It's taken a while for SciFi to get a foot-hold as a serious genre. Yet even now some cinematic SciFi still gets panned and under appreciated. Angela and Jen want to challenge that idea. So they have each picked an underrated Sci fi movie that got an unfair shake. Check out their second look at Passengers (2016) and Æon Flux (2005). Æon Flux is available to watch on Netflix and Passengers will be broadcast on FX starting May 3, 2019.

12 Jul 2015Anomaly Supplemental | Guards! Guards! (Terry Pratchett's Discworld)01:02:23

Over four years of podcasting together, and I finally got KC to read a Discworld book - in fact, it was kind of her idea!  After a quick catchup on life, we give a general introduction to the Discworld and then a short summary of Guards! Guards! (Discworld #8, Watch #1), before sounding our spoiler alert and diving a little deeper.

We talk about Pratchett's writing style (including the undercurrent of anger that is often noted by readers), dialogue, and humor; gender representation in the Watch; our favorite characters, scenes, and quotes; and the sticky subject of cover art.  KC sprinkles in some of her dream casting for a non-existent film adaptation, I share some thoughts about cosplaying a character from a book, we discuss the possible TV series adaptation, and we read part of a review from Anomaly staffer Michele.

10:25 - Main Topic Begins
23:35 - Spoiler Alert!

23 Jul 2012Anomaly Supplemental: Into the Woods01:04:43

In this episode of Anomaly Supplemental, Kasey and Sue discuss the 1987 Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical “Into the Woods”, which brings together classic fairy tale characters with exception storytelling and music. Though the show has had many incarnations, the podcast focuses on the original Broadway production, which was filmed in 1989 to be broadcast on PBS in 1991, and subsequently released on DVD (it is available for purchase and Netflix streaming). We discuss the story (spoilers!), music, lyrics, writing, characters, and themes as well as the resurgence of fairy tales in popular media, why theater fans care so much about casting, and how much we adore Stephen Sondheim. Oh, and it's possible that we sing... just listen all the way to the end. Visit the show notes for additional information and links.

Last year at Austin Comic Con, Jen had the opportunity to hear Sean Astin speak. He is one of the most friendly actors the Anomalies have had the chance to see and they wanted to share that experience with you. This episode includes a little "house keeping" information regarding Anomaly at the begining (no more than 2 minutes), and a recording of the Sean Astin panel from the 2014 Wizard World Austin Comic Con (show notes). In this holiday episode, KC and Sue discuss Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" in its many incarnations, from the original novella to the Muppets.  We discuss the historical context of the work, why it's still so popular, how it influenced what we now think of as the "traditional" Christmas celebration, casting and direction choices, our favorite film and stage adaptions, and even Jacob Marley's motivation in death... among other things.

Next time:  In January, we will be sharing our favorite geeky discoveries of 2012.  If you've discovered something over the last year that you'd like to tell us about, send us an email at moregirlygeekz@gmail.com, or visit us on Facebook or Twitter.

27 Jan 2015Anomaly | Return of the King Discussion01:21:38

In this episode of Anomaly, Jen and Angela talk about The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (show notes). SPOILER ALERT precious. 26 Oct 2017Star Trek Discovery: Lethe (S1 E6) Review | Anomaly Mini-skirt Cast00:44:38

Anomaly sometimes records what we call a "mini-skirt" 'cast. This is a podcast we publish outside of our regular schedule and is usually a little shorter than a full show. And you can expect several in the next few weeks discussing Start Trek Discovery!

We need to talk about the obvious. One of the hardest things about Star Trek Discovery as a devoted fan of Star Trek is balancing your desire for some new stories from your favorite world and the fact that SciFi as a genre has come a long way in 50 years so of course, they have to change it up. I guess it comes down to - What do you enjoy about Star Trek or any SciFi, and is Discovery presenting a good story?

