23 Jan 2022Alan Corcoran: Embracing Freedom00:36:23
On a weekend when Ireland tasted freedom for the first time in a long time, today’s guest seems particularly appropriate. Alan Corcoran knows a thing or two about embracing the opportunities that life presents you with even when it seems like there is only darkness ahead. While studying abroad Alan received devastating news from home. It’s a moment we all dread as emigrants. Ordered to stay and finish his exams rather than return to support his family, Alan hatched a plan. 35 marathons in 35 consecutive days. For an experienced runner it would seem daft to take on such a challenge. For someone like Alan, with no marathon experience whatsoever, it seemed like self-destruction. And yet he did it and raised thousands for his chosen charity. He didn’t stop there. Here for the first time he talks to Jarlath about his journey, the book he has written and self-published about the experience and film he made about the next challenge - swimming the length of Ireland. If you’re at all nervous about getting out there and engaging with your new freedom. Listen to this chat.    To support his kickstarter to fund the final phase of the film’s creation visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1616467730/unsinkable-a-500-kilometre-irish-sea-swim-for-charity.   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 600 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad

28 Jun 2023Sonia’s Tips On How To Run Your Faster Parkrun - Irishman Running Abroad (With Special Guest Vinny Mulvey)00:28:18

The spirit of Parkrun is not centred around beating your fastest time but if there’s a wall there, you may as well try and jump over it some time. You can sit on it, arrange to meet friends at the wall, chew the fat and have fun but occasionally it’s ok to jump it. With the help of the Queen of Irish athletics you can instantly take minutes off your time. You’re not going to believe how glaringly obvious and ingenious her tips are. Profound wisdom that is hard won from her years training and winning all around the world. Later in the show elite physical therapist and coach Vinny Mulvey joins me to discuss the best way to prepare your week to run fast on a Saturday morning and how to make a Rocky trilogy in a month of Parkruns. You’ll be standing with both fists in the air at the end of this episode.

Jarlath is also on tour right now. He will be doing his latest standup show in Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Armagh, Galway, Cork, Birmingham, London and Tralee to why not grab a ticket while you can. All the other dates have fully sold out! https://linktr.ee/IrishmanAbroad

22 May 2021Rory O'Neill: 6 Years On From Yes00:30:00

Rory O’Neill aka Panti Bliss sat down with Jarlath this week to talk about Ireland six years on form that momentus day when the nation said yes to marriage equality. In this wide ranging discussion Jarlath asks Rory about the rise of a certain kind of insensitivity in the country and whether it is linked to a minority who feel wronged by the changes that have occurred in recent years. To hear the full conversation including Rory speaking for the first time about the housing crisis, the challenges and stress of running his own pub and why he doesn’t necessarily agree with all the criticism Ireland takes, join up on Patreon. Become one of the many people who feel that Irishman Abroad is worth something and want it to continue….

Panti is Ireland’s foremost “gender discombobulist”, “accidental activist”, best selling author, electrifying performer and driver of change. In his mother's words, Rory O'Neill has “always been his own man.” And woman. And national treasure.

24 Apr 2021Carl Austin: The Impact Of Race On Film00:30:00

On what will go down as a momentous week in Black History with the conviction of Derek Chauvin, Ireland-based screenwriter Carl Austin joined Jarlath for a harrowing conversation about growing up in South Central Los Angeles. They discuss the influence the depiction of black communities in film has had on racism globally and much more.

In this crossover episode from our forthcoming 3rd series of Men Behaving Better in which racism is under the spotlight, Carl explains how he didn't meet a white person his own age until he was a teenager. We hear why he was reluctant to drive through Bel Air with his wife in recent years and Carl also explains how racism caused him to have two identities growing up. Carl looks back on a shocking incident when a routine traffic stop resulted in him being held at gunpoint with a police officer holding him down with a knee on his back. This is a truly powerful conversation that you simply don't want to miss.

