11 Jun 2024 | More Than a Rugby Player: Sam Smith’s Story of Pressure, Purpose, and Personal Transformation | 00:48:55
Join us for an incredibly moving episode with Sam Smith, a former professional rugby player for Harlequins and Worcester Warriors, as he shares his journey on his first podcast. Sam reflects on his early life in a happy, loving family home. At the age of 11, his mum became ill, and he learned to develop a sixth sense to gauge what he would find behind the door when returning from school. He was always striving to make his family happy and constantly felt like he was failing. This pattern of being a "doer" and pleasing people defined much of his life. His self-worth became deeply intertwined with his identity as a rugby player, leading to immense pressure and a need to please his coaches and parents. Sam candidly shares moments of disillusionment, like spending Wednesdays hungover in bed—an alarming sign for a professional athlete that shouldn't have been ignored. Due to an injury, Sam had to retire from rugby early, and he dived into entrepreneurship, turning his love of coffee into a successful business. However, did it provide Sam with what he was looking for? Despite knowing his parents were supportive, he struggled to find the words to ask for help. Post-rugby life brought anger and frustration. When he asked for help, he received sterile CBT sessions, leading him to believe he was the problem. The turning point came when he met Hugh, someone who helped make him feel normal and understand he wasn't alone. Now, Sam emphasises the importance of purpose—something you feel in your bones and soul. He aims to help others wake up to the stories they tell themselves, leading to life-changing realisations. Tune in to hear Sam’s honest reflections on life before, during, and after sports, finding true purpose, and the courage to ask for help. His story has it all: laughter, tears, resilience, self-awareness, and the magic of discovering what truly matters. You’re about to meet Jack Suddaby, a man who went from causing chaos on the airwaves to navigating parental heartbreak, all while being ADHD to stay in any box. Jack describes his future self as being a little bit silly, carefree and being surrounded by like minded people as a community. This episode is packed with raw honesty, laughs, and the kind of life lessons you don’t see coming. Jack doesn’t hold back as he talks about his ADHD, the stigma he felt around it growing up, and why he refused to let anyone stick a label on him until he was older. He shares his journey into the world of radio (spoiler: there were many wrong buttons pressed and a fair bit of panic), but also dives into deeper territory, like the moment his parents got back together, only to split up again. It’s a heartbreak story, but it’s also real and relatable. Jack talks about his therapy journey and reveals the surprising impact it had on his life and relationships and reasons why he started. But don’t think this episode is all heavy. Jack is the ultimate charmer, he’ll have you laughing as he talks about navigating life with ADHD and why he has so much respect for women (spoiler: it involves periods and communication). Oh, and community? For Jack, it’s all about being with good people, surrounded by trees, and staying a bit cheeky, no he doesn't hug trees for a living.
This episode is a little bit chaotic, silly and heartfelt that proves you don’t need to follow the script to find happiness. Guest Jack Suddaby Listen on Apple Podcasts:

07 May 2024 | Beyond Sport Alex Ayin's Search for Fulfilment, High Performance and Progress - Is It Ever Enough? | 00:50:47
A deep and personal conversation with Alex Ayin where he unravels a journey he hasn't previously shared. Alex found validation through sports, a thread that weaves throughout. In parts, our conversation evolves into a coaching session, delving deeper into Alex's identity. We explore his struggles with fitting into school, navigating his mixed heritage, and managing overt racism. Alex had to stop playing Rugby in his teens due to an injury, where he started Water Polo. Inspiration for Alex stems from his grandfathers — one a WWII survivor and the stories he shared, the other who bravely moved the family from Africa to the UK. Yet, Alex's path to success wasn't linear. Despite starting on a very prestigious graduate scheme at Virgin, he dropped out of the programme to the disbelief of his family. This is a very reflective conversation where he shares he stopped drinking, leaving Social Chain and questions his identity and type of person he wants to be. He shares a concept of diversification of identity - you as a human aren't classified as just one thing. Alex shares his journey and the values and beliefs from family first, outworking the competition reframing negative experiences and finally the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, a lesson passed down from both his parents and as a United fan how the legendary football manager Alex Ferguson did. For Alex, sport isn't just about physical activity; they're integral to the fabric of his life. Tune in to hear this reflective and honest conversation. Jason's path didn't lead him to university, but does that define him? It did give him a bit of a chip on his shoulder. After leaving school, he was presented with two options: go to university or join the Navy.
