21 Jul 2022 | ACU-035 Mindset Monday: The Wounded Healer In Medical Practice | 00:32:35
Can you practice medicine as a wounded healer archetype? As children we may have had to read the room before we walked thru it because we were physically or sexually abused by family. We might have learned to know how someone feels by how they moved thru the room or even opened a door.
We might recognize a parent or sibling on the edge of some sort of meltdown and found that if we do or say something special we could not only get “love”, but also change the potential outcome of that mood. We develop “extra-sensory awareness” to survive our situation which later is VERY useful when working as a healer. We develop “extra-sensory awareness” to survive our situation which later is VERY useful when working as a healer. I often just “know” what points to use. Especially if I palpate and touch someone. I often know when someone feels worse or better than they are letting on because i can feel it in my body. I can feel the second someone shifts when the needles are in because I can feel it in my body. This doesn’t just happen for me in clinic. This happens everywhere. But I use it in clinic. Because it is a gift. If I can keep my panic monster at bay and the imposter syndrome monster quiet, treating patients just flows for me. But it is a double edged sword. We have to look for ways to allow those wounds, use our powers to help others heal, all while honoring our own ongoing process of not being perfect yet being perfectly lovable because of it. Honor your own ongoing process of not being perfect, yet being perfectly lovable because of it.We also need to understand that many humans who were also wounded do not become healers. They become people who wound. Because they were disempowered they crave control and power and often gain that by wounding others. As healers we need to understand that WE are uniquely gifted in helping those wounded wounders similarly heal their traumas and thereby potentially healing others instead of hurting them. WE are uniquely gifted in helping those wounded wounders similarly heal their traumas and thereby potentially healing others instead of hurting them.In my experience of working with other practitioners, and being a wounded healer myself i have identified : Three ways Wounded healers go wrong in practice.
New practitioners are especially vulnerable to this pattern because they often have a high level of imposter syndrome which is completely normal but our reaction because of our past trauma is not commensurate with the challenge. We tend to over give and try too hard. Or we become frozen and don’t perform the things we know will bring more patients and create more success.

29 Sep 2022 | ACU-040 Should A New Acupuncturist Start A Podcast? with Michael Max LAc. | 00:24:24
Are you a new Acupuncturist who wants to start a podcast?Success is not a straight line. It is a succession of failed experiments, hard work, strong networks, support systems, timing and happy mistakes. In this episode, on a random Sunday afternoon while testing new recording software a great little happy mistake of a podcast episode is born. I invite my Grumpy Uncle, Michael Max onto a mock podcast just to fill some airtime that I can later tinker with, but it was too good to not share. Today’s GuestMICHAEL MAX LAC.I’ve been a student of acupuncture and Chinese medicine for going on 20 years now. It began as a curiosity as to how a few needles could not only resolve a stubborn health condition I’d had since childhood, but also improve my digestion, quality of sleep and mood. This lead me first to acupuncture school, and then Asia where I worked my way through the gate of Chinese language so I could study with doctors there. Today my work is informed by my clinical practice, the materials I read in Chinese from doctors of centuries past, and the teachers of our modern times who synthesize observations of the past with the challenges of the present. This podcast is rooted in my own curiosity, inquiry and appreciation for different points of view. In this episode we discuss:

22 Nov 2022 | ACU-044 New Acupuncturist Megan Neal On Starting A Family And A Medical Practice At The Same Time | 01:03:58
Are you a new parent AND graduate?Trying to pass your boards in your last trimester and start a practice with a newborn? In this episode I talk with Megan Neal as she navigates these GIANT life transitions and how she is SO ready to practice medicine! As I see it, there is rarely a perfect time for anything. When is the perfect time to go to medical school? What about starting a family? When should you start working on your Doctoral degree? Or maybe it’s time to start taking better care of yourself. What I have learned is that life just keeps getting fuller and fuller as you age. If there is a space in my closet I will fill it. If there is free time in my schedule, I will find ways of putting “more doing” in there. What ever happened to slowly and gently