14 Nov 2021Steve Garrigan: The Internal Battle00:34:40
This week, Jarlath is joined by Kodaline frontman Steve Garrigan for a one of a kind conversation about his life and career. Steve speaks frankly about the painful shyness that dominated his early years and how his parents tried to help him. Later Jarlath asks about the devastating effects of tasting fame in your Leaving Cert year and how he wrote Kodaline's hit single High Hopes at a time when he felt like he had hit rock bottom.   From the hilarious accounts of his earliest roles as a Pokemon and making an absolute fool of himself in front of Tony Hawk (without whom Kodaline would not exist) as well as his sobering account of the terrifying panic attack he experienced at the age of 20 and much more, this is a fascinating conversation with one of Ireland's top musical talents.   Steve's book High Hopes is available in all good bookstores and the list of cognitive distortions that is referenced in the interview can be found here https://positivepsychology.com/cognitive-distortions/   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 500 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad

25 Jan 2021Kobe Bryant Biographer Roland Lazenby - Patreon Exclusive Episode (Sample)00:10:00

It is now one year since the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash on their way to a youth basketball game. In this episode Kobe’s friend and author of 'Kobe Bryant: Showboat', Roland Lazenby, makes his return to speak to Jarlath and pay tribute to the NBA legend.

We hear of Roland’s heartbreak as how he watched him both attempt to destroy, the Jordan comparison and the touching letter Kobe wrote to his daughter.

Jarlath quizzes Roland on the big difference between Kobe and modern stars. They find common ground on a Roy Keane comparison as Roland explains how Kobe's maniacal work ethic saw him wear his body and teammates  down.

09 Dec 2020Irishman Running Abroad with Sonia O'Sullivan: “What Is 'Chi-Running'? And How Do We Use It To Improve Our Running Form"01:02:19
This week’s slightly delayed episode looks at the most deceptively important aspect of running. Subtle problems and changes to a runner’s form can mean the difference between long term injury and PBs. Sonia introduces Jarlath TJ the concept of “chi-running”. Created by Danny Dreyer after suffering a long term injury, Sonia explains that her introduction to the concepts came from another Irish running legend Catriona McKiernan. After examining drills that can activate the essential muscle groups to improve anyone’s running dynamic, we look at why many of us feel trapped with the form we have.    Attempting to change the way we run takes time and one key thing. Sonia explains what that thing is and why even she struggles with it. Jarlath puts your questions to Sonia including one about running while pregnant, is a cheat day essential and what can we do to overcome the cold.  This episode has it all including an update on our next event. There’s even a discussion of the value of potato picking as a youngster.   Join us on https://www.strava.com/clubs/irishmanrunningabroad to get even more access and info.   To gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 400 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad.   Our charity partner is jigsawonline.ie. Marion McKeone examines the impact of Joe Rogan and other alternative news sources in a week when his interview with CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta drew massive attention. Who is Joe Rogan and why do so many people look up to him? Marion looks at his origins and the choir he appears to preach to. What does the attempt by Texas to prevent vaccine mandates mean and will it produce any change in national policy? Will NBA superstars and other athletes who refuse the vaccine be viewed as martyrs for their cause or spoiled brats unwilling to do everything necessary to win. 06 Jul 2022Irishman Running Abroad - Week 3 - Sonia’s Half Marathon Challenge00:30:58

Before handing out our half marathon training plan for the week, Coach Sonia O'Sullivan gives us a look inside a record breaking night for Union Athletics Club in Oregon. Jessica Hull's attempt to claim another Australian record has parallels with the journey of our squad to the Antrim Coast Half Marathon. If you climb the mountain too fast or skip certain steps, you can easily plummet from where you are. Our team captains Aisling and Neil jump on the live line to talk about how they found week two and ask Sonia about how to cope with doubt and nutrition. Meanwhile in our weekly trip around Strava we find one listener, Elaine De Courcy who shocked her self-with a break through 5k time. In the extended Patreon (www.returnofthecraic.compatreon.com/irishmanabroad) episode you can hear more about this week's 5 x 1 mile repeats workout and how best to do it, the feedback of our listeners around the world and Sonia's most recent bizarre sign spotting expedition in the woods near Portland.

