Show me a better naked cyborg assassin, OR show me a more visually striking anime film. You can't because GHOST IN THE SHELL dominates in both categories. We get right into it in this episode. The tech in this film is a large topic of conversation, as is the not-quite-nudity. Despite a few qualms it's clear that even a harsh critic can appreciate the brilliance of this movie. Now that we've all seen it, we can finally watch the live-action remake starring Scarlett Johansson (We hear it's fantastic.)

Makoto fucking Shinkai everybody. We HAD to cover Weathering With You after gushing so hard over Your Name. These anime films have to stand against each other to some extent but how they stack up is a point of contention in Team Shmanime. One of us missed what is possibly the most hype element of the whole film, and we may be the first to discover our boy Shinkai's deep connection to Canadian rock legends The Barenaked Ladies.

Kill La Kill is another controversial anime... because nudity... the entire show is about nudity... much of which surrounds an underage girl. That being said, it's clever, endearing, and they never go FULL nudity... just RIGHT to the edge of it. It's a wild ride and we had a LOT to say about it. We kept our parts covered (for the ratings) but you might wanna strip down nude when you watch at home so you don't feel left out... otherwise, by the end you SURELY will.

Erased is a bigtime sleeper. The subject matter is HEAVY to say the least but it's nestled in a mystery with a subtle sci-fi mechanism. We try REALLY hard not to rationalize serial killers and their MO's, and discuss a rare, effective approach to the time travel paradox. PLUS... did Jordy somehow find his waifu in this show?? We managed to have fun despite the gauntlet of emotions this put us through. For our first foray into the Mecha genre of anime we HAD to go with Mobile Suit Gundam - we cover the three classic films in one shot. We finally dive into Studio Ghibli – an anime titan - with Spirited Away. Here we go again! Season 2 of Dragonball Z. It's a shame we couldn't do 2 and 3 in one episode, but Jordy has made it clear he can only withstand so much torture (and if it wasn't clear... it is now having been the one to write this.). In this season, said torture takes the form of the Ginyu Force, Friesa, drawn out battles with power-ups, and Bulma just generally doing some bullshit. We have a good time digging holes in DBZ and filling them in like we're training to join the Ginyu Force.

I don't want to talk about this show anymore... Monster Musume is... well it's fucked up. It is a little funny how absurd it is, but it pushes the boundaries of comfort for MOST of us. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is another film whose name is known to even the most fringe anime fans (this means Jordy). This is largely because of the work of Mamoru Hosoda the films director. We spend a lot of time debating the effectiveness of the time travel mechanism(s?) specific to this film, and we go TOO DEEP about time travel in general. It was fun as hell but I don't think we solved any paradoxes... unless a magical walnut could actually do the trick.

Another Mamoru Hosoda film this week... It's Wolf Children. Not sure it counts as a classic but it's definitely on brand for him. At it's core, this is the story of a single mom and her two children trying to find their way in a world they don't belong to. BUT... at it's other core, it's about a woman who sleeps with a wolf and has to deal with the repercussions of that decision. Dragonball Z part 3. This arc is arguably a turning point for the show. It has more Frieza, more Goku, more fights, and a first look at a real Super Saiyan. Of course DBZ is never without it's goofy, slapstick humour whether intentional or not... Jay calls it "levity". We laugh our way through this season of this highly revered and influential show and we will continue to do so as we drag this series out... but that's on brand for Dragonball Z.

Tokyo Revengers is a powerhouse. There's a lot about this show that doesn't scream 'Anime', as if the writers of Sons of Anarchy were hired. The characters have great depth and growth, the drama is thick and mysterious, and the fight scenes are realistically choreographed (aside from some magic kicks and excessive, consecutive steel pipes to the head). Everything about this show is endearing and we had a great time getting into it... and I think we did pretty good at holding back about the theory of time travel.

Today we are going deep on Made in Abyss! This show is unique if nothing else. It's like a bizarro world Ghibli movie – chibi and whimsical, yet dark and deeply, deeply disturbing. Disturbing even further because all this trauma is experienced by very young children. Mikey is vibing hard (no surprises here), Jordy is able to get past the trauma for the sake of whimsy, and Jay has a downright hard time. When we disagree, we laugh a lot and have a great time. In this episode we go to the depths and come back a little deformed.