building something of value? Of mindfully constructing the life we were born worthy of? Of gently inviting the blissful whispers of our dreams to slowly unfurl in our waking life. Our fears of not having enough, not being enough and not doing enough cause us to race into jobs, relationships and life in ways that only cause congestion in our otherwise smooth and clear life path. Our medicine is what I like to call slow medicine. It works best when we slow our lives down and focus only on the patient in front of us. It works best when the patient relaxes their grip on the speeding train of life for one hour of slow breathing, genuine care gently shifting the scales of life force back in their favor. I want to invite you to consider practicing slow medicine. For yourself and your patients. Today’s GuestMEGAN NEAL LAC. Megan Neal dedicated her life to the study of Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine after transformational experiences with it in her late twenties. At the same time in her life, she encountered yoga, Ashtanga yoga and then Integral Yoga, and has been walking the path ever since. Today Megan is an Arizona state licensed Acupuncturist, board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, NCCAOM, expected November 2022. She is also Arizona state certified by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, CCAOM, in Clean Needle Technique. Upon graduating from her three year masters program, her and her husband had a beautiful baby boy. She was fortunate to use what she had learned to care for herself in the journey to motherhood. She was thus inspired to specialize in women’s health- fertility, pregnancy, perinatal and postpartum care. She has no spare time but if she did, she imagines she would again enjoy writing morning pages, finding hidden pools on Mt. Lemmon, playing the harmonium, five rhythms dance, and continuing to nerd out with her collection of Chinese Medicine books. 16 Mar 2023 | ACU-051 3 Strategies To Retain Patients And Increase Revenue with Stacey Whitcomb LAc. | 00:32:02
Join The Monthly NewsletterIn this episode……ACU-051 Today I’m going to talk about the biggest mistakes I see newbies making with regards to patient retention that keeps you from gaining any traction. No matter what type of marketing you do, how much you spend on advertising, If you cannot keep your patients committed to a treatment plan long enough to get well, then you are spinning your wheels. Now before I go any further I feel like it’s super important to define patient retention. Patient retention is a practice’s ability to turn new patients into loyal patients. Patient retention is measured as a percentage, which you can calculate by dividing the number of returning patients by the total number of patients for your practice minus the number of new patients. The higher your retention rate is, the better it is for your practice. That’s because patient retention and practice profitability are linked. If you want an average practice then you would shoot for about 48%. Really we are getting ahead of ourselves, because you probably haven’t been in practice long enough to have enough numbers to play this game. As a new practitioner the goal is to create a relationship where the patient has recovered or is recovering from their chief complaint, they refer their friends and family to you, and they come back to get treatment as needed. The three most important strategies to consider with regards to patient retention are:

18 Jul 2023 | ACU-055 Business Basics: How To Run Multiple Treatment Rooms with Megan Lindsey DACM | 01:00:34
Explore What Jane Has To Offer!!!Are you ready to level up? Not sure how to transition from 1 room to 2 or 3? This is such a common question I often get from my coaching clients. How do you treat 2 patients an hour? As a business coach to new practitioners, I get this question SO often! So… I called in my friend Megan who purchased a very busy clinic as a relatively new practitioner and basically started her career treating multiple patients an hour. We all definitely have our comfort zone as practitioners, but I think it’s important for you to consider getting to two rooms as quickly as possible. It’s more time and financially efficient and oh-so-fun! As new practitioners we often spend way too much time and do way too much per visit in one hour. Running 2 rooms an hour forces you to be efficient with your time and trust your needles to do the work. I promise it works! Listen in as Megan and I share our processes. today’s guestMEGAN LINDSEY, DACM, OWNER OF SILVER SAGE ACUPUNCTUREMegan completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University Northridge before switching gears and coninuing her education at Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a Taoist school with a 38-generation lineage, located in Los Angeles, Ca. She is a Nationally Ceritfied Diploamate of Oriental Medicine and a California Board licensed acupuncturist. After graduating in 2014 she struggled with opening her own clinic and finding her way. After some stops and starts in 2017, she landed on purchasing an acupuncture clinic from a practitioner who was retiring, She has unique insight into the pros, cons and profitability of this route of practice. More recently, she graduated from Pacific College of Health and Science as a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine (DACM). Megan is a direct and open person who has a knack for creating soft nurturing, aesthetically soul comforting environments. Her space helps patients sink deeply into healing while feeling safe and supported. She advocates for her patients to empower themselves through education and lifestyle changes. 