09 Sep 2024 | How to stop overthinking - tools, techniques, insights and powerful recognitions: Andrew Sewell | 01:35:22
Are you familiar with worrying about the future or dwelling on the past? Then this conversation is for you. It's all about ways to free yourself from being caught up in the head - and stop your mind from using you, and get back to being able to use your mind, which is after all a wonderful tool (but a terrible master!). We all love it when the mind quietens - when in flow or looking at a beautiful sunset for example - but struggle when it fires back up, and make a mistake by then trying to control or suppress thoughts. We discuss simple techniques and powerful tools that aren't about futile control and explore deep game-changing insights and recognitions.

12 Jul 2024 | 'Success' Is Overrated - but Flow Isn't: Adrian Chiles | 00:10:37
"I just admire people who are happy in their own skin"
It can be so easy to put so-called successful people on a pedestal, but the truth is many of them are driven by a sense of disquiet and fear. That’s not to cast judgement – it’s just a fact, as Adrian Chiles told me. The former Daybreak and One Show presenter hosts a radio show on 5Live where he interviews high performers, and that is certainly a phenomenon he has noticed too. So don’t buy into the hype that successful people are special, cos they’re not. And being successful is not the recipe for happiness. Flow on the other hand, when we lose our sense of self as we get absorbed in an activity that is enjoyable for its own sake, is inherently satisfying, which speaks volumes when you really explore why – as I have done elsewhere and in my book.
My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. In it, I seek to challenge our ideas about 'success', and where peace, joy and fulfilment are truly to be found.

04 Nov 2024 | Professor Tim Spector's Six Food Principles For a Healthy Life | 01:15:01
How Diet, Diversity, and Lifestyle Shape Your Microbiome and Well-Being. In this episode, I sit down with Tim Spector to dive into the fascinating world of the gut microbiome and its powerful role in our overall health. Tim breaks down how our diets directly shape our gut health, emphasising the benefits of a diverse, plant-rich diet and aiming for 30 different plants a week. We explore why ultra-processed foods can harm the microbiome, while foods like kefir and sauerkraut can give it a healthy boost. Tim also shares insights on how lifestyle factors—like stress and eating speed—impact gut health and discusses the potential benefits of time-restricted eating to support the microbiome and reduce inflammation. We discuss:
Overview of the gut microbiome and its importance for health
Tim's personal health scare that led him to focus on gut health research
Insights from the twins study on the role of gut microbes in disease and ageing
The significant impact of gut health on mental and physical health
The detrimental effects of ultra-processed foods and misleading health claims
The complex relationship between sugar, artificial sweeteners, stress, and gut health
The benefits of incorporating fermented foods into the diet and how
The importance of eating a diverse range of plant-based foods for gut health
The advantages of time-restricted eating and slowing down during meals

07 Jun 2024 | How To Communicate Clearly: BBC master communicator Ros Atkins | 00:08:34
If you want to get along with other people, and therefore be able to get ahead, being able to communicate clearly is a fundamental skill. In this age of chatbots and remote work, one thing that cannot be outsourced to machines are decent communication skills. And yet, so many people in so many industries speak in a language and jargom that makes it difficult to actually understand what they are saying. And that is a big mistake. Simplicity is key, as the BBCs master communicator Ros Atkins can explain

29 Nov 2024 | Redefining Success: The Power of Flow - with Adrian Chiles | 00:09:50
What does it truly means to be content in your own skin? It's tempting to put so-called "successful" people on a pedestal, but the reality is often much more complicated. Many high achievers are driven by inner turmoil. Adrian Chiles, broadcaster and former host of The One Show, shares insights from his conversations with high performers on BBC Radio 5 Live, many of whom have also appeared on this podcast - from Jonny Wilkinson to Ronnie O'Sullivan. We explore why chasing traditional success often falls short of delivering happiness and why the state of flow - the state of full immersion in the present - is a key to genuine satisfaction, as well as high performance.
My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. In it, I seek to challenge our ideas about 'success', and where peace, joy and fulfilment are truly to be found.

13 Sep 2024 | How to harness 'vasopressin bonding' for real intimacy - and challenging the 'anxious-avoidant attachment trap' | 00:10:37
What attachment style are you - anxious, avoidant or secure? Our attachment style forms as a result of our relationships with our parents and primary caregivers. In this bitesize episode, we are focussing on how to enjoy the honeymoon phase over and over again - through vasopressin bonding. This is vital for developing true long-lasting intimacy, and is key to understand, particularly if you tend to have either an anxious or avoidant attachment style.

03 May 2021 | Self-awareness: Danny Kerry | 01:10:13
Reflecting on your strengths and weaknesses to grow as a person in sport, business and life.
Kerry is one of Britain's best coaches, leading Team GB's women's hockey team to gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016. He's now leading GB's men to Tokyo 2021.
Rio was Kerry's third Games as GB hockey coach. His first was at Beijing 2008, after which he endured a chastening post-Games debrief in which his methods were criticised.
He used what was uncomfortable feedback to challenge himself and grow. Ultimately it enabled him to create not just a winning team, but one with meaningful values at their core.

03 May 2021 | How our environment shapes us: John McAvoy | 01:39:56
Judging behaviour but not the person with the ex-armed robber reformed through sport in high-security prison.
Having grown up around some of the most notorious criminals in the country, McAvoy spent ten years in the UK's highest security prisons – where he had an epiphany that transformed his outlook and identity.
McAvoy – now a Nike-sponsored Iron Man athlete – proves that a leopard can change its spots, and that while we can judge someone’s behaviour, we may want to reconsider being too quick to judge the person, because the environment we find ourselves in has a profound impact on our life choices.
I would be hugely grateful if you could find time to leave DTMTS a rating (ideally 5* and a kind review if you have time). It would make a huge difference.

01 Jul 2024 | Olympic Champions are NORMAL people, 'Success' does not actually change you in any fundamental way: Eve Muirhead | 00:49:04
My guest this week is a titan in the world of British sport – Eve Muirhead, who of course won curling gold for Team GB at the last winter Olympics. Curling is that sport that absolutely grips the attention when the winter Olympics is on – and then doesn’t get quite the same level of coverage the rest of the time. This episode is really about understanding that gold medal winners – or successful people of any category for that matter – are still just normal people. Achieving success or fame or accumulating wealth does not actually change you in any deep fundamental way, although not everyone sees this clearly. I have been aware of many people who have taken their success personally and it has gone to their heads and created an inflated identity – but it’s a bit tragic when that happens, and is all really smoke and mirrors. And Eve definitely isn’t one such person. We also discuss getting over a fear of failure, and prioritising your own wellbeing – and much more besides.