We are four seasons deep on Dragonball Z and I can't believe we aren't even halfway yet. This season we get Trunks, Androids, Vegeta and Bulma as an item and a lot more of the same-same that Dragonball Z has to offer. Considering how little we get of Android 18 in this season, we spend a lot of time talking about the impact she had on horny young people (named Mikey). Some mercy was afforded to Jordy and skipped the filler episodes, but we couldn't pass up discussing Goku and Piccolo's driving test ordeal. The world finally got a little taste of Shmanime this past weekend as we unleashed ourselves on Anime North! Our very first in-person event and for some of us, our very first anime convention ever! It was a hot, sweaty day but we were too busy having fun to really notice! Meeting so many awesome cosplayers and narrowly avoiding a Tokyo Manji Gang brawl are just a few of the highlights. We can't wait for the next one!
Akira is another film that transcends it's genre. It's one of the founding fathers of cyberpunk and largely responsible for bringing Anime into the western world. We knew this would be a gush fest when we picked it and couldn't have been more stoked to get into it. What a treat to dissect the artistry in all aspects of this legendary film. It's influence is immeasurable as is the number of bike slides used in homage to the OG.

Asobi Asobase is pure comedy. These three girls are a perfect trifecta of personalities for their age, and they move through punchlines at incredible speeds. The vignette format makes it feel like a series of comic strips, and the rotating cast of oddball characters keeps the delivery fresh. At times it's a lot, but even a cold hearted individual (Jordy) will find a place to laugh... And we all know how Team Shmanime likes to laugh! If an alien implant killer butt ray sounds cool PLEASE seek help... but also watch the show and watch us talk about it.

With Fate Zero we scratch the surface of yet another goliath anime franchise. The jury is still out whether this was the right place to start, but it's where we started nonetheless. We briefly touch on the other titles and how they intertwine in a sort of multi-multiverse with crossovers. Depending on who you are it can get sort of confusing and it doesn't help that several main characters look almost identical. Lets hope that other Fate titles don't also have pits of magic worms that suck the essence out of a child's genitals.

An obscure powerhouse for this weeks Anime Shmanime - Otomo Katsuhiro's Memories Anthology! It's three short films with undeniably different vibes though each one feels like a perfect manifestation of a singular vision. The styles of Perfect Blue and Akira are perfectly blended in Magnetic Rose, a solid comedy with a social commentary twist in Stink Bomb, and whatever the hell Cannon Fodder is. This was a great watch and an even better topic of conversation!

This week we are covering Bubble and it's exactly what you'd expect. It's Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter for our first ever "Freestyle Episode"! Same Shmanime hi-jinks except we prepared less! We watched this short OVA immediately before hopping into the studio to get into it. All the head kicks, nerve rips, and action packed fights were as fresh in our minds as they could be. We laughed a lot and made some very obvious and not so obvious comparisons to other beloved stories from our pasts (It's Initial D meets Cool Runnings).

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 – The Movie is one we've been dying to cover. The moment it hit streaming services we prioritized it (some of us were unable to catch it in theaters). Spoiler alert: It's a unanimous hit though we still find ways to disagree! A lot of comparisons are made (Disney's Planes, Voldemort, Eddie Brock, and Friedrich Nietzsche to name a few) and some are divisive to say the least. Overall this movie is a fun, wild ride with top notch animation, fight scenes, characters, series tie-ins, and a great story. If you've watched Jujutsu Kaisen this is a must watch... and if you haven't, you're making mistakes.

Record of Lodoss War is a high fantasy anime. It's dungeons and dragons meets Lord of the Rings with Oppais. There are a lot of characters and plot points slammed into 13 episodes and we did our best to cover it all. We are trudging ever slowly towards the finish of our Dragonball Z series! I (Jordy) could not have predicted how long this process would feel. As we power through this season we close off another major arc with The Cell Games. Some of our heroes take a step back to make room for a new young class of champion (much like the classic 90's teen comedy Saved By The Bell). In this episode we cover Golden Boy! The six episode OVA is incredibly easy to digest. It can be argued that this is the most self aware anime there ever was. It explores the genre through trope after trope while somehow still remaining exciting, smart, funny, and horny as hell. We even get a look behind the scenes in the last episode as the entire OVA wraps up into a neat little package. Much like the main character, this series has layers to unfold. We somehow managed to keep our clothes on, but we took great joy in peeling these layers off one by one like a woman undressing before making love to her motorcycle.