21 Jan 2022President Biden’s Year 1 Report Card - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone (Mini Pod)00:14:33
Marion hauls Joe in for his end of year assessment. Will he get to go on the school tour or will his failure in the areas of messaging and immigration be too much? All jokes aside, we cast a critical eye over the last 12 months of Biden/Harris, their biggest achievements and inability to get their party in line. Why do Americans believe their economic inflation has nothing to do with the rest of the world? And will 700 pages of Trump White House records that have just been released to the committee investigating January 6th move the needle at all? Marion McKeone explains it all and gives us her honest assessment of the new kid in the Oval Office.   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 600 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad   Supplementary research provided by John Meagher.   If you would like a story discussed, get in touch, the Irishman Abroad Liveline is now open. 25 Oct 2024Last Chance For Harris & Trump - Irishman In America ( Taster Pod)00:09:31

Unprecedented is a word that gets thrown around too much in relation to this election but when the military suddenly start getting involved in flagging one of the candidates as a fascist, that fits the bill. John Kelly’s comments and various pieces in the New York Times  this week would have sunk a candidate in any other era. Today it seems meaningless to Republicans who don’t mind supporting a self confessed fan of Hitler. Marion McKeone examines the latest developments form the campaign trail including Tucker Carlson’s spanking fantasy, Elon Musk’s election interference, threats against Jack Smith and the political scientist Matt McWilliams who predicted America’s gravitational pull towards an authoritarian leader back in 2015.

17 Dec 2021Is Pursuing Mark Meadows Really Worth It? (Plus Marion‘s Best Books Of The Year) - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone (Mini Pod)00:15:59
On Tuesday the House of Representatives voted to hold ex-president Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, in contempt of Congress and refer him to the US Department of Justice for prosecution after his refusal to testify to the select committee investigating the Capitol riot. This week Marion McKeone explains why she believes he played a critical role in the January 6th riot and why history needs to accurately record what exactly took place in the corridors of power on that fateful day. Jarlath wonders if America is even paying attention and if they are, what can this investigation even hope to do when Trump supporters and haters are so entrenched.    Marion's books of the year are revealed and we also get a brief catch-up on what has been happening in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial and bit more of the lighter side with Marion’s favourite conspiracy theory of the year.   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 500 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad   Supplementary research provided by John Meagher.   If you would like a story discussed, get in touch, the Irishman Abroad Liveline is now open. 29 Apr 2022Elon, Amber & Don (The War On Truth & Who Gets Heard) Irishman In America With Marion McKeone00:33:00
From the Ukraine to Virginia, the battle over which version of the truth is more correct has raged this week while Elon Musk learns why even he doesn’t want absolute free speech. I interrupt Marion’s well earned holiday in Ireland to get her take on what just happened with Twitter, that interview with Piers Morgan, the US policy change in Ukraine, history making droughts in California and the Johnny Depp she used to know. 31 Jan 2021C.K. McDonnell: A Man With One Of Those Ideas00:30:00

This week, Caimh McDonnell, author of the best-selling Dublin Trilogy, the McGarry Stateside books and Stranger Times joined Jarlath for a conversation about how rejection paced the way for his success.

Caimh opens up about his journey to self-publishing success including the doors that were slammed for the most ridiculous of reasons.

We hear how the motivation to move to London struck him when he realised how fast his life was passing away in Dublin without very much happening. Jarlath finds out about the “not in front of people I know” route into standup, the successful TV writing career he built and how he chose to end it.

The friendship with Gary Delaney that changed everything for him, the buzz of getting his work optioned for TV, the exciting bidding war which ensued and much more, this is a thoroughly heart-warming conversation with one of Ireland's true creative writing talents.

31 Jul 2020Colm Meaney (From The Patreon Archive): Episode 35600:30:00

Colm Meaney is a national treasure. This week Jarlath sits down with him for a one of a kind conversation about his early life, work and struggles. For the first time, we hear his experience of being Irish in the UK during the Troubles (31:00), getting his big break in the 1980s in America (38:00) and why juggling Star Trek with features such as The Van, The Snapper and The Commitments worked for him (51:00).