08 Aug 2014Anomaly| Guardians of The Galaxy Review01:00:52

"I am Groot!"  In this edition of Anomaly, Angela and I review Guardians of The Galaxy. In short, the casting was great! The dialogue was clever, the comedy was non-stop awesome! And, as Gen Xers who both lived by the "awesome mix tape", as teenagers and young women, we both LOVED the soundtrack. It's definitely one to buy. We highly recommend you see this movie... now! 10 Mar 2012Anomaly: Virgin Galactic Interview

In this episode of Anomaly, Angela and Jen interviewed Will Pomerantz, the Vice President of Special Projects for Virgin Galactic. This episode was a result of a discussion they had during a review of Spaceballs, a film that neither Angela or Jen are particularly fond of. The commentary soon turned into a conversation about the last shuttle mission and the downsizing of NASA. If you wish to listen to that episode, you can find it along many other episodes in our ArchiveThey requested this interview in an attempt to inject a little optimism for the future of space travel into, not only themselves, but their listeners as well. 27 Oct 2011Anomaly Supplemental: Little Shop of Horrors 25th Anniversary00:43:30

"A nerdish florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed."

In the first installment of  "Mastergeek Theater", KC and Sue cover Little Shop of Horrors in its many incarnations.  Although we touch briefly on the 1960 film and theatrical productions, we focus mainly on the 1986 movie musical.  Little Shop is celebrating it's 25th anniversary this year, and features fantastic music, and puppetry from veterans of the Jim Henson Creature Shop, and wonderful direction by Frank Oz.  Musicals with puppets?  As if you expected anything else from us.

03 Mar 2017Anomaly Turns 10 : What is an Anomaly and is it Contagious? 01:08:41

25 Apr 2012Anomaly Supplemental: A Very Potter Musical00:42:36

Pigfarts, Pigfarts, here we come! Sarah, KC, and Sue got together to talk about the YouTube sensation "A Very Potter Musical." The plot is basically a parody mash-up of Harry Potter books 4-7, but that's not what's important. We talk about our favorite characters, songs, one-liners, and running gags. And somehow take a brief detour to the much more serious topic of digital distribution of media (including theater, television, and music).

*Please note: This episode carried an "explicit" tag due to a few instance of mild to moderate profanity in some of the quotes and/or clips from the production.

19 May 2017I am Groot: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review00:26:13

A "mini-skirt" review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first five minutes are spoiler free; Jen and Angela give their overall impressions about the acting, the story, and the music before playing the Anomaly Spoiler Red Alert and talking in-depth about the latest Marvel film.

Discussed in this Review

  • The background of Pom Klementieff, the actress who played Mantis
  • Sean Gunn, who played who played Karolin Obfonteri
  • Elizabeth Debicki who played Ayesha
  • Whether or not the story spent enough time explaining...Ego (spoiler free show notes, folks) ;)
  • Is Baby Groot an offspring/offshoot or is he THE Groot? Inquiring minds and all that.

13 Feb 2012Anomaly Supplemental: Doctor Who Chat00:50:28

The following episode is a chat between Sarah, Kasey, and Sue after the recording of last month's "Face Off" episode.  The goal was to plan the future podcast schedule, but the conversation turned to "Doctor Who."

* This is a spontaneous and organic conversation.  It has no been heavily edited, so you may here more vocal ticks and pauses than usual.

* Opinions of chracters, actors, and episodes were expressed candidly.  Feedback is always welcome, whether you agree or disagree, but please don't be mean if you disagree.

* SPOILERS to follow, mostly for series 1-3, but a few for 4-6, and also for "Firefly" and "Serenity".

* Finally, the male voice that chimes in from time to time is Andrew, Sarah's husband.

Thanks for listening, and enjoy!

05 Oct 2011Anomaly: Jessica Mills Interview

In this special Anomaly interview, Sue from Anomaly Supplemental chats with actress, writer, web series creator and internet superstar Jessica Mills about her web series Awkward EmbracesJessica is an anomaly and loves all the geeky things anomalies love.  She talks about what it was like growing up a geek girl and discusses her thoughts on women of Sci-Fi, fantasy and fandom.

Her web series Awkward Embraces follows Jessica's dating misadventures.  Her non-geek gal pals don't get her Star Trek references, but they love her despite her batleth analogies... and perhaps because of that they often try to "help her" by setting her up with men they deem to be "suitable".  Please visit the show notes to learn more. We also have a recap video coming in the next week or two that will feature photos and video of all the experiences we talked about in this report, as well as commentary from me and Angela describing everything that took place. 24 Jul 2013Anomaly Supplemental: The Chocolate Factory Debate01:06:03

A few months ago, Sue and KC asked listeners to vote on their next topic and the winner was 1971's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate" starring Gene Wilder versus 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starring Johnny Depp. For the sake of title length, we have called this episode The Chocolate Factory Debate, but as Sue mentions at the beginning, this discussion may not be much of a "debate" after all. Topics range from the original book by Roald Dahl, the performances of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, the musical aspects of both films, the controversial Fizzy Lifting drink scene, and more. And so, as one Mr. Wonka said to his group of visitors: "Are we ready? Yes. Good. In we go!"