For a season that can be considered transitional or a set-up for the next, Dragonball Z Season 7 has a lot of shit going on. We get two tournaments one for the world and one for the otherworld. There are also a pile of new characters to meet: Videl, Goten, Pikkon, Multiple Kai's, and even a new big bad for next season Majin Buu (not to mention bibidi and babidi). It's all very confusing but we laugh our way through it. We are so close to the end, but in true Dragonball fashion we are taking our time getting there.

It's part buddy comedy, part family sitcom, and part military drama. War In The Pocket delivers on characters, emotion, action, political and social commentary, and comedy. To kick off a new year we are covering Chainsaw Man! Quite possibly the most anticipated anime we've covered to date. This show has been in the forefront of anime culture for much longer than it's been airing and some say the hype somewhat altered the watching experience. Regardless it's an undisputed modern classic up there with Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, and Jujutsu Kaisen. While no title is perfect (we don't give 10's) this is a well crafted show with a concept that is undeniably cool, characters that you love instantly (Pochita!), and feature film worthy action. We like it almost as much as Denji likes boobs.

It's the legend Hayao Miyazaki's birthday this month so we're covering two of his most revered films starting with Princess Mononoke. It's a masterpiece and arguably transcends it's origin as an anime. This movie is filled with beautiful artistry and storytelling, deep characters and themes, epic action, and the perfect amount of whimsy. Well fuck. Grave of the Fireflies absolutely ruined us. It's sad and now we are sad and you are probably also sad. Despite the heavy subject matter, we managed to have a good time and laugh a little. The film is an undisputed masterpiece as beautiful as it is emotional. Studio Ghibli definitely took an opportunity to present something singular and unique in their catalog with this story of Japan in WW2 and they succeeded - it's a must watch film. Belle is a tale as old as time... or at least as old as 1991 when Disney released Beauty and the Beast. This film is an undisputed tribute to the Disney classic even if one of us didn't realize until half-way through, and one of us thinks this version is better! Like Disney, Mamoru Hosoda places music front and center in his rendition of the story but he takes it online for a modern twist. While this is a re-imagining of the story, we still get all of the classic scenes and characters including of course Belle, a Beast, Gaston, and even AI versions of Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts and Chip, and the beloved Dog Ottoman. There's a lot to unpack in this film including child abuse and a dude who just loves canoeing but we get through it and not without a few sing-a-longs!

Sword of the Stranger is a samurai movie. It's exactly what you'd expect from any samurai movie. In camp Shmanime, we are divided on whether it's a particularly good one or not. There is a fine line between an homage to a genre, and being derivative and we spend a lot of time debating where this film lands. We also talk about cute dogs and how we love them. We all agreed that much of the art displayed in this film is fantastic and does a lot to make Sword of the Stranger a unique film in a saturated genre. As always, we laugh and get mad at each other, but mostly we are vibing.

FLCL is a landmark in the anime world. It serves as a launching point for well loved Studio Trigger titles that came after including one we loved in camp Shmanime – Kill La Kill. This show is a roller coaster that is all over the map, but it is clearly a free expression of the unbound imagination and artistry of it's creators. It's a show that doesn't take itself seriously which allows the viewer to take every wild idea at face value. It's clunky and janky in a lot of ways, but it's too fun not to enjoy. Drive your Vespa to your friends house and smoke them in the head with your Rickenbacker bass and then watch FLCL and then watch us chat about it!

You heard us joke about it time and time again... Mikey and Jordy finally did it - we wrote an Isekai anime off the top of our heads. Somehow this exercise really brought out our childhood brains. It's as if we tapped into that youthful energy of every kid experiencing anime for the first time. Was this a good idea? That remains to be seen, but it was fun, it's funny, and although we missed his presence deeply, we got to make Jay the main character in our action packed, toilet themed adventure. Don't come at us telling us we need professional help, we already know, but DO let us know if you have a script that needs punching up. We are clearly professionals.

Welcome back to the Boat House! Jay is still away so today Mikey and Jordy are having some fun with Waifus VS Wifeys! It's a classic Waifu Wars episode with a twist: since Jordy is new to the world of weeb, he's brought to the table 5 non-animated characters to compete with Mikey's otherworldly anime waifus! We're back in full force for an episode on Oshi No Ko! WE DID IT! We've made it to the end of Dragonball Z! It took us longer than we expected and for some (Jordy) it felt like even longer. If you've come along on this journey with us thank you and congratulations. It's a massive undertaking to consume this series in it's entirety without nostalgia behind the wheel... but this is a dead horse that we've kicked a few times already.