From joining Sinn Féin as an 'anti-establishment' 13 year old (12:00), to and how Margaret Thatcher once 'fucked the whole thing up' with regards to funding and the arts (30:00), the Hollywood culture of telling people what they want to hear (50:00), the series of incredibly unfortunate events that killed the prospects of one of his proudest acting projects (56:00) and much more, this is a fascinating and rare conversation with a true Irish acting legend.

To hear about the chaotic nature of filming Alpha Papa alongside Steve Coogan, Colm's thoughts on how the film/TV industry is changing, the art of finding the essence of a character, Con Air and more become a patron of An Irishman Abroad for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad.

10 Mar 2023Tucker’s Rewrite & Marion’s CPAC Review - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone00:34:14

Marion gives her review of this year's CPAC. She witnesses first had the declaration of “war on transgender people”.  With the aim to “eradicate transgenderism” many deligates and speakers won the crowd at the event by parroting anti-trans and anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric while Kari Lake promised legislation to prevent chemical castration.

Tucker Carlson’s gave rewriting the story of January 6th's Capitol Hill riots a decent swing this week. 23 May 2023The 1987 Mindset - Building Mental Toughness | Irishman Running Abroad00:32:22

In 1987 at the Cork City Sports meet, a seventeen year old Sonia O’Sullivan ran a time for 3000 metres that would have qualified her for the 1988 Olympics. It was the race that put her on the map. We go back to that summer’s evening when the legend in the making took a bus from Cobh to Cork to stomp her opposition into the ground. Injury adversity would strike soon after but it was this taste of success that drove her through the long weeks of rehab that would follow. How exaclty was the mindset of athletes in 1987 different today? What can it teach us about resilience and toughness? Is talking about problems the right answer to all problems or can we make them bigger by expanding the headspace they occupy?

The Irishman Running Abroad Podcast is Ireland’s number 1 running podcast  and each week examines a different aspect of training. This week we catch up with the GOAT as she travels to Washington to visit her daughter Sophie - an NCAA athlete on the rise herself. The “grand” forests and hills, the lunch box of champions and a trip around the Strava parishes for Sonia’s runners of the week make up the rest of this jam packed episode of Ireland’s favourite running podcast.

28 Feb 2021Mark Horgan On The Making Of "Where Is George Gibney?"00:30:00

Mark Horgan joins Jarlath for an in depth discussion about the production and impact of his global hit podcast series, “Where Is George Gibney?”. We hear of Mark’s first awareness of the case and how eve the was confused as to whether Gibney was imprisoned for the initial sexual abuse charges against him. Jarlath digs into the exact judicial loophole that allowed Gibney to leave the country and evade. We get an inside look into Mark’s initial hesitancy to pursue the project out of concern for the victims, the overarching aim to tell their stories and his own views on how we sometimes try to explain away pure evil in others.

The victims and their courage is a central focus of the discussion and Jarlath asks Mark about the significance of Gary O’Toole in the process. Later in the conversation we hear about the moment Mark confronted Gibney face to face and how Florida gun laws had him and Ciaran Cassidy on edge at all times. Now that Mark has returned to his old stomping ground with the Second Captains team and the dust has somewhat settled, there is time to reflect on what just happened. What does a new Garda investigation into Gibney mean? What will Mark do next and would ever consider leaving the team and doing it by himself?

18 Aug 2022Irishman In America - Liz Loses, Weisselberg Pleads & 4 Theories On Why he Kept Those Boxes (Part 1)00:35:15

Were Liz Channey's reelection hopes doomed on January 13, 2021, when a week after the insurrection at the Capitol, she and nine other House Republicans voted to impeach former President Donald Trump? This week they paid price at the polls. Like having to drive to Dundalk twice in one day, is this a time loop we will all be stuck in for the next two years or could Sarah Palin by the answer. Marion McKeone surveys the landscape of the Primaries and calls out the crazies. There was more shock and horror on Thursday when Allen Weisselberg, who for decades was one of Donald Trump's most trusted and loyal employees as chief financial officer of the Trump family business, pleaded guilty on Thursday to 15 counts ranging from grand larceny to tax fraud to falsifying business records. He is the latest person close to the 45th president to plead guilty or be convicted at trial of of a felony. Marion examines the fine print of his deal and spots a problem.