29 Jul 2014Your Moment of Who: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (Seventh Doctor)00:21:46

You know the drill by now.  The end of July means it's time that KC and I talk about the Seventh Doctor, by way of "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy."  After some preliminary research, we put this serial out there as our frontrunner for viewing, and received no other suggestions.  But our uncontested winner turned out to be one of our favorite serials (featuring one of our favorite Doctors) in this project.

As usual, the conversation takes some diversions, into things like "Zoobilee Zoo" and cosplay.

Additionally, we discuss what we have seen and heard so far regarding the upcoming Series 8, featuring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor.  Neither of us has read the leaked scripts, but we do speculate, so if you want to remain completely unspoiled regarding the next series, that discussion begins around 16:30.  We don't talk about anything else, so you can just skip the rest.

14 Jun 2014Anomaly | Star Trek: DS9: "The Visitor"00:52:57

In this special  Father's Day episode, Jen and Angela talk about their dads and discuss a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode entitled: The Visitor. The story wonderfully illustrates the bond between father and child and the sacrifices they often make for one another. Show Notes Here »

The majority of this chat is spoiler free, but at the moment the spoilers begin a warning is played. If you haven't seen this particular Star Trek episode, we hope that you'll pause our discussion, watch The Visitor and then return to this installment of Anomaly to finish it.

01 Feb 2014Your Moment of Who: An Unearthly Child (First Doctor)00:20:17

In this episode of Your Moment of Who, KC and I begin our Classic Who series. This month - because it's still January - we watched the very first Doctor Who serial ever - "An Unearthly Child" - with the very first Doctor ever, William Hartnell. The serial includes 4 episodes: "An Unearthly Child," "The Cave of Skulls," "The Forest of Fear," and "The Firemaker."

We talk a bit about the difference in style from 1963 to now, how the character of the Doctor has changed (or not changed), and come to the conclusion that Susan is a little bit insane. Among other things, of course.

Visit the show notes for links, trailers and more>>

Hi, I'm Jen and this is Anomaly's first podcast episode about Outlander. I recently sat down with my sister and my mom to discuss the time traveling series written by Diana Gabaldon. We also talked about the first two episodes of the new television show that Gabaldon and Ronald D. Moore created, based on her novels. Alas, I don't have the Starz Channel, but my mom graciously offered to record them for me—it's good to have connections. A couple of weeks ago, I had a free weekend, so I  traveled seventy-five miles to watch them with her and my younger sister. It was our "girls' night". We shared a couple of  bottles of wine and some laughs as we talked late into the evening about why we enjoyed the series. It's a very good excuse to get together more often and I think we're going to make it a habit.

02 Oct 2016Anomaly Supplemental | Jessica Jones: Dealing with Your Demons (Dragon Con 2016)01:05:03

That's right, it's another panel from Dragon Con!  Earlier in the week, Sue put up a poll in the Anomaly Facebook Group which included all of her recorded panels from Dragon Con 2016.  Well, nearly everyone wanted to hear the Jessica Jones panel from the American Sci-Fi & Fantasy Media Track.  This was one of the last panels of the entire convention, on Monday afternoon, and it was a packed house and a great discussion.

Jessica Jones: Dealing with Your Demons

Season Review. Based on the Alias comic book series, little-known hero Jessica Jones impacts the small screen with serious human issues - and a villain who can literally blow your mind.

Our chat on “Jose Chung’s from Outer Space”, was originally released around 2008. In it we discussed the comical X-Files episode, which may just be the best ever.

Stick around after the credits for this edition of Anomaly to hear the first half of the episode, where we talked about the last few episodes of Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica.

To find more classic Anomaly episodes that are not currently available in our feed,  head over to our Archive to find episodes dating all the way back to 2007.

Thanks for listening, we'll be back next week with a discussion about the women of Marvel and "Captain Marvel".