18 Jan 2023 | ACU-048 Overcome Perfectionism, Get Unstuck And Start Your Acupuncture Practice, with Stacey Whitcomb LAc. | 00:43:55
Hey friends. Are you stuck?Afraid to open your practice, get a job, go to a networking meeting, learn to play pickle ball, create an instagram reel? Are you afraid of what your classmates, relatives, future patients, former teachers and your neighbor Bob think of you? Think about it. If everyone were perfect: What would comedians talk about? Would you actually have a job or career? And here is a tragedy I am not sure I could have gotten thru medical school without. The TV show, The Big Bang Theory would never have made it. I mean, this is a whole 13 year run of a show literally based on the imperfections of ALL of its characters. Not being perfect makes you interesting. But before I continue I want you to know that I hear you. And I see you. Because i am you. I can make light of being a perfectionist and talk about how uninterested people really are about what you are doing. That it’s fine and you matter and that you are unique and perfect in all of your imperfections. But that doesn’t really get us to the root of the problem does it? today’s episode

Using deliberate practice to grow an Acupuncture ClinicIn today’s episode I am going to give you 8 intentional and deliberate practices to grow a soul fulfilling and successful Acupuncture practice. Having a vision for your future, your career and your personal life will help you stay aligned with your calling, contentment and goals. And it’s okay if it changes along the way, or ends because then you can gather the information and feelings for this new situation and create another path forward with another focused intention. If you live with intention you will be less likely to wake up to a practice ten years from now that you dread. Treating patients you don’t enjoy. Not making the money you would like or traveling the world like you always wanted. Here is the magical pathway:
In order to create a practice that you love and are in alignment with try this, but be flexible. Because things will change. Stay in tune and set quarterly appointments with yourself to touch base and make sure you still want what you are working towards. If an amazing opportunity comes along and it is in alignment with your vision but not part of the plan, grab it! Because when you get in alignment with your inner drive and self so does the universe. Accept the gifts. And when nothing is going your way and everything is an uphill battle. Re-evaluate. Is what you want in your highest good? Be flexible. Be consisteent Be curious Enjoy the process. 12 Oct 2022 | ACU-041 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: A Conversation About How To Expand Your Thinking And Create An Inclusive Healthcare Clinic, with Kiki Toth of Jane | 00:55:21
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in your medical practice starts with YOU.The willingness and courage to have uncomfortable conversations so that your clinic stands on ethical ground starts with doing your own internal work. To sort thru your own programming and call yourself out to become a better human and practitioner is the first step to building a safe and inclusive clinic and becoming aware of how much hidden bias affects healthcare and treatment outcomes. I don’t think any of us would ever intentionally do something in clinic or elsewhere that would diminish another person, but bias in healthcare is a very big detriment. I was very uncomfortable in this interview, and with good reason! I was ignorant. I was hiking into unknown territory with a moral compass, but no map. I am really grateful to have had such a generous and kind tour guide in Kiki to start my journey. Today’s GuestKiki Toth, Product and DEI Specialist at JaneHi! My name is Kiki and I'm a Product and DEI Specialist here at Jane. I've worked in a few areas at Jane since starting in March 2020, including Support helping out our customers and as a Learning and Development Associate guiding our newbies through the beginning of their journey here at Jane. 26 Oct 2022 | ACU-042 Employee or Independent Contractor? What's an Acupuncturist to do? | 00:29:18