03 May 2021 | Obsession: Jonny Wilkinson | 00:54:45
Letting go of control and self-importance to find peace of mind with Jonny Wilkinson.
While we explore the art of letting go of control in order to find peace of mind, we talk about the concept of pressure and how it is created by thought, not by external factors.
Wilkinson opens up about the emptiness he felt after winning the Rugby World Cup, and what that reveals about our false belief that happiness is something that will happen at some time in the future. We also discuss how his sense of "self" disappeared as he kicked the World Cup winning drop goal in 2003.

23 Aug 2024 | Top Neuroscientist: Being sedentary is killing you - here's why you need to embrace consistent low grade exercise like walking THROUGHOUT the day | 00:14:29
Being sedentary is a killer. Our ancestors walked 15 plus miles a day most days of the week. Not for its health benefits, but because it was weaved into their day naturally. The problem now is that our lives are designed to be sedentary - think cars, desks and sofas - and so we have to be very conscious about fitting in regular lower level exercise like walking THROUGHOUT the day. Just going to the gym after work won't cut it - in fact it may be counterproductive. Here's what we talk about in this episode
The five key personality traits negatively impacted by being sedentary
The sedentary component for depression
Which TYPES of anxiety are ameliorated by reducing a sedentary lifestyle
Mobility and its effect on inflammation
The relationship between movement and cortisol
The negative impact of being sedentary and then working out in the gym in a one-hour burst

22 Aug 2021 | The Dangers of Digital: Cal Newport | 01:20:45
How smartphones and social media may be making us more anxious and distracted - and what to do about it. Cal Newport is the author of two seminal books: 'Deep Work' and 'Digital Minimalism'. He argues that our ability to perform undistracted work on something cognitively demanding is a vital skill to train. However, the ability to perform 'deep work' is increasingly rare - not least because of the impact of smartphones and social media. Cal says that IGen - people born between 1995 and 2012 - have been particularly impacted, because they came of age at a time when smartphone and social media use was ubiquitous. The rates of mental health issues in that generation are reported to have been rapidly and markedly impacted. Part of the problem - Cal argues - is that for the first time in human history, people don't ever have to be alone with their thoughts and feelings. With a smartphone, you always have a distraction tool within reach, and that's a problem. Without having to experience solitude in the same way as every preceding generation, people are struggling to experience uncomfortable thoughts and feelings - and grow as human beings.

03 May 2021 | Walking: Professor Shane O'Mara | 00:56:56
Most of us do it - but almost all of us don’t do it enough. Yes, we're talking about walking. It's hardly news that we are, as a species, too sedentary, and the fact is that we were not designed to spend as much time as we do sitting or slouching around. Walking is what we are designed to do, and our ability to walk long distances helped humans become the dominant species on earth. It helps to protect and repair organs, aids digestion and can turn back the ageing of our brains. Not only that but it's simple and it's good for us - so why aren't we doing it enough? Neuroscientist Shane O’Mara is on a one-man mission to convince us to up our step count. He says that doing so will benefit our muscles, brains and waistline, that our mood will improve and our stress levels will fall - and walking has also been scientifically proven to aid creativity. So if you’re stuck on a problem, going for a brisk walk could well help you on your way to solving your conundrum.

One theme that has arisen time and again on this podcast is the experience of flow: when we lose ourselves in whatever it is that we are doing.
Several sportspeople have spoken about the experience of "me" not being there in such moments. But what is that "me" that seems to disappear?
That’s a big question and here to help address it is Rupert Spira, a philosopher interested in the nature of reality, and the nature of consciousness.
Nothing is more obvious and undeniable than the fact that we are conscious. Now in this case when we say conscious, we mean simply 'being aware'.
But, there is something called the hard problem of consciousness. It is our inability to explain how a lump of tissue or matter, in other words our brain, creates consciousness.
Rupert argues that we are looking in the wrong direction. This is a counterintuitive view, and we are not arguing that it’s true, but before you immediately dismiss it, here is a quote from one of the most important physicists of the 20th century – the Nobel prizewinner Max Planck.
"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness."

01 Jun 2024 | A New Way of Being | 00:01:53
A New Way of Being is about recognising that we are all innately enough. Most of us don’t always feel that way, but it’s an illusion largely created by identifying with the outdated voice in our heads.
And so much stuff out there, including much of the so-called high performance culture, comes from a place of inadequacy. If we are not enough as we are, of course we will expand vast amount of energy trying to BECOME enough in the future. But that’s a trap. We cannot become what we already are, and the search obscures this recognition.
Does this mean we become passive, lazy, indifferent and don’t look to do big and important things in the world? Of course not. But crucially the intention is different. We are not seeking to prove our worth. We are choosing to express it. It’s a whole different energy and way of being.
So, I have decided to bring all my platforms under one banner - A New Way of Being. So that’s my podcast, YouTube and Substack newsletter. The final chapter of an epic trilogy of rebrands! The podcast started out as Don’t Tell Me The Score on the BBC, using sport to explore life’s bigger questions. Those episodes are still in the back catalogue, so tuck in. Then onto Life Lessons – broadening the scope from just sport.
Time for a new way of being, don’t you think?

15 Aug 2021 | The healing power of hard conversations: Ed Jackson | 01:10:01
Why self-sacrificing and people-pleasing can be selfish, while looking after yourself can be selfless.
Ed Jackson suffered a devastating accident after diving into a shallow swimming pool and breaking his neck in 2017. He made a miraculous recovery despite being told he would never walk again. Ed first appeared on the show two years ago but this episode is very different. In this conversation we go deep exploring what Ed and his wife Lois have learned since his accident in 2017.
They learnt to embrace hard and honest comversations in the transitional period after Ed's accident - and have lessons to share on that that can benefit anyone.
We also discuss the importance of letting life happen and not being overly fixated on specific outcomes, and much more besides.
If you could share this episode with anyone who might benefit from hearing it – we would both be incredibly grateful.

01 Aug 2024 | How To Find Awe And Enjoy Its Huge Benefits From Spending Time In Nature | 00:11:29
'Awe Is The Emotion Of Self-Transcendence' - Jonathan Haidt
Dacher Keltner has spent over 20 years studying happiness, and he thinks the secret to a good life is 'finding awe'. Awe is a state when we feel deeply connected to something bigger than ourselves, and in the process our sense of self (the idea we have about who we are) disappears, or at the very least shrinks dramatically.
One of the best ways to experience awe is in nature, which Dacher and I discuss in this episode.

