over the year, thinking about the times I had my most negative experiences, it almost always had to do with not setting appropriate boundaries. These examples could usually be summed up with the saying, “no good deed goes unpunished.”

How do you know when to say, “sorry, I can’t”?

Twitter: @songadaymann

This show is all about creativity and persistence. Many people who promise they’ll do something consistently, creative or not, give up on it. Maybe they give up for a moment or maybe it's a lifetime.

But in this show, we meet someone who decided to do something every day in January of 2009 and 10 years later he's still doing it.

What can we learn about creativity and persistence from the man who holds the Guinness World Record for Most Consecutive Days Writing a Song?

Jonathan Mann is an American singer-songwriter, best known for creating and publishing a new song and video each day since January 2009, under the YouTube channel named "Song A Day."

24 Jun 2020Can You Become a Collaborator with Your Competitor?00:58:39

In a Forbes article titled, "Why Collaborating With Your Competition Can Be A Great Idea," the author shared research indicating that "coopetition" could be a financial win for the organizations that opt to go that direction.

Becoming a collaborator with your competitor can be a challenge, but it might be the best thing you do. For this episode of the Chat, I talk with Tahira Endean and Mahoganey Jones about the ways competitors can work together and why we should all consider it.

15 Feb 2019#88 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND INNOVATION FOR ASSOCIATIONS | Ron Moen Guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien00:50:25

How can the power of AI work as a tool to boost existing products and services and can it help us reimagine the membership experience?

We explore this heady topic with special guest Ron Moen who is the CIO at CHEST.

Ron and his team serve at the intersection of people, process, and technology - in the premier innovative organization for chest medicine professionals around the world. CHEST constituents and staff are champions for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the lungs (www.chestnet.org).

CHEST's 35,000 sq ft Innovation and Simulation Center is world renowned, and unique among medical societies (www.chestmeetingcenter.com).

Ron is constantly connecting – people to people, technology to technology, and people to technology – in support of mission.

Ron's Strengthsfinder talents are Ideation, Includer, Maximizer, Positivity and WOO.

Questions

  1. You just came back from a conference that you were telling me about that wasn’t targeting association CIOs, but was all about a topic that I’d think every CIO (or assn exec of any kind) would be interested in...could you talk to me a little bit more about that?
  2. Non-dues revenue is a popular topic in our world of associations. What kind of ideas inspired by tech capabilities are you having these days about how your org (or others) might leverage AI, ML, or data analytics in the non-dues revenue realm? [In other words and using a dated reference, “Show me the money!”]
  3. What about buying and selling data? I know you recently had a chance to attend the DataMoney Conference in New York, which is not a conference targeting association execs, but definitely an important conference for associations who have such a fountain of data they are working with...any big lessons from the conference in regards to buying and selling data in a smart “good guy” kinda way? :)
  4. What are some of the questions association executives should be asking about their organization’s use of AI and data analytics?
  5. What about technology advancing faster than our understanding of it and the ethical issues that arise? What are some of the danger zones for mixing tech like machine learning with data management that is less than safe? Are there other ethical areas involving tech association execs should think about?
  6. What websites, books, podcasts, magazines, people do you regularly check-in with to make sure you stay on top of those things you care about the most?
  7. What’s the best way for people to connect with you about speaking or anything else?

#88 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND INNOVATION FOR ASSOCIATIONS | Ron Moen Guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien

27 Sep 2022The Association CEOs Guide to Leadership with Paul Belford00:49:57

"As a mostly learn-by-doing career, the experience and training of the association CEO is routinely idiosyncratic—moving up through the ranks in associations of varying sizes, types and cultures. And for the mid-career executive, thrust fresh and new into the world of associations at the CEO level, a holistic look at the association CEO position can be even more crucial." [https://www.associationceohandbook.com/]

Join KiKi L'Italien as she interviews the author of The Association CEO Handbook Paul Belford about the role of the association CEO in today's environment.

Outside of his client work in executive search, Paul is the author of Planning Your Career in Association Management, published in 2002 by the American Society of Association Executives, and has spoken about career-development at ASAE meetings and those of its Allied Societies.

He has also served on the CEO Advisory Council of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives, as well as on three of their compensation survey councils.

He also authored The Association CEO Handbook, the second edition of which was released in 2019. Much of the content and direction of the second edition was sourced from 10 sessions of the Association CEO Masters Seminar launched in 2016 and for which he serves as Director.

Prior to his career in executive search, Paul spent 11 years with PhRMA, a major Washington, D.C-based trade association, where he was responsible for international issues management.

He has also worked for the U.S. government, including six years as an International Economist in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at the Treasury Department. An Accounting graduate of Boston College, Paul has an M.A. in Economics from Fordham University.

28 Sep 2017The Drones Episode00:56:03

Drones – Amazing technology offering opportunities and dilemmas for all of us! But how much do you really know about drones and what do you NEED to know in order to do your due diligence as a leader?

Meet the extreme leader of Geoteaming – John Chen. He climbs mountains, walks on fire, swims with dolphins in the wild, rides Harleys and snowboards out of helicopters. He's also been doing some pretty amazing things using drones at events.

Sounds cool, right?

But what kinds of things EXACTLY can we do with drones at our meetings? What are the possibilities? What are the concerns? What are some of the legal issues we need to be aware of?

These are a lot of questions for one person, so for this episode of Association Chat, I also brought on expert photographer Chuck Fazio whom you might remember from a previous episode. He's also been using drones at meetings and when John and Chuck get talking, some amazing things happen...including the potential birth of a NEW ASSOCIATION!

“With every big risk comes a hidden reward. It may not be what you think it is, it may be better!”  – John Chen

What role have mentors played in your life? Chances are, whether they were called "mentors" or not, there are individuals you have learned from and whom you credit with teaching you some of your best lessons in life.

When Cecilia Sepp, CAE, saw yet another online post featuring someone looking for a mentor in the association space, she took notice and did something.

This Thursday I'll talk with Cecilia Sepp about the new program she created, the Association Mentoring Network, asking her about mentoring, the program itself, and why something like AMN is needed more now than ever.

20 Apr 2017How Will Trump's Presidency Impact Your Association? ASAE and the Leader's Path Forward 00:53:00

Remember atmosphere around the 2016 Presidential Election and the discussion happening in the association and non-profit realm at that time?

Where are we now?

This Association Chat with the CEO and Chair of American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) discussed leading in times of uncertainty.

No matter which administration is in office, we all have to find ways to work together. What that work looks like, how we conduct it, and all the related nuances can be challenging for any association leader. But what about when you're the leader of the association of associations?

For this Association Chat, we'll find out how the leaders of ASAE are anticipating and handling these challenges following a divisive US presidential election.

What are their challenges, what are they hearing from members and how are they communicating with them? And what do they see as they lead ASAE into a more complex future that likely includes increasing concerns regarding D+I and many other issues too?

This is a special Q&A you don't want to miss.

"As association leaders, we have a unique challenge and opportunity ahead of us. Associations have always made a difference, and our role has never been more important." - John Graham, CEO of ASAE

11 Oct 2017Talent Generation00:33:20

Welcome to the Talent Economy—a 21st century economy characterized by unprecedented innovation, connectivity, disruption, and opportunity.

Unfortunately, the positive attributes of this economy have been largely overshadowed thus far. With job satisfaction declining across three decades, employee turnover costing organizations billions, profitability shrinking, and millions of Boomers retiring, the impetus to close the widening gap between talent-development practices and business impact has never been greater.

For too long, we’ve just assumed there is no other way. But Sarah Sladek proves there is another way.

Drawing from documented workforce and talent-development research, as well as her own ongoing study of generational impacts, her presentation cites numerous examples of organizations that have been capable of engaging employees in this era of disruption—what they did, why it worked, and how it’s made a difference to the organizations’ outlook and bottom line.

Sladek proves that it’s possible to create an organization designed to engage talent, and she provides audiences with the guidance to do it.

About the Author

Sarah Sladek was leading the charge for organizations and companies to adapt to younger generations long before anybody else. Concerned about declining engagement in our nation’s membership associations, non-profits, and workplaces, Sarah Sladek founded XYZ University in 2002 and her fifth book, Talent Generation, will be published this year.

27 Oct 2019How to Read People and Diffuse Crisis00:55:47

Host KiKi L’Italien interviews two experts to tell us what we can learn about convincing others from a crisis communications expert and hostage negotiator!

Communications expert Adele Cehrs and former FBI special agent and hostage negotiator Chip Massey talks with Association Chat about advanced communications skills every leader needs.

Body language can be super revealing. But did you know that FBI hostage negotiators do about 90% of their work over the phone, where body language isn’t even a factor? They use the power of their voice to connect with others and get what they’re after. It’s like closing a sale over a call.

Whether you’re diffusing a crisis situation or trying to get a new client, everyone wants to get better at reading people. Learn some super comms skills in this interview with Association Chat!

12 Sep 2022Event Design Can Save Your Conference with Ruud Janssen00:50:18

Today’s Nonprofit Business Model often relies heavily on meetings and events. Whether it is for commitment to cause, content, or community; all we know is that the value proposition for an association often finds an important channel in its events.

But what happens when attendance begins to slide? What happens when the value of that value proposition doesn’t seem to be what it used to be? Can Event Design Save Your Conference?

Ruud Janssen is an events industry powerhouse. You may have already seen his work if you’ve looked through tools like Miro or Mural and discovered a design tool called the Event Model Canvas.

Ruud is an international speaker, facilitator, and designer of high-stakes conferences & events. He is the Author of the Event Design Handbook (2016) and Design to Change (2021) and he serves as co-founder of Event Design Collective (http://edco.global).

He helps organizations innovate by thinking differently based on functional, social, and technological advancements using business and event model innovation.

  • Can you share the story with us about the Event Model Canvas, which is such a popular and helpful tool for people to know about? Why did you co-create it and how the Event Model Canvas, MURAL, and the Internet Society all collaborate on this effort?
  • Where do you typically see most associations getting their event design wrong?
  • So talk to me about #HorizonsOfChange and how that’s built upon the Event Canvas…
  • Has anything changed events or event design forever, in your mind, since COVID came along?
  • How does the format – in-person/virtual/hybrid - asynchronous or synchronous impact event design?
  • What are your favorite practical ways to change the emotional state of participants?
  • What are some stand out examples of events that have the Ruud Janssen Stamp of Approval for being well-designed?
  • What is the best next step any association executive can take after hearing our discussion today?
21 Jul 2017Imposter Complex00:27:52

Tanya Geisler – certified Life and Business Coach (CPCC), TEDxWomen speaker, and writer – teaches women how to step into their starring roles, own their authority, and overcome the Impostor Complex in their life, in their work, and in their life’s work.

"Impostor Complex is the number one thing that keeps people from activating their brilliance, stepping into what’s possible for themselves and their lives, and keeps people from their dreams."

03 Jun 2019A Song Of The Future [DAILY BRIEFING]00:03:13

I’ve been writing more lately than in any of the years since college. And one thing I can say with certainty is that once you begin showing up for the writing, the words you choose, the words you notice, begin to change.

Today I want to start you off with some words that inspired me this morning.

A Song Of The Future

Sail fast, sail fast,

Ark of my hopes, Ark of my dreams;

Sweep lordly o'er the drowned Past,

Fly glittering through the sun's strange beams;

Sail fast, sail fast.

Breaths of new buds from off some drying lea

With news about the Future scent the sea:

My brain is beating like the heart of Haste:

I'll loose me a bird upon this Present waste;

Go, trembling song,

And stay not long; oh, stay not long:

Thou'rt only a gray and sober dove,

But thine eye is faith and thy wing is love.

05 Feb 2019#87 FROM HOLLYWOOD TO SILICON VALLEY| Eric Kuhn Guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien00:59:11

About our guest: Eric Kuhn is a successful entrepreneur sitting at the intersection of media, entertainment and technology.

Most recently he helped start and run Layer3 TV, a next-generation cable provider that sold to T-Mobile.  Previously Eric was Hollywood’s first “social media agent” at United Talent Agency where he represented some of the industry’s top writers, directors, actors and producers on investments, digital strategy and social media.

In 2009 Eric became CNN’s Audience Interaction Producer, running social media and producing some of the first television programs that integrated digital platforms. He also is responsible for launching the National Basketball Association and CBS News on social media.

Passionate about the arts, this season he produced his first Broadway show: Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song. He also sits on the boards of Lincoln Center Theater and SeriesFest (an award-winning festival dedicated to showcasing episodic storytelling from around the world).

Questions:

  1. What are you the most excited about in tech these days (that you can talk about) + why?
  2. What kind of impact might this have on associations and nonprofits?
  3. You and some of your collaborators have worked on projects with an intention to include social impact elements.  How do you think association leaders might consider incorporating more social impact projects into their own meetings and events? Any words of advice?
  4. During your career, you’ve helped some of the entertainment industry’s biggest names better represent themselves and connect using technology. What can an association executive do today to raise their profile and stand out using social media in a noisy and saturated digital landscape?
  5. You’ve been called the “Father of Influencers” - what do you think most people get wrong about influencer marketing?
  6. What are some major mistakes you’ve seen people make with their social media use that that Association Chat viewers should avoid at all costs?
  7. Another great talent of yours is navigating the business of technology. Based on your own experience, what areas of technological growth should leaders be paying special attention to these days?
  8. You are always on the go, always traveling, always working, and yet you stay at the forefront of many different things: Technology, business, theater, ...what have you had to sacrifice time-wise in order to make it all work?
  9. What websites, books, podcasts, magazines, people do you regularly check-in with to make sure you stay on top of those things you care about the most?
  10. What’s the best way for people to connect with you about speaking or anything else?