Employee or Independent Contractor? What's an Acupuncturist to do?Oct 26 Are you a new Acupuncturist? Were you just offered an amazing JOB, to be brought on as an Associate? Was the offer an independent contractor position?Watch out! It’s probably not as great as it looks.Listen in as I explain why.ACU-042 Okay, so you've graduated and now you have to decide what's next. Maybe you already know where and who you're gonna work for, or where your clinic's gonna open, or who your ideal patient is, and maybe even what your treatment focus will be, but. I doubt it because life doesn't really work that way for most of us, and in my experience working with and supporting new practitioners, you don't really know what's next upon graduation. Life gets jumbled again. You relocate, you have babies, you get divorced, you interview for jobs, you work for other acupuncturists, you share space and or you start your own business, et cetera, et cetera. But here's the truth. The snapshot taken five years after your initial career choice after your initial start as an acupuncturist is typically radically different. So what you thought you wanted changed the location where you started no longer suits you. You worked for three practitioners before you found a clinic that resonates with your treatment style and goals. You thought you wanted to treat women's health challenges only to find out that hospice is where you truly belong. I wanna tell you a little secret. It's okay, . It's supposed to happen. Just as it happens. You aren't doing it wrong and you aren't failing. You did some serious growth in school. We went in as like, I'm gonna be super cheesy here for a second, but you went in as a caterpillar and now you're about to fly. Seriously. Now think about this. Think about how much you have changed from the beginning of school to where you are now. And I know that this is super cheesy, but serious. Take some time to get used to those wings, like take your time and be gentle with the new version of you. If Chinese medicine teaches us anything, it's that everything has cycles and so does your career. You're going to have to learn to grow into your practice, and it's okay to change directions, and it's okay to change your mind about things as your experience levels change. What you’ll learn:

17 Aug 2022 | ACU-037 Mindset Monday: The Wounded Healer In Business with Stacey Whitcomb LAc. | 00:34:03
“Wounded Healer” In Business: How Build A Medical Practice That Is Safe For Your Patients AND For You!If you don’t create a practice with practices in place to continually check in with yourself as a “empath, wounded healer, or highly sensitive person”, you may actually be causing yourself harm.Much like everything else in life, the world is a very different space for empaths, wounded healer and highly sensitive people. Seemingly small things can trigger your nervous system and suddenly you can’t figure out why your heart is racing and you feel like you need to run, or you need to be in a quiet space for a few minutes…..or days. And if you are an empath like me, that is just what can happen before breakfast. In this episode I talk about the top three things where the “wounded healer” struggles in creating a safe and healthy (for them) medical practice and how to shift and create healthier practices so you can love the practice you create. In this episode I talk about the top three challenges we face which include poor boundaries, overcompensating and low self esteem. (Conversely, I don’t actually talk about your superpowers! 11 Jul 2020 | ACU-001 Welcome to the AcuSprout Podcast! | 00:09:46
WELCOME TO THE ACUSPROUT PODCAST!
Let"s face it. Being new at anything can be slow going. Most Acupuncturists just want to hit the ground running and make some well deserved cash. I really wish it worked that way, but reality is far from this mystical unicorn ideology if you want to start your own practice. Starting a practice is at least worth another year of schooling, but maybe that's not even your goal. Maybe you want to work as a contractor or an employee for a couple years. Perhaps.... you will escape the "business classroom". (Unlikely!) At some point you are going to have to roll your sleeves up and gather some skills. AcuSprout is the perfect place to slowly build up your business skillset arsenal one podcast at a time. Join Stacey Whitcomb DiplOM, LAc. and the community! Grab your seat at the communal table and let's share with each other some tasty treats on how to grow heathy practices. NOTE: I mention building a Patreon community in this podcast. There WILL be a community evolving. I am re-evaluating it’s genesis. Keep listening for ways to connect! Mentioned in this episode:

ACUPUNCTURE FOR AUTO ACCIDENT INJURIES. HOW YOU CAN HELP.I have such a huge fear of getting in a car accident that it actually launches me into at least level 3 anxiety every time I drive. We hit a deer when I was six years old and I was in the front seat. (I am old, y’all.) I still remember it in detail. The car was totaled, all on my side. I was okay, or was I?
Enter Acupuncture. Our medicine is holistically perfect to heal this kind of physical and emotional trauma. Listen in and learn how you can help! TODAY’S GUEST
Geoff Geness is one of the few dual licensed Chiropractors in Oregon, practicing both chiropractic and acupuncture to best meet the needs of his patients, As a anatomy and physiology instructor, as well as structural diagnosis and orthopedic testing lecturer, he brings enthusiasm and clarity to the study of objective case management and evidence-based treatment of traumatic injuries. He has been practicing CAM medicine since 2007, and teaches a diverse group of undergraduate through post graduate students preparing for careers in healthcare. "My understanding of anatomy from a bio-mechanical perspective informs the way I treat, and Chinese medicine allows me to treat the mental and emotional aspects of people to promote overall health. I improve the mobility of joints and muscles, thereby improving function and reducing pain, and enjoy guiding people back to health by educating them about themselves. I use acupuncture to directly and discretely touch the nervous system, and promote organ system health through herbal formulations. By approaching each person in relation to structure, chemical balance and energetics I strive to quickly address their concerns and improve their health.” FIND HIM HERE: SPARKASHLAND.COM YOU’LL LEARN

MINDSET MONDAYWe talk about intention so often in Chinese Medical School. Prior to treating that patient you need to have a clear intention, and you get there by doing a full evaluation, diagnosing and then formulating a plan. In business, our VISION is our INTENTION. It is the seeing before the doing. It is about getting clear on where we want to go, how we affect our community, how we want to do things, who we want to attract and how we want to behave. It’s the voice that guides the internal workings of your company, whether that is just you, or your staff of 20 employees. In this episode I teach you exactly what steps you need to take as you are finishing up your boards. Most of us can’t wait to get out and start practicing when we graduate, but have no idea that there are a gazillion boxes to tic off before we can even find a snazzy place to call, “Office”. PLANT SEED, GROW PRACTICE, BE YOU.Have you thought about how you want to present this medicine to the world? I mean, YOU are the artist of your own life, right? Do you even know the medium of your best communications? Do you write, perform, sink your toes in the mud, ask challenging questions that other people would never utter, or do you sing, do yoga, meditate, or cook? What is the best expression of you that isn’t actually you? While I cannot crawl through the curious mind of my next guest, I can see how she hiked through the natural world of her own inner landscape to gain a clear expression of what her practice of Chinese Medicine would become. You definitely want to check it out. Hello! My name is Regan Goodrich. I'm an acupuncturist and massage therapist by trade and a true believer in the human spirit. My hope is to inspire active participation in daily existence, to shift the mundane to something sacred. One million stars had to explode in the exact order in which they did for us to be here and that means you were made for this. Seed was born from the idea that you already have everything you need to be your own hero. Imagine a giant sequoia tree swaying in the breeze. It all started as a tiny seed, finally taking root under optimal conditions to become its true, majestic form. My mission is to create an experience where you can explore and occupy your body in order to nurture your own unique seed, helping you to root down + sprout into your authenticity, health and well-being. This medicine is slow, steady and celebrates the cycles of life; expansion + contraction. I use a wide variety of modalities including acupuncture, electro acupuncture, bodywork, herbs, food choices, and movement suggestion to nudge your qi into a dynamic balance. I'm excited to meet you and can't wait to see where our journey will take us. YOU’LL LEARN

IS YOUR WEBSITE ADA COMPLIANT? GET IT DONE IN 2021!How do you make sure your website is ADA compliant? That is a huge question with multiple answers and hazy guidelines. In this episode I (Stacey) unpack the topic with attorney Rachel Schumont of Counsel For Wellness, located in California. I was recently strolling thru Facebookland looking to see if there was anything interesting and topic worthy to dig into with the podcast when I saw that one of the Facebook Aculanders was being sued for ADA non-compliance on his website. He is a solo practitioner. Not a large corporation. It lit the acu-twitterland on FIRE! There were SO many offers of information and help but no one really had any definitive answers or solid solutions other than to hire an attorney. I genuinely think everyone wanted to help him but let’s be real, we really don’t want THAT to happen to us either! I have been working with Rachel on a series of podcasts to present this Spring about all things legal in an Acupuncture practice. Luckily for us, she was willing to do some digging and able to offer up some education for this podcast. FIND RACHEL HERE: YOU’LL LEARN

COULD THIS BE THE PRACTICE OF THE FUTURE?I went in search of a practitioner who was practicing medicine in the business model I was envisioning as a result of the Pandemic. A practice with multiple streams of income that housed an educational community and platform to answer questions and share the fundamentals of Chinese Medicine. A way to spotlight the spectrum of natural ways it can help people heal. I was looking for a way to treat patients in my office and remotely, and also a way to connect with an build relationships with people who want to be healthier but maybe aren’t ready for the needles while creating passive streams of income. Here is what I found. I found a newish graduate who had a baby AND launched a practice a couple months after graduation. A social media expert who might catch up to The Rock sometime soon. A young, intelligent and well spoken woman who NEVER in ANY of our conversations let on that her life changing events were anything but motivational and helpful in her success. And I promise you that you want to stick around to the end to hear what her vision of success is. TODAY’S GUEST
Caitria's connection to the natural medicine realm began early in life, thanks to her parents who exposed her to chiropractic, acupuncture, biofeedback, and osteopathy for various issues throughout childhood. She began acupuncture school at a young age after stumbling upon a school 30 minutes from her hometown, where she felt an instant connection to TCM. Starting her practice just a few months before the birth of her daughter led to some outside-the-box marketing techniques that really paid off. She now practices in her dream clinic in Southern Wisconsin, working primarily with women's health, pediatrics, and mental health. YOU’RE NEW……WHAT TO DO? AN EXPLORATION OF POSSIBILITIES.New practitioners have SO many choices to make that often feel heavy. We have been a cog in the wheel of the educational machine where we are told exactly what hoops to jump through for 4 years. Suddenly, we sprout into the “real” world and are taxed with the challenge of making a living again. The options of where, how, and with whom are abundant. Do you want to be an employee for a couple years? Do you know how much you should be paid? Should you be an independent contractor or an employee? Take insurance? Start our own practice? Or maybe you want to purchase a clinic. There are SO many steps involved in that too! Listen in as I chat with MaryAnn Geness, DC. about EVERY aspect of business ownership. Dr. Geness has personally experienced every strata of the business world. She has been an employee, an independent contractor, associate, partner and boss. She has purchased a practice, sold a practice and dissolved a practice. She has owned large practices, a medium sized practice and a solo practice. She has pretty much done it all and we are fortunate that she is willing to share her experiences. Grab your tea and a cookie and enjoy the show! TODAY’S GUEST
DR MARYANN GENESS has been in the healing arts for 25 years, first as a massage therapist and then as a chiropractor for the last fourteen years. She started into chiropractic as an Associate and then ran several large CAM practices, before selling her practice and downsizing to a smaller practice so she could also run a net-zero farm in Southern Oregon. As a practitioner, she uses gentle humor and understanding, allowing patients to feel safe and open to learning without the feelings of guilt that doctors' opinions can sometimes bring. She recognizes the importance of meeting people where they are and helping them get to where they want to go with love and self-respect. The time she spent as a massage therapist informed her techniques as a chiropractor and she spends a lot of time on the muscles and fascia along with the working on the joints. YOU’LL LEARN

Phil reviews an herbal case he encountered in clinic and breaks it all down for me. Enjoy the show! TODAY’S GUESTPHIL SETTELS LAC., Phil Settels graduated from ACCHS in 2011. Early on in his engagement with Chinese Medicine, Phil had the opportunity to study with several amazing Shanghan Lun teachers, including Dr. Arnaud Verluys, Dr. Huang Huang and Dr. Suzanne Robidoux. Phil uses Classical Formulas almost exclusively in his own practice and in his teaching. Phil was brought in to design the curriculum of the ACCHS DAOM program which started in 2017, and he is currently the Dean of Academics. 15 Apr 2021 | ACU-022 How To Stay Professional and Legal Online with Rachel Schumont | 01:03:53
HOW TO STAY ON THE UPSIDE OF LEGAL IN A QUICKLY EVOLVING TECH WORLDI’m a freedom lover. I LOVE to navigate this world my way and rarely does it come close to the societal norm. I think a lot of Practitioners of Chinese Medicine are like this. We tend to be the outliers and renegades. However, I often see the tendency for Acupuncturists to sweep legal professionalism into the gray space. Not doing due diligence with the “seemingly small things”, like HIPAA compliant emails and posting photos on social media. It’s easy to gloss over these details when starting a practice and it’s hard to recall specifically from our education what best practices are. Our ethics and jurisprudence classes are short and relatively boring and mashed in between the high demands of memorizing an entire pharmacopeia. SO….this is my continued graduation gift to you. Let’s till the proverbial soil and plant some very healthy and robust seeds. In order to keep that seed alive and help it grow, we might encounter some tasks that are not fun but necessary for it to thrive. The same goes for your career and practice. Stay informed about the ever-changing climate and world of technology. Just like following the rules of nature, there are rules that you have to follow with your practice so that you can thrive. In this episode we are going to touch on some laws and practices you need to be aware of as new practitioners. Make sure the light shines on the soil. No shady practices here. We are talking mostly about your online presence and what you need to be aware of with regards to social media, HIPAA compliance, BAA agreements, webinars, emails, phones, and newsletters.

I have personal and professional mantras on repeat in my head all the time. Some are even incorporated into my meditations. Are you challenged with perfectionism? Me too. Producing a podcast has taught me this: PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION. Since I have started podcasting nothing meets my perfect standards. Podcasts are raw and conversational. Grammar, punctuation and proper sentence structure doesn’t exist. I say f***. My interviewees cuss, their dogs bark and their kids play bowling alley outside their office while we record. As I have grown, my website is getting confusing and my branding colors are getting lost. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s helpful. I hope it’s helpful….. No. I’m sure it’s helpful! Since I started my Acupuncture practice I have worked out of 3 different offices in 3 years. I started broad and am now re-defining my niche. I once had a pretty nice beginner website and now I am operating with just a landing page while I get my shit together, which takes time. Everything takes time. And I have two businesses, so it takes even more time. Before the pandemic I was able to pay myself a little bit. My practice was growing. Slowly, but it was growing. Enter freakish Pandemic which forced me to close. I came home and started a podcast. So far my only return on investment with the podcast is self satisfaction. What I do matters. The same is happening with the post apocalyptic re-launch of my practice. Invest more time, invest more money, work, work, work, and eventually the tide will turn. This is the way. It’s hard. Sometimes it’s lonely. Sometimes I feel like a Badass Superhero. Sometimes I feel like a total imposter. But I actually know what I am doing and I have a plan. That is something. That feels good! It’s all a process. I promise you this. If you don’t give up, you will get there. Start at the beginning and work your way to the end. That is all. That is success! A special thanks to Sarah LaVaque for this episode. She conducted a great interview. I couldn’t have done it better myself! TODAY’S GUESTSSARAH LAVAQUE LMT, CHINESE MEDICAL STUDENT Sarah LaVaque, BCTMB, is a board-certified massage therapist and TCM graduate student at Northwestern Health Sciences University. After a long and successful massage career of working with competitive level athletes, Stacey loaded up the Tiny House On Wheels and headed to Portland of course, to pursue her Masters in Chinese Medicine at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. (Yes, they are working on the “O” thing….) Upon graduation and launching a practice in a town where she didn’t know anyone she quickly realized two things. One, the landscape of business had changed drastically in the last 25 years and she had some catching up to do. And two, there were very few resources available to new practitioners. MINDSET MONDAY - TIME TO WORK ON SELF CONFIDENCE!Does this sound like you? You are just starting out and don’t know how to “get out there”. They taught you in school to join a networking group like BNI and the thought of it makes you want to self medicate. You have tried to reach out to the other Acupuncturists in town to introduce yourself and they don’t return your phone calls. You feel a little sad and rejected by this. You aren’t feeling confident. You suddenly aren’t sure how confident you are in your Acupuncture skills either. You want to go back to school and get more education so you can feel ready for this. You have spent marketing money on stupid stuff. Social media is a time suck and you aren’t getting patients. Being an entrepreneur requires a whole set of skills we didn’t learn in school. Actually, in some ways we learned the opposite. We learned to be sensitive, move intentionally, watch our language so we don’t harm with our words, be patient, have close conversations and be open and available for what comes. Business is different. In the beginning it can feel unkind, unrewarding, tiresome and full of rejection. If you are sensitive it can really take its toll on your confidence. But it is also rewarding, thought provoking and super fun when it’s clicking. Mostly, it just takes time and exploration to find your groove. In today’s episode I give you 6 (of many) mental health survival tips for your entry to the business world. YOU’LL LEARN

Yes, yes, of course, of course it could happen that they schedule with you right away, but I doubt it. People need repetition. They need to be struck multiple ways with your presence and message. They need to see you stick around so they can get to know you. They need someone else to tell them to go see you. They need to hear you talk about them in their own words. 17 May 2022 | ACU-030 New Acupuncturist Heidi Markland on SEO And Introverted Marketing Strategies | 01:06:05
introverted marketing 101: how a new acupuncturist can get patients in the door their wayAre you an introvert and new acupuncturist wondering how you are ever going to get patients in your clinic? Are you afraid that you are going to have to be salesy and social? Does the word “Marketing” make you want to crawl under your treatment table? YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! Most of us don’t come by sales, marketing, networking and being overall entrepreneurial naturally. Especially introverts! This is mostly because historically when we talk about buying something we are also conversely talking about being “sold” to. And that conjures up visions of car salesmen chasing us around car lots. Guess what! Sharing your skillset and serving people who need you is just another term for sales. It’s all in the delivery……. The internet has broken this marketing egg wide open for INTROVERTED ACUPUNCTURISTS! There are so many ways to reach the people you want to serve so that they hear you AND you get to be true to your own nature. In today’s episode I interview new Acupuncturist Heidi Markland about her experience as an introverted new practitioner in a new town and how she has navigated marketing her acupuncture practice. We talk about SEO, networking with kind intentions, picking a niche market and patient retention strategies. Enjoy the show! today’s guestHEIDI MARKLAND LAC., ANCIENT SPRING ACUPUNCTURE Instagram: @ancientspringacu Heidi embarked on her journey to better health after experiencing chronic fatigue for many years. She found increased energy and well-being after a family member, that was trained in Acupuncture and herbal Chinese Medicine, treated her with a regimen of herbs and food therapy. This began a journey of self-study into nutritional healing. The book “Healing with Whole Foods” became a staple that she read from cover to cover. This book introduced many core beliefs of Chinese Medicine and the idea of keeping the body in balance. She finally transitioned from a corporate job to a full-time student at the American College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), in Houston Texas. She fell in love with the beauty and culture of Coeur d’Alene while visiting family over the years. Through prayerful consideration and the new acquaintance of a local acupuncturist, the path forward was clear, and she hasn’t looked back. Her clinic is now located in downtown Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. you’ll learn

12 Dec 2022 | ACU-045 Case Study: Orthopedic Acupuncture Instead of A Total Shoulder Replacement with Anthony Von der Muhll, DAOM | 01:33:48
Explore What Jane Has To Offer!!!Case Study: Orthopedic Acupuncture Instead of A Total Shoulder Replacement with Anthony Von der Muhll, DAOM Is it possible to avoid or postpone orthopedic surgery with acupuncture? Can you help patients with extensive soft tissue damage regain full range of motion and strength?Yes. Yes you can! Listen in as Anthony walks me through a case where he helps his patient avoid a total shoulder replacement. In this episode….ACU-045 I remember treating a case during my internship where after a couple orthopedic tests I suspected that my patient had torn his meniscus. It was a great opportunity to practice my new set of advanced orthopedic skills and my patient responded well, but after a couple of weeks he had pain again. Unfortunately, I did not get to see the treatments through because the semester ended, but I have wondered how it might have concluded many many times. Can you really treat a patient with substantial soft tissue damage that would otherwise require surgery? Can you treat in a way that facilitates the body’s healing mechanisms so much that the patient achieves pain free normal range of motion? Does the structure damage change or is someone just miraculously free of pain? In this episode Dr.Anthony Von der Muhll, DAOM walks me through a pretty unbelievable case of exactly that. You don’t want to miss this episode! this episode is a little long, so here are some rough time jumps for you

20 Dec 2022 | ACU-046 How To Build A Company Everyone Loves with Co-CEO of Jane, Alison Taylor | 01:13:09
Listen in as I talk with Ali about how to create a company that when customers tell other people about it, they don’t say they “like” it. They say they “love” it.I think one of the toughest things about designing your future upon graduation is actually taking the time to do it. Especially after 3-4 years of no money coming in. Especially when the people around you seem to have a plan. Especially when you have had such focus on education and learning that you have lost touch with that person in the mirror. Perhaps you have no idea what you want in your immediate future. Or even 5 year future. But here’s the thing. That is exactly why you should take the time to explore. To ask yourself the tough questions. What DO you like? Those favorite patients you treated in student clinic? What made them so likeable? Are those traits or characteristics something you want to see more in your practice? What cases, treatments, modalities, and classes light you up from the inside? What do you find yourself talking about with regards to Chinese medicine? If you do the work in the beginning, if you envision the feel, the experience and the soul of your practice, it will act as a magnet for those defined elements that bring you joy. You will be creating an experience for your patients that no other practitioner can. Today’s GuestALISON TAYLOR, CO-CEO OF JANE Ali began her entrepreneurial journey by opening a multi-disciplinary healthcare clinic called Canopy in 2011. Running and owning a small business taught Ali the foundations of business along with a deep empathy for the life of a small business owner. In 2014, Ali and co-founder Trevor, launched a new business called Jane. Jane, a software built originally for Canopy that offered Online Booking and Electronic Charting, is now being used by over 100,000 practitioners around the world to run their practice. Ali continues to lead this scaling tech company as Co-CEO of a team of 350 staff on our mission to “help the helpers”.
