aBlogtoWatch Weekly: The Scariest Watch Ariel Has Ever Seen, A Record-Breaking Richard Mille, And Has Tudor Officially Become A Rolex Homage Brand?

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David sit down to talk about some of the most noteworthy new releases and trending stories from the greater world of watches. The trio starts the show by talking about a timepiece that has surfaced from a dark corner of history that Ariel describes as the scariest watch he has ever seen, before moving on to collectively speculating about the future of watch prices and retail availability. Rick asks the question of whether or not consumer trends may shift to the point where people are consolidating their collections and only buying grail pieces before the conversation ultimately shifts towards trying to hash out what actually classifies an individual as a watch enthusiast.

While there is no surprise guest on this week’s show, there are plenty of new releases to discuss, and Rick, Ariel, and David kick off the new watch roundup by talking about how the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari recently claimed the record for the world’s thinnest watch before getting into how anOrdain can keep up with demand for its small-batch enamel dials and whether or not the novelty of having a white ceramic watch like the new IWC “Lake Tahoe” will eventually wear off after several years of ownership. Lastly, no conversation of new releases from this past week would be complete without discussing the new Tudor Ranger, and the trio addresses the question of whether or not the new watch is actually worth all the excitement, and whether or not Tudor has officially become a Rolex homage brand.

Each week the editors of the timepiece-centric publication aBlogtoWatch.com sit down to discuss some of the latest new releases and hottest industry stories from in the aBlogtoWatch Weekly news podcast program. 08 Sep 2022Are Watchmakers Listening To Watch Buyers? Plus New Releases From Tudor, Montblanc, Carl F. Bucherer, And Mr. Jones, Plus A Quick Word From Mrs. aBlogtoWatch Weekly00:55:05

In this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David sit down with Paul (@f1ptb) to discuss some of their favorite new releases from Geneva Watch Days, along with the latest news and reviews from the greater world of watches. To kick off the show, our quartet of hosts briefly discuss the prices of cheeseburgers in Geneva before diving into a conversation about whether or not watch brands are actually listening to the people who buy their products and the overall influence of the collecting community within the industry. The discussion then turns to some of the watches that serve as examples of when brands have given the public more-or-less exactly what it wants, with the new Tudor Pelagos 39 serving as a perfect instance of how a company can look at the data and create a watch that is (almost) exactly like what people have been asking them to make for years.

After getting into the details over whether or not the Tudor Pelagos 39 should even be considered a new watch when it is really more of an extension to the existing range, the show takes a brief moment to listen to a message from Rick’s wife, Mrs. ABlogtoWatch Weekly. During last week’s episode, Ariel brought up the point about how the western world needs to find new occasions to buy watches for each other, and somehow Rick forgot to mention that he and his wife recently took their daughter watch shopping to get her a graduation present. After getting filled in on the experience and learning that Rick’s daughter also has expensive taste when it comes to timepieces, it’s back to new watch releases and discussing a few personal favorites from Geneva Watch Days. We learn that David’s favorite new launch from the show was the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Sejima Special Edition, before our hosts dive into a conversation about the Golden Hour from Mr. Jones Watches, the new Nicolas Rieussec Chronographs from Montblanc, and whether or not Carl F. Bucherer should be considered a retailer brand or watch manufacturer.

06 Jul 2023Sorry–Rolex Not Found, Overripe Strawberries, And A New Game01:17:09

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, Ariel is recovering from his LVMH outing, so Rick and David are joined by Alex, a watchmaker and co-founder of the Fifth Wrist website and co-host of its companion podcast. The trio gets right into it with a group tirade on the insurmountable task of finding a specific watch on modern brand sites, much less getting any info on that watch. Then it's on to some new releases, including yet another MoonSwatch, a new racing Tudor, and a rack of Omegas. Then it's on to a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe with some of the other recent reviews and releases. And then Ariel joins!

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, Rick and David replace Ariel with Simon from Escapement24 and Alex from Fifth Wrist Radio. The team dive right in with a discussion of IYKYK watches, and everyone takes issue with the celebration of brands making small changes to existing models and charging an outrageous premium. Then, it's on to another round of Watches and Wonders 2023 prognostication, with three more exhibiting brands. Of course, there's a discussion of new releases and at the top of the pile is a curious piece that looks like a cat. Plus, is Baume and Mercier finally hitting its stride?

It's back to last week as Ariel is crowned the winner of another round of Guess the Seiko (Price), which evolves into a discussion on video games. Things are wrapped with a talk about new watches from Tudor (sort of) and Christopher Ward (that couldn't be discussed for the show but is live now). 20 Oct 2022Integrated Bracelets, Mario Kart Tourbillon Watches, Strict NDA’s, And New Releases from Bremont, Tag Heuer, Hublot, Timex, Tissot, Longines, Patek Philippe, And More00:56:10

For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, David is away on a secret trip where he has signed a strict non-disclosure agreement and can’t tell anyone where he is going, so Ariel and Rick are joined by Simon from Escapement24 to talk about all of the new releases from this week in the world of watches. After briefly discussing NDA’s and what type of agreement David might have signed, our hosts turn their attention to integrated bracelet sports watches, and how the widespread popularity of the genre is slightly puzzling given that no one actually wears a metal bracelet watch as their preferred timepiece while playing sports. From there, the conversation shifts to how it seems to be exclusively watches that remain highly desirable when they show heavy signs of age, and how the concept of desirable patina seems to be virtually non-existent within the traditional jewelry industry. Next, we get a bit of last week’s show this week, as we circle back to note that Invicta is actually one of the brands that engrave its name on the side of watch cases, along with mentioning that the recent change in UK law that was going to make it an excellent place for Americans to purchase luxury watches has recently been reversed, meaning that there is no reason for us to book a flight to visit the AD.

The discussion then shifts to all of the new watch releases from this week, starting with the TAG Heuer Formula 1 x Mario Kart Chronograph Tourbillon. After briefly contemplating the type of buyer this watch is intended to target, our hosts get into the details behind how our global economy makes it hard for brands to control their image within specific markets, along with how certain releases are simply intended for particular regions but end up getting seen by a global audience due to how everything is connected. Next, attention turns to the new Bremont releases and how the Supernova and its integrated bracelet fit into the rest of the brand’s current lineup. Our hosts examine the Hublot Big Bang E FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 smartwatch within the context of what responsibilities luxury brands have when it comes to the support of global issues. The show was supposed to end with reviews of three different chronographs at different price points from Timex, Tissot, and Longies. However, just as our hosts were just about to stop recording, Patek Philippe announced a handful of new watches, including the new Nautilus ref. 5811 in white gold.