Why did the Orange fella keep those boxes of confidential documents? I have four theories and ask Marion to debunk them one by one. A US magistrate judge started the process of potentially releasing some information from the affidavit that the Justice Department used to obtain a search warrant for former President Donald Trump's Florida residence. Trump says he wants it released in full. Why? Is this normal? Marion has the answers and a great recommendation for you to read this weekend.

08 Jul 2022Irishman In America - News Roundup & The Highland Park Aftermath00:35:20
Marion reflects on a July 4th unlike any she can remember. With many Americans experiencing complete shock and disillusionment with the senseless mass shooting in Highland Park, our friend and US correspondent for the Sunday Business Post examines the details that are emerging around this awful event and what we know about the shooter. Is there a new type of juvenile extremist phenomenon growing under the noses of authorities? Could assault rifles ever be banned again or are President Biden's hands completely tied on yet another issue. Democrats are no longer hiding the fatigue with the sitting President. The events of the last few weeks and the action of the Supreme Court on issues of gun control and abortion rights have somehow failed to galvanise support for the Democrats. Why is this? Marion tries to answer this question and looks to the next round of January 6th hearings, the incarnation of a US basketball star in Russia and the bizarre case in a West Virginia county ravaged by opioid addiction where a federal judged ruled in favour of three major U.S. drug distributors that stood accused of causing the health crisis by distributing 81 million pills over eight years. And finally Marion recommends what's good this weekend and how she was almost confused for Drake when collecting her herbal medicine. We want to hear from you. If you’re hoping to run a marathon one day getting your fuelling and flexibility just right is essential. And yet each and every week runners of all levels neglect these areas of their training. With less than one hundred days to Jarlath’s first ever marathon, the London City Marathon, Ireland’s best ever athlete Sonia O’Sullivan helps our host understand the essentials with the help of Vinny Mulvey. Vinny has been providing plans for both Sonia and Jarlath as they ramp up the miles on the road to London. Together they look back on the track session, Parkrun and long run from the past week. 02 Mar 2021Irishman Running Abroad with Sonia O'Sullivan: “Balance: The Most Overlooked Aspect Of Running"01:01:27
It’s remarkable that it has taken us 6 months to get to the issue of balance in running given it is perhaps the most essential component of biomechanics and the training itself. Sonia leads Jarlath through the basic theory of teaching your feet to react to changes in your body position. There’s a look at some of the more unusual training exercises to improve the reaction of our proprioceptors and how to pronounce proprioceptors. There’s the new book club section with the announcement of our first book choice, “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight. Sonia then broadens the discussion of balance into our wider training and explains to Jarlath why running slowly needs to be the biggest part of his week.   Join our running event on strava.com/clubs/irishmanrunningabroad and help raise vitally needed funds for our chosen charity partner jigsaw.ie and all the work they do to support young people in Ireland.     To gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 400 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad.   Our charity partner is jigsawonline.ie. 09 Nov 2021Irishman Running Abroad with Sonia O‘Sullivan: ”The Women In Sport Episode”00:34:03
This week Jarlath talks to Sonia about all the challenges facing women in sport and how we can keep young girls involved. Together they reflect on how few and far between the options once were for young girls interested in pursuing sport in a serious way in Ireland as recently as the early 90s. Has enough changed? Sonia gives her opinion what needs to happen for change to take place for this generation. We also get an update on her elite training group at Nike HQ in Oregon. This week German athletics hero Konstanze Klosterhalfen invited Sonia to a yoga class on a rest day. We get her take on an activity she has resisted for some time.   Join our running event on strava.com/clubs/irishmanrunningabroad and help raise vitally needed funds for our chosen charity partner jigsaw.ie and all the work they do to support young people in Ireland. 20 May 2022Irishman In America - Window Into The Past With Marion McKeone01:16:55

