In today’s podcast, we’re going to break down what values are and why they’re so important to your salon’s culture. 

For your core values to really matter, it goes far beyond a simple list of guiding principles. Ideally, they need to authentically define how you and your team members (1) operate, (2) behave, and (3) interact on a day-to-day basis. They should be supported by accountability mechanisms so they can be easily integrated into performance management systems or your monthly one-on-ones.

About ready to give up your career and become a permanent beach bum? Read through these tips to help you combat burnout before you throw in the towel.

GET OUT OF THE SALON: 

First and foremost, take a break. Take a day, a weekend, or if you can, a week off. Sometimes that’s all it takes to reinvigorate you.

CHANGE IT UP: 

Add new services, redo your retail area, or change up your background music. A “new” environment can help to break the boredom of your routine.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW: 

Go to a tradeshow. If there isn’t a show coming up, then take a class. If you can’t take a class, what about meeting up with other stylists in your area to share ideas? Maybe visit other top salons to see what they do that you don’t. You just might find some inspiration to take back to your business.

BECOME A MENTOR: 

Use your experience for good. Find a newbie and teach her everything you know. You might find that teaching others helps you see things in a whole new light.

CHANGE ROLES: 

Maybe it IS time for you to hand in your stylist hat, but for an even bigger and better one. Have you ever considered becoming an educator or an instructor, or even opening up your own salon? Maybe it’s time to take the next step in your career.

Write your goals down…goals should be 1. Specific 2. Measurable 3. Have a Deadline

What are the most important numbers to be looking at?

1.     Increasing your Average Ticket.

2.     Number of Clients

3.     Number of Client Visits per Year

4.     Average Retail Ticket

5.     Client Retention

If you want more, you must do more.

When building relationships with clients, one of the most important and difficult things to do is handle complaints properly. Here are tips to help turn a client’s negative experience into a positive one.

Be in the Moment

Let the client know you can sense they are disappointed with how the design is looking. Ask them to offer feedback to what is specifically the problem area. Handling the problem in the moment will increase the probability of satisfaction

Practice Reflective Listening

After listening carefully to the client’s feedback, restate back to them what you heard to allow them a chance to make corrections to your listening skills. Be prepared to ask question to clarify any areas that have a lack of clarity.

Position the Feedback

Express appreciation for the client’s honesty, which will now allow you to meet their needs. Offer the option of making changes if possible, during the existing service or make plans for future satisfaction in the form of a return service, gift card or rescheduling with a different designer

Making changes to gain client satisfaction provides a learning experience that will help build your professional listening and flexing skills.

You know who we’re talking about…she’s the one who never has anything nice to say about anyone else and is constantly complaining. Don’t let her bad vibe crush your zen attitude.

Don’t succumb to the power of gossip. 

It’s a rare person who isn’t at all interested in gossip, but next time one of your coworkers is telling all the dirty little secrets about another salon employee just walk away. It’s one thing to want to know celebrity dirt, but it’s another to partake in a dish session about what someone “heard” about someone else in the salon. It’s just bad form to perpetuate rumors and the easiest way to get that gossip to stop spreading rumors is to ignore her. She’s not going to keep talking if there’s nobody interested in her story.

Don’t EVER talk about clients in front of other clients. Period.

End of story. As soon as a client hears you talking about another client, she will wonder if you do the same with her once she leaves the salon. It’s unprofessional. If your coworker is doing it, don’t engage her in the conversation.

Be like a duck and let it roll right off your back. 

If you have a complainer on your hands, just ignore it. You don’t need to snap at the person, just walk away.

Deal with your dirty laundry in the laundry room. 

If you absolutely must say something to another coworker, don’t ever do it in front of clients. Ask to speak to the offending person in the back room or later when the salon is closed. Only then should you bring up your concerns with how the person is conducting herself.

If it isn’t something you can work out between yourselves, get the manager or owner involved. 

Sometimes it takes a third party to solve the problem. Or if it’s more serious and you suspect your coworker of something worse than idle gossip, you definitely want someone with authority to intervene.

PITCH IN. 

Train your staff and front desk to be aware when another stylist is having a hard time keeping up, for whatever the reason. Make it common practice to help out. Coworkers should always be prepared to sweep up hair, shampoo a guest, or even finish a coworker’s customer by blowdrying.

 FESS UP. 

Always admit you’re running late. When your customer arrives, tell her you’re behind schedule and that you’re terribly sorry. Tell her how much longer you are going to be; this allows the client to run an extra errand or grab a bite to eat.

 DOLE OUT. 

Give something back to the client by way of apology for making her wait. Consider giving a discount, a coupon for a discount on a new service offered, or a small retail product. 

 CALM DOWN. 

Never panic, skip steps, or rush the service however much you might be tempted to do so. Stay professional and indicate by your words and your actions that you really do respect your customer’s time. If you’re disastrously behind, give a call to some of your later clients and see if you can reschedule them, or at least give them a heads up that you’re running late.

Unfortunately, many stylists struggle with the fear of selling, often feeling uncomfortable or pushy when trying to make a sale. Overcoming this fear is essential for not only the stylists success, but also the success of the salon. In today's episode, we will discuss five ways to overcome the fear of selling.

  1. Shift focus to the client's needs: Encourage hairstylists to view selling not as a pushy, self-serving process, but as a way to help clients achieve their desired hair goals. By prioritizing the client's needs, hairstylists can feel more confident and comfortable making product or service recommendations.

Salon owners often start out in the industry as stylists who are passionate about providing excellent customer service and making their guests feel beautiful and confident. As a stylist, the focus is on personal goals and delivering exceptional service to clients, which can be incredibly rewarding. However, when a stylist becomes a salon owner, everything changes.