13 Jan 2025153. The Rocky Horror Picture Show Of Watches01:20:20

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is out sick (but he is listening). David and Ripley are present and accounted for, and Ariel jumps right in with a discussion of some of his predictions for 2025. He thinks the theme song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best background for this discussion because we're in somewhat of a time warp. His top five trends? Listen in to find out. Hint: There are five, and he goes through them one by one and asks the others what they think of his powers of prophecy. Ariel then turns attention to two fun year-end roundups, the 10 articles we published in 2024 that got the most eyeballs and our top 10 articles with the highest number of reader comments. Next up, there's a discussion of the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon watch, and the guys go back and forth on the merits of this particular design. What about the TAG Heuer's return as the official Formula 1 timekeeper? David gives an overview of what this article covers, both historically and in the present. MB&F's new M.A.D. Edition watches are the next topic of conversation, along with the various ways you can get your hands on one. Talk gets racy with consideration of Breguet's Classique 7145 Lunar New Year 2025 (luxe House of Slytherin, says Ripley). There's a segway to convo about American watchmaking, and Ripley elaborates on Mike's thesis: There will be no full-scale return to American watchmaking. Instead of Hit, Miss, Maybe, the team ends the show by looking at the latest Favre Leuba.

24 Jan 2025155. Tiffany, Tees, Tudor, And Trump 2.001:26:44

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the gang is all together again and settled into their respective rectangles, all shockingly in their home bases. Rick begins by segueing from the live broadcast of the show (after the clap-in) to reflect on the previous conversation about blue foods being the "taste of 'merica). When they get down to business, the first item on the agenda is the Tudor Black Bay Chrono Flamingo-Blue watch, and it suddenly seems that blue is a theme! But make no mistake; this is NOT "Tiffany blue." But it's really, really close. Next up is a bargain new-release: the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite — a bargain only because it's in steel and is a manual-wind. But it exceeds Ripley's expectations, not only in price, which is saying a lot. David then talks about the special laid-back demeanor of Chopard as a brand. He walks us through his hands-on of the L.U.C. Lunar One Perpetual Calendar watches, which he saw in the metal last week at the Chopard manufacture. Let's just cut to the chase: David says it's a "bonkers" watch. The guys have some fun going around the virtual room showing us what they're wearing today (both Ripley and Ariel are wearing the Casio ring watch), and David is wearing the cheapest diamond-set watch in the world. He also reports that he saw a Trump watch in the wild, and the team grills him on deets. For some godforsaken reason, this leads them down the rabbit hole of the Trump watch website. Weird! Thank goodness they finally turn the page and play Hit, Miss Maybe.

14 Feb 2025158. Kill A Brand, Revive a Brand, Mash-Potato A Brand01:04:17

This week onaBlogtoWatchWeekly, the only two usual suspects are Rick and David.Ariel and Ripley are in flight, or fleeing, or otherwise elsewhere. They are, instead, joined by semi-regular, non-suspect Azad and Kevin, and then surpriseguest, Leslie. All of the Euro-men are complaining about the weather ('tis therainy season in the UK, ya know). They get right down to business with adiscussion of the news that Rolex has retired its Carl F. Bucherer brand, andthere are various degrees of lament in the room. Next up, a look at Breitling'srevival of the Gallet brand. The guys muse about how they'll position thesewatches. Then, they discuss Ariel's most recent column in his absence. He asksthe question, "Are Swiss luxury watch brands engaging consumersenough?" The new game, which seems to have taken off, ensues:Judge theCollab. Fun! But where did fan-favoriteHit, Miss, Maybe go?And will it ever return?

31 Oct 2024143. Stuck In Patek Prison With Gerald Ratner In A 45-Minute Timezone.01:11:41

Here are the show notes. Do you have a title yet?

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel, David, and Ripley, as per usual, and they start things off by discussing, um, time. How unusual! Well, the subject is the time changes in Europe and the U.S., which marginally has to do with watches, although, honestly, there's no segue except for a brief foray into those rare parts of the world that actually run on 30-minute time zone differentials. It all comes 'round.

One of the more interesting sidebars that awaits you is convo about the failures of AI when searching for watch info. Take heed!

The team gets down to business with an in-depth look at some of the watches we've covered this week, including the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite watch. Next up, hear the guys' thoughts on the Patek Philippe Cubitus Watch, the brand's first new collection in 25 years. David is here in the flesh to discuss his most recent "Grinding Gears" feature article, and then they dip into the latest by Laurent Ferrier.

They wrap up with the game we've all come to want, need, crave: Hit Miss Maybe.

08 Jan 2023How Ulysse Nardin Shattered The Mold With The Freak00:42:53
This special edition of the aBlogtoWatch Weeklypodcast is brought to you by Ulysse Nardin. Rick and David sit down with Jean-Christophe Sabatier, Chief Product Officer at Ulysse Nardin, to talk about the incredible Ulysse Nardin Freak family of watches, how they came to be, and how they changed the watch industry forever. Listen below or on the player of your choice. Ulysse Nardin is a historic, technologically advanced producer of mechanical luxury watches, headquartered in Le Locle and Neuchatel, Switzerland. The independent watchmaker has made a name for itself through its thousands of award-winning marine chronometers in the past, and through its innovative mechanical watches from the 1980s to date. For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Jose Pereztroika of Perezcope. From there, the conversation moves on to the surprise new anniversary-edition Paul Newman Daytona from Rolex, before shifting to the overlap between watch media and events following Ariel’s recent interview with Zach Weiss from Worn & Wound. To wrap up the show, David recaps his recent trip to Paris with Breguet and also offers his insight on the brand’s recently-released Type XX chronograph, which has become a rather passionate talking point within the industry. 28 Jul 2022Rolex To Produce 30% More Watches, Collecting With An Unlimited Budget, Plus Reviews From MB&F, Formex, Raymond Weil, G-Shock, And Zodiac00:59:10
In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and Ariel sit down to talk about some of the latest news stories and releases from the world of watches. The duo kick off the show by talking about how Ariel severely needs an assistant before briefly touching on whether or not the GPHG awards actually mean anything and whether or not Tudor is pushing the boundaries enough with its watch designs given the recent release of the Ranger. From there, the pair dives into talking about Rolex’s brand-new factory, its plans to increase production by 30%, and whether or not this actually means that people will finally start being able to buy the watches that they want from authorized retailers and boutiques. While there is no surprise guest on this week’s episode, there are plenty of new reviews and watch releases, and Rick and Ariel kick off the roundup by talking about the Formex Reef GMT and Ariel’s hands-on review of the Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 within the context of the new model the brand will be designing in collaboration with the aBlogtoWatch community, which will be drawing its main inspiration from 1980s new-wave synth music. The duo also discusses the new Bamford x G-Shock collaboration and the time when Ariel’s got a chance to see the MB&F Horological Machine 9 Sapphire Vision HM9-SV, along with the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf “Whitecap” and how the herd mentality of the collecting community can impact the discussions that surround various watches and their respective manufacturers 20:52 Watch Review: Formex Reef GMT Automatic Chronometer 300M https://www.ablogtowatch.com/watch-review-formex-reef-gmt-automatic-chronometer-300m/ 27:10 Hands-On: Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-raymond-weil-freelancer-chronograph-7780-watch/ 31:30 Bamford And G-Shock Unveil The DW-6900BWD-1ER Collaboration Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/bamford-and-g-shock-unveil-the-dw-6900bwd-1er-collaboration-watch/ 41:40 Hands-On: MB&F Horological Machine 9 Sapphire Vision HM9-SV Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-mbf-horological-machine-9-sapphire-vision-hm9-sv-watch/ 49:53 Hands-On: Zodiac Super Sea Wolf ZO9291 "Whitecap" https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-zodiac-super-sea-wolf-zo9291-whitecap/

19 Jan 2023Rolex V Casio Battle Royale, $1m Vintage Reissue With 40,000 Feet Of Water Resistance , Protecting Your Watches From Ninjas, Horological Toyotathon, And Defending The TAG Heuer Solargraph00:57:32

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, Ariel, David, and Rick are joined by Jose Pereztroika of Perezcope! The team talks about three races they hope will stop before they finish: the race to the top (of the grey market), the race to the archives (for reissues), and the race to the bottom (of the ocean). That discussion branches off into vintage watches, auctions, and Jose's favorite release of 2022. Of course, how could Shakira not come up in a watch podcast, so the guys weigh in on whether they'd buy a Rolex or a Casio if they could only have one or the other. And if you can imagine, there were even more Seikos than were discussed last week, though the ones mentioned this week aren't for sale, sadly. The show wraps up with some top picks from LVMH Watch Week. Plus, another round of Guess the Price!

13 Oct 2022Sleeping With The Enemy And The Oris Bear, The Faux Patina Debate, And New Watches From Seiko And Tag Heuer, Plus The Economics Of The Luxury Watch Industry With Rob Corder From WatchPro00:56:27

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Rob Corder from WatchPro. To kick off the show, we get a quick discussion about the various gifts that watch companies have given throughout the years, including Rob’s favorite Oris Bear pajamas, and this ultimately leads to the question of what would Ariel do with a life-size stature of the Oris Bear if he were to be gifted one for the holidays. From there, it’s a deep dive into the economic side of the luxury watch industry, and Rob explains which markets are still seeing growth, along with why there will always be differences and lag in the reported figures for Swiss watch exports compared to the actual consumer behavior that can be observed within local markets. The discussion then gets into why the United States has a good chance of being positioned to be the dominant market in the near future, and how some recent changes in legislature might make the UK a great destination for Americans to buy luxury watches.

After wrapping up the conversation about all things related to the business side of the watch industry, our hosts then turn their attention to the ongoing faux patina debate that was recently addressed on the site, and they try to explain why vintage-inspired lume has become such a controversial point within the greater collector and enthusiast community. Next, we learn that Ariel has recently been sleeping with the Apple Watch Series 8 to assess its sleep tracking capabilities, and he reports back on his findings to answer the key question of whether or not Apple’s latest smartwatch actually knows when you are asleep. After briefly discussing press trips and watch events, along with what the actual purpose of them is within the modern watch media industry, it’s time to look at some of the new releases from this past week, including the numerous new watches from Seiko and the limited edition Tag Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 watch. After collectively agreeing that Seiko’s pricing structure can be a bit all over the place, and that the brand puts out so many watches that it can actually make choosing one a difficult task, it's a closer look at the Tag Heuer Carrera within the context of automotive culture, and why vintage Porsche is so popular among today’s car collectors. Wrapping up the episode is a quick look ahead to Ariel’s upcoming trip to Italy with Jacob & Co. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Godfather, where Rob will also be attending, and Rick brings up the question as to whether or not either of them needs to be worried about waking up with the head of the Oris Bear in their bed.

21 Mar 2025163. F1 Paddock Club To Cashmere Polo Club, Feeding Back On Panerai.com, And Wotto M.A.D Max01:13:48

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the team isnow three. Where's Ariel? Rumor has it he's in Thailand, watch capital of....nowhere! We hope he's relaxing at a White Lotus hotel. Ripley is chilling inhis panic room, and Rick is home under the gray Scotland sky. David appears tobe having a normal kind of day. As you might guess, Formula 1 is the talk atthe top of the show, and Ripley and Rick debrief on the standings. Rick pivotsto the news of Frédéric Arnaud leaving LVMH, which leads David to surmise thatcompeting Richemont brands might be getting wise to the problem of"overlords" and cutting out middle management. This slippery slopeleads the guys to the Panerai website and a discussion of price-to-water-resistance ratio, if such a thing exists. Next, suddenly, aguest appears! It's Guy Blaskey of Detrash, a sustainability-focused brand that makes watches out of trash. On to talk of recent hands-on reviews, starting with the MB&F M.A.D. 2green watch, an homage to 1990s club culture. They turn their attention to anew release, the King Seiko Vanac watches, honing in on the excessive thickness of this time-only timepiece series. Hit, Miss, or Maybe? Listen in to find out. Switching gears to our newest game, Judge the Collab, the guys weigh on on the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic Wotto limited edition. There are vast discrepancies! Watches & Wonders is in full swing, as are the hot takes! Rick wrangles the usual suspects (and some potato-quality internet connections) for an unscripted, no-holds-barred roundup of standout releases, questionable design choices, and horological head-scratchers.

Highlights:

  • 🕰️ Rolex Land-Dweller takes center stage—brilliant innovation or Tissot cosplay?

  • 💥 The Dynapulse escapement has David calling it a "quantum leap."

  • 🍯 Gold rush! Matt swoons over three standout gold watches.

  • 🤔 Tag Heuer Solargraph – solar-powered F1 nostalgia or just plastic fantastique?

  • 🧮 JLC’s Reverso Minute Repeater – love it, but don’t touch it.

  • 💸 IWC goes full tech flex with an 80k perpetual chrono that no one can read.

  • 🚽 Bathroom-scale vibes: Bremont and Cartier get dunked on for jump hour designs.

  • 12 Sep 2024136. Black Is The New Black, Apple v Audemars, Form v Function And David Is Feeling Sad01:15:37

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel, Ripley, and David, as per usual. After some chat about Jeff Goldblum's new show, Chaos, in which a certain Casio timepiece figures prominently, Ariel and Ripley explain why they're exhausted. They've just returned from Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, where the brand debuted two new Apple Watch models. Because they drove up and back in a 12-hour round-trip loop, they were pooped. Nonetheless, they both had much to say about these two new watches, not to mention Apple's security system. David also discussed how some traditional watch brands frown upon watch media covering smartwatches at all — obviously, an interest for many of our readers. Moving on to a release at the opposite end of the spectrum, the team looks at the new Biver Automatique Watches, which Ariel thinks are "nice" in their design to be affordable. Ripley feels sure we'll see the same movement used in the Automatiques appear in other iterations in the near future. The guys have fun with this week's round of "Guess the Price of the Seiko," for which there's a $90,000 price gap among the guesses, so listen in to see who wins and who's way off base. As always, they end with a fun round of "Hit, Miss, Maybe." 0:00 Introduction 3:32 Hands-On Debut: Apple Watch Series 10 Titanium & Aluminum Smartwatches https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-debut-apple-watch-series-10-aluminum-titanium-smartwatches/ 5:50 Hands-On Debut: Apple Watch Ultra 2 Black DLC Titanium Smartwatch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-debut-apple-watch-ultra-2-black-dlc-titanium-smartwatch/ 24:28 New Release: Biver Automatique Watches https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-biver-automatique-watches/ 33:30 GUESS THE PRICE OF THE SEIKO New Release: Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive 5 Days SLGA025 https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-grand-seiko-evolution-9-collection-spring-drive-5-days-slga025-watch/ 38:10 Hit, Miss, Maybe 45:38 New Release: Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 Forged Carbon Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-tissot-prx-powermatic-80-forged-carbon-watch/ 55:00 New Release: Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph Shades Of Grey Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-audemars-piguet-code-11-59-selfwinding-flying-tourbillon-chronograph-shades-of-grey-watch/ 1:06:00 Apples Watches Part Deux Check out ABTW on YouTube to catch up on the latest episodes of ABTWW, Hit, Miss, Maybe, video reviews, and more. This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the quartet has grown to a quintet, as David, Ariel, Rick, and Ripley are joined by Sylvain Berneron. The group wastes no time in giving Sylvain the mic so he can explain the pricing difference we see in gold watches and everyone gives their thoughts on the precious metal. 25 Nov 2024146. The Return Of Universal Genève, What Is A Watch Review, Actually?, And Why (Not) Buy A Pre-Owned Rolex?01:13:57

