I met David years ago when I decided to leave Architecture to become something else, I didn't know what at the time, so I fell into a career in recruitment. 

For many, it's a stepping stone for those leaving Architecture to become something else. David's career since then has boomed as an Artist. 

Far from a side hustle after hours while working an architecture job, he has his own studio, has been featured in several exhibitions and is an artist in residence for Liberty London. Pretty cool eh?!

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the key to us working better together, with a diversity of people, in Architecture.

Research in the area of Diversity and Inclusion shows that having a mix of people in an organisation is not enough to create better outcomes, you have to have an inclusive culture too. 

Some quick stats show organisations with inclusive cultures are 8-times more likely to have overall better business outcomes, 6-times more likely to be innovative and twice as likely to meet or exceed financial targets.

You may be hearing the rumblings in the background of people discussing the Metaverse, NFTs and the blockchain. What do these all mean? 

Well just before we broke up for Christmas I thought the best way to learn is to speak to a trained Architect who is currently building and has sold NFTs of her projects to tell us all about her journey as well as insights. 

Fatemeh Monfared is an architect who graduated from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, she immediately found her passion in the NFT world and began designing the headquarters of a startup investing in yield generating gaming assets called Plei, in Decentraland. She is the co-founder of a collaborative NFT art project, called MahDelage. She is currently launching her own NFT collection while working as a freelance metaverse architect.

Midst July after hosting a room on Clubhouse I was invited to join Michael Riscica on his podcast to talk about life, the Architecture Industry and building the Architecture Social. 

Here is the description from the episode:

Some people take a long and winding route to realize that architecture is the field for them. Stephen Drew is not one of them. He always knew that he wanted to be an architect. He did temporarily entertain the idea of becoming a doctor, but his love for drawing and designing won out. Even his friends always assumed that he would become an architect. 

Stephen was passionate about graphic design and geography, which is an unusual combination. He went to the University of Westminster – that was his first time in London. He graduated into the global economic crisis and was worried about finding a job. Encouraged by a friend (who is now a famous You Tuber), he sent out a large number of CVs and ended up landing a job in a top firm as his first job.

In today’s episode, Stephen talks about his experience working in recruiting for architecture firms. He explains what architects need to understand about recruiters and also talks about the ins and outs of finding a job as an architect. 

Stephen also discusses the project that he started during the pandemic, Architecture Social. He explains what it is, how it started, and why it’s interesting to young architects. One of the analogies I often use to visualise the Architecture Industry is like trying to get into a club.

You’re an enthusiastic Architecture Graduate trying to get in the club known as the “Industry”. From the outside, you see all the happy people, however, in front of you is a grumpy bouncer holding the entrance past the rope barrier.

“No UK experience?! Back of the queue!” “NEVER used BIM?! Hmmmph, I don’t think this is the right place for you” “Under 3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE?!… Back of the line!”

“But but but… I have my portfolio with me?” “YEAH YEAH… MOVE ASIDE!”

And so you wait for hours, days, months. Watching all the people go inside. You see one of your friends go in quicker than you. How is this fair?!

It isn’t fair. And the bouncer doesn’t want to know about it. So what can you do?

Two weeks ago an independent investigation report of The Bartlett School of Architecture exposed a toxic learning and teaching culture. 

The AJ reported it as the biggest open secret in Architecture, Dezeen said its shocking and unsurprising at the same time.

In 2005, Scott Mactavish moved away from mainstream Architecture and joined an architectural recruitment company in London, recruiting Architects at all levels for the local market. This is as fate happens we met, as when I went into recruitment leaving Architecture, Scott was one of my Directors!

Join us for a rough and ready episode late into the evening, battling technology, to have a no holds barred conversation about the Architecture profession and the underbelly of the recruitment industry.

Scott studied his Masters in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture and his BA Architecture degree at Manchester University. His professional industry experience spans education, commercial and residential sectors, gained at award winning design practices including CRTKL, Austin Smith Lord and Sheppard Robson. 

Scott has also worked as a tutor at the Bartlett during his Masters. In 2005, he moved away from mainstream Architecture and joined an architectural recruitment company in London, recruiting Architects at all levels for the local market. After living in Australia for a short while and a 2 year stint as a Director for a small agency in London, Scott moved to New York in 2015 to shake things up and set up an office. He now identifies as a true New Yorker beeping in traffic and rushing around (pre-pandemic at least) with a pumpkin spiced latte in hand during the fall (aka autumn).

Scott's professional experience includes working for Clients such as BP, Royal Bank of Scotland and Manchester University. Scott also worked in Melbourne for a couple of years working as an architect for the Buchan Group, specifically working on the Star City Casino in Sydney.

Scott can advise on what employers look for in a potential candidate, noting the subtle transatlantic differences as well as advise on portfolio compilation and interview techniques. Over the years Scott's Clients have included Zaha Hadid Architects, Rogers Stirk Harbor, KPF and SOM.

John is a fully accredited RTPI planning professional with a wealth of experience in the private and public sectors across many different planning disciplines.

John Snow's career started working for a Local Authority before progressing into the private sector where he gained a detailed knowledge of larger and more complex planning schemes including minerals, waste and land management. Many years ago, I decided to roll up my sleeves to learn Revit. I frantically looked for something that was easy and accessible for me to learn, turns out LinkedIn Learning worked best for me where they had a course led by the instructor Shaun 'SCB' Bryant.

I may not be a model student, however, I may be a better host (you can be the judge!). This extensive skill-set has been honed whilst working as a consultant, trainer, CAD manager and CAD user with a varied background as a CAD/BIM and CAFM consultant and trainer, in addition to time spent as a CAD manager and some time spent in sales, pre-sales and business development.

I am a published online [in]structor for LinkedIn Learning (previously Lynda.com) with numerous online courses in the library on AutoCAD and Revit. I also produce bespoke training courses and manuals for clients.

I'm an Autodesk Expert Elite and was previously a Director on the Board of AUGI, with numerous articles published in world-class publications such as Cadalyst and AUGIworld. I am also a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Certiport, developing Autodesk Certification for both AutoCAD and Revit Architecture, as well as being an SME for graphics card manufacturer, AMD. I am also the founder and author of the reputable CAD blog, Not Just CAD!, which now has it's own LinkedIn newsletter and will be going live with a LinkedIn Live video podcast very soon!

It's that time of year at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) where the candidate nominations in the current elections have been announced and hustings are in place. 

For the few engaged RIBA members, this is an important moment that could invoke change. Equally, there are many members who perhaps have grown tired and jaded with the institute as of late and elections feel pretty pointless. 

Why do I say that? A bold claim? Well, the last election the turnout was just 13.2 percent. And to be honest, I can understand why - I've never felt compelled to vote historically before.

Two established and respected members of the RIBA council and board as well as a promising outsider called Muyiwa Oki.

Did you know that there is a WORLD event for Digital Construction Skills every year and a team from the UK competes against other countries from around the world on different challenges like modelling a project in BIM against the clock?! 

Me neither! I've been living under a digital construction rock, luckily my next guest Michael McGuire who is a lecturer at New College Lanarkshire has opened me to something I did not know existed.
