11 Jun 2022My Pals and I watch "Metal Lords" on Netflix + Thrash Metal History01:36:17

It's a bizness casual episode! Dan, Brian, Jackie and I watch this delightful coming of age drama together and geek out over metal minutiae. There's a decent amount of pausing the show to yell about things, which will continue in the next installment(s) I'm sure.

01 May 2023Guns n' Roses | The Dead Pool (1988) #102:23:19

Guns n' Roses tour with Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, The Rolling Stones and more! Then Clint Eastwood's kiddo gets his favorite-est band in the whole wide world to be in his dad's new movie featuring Jim Carrey and Liam Neeson. Also lots of booze and drugs and bikers and strippers! Axl Rose warms up his vocals backstage with a Queensryche song that passive-aggressively lets his band know he's sick of their heroin dependency. The "Hell House" era featuring West Arkeen and Del James is discussed. LAPD and UK journalists all show up at the biker crash pad for an epic hang. The boys from Tesla strongly imply that "Patience" was a ripoff of one of their tunes.

Many times during this era, Axl showed up to play gigs as scheduled and on time, but not always. Sly Stone shows up to use the bathroom! Many many times! Steven Adler gets in a "huge barroom brawl." Then it turns out he "punched out a street light". And then it turns out he actually just put his fist through a porch lamp outside a bar, and in doing so provided an opportunity for somebody else's drummer to take his place for a few shows while his finger healed. Living Colour's Vernon Reid has some choice words to say onstage about "One in a Million" while Axl is being forcibly pulled out of hiding and driven to the stadium with police escorts to get him onstage in time to open for the Stones that night.

Oh, and Vince Neil bravely defend's his wife's honor after Izzy Stradlin beat her up with a flurry of karate kicks and punches. OR MAYBE Vince Neil sucker punched Izzy in the dark while he was coming offstage because the lady in question told Vince a story no one else seems to be able to corroborate. Because other folks said she was blatantly putting the moves on Iz and he pushed her off him and insulted her. Could all of this simultaneously be true somehow? I would not put it past the Rock n' Roll gods to have made it so, just to fuck with us, and all the parties involved.

31 Mar 2022Shoot Episode #3: Guns n Roses/Faith No More/Metallica cont'd + Twitter, Altamont, Death songs of the 70s and my probable murder scenario02:25:47

Gilbert Gottfried as music history educator. The Faith No More | Metallica | Guns n’ Roses tour continued. An explanation of why nearly all but 2 forms of rock music vanished from radio in the late 90s. A list of other movies besides “Vanishing Point” that have radio DJs helping the protagonist. The reasons I'm not doing a Marilyn Manson episode. Wolfman Jack’s dumb 80s cartoon. A new guitar for me, and my possibly imminent muder. Post-Altamont interviews with Hell’s Angels. And post-80s butt rock. All these things are discussed for the benefit of you, my slavishly devoted listening public. Because you know there’s nothing else out there for you.

27 Apr 2024From the Patreon Collection #102:27:46

From time to time, I will populate the main feed with a Patreon episode that's at least a year old so casual listeners might get a taste of all the extra scholarship that does occur, but lands nowhere near a published episode:

Today we have: Ed Ward, Nick Tosches, Christopher Hitchens, a bad Nine Inch Nails biography, 70s DEVO origins, and lots of guitar modulation effects.

05 Sep 2021Story Time |The late 60s 01:05:25

Today's episode is simply me taking us through a handful of reference material and interviews I found extremely interesting and helpful for context, but aren't related directly to any one film I'm reviewing.

The Rolling Stones finish up an east coast leg of their U.S. tour leading up to Altamont. Hunter S. Thompson helps us understand the Hell's Angels. Janis parties backstage, also gets a tattoo. Ben Fong-Torres is a bore. Pete Townshend looks back on the late 60s from a 1987 interview.

31 May 2021Motorhead | Lemmy is God | an Airheads addendum02:21:20

I just go for it with some of the best bits of the Motorhead story. I can't do it all justice, but there's enough media out there for you to fill in the rest of the blanks yourself, don't you think?

Buy me a Book(or coffee, or pants)

After recording the Airheads Watch-a-Long Commentary I decided to devote an entire episode to the main man himself, the King of Rock n' Roll (according to me, your lovely host, anyway) Lemmy Kilmister. If you haven't heard the Airheads episode, just pop over to it really quickly and give the first 5 minutes a listen, if you'd like to be a completist about this.

01 Feb 2021Great Balls of Fire! | Jerry Lee Lewis | Part 100:30:00

In our first episode we delve into one of the later examples of the 50's nostalgia boom of the 1980's. This film is packed with quality components with a final result that hasn't decided what it wants to be when it grows up.

13 Aug 2023"Little Richard" (2000) Made For TV biopic by Robert Townshend02:36:35

This is one I started more than a year ago, and just didn't want to get anything wrong by rushing to publication too soon. But now I'm ok with the amount of research packed into this episode and can move on to creating #2. Here are a few things you have to look forward to:

  • Richard’s scat-centric pranks on family and neighbors as a child
  • Early abuse at the hands of strange white men from out of town
  • The many influences that shaped his stagecraft and persona
  • His father’s murder at the hands of just some dude that was drunk and in a bad mood
  • His journey from local bandleader to touring dynamo
  • A few of his early attempts at hit making that did not go over with the record buying public
  • The key differences between him and R&B or Blues artists of his era
  • A Rik Mayall quote from the time he met Richard
  • Life in The Upsetters on the road
  • A history lesson on "conking"
  • Recording "Tutti Frutti" with all the butt sex language taken out
  • Getting arrested for public sex stuff

07 Jul 2023Guns n' Roses | The Dead Pool (1988) #302:52:47

Enjoy me tripping over my own research on Dirty Harry at the beginning of this one, folks! Then you can also enjoy the following:

  • Duff decides it's time to bring in Slash and Steven so they can tour the west coast
  • Axl threatens to whip Michael Hutchence's onstage ass while GnR are backstage in 1988
  • More TV tropes about "The Dead Pool" including me finding SLASH's whole page of personal tropes!!!
  • Izzy bottoms out and gets sober after pissing into something that's not the toilet on a plane.
  • Manager Alan Niven discusses the Vince Neil incident at the MTV Music Video awards in fall of 1989
  • "Mick Wall at kErRaNg!" takes us through his account of the "Get In The Ring" saga and I actually side with him for once. Ok for twice, at least. I'm not a man who wants ta live in a world of absolutes, fer crissakes.
  • My friends and I do a live table read of the inFAMOUS (meaning less than famous) 1986 Karen Burch interview from "Music Connection" magazine, followed by my narration of the fallout on both sides.

Thank you so much for caring about Rock n' roll. It's the best, and so are you.

14 Jun 2023Van Halen | "The Wild Life" (1984) #103:21:00

Hello friends and welcome to Van Halen time! This episode features 3 intertwining sections: My narration of some hand-picked moments in VH history, my real-time reactions to Cameron Crowe's follow up to "Fast Times..." and a super fun interview conducted by my friend and fellow rocker, Eve Clarke, for an as-yet-unreleased series of videos she's cookin' up with other opinionated guitar enthusiasts in our local orbit. Eve's music can be found here: https://tripthewire.com/

Part two of my Van Halen series will probably be out next month, but right now it's anyone's guess if the 2nd Guns n' Roses episode gets finished first. We'll just have to see. In the meantime, please be excellent to each other and PARTY ON, DUDES!

19 Nov 2021Lita Ford and Joan Jett | "The Runaways" (2010) and "Light of Day" (1987)02:19:51

It's a good episode! If you listened to part one, it's as good as that. Plus lots of Lita Ford shenanigans, like how she obtained her awesome jeans in the "Kiss Me Deadly" video and kept George Lynch from stealing her god damn guitar cables. Also a troubling medical emergency that took place in Tokyo. Like, a disturbing one, anatomically - so consider this a great big trigger warning for the first time in the history of my show, ok?

24 Jul 2023Van Halen #2 | "The Wild Life (1984)02:47:04

The second part of maybe three? Maybe four?  Besides me talking through the mid-phase of the DLR era with my friend Eve, and my real time reactions to Cameron Crowe and Art Linson's "The Wild Life", there's alla this action right hyeah:

  • A “death of hard rock” review from 1978
  • The band hosts Wet T-shirt night at Mitty’s
  • Stories about the making of some legendary VH songs
  • Another review of “The Wild Life” (not great!)
  • VH Vying for Gene Simmons’ stewardship on the same night as not-quite-Dokken
  • David Lee Roth on his suspicions that Gene was secretly just after Eddie
  • Eddie’s Ibanez Destroyer and the Chris Holmes connection
  • Van Halen plays with Journey, Sabbath, and The Rolling Stones
  • The time Eddie chopped a piece off of his Gibson SG during a recording session
  • Some nice thoughts from Steve Lukather

30 Jun 2021Shoot Episode #2 | The Unbearable Pomposity of Rock Journalism 01:11:19

I tear into some old notes I wrote up with in the early days of planning what would become this very series of shows. Rolling Stone's history of its stupid self is covered, and I give you my recommendations for great rock history books and writers I believe are more than worth paying attention to. Special appearances by Raymond Chandler and Stephen King, naturally.

Buy me a Book(or coffee, or pants)

I'll be back with episodes on Chuck, Janis, Jim and Gram very very soon, I promise! It's been a wild month of watching weird films and I have more books to look into before I commit these intense episodes to "tape".

15 Mar 2022Chris Cornell, Audioslave, Guns n' Roses, Soundgarden, "Vanishing Point" (1971)08:27:06

We got Soundgarden, Guns n’ Roses, Faith No More, Audioslave, and Vanishing Point among other subjects to discuss. I take a near-forensic approach to the madness of the 1992 VMAs and the departure of Izzy Stradlin from the band he helped create. Also AXL sends a FAXL and throws pasta out a window. Duff punches a guy. Slash hires horn players. Stephen Davis is a really lousy rock journalist. Cornell is deep. Morello is diplomatic. Kowalski is on a mission to leave this planet. This one has everything I could stand to research and remember to look up and hurl at you, my dear listener.

This show has no patrons, no ads(that I know of as of today) and no good reason to exist except for me and you. If you feel nice, maybe click this link:

11 Apr 2021Singles Part 2 | Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden03:37:36

Support here: https://linktr.ee/justtheworstever if you like this show! I'm still learning how to do this all as I work through the process, and I appreciate everyone who listens, thank you for being here for it.

It's gonna get SO VERY in depth this time! Part 2 of at least 4(?) on the making of Singles. I'll discuss the musical and personal lives of roommates Chris Cornell and Andrew Wood. Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone were radically different bands that meant drastically different things to the Seattle music scene and the worldwide rock scene of the 80s and 90s. I cannot do it all justice, but I think you'll enjoy the many many details explored in this episode. It was recorded in multiple parts over the course of the last month and kinda knocked me on my ass, emotionally.

Resources I drew from include Corbin Reiff's "Total Fucking Godhead", Mark Yarm's "Everybody Loves Our Town," RollingStone.com, "Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story", "PJ20" and "The Love Bone Earth Affair".

02 May 2022KISS #3 | "Metamorphosis" episode of The Incredible Hulk (1979)02:20:07

It's a Gene Simmons episode! I go all over the timeline, but focus more on some happenings in the REVENGE era as well as the 80s excess in Gene's life. The stuff that happened while the band lost their heaviness and started rotating thru replacement guitarists.

Also covered: yet another anti-rock n' roll tv show episode with a hokey satanic anthem that no one would ever listen to and a band no one would go crazy for, let alone trample an innocent girl in an effort to kidnap members of said band.

I also lose my mind over Dolly Parton, which is only natural.

This one is truly, truly, truly outrageous like fer SHUR! 2nd warning in a row that you will hear a bonanza of F-Bombs from yours truly on this one. You'll get lots of the usual side trips into various major events of the life of the band in question along with reviews/history of Satisfaction, Valley Girl and Jem & The Holograms (the show, not the movie). You'll also hear as I get louder and more random in my live observations about Britta Phillips and Justine Bateman's performances as band members onscreen. Be thank-filled that I don't record every episode this late at night with friends and drinks around.

09 Feb 2022KISS #2 | "Rock Devil Rock" from CHiPs Season 6 (1982)03:49:08
Today I force myself to watch the Halloween episode from Season 6 of CHiPs featuring Ralph Malph from Happy Days, the bassist for Metallica, and the always-enchanting Mistress of the Dark, Elvira! I also lean heavily into Peter Criss and Paul Stanley's accounts of important moments in KISS-story like the recording of Destroyer and Psycho Circus.

25 May 2022"Eddie and the Cruisers" (1983) #1 | Bruce Springsteen | Arthur Rimbaud | P.F. Kluge01:14:41

This movie is very special to me and so are the songs on the soundtrack. I hope you like this episode, much of it recorded months ago. There will be at least one or two more coming soon.

It's funny, because my original intent was to publish a multi-hour episode on "Eddie &..." with a brief mention of "Streets of Fire" at the end, since Michael Pare stars in both films. But S.o.F. ended up being a whole big thing of its own on the last 2 episodes and now I'm finally releasing the "Eddie" stuff in small bits to make it feel like less of a heavy lift, due to so many moving parts in my approach to this film and the source material. I really appreciate you listening, especially if you're new to the series! Next episode will delve deeper into the experience of filming and the reception of the music and rock journo douche-chill-invoking comparisons to "The Boss". I'm gonna get a lot more cranky on that one ;)
Buy the original novel because it is good, if you're bad.

18 Aug 2022Eddie and the Cruisers (1983) #2 | Bruce Springsteen02:30:32

No not the sequel. That film, like "Godfather 3" is just something you heard of and may foolishly think you remember, but never actually happened.  This is just the second part of my series on this wonderful film that is mighty beloved to me.

Settle in and prep yourself for more readings from Bruce Springsteen interviews & the P.F. Kluge novel, my analysis of the movie and its origins and execution in my own loving detail, + my very accurate representations of Bruce's non-Jersey-sounding singing voice. Not to mention my cogent explanation of what I've termed "The Mount Rushmore of Jersey rock singers that try to sound like they're from The South". I'm not sorry.

02 Jun 2022"ELVIS!" (1979) by John Carpenter #102:04:08

Hot on the heels of Halloween, John Carpenter lovingly crafted this tribute to The King and established his long-term friendship with Kurt Russell. Let's talk about Scotty Moore, Robert Goulet, Merle Kilgore, Lester Bangs, Public Enemy, Living Colour, Sam Phillips, Dick Clark and oh yes, ELVIS ARON PRESLEY. To me, yes he is The King. But so are LIttle Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lemmy Kilmister and Chuck Berry. So these Elvis episodes will neither be a deconstruction nor a glorification.

20 Dec 2023"Zabriskie Point" (1970) | Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead02:16:58

Phil Lesh is the best music writer. Richard Wright may or may not have been incredibly smart for not legally being a member of Pink Floyd from 1980 onward. I agree with Roger Ebert for once. Bear knows a thing or two about sound reenforcement after going mostly deaf in one ear. EMI helps create the first internet conspiracy theories in rock. The Dead ditch the jug band thing after seeing "Hard Day's Night." Star of the film dies in the middle of bench press. Douglas Adams makes an appearance in the name of "The fundamental interconnectedness of all things" and $5,000 of Floyd's money. Stuff blows up in slow motion. Weir and Garcia have a pointed back-and-forth with their front-of-house feedback. Roger Waters does his best Italian accent and makes sure all the 1970 soundtrack tapes are reused in future song demos.

All this and more, in today's educational whirlwind of sound and flerp. Flerp means words, I guess.

31 Jan 2023Hank Williams Episode 2 | "Your Cheatin' Heart" (1964) continued02:26:02

Welcome back! Thank you for patiently waiting for this 2nd part of the "I watched 3 Hank Williams movies in one weekend though ironically its taking me more than 3 months to release the series" trilogy.

I cover lots of stuff you don't normally hear about in Hank Sr retrospectives and documentaries, so even if you've seen a few, you might still learn something here on this episode.

I gotta take a break from Hank to release one or two episodes next that require a little less labor becoz they're already mostly completed. This next 30 days may be the most randomized release schedule I've ever attempted, thematically speaking. HOPE YOU LIKE VARIETY!!!!

07 Apr 2023"The Crow" (1994) Episode #2 | Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails, James O'Barr04:17:46

New monthly bonus feed here! https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock

This episode is dense and detailed as all hell. I say that every few months about a new episode, it's true. But this really ranks up there with my Janis Joplin, Chris Cornell, AC/DC and Doors episodes in the amount of research (see the many references below) and interstitial music edits involved. So thank you in advance for your indulgence. This one covers:

  • An expanded history of James O'Barr's journey from the USMC to optioning The Crow for a development deal
  • Joy Division's early gigs, record deals, recording experiences, and Ian Curtis's death
  • Trent Reznor's trials putting together the "Pretty Hate Machine" era Nine Inch Nails lineup, touring as an opening act, 1990s ascension as the eternal outsider, generally underreported backstage raucousness and the eventual shift into "Downward Spiral"
  • The many steps between "The Crow" as a comic book released independently out of Detroit to nationwide distribution to screenplay revisions to script revisions and securing a serious-ass movie deal for real. Featuring accounts of Jeff Most and John Shirley who made it happen
  • Clashes and controversies behind the scenes between writers, producers and director of the film, extending all the way to what DVD features we've still been denied due to legal squabbling that took place even years after the film's release

28 Feb 2021"Back Beat" (1994)| also "Yesterday" (2019)| Beatles in Hamburg00:50:20
Don Was records members of Nirvana, Sonic Youth, REM, Soul Asylum, Afghan Wigs, and Gumball as they record (in only 2 DAYS with no rehearsal beforehand) covers of covers that the Beatles covered in their Reeperbahn and Grosse Freiheit days when they had to sleep next to the women's toilets and get woken up by the sound of old ladies pissing every morning. Small wonder they made short work of American journalists trying to talk smack to them when they came to the USA years later. Oh and it's all portrayed by Professor Quirrel, the bad guy from the first Blade movie, and Laura Palmer. Also, that newer romantic film, Yesterday.

30 Sep 2021The Runaways (2010) | Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Sandy West, Jackie Fox01:22:19

The Queens of Noise! Come and get it, boys! Let's talk about the movie that is inherently biased in favor of Joan and Cherie, but nonetheless a killer rock n' roll film about a band that could be a 7-season HBO series. And the ending would be almost as disappointing as Game of Thrones considering all the potential talent that was "wasted" in more ways than one. (I mean The Runaways as well as the GoT cast and writers, HAW HAW!)

27 Jul 2022Go-Go's Part 1 | "Satisfaction/Girls of Summer" (1988/1991)01:29:01

Warning: Tons of F-Bombs from your host in this one.

Julie Roberts & Justine Bateman portrayed members of band managed by Liam Neeson, along with Britta Phillips at the tail end of her tenure as the lead vocalist of TV's "Jem & The Holograms" (which I think merits its own episode, soon). Meanwhile, the Go-Go's get together in the late 70s L.A. punk scene, tour the UK, come home, get signed and through touring with The Police and getting on MTV, they become huge 80s megastars and inspirations to a kajillion young women and girls of that era. I draw from B&W punk zines, Belinda's memoirs, 1 of 2 documentaries and real time recordings of me and some pals watching "Satisfaction" a year and a half ago that I'd be saving for this episode. Because damn it, that f**king movie is impossible for me to find anywhere now, so I knew I wouldn't get a second chance to react to it or explain it.

02 Feb 2021Airheads Watch-a-Long Film Commentary02:11:06

My pal Dan and I spent X-mas watching this rock n' roll favorite beloved by rockers and radio station employees to this day. We break down the making of the film, the many musical considerations involved in the soundtrack, the stellar comedy cast, and overall how the guy who directed Heathers and Hudson Hawk + the guy who wrote XXX, The Jerky Boys movie, and the Motley Crue biopic for Netflix worked very hard to make a rock movie for the 90s that reflects almost nothing about 90s rock except for when it tries to pretend 90s rock sucks and should be overturned entirely by 3 guys who clearly came from a Motley Crue concert circa Dr. Feelgood. Special notes about Lemmy, Kurt Loder, Vince Neil's manslaughter trial, and NY Hardcore band Reagan Youth almost getting ripped off by an LA band submitting their "original" song to the movie producers to be the Lone Rangers hit single that Chazz wrote before HE EVEN MET YOU.

27 Jun 2022Part 2 of My Friends and I watching "Metal Lords" on Netflix + Thrash Metal History02:12:07

Jackie, Brian, Dan and I are back to carry you on thru the end of "Metal Lords" like the ferryman over the river Styx (not the band). Arrive with coins over your eyes and be prepared for more Thrash Metal history, more jokes and hijinks with the gang and be prepared to learn the magical connection between this movie, Game of Thrones and Stephen King.

29 Jun 2022Elvis Presley | "ELVIS!" (1979) by John Carpenter #202:14:35

This round will contain less info about the film, and has no mentions of Robert Goulet, I promise. But it IS all about the usual things you discuss when it comes to THE KING. Stuff you just can't avoid when bringing up  Elvis Aron Presley: Bloom County, Charles Bronson, 'lectric guitar pickups, Corey Feldman, Johnny Cash, electro shock therapy, 16 year old Priscilla, Sam Phillips, and the case for Colonel Tom Parker being a paranoid psychopath who never let Elvis tour Europe because he was still wanted for the murder of a young shopkeeper in his tiny Dutch hometown.

31 Jan 2022"Crossroads" (1987) | Robert Johnson05:17:22

I attempt to cover all the angles that contribute to the question, “What’s the big deal with Robert Johnson and why do people obsess over him?”

1. Musical Proficiency

2. Lyrical intrigue

3. Hoodoo vs Devil connections

4. Tragic life story full of suffering

5.  Mystery about technical details - in recording AND guitar technique, with one contributing to the other

6. Setting the template for a rock god: Having lots of sex, traveling non-stop, abusing your body chemically, having a demonic reputation, dying young at 27 with bonus points for being murdered by the husband of a woman you were openly fooling around with.

I also focus on the 1987 Karate Kid spinoff film "Crossroads" where Daniel travels to Mississippi to crane kick Steve Vai in the all-valley blues championship of Hell and damnation.  While technically not canon in the Cobra Kai extended universe, "Crossroads", much like "Shadows of the Empire" links Karate Kid and Karate Kid part 2 behind the scenes of the main narrative.

14 May 2022"Sid and Nancy" (1986) Watch-a-long commentary/reaction w Sex Pistols history for context02:42:41
Sid. Nance. Cox. Others. I kept most of the talk focused on what happened with the Sex Pistols during the Sid Vicious era and what happened to Sid and Nancy after the breakup of the band. Lots of different perspectives on what went down at The Chelsea Hotel. Not a load of background on the making of the film this time, you can buy the Criterion edition for that. I just decided to react in real time to what was taking place on screen. I go from a few righteous exclamations of, "Good one, Sid!" to  exasperated to repulsed to tearful, while dovetailing back to the history of the people involved.

31 Jan 2023Bret Michaels/Poison | My Pals and I Watch "A Letter From Death Row" (1998)02:13:31

No idea who this is for, other than people like us who HAD to watch the Brett Michaels movie as soon as we found out about it. I start the episode with some older interviews just so that the Bret fans will have something of value to listen to before the rest of the episode slides into 2 hours of loud befuddlement on the part of myself, Dan, Brian, and Jackie. Some of you already know their voices from the Shred Guitar and Metal Lords episodes I put out last year.

The film in the only viewable online form we could find: https://youtu.be/Qbbrr4oim-k

The actual film commentary portion of the episode begins around 24 minutes in.

Playlist of Brett's videos from this era that we watched after the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqhEQrez8Mg&list=PL5313C11648F8BDDC

25 Jan 2025#3 on White Zombie (1932) AND WHITE ZOMBIE: Sean Yseult, Rob Zombie, Jay Yuenger, Ivan DePrume02:34:57

Today is the IVAN DEPRUME INTERVIEW EPISODE! WOOOO!

Also featuring more retrospective on the 1932 White Zombie film and narratives provided by Rob Zombie, Sean Yseult and Jay Yuenger from old interviews and blogs and books. The fine people at Radish Mattress and I will cover, among other topics:

  • Ivan’s upbringing in Brooklyn, his drum heros, and how he fit into the band over the years
  • Rebuilding the engine on the White Zombie van for their early tours
  • The elements of his 1992 drum kit that he still owns and uses in his recent projects
  • How his mother got to America to escape Nazi occupation and death camps in Ukraine and Poland
  • The Boundless Joy album and tour last year
  • His best times in the gym with Rob Zombie
  • His impression of every White Zombie guitarist over the years
  • His view of Sean and Rob’s separation and how it led to the splintering of the band’s family vibe
  • How he ate on the first European tour after blowing all his per diem money on a bitchin pair of leather pants
  • The scary encounters on the road to places like revolution-wracked Yugoslavia and the Berlin Wall when it was torn down
  • The bogus story Rob made up about why Ivan left White Zombie and the audio of Rob making bullshit up onstage on Phil’s first night behind the kit
  • Ivan’s views on how to best live life and take care of the people and communities around us
  • My breakdown of Victor Halperin’s techniques in the film “White Zombie” and the way the movie made me feel all these years after first seeing it in 1996
  • An exploration of Jay Yuenger’s studio notes on “La Sexorcisto” and “Astro Creep” including the Phaser trick on “Blur the Technicolor”
  • A dip back into Rob Zombie’s history starting after his “PeeWee’s Playhouse” experience and the indie NYC noise band scene White Zombie was entrenched in at the time. Also his time doing layout and typesetting for little known porno mags
  • A wrap up of Sean Yseult’s narrative on her years in the band and the noble modesty she displays by not using it to air any dirty laundry and simply highlight all the fun times and great people she experienced when the band got big. I mean, lots of other people would make an entire book about what it was like in the 80s and 90s if they were involved romantically with Rob Zombie, Dave Wyndorf and Al Jourgensen, right? But instead you get drawings and handwritten sheet music and cool electric basses and homemade costumes and cocktail party themes.
  • And through it all there’s plenty of helpful input from our sponsor representative brand officer CEO of Radish Mattress/Bootleg Ayhueasca of Canton, Ohio Inc. We praise and thank them for their partnership, and all heads must bow and each tongue shall confess and every knee shall bend for Radish Mattress.

16 Mar 2023"The Crow" (1994) | Nine Inch Nails, Joy Division, James O' Barr02:30:35

Here we go! The beginning of The Crow saga I've been working toward for a couple of years. I had big plans to cover more bands from the soundtrack, but after learning what I learned about O'Barr and Reznor's mutual love for Joy Division, I decided to take this route. Please enjoy hearing about:

  • Trent Reznor's Cleveland cover band years, becoming a roadie for The Revolting Cocks and making Pretty Hate Machine for TVT Records
  • James O'Barr's early life, tragic loss of his fiancee, joining up with the Marines, creating and publishing The Crow
  • Joy Division's origin story in Manchester, starting with the early Sex Pistols gigs they all went to and how they snagged Ian Curtis, and developed their early sound

23 Dec 2021"Beyond The Doors" (1984, '87 or '89) | Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, John Densmore03:49:41

KEE-RYST this movie blows! If you're a Doors fan you'll be happy to know this voluminous episode is mostly about the band, not the movie(much like the Part 1 ep). Did Jim do heroin? Probably not, but Robbie definitely did. Is Ray a big wanker? Yes, but he's still the reason the band exists and continues to be famous. Is John helpful to have around when your lead singer pulls a knife on an innocent woman and there's no one else around to help her? Certainly not! But he sure can play that ride cymbal, eh?

27 Jun 2021Chuck Berry Pt 1 | Cadillac Records01:17:39

We got ourselves a long, satisfying road ahead of us, discussing the Chuck Berry in a variety of celluloid presentations. Today's episode will delve into the Chess Records biopic, "Cadillac Records" with a preview of "Go Johnny, Go" which will be our next episode about Chuck.

We talk plugging, payola, Alan Freed, Leonard Chess, Chuck getting ripped off, taking your own music back, moving beyond "playing for the neighborhood," and which authors seem to have it out for Chuck vs the ones who focus on the impact of his musical and lyrical output. Overall, we'll discuss what sets Chuck apart from what might laughably be called his peers along with his portrayal by Mos Def in this 2009 film.

I do a guitar tone comparison to demonstrate the production style contrasts between Bon era and mid-80s AC/DC. I also discuss more of the happenings of the "Who Made Who" yrs listen to the "AC/DC Live at Donnington" commentary so you don't have to and wrap up the saga with questions about why people guilty of heinous crimes(like Bill Cosby) against others always want you to hate and fear rock n' roll, horror movies, and AC/DC specifically.

05 Oct 2022I Watched 3 Hank Williams Movies in One Weekend |Part One | "Your Cheatin' Heart" (1964)02:09:56

Hank Williams Sr. is not only crucial to the development of Country and Western music, I'd go as far as to say he's an influence on the development of the culture of the the Western World - as in multiple continents. But more importantly for us, Rock n' Roll would certainly not be as rich in rhythm, poetry and plaintive cries from the wounded human soul to the deafening wind in the cold wilderness that is Life, when you're down and out. In my opinion he not only changed Country music forever, but he sang blues as well as any white man ever can be expected to.

This episode covers most of my viewing of "Your Cheatin' Heart", an MGM musical from the early 60's that feels like an olde-tyme Disney film, and I take you through Hank's early life and influences. The greatest cluster of said influences being a spinal deformity, his domineering mother, a regular booze habit at the age of 11, and the tutelage of a black blues musician named Rufus Payne. All potent ingredients in a recipe for a man who would become a voice for the voiceless in ways no Country superstar ever had before.

26 Sep 2023Shoot Episode #4 | Bass Player Book Reviews, Jann Wenner, Lester Bangs, "Wild in the Streets", Guns n' Roses formation02:08:32

Sometimes reading autobiographies leads to great (or just mild) disappointment and no great use for a normal episode of the show. In today's case, I refuse to be the only person who is disappointed, nay INCONVENIENCED, by the works of Nikki Sixx, Flea, and Dave Ellefson. None of these sources that I sought out will be usable in conjunction with a film, but that doesn't mean I can't squeeze at least a bit of fun out of 'em. Or at least, review them for you so you can decide for yourself how much more you need from those pages.

26 Oct 2022MISFITS #3 | The Crimson Ghost (1946)| The Oblong Box (1969) | Jay Whitecotton Halloween Special Interview03:40:36

This is an episode I'm as proud of as I could ever be. I had the joy of covering the Misfits turbulent times in the 70s, 80s, and 90s with all the innocent fun + mean-spirited legal chicanery I could unearth. This will include yarns about WCW, Static Age, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the creation of Legacy of Brutality, The Box Set, and Jerry and Doyle stealing Danzig's Samhain skateboards FROM UNDERNEATH GLENN'S BACK PORCH WHEN HE WASN'T AROUND BECAUSE THE ANZALONE PARENTS WERE LIKE "WHATEVER!". I also have the massive pleasure of including pieces of my Jay Whitecotton interview. No, he's not a plantation owner and slave driver (as his seeimingly racist industrialist name would suggest). He's a comic and musician from San Antonio that has a new Halloween Special that you should check out if you love standup comedy filmed in a basement with cuts to A GENUINE lizard person reading the post-apocalyptic news to you in the near near future. Speaking with him was a gift, and I'll release more of our conversation on my youtube channel, also in the near future (link to subscribe down below).

04 Mar 2024Van Halen #5 | "The Wild Life" (1984)02:16:31

Next episode will feature a deep dive on "Better Off Dead" and conclude the Van Halen saga. But until then, please enjoy:

  • A very well-rounded view of VH history by Eddie Van Halen in 1990
  • Sammy Hagar's arguably sketchy claims about Van Halen's numbers before and after he joined
  • Eddie producing and promoting a band called "Private Life" who obviously did not go on to amazing things (but hey, even if you or I never heard their songs, they still accomplished more than most of us, eh?)
  • Eve Clarke interviewing me about my "Perfect 10" VH tunes of the David Lee Roth era
  • Sammy's tale of meeting Eddie for the first time and joining Van Halen
  • The final installments of my real-time (and space-time) reactions to the Art Linson/Cameron Crowe teen epic that had a lot going for it even if it didn't come out fully cooked - "The Wild Life," starring Nice Guy Eddie, Marty McFly's mom, Vincent Vega's heroin dealer, Clark Griswold's cousin Eddie, and the "Wanna take a bath?" gal from Pink Floyd's Wall film adaptation.

18 Feb 2023Mini KISS episode #4 | Ace Frehley | Quantum Leap "Glitter Rock" s3 ep 17 watch-a-long commentary |03:16:24

It's an ACE episode! And a TV episode! Such a cheap cop out for a show with "film" in the title, I know. But you love it when I subvert your expectations, don't you? This one dips heavily into Ace's account of important moments in KISStory and then permutationalizes into a commentary track for an old Quantum Leap episode. I hope you can enjoy both, because I care about you and want you to be happy. Because of me. I want you to be happy because of things I do, because I'm a no-good person and all of life is just a series of transactions.

13 Apr 2022"Crossroads" (1987) Part 2 | Steve Vai and the History of Shred Guitar02:56:44

This, I predict, will go down in history as a muchly beloved episode due to the involvement of 2 delightful interlopers with greater shred cred than I. Get ready for the history of Steve Vai, his contributions to electric guitar design, his tutorship by Joe Satriani and Frank Zappa, and his involvement in "Crossroads." We also dig into Yngwie Malmsteen, the creation of Shrapnel Records and lots of other 80s electric guitar history they don't talk about on Pop Up Video, American Bandstand, or even Total Request Live, god help us. And there's a whole 'nother episode coming out real qwick after this one to make more shredness happen!

Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, Legs McNeil, Nick Tosches, Rex Weiner, and because I'm feeling sassy as hell, Michael O'Donoghue. Yep, this is a purely selfish and HUGELY self-indulgent episode where I read you things that recently made my heart swoon. Things I love for the pure energy of the language used, but that I can't graft onto any one band or film episode.

Much brutality and obnoxiousness and vulgarity in this episode. But it's endearing and inspiring because it's delivered to us by a reckless and desperate generation with heart and intellect and guts, god damn it. Not for the easily offended, especially those who refuse to believe that historical/cultural context should affect how we process language that we personally wouldn't use today, even around our friends.  Not asking anyone to love it or sign off on it, but I will not pretend I have the authority or responsibility to make the nasty words palatable for people who will be offended by them regardless. If you are explaining, you are losing, as someone much smarter than myself on NPR said today about political debate tactics.

15 Feb 2024Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Michelangelo Antonioni #2 | "Zabriskie Point" (1970)05:42:51

Well, this was ill-advised, I now think to myself... and now you've got a big ol' buffet to keep going back to for as many trips as you'd like, and I don't know how many of you were expecting Jell-O as well as sushi after your fried green beans. But, whether you listen to it all in sequence or segments, I hope it's valuable to you!

Here's a few things you will hear about during the ride:

  • Contraptions used to make Pink Floyd songs like "One of These Days" happen and how they were calibrated
  • The definition of scenery gorn and other tropes found in the film
  • The Bear's emotional relationship with the Wall of Sound, which becomes everyone's relationship with it as well, because The Dead could not perform the same way on everyone else's rinky dink P.A. systems after experiencing the clarity they were used to
  • Pink Floyd's year-long scheme to move from Capitol to CBS in America
  • Hendrix blowing off the Dead on the night he promised to jam, and their low key "revenge"
  • Antonioni's opinions on filmmaking in America vs Italy. What it was like to film Z.P. through the eyes of an American member of the crew who actually did admire his work
  • Richard Wright not showing up very much, getting booted
  • Jerry Garcia records his Zabriskie Point soundtrack music in much less time than he wanted to. And has his payment stolen by Mickey Hart's dad. Who also steals car parts and speakers from Bear
  • Floyd does more regrouping, post-breakup with Roger. Roger gets cranky. Clapton gets a cheeseburger. Roger is still cranky today that the band he walked away from and then sued when they didn't die without him will not promote his albums on their social media
  • The Grateful Dead play for the largest outdoor rock audience of all time in upstate New York. And perform long soundcheck concerts for free on top of that
  • Pink Floyd's 1975 SoCal shows being ruined by LAPD for 4 days
  • Phil Lesh drinks Canadian Whisky with mystery capsules in it and Jerry Garcia crawls around on the floor like a caterpillar who can't leave the room on his own
  • Kurt Loder gives a mean-spirited review of a mean-spirited album.