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, two of the usual suspects, host Rick and regular commentator David are MIA, either gallivanting or recuperating — or both. So, to mix it up, we have Ariel, Sean, and Ripley, kicking things off with Sean's observation that the news cycle, which usually slows around now each year, is still busily speeding forward in surprising and compelling ways. Ripley is sipping tea instead of Scotch — maybe he hasn't seen the results of the U.S. elections yet.

Ariel cuts to the chase with a discussion of David's article on Universal Genève, which was just purchased and relaunched by Breitling. (Spoiler alert: Sean and Ripley are both fans.) Then, the team gets into a discussion of one of the most discussed articles on ABTW this month: Ariel's Thoughts: What Is (And Isn't) A Watch Review)? Sean explains that the decision to run this article has to do with journalistic integrity, and Ripley underscores the nature of the beast in the context of other industries. Next up is a discussion of the newest

Ferdinand Berthoud Chronomètre FB RES Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition watch, the Citizen Series 8 Collection, and the NOMOS Club Sport neomatik 34.

Ariel has been vocal about his thoughts on the price premiums for pre-owned Rolex watches. Listen in to learn what all the fuss is about. They close with a roundtable on the effects of this trend on other brands. Omg, what? No, Hit, Miss, Maybe? Don't tell Rick!

07 Mar 2025161. Taking Tudor To A Cabin In The Woods, AP's Calendar Chaos, And True Rolex Is Gold Rolex01:00:46

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Ariel calls in from a cabin in the woods, David ishome in Budapest sipping a hot beverage, Rick is at the farm office, and atired Ripley appears to be at home in L.A. — all reprobate seals clapping in,says Rick. Host-with-the-most Rick takes time to explore each person's space, perhaps to delay what's coming next. To wit, David has found a Morgan-Stanley2023-2024 report comparing watch brands, which reveals that the top 50 brandsdropped production of watches by more that 2 million between 2023 and 2024 — astat that causes some alarm — for everyone but Ariel, whose interpretation isthat some of these brands are playing with the notion of scarcity as amarketing strategy. Interesting.... What do the others think of this notion?Rick is struck by the fact the Zenith produced on 10,000 watches. "Shouldwe only talk about Rolex?" he ponders. The only brand that surprises Arielis Tudor, which dropped production by nearly 40 percent. Since Tudor doesn'tget as much"free marketing" as Rolex, maybe it needs to do more onthe marketing front. While you all bookmark this report to ponder later, theteam moves on to discuss some recent articles, starting with, speak of thedevil, the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic "Visa Blue" Master Chronometer, which Ariel likes because it's not for everyone — a "Swiss middle fingerto Omega," as he puts it. Next up is the Rolex Day-Date 36 with Roman Numerals, which David has afascination with — specifically, the deconstructed Roman numerals. AudemarsPiguet released an all-black ceramic Royal Oak Offshore, consensus about which seems tobe that, while it's not particularly new and creative, it's really pretty watchthat honors the brand name in refinement, if ambitiously priced. March L.A.B's new watch, whose name is toolong for Rick and Ariel to bother with, has more fonts than Rick can count. Theshow concludes with a riff on a Mission to Uranus. You'll have to listen to the show find out what that's about.

    05 Oct 2023Longines On A Boat, Getting AP-Curious, And A Tourbillon With Cheese01:03:51

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, it's a full house with Rick, Ariel, and David at it for another hour of horological shenanigans. Then, an exciting event with aBlogtoWatch and Longines...on a boat! Plus new watches from Audemars PiguetBulgari, and Seiko. Finally, another round of Hit, Miss, Maybe (or Happy It Exists).

But it's for charity. Next up in the queue is talk of the end of the Only Watch auction, which would be the end of an era if it had actually been an era. Talk then turns to the GHPG Awards, and Ripley takes note of the brands not participating, and the significance of that in context. The guys briefly touch on the speculative question of how Tr***'s recent election will affect the watch industry. They wrap, as always, with Hit, Miss, Maybe.

06 Oct 2022Pre-Owned Watches Come To Geneva! Plus A G-Shock Factory Restoration Program And New Watches From Omega, Shinola, Hautlence, And More00:53:59

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Cam from the TriWatches Podcast. To kick off the show, our hosts discuss how Geneva is finally going to have its first pre-owned luxury watches event, and ponder what the Swiss version of a pre-owned watches show might look like, given Switzerland’s long-standing reluctance to embrace the secondary market. From there, the conversation shifts to the truth behind the decrease in pre-owned luxury watch prices, and how this recent change is only really allocated to the mega-hype watches that were trading hands for values significantly above their original brand new retail prices. Given that an increasing number of manufacturers are entering the pre-on space themselves, our quartet of hosts tries to answer the question as to whether or not there might ever come a time when we see the entire pre-owned luxury watch industry shift towards an in-house format. After discussing all things related to the pre-owned luxury watch industry, our hosts turn their attention to the new factory restoration program that G-Shock is offering for select vintage collectible models, and how this limited-time program shows a commitment to the brand’s heritage and its dedicated collectors. With the final word said on older watches, Ariel, Rick, David, and Cam turned their attention to new watches, and up first is the all-new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer from Omega. After discussing whether or not the X-33 platform can still be considered a class-leading astronaut’s tool, our hosts decide to discuss the new Shinola Mechanic watches and whether or not these new models represent a new enthusiast-driven direction for the brand.  Closing out this week’s episode is a review of the new Linear Series 1 Tourbillon from Hautlence, and a quick discussion of how this decidedly modern and funky brand fits in with the rest of the various timepieces that occupy a similar space within the industry. As always, Ariel has an exciting upcoming schedule with a dinner for Hublot and a trip to Sicily with Jacob & Co., and there will also be special edition episodes of aBlogtoWatch Weekly coming down the pipeline, with the first one featuring an inside look at Bulgari watches.

