15 Apr 2022Episode 84. A History of Dart Frog Locales in the Hobby with Devin Edmonds01:13:26

As the dart frog hobby evolved over the past 50 years, many different species and locales came and went along with it.  However, for the longest time, we haven't had a clear picture of which species made it into the hobby, when they made it into the hobby and how they made it into the hobby. That is - up until now.

Tonight I am joined once again by Devin Edmonds and we discuss his new paper published in the Herpetological Review  titled, "Poison Frogs Traded and Maintained by US Private Breeders."  Devin made a painstaking effort to track the origins of hundreds of different dart frog species and locales, and in this week's episode we discuss his findings. If you've ever wanted to hear an origin story of species in the hobby - this is the episode you've been waiting for!

27 May 2022Episode 90. Understanding Spindly Leg Syndrome with Kathleen Higgins01:02:20

Spindly Leg Syndrome is a condition that negatively effects developing tadpoles and causes them to develop thin "spindly" legs during metamorphosis.  The condition is ultimately fatal and as such it can be a difficult challenge for hobbyists and conservationists looking to breed dendrobatid frogs to overcome. Many have theorized why spindly leg occurs, but there hasn't been much in the way of peer reviewed literature until now.

To shed light on the subject, I am joined tonight by Kathleen Higgins. Kathleen recently conducted extensive studies in Panama to discover the causes of Spindly Leg Syndrome in captive Andinobates geminisae with surprising results.  Kathleen co-authored a paper describing her findings and we discuss all of it in this week's epsiode.

08 Jul 2022Episode 96. The History of Dendrobates Azureus in the Dart Frog Hobby with Nick Zoppa01:14:34

When we think about dart frogs, we almost always  immediately picture the beautifully blue Dendrobates tinctorius "azureus." Once thought to be its own species (research is still ongoing), Azureus has been the focus of attention for both beginner and advanced hobbyists for half a century. However, there hasn't been a thorough account of how Azureus came into zoos and private collections up until now. My guest this week is Nick Zoppa, and Nick has taken the time to fully research the history and timeline of Azureus in the hobby. He has written an article about how the locale arrived into collections around the world, and another detailing and demystifying the different lineages existing today.

30 Sep 2022Episode 107. What to do when you lose a frog.00:42:55

We've all been there at some point. We've worked hard to acquire a healthy frog, toad, or salamander, we've done our homework and set it up properly, but unfortunately it passes away. The experience can be difficult and frustrating to say the least.  However, if we want to improve our methods and grow as hobbyists, it's important that we learn as much as we can from the experience.

There are many reasons why an an amphibian passes away while in our care. Although we may not always find a cause we still need to examine our methods. In this episode we run down a check list of questions we need to ask ourselves and we consider a number of possibilities that may have resulted in a loss.

23 Nov 2022Episode 115. Amphibian Pathology and Parasitology with Dr. Robert "Oz" Ossiboff01:38:10

As amphibian medicine continues to advance, so has our understanding of what constitutes proper captive husbandry. practices.  Both hobbyists and conservationists place tremendous value in the lives of their frogs and both will often (if not always) look for answers when death or illness present in their collections. Since many amphibian illnesses cannot be detected by the naked eye, in these cases we must rely on a pathologist to help us find out the answers.

This week I am honored to be joined by Dr. Robert "Oz" Ossiboff. Oz has the unique distinction of being one of the few veterinary pathologists who specializes in amphibians here in the US, and in this episode we discuss how pathology and parasitology are essential parts of proper husbandry protocols. We talk about how and why necropsies and fecal exams are performed, how parasites and diseases can be detected and diagnosed under a microscope, and we discuss some real life case studies. Oz is also an accomplished dart frog hobbyist, and we discuss his approach to keeping from a vet's perspective.

06 Jan 2023Tesoros de Colombia Part 1. "The Past" with Ivan Lozano01:25:54

One of the greatest concerns facing wild amphibians today is poaching. Poaching and Illegal trade not only put amphibian populations at risk from over collection, they also jeopardize conservation efforts by competing with legal trade.  Seized shipments of illegal frogs often have nowhere to go,  finding responsible sustainable sources to supply hobbyists is a challenge, and captive reintroduction programs are often few and far between.

Every problem must have a solution though... -And the solution to these problems is Tesoros de Colombia, and Ivan Lozano.

Ivan has dedicated decades of his life towards eliminating the illegal trade by creating a sustainable source of captive bred amphibians for both reintroduction into the wild and to supply ethical hobbyists. He has spearheaded efforts in Colombia aimed at eliminating poaching by providing legal exports, and by giving back to the ecosystems that these animals thrive in through various initiatives including La Reserva Biopark.

This three part series focuses on the past, present and future of Tesoros de Colombia. In this week's episode we talk about the past- how and why Tesoros created- with Ivan Lozano. We discuss the creation of La Riserva Biopark, the state of the Colombian amphibian trade in the early days, and why there was such a great need for Tesoros de Colombia to begin.

19 May 2023Episode 135. Advocating for the Right to Keep Responsibly, with Tony Wigley01:50:11

Keeping amphibians and reptiles enriches the lives of millions of people world-wide.  According to the National Institute of Health, "Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood." (1)

In addition, it should also be noted that private hobbyists and other entities maintaining captive amphibians have contributed substantially to conservation and preservation efforts. The AZA Amphibian Husbandry Guide states that, "There are many reasons to keep amphibians in captivity including for purposes of exhibition, education, conservation, preservation, and for hobby and personal interests." (2)

However, despite all the benefits to both keepers and the species they work with, there are entities out there who aim to damage and destroy the world of responsible and ethical keeping . Full out bans, white lists, and harsh legislation are becoming more and more common nowadays.  As responsible keepers, we have an obligation to educate others and to advocate for ourselves before it’s too late.