After an unbroken run of episodes spanning nearly 2 years Marion McKeone was unavailable to record An Irishman In America this week due to personal reasons. So we went into the archives and found Jarlath's original interview with her from on An Irishman Abroad (Originally released November 2019). In a rare and personal conversation, Marion opens up about her early life, Dublin in the 1980s, her urge to leave the country and one particularly hilarious tale of going AWOL from a summer job as the world's least qualified tennis instructor following a prank involving the Soviet flag. It's fascinating to look back and hear Marion mourn the loss of carefree America after 9/11 and how at the time of recording she believed there was every chance Donald Trump would be re-elected. It's also a time capsule from the final months before the pandemic and a rare insight into this brilliant Irish journalist, broadcaster and writer. Normal service will of course resume next week but for now, sit back and enjoy this gem from the vault.

07 Apr 2023Trump’s Jenga Tower & Can The Courts Impact His Rhetoric? - Irishman In America (Part1)00:33:21

Are the public already too tired to cope with Donald Trump’s indictment? Business Post Washington Correspondent and the power house behind this podcast, Marion McKeone discusses all 34 of the charges Trump is facing. Marion tells us what it was like on the ground as George Santos and Marjorie Taylor Green protested outside the court.

We discuss Trump’s diminished appearance, rare details from inside the court house and Trump’s attitude to it all. We also chat about the other impending cases headed Trump’s way, how this could affect his run for the Republican Presidential candidacy and how his MAGA base could be affected.

In the Patreon portion of the show, the we discuss Marjorie Taylor Green’s 60 Minutes interview or as Marion brands it ‘one of the saddest days in journalism’ she’s ever seen. We get into the dangers of journalists not rebutting false claims.

New York Congresswoman Alexandria OCasio Cortez’s calls for justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached and Marion breaks down why these calls have come to fruition. We discuss Robert F Kennedy’s Jr’s run for the Democratic bid or as Marion brands him the “crank and loser” candidate. To wrap the pod up, Marion gives a dose of positive news as Wisconsin elected a Democratic Supreme Court judge. Will this really make a difference? Marion thinks so.

28 May 2022Monthly Books Show With Aaron Rogan & John Connell00:37:26

John Connell and Aaron Rogan join me this week to talk about their new books, The Stream Of Everything & Punters: How Paddy Power Bet Billions And Changed Gambling Forever. These two are masters of their crafts. It just so happens those crafts occupy very different places on the literary spectrum. I stumbled across Aaron's book when preparing for the Paddy Power interview that we released last weekend. It's a one of a kind look into the origin of the betting giant and the man who walked away from unimaginable wealth because his conscience wouldn't let him stay. John Connell's book, tells the story of his journey as he attempts to canoe down his local river during lockdown and let all of his regrets float out to sea. Both books suck you in from the first page. Both books couldn't be more different. Both books are my recommendations for this month. In the extended cut I get to ask them both about the work that went into creating these books, the reaction they have received and we even get an exclusive extract reading from John.

16 Jan 2022Dr. Alan Desmond Can Change Your Life In 28 Days00:37:28
For years Dr Alan Desmond has been telling people, ‘We can transform our health and revolutionise our quality of life by simply eating more plants.’ It was only while working on the frontline of the pandemic that he found the time, while isolating from his family to pen the book that would make him a best selling author and allow him to completely articulate his plant based design for changing our lives.   As rates of chronic disease continue to rise, ‘What should we eat?’ has become one of the most important questions of the 21st century. Dr Alan Desmond has made it his business to cut through the diet confusion to explain how we can all unlock the power of a healthy gut and optimise our overall well-being by simply putting more plants on our plate. Here for the first time on Irishman Abroad, Jarlath gets the chance to quiz the good doctor on whether all the hype around chomping more veg is really true. Having picked up the book Jarlath has taken the dive into Alan’s 80 completely plant-based recipes and the essential step-by-step guide to discovering the true power of a plant-based diet for himself. Like almost everyone he still has reservations but in this fun and wide ranging chat, Dr Alan explains it all including the data for runners and athletes. The impact of meat production on the environment and future pandemics. There’s even more over on Patreon.   By day Dr Alan Desmond treats patients with a broad range of recent-onset and long-standing problems affecting their stomach and bowel. He has particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), heartburn, reflux oesophagitis, Barrett’s oesophagus and patients with irritable bowel syndrome and other functional disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract.   Alan graduated from the School of Medicine of University College Cork in Ireland in 2001. He went on to complete his specialist training in Ireland and at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.  He relocated to Devon in June of 2012. He regularly speaks at conferences and events across the globe.   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 600 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad

31 Jul 2020Imelda May (From The Patreon Archive): Episode 29600:30:00

Imelda May is, without a doubt, one of the most requested guests in the series to date. This week, Jarlath and Imelda finally had the chance to sit down and chat face to face.

In fascinating detail, Imelda discusses the addictive nature of losing oneself on stage (9:00), her time working every job that she could find when she first moved over to London (14:00) and her clever marketing plan to grow her name while touring with Jools Holland (Patreon Full Length Version only).

From her incredible story about Bono's endless support for her (37:00) to her frank discussion on why artists should 'keep away from talent shows' (42:00), how you have to be totally committed to make it as an artist (30:00) and much more, this is a thoroughly heartfelt conversation with one of Ireland's true musical greats.

15 Nov 2020Can A Book Pave A New Path To Peace? - Colum McCann00:30:00

Critically acclaimed Irish author Colum McCann gives us a rare insight into his latest novel and the power of storytelling. When you listen to this powerful conversation, you will not be surprised to hear that Colum has won the Rooney Prize, the Novel of the Year Award, the National Book Award and International Dublin Literary Award.

His Man Booker Prize longlisted book Apeirogon has lead critics to ask if a book can bring about peace in Israel. Jarlath digs deep into the experience that lead Colum to writing this game changing work. We how his time spent working as a wilderness educator for young offenders Texas changed his path and his recollection of living in New York during 9/11. As Professor of Creative Writing in the Master of Fine Arts program at Hunter College, New York his views on the art of teaching are truly inspiring for anyone trying to spark the interest of young students.  In its essence, this is a conversation about the power of listening and telling one's story and it could not have come at a better time.

13 Aug 2021Cuomo Is Gone (Or Is He?) - Irishman In America Scandals Series With Marion McKeone (Trailer)00:11:45
It took a week of protests, media pressure and one Marion McKeone podcast to tip Andrew Cuomo over the edge and into resignation. This week Marion and Jarlath examine what exactly happened to force this supposed street fighter to wave the white flag. His half-hearted apology gets an autopsy and Jarlath asks if Cuomo is positioning himself as the Democrat Trumpish outsider candidate. Does he still have fans? Unsurprisingly, yes. Marion looks at the state of Biden’s Covid vaccine rollout and the LiveLine returns with Gareth Murphy getting in touch with a scandal that many may have missed from 1863.  To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 500 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad

18 Feb 2022The Fine Print (The Prince’s Awkward Settlement, Trump Gets Dumped By Mazars & More) - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone (Mini Pod)00:14:20
Has Prince Andrew settled this case and avoided any further embarrassment or has he just agreed not to be humiliated at his mother’s big party? Today Marion McKeone casts her expert legal eye over the settlement nobody saw coming. Just weeks ago we heard how intent Virginia Giuffre was on making Andrew sweat in public on the stand. Surely there is more to this settlement than meets the eye. This tamped down statement can’t be worth £12 million. Is it the outcome other victims were hoping for?   Dumped on Valentines Day, in public, by your accountant. Now that is rough. Donald didn’t take it well and his rage spewed into a statement that he wanted written in CAPS. But before you flush it down the toilet of the White House residence, surely Mazars are culpable for some of the book-keeping tomfoolery they are attempting to call out? Marion explains it all and takes us to the Ukraine to examine the developments of the past week. 04 Oct 2024How Do You Swing A State - Irishman In America00:32:25

Marion asks what will move needle in the minds of American swing voters? The VP Debate definitely didn’t do it. Jack Smith damning 165 page filing on January 6th doesn’t seem to have done it? Could the impact of Israel’s attacks on Iran make the difference? If that impact is at the gas pump you can bet Americans will notice. This week on the podcast we look back at an intense week on the campaign trail. You can find the full episode and weekly episode of this podcast on www.patreon.com/irishmanabraod - let Marion be your guide for the final 30 days of the campaign and beyond.