Becoming a successful salon owner is no longer about individual achievements, but rather about nurturing and supporting a team of employees to become their best selves. This transition can be challenging, but it is necessary for growth and success.

One way to begin transitioning from working behind the chair to becoming a full-time owner is to step back slowly. Consider removing one shift every quarter or every six months to ease into the change. Another helpful tip is to start a leadership team that includes members from each department.

Consistent leadership team and salon staff meetings are also essential for success, as they allow for planning, coaching, and collaboration. It is also important to coach, mentor, and guide each team member through their career path.

Lastly, it is essential to approach this transition with love, compassion, and heart. Treating everyone with the same kindness and respect that you would want to receive can go a long way in building a successful team and business.

I recently read an article in Modern Salon, with exciting news about the potential and stability of the beauty industry.

A study was recently carried out in 330 salon locations across 36 states, representing approximately $184 million in payroll compensation. The study involved the submission of W2 earnings from 3,391 employees and a 50-question survey that gathered both qualitative and quantitative information. The study team wrote the survey and a think tank was assembled to review it for any methodology errors or biases.

The Study findings were revealing. Previously published statistics on beauty professionals showed low hourly wages and little opportunity for growth. This updated research tells a different story.

Here are the results of the study:

·         The average hourly rate for a salon professional in the study was $38.37/hour.

·         24% of those surveyed earned more than $48.08/hr—the amount necessary to earn $100k+/year if adjusted to a 40-hour work week.

·         The average W2 was $54,307, but if adjusted to full-time hours, that went up to $79,807.

·         Beauty pros enjoy flexibility in their hours. The average amount worked was 27.8 hours per week, and 99% of owners offer scheduling flexibility.

·         96% of salons are offering benefits to employees and 90% offer new hire training programs/ongoing education.

There were many notable findings from the study, which those familiar with the salon industry may not be surprised to learn. But for the first time, we have data to educate owners, professionals, prospective students interested in a career in beauty. One exciting finding in the Study was the potential and stability the beauty industry offers. There are 30+ careers available to beauty pros and 94% of businesses are hiring.

 

“While other industries are doing mass layoffs or contracting their workforce, the data shows plenty of open jobs in the beauty industry. There’s a level of job security in the beauty industry that other industries don’t provide.”

“The data confirms what many industry insiders know—a career in beauty offers the potential for strong earnings, scheduling flexibility, and the ability to practice a craft you love”. “This data can help bridge the gap between perception versus reality on what a career in beauty really looks like, for those inside and outside the industry.”

I vividly recall the day when I checked my schedule to see who was coming in. Like many stylists, I have my favorite guests and that day, I was thrilled to see one of them on my schedule.

As she sat in my chair, I noticed something was different and asked if she was okay. To my surprise, she burst into tears and held my hand, sharing that she had just been diagnosed with cancer. In that moment, my own eyes filled with tears and all I could do was embrace her.

At the time, I was still early in my career and had not been trained on how to safely care for a client with a compromised immune system. Looking back, I realize that I made mistakes and was not properly equipped to provide the care and support that she needed.

However, over the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of working with many women battling cancer and have learned a great deal about what to do and what not to do. In fact, performing makeovers for these women has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

If you are considering selling your salon, there are a few things I’d suggest. Maybe you hire a broker. Maybe you sell it to a stylist. Whatever your decision, you first need to know what your salon is worth. So, let’s talk about how you do that. 

The Two Common Business Valuation Methods are:

1.       Total revenue multiplied by 25% to 35% + fair market value of inventory

2.       Two to Three times the pretax income + fair market value of inventory

Example Salon

Let's assume a Beauty salon is 1500 sf, located in a retail strip center, and has a ton of foot traffic.  There are 10 stations and waxing and facial rooms.  It's the only salon within a 3 mile radius and there is 6 months remaining on the initial lease.  To generate additional sales the salon also sells hair, face, and nail products.

The financials are as below

| Product Revenue | $100,000 | $120,000 | $130,000
| Total Revenue | $400,000 | $470,000 | $530,000
| Payroll | $250,000 | $300,000 | $350,000
| Pre-tax Income | $74,000 | $81,000 | $90,000
| Inventory | $30,000 | $30,000 | $30,000

 Steps to Calculating the Value of a Beauty Salon

1.       Estimate the fair market value of all the inventory.  In the beauty salon business products can expire.  It's not uncommon to factor in a discount of about 20% to 30%.  After using a 25% discount the inventory for 2016 would be valued at $22,500

2.       Determine the right multiple of pretax income.  A strong business will have a higher multiple.

3.       Determine the strengths and weaknesses of the business.  

4.       Take all the factors into account and run both formulas.  For this example, let's assume the middle of the road seems best.

$530,000 X 30% = $159,000 + $22,500 (fair market value of inventory).  Total = $181,500

2.5 X $90,000 = $225,000 + $22,500 (fair market value of inventory).  Total = $247,500

Splitting the two numbers above and taking all the other factors into account a good place to start is somewhere around $225,000

Dealing with certain clients can really suck the life out of you, you know? These are the ones I like to call "toxic clients" because they just bring this heavy energy with them that's hard to explain. Even if they claim to mean well, it doesn't make their impact any less draining. All you want to do is throw in the towel and head home. It totally ruins your day and it's not fair to your other clients or your reputation because they end up seeing the exhausted version of you.

When you're just starting out and trying to build your client base, you’ve got to have a bit of patience, you know? But here's the thing: don't fall for that nonsense when people say that putting up with abusive behavior is just part of the job. Yeah, it can happen occasionally, but it's definitely not the norm, and you shouldn't put up with it. Here's a daily reminder for you, right there in the salon:  you, and only you, teach people how to treat you. So, make sure you respect your own personal and professional boundaries, and make it clear to others that they’ve got to do the same.
