Bored by just being an onlooker, Puck puts a spell on Bottom, the Weaver, that transforms his head into that of a donkey. Titania who has been sleeping nearby awakes and instantly falls madly in love with the transformed Bottom. Theseus, Duke of Athens, is preparing for his wedding to his fiancé Hippolyta, when the courtier Egeus calls on him with a complaint: His daughter Hermia does not want to marry Demetrius, the man Egeus has picked out for her. The Duke complies to Egeus’ wish to threaten Hermia with an ancient law: If she does not obey her father she must either become a nun or face death. She chooses neither and flees with Lysander, her true love, into the forest. However, they are being followed by Demetrius who knows of their plan through Hermia’s friend Helena. Helena is hopelessly in love with Demetrius. She, too, runs into the woods. But there is already an upheaval in the forest: The King and Queen of the fairies, Oberon and Titania, are feuding. Oberon demands Titania to hand over an orphan boy she has been taking care of. In revenge for Titania’s refusal, Oberon enchants her as she sleeps. Whomever she lies her eyes on first when she awakes, she will fall in love with. He sends out his servant Puck to lay the same enchantment on Demetrius. Puck messes up though, and enchants Lysander instead who now magically falls in love with Helena. As Oberon and Puck watch Demetrius still trying to woo Hermia, Puck’s mistake becomes obvious. To fix this, Oberon enchants Demetrius. Now both Lysander and Demetrius have only eyes for Helena. As the four lovers cross ways, a quarrel erupts between them. Puck, now on the mission to set things right, eventually leads the two men into opposite directions, imitating for each the voice of the other. Once they are lost in the woods and go to sleep, Puck places a counter charm on Lysander, so that his love for Hermia is restored when he awakes. Now that Lysander is no longer under the influence of the love juice, Oberon also lifts the spell off Titania. Likewise, Puck turns Bottom fully human again. The four lovers awake and are met by Theseus who has changed his mind and invites the two pairs to get married at his and Hippolyta’s wedding. Quince and Bottom meet again, too, and are eager to perform their play at the grand wedding celebration. Once night has fallen and everyone has gone to bed, Oberon, Titania and Puck reappear to bless the happily married couples.