13 Mar 2022Mia Döring: Surving The Unsurvivable00:34:02
Any Girl is a ferociously honest, intensely tender and utterly unforgettable book that is as thought-provoking as it is timely. It is written by our guest today Mia Döring. Mia was exploited by an older man while in her teens. She explains to Jarlath how this exploitation carved her path into the sex trade. In her incredibly moving memoir we hear how she eventually left the trade and what life was like while within it. As you can imagine, this episode covers some adult themes of abuse, sex and trauma.   Mia and Jarlath discuss a wide range of topics including the startling statistic that 1 in 15 Irish men pay for sexual access. Mia Döring asks, “Why are we not talking about the men? Why are they not talking? We do not hear from them. They don’t ‘come out’. They don’t create associations or campaigns for punter’s rights. If punting is the legitimate and harmless hobby they claim it to be, why not?” If punting is the legitimate and harmless hobby they claim it to be, why not?”   Any Girl: A Memoir of Sexual Exploitation and Recovery’ by Mia Döring is published by Hachette Ireland (€14.99)   If you have been affected by the issues raised in this podcast, contact the Rape Crisis Centre’s 24-hour Helpline at 1800 77 8888 or the local rape crisis services in your area.   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 600 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad

23 Jun 2023America’s Unanswerable Questions With Marion McKeone - Irishman In America00:31:46

Will The Rock be a future candidate for President of The United States? Will Trump be convicted and go to jail over the missing files? And who killed Tupac? On this week’s podcast, Marion tackles America’s most un-answerable questions, from politics to celebrities to celebrities entering politics and back again.

Who will be the next celebrity to take American politics by storm? Marion parses out who could be the next Trump. With former comedian Zelensky running the show in war torn Ukraine and America’s history with celebrity presidents, Marion discusses future stars turned global politicians.

What does a competent Government mean for public opinion in the States? Marion discusses how a capable Government is equated with dullness as Biden has led a stable term in the Oval Office. In the aftermath of Trump’s disastrous tenure, Marion feels Biden’s stable government is not viewed as it probably deserves.

After Trump’s indictment will we see prison time for the former President? Marion gives a couple of the most jaw dropping theories doing the rounds on what could happen if he is convicted, including the possibility of a pardon by the current Democratic president!

What issues should Americans be up in arms about? Should Americans seek to abolish the Electoral College and the Senate? Marion breaks down which states are shafted in representation by the current electoral system.

Why do American’s have such low sympathy for Biden’s embattled son Hunter?

—- Over on Patreon — in the XL edition of the show you can hear:

Is there ever a possibility of assault rifles being taken off the streets in America. Marion brings new hope as California’s Governor Gavin Newsom works to pass a new amendment that could alter the iconic second amendment. What do the Democratic Governor’s ideas involve and could they come to fruition?

What is the state of abortion law after the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe V Wade? Marion discusses the patchwork quilt of injustice that has taken over the US as women are suffering in restrictive states.  However, even conservative states are fighting back with Kansas holding a referendum on abortion rights that could bring hope in other places in the future.

Are American’s worried about AI? More importantly, should they be? Marion and Jarlath chat about AI use in America and what it means for workers across multiple sectors as it has the potential to affect the job security of many, from truck drivers to screen writers. Marion also looks at how it could affect disinformation campaigns in the upcoming election.

Finally, they address the all important mystery of who shot Tupac Shakur on the Vegas strip in 1996? Marion presents an interesting theory as Jarlath discusses the idea of reparations for slavery in America.
