So plug in those batteries, ask the bartender for a Diet Coke and let’s talk second shooting.
004 Wedding Recap 3/17/23 -- The Ballroom at Ellis Preserve
00:28:31
Join me in this "Save, Delete, Dodge, & Burn" wedding recap episode where I discuss:
--Save: what went well --Delete: what didn't go so well --Dodge: what I'd like to do more of --Burn: what I'd like to do less of
I start with the timeline leading up to the wedding, the gameplan, expectations, and then afterwards I talk about how it actually went down the day of.
In this wedding we had some easy logistics (groom prep was right next door to the venue), some slightly inconvenient weather (the chilliest part of the day was during the outdoor first look and bridal party portraits, when it also decided to drizzle), some bird poop in a bridal bouquet, a really nice couple, a tight ceremony space that needed light stands, candles that were constantly being knocked over, a great venue coordinator, missing dinners, and we wrapped up the night eating cake with our hands!

In this wedding we had some trickier logistics, the prep and ceremony were in New Jersey, and the reception was in Pennsylvania, about 50 miles away. It all worked out. I do an "in the car" recap immediately after the reception and then check in again a day later once I've reviewed the photos and gathered some more thoughts.

In this episode we discuss an intimate Monday wedding in Philadelphia where I'm the primary shooter. We had a loose timeline, a Bride and Groom I'd never met, bright direct sun, and a fabulous second shooter. We started at The Notary Hotel, went to LOVE Park, City Hall, and ended up at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) for an intimate ceremony.

In this episode we discuss a Friday wedding where I'm shooting for another photographer. It's me, another photographer, and a videographer. We have a dead mouse, mirrored sunglasses, a few raindrops, and a little bit of drama. We start at The Hilton, head to the beautiful Marian Coffin Gardens for portraits and then Hockessin Memorial Hall for the ceremony and reception.
009 Bar Mitzvah Recap 5/6/23 -- Moulin in Philadelphia

In this episode we discuss a Bar Mitzvah at Moulin in Philly where I'm shooting for another photographer. It's me, two other photographers, and another company had a couple of videographers. We have a lot of energy, three off-camera flashes, and plenty of snowboard centerpieces.

In this episode I talk about a massive heartburn attack I had on the way to the wedding. Then we discuss a wedding at Historic Ashland where I shot with a photographer I've second shot for three other times. She has a different style than the off-camera flash photographers I've been working with a lot recently. She's a master at posing and creating a great experience for her clients, their friends and family, and loves a light and bright look to her photos.
011 Second Hand Speak: an interview with Kayleen Nyshell, a Chicago area wedding photographer
00:55:40
On today's episode I speak with Kayleen Nyshell, a Chicago area-based photographer specializing in couples, engagements, weddings, and family portraits.
If she's not out taking photos you can catch her grabbing a beer with friends, hanging out with family, or cuddled up on the couch with her two dogs and her husband. She got her first "real" camera in March of 2021, and her first second-shooting opportunity later that year. She already has 15 (!) of her own weddings and two elopements booked for this year.
We discuss how she learned to use her camera and how she's marketed herself on social media, as well as how she gets clients so comfortable in front of her camera. Kayleen found Cassidy Lynne and Katelynn James on YouTube to be instrumental in mastering the fundamentals. She also gives a ton of credit to Kailee Rei of Kailee Rei Photography for taking a chance on her as a second shooter. Follow Kailee at @kaileereiphotography
Kayleen is booking weddings in the Chicago area as well as destination weddings, and elopements.

In this episode I talk about Ruby's Bat Mitzvah on a beautiful June day! I'm shooting for the awesome Jackie Bayne of Love Shack Photo. We had gorgeous weather, an awesome family, a pretty laidback venue, and some table-flipping pre-teen cousins.

In this episode I talk about a backyard wedding in Fleetwood, PA at a true party house that may or may not have run out of alcohol before 4pm. We also had bright sun, a nice breeze, very few spots with open shade, and a happy couple.
014 Second Hand Speak: an interview with Mike Ragusa, a Philadelphia area wedding photographer
01:12:44
On today's episode I speak with Mike Ragusa, a Philadelphia area photographer who has been shooting professionally for over specializing in portrait and commercial photography. He’s been second shooting for a little over a year now.
We discuss how he started second shooting, and also how he “botched” his first wedding as a second shooter for the co-founder of ShootWithMe, and how he rebounded afterwards. He went on to shoot with Nathan Desch again and has worked repeatedly with many photographers and studios. He has a reputation for getting booked for a lot of weddings in a short amount of time and is well-liked by his fellow photographers. He consistently asks for feedback from the lead photographers after their weddings.
His preferred style is “dark and moody”, and he’s proficient with off-camera flash. His favorite part of the day is prep. And find out why receptions used to be his least favorite part of a wedding day.
He gets most of his second-shooting gigs from ShootWithMe, the Speakeasy Facebook group, and word of mouth.
Mike shoots with Sony cameras, Godox flashes, and MagMod accessories and modifiers.
His favorite lens is the Sigma 24-70/2.8 art series.
As of June of 2023 he has a 5-star rating and 22 reviews on ShootWithMe, as well as badges for “Favorited User”, “Most Booked”, and “Repeat Hire”.
Mike is currently booking weddings and would love to book more outdoor weddings and elopements. You can check out his work here:

I start with the timeline leading up to the event, the gameplan, expectations, and then afterwards I talk about how it actually went down on the big day.
In this episode I talk about Associate shooting for another photographer. It's my first time working for her, and I was the only photographer. I got a little nervous when there wasn't an updated timeline and then there were some hiccups regarding payment, but it all worked out in the end.
For the wedding day, we had super humid and stormy weather, but we made it through the outdoor ceremony. The family and bridal party were very nice, we were on track with the timeline, and made up some time with a shorter ceremony time and moving quickly through family and bridal party portraits.
We didn't have a ton of picturesque spots with quality lighting, but we made the best of what was available. Posing is going better, but I still want work on it.
Join me in this "Save, Delete, Dodge, & Burn" Wedding recap episode where I discuss:

I start with the timeline leading up to the event, the gameplan, expectations, and then afterwards I talk about how it actually went down on the big day.
In this episode I talk about a downtown Philly wedding at The Lucy where the lead photographer got Covid and had to make a replacement, Broad Street (where the hotel and venue were located), was closed for a festival, I got annoyed with parking garages, the Uber driver couldn't get to the actual hotel, there were FIVE videographers, a 9-minute ceremony, and a premature petal cannon. And of course, two broken cylinder candles. During formal portraits we were able to make up 30 minutes and get the timeline back on track, and even ahead of schedule, nailed the portraits, navigated the videographers, and got their requested nighttime timelapse photo on Broad Street.
We took photos at Rittenhouse Square, the Art Museum, The Lucy and Broad Street.
017 Wedding Recap 7/17/23 -- Backyard in West Chester

Join me in this "Save, Delete, Dodge, & Burn" Wedding recap episode where I discuss:

I start with the timeline leading up to the event, the gameplan, expectations, and then afterwards I talk about how it actually went down on the big day.
In this episode I talk about a DIY wedding in West Chester that was held at the bride's parent's home. Due to the weather it was moved inside, but we used the tent for a lot of the family formals. Everybody was lovely, the officiant overstepped a little, and once again we had someone questioning backlit formals!
And I learn my lesson AGAIN about not discussing money upfront!
018 Wedding Recap 7/29/23 -- The Franklin Institute

I start with the timeline leading up to the event, the gameplan, expectations, and then afterwards I talk about how it actually went down on the big day.
In this episode I'm finally reunited with Dave after four months and I talk about a Philly wedding at The Franklin Institute where the ceremony was held in the planetarium, the limo was 20 minutes late, it was SUPER HOT, there were carpenter bees in the bridesmaid bouquets, the bride vetoed all of the portraits in the museum and on the roof, the venue banned the CO2 cannon, the Groom thanked us in his speech and I had a relatively easy parking experience.
We took photos at Rittenhouse Square, Lombard Street, City Hall/Broad Street and the Franklin Institute.
019 Second Story: My First Time Associate Shooting
00:22:32
Join me for the debut episode of "Second Story" where I tell the tale of my first time Associate Shooting.
We're gonna talk about surprises, flat tires, unshared Pinterest inspo pictures and more!
This was my first time associate shooting and it may have been the photographer's first time hiring an associate shooter. Lessons were learned and tires were patched.
This wedding took place at Catalpa Grove in Lakewood, PA.

In this episode I'm second shooting with Pat for the 12th time. There aren't a ton of details going into the wedding, but I know the couple is shy and don't like to be the center of attention. We encounter some ceremony challenges with the pergola, the bride has some t-shirt tan lines, the groom is in charge of the centerpieces and it feels like every family member wants to take their own pictures during family formals!
All of the wedding photos were taken at Normandy Farm in Blue Bell.
021 Wedding Recap: 8/26/23 The Loft at Landis Creek

In this episode I'm second shooting with Pat for the 13th time. I have everybody's name, but no times on the timeline! The couple is sweet, but we've got dramatic parents, challenging light, a groomsmen who has his own timeline, and the Groom's side almost got skipped during family formals.
All of the wedding photos were taken at Loft at Landis Creek.

This episode starts out with a suspicion I'm being scammed, but after talking with one of the owners of ShootWithMe, I decide to forge ahead. The wedding budget was huge and the Bride's Grandmother planned the whole thing. And for photos, the bride just wants candids, motion blur, and black and white photos.
For this wedding we shot at Loews, St. John's Church, Race Street Pier, and Ballroom at the Ben.
023 Wedding Recap: 9/16/23 Loch Aerie Mansion in Malvern

This wedding is super close to my house, and this is my first time shooting there. It's Megan's first time as well. We luck out with amazing vendors and the family is great. We shot the Bride's sister's wedding last May. The groom prep area has some tricky lighting, and I have another monster boutonniere to wrestle with, and there's a wedding-crashing baby, and a surprise replacement for a plus one.
For this wedding we shot everything at Loch Aerie Mansion in Malvern.

This was a backyard wedding in Pottstown. The weather was iffy and the moonshine was flowing. There were gorgeous candles, tons of roses, boob tape, and not enough chairs for the ceremony.
The venue was the Bride's Grandparents former dairy farm in Pottstown.

This was a beautiful fall day, with just a little bit of rain. I was Associate shooting for a studio and had a second shooter working with me. He started at a nearby hotel for Groom Prep and I had Bride Prep on-site, so we had their First Look, wedding party, family formals, and then the ceremony and reception all at the Manayunk Brewing Company.

This was an absolutely beautiful fall day. We started at the Loew's Hotel in Philadelphia for bride and groom prep, did bride and groom portraits on the 33rd floor and the stairs, we also went to Merchant's Exchange and Broad Street for the iconic City Hall shot. The ceremony and the reception was at the Crystal Tea Room, which is always gorgeous.

This weekend it poured on Friday and Saturday, and our wedding was on Sunday. It was a beautiful day. I shot their rehearsal/welcome dinner the night before and got to know them a little bit, which definitely makes it nice on the wedding day because not only had I met the Bride and Groom, I had met their closest friends and family. Our biggest challenge is a very dark dance floor and the groom doesn't want to get dressed until the last minute.
The Bride keeps saying, "we've both been married before, this is just a second wedding", and then put on one of the most beautiful weddings I've been to. All the family members were excited for them and it was a great day.

This wedding was all around a great time. We had great weather, pretty easy logistics, beautiful light, wonderful families, an easy bridal party, and a truly lovely bride and groom. The only snag was the videographer's camera getting run over.

00:32:03
Join me for a captivating wedding recap in this podcast episode as I delve into the highs and lows of the memorable event. I'll be covering what went smoothly, what presented challenges, elements I'd like to incorporate more in the future, and aspects I'd prefer to minimize.
Beginning with a detailed timeline leading up to the event, I'll discuss the strategic game plan, set expectations, and then provide a post-event analysis of how everything unfolded on the big day.
This downtown Philadelphia wedding proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions. The journey commenced on a positive note, but excitement escalated during Groom prep when my Apple Airtag indicated that my bag of flashes was making its way around Philadelphia. Amidst the First Look, we encountered the delightful fragrance of female Ginkgo tree nuts, adding a unique touch to the experience. Fortunately, luck was on our side as we managed to avoid rain.
The narrative unfolds with Bride and Groom preparations at Hotel Monaco, a picturesque First Look at the 18th Century Garden, and a joyous reception at The Downtown Club by Cescaphe. Tune in for an insightful and entertaining recap of this extraordinary wedding day.