27 Oct 2022The Best Rolex Fake Yet? Why All Titanium Isn’t Created Equal Plus What’s Right And Wrong About The New Patek Philippe Watches00:55:59

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is still away in Italy with Jacob & Co. so Rick and David are joined by Sylvain from Breitling. To start the show, our trio of hosts get into a deep discussion about all things related to titanium and watchmaking. Given that titanium watches can exist at a remarkably wide range of different prices, Sylvain offers some insight from a manufacturing perspective on what factors can separate expensive titanium watches from affordable ones, and how differences in the production process itself can ultimately influence both the quality of the titanium and the overall watch. After getting into some of the cost premiums associated with titanium, our trio of hosts discuss the fake letter that was allegedly from Rolex, which was recently making headlines and said that production was going to be cut due to the brand’s efforts to help the Swiss government conserve fuel. After breaking down a few of the reasons why this letter is clearly a fake, we briefly get to hear from a listener who is sending his vintage G-Shock into the select restoration program that was discussed on a previous episode of the show, and we will be circling back later with him to learn more about his experience.

Next is an in-depth conversation about the latest new releases from Patek Philippe, and our hosts offer their opinions about three of the most noteworthy new models that recently joined the brand’s catalog. One of the reasons that Patek Philippe stated for discontinuing the reference 5711 Nautilus was that the brand felt it was becoming too associated with that single model. Given that the new reference 5811 is largely the same watch from a visual perspective, except now 1mm larger and crafted from white gold, hosts discuss whether or not the new reference 5811 is essentially Patek Philippe going back on its word in less than a year. From there, our hosts turn their attention to the rainbow gem-set Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph, and what factors might be responsible for it only having 30 meters of water resistance. To wrap up the conversion, it’s a look at Patek Philippe’s new left-handed, Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph Perpetual Calendar reference 5373P and whether or not the destro configuration is just Patek Philippe copying Rolex’s green GMT-Master II, or if it was actually something that Patek Philippe had planned before.

    10 Apr 2025166: Watches And Wonders: 31% Panic, 69% Champagne01:18:55

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Rick, Ariel, and Ripley launch the show with thevestigial clap-in and get right to the hot topics of the week: Watches &Wonders, of course, and the many varying views on Trump's tariffs and howthey'll affect the watch industry. But first, Ripley puts in a plug for betterswag at the event next year. Underwear and socks would be awesome! He ran outof clean shirts before his flight home, so he was ever-so-grateful for abrand-new Oris t-shirt. And Doxa gave out passport covers so Americans couldobscure their identities — score! Rick asks the rapidly devaluing 64k question:What is the collective sound a gaggle of watch executives makes the day aftertariffs are announced? Ariel observes that already very high prices were apre-emptive strike among said execs, who'll just absorb these new costs. Davidarrives, wondering where the convo is at, and he commiserates on the swagissue. Post-W&W decompression has obviously been needed (folks are giddy!),but the guys DO get down to talking about actual watches — first, through thedoor of Ariel's parallels with The Brutalist. You'll simply have tolisten to understand this one. Rick scrolls down the list of 60 brands featuredat the show, and they proceed to talk about Chanel, Chronoswiss, Bell &Ross, Nomos, U-Boat, Norqain, and more. You'll have to click through to findout whether the news is good or bad.

09 Mar 2023ChatGPT Dropships A Microbrand Watch, Failing To Predict The MoonSwatch Moonshine Gold, And What To Expect At Watches And Wonders01:00:38

On this week’s episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is trapped in an airplane over the ocean, so Rick and David are joined once again by Alex from Fifth Wrist Radio. The gents get cracking with a discussion of Jake's recent article on microbrands, finally putting to bed the debate over how to define the word! An hour or so before it was released, the team makes predictions about what the MoonSwatch Moonshine Gold will be, and then follow that up with their reactions to what it actually is. Spoiler alert: they're disappointed! Then, Rick is joined for an interview by Matthieu Humair, the man at the helm of Watches and Wonders, to discuss the upcoming show and what to expect this year. Plus, a few friends of the show chime in with their thoughts on the new MoonSwatch!

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by David and Ariel, while Ripley gets stuck in software update limbo before joining in. Ariel goes deep on the tug-of-war between ADs and brands as the latter seeks to expand into the US market with brand boutiques and direct sales. 06 Feb 2025157. Why They Don't Play Our New Game In Nepal01:13:51

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick, Ariel, David, and Ripley are, for the second week in a row, all in their respective home cities and Rick teases the show's preamble by announcing a very special new limited-edition series of watch cases made by the team's AV garbage. That's all we'll say, for now. (The show is banned in Nepal, but why?) All the guys have new podcast-designed mics and are feeling quite professional, at the moment. Getting down to business, Rick asks Ariel and David, "How limited is the new limited-edition Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Hi-Beat watch?" (Ripley already knows because he wrote the article.) Next on the docket is the Panerai Radiomir 8 Giorni Eilean Experience Edition watch, which Rick rightly points out looks identical to the Studio Underd0g X Fears "The Gimlet" watch released on the same day. Ripley shares the backstory about the yacht after which the Panerai is named — and a purchase comes with a trip to Sicily! It'll only set you back 43k. Ripley shares his take on who did this design first, historically, and he adds that the Studio Underd0g costs £1000 GBP (but doesn't include a trip to Italy. Rick addresses the elephant in the room: Why would anyone buy the Panerai over the Studio Underd0g? You'll have to tune in to learn the answer. This slides into a new game Rick devised called "Judge the Collab" — you'll be shocked, I say, shocked by the guys' ratings. The game catches on, and other colllab judgment follows. Tune in to get all the juicy horological details.

Then Rick shares some updates about Rolex CPO and eBay's expansion to new watches. And did you know Casio finally delivered a real fitness watch? They did and everyone's got an opinion. 06 Dec 2024148. Rick Is Missing So Panerai Gets A Kicking And A Trophy Looking For An Award.01:04:41

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the opening question is: Where's Rick? Ariel, David, and Ripley ponder Rick's potential whereabouts, with guesses from something related to farming to simply taking a good old-fashioned vacation. The working proletariat goes on without him. Ariel takes the wheel and shares his astonishment at just how many new watch brands are out there; Ripley concurs. If these guys haven't heard of a brand, who on earth could possibly keep up? Jerome Lambert is the next topic of conversation, and the guys ponder his re-assumption of the CEO-ship of Jaeger LeCoultre — is this a demotion? A promotion, of sorts? Ariel thinks going back to the product zone is a promotion; David likens it to sending one's best general onto the battlefield. Ripley discusses the Hamilton Dune and Hamilton's long history of supplying watches for the film industry. (Don't call it a watch — it's a wrist-worn device.) Then, the team deconstructs the new Panerai Submersible, and there's a lot to unpack. They move on to a discussion of where watches fit into the larger luxury landscape. And they can't resist pondering the question of the difference between grade 2 and grade 5 titanium. They end with a question, just as they began: Does Ripley's Honda Fit deserve its own watch? Listen in and find out.

06 Nov 2022The Breitling Super Chronomat Origins And The Brand’s Commitment To A More Sustainable Future00:35:03

This special episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly is brought to you by Breitling and its Sustainability Mission Report. Earlier this year during Geneva Watch Days 2022, Rick and David got a chance to sit down with Aurelia Figueroa, the Global Head of Sustainability at Breitling to talk about the new Super Chronomat Origins series and Breitling’s industry-leading commitment to a more sustainable future.

While there is quite a lot of talk within the industry about recycled stainless steel, Breitling found that the actual impact of sourcing its steel alloys was relatively insignificant (less than 1%), while the impact of sourcing gold and diamonds was exponentially higher, despite the fact that these materials make up significantly less volume compared to the amount of stainless steel that the brand uses each year. The new Breitling Chronomat Origins is constructed from 100% fully traceable-to-the-origin gold that comes from ethical mines, along with completely sustainable lab-grown diamonds. Additionally, rather than being secretive to try to maintain a manufacturing advantage, Breitling embraces a model of complete supply chain transparency with the Chronomat Origins series and openly discloses its various suppliers as a way to cultivate more sustainable production within both the watch industry and beyond.

During the conversation, Aurelia offers some insight on some of the things that Breitling has recently been doing to promote a more sustainable future, such as the transition to 100% renewable energy and biogas, plus a commitment to producing zero plastic waste. Additionally, she also sheds some light on the brand’s plans to be using 100% ethically sourced, traceable to the origin gold by 2025 and 100% sustainable and fully traceable lab-grown diamonds by 2024. Actions always speak louder than words, and Breitling is actively taking steps towards a completely sustainable production process, with the latest tangible results being the new Super Chronomat Automatic 38 Origins watch that is made entirely from gold and diamonds that are all ethically sourced and fully traceable to their respective sustainable origins.

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, Ariel, Rick, and David turn their trio into a quartet in welcoming artist, attorney, and watch lover Will Charlesworth to the show! There's lots to talk about, so things get started right away with a discussion of collaboration watches, with two prime examples having just been released. Then it's straight into new releases and a few reviews, including hotness from Omega and A. Lange & Söhne. Per tradition, the show wraps up with a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

The guys then discuss Omega's cryptic announcement on Instagram, suggesting that whatever it is, it will likely be disappointing and too expensive. 17 Jan 2025154. Lunches And Wonders01:26:36

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is

baaaaaaaack to the land of the living — but where is David? Ariel and Ripley are here, and despite the fact that the word "snot" has been mentioned more times than the law should allow in the first five minutes, Rick is also kind enough to ask Ariel and Ripley how they're doing re the fires in Los Angeles. It's a lot. But we're all comforted by talk of watches, so they guys get right to it, and Ariel discusses a dystopian future when watch media is too thin to cover the watch industrial complex run by the corporate world. Where are the visionaries, the mavericks? Ripley dovetails with this idea and underscores the virtues of not being in any brand's back pocket, i.e., the argument for independent watch media and multiple voices. The trio then takes a look at the new Omega Speedmaster Meteorite Moonphase watches. There is some playful banter and some legit debate. Ripley is triple-wristing, and he shows of his Casio watch ring, a sight not to be missed. Next up, they team discusses the latest from Vacheron Constantin, priced at a mere 32k. But the question is: Hit, Miss or Maybe? (Ariel has A LOT to say here.) And what about the new Tissot Chemin des Tourelles Skeleton? Gateway drug or easy-access formula — or both? Lastly, how can one diss The Muppets? Find out in this discussion of the new Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy watch.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the tetrad stands firm, with Ariel, Rick, and David once again joined by the esteemed Ripley Sellers. There's no dilly dallying this week, as the group dives into Ariel's recent though piece on the possibility of legacy watchmakers dying and coming back as tech subsidiaries. Following a handful of tangents, things get back on track with a few new releases and recent reviews. Things wrap up, as always, with a game of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel and Ripley, along with Kevin Roberts (@kevin_roberts100) Azad Zangana (@aztime), and Will Charlesworth (@inquisitivepheasants). The show begins with banter about bequeathing watches, and Kevin decides, impromptu, who's getting what when he kicks the bucket. When the guys get down to business, the first topic up is Chanel's purchase of 25% of MB&F. The team shares their thoughts on three new watch releases:, starting with lots of love for the Urwerk EMC SR-71, followed by the "weird" but "cool" Hublot MP-13 Tourbillon Bi-Axis Retrograde watch, which Ariel describes as "niche 1.5." Lastly, they hem and haw about the new Roger Dubuis Orbis In Machina, obviously a pun of a name. As always, the show concludes with a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe. This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly David is in Paris with Breguet, leaving Rick and Ariel alone for a dinner date instead of the dinner party for which they so badly long. Ariel starts off with the full rundown of this year's Couture show in Las Vegas, from which he's just returned. The discussion focuses mostly on Citizen, Oris, and Bell & Ross, three brands that showed up in force at the show. Ariel especially dives into an analysis of Citizen and its product strategy. They also wade into the muck that is homage watches, including the obligation luxury brands have in the face of such watches. Plus, a few new watches. 19 Dec 2024150. The Post-it Note Rolex, Milking The Blood Moon, And Wearing An A.I Watch01:29:05

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Brother Rick is conspicuously absent, so it's Ariel running the show alongside Ripley and David, who all know that to take a podcast vacation now would be to deprive listeners of the comfort of a discussion of their watch hobby straight to their ears. The guys get right to it with a look the new Venezianico Arsenale. Ariel proposes that when glasses take over smartwatches, the wrist will become available again for useless things like mechanical timekeeping. They veer off associatively into the rabbit hole of augmented reality. Getting back to basics, Ripley posits that when simplicity is done right, it can be more impressive than a busy dial because your attention is focused only on a few elements. Next up is the Rolex Sky-Dweller 226938 18k yellow-gold watch, which Ariel likes quite a lot, even though the dial has never sold him on "pretty." Ripley says he'd take it over a Nautilus or a Royal Oak. David agrees that it's a powerful watch in its complications and execution, but it's not right for his wrist (too heavy). Then the team discusses David's most recent "Grinding Gears" article, in which he asks "How long should watch brands milk historic achievements?" Next up is a look at the new Bulova Lunar Pilot "Blood Moon" watch, which David thinks is too large even in its smallest form, but everyone loves the story of this watch. Listen in for more. Speaking of small, the Hamilton PSR74, a modern LED with a retro look. David isn't sure he would spend upwards of $800 on this watch, though he's happy it exists. Then, they discuss the watch that the Venezianico Arsenale wants to be: the Parmigiani Tonda PF Sport Chronograph in Milano Blue. They end with a look at a deep dive into Bulgari's new watch manufacture and the Hands-On: Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono 'Cycling Edition' And The Role Of Watches In Professional Cycling | aBlogtoWatch Maybe when Rick gets back, he'll bring Hit, Miss, Maybe with him.

15 Sep 2022Is It Ok For Watch Geeks To Like Smart Watches? Apple Watch Ultra, Smartwatches From Tag Heuer, Louis Vuitton, And Sequent. The Credor Eichi II, Why G-Shock Won’t Make A Smartwatch And Poetry00:59:28

The Apple Watch Ultra, New Smartwatches From Tag Heuer, Louis Vuitton, And Sequent, Plus A Look At The Credor Eichi II And Why G-Shock Won’t Make A Smartwatch

In this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Andrew from Watchfinder & Co. for a deep dive into the world of smartwatches. Given the recent release of a new generation of Apple Watches and the massive amount of attention that the Apple Watch Ultra has received from traditional collectors and enthusiasts, our hosts kick off the show by answering the question of whether or not the Apple Watch should even be considered a watch in the first place. From there, the conversation gets into why the new adventure-ready Apple Watch Ultra appeals to many individuals who historically had no interest in traditional smartwatches, along with whether or not its design was influenced by the traditional Swiss timepiece industry. Given its more durable construction and ability to even function as a proper dive computer, our hosts bring up the point as to why many people tend to inherently trust Apple over many traditional watch manufacturers when it comes to things like depth ratings, along with how Apple is able to excel at creating intuitive and easily digestible interfaces.

Although the new generation of Apple Watches is arguably the biggest news from the world of connected devices, it is hardly the only option available within the space, and our quartet of hosts then get into a conversation about some of the other premium smartwatches that are currently available, such as those produced by Tag Heuer and Louis Vuitton. After discussing why these models fill different roles within the greater connected watch landscape, Ariel then offers some insight on why Casio has decided not to pursue smartwatches, despite its G-Shock range being regarded as the go-to digital timepiece for rugged use. After pondering the question of whether or not any wearable connected device will be able to dethrone the Apple Watch at some point in the near future, our hosts move to the complete opposite end of the timepiece spectrum to talk about the ultra-premium Credor Eichi II and its different approach to luxury, before moving back to the topic of connected devices with the unconventional and irreverent Sequent Smart(ass) Watch that was created in collaboration with seconde/seconde/. To wrap up the show, our hosts look at some of the various shortcomings of smartwatches and get into the details of why connected devices such as the Apple Watch aren’t currently entirely solar powered, along with when we might be able to see brands produce models that are able to charge themselves autonomously.

18 Apr 2025167. The Regurgitation Rating Scale™ Debuts, The Hollowness Of Gold, And Introducing Mr Zenith01:10:45

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Ariel gets right to his most burning question: Why is everyone still so worried about tariffs? Because he isn't. In contrarian fashion, Ariel is worried about other things, like the watch industry eating its own tail. What does he mean by this? Tune in to find out. On the various home fronts, there are earthquakes in Los Angeles and wildfires in Scotland.Metaphor much? Along those lines, "regurgitation" is the word of the day, and it's not as icky as it sounds because Ariel argues that it can be an art form, especially in the context of Watches & Wonders 2025. David has a different view, and the guys bat around their ideas about Chopard, TAGHeuer, Hublot, and other heavy hitters to lend their expertise to the ongoing conversation. Ripley underscored the new tech and old design, a nicer way of approaching the regurgitation theme. This word itself is controversial. See what side you land on by listening in: strategy, art form, both, or neither?

Ariel kicks things off by sharing about the recent Longines x ABTW event on the massive ocean liner the Queen Mary. David's newfound distaste for thick watches turns into a much larger discussion of why brands aren't trying harder to make more wearable watches. This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel and David, while Ripley is conspicuously absent, and the three muse about his whereabouts. He's visiting a brand we've never worked with, in a country he's never visited. Maybe the mystery will be solved next week. Meanwhile, the remaining trio gets right to it with a discussion of the news that Rolex is out and LVMH is in with Formula 1. The thesis? It's all about the money. Rick can't keep himself from lol'ing that Donald Trump has upped his grifter game by introducing a line of watches.... for suckers. aBlogtoWatch won't cover this editorially, as it does nothing to advance our conversations about horology, or horology itself. Yeah, you know how this goes. In media news, Watches of Switzerland has acquired Hodinkee, and David artfully expresses that we've known the unknown for a long time — and now the known unknown is known. Listen in, you'll get it. With Richard on the lam (or perhaps, as the team muses, at a Scottish day spa with the family and farm animals), Ariel hosts this week's aBlogtoWatch Weekly show, flanked, as always by David and Ripley. They get right down to it with a discussion of a trend in watch world: coffee table books. They flip through the pages of several new releases and ponder their respective audiences. Switching gears, the guys discuss the new Breitling Chronomat NFL Collection watches and express some awe around the partnership itself. Next up is a deep dive into yet another collab: the Marathon 41mm Jeep Willys SSGPM Officer's Mechanical watch. (David wishes the new Jeeps were as sturdy as this watch!) They move on to Mike's review of an elegant worldtimer by Andersen Genève, and then Omega's new Seamaster Regatta America's Cup, which Ariel deems "not pretty but cool." On the other side of the spectrum, the team discusses Hamilton's Khaki Field Murph 38mm watch with a white dial, followed by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Artistical Calibre 184. Even in Rick's absence, Ariel decides to play Guess the Price of the Seiko, with the watch in question being the Presage Craftmanship Series Urushi Lacquer SPB227, a classic design with a twist. (Ripley had to recuse himself because he wrote the article and knows the price.) The show ends with a reflection on Ariel's column about what to expect when you buy a luxury watch.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, David, and Rick are joined by Breitling's Sylvain Berneron to discuss the brand's recent surprise acquisition of legacy brand Universal Genève. Sylvain asked to come on the show but kept the guys fully in the dark before the episode, so things start with Ariel, Rick, and David guessing what the big news is. When they finally get there, Sylvain dives into the who, what, and whys of the acquisition, including what Breitling has planned for the historic UG brand. After squeezing as much information as possible out of Sylvain, Rick moves the show forward to discuss some new releases and reviews. 07 Jul 2022aBlogtoWatch Weekly: Rolex Bubble Finally Bursting? And Reviews From Breitling, Oris, Timex, Girard-Perregaux, Hermes And Guest Host Rob From WatchPro00:58:49

aBlogtoWatch Weekly: New Releases, Rob Corder From Watchpro, And Are Rolex Watches Becoming Available Again?

On this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and David sit down with Rob Corder, Co-Founder and Managing Editor at Watchpro. As a publication that could best be described as the Wall Street Journal or Financial Times of the watch industry, Watchpro is known for its unique business-oriented perspective on the world of watches. Rob offers his insights on everything from whether or not we are actually seeing an increase in the global supply of Rolex watches, to the greater state of the watch industry as a whole, and which brands are most likely to be impacted by changes in the supply of ‘unicorn models’ that have historically been unavailable at a retail level.

In addition to talking about their predictions regarding the future supply of Rolex watches and how liquidity differs between luxury timepieces and the stock market, the trio also go over some of the latest new watch releases that span everything from five-figure statement pieces like the pink gold Girard-Perregaux Laureato and the Hermès Arceau Le Temps Voyageur to budget-friendly collaboration watches such as the James Brand x Timex Expedition North White and the Oris Aquis New York Harbor Limited Edition. Additionally, with the release of the new colorful time-only Breitling Superocean models that were unveiled earlier this week, Rick admits that he prefers watches with date displays, while David suggests that Rick’s preference may be simply due to the fact that he doesn’t spend enough time lounging at beach-side bars.

