Hey there Bold One, Today, I'm excited to share a concept introduced to me by marketing expert, Sunny Lenarduzzi, on how to set short term, attainable goals on your road the the bigger goals -basically personal accountability for actors. The idea is to create smaller goals that you can actually achieve, rather than getting overwhelmed by the bigger picture. You know, like climbing a mountain - you need to see where your next handhold or foothold is. By breaking your goals into smaller, more attainable steps, you can achieve them more easily and make progress towards your bigger goals. The video includes some prompts to spark your imaginations and get you thinking about the things you'd like to achieve in the next 90 days, and how to rev up the power of your imagination to make sure you hit your goals. This is a way for you to be proactive about your career, gain confidence and be empowered. I'll also share my 90 Day Letter to myself, which was kinda... awkward. I'm not used to being so vulnerable, but I figure if I'm going to tell you not to be afraid to reveal your true desires then I shouldn't be either because the more vividly you can imagine yourself actually achieving your goals, the easier it will be to step into the scene. So, there you have it! The 90 day letter is all about accountability and breaking your goals into smaller, more attainable steps. It's a great way to make progress towards your bigger goals, while also feeling more in control of your career and life. I recently had the chance to interview director and cinematographer, Per Holmes, from  @HollywoodCameraWork . If you're at all familiar with his channel then you know just how jam packed with value this interview is. Per created a 17 volume video masterclass for directors called, "Directing Actors", but I got so much value out of it myself, I just had to talk to him. He is truly an "actors' director" and knows exactly how to communicate to get what he needs but more importantly for us, he had several mind-blowing tips on how to really make yourself stand out at an audition or on set. His goal with the course was to create a comprehensive guide that would work for everyone, without preconceived trademark acting techniques. Per believes that even if an actor stands up and just reads the lines without putting anything into them, a character materializes because the logic of the story is creating that character. The casting process and the director's role during the pre-production and production of the video series were also hot topics during our conversation. Per's biggest takeaway is that actors should take risks during auditions and do their oddball versions of the character. Directors are never just casting for one movie, and actors should not be afraid to show their opinions about the character. We also discussed result-oriented directing and how it can be helpful to actors if done correctly. My favorite quote from our interview? I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Diane Foy, a personal branding specialist, on my podcast. Diane's background is pretty diverse; she started as a photographer and makeup artist before becoming a trusted PR coach for creatives from various fields, including actors, musicians, and artists. Diane and I had a great conversation about the importance of personal branding in today's world, especially with the transition of media from traditional to digital platforms. The key, according to Diane, is understanding why you do what you do before starting PR or marketing. That means focusing on personal development and genuinely understanding and believing in your mission. Once you have that down, you can express yourself, your mission, and your uniqueness through stories and posts in a way that doesn't feel forced. That's what turns regular fans into superfans. We also talked about the concept of "superfans," who are not just loyal fans but potentially clients, customers, and even industry insiders. Diane stressed the importance of figuring out what sets you apart and communicating that through your stories. We also touched on the importance of having a robust press kit, which should include high-quality photographs, a compelling bio, talking points, and past media coverage. Lastly, we discussed the role of social media following. Diane pointed out that outlets today are not only interested in a large follower count but also active engagement with followers, which can increase opportunities for features and promotions in the media. Overall, it was a great conversation, and I learned a lot from Diane. In this episode of Act Bold, I had a fantastic chat with Abby Tozer. She's an incredibly talented actress, producer, and filmmaker. We all have things we believe... One of my beliefs centers around the necessity to change the power dynamic between yourself and the rest of the film industry because even though actors are above the line, they're still the lowest element on the totem pole when it comes down to it. One of the ways you can do this is by working your values and beliefs into your primal brand. What does that mean in people-speak? Find something that you can get behind in an authentic way that will give you another point to talk about (besides begging someone to view your showreel) when meeting with industry professionals. The best way for people to see you as an equal is to put yourself on equal footing and you can do that by showing them your "authority" in a certain area. For example, my friend, Angus McGruther, who I interviewed this week on the podcast, is an actor but he's also the co-director of THE DOWN UNDER FILM FESTIVAL in Berlin. For Angus, this was a game-changer on many levels. It set him apart from other actors It raised his confidence in his value in the film industry Filmmakers now go to him He's able to attend events like film festivals, premiers, & panels in a new capacity He's also networking with filmmakers on a casual basis which wouldn't have been possible for him if he were just approaching them as an actor. Those are just some of the ways that Angus is able to feel like he is an equal to the powers that be. Because, of course, we ARE all equal, even though it doesn't always feel that way. Maybe it will spark some ideas in that beautiful, bold head of yours. ;-)

This week I spoke with international casting director, Cassandra Han. She's an American who spent the first part of her career in New York then, like me, moved to Europe over 20 years ago and has worked her way up to become one of the most influential casting directors in Europe in English, German and Italian.
In our conversation, we covered everything from what makes one actor more bookable than another (hint: it's probably not what you think), to how to take your selftape from "meh" to "wow," to the hierarchy of hiring that goes on at major networks.

Over the past few years, film production in Spain has surged by 300% due to tax incentives, drawing production companies from around the world to capitalize on the favorable conditions. I recently spoke with Olivia Rogalla, the Spanish representative for Crew United, who shared valuable insights about the film industry in Spain and beyond. Now is an excellent time for native English-speaking actors in Europe, as Spain has become a major market for international co-productions. Olivia revealed the top three casting directors for US and UK co-productions, highlighting that English speakers aren't the only ones benefiting from this industry boom. Crew United, initially established in Germany, now encompasses regions such as Nordic, Baltic, Benelux, France, CIS, Balkan Peninsula, Turkey, Italy, and the Carpathian and Caucasian States, as well as Iberia, which represents Spain and its islands. Functioning as the IMDb of Europe, Crew United facilitates research on various aspects of film production, such as financing, castings, and more. This platform promotes cohesion and collaboration among European film scenes, ultimately benefiting the entire industry. Crew United has also revamped their casting portals by merging the best features of platforms like Schauspielervideos, Filmmakers, and Castupload to create stunning and user-friendly actor pages. As a result, open auditions are gradually becoming more accessible. Initially designed as a networking platform for film crew members, Crew United continues to improve and expand its offerings. In our conversation, Olivia and I covered various topics, such as headshot and showreel styles in Spain vs. other countries, casting announcement preferences of Casting Directors in Spain, and actors' unions in Spain. Luci Lenox is an award-winning casting director based in Spain, who has worked with big names like Netflix, Fox, Amazon, and BBC, as well as independent Spanish producers. In this episode of Act Bold, I sit down with actor Timothy Hoffmann, who recently acted in Apple TV's, "The Greatest Beer Run Ever". He interviews me about the ins and outs of starting an acting career in Germany. Timothy, who grew up in Germany and South Africa and speaks both English and German, is keen to learn more about the German film industry, which has been on the rise in recent years. During our conversation, Timothy asks me a range of questions about the German acting scene, including how to get an agent, auditioning, health insurance, retirement funds for actors, and the German equivalent of SAG. I share my experience of leaving my acting career in America and starting from scratch in Germany, as well as the differences between working on set in the USA and Germany. We also discuss the importance of language skills and having showreel material to prove them, as well as the impact of the pandemic on the film industry and how it has opened up opportunities for actors worldwide. Major streaming platforms like Netflix are now exposing audiences to different language series, films, and cultures, which is helping to break down barriers and make perceived differences less relevant. Although an acting career can feel non-linear, meaning our career trajectory is comprised of fits and starts, forward propulsions, standstills, and detours.