23 Sep 2024 | Reflective Awareness: Embracing Our Shadow Through What We Judge in Others - Dr John Demartini | 01:02:39
This conversation starts with a truly eye-opening insight: our judgments of others often reveal traits in ourselves that we haven’t fully recognised and owned. Internationally renowned behaviour expert Dr John Demartini identified 4,628 different human behavioural traits, and recognised that we all possess both all of them - positive and negative. This is about what he calls reflective awareness – that we are simply being shown by others what we aren’t loving in ourselves, which keeps us from wholeness.
We also talk about
What emotional intelligence and authenticity really are.
Why aligning our actions with our core values is key.
Recognising the interconnectedness of all life.
How acknowledging and embracing both sides of existence—like peace and conflict—helps us return to wholeness.
Recognising hat success is deeply personal, defined by our own values, and that living in alignment with those values is what brings true fulfillment.
How resisting what is creates all psychological suffering, and what to do instead

21 Oct 2024 | Flow, Fulfilment, and Finding Balance: Dominic Thiem | 01:04:08
Why success alone doesn’t bring happiness but truly embracing the now can be transformative. This is a fascinating conversation with one of my favourite tennis players of the last few decades – Dominic Thiem, who is retiring this week in Vienna.
Dominic explains what it’s like to reach the pinnacle of success, and then realise… it didn’t bring the fulfilment it promised. After winning the US Open in 2020, he found himself grappling with a sense of emptiness, which prompted a period of deep introspection and growth.
We talk about the myth of perpetual positivity, dealing with the critical voice in the head and the importance of finding flow—not just in sport but in life. Dominic also shares his insights into mindfulness, meditation, and why smartphones and social media may have hobbled elite athletes born in the 1990s.
We also discuss:
Challenges of competing against the "Big Three" of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic
Importance of stress management as an elite athlete
Thiem's journey of finding flow states and the joy of playing, beyond just chasing results
The profound impact of winning the 2020 US Open and the subsequent period of readjustment
Being impacted by Eckhart Tolle's 'The Power of Now'
Discovering the power of mindfulness, meditation and a philosophical perspective on life
Concerns about the influence of technology and social media on the next generation of athletes
Insights on finding meaning, balance and fulfillment beyond external success

30 Dec 2024 | Digital Overload: Deep Work and Digital Minimalism with Cal Newport | 01:19:57
Smartphones and social media are making us more anxious, distracted, and disconnected. In this episode, I revisit my conversation with Cal Newport, author of Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. Cal explores how our increasing reliance on smartphones and social media is eroding our ability to focus, perform deep work, and even be alone with our thoughts.
He explains how the iGen generation (born 1995–2012) has been particularly affected, with alarming rates of mental health issues linked to the constant presence of digital distractions. For the first time in human history, we can avoid solitude entirely—yet this avoidance comes at a huge cost.
As I reflect on these themes, I also want to share my FREE online course on beating burnout and finding flow. The tools and strategies I teach have transformed my life and are designed to help you reduce overwhelm, improve focus, and find flow, peace and creativity:

Why learning to face uncomfortable feelings is vital for our wellbeing.
Clarke Carlisle, once crowned "Britain's brainiest footballer", has had well publicised mental health difficulties and issues with drink and gambling.
He believes his issues with drink, gambling and other activities stemmed from an inability to sit with painful emotions.
In this episode, we discuss patterns passed down through the generations and how we form negative beliefs about ourselves.
We talk about not automatically identifying with thoughts that pop into our mind, and learning to sit with emotions and choosing to respond rather than react.
Clarke also shares a brilliant way of teaching children 'the language of emotions'

24 Jan 2025 | Why positive thinking is overrated and what to do instead: US Open winner Dominic Thiem | 00:09:43
“Always think positively" sounds like good advice - on the surface. But is it really possible, or even desirable? In this episode, Dominic Thiem and I explore why chasing constant positivity isn’t the answer.
Novak Djokovic weighed in on this idea in a 2024 interview, explaining why he doesn’t agree with the idea that we should always think positively. Novak's ability to acknowledge and allow challenging thoughts and feelings, and then recenter himself, is what makes him probably the 'mentally toughest player' in the history of the sport;.
Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, shares a similar perspective. I caught up with Dom just before his retirement last year, and his insights on this topic were particularly insightful.

04 Jul 2021 | Embracing patience: Matt Little - Sir Andy Murray's coach | 01:16:17
The importance of building strong foundations and not striving to reach your goal too quickly.
Matt Little has coached Andy Murray for 15 years, and is the longest standing member of his entourage.
He is a man who knows the importance of values, and of building strong foundations - rather than rushing to achieve success in the shortest time possible.
It is about paying your dues and enjoying the journey - taking the time to smell the roses along the way - and not jumping steps in your quest to reach your goal.
His new book is called 'the way of the tortoise' - and it outlines Matt's life philosophy, which we discuss in this episode.
We also discuss the importance of learning soft skills, living your values - and why slow and steady often wins the race in the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation - it is full of useful nuggets and I hope you do too.

07 Oct 2024 | Mastering Money: Breaking Free from Financial Stress with 'Money Mentor' Anna Brading | 01:03:03
In this episode, we tackle a subject that affects us all but remains somewhat taboo —money. Anna joins me to share her powerful journey from financial uncertainty to mastering her finances, and together, we explore how much headspace money takes up when we’re not in control of it. Financial stress can cloud our ability to think clearly, reduce our creativity, and drain our energy, but by understanding our relationship with money, we can free up that space for the things that matter most.
What we discuss:
How the mental load of financial stress weighs us down, and why building financial literacy can unlock creativity and fresh perspectives.
Anna’s personal story of escaping the paycheck-to-paycheck trap, and the actionable steps she used to regain control.
Why financial "drift" happens when we don't have a clear plan, and how you can take purposeful steps towards your financial goals.
Identifying and breaking through limiting beliefs around money, allowing you to cultivate a mindset that supports growth and possibility.
Practical strategies for budgeting, automating your finances, and diversifying your income—whether through investments, property, or starting your own business.
Throughout the conversation, Anna reminds us that money is just a tool. By creating healthier financial habits, you can reduce stress, reclaim your mental space, and open up new possibilities. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to improve their relationship with money and, ultimately, their quality of life.