Despite lacking a university degree, Jason had a wealth of real-life experiences and a valuable skillset. He took chances, worked hard and networked tirelessly. He landed a position in a prestigious consulting firm that typically only hired graduates. Was it luck, or were they lucky to have him? Now, his definition of success has shifted. He values spending quality time with his wife and daughter, prioritising activities he genuinely enjoys and seeking these out. This episode focuses on Jason's journey as an introvert, the lessons learned from mentors, struggles with anxiety, how therapy shaped his leadership skills, the emotional impact of a miscarriage, and his ongoing experiments in life. 03 Dec 2024 | Emma Freivogel's Daring Quest for Hidden Talent | 01:03:25
This isn’t just another episode on A Class of Their Own Podcast it’s a rallying cry. Emma Freivogel, CEO of Radical Recruit, is on a mission to prove that the people society overlooks are often the ones with the most to offer. Emma’s story starts in a home where love had no limits. Her parents ran an open-door policy, well her mum did and her dad fed any kid in need could walk through their door. But with generosity came tension: “Why can’t it just be us?” Emma reflects on the push and pull of family values that shaped her worldview. Emma learned early on that dignity, respect, and love can transform lives. From rebuilding her own life in Oz to London to creating Radical Recruit, Emma knows what it means to fight for a second chance. She’s built a movement that connects people leaving prison, struggling with homelessness, or simply ignored by the system with employers willing to see their potential. Hiring for potential, not pedigree. This episode will move you, challenge you, and leave you questioning why you’re not doing more to help. The people Emma works with aren’t charity cases, they’re fighters, survivors, and problem solvers. They just need a chance. Her approach is raw, unapologetic, and urgent, because if we don’t act now, more lives are failed and slip through the cracks. What to Expect: - The raw truth about resilience and redemption: Emma shares her personal journey from chaos to clarity. - Why privilege needs a rebrand: She explains how we can all use what we have to make space for others. - Radical Recruit’s game-changing model: Practical, bold, and results-driven support for people society writes off. - Small wins, big impact: Why even the tiniest opportunities can be life-changing for someone starting over. Why This Matters: This isn’t just about giving people a shot; it’s about redefining opportunity. The clock is ticking. Every day, more people are left behind simply because no one believes in them. Emma’s work shows what’s possible when you stop making excuses and start taking action. What you can do to help: Listen. Share. Act. Emma doesn’t want sympathy, for her radicals she wants change. And change starts right here, with you. Whether you’re an employer, a leader, or someone who believes in fairness, this episode will challenge you to show up and think differently. You’ll walk away inspired, but more importantly, you’ll walk away knowing you can do something. 26 Nov 2024 | Conversations Most Men Avoid and Desperately Need | 00:43:16
This week's episode brings you the kind of conversations most men avoid-and desperately need. It's raw, it's real, and it might just be the push you need to stop bottling things up and start talking. From living in shame to finding purpose, these stories challenge everything we think about what it means to be "strong." Josh White opens up about how being the life of the party masked crippling anxiety, fear, and feelings of failure. Diagnosed with ADHD, he was labelled, judged, and left searching for help in all the wrong places. "I was scared of life," Josh admits. But smashing through his comfort zones helped him rewrite his story. Real Hackney Dave had it all on paper-car, kids, house-but felt miserable and ashamed of the life he'd built. He hit rock bottom, tore up the rulebook, and rebuilt a life that feels authentic, one motorbike ride at a time. His message is blunt: stop waiting for permission to live your life. Joe Roberts-Walker shares the heartbreak of losing his brother and the unexpected beauty of finding hope in his niece. "Grief is something we're never prepared for," he says, but Joe's story is one of love, legacy, and learning to hold pain and joy in the same hands. Paraag Amin takes us into the pressure cooker of cultural expectations, from childhood responsibility to adult burnout. After hitting a breaking point on his 40th birthday, he realised life isn't about titles or achievements but the way you make others feel. Why This Episode Matters: These aren't just stories, they're lifelines. They remind us that no one has it all figured out and that opening up isn't just brave; it's necessary. What You'll Gain: - A glimpse into the lives of men who've faced the fear, grief, and shame that we rarely talk about. - The courage to reflect on your own struggles and the strength to start your own conversations. - Hope that even in your darkest moments, there's a way forward. If you're willing to talk. Why Listen Now? Because every second you wait is another second pretending you're fine when you're not. These men didn't have all the answers, but they had the courage to start. Now it's your turn. Your story matters, and someone out there needs to hear it. Start sharing and talking today. 08 Oct 2024 | The Power of Now vs Outdated Masculinity Ideals | 00:54:44
What happens when you’ve lived your whole life behind a mask maybe one involving the idealism of masculinity - was that toxic masculinity. Then one day it falls away? In this gripping episode, Amardeep Parmar sits down to talk about the moment everything changed and the surprising lessons he’s learned from it all. From his early years growing up in Barkingside, East London, faking confidence to fit in, to losing friends to suicide, Amardeep’s story is one of constant reinvention. He candidly shares how, even though he seemed to have it all together on the outside, inside he was spiralling. His struggles with anxiety, and faking it and the crushing pressure to appear strong offer a raw, unfiltered look at how toxic masculinity nearly took over. But it’s not all heavy. Amardeep’s breakthrough moment comes with a decision that will surprise you: instead of drowning in the past or fearing the future, he chooses to live "aggressively" in the present. And that’s just the start. Amardeep shares how, many moments in his life started as side projects, experimenting that led to finding his magic. He grew faster than all fellow writers except for one, Barack Obama, the US President. What was he writing about you'll have to watch the episode to find out. The episode takes a surprising turn when Amardeep talks about the impact of his father's death, a moment that rocked his world and everything changed again. What was meant to be a side hustle, BAE HQ, started as a legacy project, a way to honour his dad's belief in him. But even more unexpected? How this tragedy became the catalyst for Amardeep's radical shift in perspective on work, grief, and self-worth. And, just when you think you know where the story is headed, Amardeep flips the script again, opening up about the strong female influences in his life, how they’ve reshaped his views on vulnerability, and what he really thinks about traditional 'alpha' masculinity - especially in a Punjabi background. 19 Aug 2024 | Unlocking Change: Privilege in Action with Grace Osborne | 00:47:23
In this episode, we chat with Grace Osborne about the challenges of privilege, social mobility, and navigating societal expectations. Grace shares her story of growing up with privilege, going to private school, and coming from a family where university education was the natural course, 5 generations of women in her family went to University. She talks about the naivety that often comes with privilege and the guilt and shame she sometimes feels. Grace is passionate about her work in social mobility, it's a big part of who she is. She reflects on the stark contrasts between her upbringing and the reality many others face, a difference she only truly understood as she got out of her bubble. Her work has made her realise how privilege can shape your confidence and opportunities, and how family and society often value prestigious careers like banking or consulting over social impact. A key moment in Grace’s life was when she realised that everyone in her circle had been to university—a norm far from the reality for many others. This highlighted for her how deeply privilege influences our lives and the unconscious biases that come with it. She stresses the importance of getting out of your own bubble, perhaps through volunteering, to see the world from different perspectives. Grace also talks about the dynamics within her family and social circles, where discussions about careers and salaries are common, reinforcing the pressure to succeed. She touches on conversations had to describe the work she does as "window dressing" for the company she works for. She helps the organsation look good but lack real substance. Throughout our conversation, Grace reflects on how cultural fit has played a big role in her life. She recognises that her ability to thrive in certain environments and at work has been influenced by her privileged background, her ability to fit in and understand the social capital this privilege gives her. She is also critical of these norms and how they affect and impact others ability to get ahead. Key Takeaways: Grace’s story offers a thoughtful look at how privilege shaped her life and why it’s so important to work towards a fairer society. Tune in to hear her insights on dealing with these challenges and her dedication to making a difference. 15 Oct 2024 | Breaking Boxes and Beats: Santanna Oush on Life, Love, and DJing | 01:04:18
This episode of A Class of Their Own is one you won’t want to miss. We sit down with Santanna Oush, the DJ and in her own words the most motivational person in the room. Santanna's story is a rollercoaster of resilience, creativity, and bold self-expression. This episode will have you curious and wondering where we will go next. Buckle up, because this conversation will take you from the humble beginnings selling potatoes out of a blue van to lighting up stages at 14 – all while navigating the complexities of foster care, sexism in the music industry, and an inner journey to balance darkness and light. Santanna opens up about her early years growing up in foster care. It wasn’t easy, there were moments of heartbreak, like watching her mother suffer and being unable to help, how she was one of the lucky one to get professional foster parents like Sue and John who provided her with the safety and space to thrive. We dive deep into how these experiences shaped her, revealing that it wasn’t just a tough upbringing; it was also where she learned resilience, hope, and self-reliance. And then there’s the music. From a young age, Santanna had a natural ear for sound, turning heads at her first gig in Leamington Spa when she was only 14. But the road to becoming a full-time DJ wasn’t as smooth as the beats she drops today. She sold potatoes, BIC pens, insurance, sky dishes - I think she could probably sell ice to eskimos. Picture this: Friday night after her day finished at a business magazine the scenes were like The Wolf of Wall Street, fast-paced, chaotic, and sometimes teetering on the edge of control. She was living for the evenings, that was her survival and yet she had to navigate her family’s history of addiction, something she’s always conscious of, even today in an industry known for its temptations DJing. Today, she unapologetically owns her space in a male-dominated DJ industry. She has founded OUSHE, giving female DJs a platform to DJ in some of the top bars and clubs. She has a regular residency at Pikes in Ibiza, where she elevates upand coming DJs. But it’s not just DJing for Santanna, this is the first time she’s shares her voice and story. She's actually really shy. Santanna openly shares all of who she is from love, relationships and and her s**ual orientation. She refuses to be put in a box. What will you gain from listening? Expect a candid, unfiltered conversation that touches on themes of resilience, overcoming adversity, and following your passion. Whether you’re in the music industry or simply looking for inspiration to push past life’s obstacles, Santanna’s story is a refreshing reminder that success comes from embracing every part of your journey, accepting the difficult bits and loving yourself and others around you. Why should you listen? If you want to hear about the highs and lows of making it in the DJ industry, staying grounded in a world of temptations, and learning how to embrace both your inner darkness and light, then hit play now. Santanna Oush is living proof that you don’t have to fit into anyone’s box to make your mark on the world. Santanna #YouAreAClassOfYourOwn. Oush. Guest Santanna Oush Listen on Apple Podcasts:
