Another week, another late relinquishment of three points by the Lions. This time against Leeds, who managed to conquer their fear and do it anyway by prizing an 87th daisy cutter equaliser following Jed Wallace’s 55th minute opener. Frustrating yes, but are we downcast? Not yet we’re not. But we are reserving rights on that if we don’t start creating more chances. Millwall’s manic last four minutes of injury time showed the way forward when we deserved better than to hit the woodwork and go very close to snatching a result. Following the interview that I conducted with Steve Turner, Assistant General Secretary of Unite a few weeks ago, on the subject of the rise of the far right in society - and in football especially, I received a contact from the Millwall Division of the Democratic Football Lads Alliance. They asked if it might be possible to have an opportunity to reply and to outline what the DFLA is, as well as what it stands for.  Millwall fans being what they are, the preliminary conversations were friendly but direct.  I said up front that I would not carry any Islamophobic nor unlawful language. And interestingly, I didn’t have to because the conversation didn’t go there. Some might find that surprising, but there we are. In fact in many ways, the discussion covered what I would term working class issues such as failures of government, local councils and what we might call the ‘establishment’. Subjects which many across the political spectrum would find common cause with. This surprised me if I am honest. Some might find these words naive, others might say that I have been duped. But I will speak as I find. Clearly there are areas of disagreement. I make no apology for remaining a supporter of anti-racism and trade unionism itself and please do not ask me to support the likes of Donald Trump, Nigel Farage and the others.  The edit that you hear is an agreed version, deleting traditional style swearing, off topic subjects which were not relevant (such as Trump) and heated sections where too many voices were speaking at once. Whether you agree or disagree with the DFLA, this remains an interesting conversation in my opinion. Well the dream isn’t entirely over following this highly professional win by Fulham, but Millwall are now looking at both Derby and Middlesbrough’s results ahead of next Saturday’s CRUNCH trip to the Riverside Stadium.  After the incredible first half performance by the Lions, in which somehow the Whites survived a string of chances and questionable refereeing decisions, does this Millwall squad have the fire in the belly to go to Teeside and get a result next week? Whatever the outcome, this roller-coaster ride of a season has been incredible and the applause for the team as they left the Zampa Road pitch last night speaks volumes for the mutual respect between players and fans. So breath again dear listeners, I will confess that when I got back to the car and checked the latest score from the Hawthorns, the 0-1 to Rotherham scoreline sorely tested my faith in the Lions ability to stay in the Championship. In the end however, it all worked out okay as late goals for the Baggies sank the Millers and confirmed our second tier status for another season. As this week's show mentions however, survival raises as many questions as relegation might have answered. Just as in life, so too in the Championship, the person or organisation that stands still is in reality moving backwards. So a summer clear out and rebuilding for August is now surely a priority for Neil Harris - presuming he stays in post of course ... In this edition of the Achtung! Millwall ‘random fixture from the past’ series, our eye falls upon some ancient black and white TV footage, to be found on You Tube at https://youtu.be/wm5x_LzqM18 Sixty years ago, Millwall were playing in the newly created Division Four https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_League_Fourth_Division - the grainy, low level images make a fascinating ‘time trip’ back to a very different looking era.  Which channel would have shown this game? The flagship BBC Match of the Day show did not start until the mid-1960s. So judging by the commentator, who sounds very much like Kenneth Wolstenholme of 1966 fame, this must have been the precursor ’Sports Special’ which ran from 1955 to 1963 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_football_on_television The single camera team shot the game seemingly from above the managers’ dugouts, giving an intimate feeling to the event.  The sight of kids running on to the pitch after each goal meeting with the stern, ‘headmaster-ish’ disapproval of Wolstenholme, who makes a ‘something must be done’ comment. And something would indeed ‘be done’, but not for another 25 years until the post Heysel and Hillsborough era, when the game would (for better or worse), leave this era behind. A new series in which Millwall fan and journalist Neil Fissler discusses two early Millwall Athletic pioneers - Bill Bryant and Bob Hunter - with yours truly ... SHOW NOTES Bill Bryant, 1899-1986 William Ingram (Bill) Bryant was born in Ghent, Belgium on 01 March 1899. He was a full England International as well as an Amateur International. He won his only full England cap on 21 May 1925, in a friendly against France in Paris. England won the match 3 – 2, and Bryant played the full 90 minutes. A centre half, he plied his trade with Clapton and Millwall. He was a Clapton player at the time of his full International call up. William was the Clapton captain for the 1924/25 F.A. Amateur Cup Final against Southall, held ironically at The Den, Millwall, home of the team he was soon to join. Clapton won the game 2 – 1, thus retaining the trophy they had won a year earlier, when Bill was also a member of the victorious Clapton team. He left Clapton to join Millwall in 1925 and played 132 games for “The Lions”, scoring 30 goals before returning to Clapton in 1931. William Ingram Bryant died on 21 January 1986, in Witham, Essex aged 86. Millwall 1925-31 140 apps in all comps - 30 goals Bob Hunter 1860-1933 Millwall manager 1918-33 ( longest tenure in the job) Millwall club trainer 1897-1918 Originally from Govan, spent many years at Montrose FC in Scotland Built reputation as a runner and coach - winning many prizes Known as an organizer of athletic events - continued on the Isle of Dogs Took charge in 1918 Developed a side strong enough to finish 3rd in Division 3 South 1923-24, 1925-26 & 1926-27 before promotion as champions in 1927-28 Shrewd singer of players including Richard Parker 1924 and Jack Cock 1927 who scored twice in a 9-1 win over Coventry 1932-33 - 7th in Division Two - although Hunter died in office aged 73, the only Millwall manager ever to do so. A fighting point on the road for the Lions at highly placed Cardiff City.