Each week, the editors of the timepiece enthusiast publication aBlogtoWatch.com discuss some of the latest trending topics and hottest new watch stories in the aBlogtoWatch Weekly news podcast program. Listeners can learn more by clicking on any of the links below to view the articles discussed by the aBlogtoWatch crew during the program

18 Aug 2022Rolex Factory In Meltdown? Ferrari And Gucci Step In To Help? Does ClickBait Work? The Cheapest Diamond Watch Ever And Does Cartier Have A Plot To Take Everyone’s Money, With Andrew From WatchFinder00:58:29

In this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is away attending to other business, so Rick and David are joined by guest host Andrew — a.k.a. “The Man With The Hands” from Watchfinder & Co. to talk about the latest news and reviews from this week in the world of watches. To start the show, a quick message from Jake, the aBlogtoWatch Social Media & Community Manager, sets off a discussion about how the ever-changing algorithms are forcing everyone to use “Rolex” in YouTube titles as clickbait, which spirals into a conversation about the psychology behind clickbait itself and how the way we consume video content has changed over the years. To properly measure the effects of clickbait, the trio decides to conduct an experiment using two different titles for this podcast episode, and given how discussing clickbait-worthy topics seems to come naturally to Andrew, you can have fun guessing about which version you're actually seeing.

From there, the conversation gets into Rolex and how the brand became the world’s most famous watchmaker, along with why Andrew thinks Porsche is the car company most like Rolex (see, we told you he naturally talks about clickbait-worthy topics). After discussing the homogenization of people’s preferences in regards to watch collecting, the trio gets into a discussion about affordable GMT watches, the cheapest diamond-set watch available, and the least expensive timepieces in everyone’s collections that receive wear on a regular basis. Finishing up the discussion of new releases and reviews is a conversation about whether or not the removable grill on the latest Cartier Pasha is just a plot to make more money on replacements when customers inevitably lose theirs, followed by a brief discussion about the new Seiko Speedtimer and the brand’s obsession with difficult naming conventions. Lastly, rounding out the show is a brief look forward and what we can expect from both Andrew and Watchfinder & Co. in the near future.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by the usual suspects, Ripley, David, and Ariel. Next up, it's Guess the Price of the Seiko (spoiler alert: David won), and then the team scrutinizes a recent Tag Heuer drop from all angles. There's a brief digression about Ariel's push-pull relationship to the idea of maybe, possibly seeing a bear on a camping trip — is it a bear or a deer? No spoilers here. Finally, the guys are joined by Kevin Roberts (@kevin_roberts100) and Azad Zangana (@aztime) for another round of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

06 Jan 2025152. The Best, The Worst, And The Bang Average Of 202401:31:54

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is virtually flanked not only by Ripley, David, and Ariel, but he's also got three guests on board for this week: Kevin Roberts, Alon Ben Joseph, and Simon Ryan. They begin by doing a round-robin of "Where are you, and what are you wearing?" meaning "What watch are you wearing." This greases the wheels for Rick's Rules of Order, in which Rick discusses how the show will unfold vis-a-vis the four categories he's asked each guest to speak to on this NYE show: the best watch release of 2024; the best brand of 2024; the worst watch release of 2024; and the most "bang-average" watch of 2024 (which causes understandable confusion for the non-UK participants). Tune in to hear what each watch lover has to say at the tail end of this interesting year of watches.

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Rick reveals that he's now deputy director of theFBI (now that podcast hosts can hold such roles), and Ripley confirms that Rickis a solid enough conspiracy theorist that.... well, it works. Rick thenannounces that this will be an "F1 episode," and it's hard to knowwhat that might mean. One clue is the red robin on which F1 team each teammember likes best. When talk turns to watches, first up is the IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar in Green, and Rickshakes things up by starting with "Judge the Collab." The news isn'tgreat. Back to the F1 theme, we pivot to the eyebrow game of the Aramco team.David then departs for the airport after speed-packing just off-screen.Fiiiiiinally, it's back to watches with a look at the hands-on review of the Tudor Black Bay Chrono "Flamingo Blue" Watch. And there's some hemming and hawing about the new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Bronze Gold and Burgundy Watch.Ripley calls it by recollecting that "the road to hell is paved with goodintentions." Rick closes the show by introducing his new theme song forthe F1 Champions League. Tune in!

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, the regular trio is at it again with the latest news and releases! The guys dive right into Tudor's latest release, the black Pelagos FXD, and the hype surrounding its announcement. Perhaps inevitably, that segues into a broader discussion of Tudor's catalog and product strategy. Then it's on to Apple's new watches, just announced at its latest event; a few questions about the Louis Vuitton Watch Prize, for which 20 semi-finalists were just announced; and this year's GPHG nominees. Then it's on to headier fare, as the team talks about the value of learning about watches you can't afford and will never own. Things wrap up with some new releases and recent reviews.

08 Nov 2024144: New Old Smugness; UTC, GMT, And Zulu Time; It’s All French To Me01:30:34

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel, David, and Ripley (is Ripley sipping Scotch?) on U.S. Election Day. The subject of watches is more of a balm than surveying the political landscape, alas. Ripley is happy that he can now wear his Mondaine Stop-to-Go watch since most U.S. states have "fallen back" to standard time. Surprisingly, no one extended the metaphor to politics, but perhaps the polls hadn't closed yet. Getting down to business, the team starts right off with a review of ABTW's most-read article of the month, David's analysis of why we love to see giants fall. And by "giants," in this case, he means Patek Philippe and its rather smug leader, Thierry Stern. Listen in to learn what the fuss is all about. Then, there's a discussion of the slippery slope of "new old-stock," which Mike takes a solid position on in his recent column. They round the bend toward the finish line with Hit, Miss, Maybe: "the best wristwatch game there is" (Rick).

29 Nov 2024147. New Balls Please From AP And Hublot, Monochrome Omega, And Some Can't Unsee01:25:41

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly,Rick and David are both back, so the happy regulars are all reunited. "Who touched whose Cubitus?" is the first question right off the bat, and hilarity ensues. Next up is a look at a WatchPro article regarding Rolex's exit from the Formula 1 stage. They pause for a moment to ponder a lovely and well-photographed visit to Louis Vuitton's Les Fabriques des Arts Workshop, discussing the positioning of the brand in the larger watch world. Then, they guys turn their attention to Mike Razak's recent column about how "small affordable brands are chipping away at the fortress of high-end brands."  Next up is a discussion of new releases, including the Doxa SUB 200T Diamonds series.

Everyone seems to be talking about the Jaguar rebrand, and ABTW is no exception.

It is the focus of the first round of Hit, Miss, Maybe this week — don't miss it! They also go 'round about the new Audemars Piguet X KAWS Royal Oak Tourbillon Concept Tourbillon Companion Watch and the No-Date Steel Omega Seamaster.

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, it's Ariel who's missing, but David has found his way back to the podcasting booth and rejoins Rick for another raucous chat about the latest in watches. The two are joined by Andrew Morgan from WatchFinder & Co., who immediately disappoints Rick when he shares that he is not a soccer/football fan. The trio dissects the murkiness of calling watches "iconic," has a go at a new brand peddling overpriced watches, and humbly predicts what 2023 may hold. Plus, a slew of rainbow watches, a wildly expensive Credor, and David divulges trade secrets!