04 Oct 2024 | Into the Bubble: How Fighter Pilots Stay Focused and Find Flow—And How You Can Too | 00:09:05
Fighter pilots are experts at developing the power of focus under pressure. Fighter pilot turned Head of UK Military Flying Training Rob Caine explains the powerful concept of "the bubble"—a state that helps block out distractions and allows for complete concentration on the task at hand. Whether you’re flying a jet, preparing for a presentation at work or just trying to focus at work, creating a bubble of focus is key to reaching your peak performance. We also discuss how the bubble helps us tap into a flow state, where our best work happens naturally and effortlessly.
Key topics include:
The Bubble: How fighter pilots use it to shut out distractions, maintain calm, and stay focused, even in the most demanding environments.
Finding Flow: How the bubble creates the perfect conditions for flow—a state where actions feel effortless, and peak performance just happens without force.
Expanding Your Bubble: The more experience you gain, the larger your bubble becomes—allowing you to manage distractions without losing focus.

06 Jun 2021 | Managing Difficult Thoughts and Feelings: Dr Russ Harris | 01:04:55
Why resisting and battling uncomfortable thoughts and feelings doesn't work, but acceptance and self-compassion does.
Dr. Russ Harris is the world's best-know teacher of Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT)
Experiencing emotions like anxiety is entirely normal. It is part of the human experience. If you DIDN'T experience them, then there may be a problem.
However, it is not unusual to believe we shouldn't experience uncomfortable feelings and thoughts, and so we are prone to resisting them, or distracting ourself from them..
Dr. Russ Harris explains that there is another - better - way. It is a paradoxical intervention - in that we are taught to lean towards the discomfort, not away from it.
The paradox is that when we stop battling to get rid of the thoughts and feelings, they have less power over us and pass more quickly.
And Russ shares some powerful 'defusion techniques' - which are brilliant for managing difficult thoughts and feelings in the moment, and double as a mindfulness tool too.

24 Jun 2024 | Recognising Your Attachment Style - and rethinking the 'Anxious-Avoidant trap': Relationship expert Adam Lane-Smith | 00:55:17
Do you know what attachment style you are? Whether you are secure, anxious, avoidant or a bit of a mix – your attachment style developed in childhood as a result of your relationships with your parents and primary caregivers, which then likely shapes what type of relationships you have for the rest of your life.
That is, unless you can become aware of an insecure attachment style, and work to heal it.
My guest is an attachment specialist Adam Lane Smith. In this episode you will learn about the different attachment styles - particularly the anxious and avoidant types, their impact on romantic relationships and why the 'anxious-avoidant trap' can be a blessing if you are willing to do the work, the scientific aspects of bonding and relationships, the roles of vasopressin and oxytocin in creating a sense intimacy as well as practical tips for improving emotional intimacy.

31 Jan 2025 | Overcome burnout and develop resilience - by doing nothing: Steve Magness | 00:08:11
“All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone” - Blaise Pascal. Rates of burnout and overwhelm are soaring and yet the advice tends to be push harder and exercise more. For people struggling with burnout this can lead to illness and a crash. On the contrary, we need to embrace stillness and simply being. Doing nothing is not easy for most people, yet it is what our nervous system's are crying out for, and it is the path to developing true resilience.

06 Jan 2025 | Beyond Burnout: Embracing Rest and Self-Compassion with Fiona Agombar | 01:07:22
How to Reconnect with Your Inner Wisdom and Find True Wellbeing.
At this time of New Year resolutions, it’s easy to fall into the trap of pushing harder and faster. But in a world already moving at breakneck speed, chronic stress, overwhelm, and burnout have become alarmingly common.
This episode offers a vital alternative: the power of rest. My guest, Fiona Agombar, is a yoga therapist, rest activist, and author of Breathe, Rest, Recover. Having experienced severe burnout herself as a high-flying business owner, Fiona knows firsthand the life-changing impact of embracing rest without shame or guilt. She shares how rest not only helps us recover but also reconnects us with our inner wisdom and reveals what we truly want from life.
We discuss the profound benefits of slowing down, tuning into the body, and practising self-compassion. Fiona also highlights practical ways to integrate rest into daily life, from conscious breathing and micro-breaks to managing "tech apnea"—the impact of constant screen use on breathing and stress levels. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone seeking to break free from the relentless pace of modern life.
Topics covered:
The concept of rest activism and why reintroducing rest and convalescence into modern life is essential.
Why people struggle to rest and the dangers of ignoring signs from our body.
How interoception and tuning into inner wisdom can aid in overcoming stress and burnout.
Fiona’s personal journey of healing from chronic illness through yoga and self-inquiry.
Practical strategies for rest and recovery, including conscious breathing and micro-breaks.
The effects of news consumption and technology on our wellbeing and mental health.

26 Aug 2021 | Life Lessons Lite : Amor Fati | 00:14:46
Amor fati means "a love of fate". The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche quoted it as his formula for human greatness.
In other words – whatever happens in your life – or whatever has happened in the past – accept it fully. Not begrudgingly and reluctanctly - but as if you had chosen it yourself. The question is - how? In this short episode we explore two ways of looking at it. Firstly, through the stoic approach - where everything is an opportunity to be or do your best. Ryan Holiday - author of 'The Obstacle is the way' - chips in to help on that front. The second way is by learning to distinguish between the 'thinking mind' and the 'aware mind', and learning to identify more with the latter and less with the former.

29 Aug 2021 | Making Good Choices: Josh Warrington | 01:20:57
Making good choices - even when you feel like you are missing out or not progresssing as quickly as you would like.
This is something Josh has done throughout his life, even in the face of peer pressure and frustration.
We also talk about getting perspective in your life, stopping complaining about things that are really unimportant in the big scheme of things and why having no regrets when you are older is something worth striving for.
He also shares some compelling stories about the power of the mind and in particular the power of visualisation.
Josh Warrington has arguably the most important fight of his career against Mauricio Lara on Saturday September 4th, at Headingly stadium.
It’s a rematch after Josh suffered a shock defeat to the Mexican in February, the first of his career.
We also discuss why switching off is so important – and why that was a big factor in his shock defeat to Lara during lockdown in February.