19 Apr 2022"Crossroads" (1987) Part 3 | Steve Vai and the History of Shred Guitar Continued04:36:22

More deepy-divey into the making of the Jack Butler guitar duel and the crafting of the specific guitar itself! Also a review of the recent Charvel Guitars documentary, some background on Joe Satriani's early years in San Fancisco, and more hyperactive shred chat with Dan and Brian. OH, and a major detour into everything Motley Crue was up to during 1991, for reasons that will be made abundantly clear as we examine Steve Vai's shifting mindset during that era. Also I sploosh majorly over my new favorite gospel song of all time and Joe Morton's mastery of acting like a major prick toward Ralph Macchio before he takes the stage.

26 Oct 2022MISFITS #2 | "Die, Die, My Darling!" (1965) | "Horror Hotel" (1960) | Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only, Doyle02:27:17

So happy I get to revisit MISFITS once again! But I'm also amazed and a little bit unhappy it took me a full year to do it. I've covered two films - just my basic rundown & first impressions. And my ruling on whether you should look them up or not, instead of details about the makings of. Because there isn't much documentation I could easily find. Especially since Hammer was such a movie factory at the time, cranking out work non-stop. It's not like there are multiple books or documentaries about these two pictures, ala "Apocalypse Now" or "Citizen Kane" or "The Ewok Adventure".

Spoiler alert: If you were hoping for a deep dive into all the times Jerry and Glenn were nice to each other, it's probably not this. Spoiler alert #2: I do indeed talk about the time Jerry and Doyle got a Yngwie Malmsteen singer to do a power metal album with them in 1989.

Please enjoy and look forward to one more MISFITS installment coming your way before Halloween this year.

14 Apr 2024La Bamba! (1987) | Ritchie Valens, Lou Diamond Phillips, Curt Sobel01:27:16

I don't know how to warn you I might get a little wibbly-bibbly in the wobbles during this one. Verklempt, if you will. Similar to the way I was on the CROW episodes processing the loss of Brandon Lee all over again. Ritchie was clearly a marvel and a unique talent in ways I didn't understand until now. To be a guitar hero and a hit songwriter and a teen idol at the same time is a hurculean accomplishment for a 17-year-old kid from Pacoima, California in 1958. And I struggled a bit when jumping on the mic right after my research. This goes back to me being a little kid when I saw the film and begged my dad for a cassette tape of the soundtrack, which I treasured. Rock n' Roll, baby. Rock n' roll.

It's gonna be a bit of this n' that:

  • The first impressions of Ritchie by his most prominent biographer, Beverly Mendheim, while she struggled to suss out his ethnicity as an impressionable teenager
  • The career struggles and ongoing activism of Lou Diamond Phillips, who is more consistently successful as an actor than many would realize (Me. I mean me, until now)
  • The masterful music editing of Curt Sobel on La Bamba! while working closely with Los Lobos and director Luis Valdez (more on him in the next episode!!!)
  • Ed Ward's dumbass take on Ritchie in the modern era that rivals even his awful reviews of The Beatles back in the late 60s
  • Readings from a very concise, but effective bio on Ritchie taken from a guitar tab book that I highly recommend

14 Sep 2021AC/DC and Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive #201:57:26

More Bon Scott, and more Stephen King. How did the band's first UK tour go? And who ruined it by dying an untimely death? (hint: not a member of AC/DC) Why didn't they take off in America? What song did Stephen King have to sing to convince Acca Dacca to do his soundtrack? And what did he do with the gift that they gave him after the film came out?

14 Apr 2023"The Crow" (1994) episode #3 | Nine Inch Nails, Brandon Lee04:28:56

New monthly bonus feed here! https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock

This marks the end of The Crow trilogy...of my shows, not the film trilogy. Much like the Robert Johnson episode, I was shocked to find out how little of full story of this incredibly talented performer's death I had actually known all this time.

The Crow stands out from many other subjects of A History of Rock n' Roll in Film and Rock n' Roll. I simply don’t talk in as much detail about most movies I cover on these episodes. But I think it stands to reason that many of them didn’t have an influence on modern culture, moviemaking and popular music like this one did. Usually the subjects covered in the films I review (the rock stars with names in the title, or just the era of culture portrayed) had more influence in real life than the films themselves.

This episode covers a lot more Nine Inch Nails through some great interviews with Trent Reznor from the 90s, plus one little magazine review of an early New Order show that I couldn't help but include, and a quick deviation at the beginning toward a famous comic book innovator who once found himself in the same positions as a young James O'Barr did while serving in the U.S. military.

This one gets a bit silly, a bit raw, a bit sad, but it was needed. Cheers, all. Your continued indulgence is noted and appreciated.

21 Mar 2024Van Halen #6 | "Better Off Dead" (1985)03:49:16

Hello and get ready for so much Van Halen once again! And Better Off Dead! So much good stuff that could have only happened in the 1980s converging in one place. Along with more 70s Van Halen history too, of course. We'll cover stuff like:

  • Savage Steve Holland's real life experiences that went into his script, and later work in children's cartoons
  • Michael Anthony's first meetup with Sammy Hagar
  • Eddie's challenges in early life as a shy kid would couldn't speak english in America
  • His challenges shaking off the controlling influence of David Lee Roth and Ted Templeman making "1984" the way HE and Alex and Donn Landee wanted to
  • John Cusack's initial hatred of "Better Off Dead" and his eventual backpedal
  • The Van Halen family's journey from The Netherlands to Pasadena by boat and by train
  • My shock at finding out Alex's drums on certain songs were actually an electric kit
  • Al, Mike, and Sammy's soundcheck routines and gear specs on the 1993 tour
  • The AC/DC songs Eddie says inspired "Panama" and "Drop Dead Legs"
  • The making of Van Halen 2 and how it was intentionally different from the debut album
  • How "Fair Warning" influenced what happened on "Diver Down" which in turn influenced "1984"
  • Eddie's on-the-road-all-night-every-night initial fling with Valerie Bertinelli that morphed straight into their marriage
  • What happens when a couple of lucky young dudes from Pennsylvania get to party with Van Halen and MTV doesn't know how to keep up with it all

AND SO MUCH MORE. Including lots of my musical interludes and suprise voices from throughout time and space! Even more than usual.

Please remember that Rock n' Roll is the best, and so are you!

02 Feb 2021Singles, Cameron Crowe and Seattle Rock | Part 100:34:07

Cameron Crowe would be so proud of the award I've bestowed upon him. This episode allows me to take some meandering paths. You could go so far as to accuse me of being unfocused and noncommittal to the high calling of delivering sharp, energetic and intentional content that is immediately actionable, were you an uncouth swine who cared not a'tall for the recognition of the Fundamental Interconnectedness of All Things. Melvins, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and more in this and the next (likely) 3 parts to come.

03 Mar 2023"Heavy Metal" (1981) | DEVO, Black Sabbath, Stevie Nicks, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick03:46:50

Who wants to chat about animation, new wave, and early 80s heavy metal? This episode is wild by any of my usual standards. The topics veer all over the place and the music is wackier than normal. Hope you like it!

This one covers the making of Heavy Metal, the amalgamation of many different animation studios all working overtime to complete their different segments, the difference between Taarna and the original Moebius story "Arzach" or Arzack or whatever, the anarchic and confrontational post-Kent-State-Massacre origins of DEVO, the resurgance of Sabbath in an era where pretty much EVERYone wanted them to die, a Lester Bangs review of Stevie Nicks' "Belladonna", the creation of Blue Oyster Cult's insignia, and Cheap Trick cutting ties with their problematic bassist in order to take on a much more problematic bassist.

I'm likely committing the final Hank Williams episode to the new Patreon account, as well as some Van Halen content, Guns n' Roses backstory, then some Nine Inch Nails & Joy Division bonus material that won't fit on my upcoming episode for "The Crow". And it will continually feature lot of historical readings on the origins of Rock n' Roll I haven't been able to assign to any previous episodes yet. Not to mention some wacky video ideas I've been unable to get past the Youtube robots, so I have to take 'em behind the curtain for the die hard fans of the show.

20 Oct 2023"White Zombie" (1932) & WHITE ZOMBIE | Bela Lugosi, Sean Yseult, Rob Zombie, Jay Yuenger, Ivan DePrume05:06:35

Damn right, I'm doing my "White Zombie" episode just before Halloween! I never had too much of a plan for when I was going to produce this one, because I knew it would be another massive undertaking as well as another "way more history of the band than the movie" situation.
If this is your first episode of the show, WELCOME! I want you to know this is probably the coolest band that ever existed for me. I've been bonkers over them since my best friend Eli let me borrow his cassette of "La Sexorcisto" back in 1992. I genuinely did not understand why everyone in the universe did not love this band as much as I did from 92-98. Here's what we'll cover today:

Sean’s early years in ballet and art classes, as well as an amazing summary of her WZ career after the fact (more on her musical influence on the band next episode)

The beginning and ending of Sean’s relationship with Rob

Rob’s early entertainment influences and work on “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse”

Jay’s tales of the NYC recording of La Sexorcisto, how he managed to not starve, and Ivan De Prume getting paid fifty bucks to do a drum roll for Savatage

Bela Lugosi’s emigration from Hungary to New Orleans and up northward to Broadway, and westard to Hollywood

The horrific violence after WW1 that forced Bela out of his home country - The Red Terror vs The White Terror, 1917-1919

The many themes and tropes of the “White Zombie” film that resonated with American audiences in 1932

A 1990 interview with Rob from a black & white zine

Sean’s relationship with Al Jourgensen, and his supposed, alleged, confrontation with Rob that maybe totally might have partially happened

A 1994 guitar extravaganza featuring Jay Yuenger and John Christ of Danzig featuring my very professional voice acting

And WAY MORE of course, because you can see the running time of this thing is bloated and engorged like any decent Soul Crushing Psycho-Head Blowout in Pig Heaven should be!

And this, my friends, is only part ONE. UNO. EIN. UNE. WAHID. UNA. IKA. BIR.

Get Sean's book and other stuff here

My source for J's narrative, his old blog. Picture links currently broken as all hell

1990 Propaganda profile featuring White Zombie, Danzig, Soundgarden, Faith No More

31 Aug 2021AC/DC and Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive #101:38:05

Like early AC/DC? Good! This one's for you. Like behind-the-scenes stories about filming movies that were huge disasters? This one's also for you! There's going to be a whole other episode after this one covering the non-glory that is post-"For Those About To Rock" and pre-"Razor's Edge" AC/DC, as well as more details about the filming and production of Maximum Overdrive. So stay tuned and stay fueled up, friends.

02 Jun 2024La Bamba! (1987) #2 | Ritchie Valens & Luis Valdez03:04:40

Today we finish up Ritchie's story with some more background on the filmmaker and the movie I've come to love even more and apparently get goddamn defensive about.

  • Reviewing the legacy of the film via a look back with Valdez and Lou Diamond Phillips
  • TV Tropes about "La Bamba!"
  • My takeaways about the making of the film in 3 parts
  • A look back at Luis Valdez's career and activism featuring a note about his cousin ("that vato?") Caesar Chavez and the work of Teatro Campesino
  • A brief look at the historical significance of American Pauchocos with a detour into some James Ellroy because I wanted to and it's my show, dammit
  • More of Ritchie Valens' life story and rock n' roll legacy continued from last episode
  • Me getting REAL cranky about a douchey Pitchfork article I read while conducting research for this one
  • An update on the show's ongoing relationship with Radish Mattress, Inc

14 Feb 2024Quick Announcement: A Free Patreon Episode and updates on the next release00:02:20

The next episode(s) featuring Floyd, The Dead and Zabriskie Point are mostly done and in final editing stages. I haven't decided whether or not to split it into two releases or keep all 4-5 hrs together yet. I figure if you love Pink Floyd and/or the Grateful Dead then having a healthy attention span is probably not an issue for you.

In the meantime, please avail yourself of one free episode from the Patreon feed to tide you over and tickle your brain parts that love rock history:

07 Jan 2024The Airing of Grievances episode!01:56:15

It's time to get cranky! I read internet exchanges with a psycho on Reverb.com and a former child star on Instagram as well as quotes from Steve Albini and a section of the recent Megadeth book featuring Dave Mustaine's racist-ass wife. Throughout it all, you will also hear some delightful children's poems to offset the awfulness.  Please check the links below for a few things I'm proud of taking part in:
