03 Jul 202307 | Katrina Mohr - Wildland Firefighting00:46:49

Katrina Mohr is a federal wildland firefighter for the US Forest Service based out in Idaho. Katrina has worked her way through the ranks over the past decade and has parlayed her experience into an educational blog, the5ftfirefighter.com to help others navigate through the minutiae of the application process.

We discuss the current state of the Canadian wildfires that have been raging on the East Coast, what wildland firefighters are and what it takes to become one, how this career path differs from the more well-known traditional “building” firefighters – or "structure" firefighters as they’re formally known, along with the fundamentals of wildfires themselves – how they occur, how they spread, and how the various wildland firefighting personnel coordinate with one another to mitigate and contain them.

03 Nov 202422 | Tom Turcich - The World Walk00:39:01

Tom Turcich is the 10th person to walk around the world, and his loyal companion - Savannah - made history as the first dog to walk around the world. She offered a constant presence that helped fill the all-too-common void of isolation and loneliness as he walked over 28,000 miles over a seven year period across six continents. There were no motors and no pedals, just deliberate, human-powered exploration on foot into the unknown over 28,000 miles over a seven year period across six continents.

His recent book, The World Walk, is more than just an account of this adventure; it offers a unique perspective, not just as a traveler, but as a witness to the raw, unfiltered essence of humanity. It’s a profound narrative about resilience, connection, and dismantling pre-conceived notions about the people and cultures along the way, and above all, it highlights the unbreakable bond, and the unspoken understanding, between a man and his dog.

08 Apr 2023Man in the Arena - Theodore Roosevelt (1910)00:00:56

Welcome to the first season of the Adventures Less Traveled Podcast. Each episode will be released on a bi-weekly basis and will consist of interviews with guests who fall into one of the four following categories: (1) start-to-finish adventurers (2) professional adventurers (3) researchers, and (4) adventurers throughout history.

The show has attracted an eclectic mix of guests - a former rugby player who rowed a boat across the Atlantic Ocean, a married couple from London who have broken Guinness World Records for the fastest circumnavigation around the world on two bikes, a solo female cyclist who rode through the middle east during the midst of an ISIS attack, a former US Navy diver who completed the first "low to high" mountaineering expedition from Death Valley to Denali in the USA, and plenty of others whom all define "adventure" in their own unique way. Every person has a story to tell; this podcast takes the most exciting chapters from each one.

We all strive to be the "man in the arena" but very few of us actually take that first step.

05 Jun 202420 | Neil Laughton - Adventureholic00:46:51

It's one thing to climb the tallest mountain in the world. It's another thing to have the world's highest black tie dinner party atop it. Neil Laughton is an "adventureholic" whose expeditions range from the classic seven-summits ascents, to the unusual such as rowing a bathtub around the Solent, or hosting a game of cricket on the geographic south pole, or driving the world's first street-legal flying car across the Sahara from London to Timbuktu.

Neil has more stories than can possibly be fit into a single podcast episode, but I tried to learn as much as I could in the time allotted. He also published Adventureholic which outlines over 50 of these adventures in great detail for those looking to learn more.

04 Jun 202305 | Dr. Alison Criscitiello - Ice Core Research00:41:48

Dr. Alison Criscitiello is an Ice Core Researcher and Director of the Canadian Ice Core Lab (CICL) at the University of Alberta, whose career has led her to some of the most remote places on the planet including her recent expedition to Mount Logan to drill a record-breaking 327-meter ice core into the summit's plateau.

Her adventurous spirit has also led her to other awe-inspiring expeditions outside of academics including an arctic cycling trip from Dawson to Tuktoyaktuk, an overland winter ski traverse across the Pamir mountains in Tajikistan, and led the first all-women ascent of Pinnacle Peak in the Himalayan mountain range.

In addition to her work with the CICL, she is also a National Geographic Explorer and Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and holds the first Ph.D conferred by M.I.T. in Glaciology.

26 Mar 202419 | Edd Sorenson - Body Rescue & Recovery (Cave Diving Part 2)00:47:06

Oftentimes cave diving doesn't go as planned, and when it doesn't, the most likely outcome is a slow inevitable death. Wedged between narrow gaps in caves with no means of escaping, divers become trapped and typically die by hypocapnia as a result. Of the individuals who are found and returned to the surface, almost none of them come out alive (body rescue). The overwhelming majority of them end up in a body bag (body recovery).

Edd Sorenson is known to be the only person with more than one body rescue in the world… he has six. So if there is any chance of survival, there is not a more equipped and more experienced individual to return these trapped divers back to their families - dead or alive.

Edd is a cave diving instructor examiner and body rescue & recovery specialist based out of Marianna, Florida. He is the founder of Cave Adventurers, a cave diving training and exploration company, and is known for his expertise in body rescue and recovery during rescue missions to bring back individuals who get stuck inside underwater caves. Edd discusses his track record, how he got involved, differences between cave diving vs open water diving, what the allure of cave diving is, how he compartmentalizes death, and one particular experience of having to break a body apart to get it to the surface.

25 Sep 202312 | Andrew Mortensen - Cycling 17,000 miles to Patagonia00:48:01

Andrew Mortensen was quite possibly one of the first people to foresee the inevitable economic destruction of COVID, working as a financial analyst for a major airline around the time of the initial wave. With graduate school on the horizon and a stroke of fortuitous timing, Andrew seized an opportunity amid the chaos to ride his bike across the USA from Neah Bay, WA to Yorktown, VA. He soon realized, however, that there was much more of the world to see. He continued his trip down through Central and South America, ultimately ended up in Patagonia, for a total of nearly 17,000 miles over an 8 month period through 12 countries, facing countless COVID restrictions, a couple close calls on the highway, and a robbery. Along the way, he raised over $10,000 for the Trevor Project - a charity focused on suicide prevention among the LGTBQ+ community.

17 Jul 202308 | Damian Browne - Trans-Atlantic Ocean Row01:14:33

Damian Browne is collectively defined as an extreme adventurer. In 2022, he set the record as being the first person to row a boat across the Atlantic Ocean from New York City to Galway, Ireland, covering nearly 3,000 nautical miles. Shockingly, this was not his first time - in 2018, he rowed a boat from Antigua to the Canary Islands, making him one of very few people to ever row both East-to-West and West-to-East.

You would think this would be the end of the story. However, Damian has also completed the grueling 5 day, 120 mile Marathon des Sables in 110F+ heat, ascended all 7 Summits, and has journeyed through 65 / 196 countries throughout the world, and competed in an accomplished rugby career for 16 years, among countless other achievements that were not able to be covered in this episode.

20 Jun 202421 | Andrew Mortensen - First Known Openly Gay Man To Cycle The World00:49:51

You may recognize Andrew Mortensen from a previous episode when he cycled from Neah Bay, Washington in the United States down to Patagonia during COVID back in 2020. Here we are 4 years later in 2024, and he's done it again. This time adding 25 more countries to his repertoire from Spain to Singapore, bringing his grand total to over 27,000 cycling miles across 37 countries - officially circumnavigating the world. What makes his story different than others who have accomplished similar feats? He is the first openly gay man to do so.

I have been friends with Andrew since high school and I am very proud of the journey he has undertaken - both literally around the world on a bicycle as well as his journey as a gay man. His curiosity to better understand the people and cultures around the world epitomizes the adventurous spirit that we all should embrace - regardless of identity.

10 Dec 202316 | Nicole Heker - Unlearning by Bike00:55:55

During her studies at Penn State, a Sociology professor told Nicole Heker to "unlearn everything you know" during a lecture in order to form opinions of other cultures through first-hand experience. She took this to heart and set off on a cycling trip in 2018 from Thailand to Spain, crossing through the Middle East on the Pamir Highway.

She has experienced the highest of highs, directing non-profit charities in Nepal to help impoverished children, as well as the lowest of lows after dodging a terrorist attack from ISIS in Turkmenistan.

We explore the concept of "unlearning," her cycling adventures, her venture into a medicinal herb farm, and more.

16 Oct 2023Journal Entry 02 | Wilderness Survival00:10:27

We hear stories all too often of people who venture into the wilderness and don't make it out alive. Instead of chastising these people, I want to take a particular example from an article someone sent me and learn from it. A woman was hiking along the Appalachian Trail, got lost and didn't survive, despite only being a few hundred yards away from where rescue teams were looking for her. I want to break down what she did well, and where did she ultimately fall short. He began with a 3,600-mile bike tour to traverse between the two locations, and proceeded to summit Mt. Denali once arriving in Alaska.

Sean is also an active ultra-marathon runner who has completed numerous 100+ mile races including the Badwater 135, and is the originator of the Denali 135 race through Denali National Park. When he's not undertaking such grueling endeavors, he manages Hewn Spirits distillery in Eastern Pennsylvania.