03 Sep 2021 | Life Lesson: Switching your brain computer off | 00:17:07
The importance of powering your brain down several times a day.
Sir John Kirwan - the All Black's legend who was knighted for services to mental health - shared this golden nugget with me.
His is a fantastic analogy - when your computer stops working and you ring IT - what do they advise you to do?
Switch it off and then turn it back on again!
It's something we all need to be doing - but with our brains. And scrolling through your phone doesn't count - we need to find activities that give our brain's a rest - or we risk burnout.

06 Sep 2021 | Embracing each moment like Roger Federer: Christopher Clarey | 00:40:45
What lessons can we take from the approach, attitude and outlook of Roger Federer?
Helping me answer that question is Christopher Clarey – arguably the top tennis journalist in the world. Chris has written a book called ‘the Master – the Brilliant career of Roger Federer’, in this episode we talk about what anyone can learn from the Swiss maestro – and Chris shares many stories to illustrate Federer's lessons – including around treating people with empathy and authenticity, taking care of your own business, planning spontaneity and time to recharge - and choosing to let go of disappointment and resentment. We also talk about what traits Federer took from his parents Robert and Lynette – and how they helped nurture his talent.
And crucially, how Roger has a rare ability to treat all moments somewhat equally. Whether it is playing on centre court or doing some of the less enjoyable parts of the job – Roger relishes it, and that is something we can certainly all learn from.

While she dominated her sport in the early 1990s – Sally admits she couldn’t have done it without the team she built around her. She was ahead of her time in seeking help with the psychological side of competing - but brought in experts in other areas too for example around nutrition. And so the theme of this episode is around asking for help, something lots of us are not good at doing. Whether it be simply opening up to a friend through to investing in yourself by seeking professional help in any area – Sally’s story shows it can make a huge difference and help you reach your potential.

Sports psychologist Helen Davis explained how the model worksin our earlier episode on 'beliefs' and she steps up again in this bitezize episode.

17 Sep 2021 | Life Lesson: Not labelling things as 'good' or 'bad' | 00:15:04
At Wimbledon this year, newcomer Emma Radacanu reached the fourth round, but had to withdraw with breathing difficulties.
It was - it seemed - a 'bad' thing. There was concern for her welfare, and questions as to whether it would impact her future Grand Slam chances.
Emma then proceeded to produce one of the all time great Grand Slam performances on the way to winning the US Open as a qualifier - without dropping a set. That experience at Wimbledon hadn't been 'bad' after all, it had been a learning experience. This is something we can all relate to. An event happens that seems 'bad' but later turns out to be anything but. Take John McAvoy - who was sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery - and said he would rather die than be arrested. How he says being sent to jail was the best thing that could have happened to him. The point is - we don't know whether something is good or bad, so better to avoid the temptation to rush to judgement and accept life as it is.

19 Sep 2021 | The self delusion: Sam Harris | 01:26:40
Most of us believe that there is a 'thinker' in our heads, who is thinking all our thoughts.
My guest this week Sam Harris - neuroscientist, philosopher, New York Times best-selling author, host of the Making Sense podcast, and creator of the Waking Up app - argues that this is an illusion. Sam says if we can clearly see this, we can largely bring an end to our own suffering.
Not pain – which is inevitable – but the psychological suffering that occurs BECAUSE we identify with our thoughts.
Thoughts simply arise in consciousness, or awareness, on their own.

27 Sep 2021 | The cruelty of addiction: Paul Merson | 00:50:21
Paul Merson – the ex Arsenal, Villa and England footballer turned Soccer Saturday regular has battled issues for years with drink, drugs and gambling, which he considers to be the cruellest of the lot.
Paul is currently clean and doing his bit to help others – not least through his new book Hooked: Addiction and the Long Road to Recovery.
It’s a stark and at times brutal account of the damage addiction can reek, and in this episode we talk about what Paul has learnt along that long road to recovery. From learning not to identify with the addictive voice in your head, to learning to sit with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings – as well as the importance of opening up and talking about your problems.
Addiction affects so many people – so if you know someone who might benefit from listening to this conversation please do share it with them.
If you are new to the show and want to learn more about addiction, I’d suggest listening to my earlier episode with Tony Adams – founder of the sporting chance clinic, or I’d recommend my conversation with Dr Russ Harris – who shares powerful techniques any of us can use to relate to difficult thoughts and feelings like anxiety or anger in a more skillful and effective way

03 Oct 2021 | Evolution: Will Greenwood | 00:49:00
Will Greenwood is one of England's greatest ever rugby players. He played centre and was a key member of the 2003 World Cup winning side.
His crucial try helped turn the game when England were trailing Wales in the quarter-finals, and one of the most memorable photos taken after England were crowned champions feautured Will and Jonny Wilkinson in a euphoric embrace.
It has been nearly twenty years since England won the World Cup, and in that time Will says he has evolved hugely as a person. You could say his focus has gone from 'me' to 'we', a natural evolution for many of us over the course of a lifetime, although in Will's case it has been sped along by his experiences in sport, in business and in everyday life. Among other nuggets, Will emphasises the importance of kindness, 'radical acceptance' and careful use of language - subjects he touches on in his new book 'World Class: How to Lead, Learn and Grow like a Champion'

10 Oct 2021 | Change Your Habits - Change Your Life: BJ Fogg | 01:05:44
Professor BJ Fogg is one of the world's top experts when it comes to behaviour change. He has spent 20 years researching and teaching insights about human behaviour, and is the author of the New York Times best-seller Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything. In this episode, we discuss why forming a new habit doesn't take place in a certain number of days. The research shows repetition has nothing to do with it, and willpower isn't a factor either. The key is to tap into emotion - and in particular the feeling of being successful. That's how to wire a behaviour in and make it automatic. In this conversation, BJ and I discuss the specific process to form a new habit, and how to unravel ones you would rather do without. 15 Oct 2021 | Lite Lesson: The futility of seeking peace in the future | 00:08:17
Do you believe you will be happy and fulfilled at some point in the future - perhaps when you get the right job, relationship or house?
Or maybe you will find lasting fulfilment when you do something really special - like win a World Cup...
Jonny Wilkinson reached the pinnacle of his sport in 2003 aged 24, when he kicked England to World Cup glory. But, rather than being left with a sense of lasting peace and fulfilment by fulfilling his ultimate goal, Wilkinson's body and mind soon began to suffer. It eventually led him to question whether inner peace could be found in objects and activities in the outside world.