07 Oct 2020Why Demographic Stereotypes Must Die00:54:33

Instead of relying on guesswork and opinion to understand why groups of people behave the way they do, today’s technology allows us to analyze and synthesize data.

When we truly understand what we all value most, we can unleash enormous passion and power. This is the fundamental disruption of our time: we can now predict and influence what people will do next.

David Allison, founder of The Valuegraphics Database, is our guest for this episode of Association Chat podcast. After a career spent developing ideas and concepts to engage stakeholders for several hundred organizations, David Allison recognized the need for a more scientific method to determine what really influences people to do the things they do.

The result is The Valuegraphics Database, the first global dataset created specifically to help organizations predict and influence behavior using the values we share.

My favorite quote from this interview came right at the end.

"If you need any proof that demographics are harmful and hurtful and divisive, and cause all kinds of strife in our world; I'll point you to a few examples. Black Lives Matter. The Gay Rights Movement. The Women's Rights Movement.

These are all demographics, demographic groups, standing up and saying, 'Do not treat me like a demographic. Treat me like a human being. Do not judge me based on my gender, my sexual orientation, the color of my skin. None of that matters. I just want to be a human, like the rest of you.'

I can't think of any more powerful condemnation of how terrible demographics are for our society."

03 Aug 2020How to Change the Status Quo through Narrative Intelligence00:53:58
Join Association Chat host KiKi L'Italien as she interviews founder of TheNewQuo.com Christina Blacken about using leadership and narrative intelligence for addressing culture change and inclusion.

Some of the questions discussed during the show:
  • What is The New Quo?
  • Why are stories so important for us to understand when trying to change the status quo?
  • What do leaders need to know about the role that narrative intelligence plays in driving behavior and making change happen? - Is the social contract broken?
  • Is our social contract something that can be repaired and improved?
  • How can association leaders make the biggest difference in addressing inequality internally with their staff and externally with their members and organizational stakeholders?
  • What are signs or signals to a leader that shows that they are on the right path with regard to creating meaningful change with regard to equality? What is a sign that maybe they aren’t?

Christina Blacken is a public speaker, performer, podcast host of "Sway them in Color," and founder of TheNewQuo.com. The New Quo is a leadership development and communication consultancy helping leaders tap into their narrative intelligence and the psychological power of story to transform behavior, build an inclusive culture, and communicate new ideas with deeper connection and influence to achieve their goals. She provides professional development training on inclusive leadership and copywriting services for underrepresented founders, and has taught 445 leaders how to transform themselves, their habits, and their workplace cultures on the topics of imposter syndrome, unconscious bias, and culture change. Before running her business, she worked for 10 years in corporate America using stories to drive change including inspiring 300k teens to take action on pro-social causes, and closing 6.5M in sales with the teams and household brands she's worked with. The New Quo has been featured in Elle.com, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Huffington Post, Forbes, Business Insider, and Thrive.com among other outlets.

08 Jun 2018Association Chat News Daily Flash Briefing - June 8, 201800:02:20

Association Chat News Daily Flash Briefing

Some sad news this morning as we learned of Anthony Bourdain’s death by an apparent suicide – Bourdain was a chef, author, and TV personality who also appeared years ago at an ASAE conference to talk about lessons about management from running a kitchen.

Bourdain's suicide may not be association news specifically, but it does impact us all.

There is an epidemic of suicide in the United States and Bourdain’s death and fashion designer Kate Spade’s unexpected suicide earlier this week has brought a focus to this situation in Americans’ minds.

Why is this happening and what can we do about it? How can we identify the signals in others that they may be in danger? What can associations do to curb this problem?

There are a lot of questions to be sure. More than what this Flash Briefing can contend with.

Perhaps as we go through our day today we think on this and discuss it with each other online.

Or call each other.

Or actually meet with each other in person.

Maybe we do something instead of shaking our heads and moving along.

Maybe.

This wasn’t the Flash Briefing I had in mind to post for today, but I had to share it.

I’ll post another briefing later with more information about next week’s events and some info on things that happened this week, including some excerpts from my interview with association contrarian Jeff De Cagna.

Please let me know if this news of suicide is getting to you too. Send me a message on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram @kikilitalien or email me kiki@amplifiedgrowth.net and let me know.

If you are thinking about suicide...if you or anyone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline @800273TALK (8255).

01 Oct 2018This Week in Associations (Week of 10/1/18)00:05:38

Welcome to Association Chat News! I’m your host, KiKi L’Italien, and let’s talk about this Association Chat News flash briefing for the first week of October – October 1, 2018.

This is the 4th quarter of 2018 and this is about the time we start to see a few predictable things happen in the association space.

  • Fall Conference Season is still rockin’ and rollin’ throughout October
  • Folks are looking at how to meet goals by the end of the year
  • We’re all beginning to look at what we need to do for the next year

If you are in any kind of communications or marketing, you are already looking at the “How to End 2018 Strong” or “Top Trends to Know About for 2019” types of content.

As much as I like to smirk at titles like this, I click on more of those types of items than anyone else. Here’s what I’m thinking are my “Top Three Ways to End 2018 Strong for Association Chat”:

  1. Invest in the community: Host at least one Association Chat Happy Hour in the DC Area - I want to try to connect with association folks in the DMV area (or anyone visiting) in-person, bringing together the Association Women in Tech people, the CIO Leaders group, the Idea Swap regulars, and all the others. Watch and listen for when/where this is happening in October. I’ve already got a sponsor for it and I think this will be fantastic!
  2. Deliver the best content: It seems like there are great needs and desires in our industry to understand things like intellectual property and innovation - both on the creator’s side and on the organization side - and I would like to learn more about this and bring some experts to you so they can help us all make better decisions. Watch in the coming weeks for interviews and content surrounding these topics.
  3. Diversify the voices: Over the years I’ve tried all kinds of things to bring different types of content, formats, and viewpoints to the Chat. Struggles with time, money, and other resources have made this difficult, but I think I’ve found a way to do this in a way that maintains the spirit and quality control needed for Chat content while keeping me compliant with the law and not adding more of a time issue to my own shoulders. I’m excited to share with you that I am working with some partners on bringing you some fresh, new, UNIQUE content in the upcoming months that will add value and hopefully inspire you to do bigger, better, and more.

So that’s my Association Chat plan for the last three months of 2018. What’s on your agenda? Share your plans with me by tweeting me @kikilitalien using the hashtag #associationflash. I’m curious to find out what others are planning and I think sharing our goals can sometimes lead to better outcomes.

On this week’s Chat interview I talk with American Mensa Ed/CEO Trevor Mitchell about how Mensa is leveraging cultural influences to enhance its brand through new partnership and licensing opportunities, as well as discussing how the membership is shaping the perception, our perception, of high intelligence.

You can hear all that and more on Tuesday’s chat live at 2 pm EST.

Be sure to visit the Association Chat Facebook Group and if you love this flash briefing and live interviews, please consider becoming an Association Chat Patreon patron. You can support these efforts for as little as $1 a month.

Check back in later for the next Association Chat News flash briefing and be sure to sign up on the associationchat.com mailing list so you never miss out on another flash briefing!

Have a great week everyone!

25 Aug 2020Mo Rocca, Mobituaries, and the Role of Humor in Times of Adversity01:01:02

“CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent Mo Rocca explains what drew him to highlight stories about historical figures that many people may not know about.

Many things have changed because of the current pandemic, but one thing remains true: we could all use a good laugh right about now. In this episode, Association Chat host KiKi L'Italien interviews humorist, journalist, and actor Mo Rocca about the role that humor plays in times of adversity.

We talked about encyclopedias (World Book > Encyclopedia Britannica), ObitCon being better that ComicCon, and the death of dragons.

Mo is best known for his off-beat news reports and satirical commentary. He is also the host of CBS’s series The Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation. The show features stories about some of the world’s greatest inventions—past and present—and the effort it took to create them, educating and inspiring audiences with stories of creativity, hard work, and passion. Mo created and hosted the Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli, in which he learned to cook from grandparents across America. He is also a frequent panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! **Special thanks to Mike D’Andrea and Greater Talent Network (a UTA company).**

And that’s what I’m thinking about today when it comes to business and how we can better show up for ourselves and the people we serve. 02 Jun 2017Rethinking Creativity00:58:32

What if creativity took your team from good to great? What if it could transform your business? What if it could transform your life?

Monica H. Kang is an entrepreneur and innovator who is changing the way people think (and learn) about creativity.

Join us on Tuesday for this amazing live Q&A with Monica to find out about a different way to look at creativity, InnovatorsBox, and so much more.

More About Monica

Monica loves building bridges, relationships, and communities.

She believes that change is possible when more people are able to understand and integrate into different worlds simultaneously. That integration is possible with creative thinking and an open mind. For Monica, those two worlds are entrepreneurship and public policy.

Prior to InnovatorsBox®, Monica specialized in nuclear nonproliferation as contract support to the U.S. government and a non-resident Kelly Fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS. She has lived and worked abroad at the United Nations in Geneva and Chosun Newspaper in Seoul. She got her M.A. degree in Strategic Studies at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University and her B.A. at Boston University. To satisfy her love for entrepreneurship and creativity, she also sought out to be a StartingBloc Fellow and Mentor, Hive Fellow, Design Thinking in DC member, a Startup Weekend Organizer and Facilitator in DC. She is also in the process of being a certified coach and proud to be part of Coach Diversity Institute based on International Coach Federation standards.

Her love for interactive experience, safe space, and vulnerability reflects deeply in the curriculum she builds at InnovatorsBox. Her joy is to create 'aha' moments for the attendees because the best learnings comes by 'being in the moment.' She is a strong believer of 'learning by doing' and focuses on creating a safe space for deep inner search and discovery.

In her spare time, she loves to travel, read, paint, and teach Korean. You'll often see her with a chai latte and chocolate croissant at a cafe.

Inclusive Event Planning with Tracy Stuckrath
In this episode of Association Chat, we sit down with Tracy Stuckrath, host of the Eating at a Meeting podcast, to dive into the powerful role of food in event planning. Tracy shares insights on how thoughtful food choices can elevate member engagement, drive sustainability, and keep attendees safe. From crafting menus that meet dietary needs and preferences to smart ways of managing F&B budgets, Tracy offers practical advice for creating truly inclusive events.

💡 Key Takeaways:

  • How food and beverage choices can go beyond a checklist to genuinely include every attendee.
  • Financially savvy tips to meet F&B minimums, like offering non-alcoholic options that boost alertness.
  • Critical legal and ethical responsibilities under the ADA for accommodating attendees with dietary restrictions.
  • Practical serving strategies—like build-your-own stations—that ensure dietary flexibility and safety.

Controversial Accommodations

  1. Associations should be willing to refund attendees who cannot eat the food provided, even if it's included in the registration fee, potentially leading to financial losses.

  2. Providing "whole, clean foods" free from processed ingredients and excess sugar and salt may be seen as imposing dietary preferences on attendees.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

  1. United Airlines is being sued for inaccessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act, highlighting the legal risks of not accommodating dietary needs.

  2. There's often a disconnect between kitchen, sales, and front-of-house staff regarding food labeling responsibilities, potentially endangering guests with allergies.

Creating inclusive food and beverage options at events is essential for enhancing member engagement, ensuring safety, and fostering a sense of belonging by accommodating diverse dietary needs.

  • 00:00 🍽️ Tracy Stuckr emphasizes that inclusive food and beverage options at events are crucial for member engagement and belonging, as failing to accommodate dietary needs can harm the overall experience.
    • Tracy Stuckr is an F&B inclusion advocate aiming to ensure all attendees at events can enjoy meals that accommodate their dietary needs.

11 Mar 2018The Dangers of Generational Orthodoxy01:02:15

The Dangers of Generational Orthodoxy

In shaping their approach to both the present and the future, associations are all in on generational thinking. The language of generations is featured prominently in association publications and social media, frequently heard at association conferences and meetings and factored deeply into how associations organize their work, especially the work of membership recruitment.

But many of the assumptions made by generational thinking are flawed, misguided or just plain wrong, a form of emergent orthodoxy that may well do more harm than good for associations.

Join KiKi for what promises to be a provocative conversation with association contrarian Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First LLC about how you and your association can think and act beyond generational orthodoxy and learn with the unfolding under 40 future!

30 Dec 2018Rapid Prototyping and Event Design00:03:01

Sometimes I do interviews that don’t have a live audience and I try to figure out when and where to add them to what I’m already doing with the Association Chat podcast.

When I had a chance to catch up with my good friend, event designer Tahira Endean, it was as she was wrapping up a world tour of experiences, including attending The College of Extraordinary Experiences in Poland.

We talked about all kinds of things, but the theme of our conversation, the through line, was designing experience.

Here is a little piece of that discussion. I’ll be sharing more from that interview (and others from 2018 on the same topic) in the coming days.

As we went into this part of our conversation, Tahira had just started talking about the importance of rapid prototyping.

For more on this topic, watch the Amplified Growth blog in the coming days.

23 Nov 2018Why is Foresight the Future of Governing?00:58:29

Why is Foresight the Future of Governing?

For associations, the future of governing must be different than its past, and now is the moment to begin creating it. Association boards, chief staff executives and other governing contributors have a unique opportunity to work together and design a more generative integration of stewardship, governing and foresight that can strengthen board performance as well as prepare their associations, stakeholders and broader industry and professional systems to thrive in a world experiencing transformation.

In this special Association Chat, KiKi interviews Jeff De Cagna, executive advisor for Foresight First LLC and author of the new eBook, Foresight is The Future of Governing: Building Thrivable Boards, Stakeholders and Systems for the 21st Century.

(The eBook is available as a free download at http://futureofgoverningbook.com.)

Among the questions KiKi and Jeff will discuss:

  • Why is board attention the most important and finite resource every association must manage with care?
  • How can boards and chief staff executives think in a new way about what it means to govern?
  • What can associations do today to begin creating a different future of governing?

01 Dec 2021Climate Collapse: What Associations Need to Know and Do01:04:48

The recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) laid out our current global situation in stark relief and as United Nations General-Secretary António Guterres declared it is "Code Red" for humanity. We are now past midnight and if the most recent Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow is any indicator, we are justified in saying our governments have failed us and we have to assume that we are now on our own. It is now too late for sustainability, and regeneration of our economic, social and environmental systems to attempt to preserve as much life as possible is our one and only priority. Join us for an update on the current state of the climate, and a deep exploration of the topic of Transformative Adaptation which is our last and best hope to cope with what is breaking upon our world. Associations are needed more than ever to use their capacity to step into the void of leadership and we will have practical suggestions on how you can motivate yourselves, your members and their workforces to push the needle on the adaptation we need now. Guests: Rupert Read is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, a campaigner for the Green Party of England and Wales, former spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion and co-founder of the Green Activists Network, GreensCAN. He is the author of various books, including Parents for a Future - How loving our children can prevent climate collapse. Shelly Alcorn is a Principal in Alcorn Associates Management Consulting and specializes in strategy and governance for the association community. She is a frequent keynote speaker focusing on critical issues faced by organizations and society at large. Her main interests have been how to be more human in an increasingly machine-driven world and what impacts the rise of artificial intelligence will have on the workplace of the future. She is now laser-focused on our global climate emergency and the role associations need to play in the face of the sixth mass extinction. Find her on Twitter @shellyalcorn.

“You’re only two clicks away from uncovering a lie,” is the mantra Phil Riggins, founder of the Brand & Reputation Collective (the BRC) in the UK, now lives by.

Is it the mantra for the age we live in?

The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals that trust has changed profoundly in the past year—people have shifted their trust to the relationships within their control, most notably their employers.

Globally, 75 percent of people trust “my employer” to do what is right, significantly more than NGOs (57 percent), business (56 percent) and media (47 percent).

Can your organization optimize for trust? Let's find out how Gary LaBranche, Matthew D'Uva, and Nick Parker's organizations do it on this episode!

How do association leaders and communications experts avoid creating a crisis in times of “radical uncertainty” and change? I talk with association executives and a podcast producer in the Midwest about navigating these treacherous waters.

10 Sep 2018This Week in Associations (Week of 09/10/18)00:04:14

Welcome to Association Chat News! I’m your host, KiKi L’Italien, and it’s Monday, so let’s talk about this Association News flash briefing for September 10, 2018.

Things got pretty fired up in Association Chat-land last Friday. In case you missed it, let’s get you caught up-to-speed.

First, we dealt with long-seeded issues over member value.  When a consultant member of ASAE posted a blog to Collaborate, the members’-only community platform, some people thought it was more self-promotional than a community resource, and should be taken down. This triggered a discussion dredging up longtime concerns about membership value and the perceived imbalance between membership as a consultant versus association executives.

Later, things again got heated on the Association Chat Facebook Group over a post sharing ASAE’s new process for applying to speak at next year’s Great Ideas Conference.  Members of the group found the language used to describe the suggested session prototypes suspiciously similar to session topics and specialty areas authored by specific consultants throughout the industry.

As more people began to study the language in question, other session descriptions surfaced suggesting they too may have been lifted from other published articles, generating potential plagiarism concerns.

Association Chat posters also discussed concerns about the new ASAE process for identifying conference content, wondering if the process for generating content for a meeting focused on innovation was itself not innovative enough.

With this discussion still fresh and ongoing, several questions remain.

  • Are consultant members at ASAE getting a fair shake?
  • What is the line between helpful resource and content that is viewed as self-promotional?
  • What are the boundaries of ownership when it comes to ideas?
  • What are the rules for using wording found in online articles for prototypes?
  • What happens next with the ASAE members and consultant engagement?
  • What about the Great Ideas conference application process? Will that change in light of all this discussion?

Clearly, it will be interesting to follow these conversations and see what happens next.

You can see what happens next on this news and share your take on things over on the Association Chat Facebook Group.

And don’t forget! You can subscribe for the daily flash briefing and regular tips about association chat news on the AssociationChat.com website.

Check back in later this week for the next Association Chat News flash briefing.

14 Dec 2020Storytelling and Connection with Mortified Creator David Nadelberg01:04:26

What is the role storytelling plays in creating deeper relationships?

Dave Nadelberg is best known as the creator of Mortified and the cultural movement has now become a podcast, multiple books, a couple documentaries and the new Netflix series, The Mortified Guide. But it all started with a live show, which is still going strong across 20 cities around the world.

He and co-creator Neil Katcher recently created a card game called, "I Can't Believe I Did That..." which is both a party game and an exercise in empathy and hilarity. We'll talk about the power of storytelling and the ways we can use story to better connect with other people. "

Reminisce with your friends about intense pop star crushes, questionable fashion choices, and sobbing at the middle school dance with conversation prompts that spark memories of your most heartwarming, confusing, and totally OMG-worthy moments.

Celebrate all your weirdest and most wonderful childhood memories and get to know your friends like never before with this gloriously awkward and honest party game for adults 17 and up--perfect for any video chat or socially distant hangout."

17 Nov 2018What Every Leader Needs to Know about Succession Planning00:57:19

CEO succession planning is one of the most important duties of every association board of directors - and of every incumbent CEO. But few associations - even large, sophisticated ones - have developed comprehensive succession plans.

In this episode of Association Chat we explore why that is, and how to develop a succession plan with the author of a recent book on the subject and a veteran search executive who is a leader in the association community.

17 Sep 2018This Week in Associations (Week of 9/17/18)00:04:54

Summary: The American Society of Association Executives responds to criticism over their Great Ideas call for papers, what are you giving away when you sign that next speaker agreement, and what do associations still need to learn about D&I – on this week’s Association Chat News Flash Briefing.

A simple Facebook post sharing ASAE’s new process for applying to speak at next year’s Great Ideas Conference became the focus for attention last week when members of the group found the language used to describe the suggested session prototypes a little too similar to session topics and specialty areas authored by specific consultants throughout the industry.

When other session descriptions turned out to have been taken without attribution or citation from published articles in sources like Harvard Business Review and Inc, plagiarism concerns were heightened and a question of ethics arose around those concerns and other aspects of the Call For Papers were raised.

ASAE’s CEO John Graham issued a statement to the Association Chat community on Friday to address some of this concern. You can find this statement over on associationchat.com

The statement satisfied many who wanted to make sure that something was being done.

But questions linger.

Some post comments from the community ask for follow-up information from ASAE including:

  • What changes are being made to make sure the plagiarized material is found and what is the auditing process exactly?
  • Are the current speakers agreements fair to speakers and their IP?
  • Have any ASAE or CAE ethics violations occurred?
  • How will this incident impact Great Ideas?
  • What are the boundaries of ownership when it comes to ideas?

Also...

  • What can we learn from this?

Will there be more answers or will this conversation die away? Watch for more information here as the story progresses.

26 Apr 2017Association Chat and Orca Penis: My Chat with Photographer Chuck Fazio01:02:26

For this episode, I talked with the entertaining and enigmatic Chuck Fazio for the Association Chat episode, "Being Chuck Fazio - Photographer & Instigator, on Life, Art, and the Meetings Industry Fund."

A few questions we received for Chuck:

"How did you reinvent yourself (you weren't always a photographer, were you) and hone your craft? What were the top three lessons learned along the way?"

"Chuck has had and continues to have many successes in a variety of different worlds. How much of it was jumping in with both feet, and how much was from meticulous planning?"

"Professional: any lessons learned about hosting place-based education programs / study tours? Personal: if I am obsessed with taking amateur photos of food (and drinks) as a hobbyist, what's the best way to up my game?"