This week I am joined by Tony Wigley of ResponsibleReptileKeeping.org  Tony's mission with the RRK is to advocate for the reptile and amphibian hobbies by educating others and to dispel the numerous myths that perpetuate within the anti reptile and amphibian hobby narratives. The RRK works as a media platform that includes a podcast, youtube videos, and a newsletter that is accessible to enthusiasts at all levels. It’s my pleasure to sit down with Tony this week and discuss many of the serious issues facing herpeteculture today.

26 May 2023Episode 136. The Poison Frog Paradox - with Karl Loeffler- Henry01:09:33

Aposematism and chemical defense are common traits among many species of amphibian. California Newts, Dart frogs, and Fire Bellied Toads are prime examples.  But, if we look at the three, we notice that not all are colored equally despite all being toxic. California newts and some species of dart frog for example,  both produce lethal toxins; but why is one brightly colored all over and why is one brightly colored on its underside only?  Is aposematism a better adaptation than camouflage and if so why do some species exhibit both traits?

And to confuse matters further, how do we make sense of the following poison frog paradox? -"A frog is poisonous and bad to eat. It's evolved bright warning colors so that predators will avoid it.  But wait! In order for the predator to learn that the frog is poisonous doesn't it have to eat one first anyway?" How does that make any sense!

Well, if you feel confused by the poison frog paradox, this is the episode for you! This week I am joined by Dr. Karl Loeffler-Henry and we discuss how he was able to solve this paradox by studying how aposematism evolved and what the tradeoffs are.  We discuss his paper, "Evolutionary transitions from camouflage to aposematism. Hidden signals play a pivotal role," and we talk about how brightly colored organisms survive long enough to warn predators when they are easier to predate than their cryptic peers. Dr. Karl Loeffler-Henry goes on to describe how high degrees of aposematism facilitate speciation, which may partially explain why there are so many different locales of dart frogs.

Note*  in the substrate portion of this episode I mistakenly referred to Zoo Med as the brand  that makes jungle mix. It is actually made by Zilla.

Beginner Pacman Frog Checklist:

1. Escape proof enclosure - 2-5 gallons for small froglets, 10 - 20 for subadults and small males 20-30 plus for large adult females

2. Substrate that holds moisture, drains well and is deep enough for frog to burrow (Zilla jungle mix / plantation soil types)

3. Water dish with dechlorinated water for soaking

4. Supplemental Heat / lighting - maintain daytime temp of 78-85 evening drop to low 70s. Use a timer for 12 hour on 12 hour off day / night cycle ( try to provide a gradient with a warm side and a cool side in the enclosure

5. Temp gun / digitial thermometer to monitor tank temps

6. Some sort of hide

7.  If opting for a naturalistic tank ,pothos and springtails make for a simple beginner setup (always wash plants off well first)

8. Feeders and proper supplements to dust them with

9. If providing UVB use a quality low intensity bulb

10. Handle only if necessary. Moist nitrile gloves come in handy- otherwise clean, moist oil / lotion free hands only and as little as possible!

11.  Time! remember frogs can live up to 15 years.

07 Jul 2023Episode 140. Billy Sveen Creepers Herpeteculture01:49:26

It’s always important to properly research the husbandry needs of a species before we take on its care as a keeper. An understanding of  the animal’s natural history, it’s captive care needs, behavior, and longevity, is vital if we are to succeed.

Equally important though, (yet not always accepted)  is the value of continuing our education and accepting that we are always developing as keepers.

This week I am joined by Billy Sveen of Creepers Herpeteculture and we discuss his approach to proper husbandry research and continuing education in the hobby. We talk about starting out with dart frogs, how to pace ourselves as our collections grow, the value that scientific papers have in our husbandry decisions, and how to look at herpeteculture  as a long term process.

We also discuss Billy’s artwork, pen and ink, and the old  Dover Book scientific illustrations that inspired us both.

29 Sep 2023Episode 148. Establishing a Clean Amphibian Trade with Dr. Matt Gray01:35:44

As the amphibian hobby continues to grow, it is crucial that we advocate for the health and wellbeing of our beloved frogs, toads and salamanders. We must also be mindful of the health and wellbeing of the industry that provides us the privilege of working with these amazing creatures. And when it comes to setting policies that affect the industry (particularly with regard to amphibian disease), input from hobbyists and breeders is a vital component.

This week I am joined by Dr. Matt Gray and we discuss his ongoing project with the Pet Advocacy Network.  The aim of the project  is to identify how socioeconomic decisions made by stakeholders drive pathogen dynamics in a wildlife trade network and use this information to identify disease mitigation strategies that are economically viable and minimize spillover risk (i.e., pathogen transmission from captive to wild populations). This project is partnering with the U.S. wildlife trade industry and government stakeholders, and will facilitate discussions among them to identify strategies that promote clean trade, while considering socioeconomic impacts on the industry.

The project uses a combination of socioeconomic surveys, facilitated discussions, pathogen surveillance, and controlled experiments to build a series of predictive models that can be used to guide policy.