17 Oct 2021 | We are all the same: John Barnes | 01:07:01
John Barnes is a former Liverpool, Watford and England footballer who would like people to think hard about discrimination and its origins.
He has a new book out - The Uncomfortable Truth about Racism - which explores the human propensity for creating illusory hierarchies in our minds and putting people on pedastals. John's point is - whatever our background - deep down we are all the same. While we are all prone to mental conditioning, we can move beyond it.

24 Oct 2021 | Challenging the Champion Narrative: Dr Amy Izycky | 01:38:48
Everyone knows the mainstream narrative around elite athletes – that they are superhumans capable of achieving the truly incredible. True in many ways – but perhaps not the whole story. What if - in many cases - the drive required to become the best in the world comes from a place of internal disquiet? Dr Amy Izycky is a clinical psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist with a major interest in sport and author of the paradigm shifting book Skewed To The Right – Sport, Mental Health and Vulnerability. This episode starts with a premise - that we all need a loving gaze from our parents or caregivers as babies and children. Without it we may internalise a belief that there is 'something missing' - which leads us on a search to fill that void by finding it in the outside world - an unsustainable pursuit. That may be in a relationship, a car, a promotion... or an Olympic gold medal. In this epiosde we also talk about changing the narrative around mental health from 'It's okay not to be okay' - true of course - to 'It's okay to do the work to be ok'

21 Oct 2021 | Lite Lesson: Imposter Syndrome | 00:17:09
Imposter sydrome is where we feel like a fraud and don't deserve the success that comes our way. It is often accompanied by uncomfortable feelings like anxiety and thoughts like "I'm not good enough" or "I don't deserve to be here". The key insight from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is that uncomfortable thoughts and feelings are normal and to be expected. It is our desire to get rid of them, or to not recognise them for what they are - simply thoughts and feelings that come and go irrespective of their content - that is the problem. To help explain more is the world's best-selling ACT teacher Dr Russ Harris - author of The Confidence Gap and The Happiness Gap. The more we can make space for all thoughts and feelings aand recognise that we are aware of them and don't have to battle them, suppress them or buy into their storylines - the more freedom we have to act in accordance with out values.

27 Oct 2021 | Lite Lesson: Being True to Yourself | 00:06:57
Why being true to yourself is vital to both success and happiness. It is easy to try and fit the mould of how we think we should act - particularly at work, but in any and all life situations. Often that means conforming to how we imagine others think we should be, taking us into the risky realm of 'mind-reading'. The answer? Be yourself as fully as you can be, not least because - as the cliche goes - you are unique. It's the best way to truly stand out and make a good impression. Former Wales captain Sam Warburton embraced this to great effect during his career.

01 Nov 2021 | Leadership: Eddie Jones | 01:03:49
What are the keys to good leadership? According to England Rugby Head Coach Eddie Jones, it's about setting a vision and working backwards, planning well, being adaptable and inspirational - which can simply stem from the way you care for people. Clear and concise communication is key, as is being a keen observer of what is happening around you and making sure your team masters the basics. Eddie Jones is one of England's most successful head coaches, having led his team to a Grand Slam, a calendar year undefeated (only the second team in history to achieve the feat) and the 2019 World Cup final. He has confirmed he will be leaving his post after the 2023 World Cup, at which point he will have been England's longest serving Head Coach. Eddie also shares gems on what we could all learn from Japanese culture - in particular leaving a place better off than when you arrived, which is Eddie's prime aim as England boss.

18 Nov 2021 | Bitesize: Put Your Phone Away | 00:07:07
We live in the age of the smartphone. While there are huge benefits to this, it also comes at a cost. We are more distracted and our brains are not getting the opportunity to power down as they need to. But also, it is having a significant impact on the quality of our communication and our relationships. A simple tip then - put your phone away when possible when you are in company. Going out for dinner? Leave your phone in ypur pocket or bag rather than face down on the table. Research shows even just having your phone in eyeshot can have a negative impact on the quality of your communication. Who better to learn from on this than Didier Deschamps - France's National manager and one of only two male footballers to have won the World Cup as player captain and team manager.

08 Nov 2021 | Trauma: Jason Fox | 01:05:57
Jason Fox is a former marine who was discharged from the army with PTSD. After coming close to suicide, Foxy started 'looking inwards' to process his trauma and work on rediscovering a childlike love of living in the present. The work he did was hugely rewarding, and since recovering he has gone on to forge a hugely successful career in the media, as star of 'SAS: Who Dares Wins' as well as on Netflix’s 'Inside the Real Narcos'. He is also the author of books including Battle Scars - which looks back in detail on his mental health difficulties and subsequent recovery - and Life Under Fire. In this episode we discuss what trauma is, the benefit of 'doing the work', and why learning to stop identifying with the voice in our head is vital. Foxy is vulnerable, honest and open, and he’s now part of Mentor 360 - which is an interesting new app that helps people become more self-aware and develop healthy new habits. It was a pleasure chatting to Jason and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did

05 Nov 2021 | Lite episode: Facing anxiety | 00:10:57
Anxiety is a very common experience, and clearly an uncomfortable one. The typical response to the feeling of anxiety in our bodies - and the accompanying racing thoughts - is to try and get rid of them, or distract ourselves from them. The problem is that may actually add fuel to the fire and perpetuate the feelings. If instead we can be brave enough to turn and face the feelings directly - not as a way to get rid of them - but with genuine curiosity and compassion, then we can lessen their power over us. To help explain more is neuroscientist, philosopher and creator of the Waking Up app Sam Harris.

21 Nov 2021 | Self-Awareness: Amy Williams MBE | 01:01:40
Amy Williams MBE became the first British athlete to win Gold at a Winter Olympics in 30 years at Vancouver 2010. Her event was Skeleton - which basically involves lying face down on a small sled, hurtling down an icy track at speeds upwards of 80 miles an hour. Not for the faint of heart. It took self-awareness for Amy to climb to the top of her chosen sport. Describing herself as shy and introverted, Amy stepped out of her comfort zone to even start Skeleton, and then worked hard at building her confidence and reducing the pressure she put herself under whilst still embracing her sensitivity. She stopped comparing herself to other people (a habit we would all do well to dispense with to some degree) and took notes in a journal every day, seeking those small improvements that add up and make all the difference over the long term. Amy has a fantastic new book out called Talent to Triumph, and we discuss many of the key themes in this conversation. It was a pleasure talking to Amy - and I hope you enjoy listening.

29 Nov 2021 | Embracing values and compassion: Laurence Halsted | 01:01:37
Laurence Halsted - who competed at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics in fencing and was a European silver medalist - believes sport is falling short of its potential. The pervasive 'win at all costs' mentality has led to problems like doping, corruption, inhumane training cultures and mental health difficulties among athletes at all levels. Laurence argues that a significant issue is the failure of sportspeople and organisations to identify - and then live in accordance with – their deeper values, and embrace a compassionate approach to life. Laurence has written a book called 'Becoming a True Athlete – a practical philosophy for flourishing through sport,' that is a manifesto for how sport and its participants can rise above the status quo. Laurence is also a key member of the True athlete Project (TAP), one of the most interesting organisations in sport. Its goal is to help create a more compassionate world by harnessing the undoubted power of sport for good.

06 Dec 2021 | Belonging: Owen Eastwood | 01:09:25
Owen Eastwood is one of the world’s top performance coaches. He worked alongside Gareth Southgate as England prepared for this year's Euros, and Team GB ahead of this summer's Olympics. He's also worked with the Scotland rugby squad, the South African cricket team, as well as the royal ballet school and the command group of NATO. Owen set out the thinking behind his success in his excellent book Belonging – the ancient code of togetherness. He shares ideas around belonging, the power of a shared vision and even the spiritual wisdom of his ancestors. He also talks about 'Whakapapa' - a fundamental principle of New Zealand Maori culture, which links people to all their ancestors who went before them.
Owen was born in New Zealand and is half English – half Maori. His father died when he was just a little boy – which unsurprisingly had a huge impact on Owen’s life … and his work. It was a pleasure to pick Owen's brains and explore his philosophy, one that has genuine depth and value, and I hope you enjoy this conversation

13 Dec 2021 | How to have difficult conversations: Tim Harkness | 01:47:26
We live in highly polarised times, where largely impenetrable tribes have formed around certain beliefs and world views – so having a guide to help us communicate effectively with people who don’t share our opinions is priceless.
Tim Harkness does a great job at outlining how to navigate the difficult conversations that persistently have negative effects in our personal and professional lives. He’s the author of the excellent book ’10 rules for talking: An expert’s guide to mastering difficult conversations.’
After going through Tim’s ten rules, we then road test them by discussing a subject in which we take differing views, and happily I can confirm we don’t fall out. Better than that – we got on really well, which is a ringing endorsement for Tim and his work.

07 Jan 2022 | Bitesize: Why you should go walking this January | 00:12:56
How walking more will boost your brain, body and creativity with professor Shane O'Mara.
Most of us do it - but almost all of us don’t walk enough. It's hardly news that we are, as a species, too sedentary, and that has only increased since the pandemic hit. The fact is that we were not designed to spend as much time as we do sitting - and by upping our step count, we can enjoy huge benefits for body and mind.

14 Jan 2022 | Bitesize: Trusting your intuition | 00:11:19
"Intuition is a powerful thing. More powerful than intellect." - Steve Jobs
"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." - Albert Einstein
The power of intuition is a difficult thing to quantify, but numerous hugely 'successful' people have sworn by it. In this week's full length conversation, Jimmy Chin spoke about how he chose to follow his intuition against the wishes of his parents. It led him to becoming a celebrated athlete, photographer and Oscar winning film Director, which he never invisaged happening. In this episode we here from Ironman triathlon legend Chrissie Wellington, who has followed her intuition throughout her life. It led her to becoming arguably the greatest Ironman competitor in history - also something she never expected to happen.

09 Jul 2023 | REWIND: Why you can't focus: Johann Hari | 01:09:55
So many of us are struggling to focus and pay attention to what we need to. It can feel like a moral failing – as if there is something wrong with us individually. But Johann Hari argues that is not the case. The problem runs much deeper.
Teenagers now focus on one task for only 65 seconds he says, while office workers aren’t much better – managing only three minutes.
It won’t surprise you to hear that digital has a significant role to play – after all, how many people don’t have a somewhat dysfunctional relationship with their phones?
But there are other factors too – including 'surveillance capitalism' and even the way childhood freedom has been curtailed.
Johann’s book is called Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention.
WARNING: This episode contains swearing and some adult themes.

21 Jan 2022 | Bitesize: Keep going - with Joe Wicks | 00:11:43
Just how did Joe Wicks harness the power of social media to become the 'Nation's PE teacher'? It's all about authenticity, consistency - and ignoring the naysayers. When Joe started posting content in 2014, there was no master plan. He just loved doing it. His mates told him to give the videos a rest, but he ploughed on and eventually broke through. It's a story that is often repeated in seeming 'overnight successes' - that ability to keep on going when the rewards are not forthcoming and people are telling you that you are flogging a dead horse, to be consistent and - crucially - authentic.

24 Jan 2022 | Calming anxiety: Chloe Brotheridge | 00:48:59
Rates of anxiety were rising rapidly before the pandemic – and have shot up since the world changed in 2020. In 2021, 'anxiety' was chosen by children as their word of the year.
It’s clearly a huge issue. One of the most powerful tools to counter anxiety is a counter-intuitive one – acceptance. So many of us distract ourselves from our feelings - not least with the help of our digital devices - but distraction is not a long-term solution. We need to move towards our feelings, not away from them.
Chloe and I discuss exposure therapy too – which is basically gradually expanding your comfort zone – as well as other tools including non-violent communication, something I have spoken about in a recent newsletter.
Plus – we share our shared belief that we are born with an innate sense of wellbeing and peace – but we lose sight of it as we age and the thinking mind comes online adding a layer of judgements, predictions and concepts

28 Jan 2022 | Bitesize: Thinking Correctly Under Pressure - with Sir Clive Woodward | 00:15:35
Sir Clive Woodward's favourite mantra has to be 'TCUP'- Thinking Correctly Under Pressure. It's about thinking through potential hurdles so that when things do go awry - you are better equipped to be able to navigate them. Sir Clive's England showed the power of TCUP when winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup at the death. Clearly the possible unexpected scenarios that you could face are limitless - the pandemic has shown that - but it is the process of thinking through possible eventualities that is key. You are training your mind to be ready to think clearly when things take an odd turn.

