26 Nov 2023Episode 4: 004 // Interview with The Zookeeper: Painting silos and doing your best00:49:43

Today I am speaking with a good friend and muralist, Joel Fergie - also known as The Zookeeper (or Aerosol Joel). Joel Fergie is a Brisbane based artist who’s large scale artworks span from inner city urban laneways to remote regional communities throughout Central Australia. His large scale murals found on water towers and grain silos aim to disassemble the routines of daily life. Through nature, his work looks to bring feelings of positivity to people in public spaces. Exploring visual metaphor, The Zookeeper’s large public works connect a wide variety of viewers to many social and cultural subjects which are often overshadowed in traditional art forms.

In this interview we talk about artists residencies, painting huge silos and water towers, making a difference in rural communities, mental health and his fear of heights.

28 Jan 2024Episode 13: 013 // The Great Instagram Experiment00:26:16

I sometimes get stuck in the 'death scroll' on Instagram. I don't like it. It doesn't make me feel good. I get frustrated when I don't have 50k followers like other artist do. Am I not as good as them? I often think that if I had 50k followers then online artworks sales would be so easy. The frustration is mainly around the fact that I have no idea how to increase my 1600 followers to 50k. I have read articles. I have listened to podcasts. I have done online courses. I have scrolled Facebook pages with all the advice. It is all overwhelming. I thought the best way to figure out 'the Insta-algorithm' is to experiment with it. I broke down the first 3 months of 2023 into two week blocks. Each fortnight I would try a different 'tactic' and below are the results - not just based on followers, but my mental health, productivity and enjoyment. Throughout this time I continued my normal, inconsistent posting of photos (occasional reels) and jibber jabber. This post walks through the outcomes from the experiment and my overall thoughts.

A little while ago I asked the public what questions they would ask a practising muralist. Most questions were around money and how to quote on mural jobs. This episode is full of all my knowledge, experience and research around pricing murals in Australia. I explain my rates and how I price my work. 25 Feb 2024Episode 17: 017 // Interview with Kate Owen: Collaboration over competition01:31:25

Today I am speaking with the vibrant and entrepreneurial Kate Owen. Kate started out painting in the storage acco a few hours a day for about a year to develop a practice. After starting to sell work she created a dedicated purpose built-studio, a sanctuary of peace and positivity in which to create. This allowed her to dedicate more time to her practice.
During this time she sold work through Art Lovers Australia, Nutmeg Home in Goondiwindi and a few other retail gift stores and pop up shops. To journal her progress she started her instagram account in late 2017 concentrating on putting her best foot forward on her social accounts. This led to Greenhouse Interiors reaching out in 2019 to invite her to be part of their team of artists which was thrilling and a major advancement for her art career. Kate has been lucky to have the opportunity to exhibit solo a number of times with the support of wonderful agents and many collectors who find joy in her work.

In this interview we talk about the mix of fashion, baking and art, Kate’s experience with Greenhouse Interiors, collaboration and licensing.

We mentioned a few projects:

17 Mar 2024Episode 20: 020 // Interview with Maggi McDonald: Building a social media brand01:16:23

Today I am speaking with the generous and colourful Maggi McDonald. Maggi is an artist & surface designer based in Sydney, Australia. After growing her family she studied design which led her to rediscover her love of painting. Nature is a constant inspiration in her work and her brightly coloured abstract gardens and landscapes are inspired by the natural beauty of her adopted country Australia, and South Africa where she grew up. Maggi was born in Cape Town and lived in London before settling in Sydney. She loves traveling and learning about world cultures and in particular the symbols and patterns used in textiles and art.

In this interview we talk about building a social media presence through consistency, creating content (and being paid for it), managing burnout and the evolution of creative careers.

24 Mar 2024Episode 21: 021 // Burnout Sucks 00:22:03

This weeks episode is a tough one – burnout. What better time to record a podcast episode about burnout, than when I am in the middle of an epic burnout? There are tears and some sniffles but I do identify the signs of burnout. I also speak about what I have done (and am currently doing) to come back from a career burnout. I understand this isn’t the usual ‘be an artist, it’s great!’ type episode. This may have a few people questioning their desire to work full time for themselves. Some others may deeply connect with this area of creative life. Please remember if you are in a similar space, you are not alone. Lifeline has a great helpline on 13 11 14. Or if you don’t feel like talking, you can text 0477 13 11 14.

07 Apr 2024Episode 23: 023 // Interview with Mandy Schöne-Salter: Painting large scale and Australian florals00:41:01

Today I am speaking with my brother from another mother: Mandy Schöne-Salter. Mandy is an artist who loves to explore different forms of creativity. You can find her diving into mural art, photography, and community art, always looking for new ways to express herself.
Mandy is a big nature lover, so you'll often see her artwork celebrating our native plants and animals. She wants to give them a voice and remind everyone of their beauty and importance.

She calls the Blue Mountains home, her artistic adventures have taken her to places like Germany, Singapore, Italy, and South Africa. She likes to go by the name MAN.De as it is much easier to remember than her other artist name.

In this interview we talk about large scale murals and painting them by yourself, inspirational Australian flora and developing your style.

Today I am speaking with Jordan Bruce from The Brightsiders. Jordan is a Brisbane mased muralist and contemporary artist. He is driven to participate and add to the visual landscape of public space. 13 Oct 2024Episode 50: 050 // Interview with Katie Wyer: Developing an artistic style, print on demand and the influence of family00:58:41

Today I am speaking with Katie Wyer. As a child, art was Katies escape from the noise of a household of eight. It was also her favourite time filler while traveling the world with her husband.  After having four children in five years, she longed to put brush to paper without the stress of toddlers’ wandering hands getting into her oil paints or mediums.

After finding the space to paint freely again, the female figure features almost exclusively in Katie’s work. Her true passion lies in connecting with her collectors through the emotions and messages that inspire her pieces, as we all learn to embrace our own beautiful mess.

In this interview we talk about balancing family and business and how Katie’s family influence her art. We speak about her thriving prints and paint sales and how she found her style.