31 Jan 2022 | Radical vulnerability: Max Lowe | 00:54:10
Max Lowe is a filmmaker whose father was Alex Lowe – the greatest mountain climber of his generation. Days before Max’s 11th birthday, his father Alex was killed in an avalanche while on expedition in the Tibetan Himalaya. Alex Lowe’s best friend and climbing partner Conrad Anker escape from the avalanche with his life – but was left wracked with survivor’s guilt. He headed back to the States, compelled to help look after Alex’s three sons.
Conrad then ended up failing in love with - and eventually marrying - Alex’s widow, Jennifer. He also adopted Alex's three boys, the eldest of whom is Max. 17 years later, two climbers attempting the same route in the Tibetan Himalaya discovered Alex’s body. Max, Conrad and the rest of the family flew out to recover his remains. That journey was hugely impactful, and the trauma that had laid buried in Max – and his younger brothers - for all those years also rose to the surface. Max then set out to make a documentary film about what happened – called Torn, in which he and the rest of his family examine those long buried feelings. It turns out to be a painful but ultimately cathartic experience that clearly illustrates the power of radical vulnerability.
Max recognised that to release his trauma – he first needed to face it and share it. It’s a lesson so many people can learn from… and it was a pleasure talking to Max about it.

03 Feb 2022 | Bitesize: How to set goals | 00:17:14
How to set goals properly, by focusing on what we can control and recognising what we can’t. Also – it’s about understanding the truth behind that famous Einstein quote about insanity, which he defined as ‘doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.’
We’re hearing from Olympic gold medal winning rower Ben Hunt Davis. He competed in three Olympic games and in the first two – in 1992 and 1996, he finished way outside the medals. A couple of years before the 2000 Olympics, he and his teammates had an epiphany: they needed to change HOW they were doing things.
That prompted them to identify a goal – winning Olympic gold – while recognising that winning wasn’t something they could control directly. What they could focus on to give themselves the best chance of success was boat speed – prompting them to formulate a question that has since entered sporting folklore… ‘Will it make the boat go faster’?

18 Feb 2022 | Bitesize: Finding inner peace by living our values - with Professor Steve Peters | 00:14:15
We live in a very goal-orientated society. So many of us are continually striving and thinking - 'what’s next?' We may believe that when we get promoted at work, move into a bigger house or finally get a six pack – THEN we will be happy. However, you may have noticed that the horizon we are striving for always seems to stay just out of reach. Once one goal is ticked off – we want another one, ideally bigger – and so the sense of inner satisfaction we are really looking for is perpetually elusive.
Clearly there is nothing wrong with goals, they are important. But, they are by definition in the future, whereas our values are how we want to be in the world from moment to moment. And there is good research that shows the more we live in accordance with our values, the higher sense of wellbeing we are likely to experience.
One person I spoke to about values was Professor Steve Peters who came up with the Chimp Model - a metaphor for how we think, than helped many elite sportspeople from Ronnie O'Sullivan through to Victoria Pendleton and Steven Gerrard.

21 Feb 2022 | Surrendering to life's challenges: Stevie Ward | 00:58:44
We like to think we know what will happen, but we don't actually know what will happen an hour from now let alone in a years time.
Stevie Ward burst onto the rugby league scene as a teenager, helping Leeds Rhinos win the challenge cup final in 2012. But, his career was blighted by injury. He had 10 operations – all before turning 27. He had just been made Leeds Rhinos Captain and was reaching the pinnacle of career, but concussion on opening weekend of 2020 season stopped him in his tracks. Stevie announced his retirement in January of last year because of the severe side effects of his brain injury, including migraines, sensitivity to light and screens and memory issues, which continue to this day. In this episode we discuss surrender, acceptance, the difference between success and fulfilment as well as Stevie’s own 'Dark Night of the Soul.' experience.
In 2016, Stevie launched Mantality after experiencing depression and anxiety with all the highs and lows he was going through. Mantality offers coaching and counselling to people struggling with their mental health.

24 Feb 2022 | Bitesize: Professionalism - with Wales and Lions legend Sam Warburton | 00:09:21
"What you put in, you get out." Words that Wales and Lions captain Sam Warburton has lived by. It's about adopting and embracing an attitude of being you can be at everything that doesn't require talent - including effort and hard work. This is something anyone can adopt at any age - and Sam exhibited it even as a schoolboy.

28 Feb 2022 | Winning does not change who you are: Cath Bishop | 01:03:58
What is a price worth paying for a gold medal? That's a question that Cath Bishop seeks to answer in her work. Cath is a former World Champion British rower who won silver at the Olympics. She was also a diplomat and is now a leadership speaker, writer and consultant. Her book 'The Long Win' challenged the narrative around 'winning at all costs'. After competing at three Olympics - a period of her life she found draining at times - Cath reflected and realised that the cultural obsession with winning came at a big cost - to competitors, supporters and society. She is now pushing for a change in attitude - from 'conquering' to 'collaboration'. She wrote a brilliant article for the Guardian off the back of the Winter Olympics - which led to us recording this conversation.

07 Mar 2022 | Happiness by Design: Paul Dolan | 00:50:38
This conversation is about recognising that the stories and narratives we tell ourselves about what should make us happy – high status, millions of social media followers, billions in the bank – are often inaccurate. Instead – we need to start paying attention to what does make us happy – for example, spending time with friends, connection, pro-social acts of kindness and altruism, playing sport, listening to music … the list goes on.
Paul Dolan is a behavioural scientist and author of the bestselling book Happiness By Design and Happy Ever After. His motto? "Do things that bring you pleasure or purpose. If they don't - stop doing them."
So, in this episode we discuss:
Letting go of stories and paying attention to our experiences
How willpower is weak but design power is strong – what that means and how you can harness it in your own life
Why you need to put your phone away and stop recording at gigs and festivals (it interrupts your 'flow of experience')
Reaching narratives - and how the belief that X in the future will make us happy is an illusion
Why pro-social acts need to be celebrated
Why we should spend time designing our lives to increase the amount of time spent doing things that provide pleasure or purpose
The power of environment and how to harness it
The importance of acceptance and recognising we are all fallible human beings
And much more!

03 Mar 2022 | Bitesize: The problem with positive self-talk, self-esteem and affirmations - with Dr. Russ Harris | 00:12:36
We are not our thoughts, we are aware of our thoughts. The more we can acknowledge this fact, the less emphasis we put on the need for 'high self-esteem' and 'positive self-talk'. To help me bust some myths is the best-selling author of the Confidence Gap and the Happiness Trap. And just a warning - if you stand in front of the mirror and do positive self-affirmations, this episode might get you to stop. Russ is one of the world's leading experts on Acceptance and Commitment therapy, which can have a profound impact on your wellbeing and -crucially - your relationship with your mind, your thoughts and your feelings.
